Report: Marvin Williams wants out (OK, what’s the joke?)

There haven't been enough moments like this from Marvin Williams. (AP photo)

There haven't been enough moments like this from Marvin Williams. (AP photo)

The Hawks have enough other issues now, with injuries to Al Horford, Jason Collins and Joe Johnson (who couldn’t finish Monday’s loss at Chicago because of a knee injury).

But here’s one more problem — or maybe it’s actually comic relief.

According to ESPN’s Chris Broussard — and I caution all to not treat this with Woodward-and-Bernstein reliability — Hawks forward Marvin Williams wants out. Quoting directly from Broussard’s “True Hoop” blog: “Frustration abounds in Atlanta right now, and sources say Marvin Williams wants out because he wants to play somewhere where he’ll have an increased role offensively. Williams is averaging just 9.6 points per game, his lowest since his rookie season.”

Let’s assume for a minute (or as long as it takes to finish this blog) that this true. Question: Seriously? I know Broussard covers the NBA but this items cries for some context.

This is Williams’ seventh NBA season. He has been a bust. Forget for a moment that the astrophysicist, former general manager Billy Knight, passed up Chris Paul to take Williams. There’s still an expectation that the second pick in the NBA draft will be a solid-to-great player, but Williams hasn’t been close to that.

It’s true that his scoring average of 9.6 points is the lowest of his career. But let’s not suggest that he has been an 18-to-20-scorer in the NBA. His annual averages: 8.5, 13.1, 14.8, 13.9, 10.1, 10.4, 9.6. Career average: 11.6.

Williams has been almost a full-time starter since year two. He has played 458 games. I think we all know by know what he can do.

In 2009, general manager Rick Sund gave Williams, then a free agent, a five-year, $37.5 million contract extension. I’m sure the thought at the time was that, after four years, maybe the small forward would turn all of that athletic ability into something good. But that hasn’t happened. So the Hawks are now stuck with an underwhelming player who makes $7.5 million this season, $8.2875 million next year and a $7.5 million player option in 2013-14.

In other words, Marvin, if you really want out, we hereby give you permission to pick up the phone and find a team that’s interested.

Well if Joe is out for an extended period of time, Marvin should be getting more PT and will either show us he is not a full bust or he will hopefully increase his Trade Value. Perfect timing if you think about it. He wants more pt and Joe may be out for a few games.

I just wish someone would teach him how to walk without doing the “Williams Waddle” I got news for you if your a general manager and your looking at drafting a kid- 1. They don’t work out (Marvin might have one of the worst bodies in the NBA- 2. They walk like they got a corn cobb up their *** 3. He didn’t start on his college team . 4. You may want to pass on drafting them with the 2nd overall pick.

That should have been an easy decision based on the facts above

Perfect example of the linacy (sorry couldn’t help myself) of Hawk management, starting a guy for all these years who can’t play at that level thinking perhaps they will create the illusion that he can. Perhaps the worst collection of talent evaluators ever.

To marvin’s credit, he’s been playing with a back injury.. He did what was necessary and got his surgery this summer and has been playing very well. When he’s on a hot streak, Larry Drew will yank him out… I actually like what I’ve seen out of marvin Williams this year.

The only Hawks who would want to stay are the fringe players that are playing out their careers cashing checks and aren’t sought after commodities. Any player with a brain knows this team is never going to win a thing especially with Joe Johnson, a decent but soft player, as the highest paid, with Horford out of position, with Josh Smith showing up now and then, with Jeff Teague at the point. Who are they kidding, no one.

As their contracts near expiration none will want to stay and Joe Johnson will be the only one left as he is unmovable at his pay level. The Hawks will fall to the bottom of the pack, the value will decline and with this management group there will be no hope in the draft or free agency as they can’t judge talent. The only hope for fans is the sale of the team.

