NEW ORLEANS — The Falcons need to fire everybody. (Not really. But I’ve felt left out in the last 24 hours of venting since I’m covering the BCS title game. I promise to weigh in on the Falcons later this week, which still will be long before the flames on Arthur Blank’s head are extinguished.)
Now, back to the BCS. It’s LSU vs. Alabama. Please, no more whining. It SHOULD be LSU vs. Alabama. These aren’t just the two best teams in the SEC, they’re the two best teams in the country.
I’ve heard and read complaints from fans and media in every time zone. Some say this match-up completely devalues the regular season and makes LSU’s win in Tuscaloosa back in November meaningless. OK. That’s a a legitimate argument.
Some say that two teams from the same conference shouldn’t be allowed into the title game. I get that viewpoint.
Some say only conference champions should be eligible for the BCS title game. Perfectly understandable.
Here’s the problem: The rules don’t stipulate any of that. If the BCS or conference presidents or college presidents or whomever it is that actually set up this stupid system wants to tweak the set-up and attach those rules, 
that’s fine. Then we won’t have this problem.
But those rules aren’t in place and this is what you get — which are still the two best teams with the two best defenses. There’s no doubt about it in my mind. I covered that game in November and left Bryant-Denny Stadium still believing they were the two best (in fact, even after LSU won 9-6 in overtime, part of me still thought Alabama, after missing four goals, was the better team).

poll — which is not a part of the BCS’s formula – are leaving the door open to voting LSU No. 1 even if Alabama wins, based on the Tigers’ win in the last meeting and going through their regular season schedule unbeaten.
Sorry, but that’s just stupid. Apply that logic to any other sport. So, if Denver Broncos win the Super Bowl, do you vote the Green Bay Packers champions, just because all evidence says they’re a better team. This is a playoff game. What happened before wasn’t a playoff game. It shouldn’t matter if the the loser of tonight’s game has 450 yards in offense and lost 7-6 on a 99-yard fumble return with 12 seconds left. Tonight’s winner should be recognized as the champion.
Now, about my outlook: I have no idea. You know that cliche that goes, “If they played 100 times, they’d each win 50″? It applies here. But just because “black” should come up half the time on a roulette wheel doesn’t mean “red” doesn’t hit 12 times in a row. (I speak from experience. But we really don’t need to go any further.)
I don’t expect another 9-6 game (and neither do the coaches). I do expect expect another close, low-scoring game. I find it hard to believe LSU coach Les Miles – who went vanilla in the last meeting — will be able to go four quarters again without so much as one trick play. In championship games, it’s expected that you play and coach aggressively so my guess is Miles does something, and the biggest question is whether it works or backfires.
It’s hard not to be impressed with the toughness and resilience of both teams. LSU went 13-0, won five road games (plus “neutral” site wins over Oregon in Dallas and over Georgia in the SEC championship at the Georgia Dome), has beaten eight ranked teams and has overcome some off-field issues, including offensive coordinator Steve Kragthorpe stepping down in August after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. (He remained on Miles’ staff as quarterbacks’ coach.)
Alabama wasn’t really tested after the LSU game (wins over Mississippi State, Georgia Southern, Auburn). But the Tide is one overtime field goal away from being unbeaten and comes in with that knowledge that it could’ve one that game if their kicker didn’t miss four field goal attempts. I’m sure coach Nick Saban has used that as motivation.
That’s enough for now. I’ll check back here as we get closer to game time. Straw poll: LSU or Alabama?

kral WHO really cares about a BCS Champ? We know it is flawed. It is pretty to advertise it but it is just OK. The Championship that should matter is the Conference IMO. The bowls never got it right and the BCS does better. The Playoff for DIV 1 I think will have the SEC and Big 10 winning the most because of SIZE. I fear too many players will be injured stopping NFL careers or most kids will leave after 3 yr to avoid injury. If a season goes to 16 or so games the CRIES will become SCREAMS to play football players and that just can’t happen because of Title IX. If players start getting paid you will see Only Football, Baseball, Softball, Men & Womens Basketball and Gymnastics will be left because of having to pay men and Women. Many sports will not have scholarships if Pay happens. My Opinion on how it will unfold IF a Football Playoff happens.

