Brent Grimes has proven to be the best cornerback on Falcons' roster. (Johnny Crawford/AJC)
(This is the third in a series of blogs in which I’ll focus on some high-profile Falcons’ veterans and their respective uncertain future with the team.)
The Falcons might try to find some solace in the fact that they lost in the playoffs two straight years to the ultimate Super Bowl champion. But that somewhat falls into the lipstick-on-a-pig category. That defense would carry more weight if the team had played like a legitimate contender in the playoffs and not lost by lopsided scores of 48-21 (Green Bay) and 24-2 (New York).
In this corner in the past few weeks, we’ve focused on a few possible ways the Falcons can fix their roster. We debated the future of running back Michael Turner and whether his salary ($5 million) and his age (30) next season and signs of wear merited him being brought back.
We also focused on five high-profile acquisitions (two draft, three free agency) the front office has made and what direction to go with them. (Conclusions: Cut tackle Sam Baker and fullback Ovie Mughelli; keep Ray Edwards and Dunta Robinson; stall and assess defensive tackle Peria Jerry.)
Today’s topic is free agents. How the Falcons view their own free agents is the first step to setting their offseason strategy (free agency and draft). General manager Thomas Dimitroff and coach Mike Smith will prioritize their 17 players who are on the verge of hitting the open market. We’ll find out what their priorities are soon enough. Here’s mine:
• 1. Sign cornerback Brent Grimes: He is team’s best cornerback (Robinson’s salary notwithstanding). If it comes to this then the team must put the “franchise” tag on him. (That would guarantee Grimes a one-year contract at the average of the top five salaries cornerbacks in the league.) That’s the only leverage the Falcons have in negotiations. There’s also a chance Grimes’ age (29 in July) could dissuade some bidders from breaking the bank for him.
• 2. Sign middle linebacker Curtis Lofton: This will be an interesting decision because Mike Nolan’s defense seems to place more emphasis on defensive backs than linebackers. Lofton is solid. But as our Darryl Ledbetter pointed out, Lofton plays on third down and the Falcons’ third-down defense ranked only 29th. So if the team now considers him a first- and second-down player, that will factor into negotiations. Still he would be a huge loss.
• 3. Sign center Todd McClure: He’s wearing down and turns 35 in two weeks. But he can still play and the team doesn’t have a replacement, so it’s better to build around him next season. The offensive line is the biggest issue on the team but that’s not because of McClure.
That’s it for the top priorities. Here’s the next level down.
• Defensive end John Abraham: He is the Falcons’ best pass rusher but he’s strictly a situational player now. Keep him at a moderate price.
• Free safety Thomas DeCoud: He’s not good enough to be a starter (we’ve seen that) but he could be a solid depth guy in nickle- and dime- situations. Again, keep him if you can but he’s not worth blowing the budget over.
• Wide receiver Harry Douglas: He’s finally showing signs of getting back to full strength, but the fact remains he’s only the No. 3 receiver so he can only be paid like that. If other teams want to pay Douglas like a starter, the Falcons can’t match. Otherwise, he’s a keeper.
• Wide receiver Eric Weems: I put him on the same level as Douglas, the difference being that Weems returns kicks. It might come down to keeping only one or the other.
Bottom tier: Frankly, I don’t care what they do with these guys:
• Defensive end Kroy Biermann: He slid this season and isn’t the impact pass-rusher he used to be.
• Running back Jason Snelling: If Turner is released then I suppose Snelling’s role could increase. But otherwise, he’s a non-factor in this offense.
• Linebacker Mike Peterson: I love talking to this guy. Every player should have his passion for the game. I’m just not sure if he has anything left in the tank.
• Others: Kirk Chambers (tackle), Kelvin Hayden (cornerback), Reggie Kelly (tight end), Chris Redman (quarterback), Brett Romberg (guard-center), James Sanders (safety), Joe Zelenka (long snapper).
– PART 1: Michael Turner might have to be let go
– PART 2: Fixing 5 mistakes starts with Sam Baker

Two years in a row the falcons 1 and done and the team that dominates them win the SB. Falcons problem is they bring in guys who only care about money. That isn’t the case with the two teams that played last night.

What ever they do if Decoud is still on this team next year I will know we aren’t going anywhere. The reason is no talent evaluater would keep that kid on the team unless he’s the 4th string safety and a pro bowl type special teams guy.

I agree on Grimes, but I’m starting to think Lofton is the next BROOKING(S) !!!
He’s great at making tackles 5-10 yards after the line of scrimmage, gets free shots at QB’s for sacks, always whiffs…he’s decent in pass coverage but not as good as Spoon.
Grimes is a sure thing, Abe…if he wants to come back on a Tony G. type deal I’ll be alright with it and think it will help sure up our D-Line…but again on Lofton…he’s gonna demand a big time contract…is he as good as Bowman, Willis, Lewis, Bishop, etc…he just doesn’t seem to make “impact” type tackles and plays very much, and isn’t that the job of the LEADER of the defense and MLB?

Gotta disagree on Grimes. He will want too much $$, and he is not worth max $$.
Look @ the Super-bowl last night — both teams had average corners at best. You don’t win in the big leagues being stacked at corner — just ask the Eagles.
I agree that Loftin & McClure are must re-signs. Abe is also a must(can you imagine a pass rush here w/o him)?
After these guys, I say keep Douglass & Decoud…..
..Bye bye to Bierman, Grimes, Snelling & the rest.
Sign Carlo Nicks from N.O.!!!!!
also, after watching Boley in on every tackle last night, I wonder if Arthur even mentions this to the prodigy of pro football — T. Dmitroff.

lofton is a 2down linebacker who is going to want to get paid like a top 3 linebacker. lofton isn’t a difference maker like a patrick willis or ray lewis in their prime. marginal players have shown that they can do a great job for a fraction of the cost. i.e. pat angerer, colin mccarthy, chase blackburn.
let grimes, lofton and abe all walk. go out and spend big money trying to lure mario williams here. let akeem dent compete for the starting middle linebacker job.

