Hey look, the Braves have new uniforms. So how about a new finish? (AP photo)
Welcome to this year’s edition of “How They Really Stand,” my ranking of all area sports teams, taking into account wins, losses, direction, potential, coaches, general managers, owners, recruiting coordinators and whether anybody provides us with more civic pride than, say, The Big Chicken (the bar is low).
I’m unveiling this a month earlier than usual because it seemed like a natural break in the sports schedule with the Braves getting ready to start spring training and the Hawks taking an off day between personalities. Two tweaks this year: I’m adding Georgia State football and basketball and replacing the Thrashers with a new entry. (Last year’s ranking in parenthesis.)
1. Braves (1): The best team in town lost 20 of its last 30 games. How about a nice embalming smoothie to go with those chicken fingers? But the Braves looked like a potential World Series team on paper last season until the paper caught fire, and they still seem closer to a title run than anybody else. Then again, that assumes everything that went wrong last season goes right this year.
If you're wondering what the faces of a franchise that is 0-3 in the playoffs look like, well, here you go. (Curtis Compton/AJC)
2. Falcons (2): We know the good (three playoff appearances). We know the bad (three playoff losses). Here’s what I don’t want to hear: “But they’re so much better than they used to be!” The Falcons’ measuring stick should be the rest of the NFL, not franchise history. The heat has been turned up on Thomas Dimitroff and Mike Smith.
3. Dream (8): I still have not been to an Atlanta Dream game. I’ve either had something else to do that day or I didn’t want mess up my perfect nothing-to-do-today day by watching women’s basketball, or stabbing myself with a fork. But I can’t ignore a franchise that has been to the WNBA finals two straight seasons, which I again must note is a long way from getting displaced from Philips Arena because Sesame Street Live was already booked.
4. Hawks (3): Al Horford’s injury should’ve doubled them over, but coach Larry Drew has done a nice job holding things together (save the occasional bizarre out-of-body experience like the Miami game). The biggest problem: duh. Joe Johnson’s contract means little roster flexibility. On a related note: Johnson, the All-Star, scored six points at Phoenix. Josh Smith, the non-All-Star, went for 30 points and 17 rebounds. What’s wrong with this picture?
Mark Richt has been a popular guy on national signing day. Now it's about carrying that through the season. (AP photo)
5. Georgia football (6): Mark Richt will go two straight years without having to face Alabama, LSU or Arkansas in the regular season. Nice lottery hit. Last year’s 10-4 season was a nice bounce-back from 6-7. But losing to Michigan State in the Outback Bowl after getting slammed 42-10 in the SEC title game wasn’t easily digested by BowWow Nation. Celebrations need to extend from signing day to January.
6. Georgia Tech football (7): The Jackets started 7-2 and upset No. 5 Clemson. Then they dropped three of their last four, including blowing a two-touchdown lead to Utah in the last seven minutes of the Sun Bowl. Next season will be an interesting tipping point for Paul Johnson, who went 20-7 in his first two seasons, 14-12 in the next two. And then there’s the matter of trying to win with his recruits.
7. This Space For Lease (5): Our annual dividing line between the general population and ICU.
8. Georgia basketball (4): The Dogs drop four spots from last year. But that’s less about coach Mark Fox as a coach than it is how this season has exposed just how weak the talent base was after the departures of Trey Thompkins and Travis Leslie. Fox needs a gravity-defying, 360-slam in recruiting.
9. Georgia Tech basketball (10): The Jackets won in Athens early this season. They probably should’ve stopped the season then. Brian Gregory is ahead of Paul Hewitt in that people like him, but he’s behind Hewitt in that he needs to prove he can recruit in the ACC. It’s not easy selling kids on “potential,” especially when your arena site is a construction zone.
It all seemed so promising back then for the Thrashers-- and then Don Waddell started picking players. (AJC photo)
10. Georgia State basketball (new): The early euphoria of an 11-game winning streak has faded (the Panthers are 7-6 since), but State could make things interesting in the CAA tournament. Worth noting: Rod Barnes did a nice job cleaning up a mess before getting fired, prior to Ron Hunter’s hiring.
11. Georgia State football (new): It’s impossible not to like Bill Curry. But he took on a difficult job, and going from 6-5 to 3-8 in Year 2 with a slight step up in competition speaks volumes. Next season the Panthers start playing conference games. Buckle up.
12. Team Weasel (surrogate): This entry replaces the Thrashers, now of Winnipeg, or some place on the dark side of the moon, and the three people primarily responsible for the franchise’s floundering and eventual move: Gary Bettman, Bruce Levenson and Don Waddell. If you golf and all of your associates consider you spineless, devious and a general tool, the three will be looking to round out their foursome at the Eternal Damnation Country Club.