I will never understand the then GM’s thinking of drafting him before CP3 or Deron Williams. I have to agree with everyone on here that Marvin should not have been drafted #2 by no team since his college resume was… well short and unfullfilled. What to do with these Hawks?!?!?!?! Give up whomever on the team and get Dwight even if it’s for just the rest of this season and watch how the fans will come out to see something or someone that is spectacular. And go from there…

Even if you think why!? what will it accomplish when he leaves at end of season. So what… we will have cap space to start over from scratch without JJ’s contract over our head and then maybe the league will see the Hawks for what they are, just an organization to fill out the divisions, like Sacremento. How is the start-up OKC Thunder doing in the rankings..? #sarcasm

If the present day Hawks are not the most mismanaged and boring team in the history of the NBA, then someone please tell me who is. I used to be a huge NBA fan when the game was a fast paced, athletic game that placed a premium on athleticism and basketball ability( i.e. Showtime Lakers in the 80’s ). I even enjoyed watching the Mavs run throught the playoffs last year. I watched the Thunder and the Nuggets game the other night and enjoyed watching Westbrook and Durant work together. I’ve tried to watch the Hawks and they play the most boring and uninspiring basketball I have seen in the league. I don’t understand the complexities of the salary cap, but I would be more than happy to see them cut the dead wood out( J Johnson, M Williams to name a few) and start over.

I actually agree with Marvin. He is the second most sound offensive piece we have outside of Joe Johnson, but he is the at least the fourth option on any given offensive set. When giving moments to carry the offensive load he has stepped up to the plate and more importantly shown the ability to get to the stripe more than anyone on this team. I’d much rather have Marvin than a lot of other players on this team, but of course he was such a huge bust that we can’t see past that to recognize how far he has come. Including being one of the few Hawks players to actually improve part of his game in the offseason.

He’s a top 5 all time bust, and he looks like a supporting character from the Fat Albert cartoons, but he’s actually right. For him to get more scoring opportunities his team needs to get more ball movement, which is not going to happen as constructed.

Heisenberg

February 21st, 2012

I do not like Marvin’s offensive game. He is soft around the basket and a poor finisher. Worse than Teague whose finishing abilities were written about last week. He is a spot up mid-range jump shooter and cannot create his own shots. Has been more effective in a bench role than as a starter. He does seem to defend better than average so he could have some value there. But he is a role player and nothing more so his trade value is low.

The sad thing is that the next 3 picks after Marvin were Deron Williams, CP3, and Ray Felton. DWill and CP3 are all star players and Felton is at least an average pg in the league. All these guys would have been much better fits at the time. In 2005, we already had a young Josh Smith and J. Childress, plust Al Harrington up front. We had Salim Stoudimire and Ty Lue at PG…Obviously, the weakest spot on the team was PG.

Marvin would probably average 15 an 8 on a bad team like the Wizards…But he’s a 6th man at best on most teams with playoff aspirations.

The main problem with this team has always been ownership and the GM’s. We can talk about all the draft day misses and there has been alot. Currently though the main problem is ownership and Sund. Every team in contention goes over the cap and uses there MLE and Mini mid level. The Hawks just do nothing year after year to give themselves a better chance. Its pathetic and sickening. They will not go the extra mile to try to win. Tell me any other contender who would lose a guy like Horford and do absolutely nothing but add Eric Dampier. Hey Jeff, How about Marvin and Hinrich for Kaman? Or would NO not even want Marvin which is probably the best bet. Didnt this mutt Rick Sund say when Horford got hurt we will see when Hawks hit a tailspin before we make a move? 3-7 in last 10 isnt enough for this clown. We will watch the trade deadline pass by and see no movemnet form the Hawks while all other teams in the East add players. Dont bash the players bash the ownership and there puppet Rick Sund.

Sam Bowie was picked of course because they had Clyde Drexler.

The problem of course is that that our GM at the time having no point guard, decided to draft ANOTHER forward after just drafting two forwards with 3 potential PG’s that we did need on the board. To make up for that, he decided to take ANOTHER forward the next year in Shelden Williams and ANOTHER Forward in Al Horford. At least Al is pretty good even if center isn’t his natural position.