I agree with Mike – Snelling was drastically underutilized last year. I almost thought they were intentionally doing it to use up the rest of what was left in Turner’s tank, get Quizz some experience, and save Jason for ‘12 (while keeping him under the radar for other teams looking for a productive RB). He runs with much more aggressive/speed/quickness/cutting ability that Turner has been, and can be valuable alongside Quizz. Cut Ovie – I think they need to get away from the fullback set anyway.
Unless Turner shows up at spring practice around 235 lbs or less, cut him. Too overweight, too slow, no lateral movement at all – most of his runs end up with him running into the backs of our OLinemen.

None of these moves will impact team’s ability to achieve elite status and win a championship. What will is a top down attitude change to move players from comfortable to hungry. Until this happens, we’ll continue to see overpaid/underperforming players continuing the trend of mediocrity in ATL.
On another note, why does the field turf in the GA dome look like a washed out grey on tv yet other indoor fields look bright green?

I not attached to any of our free agents except Lofton.. If grimes and Abe come asking for a big pay day. Let them go!! Money is definately needed to be spent on the line scrimmage. In part, you’re going to have to let the new DC evaluate them and give his input, but, that being said…
Abraham simply can’t play enough downs to command top dollar. He only has value if he is getting 15+ sacks.
Supes is exactly right on Lofton. Good athletic ability, but makes ZERO plays. He can’t hold Patrick Willis’s jock. I would try to sign Lofton for some sort of reduced amount with multiple years, but if some idiot thinks he’s worth $5+ mil a year, let him go.
You must keep Grimes if his knee is healthy. He is an absolute playmaker who almost never gets burned.

I find it hilarious that people are calling the Giants secondary so-so. Ross and Phillips are top notch safeties. Combined with the D-line of the Giants Ross and Phillips are great in double coverage when needed and bring some real pop when the big hit is needed. Nolan is a great defensive mind and will do a great job utilizing the players he deems useful to his strategy.

“Lofton plays on third down and the Falcons’ third-down defense ranked only 29th.” So, you’re saying it won’t matter if you take away one of their two best players on third down??? You won 10 games; take away Lofton you might win 5, who knows?
Defensive rankings are extraordinarily deceptive because they’re based on yardage.
With Grimes you’re going to have matchup problems with big receivers and problems keeping him on the field. But he’s the most athletic guy out there and he does generate turnovers. His cause would be aided greatly by a pass rush, William Moore staying on the field, and a better free safety.
You’ve been trying to build a younger more athletic team. I agree, Falcons can’t let the young building block players walk. To return to the playoffs some of the younger players on the o-line and d-line just need to improve and play better. If they do, Falcons will tread water. If they don’t, the Birds will take a step back before making their next move. Thinking you’re going to put this team in the Super Bowl next year would appear to be a pipe dream; it’s like the Braves, far too many question marks and key players with little to no upside potential.

You can’t really talk unless you actually know what the deck of cards you’re playing with (in terms or players)…
Grimes was a bargain for you for years (5), now is his to get paid, he’s earned it! The league’s CBA is structured that his time is now (he’s “franchise tag” worthy), if Tony Gonzalez is worth 7.5 million for one year, guess what? The market place (set by the Falcons) has spoken… But oh pooh, dang it, you Falcons fans want a Mercedes-Benz; but you only have Lexus budget! You should not have over spent on the face of the franchise and certain other pieces in 07, 08, and 09… You can’t have it all!

Disagree with McClure and Biermann. McClure can be replaced, and I’m tired of seeing the o-line getting thrown around like rag dolls, putting our QB under duress. Time to revamp the entire line, in my opinion.
Biermann is good, but he doesn’t get much help with a situational Abraham and invisible DTs. There’s also rumor of him playing linebacker in 3-4 packages for Nolan. He might be valuable under Nolan for now until he can get more players that fit his scheme.

“most of his runs end up with him running into the backs of our OLinemen.”
And WHY would that be? Because the OLinemen are getting stood up and pushed back too much. I’m not saying Turner is the answer moving forward, but he’d be a lot closer to a 1600 yard back with a better offensive line like he had two years ago. They HAVE to fix the offensive line and get a pass rush or they aren’t going anywhere in the playoffs. There’s lots of ways to generate offense, but they all require blocking up front.

Keep Grimes, Mcclure,Lofton if he doesn’t break the bank. How many times did we see Lofton with his back to the ball 20 yards downfield? Too Many/ Hopefully, that will change with Nolan. Let Decould go!!
Man, that guy has metal hands/ makes one tackle early in a game, acts like he hit lotto and the rest of the game was out of position, juked on moves. spent way too much on Tony G. Keep Bierman at low price. Keep Snelling as I still think he is a reliable back. Bye to Ovie/ like him but wants too much money.

Why are the only options with Turner to cut or trade him. Anyone consider that with a new OC (who isnt a pouting child) that changing Turner’s role along with bringing up Antoine Smith or Dimitri Nance, along with J Rock to balance the carries.

You are crazy if you think we should just get rid of Turner! The Birds are effective when Turner can pound (see Giants) and have another change of pace back. How much longer can turners knees and body support his running style. Would love to see what snelling and rodgers could do as full timers splitting carries like jacobs and bradshaw.

Decoud is a backup safety at best. He can either take backup pay here or go somewhere else and take backup pay. It’s gonna be very hard to sign Grimes with the amount of money already thrown away on Robinson. Grimes is the best corner is this soft zone scheme the Falcons have played but is he a fit for the type of play Nolan will require is the BIG question. I believe Abe would be willing to give a hometown discount for a 2 or 3 year deal. Say 3 yrs 15 mill 10 guaranteed. At his age he’s not gonna get much better on the market. I may be the only one but I believe Hawely will start at center and McClure will be the backup. Biermann and Snelling both are probably gone…know big deal there.