Honestly at this point I would put the Dream and number 1 for making the finals and the Hawks as number 2… simply because the Hawks have made it farther in the playoffs than any of the other teams in Atlanta in basically the last ten years! The braves one a championship but it was all the way back in 95. We cant live off that anymore!

The Braves will tell you they won 14 consecutive championships. If you believe that, then you may have put the EPIC Collapse behind you like Fredi and the players say they have. We sincerely believe that the Braves organization needs to come clean with the fans and acknowledge that 14 little signs in the outfield don’t mean squat. While some might say they “won” the division others might say they demonstrated incompetence in the playoffs. That little sign for a 2010 wild card is silliest of all. “Wild Card Champions” – give us a break. And then, there was the EPIC Collapse. Let’s hope Fredi got things figured out in the off season and we will see some good baseball right out of the chute. We was thinking Pastornicky might want to buy some insurance having to play between uh Chipper and Uggla. We heard a rumor Uggla might be wearing high-heels in the field this season in keeping with his new pornindustry image. Shouldn’t hurt him any.

Just so you know Jeff, GT has the number 15 recruiting class coming in next season according to Rivals. The class is highlighted by Robert Carter, the number 28 player in the nation. Also, Stacey Poole from Kentucky is transferring in. He was the number 33 player in the nation last year. Calipari on Poole: “Stacey has the skill set and the work ethic to play well in our system. He’s a slasher who can play multiple positions and a defender that is capable of shutting down people. He should earn more playing time as the season progresses.”

Agreed with Davenpoop. The Braves organization can talk about tradition all they want but they need to recognize their tradition right now is EPIC Collapse. That’s the most recent result and that’s the one we remember clearly. Those little division signs just remind us of early exits in the playoffs. The Hawks may be in disarray but they know how to advance past the first round. Somebody started calling him “Mr. Schuerholz” and he started telling us how good we’ve got it. Smoltz called him something else . . .Homeboy Upstairs. Well, Homeboy is president now and it has been a long time since the Braves won a pennant. We say back up a bus and load up the entire front office. Hire some folks who will deliver a championship. We was once state championship so we know what we are talking about.

A playoff series win in MLB or NBA is equivalent to a playoff game win in the NFL. I’m talking about knocking a team out of the playoffs and advancing. The Hawks have done that. The Braves and Falcons have not.

And you last sentence makes it more telling. They don’t have a home floor to boot! Coaching AND recruiting. That’s one more thing than Fox does and merits a higher standing than that guy for certain. Eaassyy, that is a great idea! A little EPIC Collpase sign for the outfield. That will help them remember and not do it again. It can go next to their other “Championship” signs and especially the 2010 Wild Card Champion sign. Yes, that is a very good idea. We read where we are tedious so we’re going to clean up our act and do better. One thing we are going to do right away and that is buy Jeff a Deer Dog so he can get used to them. They say if you marinate them they are not so gamey. Chipper’s Deer Dogs could give McCann’s Burgers a run for the money. We are going to stick with going to the Dairy Queen before the game because even with a 33% discount on the Deer Dogs the prices are too high for us. If we was Homeboy Upstairs we would cut prices some more and apologize to the fans for charging so much for so long. We’d also sign a major league shortstop and a corner outfielder and add a screwdriver to the Tool Race.

It’s common for a team to progress to a point where the players, management, and the fans believe they are one or two minor tweaks or pieces from the promised land, or just “we expect to be better”. Quite often these teams have reached a plateau of achievement and are closer to regressing than progressing. The shame is, a lot of good organizations self-destruct when this unfolds.
The Braves and Falcons and Hawks are at this point. They are consistently winning teams who HONESTLY figure to do no better with the current cast and quite easily might backstep. Prudent management will grasp the situation, properly evaluate the potential for a rebound/rebuilding/re-arming, and NOT throw out good players and managers in the process.
For every GM-coach combination that MIGHT take the Falcons further there are infinite combinations that LIKELY will take you BACKWARDS. I’d say the same about the Braves if we didn’t get all the Wren pronouncements and Schultzie/Bradley company-line articles proving everyone is in denial. Couldn’t care less about the Hawks, really.