Hindsight is always 20/20, at the time of that draft, the buzz was about Marivin’s potential, since he had only played one season at UNC. It was a “the skies the limit” pick, and a definite gamble on Marvins ability to develop his game. As for Chris Paul, the question was about size and durability. IN hindsight, if the Hawks had drafted by position need at the time (as they probably should have instead of drafting the same position over and over again), they would have been much better off, because CP3 blossomed and Marvins potential never got a lot better. And Deron Williams would have been a better fit as well. So it was a gamble we lost on. But everyone is a genius 5 years later who knew better.

Marvin has not been used properly in the 7 years he has been here. If he is a bust, then it is a function of the coaching staff moreso than his lack of ability. If he got 12-15 shots per game he would hardly be a bust. Name 15 small forwards who are better all around players. . . LeBron, Pierce, Granger, Melo,Caron Butler,Iguodala,Gay? Marvin is in the top half of small forwards in the league. I hope he gets traded to a team that will allow him to be a bigger part of their offense and then everyone will know if he is a baller or not.

It took me a few minutes to assimilate Williams with a current Hawks player. My mind drifted back to Freeman Williams who I believe is an ex Hawk and ex Portland Stater. I also seem to recollect that he favored shooting free throws two feet right of center.

Anyway- it has become apparent that Jimmy the Greek missed the part that the Chinese have that extra eye and hand thing that makes them great at basketball. With a population of 2 trillion over there maybe the Hawks should post a want ad.

Also- speaking of China- has anyone kept up with Starbury and his phoenix type rise in over there. Shoes are selling like egg rolls and he speaks fluent Cantonese

Just heard Bill Simmons on Cowherd’s show. He was talking about how your only hope in the NBA is to be really good or really bad. He said a team like the Bobcats is in better shape than the Celtics because Charlotte could potentially land a franchise-player in the draft, where as the Celtics are in no-man’s land.

I’m beginning to think the Hawks should just blow this thing up. Maybe keep Smoove/Horford and Teague, but get rid of everyone else.

Just think, 2 weeks ago Hawks could have traded Williams stait up for Jeremy Lin.

not anymore.
I agree, throw this season in the tank and trade anyone but Teague and Ivan Johnson for Dwight Howard

Say J Johnson, M Williams, J Smith, V Rad for Howard
Start:
PF Keith Benson (pick him back up)
SF Ivan Johnson
C Dwight Howard
PG Jeff Teague
SG Hinrich, Willy Green

would be solid defensive team, maybe best in NBA
Then you attract nice FA because Howard is here next off-season
plus better draft pick because team will be better but lose more games as they take time to jell.

I am not saying Marvin is an all-star. I realize he has not lived up to the potential. However, he has been underused ever since he has been here. He is usually the fourth or fifth option when actually he should probably be the third option and average 10-15 shots a game like another poster said. He shoots a decent percentage but does not have enough shot volume to raise his PPG. He is at his best when Joe and others are out and he is asked to carry the load. When he is assertive he is actually good at getting to the foul line.

First things first. Larry Drew must go. He has in a short time proven he really is Woody Jr. He always has to have someone in his mythical doghouse (teague) just like Woody. He is not as good of a coach as Woody. He must GO. Now rather than later.

And we should do everything we can to give Marvin his wishes. For years I’ve supported this guy while and he is just not going to get it done here. Period. The Hawks should get in the rumored talks between Washington and Charlotte as 3rd team in a Blatche/T. Thomas deal. Washington gets Thomas and the expiring contract of Kirk Hinrich. Charlotte gets Marvin. Who fills a open hole in their roster and maybe going home to Carolina would be the thing to finally get him to step up. With the Hawks receiving Andray Blatche. A young, and sometimes frustrating, big that has some skills and upside that the Hawks needed even when Horford was healthy.