When Turner was out a few games 2 years ago, Snelling showed his worth running & better in the passing game. Then after injury MM decided to use Turner up & not utilize Snelling even tho he had proven himself. Then we draft Quizz & he isn’t used. I think we need to let Turner go, hopefully a trade. Use Snelling & Quizz.
Blalock & Clabo got $6 & $5 million contracts. How much does a good OL cost? Apparently 30 or 40 million. I don’t know but we need one and Baker isn’t part of it. Wish I knew more about Hawley & Johnson.
With most teams going with TE for blocking, let Ovie sign a more reasonable contract or find a new team that might pay him.
We have to pay D. Rob. (still under contract) so let’s hope a new scheme is the answer. He’s not a cover corner but not a bad one either. We have to give Grimes the money. Just because we had him for less while he was learning the position doesn’t mean we let him go and try another $10 million experiment to replace him. Owens and Franks didn’t show any glaring mistakes later on in the season. Maybe that will help in the nickel. Sanders seems OK. Others think DeCoud a bust. Jury still out here. Price, etc.
Free up some money and get proven DL. Abes money could help going toward that. Hope we keep Kroy & try some 3-4.
Like to keep HD but only with 3rd WR money. Couldn’t someone else return punts & KO besides Weems. Maybe Franks. That would be money saved. I think (hope) Kerry Meier will be implemented and be good with DK @ OC.
I wish I knew more about contracts and guarenteed money and how they affect the cap..
Anyway that’s my take.

2 point safety, Welkers drop, and Manningham catch were the game clinchers.
Last drives (by both teams) would have been run differently with 2 less points for NY.
Welker’s drop on NE’s next to last possession was THE drive killer, and gave NY the opportunity to win with only a field goal. And eat a lot of clock, which led to NE having to let NY score a TD.
Manningham’s catch was reminiscent of Tyree, pushing NY downfield for the winning score. It was a perfectly placed pass by Manning.
Luck and skill is a great combination.

Rosy @ 1:44 pm – agree with all. The part about Grimes losing a jump ball tho was on a play where he didn’t have position. He was blocked out. CB is a very difficult position to play and sometimes even the best get burned. Remember, you’re trying to cover someone that is usually tall & fast that knows where they are going and you don’t. You jokers say dump Grimes? Have we not learned that if we get rid of a young corner because he commands a significantly higher salary on the free market, we SUCK and then after we get torched a year we go out and pay a significant salary to fill that hole i.e. Robinson. let me explain something that is HUGE. This has turned into a pass happy league like never before. Corner backs are going to COST accordingly. If you got a good corner you better keep him! Because you are going to have to PAY EITHER WAY! We let Foxworth go and he was playing EXCEPTIONAL then we get burned and go sign Robinson and luckily Grimes played well. You have got to PAY BIG MONEY FOR A GOOD CORNER. Keep Grimes. KEEP HIM. KEEP HIM. Did I say I would KEEP HIM?!
Let Abraham go and Brees and Newton and Rogers and half the qb’s in the league will eat our defense up. You KEEP him too if you can until you have a replacement. Can you imagine what Brees will do to us twice every year? Thats enough to not make the playoffs and NEVER win the division. Lose Abraham and Grimes? WOW. The new DC will have an even BIGGER job to do.
Cut Turner? And who is going to replace him? You want Snelling gone too? WOW. Why not just not have a team in 2012? Without your 2 best defensive players against the pass and a left with 100 lb Jaquizz?
You cant draft a corner and expect good things any time soon. You can expect BAD things if he plays his first year maybe 2 years. If there is a good one in free agency, you will have to PAY again and HOPE he works out or you pay BIG money.
Keep Grimes. He hasnt hit his peak yet. You might as well because you will be paying somebody BIG!

Why give Gonzalez $7 million for one year, but “balk” on Abraham? Without Tony, we still have Roddy and Julio. Without Abe, we have nothing in terms of pass rush. Making decisions with the “heart” instead of “head” will be the death of this franchise. Same goes for McClure. His time should be up.

After watching the final few weeks of the playoffs leading up to the Super Bowl I have decided that we need a possession receiver in addition to Gonzales. Roddy had a terrible year as evident by his league leading 16 drops. He can’t be counted on to make a third down catch. He cost us FOUR first downs against the Giants that would have at least allowed us to run 12 more plays. I believe he will be the most overpaid player currently under contract when we cut Baker.

Everyone on here is missing the point. Coaches have too place players in schemes that will better the team and the players. The falcons have been running the wrong schemes and using the wrong places too perform these schemes. For example, DR is bump and run corner back but the falcons have been using him in zone coverage?????. But we as fans, blame DR???/. Now they have a pair of coaches that will use players with their natural abilities and then they will win. Manning lost his first two playoff game and now he has two RINGS. Ryan lost his first three … He will win three RINGS. The coaches were the problems guys

