The guy on the right (Jim Irsay) better hope the guy on left (Peyton Manning) can't still play.
Peyton Manning will go down as one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history. It follows that the Indianapolis Colts’ decision to release him sets up one of sports’ all-time greatest games of risk.
– Colts owner Jim Irsay did not want to pay Manning a $28 million bonus that was about to come due because he does not believe the player can fully come back from his third neck procedure in 19 months. Coincidentally, Indianapolis is in position to take potential franchise quarterback, Andrew Luck, with the No. 1 pick in the draft. The risk? If Manning has a successful comeback, he immediately makes his new team a Super Bowl contender and Irsay will look bad for releasing an icon and a hero.
– Several teams will “kick the tires” on Manning but only a few figure to be legitimate contenders. Whichever team ultimately signs him will be taking a risk. Manning will command a significant contract, loaded with guarantees. But there’s a good possibility that Manning won’t be able to perform at the level that he has in his career. (Remember, neck injury aside, he’s also 36 years old.) Given the amount of salary cap space he will take up, it’s basically an all-or-nothing gamble.
Personally, it wouldn’t shock me if Manning has played his final game. Nerve regeneration is a tricky thing. Manning is confident but even he admits he’s not there yet. Quoting from the news conference: “I’ve got some progress to make but I’ve come a long way.”
If Manning can play, here are five likely destinations – three of which are on the Falcons’ 2012 schedule.
1.) Miami: Manning spends a lot of time in south Florida (he owns a condo in South Beach). He also could convince himself that the Dolphins, who have a strong defense and a solid running game, can contend for a title with him there. The slight risk is playing for a first-year head coach (Joe Philbin). Dolphins’ current QBs: Matt Moore, J.P. Losman.
2.) Arizona (Falcons’ 2012 home opponent): The Cardinals found magic in a bottle and reached a Super Bowl with one old-timer, Kurt Warner, so why not again? They also have one of the game’s best receivers in Larry Fitzgerald and play in a building with a retractable roof. Cardinals’ current QBs: Kevin Kolb, John Skleton, Richard Bartel.
3.) Washington (Falcons’ 2012 road opponent): Is there anything or anyone that owner Dan Snyder hasn’t tried once? Snyder would give the loudest sales pitch and offer the most money if he really wants Manning. I’m not sure Manning, who calls and changes plays at the line, would mesh with coach Mike Shanahan, a bit of a control freak. Shanahan also likes his quarterbacks to be more mobile. However, if the two can co-exist, it would be interesting to see Manning compete in the NFC East, particularly against his two-time Super Bowl-winning brother in New York. Redskins’ current QBs: Rex Grossman, John Beck.
4.) N.Y. Jets: Fair or unfair, many are not sold on Mark Sanchez. At the very least, I’m sure there’s little concern about hurting Sanchez’s feelings if the team brings Manning in for a year or two. Defense isn’t the issue in New York, but the Jets may not have the offensive pieces around Manning to make this a good fit. Also, Rex Ryan is kind of a buffoon. Manning could get beat up in New York. Jets’ current quarterbacks: Mark Sanchez, Mark Brunnell, Kevin O’Connell.
5.) Kansas City (Falcons’ 2012 road opponent): Some feel an NFC West team, Seattle, will bid for Manning’s services, but he would be better served looking at an AFC West team, the Chiefs. The division is wide open with Denver, Oakland and San Diego. A lot of the Chiefs’ problems have centered on the quarterback position, which Manning would solve. Romeo Crennel did a nice job with the Chiefs’ defense. But can he do a sufficient job as the head coach, after taking over for the fired Todd Haley? Chiefs’ current QBs: Matt Casell, Kyle Orton, Ricky Stanzi.
So, do you expect to see Peyton Manning to play again — and if so, where?

Vol55 beat me to it but why not the Titans…for all the reasons he mentioned. Then after a year or two he very well may end up coaching the Volunteers…sorry Derek but unless you win an SEC Championship or something, and maybe that wouldn’t be enough, you wouldn’t stand a chance, after all Gods don’t come along all that often.

