If Mike Woodson thought he had headache before, he just inherited top job from Mike D'Antoni (right). (AP photo)
Mike Woodson believes he never was treated fairly by the Hawks or fully appreciated by the fans or the media in Atlanta (me in particular, unless I just misread the glares and/or strings of expletives any time I said hello).
Well, if Woodson wanted another chance to prove himself as an NBA head coach, he just got it. He has been handed the keys to CarmeloGate, Linsanity and everything else that goes with being the head coach of the New York Knicks (at least on an interim basis). Yahoo! Sports was the first of multiple outlets to report Wednesday that Mike D’Antoni has “resigned” as the Knicks’ head coach and will be replaced by Woodson, who was an assistant on his staff.
It may be only a short-term position for Woodson. (What isn’t short-term in New York?) But at the very least, he presumably will coach the team for the remainder of the regular season and in the playoffs, should the Knicks make it. They have lost six straight to fall to 18-24 and entered Wednesday tied with Milwaukee for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
There had been several reports of a feud between D’Antoni and Carmelo Anthony, whose recent return to the lineup coincided with the team’s skid. Anthony denied a New York Post report that he wants to be traded before Thursday’s deadline, writing on his Twitter feed, “Alright, enough with all this trade talk. It’s making me sick to my stomach to hear that I wanna leave NY.”
Next stop for him: The “Iso-Melo” offense?
About Woodson: This will be severe test of his ability to pull a clearly dysfunctional bunch together. The Knicks aren’t short of talent — Anthony, Amare Stoudemire, Jeremy Lin, Landry Fields, Tyson Chandler, J.R. Smith, Iman Shumpert — even if there’s no indication that all of the pieces can function together.
With the Hawks, Woodson’s won-loss record improved every season over six years, from 13-69 in 2004-05 to 53-29 in 2009-10. But he was fired after the last season because of the team’s inability to win a single second-round playoff game. (His replacement, Larry Drew, coached the Hawks to a first-round mild upset of Orlando last season and took the Chicago Bulls to six games in the second round.)
Woodson is not foreign to personality conflicts in the locker room. He and Josh Smith banged heads often. The Hawks’ locker room wasn’t always a close-knit bunch. But that pales in comparison to the Knicks’ situation.
Woodson also now will be operating in the spotlight of the New York media. I mean, if he thought I was hard to deal with, good luck in Gotham. But he wanted another chance, and now he has gotten it.

In my view, Woody is only their coach for the rest of this season. During the off-season the Knicks will feel compelled to get a ‘name’ guy to take over simply because they are in the #1 media market and they will think their fan base has to have a guy with ‘gravitas’. I mean after all this is a franchise that Pat Riley once coached.
Second, good luck to you Woody because you will have maybe a one week honeymoon period before the players, the NY media, and the assorted sideshow elements will turn on you.

First of all, you New York fans are delusional as usual. Why can no one else remember a New York Knicks dynasty? Oh wait…because it never happened. Yeah you had Willis Reed….but about 20 other teams had their one good year too. Ewing et al never got over the hump, so don’t tell me about that era….Reggie Miller anyone?
Okay, now for what the Knicks need to do….trade Carmelo at all costs to anyone stupid enough to take him. He is a selfish cancer who is completely self-absorbed. I fail to see why he is any better than Antoine Walker or Jamal Mashburn or a number of other guys who always got hyped as being better than they ever really were. Who’s laughing now? The Nuggets.

Dantoni is a system guy.
Mike Woodson is a NBA Coach.
Carmelo and Amare should get iso’s all day.
Jeremy Lin should never have more shots than Amare, which was happening because of system.
You people are fools if you believe Mike Woodson is not a reputable coach. He may end up becoming the long term solution once New York buys in. And they will buy in!

Once the media pushes him for an answer beyond “defend and rebound the basketball” he’s gonna lose it. Just keep those arms folded, Woody!!
Some of these revisionist posts are hysterical. “Lost control after 7-8yrs.” Really? I know it FELT like at least a couple decades. “He made improvements every year.” Well, he did shave his Cleveland from Family Guy hair that one year. That was an improvement, I guess. “He’s a victim of racism!” Haha! Billy Knight (who’s black, by all accounts) personally tried to fire him 3x, but ownership fired BK instead. He was here for 6 excruciating years. How long should they have held on to him? 15 years? What’s the not-racist cutoff? He was a cheap hire (just like LD), which is priority #1 to BASG. There’s a reason no one else wanted him as HC.
And why did he never fess up on the eyebrows? Something strange about that…

Couldn’t think of a worse coach for the Knicks, unless it was Hewitt. They won big last night but lets see how they do in the future. Woodson never could figure out what to do with the guard play here. He let Bibby go, left Teague on the bench too much and couldn’t get his royalty to set picks, they were all out on the perimeters with the guards trying to get the ball feed to them, to take three pointers. If I were the Knicks I think I would make Lin a player coach, but I think he is afraid of Carmelo Anthony, too. The NBA is not about winning it is a rock concert for corporate expense accounts. They should have fired Anthony who obviously can’t win for them and kept Mike D’Anton. Some smart college should pick this guy up, he is a very good coach, which are not appreciated in the NBA.

Most OVER - RATED Coach in the History of the NBA - Phil Jackson
March 15th, 2012
9:58 am
Phil Jackson – Never Won One NBA Title Unless He Had Atleast TWO (2) NBA All-Stars on his roster.
Virtually any NBA coach could win, if he had Michael Jordan – Kobe Bryant – Scottie Pippen AND Shaquille Oneal. Four NBA Hall of Fame Players – Even I could win with that team.
Here is undisputed proof:
Remember when MJ retired, Phil Jackson’s teams didn’t even get to the NBA Finals. They lost twice in the Eastern Conference Finals. Jordan returns to the NBA and then “majically”, the Championship Rings return.
I am not a Hater – Jackson is indeed a great coach.
However, he is not any better than several other great coaches. He is just extremely fortunate to get to sit and watch Jordan and Kobe and Shaq perform amazing feat severy year – and him get the credit for it. (If Phil had won or even reached the finals once without Jordan, THEN he and his boosters would have something to boast about.)

Whether Jeremy Lin is the real deal or just the latest fast food for Sports Illustrated and ESPN to feed we sports fans, Carmello Anthony will be the death of the Knicks.
He sucks the energy out of any offense of which he’s a part and he’s a defensive liability. He’s not particularly athletic and he doesn’t make his teammates better.
No coincidence the Knicks record was better when he was out. And as a previous post stated, the Nuggets are much better without him.

As much as I loathe watching the NBA, I actually watched approx 15 min of the Knicks on TV the other night. I saw Melo on more than one occasion demonstrably pout and quit on plays when he didn’t get the ball when he thought he should. When this happened, the next time he would get the ball in his hands a shot was going up no matter what. Melo, while very talented, strikes me as a me first, prima donna that I wouldn’t want to play with or attempt to coach. Good luck Woodie, attitude wise Melo is J Smith on steroids. Of course that’s just my opinion, I could be wrong.

I actually could see them finishing the season strong and the Knicks removing the Interim tag. I hope they do and I hope he does well. I don’t see any reason to root against Mike Woodson.

Tradition,
This is only his second season not being the Hawks coach. I would bet that he was not looking for a job last season because he could easily be an assistant anywhere. Notice D’Antoni hired him as his top assistant. I am not a Woody lover but he is not a terrible coach.

NY 30 under Woody.
“Coach Woodson, he’s more of – he’s a player’s coach,” Stoudemire said. “It’s a matter of us as players playing hard for him and trying to get these wins.”
Seems you can teach an old dog new tricks.