Now that we’ve all witnessed what may go down as one of the greatest super bowl game we’ve seen so far, I think it’s safe to say that after looking at all the Falcons games this year, including their 1 and done, IMHO, I’ve come to the conclusion that overall, the Falcons aren’t as bad as some other non-playoff teams, but weren’t as good as the local media were hyping them to be. Once again, the Atlanta fans have been duped, and will continue to be thought of as ignorant non-football viewers that don’t know anything about the game of professional football and have no idea what is takes to win regular and playoff football. I think that is an insult to the fans. First of all, Atlanta is a diverse city with the current population at least, maybe even half, from some other city, who’ve had decent football or Super bowl caliber teams. The good ole boys-would rather have a dumb down version of what that fan is, and that will just “be glad to be there” at the dome with little, if any expectations for an emerging and impatient populace, that would prefer higher expectations of their professional teams- whether football, basketball, etc. Meanwhile, there seems to be, an eerily predictor-of who will win a future super bowl game; that is- any team that beats the Falcons in the first round or bye (if the Falcons ever get a future playoff berth). Last year, it was Green Bay, this year- NY Giants. Another predictor-may be a myth, but it’s also eerie, as well. Research shows that no NFL team that has a mascot that has wings ever won a super bowl. We can dream, but when it comes down to it-and it’s not like the Falcons never were at the big dance (1998). Then, we lost that one to the Broncos, whereby, their off- the- field moral misgivings, were seen as the main culprit (revisit that history) to their untimely implosion on the field which-at that time, seemed to be a curse on this Falcons’ organization. With Mr. Blank as the new owner of this current team-hopefully, that trend will not continue-but first-can we even make it to the dance?

I could argue that Jason Snelling is A. more valuable and B. better than Turner. Snelling punches a hole harder and more decisively than Turner, and seems to get more yardage out of a run because of it. He also has better hands coming out of the backfield for an additional QB pass target.
I’d also cut Eric Weems last September if I could.
Kickoff returns have been snuffed out with kickoffs moved up. I can’t even RECALL a memorable Eric Weems return this season. It’s not his fault; the league just tweaked their rules and made him unnecessary. Anybody can take a knee in the end zone. That’s why you chose to keep Harry Douglas if it comes down to one or the other.

Wow. let your best DE and CB go. You don’t have salary cap space to make a big splash in “not so Free” Agency if you do. You guys obviously aren’t aware of your team’s sitiuatuion. You say Brent is too small and gets dominated…that’s very rare…he plays his heart out, never causes problems, and has been on the end of amazing defensive plays that saved you a game or two. I’ve wintessed him basically shutdown Calvin Johnson and he’s like a smurf compared to that guy.
You say let Abe walk? Yes he will demand a salary worth his play. You claim he’s a situational pass rusher…is that b/c he chooses to be or b/c of the way your DC made it. You say he’s too old…yet he’s the only one getting pressure to the QB.
You say he lost a step/or gets man-handled. This guy is probably held more than any other DE in the league & never gets a call thrown his way. This is one example…the ref even had a BS expalanation.

Man, Rosy, you must see the team through your rose colored glasses. 9.5 sacks vs 5 is a big diff…particularly when no one else is putting up more than 5.Jared Allen had a great year and is a very good DE. Babin had a good year as well. Ware is a pass rushing LB all he does is run at the QB…pretty easy. JA55 play according to the scheme you put him in…dropping in coverage, defending the run, etc. He hasn’t played with a legitimate end on the other side of him since he’s been here.
he may not be the best in the league, but sure isn’t the worst.

I think we should keep Grimes, if he doesn’t try to break the bank. Keep Lofton, Douglas, and McClure. If we can trade Turner get two draft picks for him, i’m good with him leaving and keeping Snelling. We need another defensive line player, either end or tackle. If we go to a hybrid 3-4 defense then i’m gain for keeping Biermann as a linebacker because of his high motor. If we stay with the 4-3 Biermann has to go. Re-watched some of the games and teams target side of the field he’s on to run on. Just my opinion. DeCoud, the jury is still out on him. He makes plays but he makes alot of bonehead mistakes that usually leads to big plays or touchdowns. Him and D. Robinson on the same side of the field, just seems like they have bad communication problems. Hopefully Nolan keep him focused and teach him about angles to backs/receivers. Now JA55, everyone talks about his 9.5 sacks and how he lead the defense pass rush. He did lead them in sacks and he does get held alot but its hardly ever called for him, like other top notch defensive ends. But more than anything his 9.5 sacks came mostly against the young QB’s. Of his 9.5 sacks 5.5 came against rookie QB’s. His 4 other sacks, 2 came against the Bears(game one, before the bears got their O-line blocking properly), 1 came against the Lions and the other against the Bucs. I’m all about letting him walk, unless he resigns for 2 year 5mil deal or something cheap like that. me personally i’m ready for Sidbury to get more playing time. i say let Sidbury burn start and make Abe a situational pass rusher. Doing that will also save him for playoff time, if we make it back next year. We need a young legit defensive line player. Hopefully Edwards comes back in better shape and health. I’m ready for the pieces to start falling in place and let the 2012 season start now. Peace out and Go Falcons!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Franchise Grimes. Definitely keep Snelling. I like the BeerMan, but getting married brought down his production–too many red carpets, and not enough red zone pressure. Weems can do everything–just nothing great. Lofton MUST be re-signed. Douglas needs to be kept, but not at the price of anything more than a 3rd receiver. I bet he’ll get offers for starter money. Sign McClure. Sign DeCoud.
Draft a LT, TE, G, DE, and RB…maybe in this order.
Does anyone know why Cliff Mathews didn’t play? Is he hurt? Can he help at DE? Also, is Kerry Meier still alive? He ate up a nice draft pick. Is Sidbury still a “project”? Do 5th year “projects” deserve roster spots? And, where is Thomas Brown and D. J. Shockley these days?

The Falcons have a lot of tough decisions to make.
I got a headache fomulating my perspective of what
needs to be done, and gave up.
I came up with two focal points:
1) Ryan has to “step it up” next year.
. If he is not capable of doing so, he “ain’t” the chosen
one to take us to the promised land (Super Bowl), and
needs to be traded.
2) It doesn’t really matter that much who is in the secondary,
if there is virtually no consistent pass rush. A second degree
burn is as painful as a third degree burn.