Watching these two play is like watching a soccer game. One thing about it the SEC teams play some of the most boring brand of football there is. BTW, something occurred to me a few minutes ago. Usually in a national title game of this type there is either one or two outstanding, extremely talented QBs. This game doesn’t have any. Maybe that’s why it’s reminding me of a soccer game.

This game really represents a low point for college football. Even though I like watching the college game, I am boycotting this game as well as the last 8 or so BCS bogus championships. The last true championship game was USC and Texas. This game is such a farce. Alabama beat almost no one of note this year. They played a joke of a schedule and had trouble with Georgia Southern. Oklahoma State, Stanford or Boise or even Houston should be here. I look at the 9-0 score and have to laugh. I’m guessing most people watching have fallen asleep. So what if Alabama wins. LSU played the much tougher schedule and beat Alabama already. This game means nothing. It’s a true atrocity. Wake me up when we have a playoff.

Alabama could win this game 50-0 and I’d still consider LSU the better team. Their schedule was 100 times tougher than Alabama’s. Alabama beat 2 teams in the top 25 all year, one of which was Penn State. Their out of conference schedule was North Texas, Kent State and GA Southern. What a joke. Alabama is a disgrace. I guess play a bunch of creampuffs every year and still get to the BCS game because of the pro SEC biases of all the media voting in the polls. LSU had the far better season. Alabama could win this game 50-0 and I’d still consider LSU the better team. Their schedule was 100 times tougher than Alabama’s. Alabama beat 2 teams in the top 25 all year, one of which was Penn State. Their out of conference schedule was North Texas, Kent State and GA Southern. What a joke. Alabama is a disgrace. I guess play a bunch of creampuffs every year and still get to the BCS game because of the pro SEC biases of all the media voting in the polls. LSU had the far better season. And that was the main reason Dodd pulled Tech out of the SEC; he would NOT do that take away a kid’s scholarship. This is without a doubt the best, most interesting NC game I have ever seen in my life. What a game! I love this! I’m so glad we don’t have a playoff. Congrats to Alabama, a game well played!!!!! However, they shouldn’t have even been in the game. Yes, they won the game, but they didn’t deserve the invitation. Last year Auburn won, and we may never know the truth of the whole Cam Newton thing. And this year, well, a team that didn’t win its division was invited to a game it didn’t deserve to be playing in. Had the score been 249 to 3, that fact would not change. CFB has to go to a playoff where only conference champs are invited, otherwise all national titles will be, as this one, political. I did not watch the game, I’m sure Bama played well. There may be a trophy and a title awarded to the winner, Alabama, but the loser is the fans of what used to be a great game, the fans of college football.

Appreciate your opinion ChattaDawg, but, it is just your opinion. Many will share your opinion and many will share mine. CFB has hurt itself with this game . . . I know many true fans of the game who didn’t watch tonight and who feel like I do. Alabama got a break no other team would get because of money and influence. Oklahoma State should’ve been in the game, even if they had lost by a hundred. We’ll just have to agree to disagree. In my opinion, and it is shared by many, Alabama is not the National Champion of College Football this year.

ChattaDAwg, Id’ love to see four to eight conference where conference winners only were invited. If, as in the case of bama, you lose at home during the season and don’t get in so be it, home games should matter, as should all regular season games, especially conference games. The SEC would likely still own football, but, if only conference champs got it it would make the conference championships a great first round of a playoff system. Anyway, as I said, I appreciate your opinion(s), mine is just different on Bama this year. Can’t take away from their performance tonight but many who think like me didn’t even bother to watch the game, and that can’t be good for CFB.