“Aging quarterbacks have not fared well in new cities historically, with Joe Montana in KC being the most notable example.”
People never do their homework when they make that statement. Montana was 17-8 in last two years in KC. He led them to 2 straight years of playoff appearances. He won as many playoff games as Favre did in last three playoff appearances. With the exceptions of the AFC championship in 93 where Buffalo throttled the Chiefs, Montana played some of the best playoff football of his later career, especially considering that he was saddled with the life sapping coaching of Marty Schottenheimer! That divisional round shootout between Moon and Montana in 93 at Houston was one of the great head-to-head battles in last 20 years. Watch online if you get a chance…

The Titans receivers are only slightly better the Jaguars. There is some upside in a couple of them; but that Team rises and fall on Chris Johnson’s talents.
The team where he’d be a good fit is Arizona; they’d take a big hit on the Kolb contract. Some of you are missing the bigger cap pictures. It is too bad Denver has put them self in a corner, they have the money and a veteran coach who knows when get out of the way. Seattle has no cap room, but with Lynch signed in that division, I’d been throwing my available cap space at him and showing Whitehurst and Jackson door as quick as possible! But the team that really needs to his first and fast is inept Redskins. But here is the question to ask in Washington, do you really want to expose yourself to overcoaching gene that has evolved in Mike Shanahan’s brain?

It was a risk either way for the Colts. Not a Colts fan (and certainly not an Irsay fan) but I can see how it was a difficult situation. I admire Manning and as far as the announcement went it was really handled with class on both Irsay’s and Manning’s part.
And to Joe Tess Fish House comment about the Falcon’s replacing Ryan. Shut up.

My guess is Miami.
What a way to go out in Indy. Class all the way. The new phrase for an icon to leave his long time team, “He put the Peyton on that exit”. I am sure glad he didn’t “Favre it up”.
I do wish he would just call it a day. I hear what the doctors are saying but the spinal cord it not something you want to take a chance with. He is HOF, has the ring and the kids to play with. Nobody would second guess him on calling it a career.

falcon freak: I got a chuckle out of your comment about Peyton coaching the VOLS. It may happen some day, and your prognosis is a good one.
Peyton is an amazing player. I watched him twice in the Swamp. Even though he never beat the GATORS, it was not his fault. The VOL offense with him at QB and Cuttclif (sp) as the offensive coordinator was dangerous. The VOL defense during those years was not that good. I am sure that many DAWG Fans saw the same thing.
I wish him the best because he is a class act.

Denver, Denver, Denver,
But I think he might retire. I had that surgery .
I don’t see how you play NFL football after it.
Joe Tess, you’re funny as hell. I get it. Pro-level stuff.

Peyton needs a good offensive line to prevent injury. If he signs with Washington he will not make it through the first 4 games. This is the best time for Peyton to retire. This reminds me of Bret Favre the first season he was great but after that the crash.

He needs to mount his colt and ride off into the sunset. I’d hate to see him end up with a bone sticking out of his neck, ala Joe Thiesman.

I was at a bar last weekend and there was a fat dirty guy begging for change out front. I thought it was strange a homeless guy would be so fat but the guy was so dirty and smelled really badly. The guy walking ahead of me had a Falcons sweater on and the homeless guy started yelling “Ryan sucks Ryan sucks I know because I’m Joe Tess Fish House”
I thought I was hearing things so I threw a handful of change on the ground and as the bum scrambled to pick it up I asked him what he said about a fish house. He grinned at me as he crawled through the trash someone had pelted him with and said “I’m famous I’m Joe Tess Fish House.” It was very strange but it’s a true story.

Joe/ comaro bob: your a trip man, thanks for the laughs. But i agree with you, Tebow is the man! And when he reaches the superbowl, Tebow ill raise up his staff like Moses, and God will send down lightning killing the opposing team, and victory will be ours!
2 bad he didnt play for us in 98, that lightning idea would of helped out alot against the broncos. ; /

Sanchez sucks, adding Manning and a free agent top reciever would make the Jets AFC favorites. That being said, i dont think their big ego (all talk) deserves to win a title. So id rather see him go to Arizona or Miami.