Grimes is the best corner we have, he is the only DB that actually will make a play on a ball.
Letting Abraham walk will be a mistake. The problem is not with him, but that he is the ONLY guy on our defense that the other team has to account for, the others including Lofton are non-factors.
And the tough part behind all of this, whoever leaves, an adequate replacement is not on the roster thanks TD. Taking your assessments Jeff a little further, say, Biermann, DeCoud, Baker, Snelling, Douglas, Grimes, Jerry all leave or are cut, and factor in Reynolds, Johnson and Hawley should not be starters. Let’s see how many starters TD has drafted.

Grimes is to short and after exploding on the scene last year he really got exposed too many times this year. The guy has reached his peak and since there is no chance he can grow 3 inches you got to let him test the free agent market and if there are no payers then sign him on the cheap.

Grimes is a borderline elite corner. You have to keep him. About the prayer you have of stopping the Saints is by forcing turnover, and Grimes can create turnovers. His height occasionally hurts him, but his freakish athletic ability just about makes up for it.
Abraham’s one of my favorite players, but he’s clearly past his prime. He doesn’t close on QB’s the way he used to. We got 13 sacks combined from our starting defensive end. That’s unacceptable production. Of course, Abe was responsible for most of those, but since Edwards is unfortunately here to stay, we need an every-down speed rusher on the other end. Abe just isn’t that guy anymore.
I think Lofton is a little bit overrated at this point, but he’s still in the upper-half of NFL middle linebackers. I’d bring him back.
McClure needs to be brought back as well. Maintaining continuity is important on the offensive line. Losing Dahl proved that.
DeCoud needs to go. He’s not a difference-maker at his position. Same with Douglas. He’s a decent receiver, but other guys can slide into that No. 3 spot and do just fine.
I think I’d cut bait with Turner. He’s still a good running back but not the elite guy he was in 2008. And anyway, the bell cow running back in the NFL is going of the dinosaur. I think a Snelling-Rodgers combo would be perfectly fine, though bringing in another vet on a one-year deal wouldn’t hurt.

Who cares? The Hawks won the first round a few times… only to get embarrassed every year in the conference semi’s by something resembling a team the Hawks wish they were. Picking between the Hawks and Falcons in the grand scheme of teams in professional sports is like having a “tallest midget” (little people) contest…
Atlanta’s pro teams often resemble world champs in the regular season… but they lack the mental fortitude and become playoff hermits on a yearly basis. Bust any of them in the mouth once and stick a fork in them. Shut up and win already.
Of course, it would be nice to have something resembling a owner that’s worth a d*%# at Turner Field or Phillips Arena!

I like the question ask of Mr. Kraft, owner of the Patriots. Why following the sames rules and only allowed to spend the same amount of money as all the other teams, you end up in the Super Bowl just about every year? He said, “its my people”. Scouting, evaluation, player expectations and of course coaching”…………………… Mike Smith is a lot like Richt in Athens. Solid. Good guy, likable. ….BUT, out of 10 things that make a great coach other than a good one, he has about 7 of the 10 things……………….and like Richt, missing the other 3 things will keep him from the prize.

OK, nobody ask. The 3 things Richt needs to do.
1. Keep staff and players on edge about accountability and expectations. Nobody in Athens is afraid of losing their job.
2. Adapting and implementing change.
3. Recruiting. Richt and staff seem to “peter out” after we get 7 or 8 ” premier elite players”. We need 15 per year. Staff lazy and complacent?
Fix those and he plays for the prize.

Would like to see the Falcons go back to Alabama and get Trent Richardson, but no way they can swing that. Got to get better on both lines. Letting McClure go would make a bad situation a bit worse. The thing I think most commenters are missing is scheme. With addition of new coordinators on the team.Brings on a different philosophy to team scheme.Defensively we have already heard about the hybrid defense.Which I might add the top playoff teams are all using.Under this scheme certain players who may have struggled in the last regime.May flourish under the new scheme.Like PJerry,CLofton,CMathews,DWalls,REdwards,KBiermen,LSidbury etc.I would also say the same for what Koetter will bring to the offense.Having the tools that could make us difficult to defend. But not using these tools and handicapping ourselves sunday to sunday, along with predictability. Was clearly writing Malarky and VanGorder’s resumes out of town. I think the changes we have made alone may be thing .That has the Falcons getting over the hump.

Agree on Lofton. He is priority #1. If you let him get away like Dahl, you will discover he was more valuable than you thought. As for Grimes, place the franshise tag on him. He is undersized and now 29 so I can’t see giving him a long term deal counting against the cap for multiple years. I agree on McClure as well.
As for the rest, it would be nice if Abe could retire a Falcon if he is willing to take a paycut. But I very much think they need Biermann, Douglas and Snelling. Snelling is under 30 and hasn’t taken a lot of hits. On an improved line, he could be very effective as he runs very hard every time he touches the ball. Douglas is an excellent receiver with speed who can create match up nightmares for defenses when you have an OC who is halfway comptetent. Re-sign him and lets see what Koetter can do with all three receivers, or trade Roddy for extra draft picks and move Douglas to #2. And for Biermann, I feel for the guy. He is a stand up pass rushing OLB who was asked to change his skill to match the coach’s philosophy. Now we finally have a DC who will match the scheme and philosophy with the playerr’s skill set. If Nolan does employ a 3-4, it would be great to see Biermann on the outside LB spot making sacks. He plays hard, is fierce and can be a Kevin Greene type if someone learns to use players talents instead of forcing players to adjust their talents to a system in some idiot coach’s head. Imagine a defense with a healthy Edwards on one side, Abe on the other, and Spoon and Biermann as stand up OLB rushing the QB.
Last, on DeCoud. Like the rest on defense, he has not been developed. Give him one more year under a professional NFL DC who may be able to get him to reach his full potential. Then if he still does not pan out, I vote with the others and say let him go.
It’s difficult to make assessments on so many of these players because the coaching staff has not attempted to utilize them to their strengths (see Biermann, Snelling, Douglas, and yes even Robinson). Coaches must adapt to their players, not the other way around. You can’t put square pegs in round holes. But the coaching staff keeps trying. Robinson made a name for himself as a man to man cover guy playing press. But BVG and Smith insisted they play a soft zone..square peg…round hole. I am encouraged. If BVG could have the D in the middle of the pack most of the season and keep them in games, how much more will Nolan be able to do? He actually had NFL experience and is competent. Look for better things next year from this D, perhaps even in the top 7 overall in 2012. Don’t be surprised.