Marvin could be every bit as effective on offense as Josh, but his game is too passive. He’s too content to be the open jump shooter. (Or the Hawks arent asking him to do any more than that.) Needs to develop an inside game, take it to the rim, and get to the free throw line.

The problem is Marvin has such low trade value that the Hawks wont be able to get much for him. Dude has been given every opportunity to succeed but has been average at best. Well if you think the Hawks were a mess before, this will surely help. The Hawks are not really that bad as a team. But with all the infighting moaning and complaining they are going from at least a playoff team to just a team in the NBA lottery. A little humility would go along way for these guys. But it is probably too late for that to do any good. The Hawks need to change the culture of Basketball in Atlanta. They were going in the right direction in 2007, but now it is the blind leading the blind. Does Drew ever sleep??? He looks like he hasn’t slept since the 80’s.

We need to send M Williams, 2012 1st draft pick, and Hinrich to New Orleans for Chris Kaman and Donald Sloan. You throw Donald Sloan in the mix to make the salary numbers work. I believe both teams get what they need, Atlanta needs a big man who can score in the low post and rebound. New Orleans gets an expiring contract, a draft pick and Williams to build its team. If you get Horford back, you can move him to PF and Josh Smith to SF.

moboman, it’s true that hindsight is 20/20 and there definently was a lot of buzz about marvin coming out of college. However, billy knight and crew made one huge blunder in their evaluation of Marvin. When they brought him in they absolutely refused to work him out against other top prospects or any other player for that matter. When he worked out for the hawks he came in and shot jump shots and they fell in love with his magnificent form and “potential”. I distinctly remember thinking they should watch him go against some athletic defenders to see if he could beat somebody off the dribble or post a guy up and score. But nope they didn’t, they chose to watch him workout against the air. I think knight was afraid that Marvin might not perform well and that could have brought some doubt within the org about drafting him. Knight believed that Marvin would grow as a player and he was wrong. It was obvious to me his rookie season that he wasn’t explosive enough athleticly to ever be a great NBA player. Watching him go up against intense competition before drafting him could have made that obvious to hawks management as well.

On a somewhat different note, but still related – the ASG sold the wrong team. If they kept the Thrashers and afforded them the same payroll as the Hawks, within 2 years that team would have immediately become the best bet for the next Atlanta championship.

Yes, I am a Hawks fan – but going to an NBA game where you team has no identity, star appeal or serious chance at going all the way is just nowhere near the cost of going. The NHL is different – there is a passion in a hockey fan base that does not exist in basketball – but you HAVE to put a winning product on the ice and sadly the ASG never really cared!

@layinlow. great post. I always said that if Marvin had to work out against competition his game would have been exposed. What made it worse was that he was so out of shape he couldn’t finish his workout. I watched a lot of UNC games that one year Marvin was there and I never saw this potential that the experts were talking about. He never had any “wow” moments or games that would make you think he could be a great player one day. People fell in love with the form on his jumper and his length. I always thought the Williams kid playing in front of Marvin was better. The same issues he has now he had back in UNC. He had trouble finishing, bad hands, and a weak handle. The only thing Marvin has added to his game that he never had was the 3 point range. It was just too many red flags with Marvin coming out to me. He didn’t look super athletic, wasn’t great at anything in particular on the court, wasn’t a great finisher, wasn’t a great ballhandler.. When I watched Durant in college I knew he had it. He had plenty of moments where you thought “dude is going to be a problem in the League”. I never watched a Carolina game and thought Marvin was anything special.