But Greg Maddux ain’t walking through that door. Tom Glavine ain’t walking through that door. John Smoltz ain’t walking through that door. Steve are you forgetting that we wasted an 8 1/2 game lead and got run down by St. Louis? Chipper will be lucky to play in 100 games this year if that. Our right fielder is coming off a year in which he hit 230, and our left fielder hit 260. We are starting a rookie at short and in terms of our pitching well remind me again who is managing this club? Plus we have ownership who look at this team as another entry on their balance sheet. Overall we are no closer to sniffing a championship than the Marlins or Nationals. Plus when we were on top of the division we won one world championship in 14 years. I love the Braves and want them to do well but facts are facts. Laugh away buddy!

@ASCHAN
I think UGA football has a very good chanc to win a championship this year. They have by far the weakest conference schedule of any SEC team and their non conference schedule (minus GT at the end of the year) is an absolute joke with 3 creampuffs in Buffalo, FL Atlantic, and GA Southern. I think with that schedule they’ll go 11-1 pre SEC Championship game so they have a shot.
Unless you intended to just include only pro franchises…..in that case I think you are correct with the Dream, Hawks a long shot but still possible. Falcons and Braves have way too many question marks to be in “Championship” talks for the next year or 2.

Steve, while its still a win, GT is their best non conference competetion they usually play every year by far. Even though it usually is a win, however, most UGA people have admitted since they started running the option there its not a cake walk like it was in the past. Most fans I know say they don’t look past Tech anymore like they used to and that game actually scares some of them now.
Steve

GT scares UGA fans? Really? Until Tech actually beats UGA a few years in a row, I doubt that is the case. I personally look at Tech like I look at Kentucky. Plus the game is in Athens this year. UGA has actually done a good job of scheduling harder teams, minus 2012. Boise St. twice, at Arizona State, Oklahoma State twice, etc.

I’ve never had a deer dog, either, but hamburgers and sausage from venison are excellent. Better tasting than beef and less fat, so they don’t shrink so much when you cook them.

Steve, I’m just telling you what 99% of ACTUAL UGA FANS have told me from the own mouth. You’re just like alot of other UGA fans but more like ND and Ohio State fans in the you read, hear, and believe what you want to and your opinion is the only one that matters.
“UGA has actually done a good job of scheduling harder teams”………….I wouldn’t exactly say that were true because the only halfway tough teams that have scheduled in recent years were Okie State and Boise State, both of those last 2 game they got spanked like an unruly child on National TV respectively by each. And even if that statement were, “has” should be replaced with “had.” For all the flack former AD Evans rightfully took in his tenure the one thing he did that some people can respect was that he wanted to broaden the OOC schedule by scheduling teams from other big conferences (although some were the bottom feeders in those conferences). You can’t say the same for McGarity because he almost immediately yanked Oregon off the upcoming schedules when he was hired, most likely for fear of being humiliated by top notch competition they normally don’t play out of conference.

Sorry but you simply cannot put the Hawks number 1.
Quite frankly, I don’t care how many playoff series they have won .. does anyone here really believe they have the team to win it all? Not even close. Just because the NBA let’s almost half of it’s teams into the playoffs when only 4 per conference should get in doesn’t mean teh Hawks are close to winning. It just means they get to play and occasionally beat other teams that also have next to no shot of winning.
If the NBA playoffs were structured like baseball the Hawks would only make it about half of the last 10 times they got in, and then they would lose the first series EVERY time.
Braves > Hawks.
Actually, I would put UGA football ahead of the Hawks as well. While they have been in purgatory the last couple of years, I still think they could put together a string like their #2 and #3 finishes in the polls a half decade ago. All it takes in either of those years is not losing to Florida or SC and they are in the NC game most likely. That’s much closer than the Hawks.

In regards to the Falcons: Smitty and Dimitroff are on the clock. They got one year to figure it out. Arty Blank is losing his patience!
In regards to the Dawgs: What’s the benefit of not playing LSU, Bama, or Arkansas in the regular season, winning 10 or 11 games, and then get hammered by one of them in the title game? It just reinforces the fact that the SEC East and consequently UGA are second tier. Until UGA beats one of those teams, second tier is their reality.

Jeff, not sure how you rate the Hawks above UGA or even Ga Tech for that matter. At least UGA and Ga Tech can refresh their rosters and possibly have a more exciting season next year, especially UGA who seems to be on the mend. The Hawks as you pointed out are in a roster deadlock due to the Johnson contract. There’s little hope in seeing them do anything more. In fact, the East is looking stronger this year. They might not even get to the second round.