With all this talk about all these players who may be replaced, does anyone really think this team is poised to be a real contender next year? Sounds like a rebuilding year to me, you know, the kind that lays the foundation to the “everybody’s got to have time to get used to the scheme, each other, etc.” I can’t see next year as a real big deal for the Falcons…too many positions to adjust or change.

Re-sign Lofton and Douglas; decline on the rest.
Use the added space and go after Robert Mathis, Michael Griffin, Andre Carter, and/or Terrell Thomas (HUGE DISCOUNT) during Free Agency. I doubt we can afford both Mathis and Griffin together but we can get either with Terrell Thomas. If we can get Andre Carter at a good deal, take him until we can draft a quality DE.

I disagree with this post, you either re-sign & trade Grimes, or let him walk. He’s a heck of a player but if we move to a man to man scheme, which I believe the plan is to do, his play will drop significantly! He’s a zone cb. You let McClure walk, its time to cultivate the O-Line for the next few years, keeping a 35 year old who hasn’t played great to start with around doesn’t make since, especially with a new O-Line coach coming in! You have to keep Lofton, i believe you have to keep Douglass as well. Keep Abe, everyone else can walk & be replaced! Franks can step in for Weems & return kicks, or we can give him a shot at the # 2 cb position, his size makes him an attractive option as a # 2 press cb & his play came along towards the end of the year. Weems is not that good, he was a prow bowler 2 years ago yes, but i saw just as much spark & explosion from Franks in the return game this preseason as i saw from Weems all year! If Koy can be kept cheaply, i keep him as well

McClure is a good field general but struggles against even decent nose tackles. The middle of the falcons line has been a problem for years but was severely exposed when our only decent OG left in free agency (Dahl). IMO, Ryan’s development has been stunted somewhat by the fact that he is always dealing with preasure up the middle (in his face, falling at his legs), and rarely has any room to step up when the ends converge. Compare the protection Drew Brees typically gets in the middle (would love to sign Hicks in free agency but New Orleans will never let that happen). McClure couldn’t move anyone all year in short yardage and the two failed sneaks in New York together with the third-and-one where Todd was litterally knocked onto his butt in the backfield solidified the painful conclusion: We need a new center. Period. McCLure is a good guy but not the answer. Keep him around if you can sign him for nothing but otherwise move on.
PS. I love Spoon but I still wish the Steelers hadn’t taken Pouncy right in front of us in the draft a couple of years ago.

The Falcons have to decide if they want to try to be an elite team or do they want to keep patching the holes and remain average. After never having back to back winning seasons, the Falcons have had four winning seasons in a row. With that kind of track record, the Falcons could make the case for taking a step back, unloading some talent and regroup through the draft.
I think Julio Jones was brought in for a reason. I think Roddy White and Michael Turner have trade value. I think Baker needs to go. I think you have to let Abraham walk, as much as I would hate that. I think you have to build both lines of scrimmage from scratch and find some real talent for the secondary.
Dimitroff and the scouts have really missed in the draft on the lines of scrimmage and may need some consulting help or someone who really knows what they are looking at when watching these guys coming out of college.
The Falcons do not have to go into FULL rebuilding mode, but looking at other teams in our division and the quarterbacks they possess, if we cannot get pressure with our front four, we will never go beyond ONE GAME in the playoffs.

IF MATT RYAN IS SERIOUS ABOUT GOING TO THE NEXT LEVEL THEN HE MUST GET STRONGER PHYSICALLY. PERIOD.
COACH SMITTY ARGUMENT OF RYAN PROGRESSION BASED ON RYAN’S BREAKING JEFF GEORGE RECORD IS PATHETIC……MOST OF RYAN’S THROWS WERE CAUGHT BECAUSE HIS RECEIVERS ADJUSTED THEIR ROUTES TO SOME HORRIBLY THROWN BALLS, ESPECIALLY JULIO JONES AND RODDY.
WE ALL KNOW HOW CEREBRAL RYAN IS AS A QUARTERBACK BUT DEFENSIVE PLAYERS ARE SO FAST, QUICK AND INTELLIGENT IN TODAY’S GAME THAT A QUARTERBACK MUST BE ABLE TO PUT SOME HEAT ON THEIR PASSES….RYAN HAVEN’T DONE THAT CONSISTENTLY.

Clean out the roster? Are you stupid? This is one of the most potent offenses in all of football (7th in points, 10th in total yards, and 8th in passing yards). Our weakness lies in our defense which is only a few pieces from being complete. Our defense allows nearly 237 passing yards per game, 20th in the NFL. This comes from a weak secondary and lousy pass rush.
There are PLENTY of great additions that can be made through Free Agency that won’t break the bank and will address these issues. I’ve already identified quite a few.
Terrell Thomas would be a great addition, with or without Grimes, and the fact that he’s coming off of an injury and will probably be the odd man out in NYG means that he’s probably going to be a bargain. Rashean Mathis, likewise, is coming off an injury and could potentially be another bargain.
Carlos Rogers is another possibility; SF is going to struggle to resign both him and Goldson after their performances this season. He could be the odd man out.
Michael Griffin would be great if we let DeCoud walk. He’s indicated that he’s leaving Tennessee.
Robert Mathis is another possible odd man out in Indianapolis. I’d much rather drop Abraham and shell out more money to get this hometown guy that’s one of the best DE’s in the league. They have room to snag him and I’d make this my top priority. If not, Andre Carter is coming off of a Pro Bowl season and an injury – another potential bargain.