What play 10 regular season games and 5 playoff games?
Can’t play 12 games + a Championship game and Playoffs too.
It is about EDUCATION not football. the season would be too lang and a major risk for injury. The Largest and deepest teams would ALWAYS win in a longer season. The NCAA cant have a 16 game season. WHO really cares about a BCS Champ? We know it is flawed. It is pretty to advertise it but it is just OK. The Championship that should matter is the Conference IMO. The bowls never got it right and the BCS does better. The Playoff for DIV 1 I think will have the SEC and Big 10 winning the most because of SIZE. I fear too many players will be injured stopping NFL careers or most kids will leave after 3 yr to avoid injury. If a season goes to 16 or so games the CRIES will become SCREAMS to play football players and that just can’t happen because of Title IX. If players start getting paid you will see Only Football, Baseball, Softball, Men & Womens Basketball and Gymnastics will be left because of having to pay men and Women. Many sports will not have scholarships if Pay happens. My Opinion on how it will unfold IF a Football Playoff happens.

smartdawg, with all due respect, and I mean this respectfully, I think you are wrong. Bama could have won by two hundred and it will never change the fact that they lost at home, did not make the conference championship game, and would not have gotten in the game were it not for money, influence, and espn. This is a corrupt system and beyond Bama, perhaps only one or two teams (USC, maybe TEXAS) could’ve gotten the redo that Bama got tonight. As with ChattaDAWG, we’ll just have to agree to disagree. I’m sure many agree with you, and many with me. Just the fact that fans like me didn’t even bother to watch a NC game (for the first time in at least twenty years, should say something about this game tonight.

smartdawg, I’m not questioning Bama’s performance tonight, I’m questioning whether they deserved the inivitation to play in this game. Many teams get hot late in the year, as did Bama. But, in my opinion, they did not deserve to be at this dance. Good discussion though. If you are a Bama fan enjoy the win!

5150, I understand your concerns about season length but Div II does it, and, if having a playoff means shortening the season I’m for it. Let’s go to eight or ten games, each conference names a champ and all champs get a ticket to the dance. Teams like Bama, who lose at home (for whatever reason or excuse) miss the playoffs. Every game matters. The whole season becomes a playoff. And, most importantly, every school gets a fair chance. As I’ve said in other posts, only Bama or USC or perhaps TExas gets the dance card Bama got tonight. I did not watch game but Bama must’ve played well. That doesn’t matter. They took someone else’s dance card and until the politics are removed from football the integrity of the game cannot be restored. I do appreciate however your concerns about academics.

That’s debatable smartdawg, I’d say Ok. STate did as they won their conference. If I were Auburn I’d be really upset because they can go 13-0 and win the conference and not get invited while Bama doesn’t even win its division and they get their ticket punched? My point is that a playoff where only conference champs got in would elimate all the politics. It would be like baseball used to be. There were many good, hot teams, that didn’t make the playoffs. There were no wild cards. And I really believe OK. ST. deserved a dance card more than Bama did. Sorry to disagree, but, I’m not alone on this one . . . I just might be the only one on this blog brave enough to state my opinion.

One more thought, Florida STate, when they were still good, probably didn’t deserve all the invitations they got BUT they at least won their conference. Bama might’ve been better than OK ST. We will never know. But Bama should’ve been eliminated when they didn’t even win their division. Stuff happens, and there should not be wild cards. I rather see a champ from a weaker conference get a bid than see a team get a mulligan because of who they are and the influence they pedal. All that said, Bama must’ve played great tonight, I’m not questioning that, I am questioning the integrity of their invitation to this game. This system is corrupt. At any rate, appreciate all the opinions. I’ll leave it with yall . . .

CFB, I can’t argue about the BCS crap. However, that’s the world we live in. Under the current rules, Bama was still the team deserving of the opportunity to play for the NC. They dominated tonight, they piteched a shutout. If Bama had played Boise, etal, each of those FG’s might have been TD’s.

No doubt, Alabama might not have “deserved” to be in the national championship game, but they, after all, were the best team. Can you imagine Ok. St. or Stanford or anyone else, for that matter, going up against that defense?!
It wouldn’t have been pretty. The SEC team (LSU or Alabama) would have destroyed whomever they played. RTR!

I’m not taking anything away from the Bama defense, but the way LSU played tonight, pretty much any really good team could have stood a chance of beating them.