Now, fix the d-line and fix the O-line, squirt some glue on whites gloves so he will quit droping passes (when the pass hits his hands…some hit him on his head and chest) but point made. QB time and protection, and catched balls go a long way toward winning games.

3. Falcons – Depends on cuts, decent FO, questions about GM and QB

Honestly ASG has blinded a lot of people to their operating standards. If they were going to win us a championship, this would be the year. They had clear needs after Al went down and signed Erick Dampier who was not the best option on the market. They won’t go over the tax threshold to win a championship, no matter what drivvel they spew.
I’ll go ahead and be the first to start this…ASG will choose not to sell again to a local owner (or someone that wants to keep the team here) and the Seattle Hawks will be a reality in the next 10 years. These guys are clueless on how to run a sports franchise.

Questionable relevance. Showing my age here, but didn’t the Yankees win like 14 pennants in 16 years and then two years removed (in 1966) finish LAST in the AL? And with largely the same cast as 1964?
The good news for the Braves is September 2011 is OVER, not that we fans are over it yet. The bad news is the roster hasn’t turned over.

With the American League team’s looking for DH hitter’s, this would be a good time fer the braves to trade Chipper.Chipper would be in the lineup every day and maybe extend his playing career.Prado playing everyday at third would return his batting aveage to above 300.I don,t understand FREDI , he has not made one tough decision since he became the braves manager.

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that you’d regard professional women’s basketball as something only slightly less bad than the idea of causing yourself physical harm, but still, it’s not a great message to send. This is why no one takes the WNBA seriously even though the Dream quite nearly won it all last year. Maybe keep your forks out of reach and actually try watching a game sometime. You might just be proven wrong.
And while I love all forms of general slagging-off of the terrible ownership group that killed the Thrashers, I think it’s strange that the Gladiators were completely omitted from this list. Considering they’ve been atop the South Division for a while now, and are in fact ranked first in the Eastern Conference, I really think they could make the playoffs. (Even with their starting goalie being out for the rest of the season with an injury!) Sure, they’re ECHL, but if the two-year-old GSU football team merits a mention, a nine-year-old professional-level team could be thrown a bone here and there, especially considering they’re Atlanta’s One and Only now.

why do people think that the hawks are better? In the playoffs they always take people who suck( Miami, Milwaukee) to game 7. then get swept in the next round. The falcons have lost to the eventual world champs 2 out of 3 times, and the other time was to the runner-up.
Don’t get the misguided playoff thing. Bulldogs are a top 10 team next year. They definitely should be ahead of the hawks. Maybe ahead of the falcons as well.

“With the American League team’s looking for DH hitter’s, this would be a good time fer the braves to trade Chipper”
Teams might want Chipper’s bat, but no GM in his right mind would trade for Chipper’s salary at this point, which means the Braves couldn’t afford to pay the quality of player they need in return if they have to keep paying Chipper. They’re already paying $10 million for Lowe to NOT pitch here. And, although Chipper hardly terrifies lefties, taking his switch-hitting bat out of the lineup could be devastating. Unless they adjust the roster in Spring Training the Braves figure to struggle mightily against left-handed pitching this year. Remember, last year’s answers were Joe Mather and Dan Uggla, and neither one hit a lick against lefties.

Jeff, good article bud, that was a great read! The ONLY difference that I would make is the UGA Football team should be ranked higher than the Falcons.
Here is my rationale: If both teams (the Falcons and the Dogs) agreed to play an exhibition game against one another, and both teams performed at the same level they played at in the last game of the season (Falcons in the playoff and UGA in the Bowl) then Georgia would easily come out on top. As a matter of fact, I think that the final score would be something like 24-3, Georgia.

Albert, I think the UGA football ticket is the best value as a sports ticket. I am a Dog fan too, but we seem to come up short every year despite having access to great talent. The players’ decisions on where to play tell you where the better football is being played, backed up by the opposing teams’ records.
Richt is the problem in Athens-no SEC Championships until the problem is dealt with. Dogs have one major advantage over all other local sports-the undying loving of their fanbase.

The UGA Lady Dawgs basketball team has been one of the most successful teams for over 30 years. Avg 24 wins a year, have only missed one NCAA tournament, and have been to several Final Fours. No championships, but still a very successful team. Women’s basketball doesn’t get much coverage, but its a very good sport. A lot closer to the way basketball was intended to be than then men’s game.