You wait and see-if Marvin is traded and plays for a good coach and then his career takes off-then who are the Hawks fans going to point to then. Don’t get me wrong-he’s been playin like crap for a long time-but with who? There are some players on this Hawks team-that would be playing better with another team under the right circumstances. Even Joe, yes-even Joe-played better when he was out west with Nash, Stodoumire, and the Matrix-in an offense with Mike D’Antoni. Marvin-as sorry as he is playing (I’m not defending him), would thrive in Mike D’Antoni’s offense or Erik Spoelstra’s offense, or Stan Van Gundy, or Doug Collins, Tom Thibodeau, Rick Carlisle, and even former coaches-Pat Riley, Phil Jackson, and “The Telestrator”-Mike Fratello. You see where I’m going; wrong player? Maybe. Wrong Team-duh, yea. Wrong player, team, GM, owner? H 2 the yea-ah! Remember-if this team is broken up and major Hawks players go to other teams in playoff contention, then IMO-most all will revive their careers outside of this Hawks organization. Iso-Joe would be the only one who-after his contract expires-will retire a very rich man. That is why it’s paramont to see this team. Keeping this team in Atlanta? Well, that’s another chapter in another book.

No Marvin Williams, who was out due to a death in the family.

No Joe Johnson in the fourth quarter, that recurring tendinitis in his left knee flared up again.

No Al Horford, you know he’s out for the season with that torn pectoral muscle.

And no relief in sight for the Hawks, who lost again Monday, this time a 90-79 setback to the Chicago Bulls at the United Center in a game that produced far more tense situations after the action ended.

In what can only be described as calling his team out, usually reserved Hawks Coach Larry Drew lobbed a few shots at his team in the aftermath of their latest lukewarm effort.

“We as a team, sometimes, we come out and play with a sense of urgency; sometimes we don’t,” Drew said. “That’s something we’ve done this year. You can’t play like that.

“Nobody is to blame, but everybody is to blame. We all have to put ourselves in one foxhole and figure it out together.”

Drew’s words might have resonated with the media and may do the same with fans, but the locker room reception was just as lukewarm as the Hawks’ performance against the Bulls.

“What do you want me to say?” Josh Smith said in response to Drew’s comments. “I’ve said all along that we have some things that need to be cleaned up. That’s no secret. But it’s going to take more than one or two guys to do it. And we can’t just talk the talk, we have to be about it, too.”
————

Maybe it would be better to put Josh Smith as your glue guy instead of Marvin Williams. Just saying.

Runs the wing faster. Finishes stronger. Better Post Moves. Rebounds better. Start Ivan at PF and Zaza.

You’re 3 guard lineups are attrocious Drew. What happened to running? And you need your bigs to rebound so you can run. Josh Smith is too busy being sent to the boards and boxing out PFs to run the wing. we got Darkwing Duck running the wings, Hinrich jogging with no finishing ability, Joe isnt overly athletic.

Its funny according to draftexpress Marvin Williams has not developed an iota (outside of 3 pt range) and he is the exact opposite of Josh Smith.

The Hawks have another shot at getting their act together in New York on Wednesday, where they will get their first dose of “Linsanity.”

“It’s put up or shut up time for us,” Smith said. “That’s just where we are right now.”

Marvin Williams has played above average when given legitimate opportunity. Lets recall if you will:

6:00 PM ET, March 27, 2011
Marvin scores 31 pts, 7 rebs, 2 assts against cleveland while playing 43 minutes (Joe Johnson didnt play)

Coverage: TNT
8:00 PM ET, December 16, 2010
Marvin scores 26 pts, 5 rebs, 1 asts against the Boston Celtics while playing 36 mins (Joe Johnson didnt play)

Coverage: SportSouth
7:30 PM ET, December 3, 2010
Marvin scores 22 pts in 34 mins against the Philly Sixers (Joe Johnson didnt play)

February 07, 2009
Marvin scores 29 pts and goes 18-20 from the free throw line against Charlotte (Joe Johnson didnt play)

Marvin is a victim of horrible coaching, lack of opportunity, and a management structure that doesnt know what to do with talent.