Lofton is not that surefire a tackler. How’d you like his miss on Arian Foster against Houston and his failure to stop Jacobs on 4th and 1 against the Giants? If you think they should pay him $5-6 mil a year, you’re crazy. You can get someone to do the same job for a whole lot less money. I’d rather have Chase Blackburn than Lofton, and he would be a WHOLE lot cheaper.

I can’t see us paying Grimes the same amount of money as Robinson when we don’t even know if his style of play fits in with Nolan’s defense. Lofton is a must keep. Tackling machines at MLB don’t just grow on trees. I read a comment that Lofton can’t run and a comment that Lofton is always making tackles from behind running backs. Which one is it? If he can’t run he can’t tackle a RB from behind. Here’s my breakdown.
Grimes – Let him walk if he demands more than 5 million.
Lofton – Keep him but not if there’s a bidding war. He’s a top five 4-3 MLB.
Abraham – Keep at a nominal rate. I doubt he wants to leave.
Decoud – Resign for depth. He is not a starter at FS.
Douglas – Resign at #3 WR money. If he takes the money and runs to another team….there are FA’s out there that can replace him.
Everyone else must go.

Given McClure’s age I would be very surprised it anyone snapped him up in the open market. Might be an idea to go through the draft first, if say Ben Jones falls to the 3rd he might be a nice pick. If we can’t get a C in the draft then we could go back for Todd at a later date. Slightly gamble in that someone might sigh him up but i’m betting his age and the rep of the o-line last year is enough to put off any suitors.

Robinson is a better corner in bump and run coverage. He prefers the opportunity to be physical.
With Hawley onboard, I’d be surprised if we offer McClure starters money to stay.
One of the things we have to do (even us online GM’s) is project how the FA’s will perform in the new defensive and offensive systems. Can we really trust Grimes to play man coverage 75% of the time given his height? Does Nolan’s 4-3 system require the MLB to drop into coverage much? Does Douglas have enough wiggle to run the WR screens like Welker?

I dont think no one wants Grimes to go but if he does go to another team for more money…so be it but if the Falcons can put together a good pass rush its will a no brainer for the corners…can you dig it?

And out come the “David” bloggers… Man, you haven’t scored two offensive TDs in your last 8 quarters of playoff football. Your special team and defense have scored 5 less points then the “7th most potent” offense… Your deflecting days are over!

AGGRESSIVELY pursue Oline in FA (Nicks would be good), Draft Mike Adams or Cordy Glenn OT in rd2, rd 3 Brandon Boykin, rd 5 would be good spot for another RB to platoon with Quizz and Snelling.

You have to keep Snelling…the guy is a tougher runner, a better receiver, and better blocker than Turner has been, or at least since the Saints game at the beginning of 2010.
I would give Biermann another shot. He had a down season, but he is only 26…very fast and athletic and scored higher on the wonderlic than Ryan.

My thoughts? Keep all the young guys who still have upside (Lofton, Weems, Grimes, Snelling,DeCoud, Douglas, Beirman) and let go of the older guys who are on backside of their careers (Abe, Turner, Olvie, Peterson, McClure). We’ve all new coordinators coming in so we might as well build to last.

I have to say something. you have Biermann as an “I don’t care if we sign him or not” player, but I have to disagree whole-heartedly here. Biermann is one of the best special teams players in the NFL, and he had his Defensive snaps reduced this past year because of that (and the arrival of a certain underachieving aspiring underwear model at his Defensive position). Using a “multiplicity” of formations Defensively, can you imagine this guy as a 3-4 OLB along w Sidbury? I certainly can. His versatility alone is very valuable, plus he could be a real impact player in Nolan’s Defense. Biermann is a keeper, especially because he won’t command a huge salary. I think letting him go would be a big mistake. We need all the help we can get rushing the passer and covering punts and kicks. I’m starting the campaign- Keep Biermann!!!

ok Harry can be a #3 and return kicks he did it before he was hurt so cut weems
Should have been cut Redman when he is in he does nothing
Turner plays when he wants too if he not running into teammates he trying to dance he too big for that
Grimes is our best CB but he is short keep him but get a good 3rd CB
I agree Bierman did as much or more than Edwards in less playing time
Snelling and Rogers them the 2
without Abraham then who going to rush passer at least when he is on field other teams pay him attention and it should free up Edwards
Decoud cant catch and he misses tackles at the wrong time
McClure is the best OL keep him at least 1-2 more years is the others who are the problem
Lofton is a keeper instead of blaming him work on his 3rd down abilities
but more important the starters are clearly capable but we need more key parts
I didnt like VanGorder at UGA and didnt think he deserved the job and as for the O blame the coordinator remember what he said after the Green Bay game when we was winning “I changed my play calling cuz i thought they would figure it out” you do it til they figure it out and I know what plays he calling and I dont understand it

NO to Grimes – he’s a zone CB, a liability in this league against 6′2″+ WRs and TEs. Too small and gets manhandled.
NO to Decoud – still lost in a defense he’s played in three years straight. Too small and gets manhandled.
Lofton is a good run stopper, but is another liability in the passing game. Unless he can lose weight and increase his coverage ability he is at best a role player. He’s expendible.
Turner is constantly running in place and doesn’t have the footwork or presence of mind to break to the outside when the middle is clogged. He’s expendible.
The bottomline is this team needs to get bigger and stronger on both sides of the ball (OL & DL). We need to get rid of these H.S. built players in our secondary and bring in some 5′11″ or taller CBs with muscle and not might mouse.
I’m tired of seeing the Falcons get run over and manhandled by the bigger teams. This mindset of smaller, quicker players is just not going to work. It’s time to get some big boys on this team with the mindset of wrecking havoc on our opponents. These current players with the exception of one or two are just SOFT, SOFT, SOFT!