I can’t name one player or name the coach who changes every year. You write garbage all the time to get people fired but this is over the top. Ask any true sports fan in Atlanta. This should be an annual report, not what ’s been going on the past three years. The Dream is the only team that knows what it takes and has what it takes to be a championship contender. Angel McCoughtry is the only proven leader on an Atlanta sports team.
What does Chipper, Matt Ryan, and Joe Johnson have in common? They all disappear when the team needs them to make big plays for a win. They’re also overpaid for what they bring to the table.

Better yet, here’s the production report for a few teams around here:
Dream = championship appearance; only realistic team to win a championship
Hawks = 2nd round playoff appearance; means they actually won a playoff series. Lost in game 6, and maybe a game away from a conference appearance.
Bulldogs football = SEC championship game appearance
Falcons = playoff appearance; all of those pro-bowlers and no points in a playoff game; Matt needs to make the stats count for something
Braves = a winning season; no pennant, not playoff; no young talent at 3rd base.

Look at all the great pros the Yellow Jackets have had. Keepin’ it real, the ACC is just a better basketball conference and until recently Tech has been in the better half of the conference consistently. UGA is another story. They are at the bottom of the pack of a solid, but not great, conference.

The Falcons seem to be getting it. Watching them the past four seasons has been a pleasure. But watching the melt downs in the playoffs is not only frustrating it’s insanity (repeating the same mistake over and over and over again expecting different results). Defensive talent is out there. Take a look around the league and you see the late round picks that wind up all pro. Can you say “Better Scouting”? Coaching changes are only the begining. It’s not the fix.The old cliche’ “Offense will sell tickets but Defense wins championships” still applies. The next 3 months will be quite interesting to see what comes out of Flowery Branch.
“Mark Fox has got a ton of talent here in this state.” I’m sick of hearing that tired old statement. So what. I don’t care if a point guard comes from North Dakota. If he can average 15 points and 18 assists per game and get UGA into March Madness then as Dr. Hunter S. Thompson said, “Buy the ticket, take the ride” and recruit him. (I wonder if he was related to David Thompson.)

I’m a Georgia/Atlanta sports fan as much as anybody, but I’m not in the business of fooling myself. The biggest downfall of Georgia sports teams is that our highest paid players are holding us back. At the end of the day, Georgia/Atlanta sports is stuck!
Chipper’s been one of my favorite all-time Atlanta sports athletes. We’ve held on to Chipper too long to get anything worthwhile for him. His time for leading the Braves back to a World Series is over. We probably won’t get better until he’s gone. Braves are stuck!
Joe Johnson is a good complementary player for a squad with other superstars. Rick Sund is a fool for paying JJ like he’s going to lead the Hawks to a championship. Throwing money at a tier 2 player will not make him a tier 1 talent. We can’t afford to improve the team. Hawks are stuck!
Matt Ryan has been a great stat stuffer in his first four seasons. If it wins post season games and ultimately a Super Bowl, then I’m happy. However, Matt the Stat is not winning when it counts and he’s getting paid a lot of money to get the job done. May not be popular, but we need to think about creating a safety net at the QB position. What if Matt doesn’t improve? I don’t want to be 6 yeare in, and 0-5 in the post. Until Matt the Stat’s contract is up, Birds are stuck!
As far as Mark Richt…..if Saban had our talent, we would have at least one championship by now.

For those saying the Falcons are in the best position remember they have 1/2 a draft and 17 players up for free agency, new offensive and defensive coordinators and an aging running back. I’m not saying they are going to take a step back but the cards are stacked against them doing anything more than what they have the past 4 seasons.
As for Greggory not proving he can recruit in the ACC, did Paul Hewitt ever prove he could? I mean he pulled in some great classes but his greatest teams were products of his first 2 seasons on the Flats (03-04, 04-05 seasons), after then he pulled in a lot of talent but spent way too much time building around 1-and-doners who not surprisingly to everyone but him it seemed, were gone after one year (every year he seemed convinced that they were coming back).
Greggory has proved he can recruit already, the thing he has to prove next is whether or not he can build around them, will he develop his players like Hewitt did at the start or will he rely on the strength of his class like Hewitt did unsuccessfully during the 2nd half of his tenure.

It’s not logical to compare Hawks and Braves playoff records. There are 30 teams each in the NBA and MLB. The Hawks have made it no further than the final 8, same as the Braves. If the NBA used the same standard as MLB — division winners and the top 2nd place team — the Hawks would have made the playoffs twice, 08-09 and 09-10. And the Hawks have absolutely no chance of getting better.