You dont draft a guy 2nd overall to groom him to be a role player. Kevin Durant (not by comparison of talents sake) is a prime example of taking a player that high and allowing him the opportunity to grow into the role. When Seattle chose K.D. they traded Ray Allen to the Celtics and got back great value for Ray and opened up the spaces and opportunity for Kevin to become what he is today.

Marvin wouldnt have become Kevin Durant but without Joe Johnson the Hawks would have a better team. I hope they trade Marvin to another team in the east and he destroys the Hawks after resurrecting his career.

Marvin didn’t draft himself. Virtually every draft “expert” rated the top two picks in his draft as Bogut and Marvin; the Bucks took Bogut so it wasn’t a stretch for the Hawks to take Marvin. Everyone knew he was raw and would take some time to develop, but he was considered to have the most upside potential. It’s not his fault that CP3 and DWill turned into top 15 players. Marvin was actually developing nicely until he hurt his back (and that was why the Hawks resigned him). He struggled with a back inury for a few years and it obviously affected him.

As several other posters have noted, the Hawks never used him effectively in their offense. He finally got his back fixed, looked like he was on his way and the Hawks still didn’t use him right. Now he wants to be traded to somewhere where he can be used effectively. Good kid, never complained before, and did everything the Hawks asked him to do. I don’t blame him, and wish him well.

Im not gonna feed into your negativity, but just respond with stats that I have already posted above.

When given a legitimate opportunity to play while Joe Johnson has been out with injury Marvin has played above average basketball. The stats dont lie.

You are correct that isnt a huge sample size but thats because Joe Johnson is durable and reliable at coming up short. If Joe wasnt around and you inflate Marvins numbers based on averages of when Joe wasnt around you would have a borderline all-star player (which is what Joe is) at half the price and the ability to surround yourself with more legitimate pieces like a Chris Kaman.

Then there are people like you who dont do such a good just looking past the obvious which is why you should apply for a job with the ASG. Lol.

Why can’t they both shine? Look at OKC – Durant scores 51 – Westbrook score 40 – in the same game! Marvin is just not assertive enough – he needs to get in positions on the court where he can demand the ball – not on the wings waiting for a spot-up 3 opportunity.

Nobody is saying that Marvin would be the star that CP3 or Deron is. That train has left the station, its admitted that a mistake was made there.

The question is how to get the most out of Marvin. The reality is that Marvin has produced give the opportunity. If Joe wasnt here its more than possible that Marvin could produce number around 17 pts per game with 7 rebs and 2 or 3 asts, Which is exactly what we are getting from Joe (sans the rebs) but for 3.5 times as much money.

Its crazy!

@ IMHO

I didnt go back and find every game that Marvin played well. Your foolish for thinking that in 450 games Marvin hasnt had any other good games than the ones I referenced. Marvin has fallen out of favor in recent years with coaching. Not his fault. Coupled with the fact that he is playing on a shoot happy jump squad with no leadership. No one who should be getting shots is getting them. Hence T-Mac’s comments about playing time, Hence Josh shooting 3’s (still), Hence Teague still not being developed at critical points in the game.

There is alot wrong with this team that has nothing to do with what Marvin can provide when given a true opportunity.

Marvin isnt in the game in the fourth quarter, and you can make the argument that is partly his fault, but how can you really pass blame to Marvin with a management and coaching structure that tears apart everything that comes its way.

STOP BASHING MARVIN MORONS…

You are going to scare the other teams away…

I am Marvin’s biggest fan and value his game…
Points alone, do not tell Marvin’s story…

Marvin cannot exert himself stuck in the corner deferring to Big Pass Joe…
I hate to see him leave, every championship team needs a Marvin…

However, the cost is too high…#2 Overall Pick/ $7.5M extension…
The expectation is greatness, upper echelon, Allstar…
And we all can honestly say, that has not occurred…

The 6′9, 230, versatile F can defend, play multiple positions and shoot the 3…
That has value…he is smart, coachable and fundamentally sound…
Has a champions pedigree but was never given the green light here…
It’s worth mentioning that when JJ is out, Marvin’s avg. increases exponentially…

