LSU-Alabama BCS title game is another win for SEC

NEW ORLEANS – If it is true, as Socrates once said, that, “Envy is the ulcer of the soul,” every other college football conference in America has been speed-eating Tums for the past six years.

LSU and Alabama play in the BCS championship game on Monday night in the Superdome. But this is sort of like two gladiators battling for the right to be viewed as the favorite son of the emperor. The emperor already has won.

This will make six consecutive BCS titles won by SEC schools. It will make eight championships in the 13 years the game has been played, far exceeding the closest member of the lower class (the Big 12 with two).

One would have to go back to the early 1900s of Ivy League domination to find a conference with such a run. But to wax on about the greatness of Princeton, Yale and Harvard football is sort of like referencing the Tyrannosaurus rex ruling over the animal kingdom. Ivy League football didn’t have a lot of competition back then, unless you count Ivy League crew.

The SEC is 7-0 in championship games. So the irony is it will take two conference schools playing each other for the first time for it to suffer its first loss. The SEC has redefined the blueprint for world domination.

When asked Sunday if he foresaw anything that could derail this train, LSU coach Les Miles said, “Not at this point.”

Feel free to add the words, “… in this decade” or “… in this century,” depending on your perspective.

The SEC 2011 media guide cover will be updated for next season.

This is what the 2011 SEC media guide cover looked like. It will need to be updated for next season.

SEC commissioner Mike Slive knew the passion and culture of college football that existed in his conference. He recognizes the SEC’s mega-millions television contracts have enabled athletic departments to lure the best coaches and build Taj Majal-like practice facilities. The obvious ripple effects: better recruits and more wins.

But even he admits this streak was unfathomable. It’s stupid-great. It’s Joe DiMaggio’s 56-game hitting streak, UCLA’s 88 straight wins in men’s basketball and Edwin Moses’ 122 straight hurdles wins great. The six straight titles will have been won by four schools (LSU, Alabama, Florida, Auburn) but that doesn’t diminish the run’s significance.

“It’s one of those records that I think will never be broken,” he said. “I’m an optimist by nature, but I don’t think anybody can have expectations of this. I remember a few years ago thinking, ‘Wow. We won two straight.’”

Slive’s reading list last summer included an appropriate book: “”56: Joe DiMaggio and the Last Magic Number in Sports.”

“That’s when I realized this is a record that in many ways is as phenomenal as DiMaggio’s record, and just hard to imagine in the future,” he said.

Then again: “We could break our own record.”

LSU has a good chance to be a preseason No. 1 next season. Alabama won’t be far behind.

Clearly money is a huge factor, but as Slive points out, “We’re not unique in our ability to develop significant revenue. At least one other conference has been able to do that.”

Slive didn’t come out and reference the Big Ten by name. It’s not polite.

Alabama defensive coordinator and former Georgia safety and Kirby Smart also referenced the conference’s high profile coaches, but said the reason for the conference’s success goes beyond that. “Regionally, high school football, in my opinion, is so great in the SEC states,” he said. “My dad’s a high school coach, and I’ve always believed that. …  Everybody talks about the [defensive] line, but there are other skilled players. In the South, if you’re a really good athlete, you may play cornerback.  That’s not necessarily true everywhere else — they’re [wide receivers].”

Since the AP poll started in 1936, the previous conference title streak of three was held by the SEC (1978-80) and the Big Ten (1940-42). That has been obliterated. The titles have elevated the conference in the eyes of the nation’s top recruits.

Recalling his days as a high school recruit, Alabama linebacker Courtney Upshaw said his top three signing choices all were recent national champions from the SEC.

“I just felt like my main thing was to get to an SEC school if I wanted to be remembered,” he said. “You know what I’m saying?”

Upshaw is playing in his second BCS title game in three years. Safe to conclude he chose well.

Haven’t seen anything from the bowl games that will stop the SEC train. As long as the coaching staffs in other conferences continue to field defenses that would embarrass the French Army, the trend will continue.

1. Four different SEC teams have won the last six BCS championships.

2. UGA was not one of those teams.

Gtbob I kinda agree with you. Most who I have talked to also aren’t very excited. I do think they are the 2 best teams but I also thought the falcons could score at least one TD today. They need at least a 4 team playoff. Anything could happen with that. Would have loved to see luck and stanford play lsu or bama first game. Ya never know. Now we are stuck with a rematch and the way college football is set up with no playoff you should never have rematches in a champ game unless they are from different conferences. Get a playoff and I am fine with it.