That said, i don’t know if Smitty and crew get the meaning of “Biggest, Fastest is the way to go??????????? “Sign center Todd McClure: He’s wearing down and turns 35 in two weeks. But he can still play and the team doesn’t have a replacement, so it’s better to build around him next season. The offensive line is the biggest issue on the team but that’s not because of McClure.”
Why? Why re-sign an average center who can “still play”? We need to UPGRADE! Pardon me, but yours is the kind of attitude that has the team stuck where it is. You were also way too kind toward Dunte. Why on earth would we continue with him? Mediocrity City. Arthur, are you listening? we have to MOVE UP!!!

We have new coaches with new schemes on both sides, we have good core players, we have overpaid older players, we have some that we see as poor inconsistant players all based on the past.Who the coaches choose to keep and bring in as F/A will determine if we can win a playoff game or get 1 yard when needed MOST FANS CANT SEE THE BIG PICTURE FOR ALL THEY SEE IS TREES, SO WHICH ONES DO YOU CUT AND WHICH ONES DO YOU LET GROW

Me? I’d sign Snelling, let Turner go. He’s gotten slower every year, and they keep trying to get him outside..BUT the new OC might have a better use in mind. I still think I’d have to go with Snelling….he

We need to rebuild the OL, probably through free agency so it’ll be quicker…

Heard Marcus McNiel is gonna get cut by the Chargers, I played middle school ball with & played against him while he was at Cedar Grove in Atl, it would be good to see him come home in a Falcons Uni & help us Solidify our O-Line. LT Marcus McNeill is expected to be waived before March 13, the date his $10 million salary for 2012 would become guaranteed, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. He’s 28 & has been to two prow bowl’s, i say its a no brainer, he’s coming off of IR, but the way our O-Line played, its worth the risk! espcially with no # 1 pick

Someone please explain to me why we are focusing on Lofton’s pass coverage ability…particularly in the soft zone we played under Van Gorder. I’ll say this again, the defensive roster has to be evaluated based on how they project in Mike Nolan’s system.

Project Nolan’s system? Has the past not been completely indicative of that?
If he institutes some 3-4 schemes, wow. Lofton, Weatherspoon, Nicholas, and a maturing Akeem Dent? Just wow. The potential. Maybe we keep Peterson? Even better.
We absolutely need Robert Mathis. Mathis, Edwards, and Babineaux would be quite the line. People critical of Ray Edwards point to his success at the ability of Jared Allen to command additional coverage, don’t you think Mathis would do the same? I do.
Resigning Lofton and adding Robert Mathis would make this a top 10 defense, EASILY.

Pete,
Given that Nolan has gone on record that we’ll keep the 4-3 defensive scheme, I’m not sure Mathis is a good fit for us. I do however think that Ray Edwards will be more productive under Nolan.
Abraham presents the most difficult decision. I’m not sure that he leaves at this point in his career. We just have to be careful with the salary.
As far as Grimes is concerned, given that Dunta is a lock to start, is the difference between Franks and Grimes worth 6 million dollars a year for the next 3 years?
For the Bierman fans, does Bierman have more value than Matthews, Sidbury, and the draft pick (hopefully Chandler Jones)?

Why wouldn’t Mathis fit? He’s performed exceptionally well in both a 3-4 and 4-3. His price tag won’t be much more than what we are already paying Abraham.

MR.SCHULTZ
THE FALCONS CAN NOT RESIGN MCCLURE OR LOFTON. THE ONLY ONE OUT THREE I WOULD RESIGN IS BRENT GRIMES.
LOFTON
THE FALCONS WILL BE A FOOL TO OVERPAY FOR A TWO DOWN LINEBACKER MR.SCHULTZ WHO CAN”T COVER, CAN’T RUN, CAN’T MOVE SIDE TO SIDE, OR MAKE GAME CHANGING PLAYS.
MCCLURE
MCCLURE IS PAST HIS PRIME AND TO ME HAS NEVER BEEN THAT GOOD AND HE IS UNDERSIZED AND LIMITED WITH HIS SPEED AND QUICKNESS. HE HAS ALWAYS HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE ELITE AND BEST DEFENSIVE TACKLES IN THE NFL.
GRIMES
HE IS A GOOD PLAYER AND THE ONLY REASON I WOULD’NT RESIGN HIM IS THE FALCONS FIND A CORNER WHO IS BIGGER, STRONGER, AND A BETTER PLAYER.

“Must be in SF or maybe LA, who cares”
No, I’m in Ixtapa, Mexico on vacation… You must care, I had just posted at 2:35. You are a tool (and not a sharp one)… Gwinnett? You are good for a laugh… Don’t let the 4 years of Rich McKay having taken the Gwinnett/DeKalb Falcons off the table get in the way of some blog logic… Enjoy the cold!

Really? Really? Let Abe Go? Is that something else motivating such a assinine statement? Then who will apply pressure on Defense? Teams game plan for Abe, and if he had any help he would probably have a 20+ sack year. Grimes is a winner, a certain blue chipper, A potential Proven All-Star. The problem is that great hope of a QB who CANNOT Win a big game and chokes at the presence of pressure. Top notch recievers with nobody to get them the ball. The world knows who can’t throw the 20-30 yarder down field with any accuracy. Who is indecisive, and lacks any heart to stand in the pocket and take a hit while delivering the ball on big downs. It’s not Turner, not Abe, not Grimes, Nicholas or any name you would like to throw out. We all know who and where the problem is. If we could score points the defense could do thier part. I will bet the players know who hurts the team????????