But to be fair, JJ is not the reason Marvin has not blossomed…
Marvin is not the Nique-esque player we envisioned…
Yes, the metrics are similar, but Marvin doesnt have the agility, explosiveness…
Nique was the complete package – long, athletic, explosive, agile, fast, quick, inside-out…

Marvin is long, somewhat athletic, can shoot the 3…
But cannot create for himself off the dribble…which is his biggest limiting factor…
Marvin is more apt to fall down rather than throw it down…

But in the right system Marvin can be extremely valuable…
He can defend the best athlete on the floor…James, Kobe, Pierce…
Stretch the defense with the 3, hit FT, and provide nice 2/3 options…

Celtics, Wizards, Cavs, Bobcats, Hornets, Spurs, Nuggets, Pistons

Sounds like Marvin got an offer from the Greatest Show on Earth.

[...] The Hawks are on a slide. They lost more games in the past 10 (3-7) than they did in the first 22 (16-6). This isn’t completely unexpected. They’re banged up. They’re worn down. They’re starting to play some better teams. They’re missing their starting center (Al Horford) and his backup (Jason Collins), and this was an undersized team to begin with. It figured at some point that a 16-6 team would have a market correction. [...]

Dream Rumor – Joe Johnson, Marvin Williams, Hinrich for Pau Gasol, Luke Walton, Steve Blake.

Once Horford comes back, McGrady and Teague could be starting back court. Front court would be best in the NBA with Gasol, Big Al, and J Smoothe.

This would give the Lakers a BIG 3 of Joe, Kobe, and Bynum with Marvin coming off the bench to go along with McRoberts, Barnes, Troy Murphy. Hinrich could back up Fisher and be the defensive stopper @ PF the Lakers have needed for years.

The Hawks have drafted horribly over the last quarter century. Take out Horford and J. Smith their record is beyond abismal. I’ll give Jason Terry a nod as decent as well. The rest of their drafting history is arguably the worst of any franchise in any major North American sport. People have said that hindsight is 20/20 in regards to Marvin Williams. He was considered the #2 prospect that year, for some unknown reason. People saw potential in the freshman who was the 6th man on the national championship team. My arguement against that pick was that the Hawks had a PG need and not a small forward need. They had Josh Childress, Josh Smith, and Joe Johnson. I realize he’s a 2G but is pretty much the same body type as a SF. If there wasn’t a lottery, something I think is ridiculous to begin with, the Hawks would have had the #1 pick and would have picked Bogut that wouldn’t have been much better. At least it would have attempted to fill a need since C and PG were both needs. Sadly, I don’t think this pick was even in their top two in bad moves. The Pau Gasol, Lorezen Wright, and another player I can’t mention for Shariff Abdur Rahimm was worst. The fact that the Hawks gave up a #1 pick to get Wright magnified that. Giving up a player and draft picks to sign Joe Johnson because they were afraid that Phoenix was going to match the ludicrous offer was especially silly. No way Phoenix was going to match that offer and they ended up getting a couple of #1s and a serviceable player out of it. Well, he played nicely for one year at least. I personally think Sheldon Williams was a bigger draft bust than Marvin Williams, if that’s possible.

The best suggestion that’s been heard around here in a long time…problem is, you’re only getting 1 #1 out of those 2 guys and it isn’t Marvin. How much did we get for Chills? A 2nd rounder and a TPE for the #6 pick in the 2006 draft? That’s is what is considered an official bust, so no one come on here and suggest we trade for Chills….did you see that matchup against PHX this year?
Our lame duck GM that has been around here 3 years has just ridden the mistakes that Billy Knight made and is getting paid as a basketball expert to resign mistakes we have made over the years.
Marvin is getting paid to play 1/2 of ball games right now….you think any other GM will accept that…..and if Sund comes out and says that Marvin is in his prime, well, that’s the kiss of death.