@Gaupper

There is no doubt there is extensive excitement in the SouthEast about the game, but I have to agree with GT about the general overall interest in the game. On a national level, I’m betting the TV rating will be dismal.

I’m a Clemson fan, and I can admit that the SEC has been the strongest conference in recent history, but I am fundamentally against giving a team a chance at a national championship that didn’t win their conference let alone their division. I really think Boise should have been given a shot. They beat a SEC division champ and only lost one game due to a missed field goal. This game really taints the 6 game streak when no other conference is even given an opportunity..

Stinger2-The SEC is the only conference EVER to put 2 teams in the BCS national championship game. The SEC is 15-7 in BCS bowls while the ACC is 2-13. The ACC is irrelevant football wise, and is going downhill in basketball. The SEC will get as many NCAA bids as the ACC this season, maybe more. Welcome to collegiate athletic irrelevancy.

J Bo

January 8th, 2012
6:43 pm

It’s a given that the SEC wins either way in this game. The only way they would have come out better, at the tune of about 18m, would be if Georgia had beat LSU, and LSU was still matched against Alabama for the National Championship. I still think that when Alabama beats LSU because they will be 1-1 niether will be champion over the other.

Much has been said on how people would fix the BCS so I want to add my two cents worth.

1. Start by setting a 12 team limit for each conf.
2. Split all conf. and play a championship game
3. Teams are ranked according to how they finished going into the next season and rankings change as they play games
4. Add a plus 1 game
5. The 4 BCS games are played by the top 8 ranked teams
(a)1 vs 3 (b)2 vs 4 (c)5 vs 7 (d)6 vs 8
6. The winners of 1 vs 3, & 2 vs 4 play for the national championship.
7. The rest of the bowls are matched with Conf Champions and Conf
Runner ups.

If this system was in place this year the matchups would be LSU/OK ST, Alabama/Standford, Oregon/Bosie ST, and AR/KS St.

It pains me to say it but after what LSU did to Georgia; ROLL TIDE!!!

LSU-BAMA game tells me the BCS system is a fair system which is not swayed by lots of opinionated opposition to LSU-BAMA rematch.

The coaches and voters believe LSU-BAMA are the two best teams, and voted that way despite strong anti-rematch sentiment by other conferences’ fans.

If Stanford or Okie State is in this game, it would be an automatic win for LSU, and as a result LSU wouldn’t earn their title. BAMA as the 2nd best will make sure LSU honestly earn their title if LSU wins, not given to them as a status quo.

The SEC has pretty much dominated the competition this bowl season. Even when the opposing teams are able to match our athletes, they never quite match the toughness which comes from SEC play. I would like to see Alabama or LSU go against wide open offenses like are in conferences west of them. I mean, Alabama gave up more points/yards to a team NOT IN THE SEC than they basically did to the rest of their schedule.

Here’s the kicker, that team was not even and FBS team, but an FCS team…

Just sayin’, it is a crime that they put bama in the Championship game because they played LSU the closest….. there were other teams that outplayed LSU, but just lost the turnover battles, part of the game, but again – just sayin.

The Alabama Crimson Tide’s 2012 recruiting class was one of the nation’s best heading into Thursday night but the addition of two of the country’s top high school prospects may have sealed the deal for Alabama to land the top recruiting class in the nation for 2012.

With the commitments of athlete Cyrus Jones and safety Landon Collins during Thursday night’s Under Armour All-American Game, Alabama moved to the No. 1 spot in the team recruiting rankings for three major recruiting services – Rivals, ESPN, and 247Sports. With the Tide’s top competition in the rankings, Texas and Florida State, largely finished with recruiting, the Tide’s spot atop the rankings seems relatively secure.

The commitment of five-star Collins was particularly key to moving the Tide ahead of Texas and Florida State. BamaOnline’s Tim Watts called Collins’ commitment the biggest recruiting victory of the Nick Saban era at Alabama.

Be thankful your team lost to Iowa State and spared itself the beatdown.

Tomorrow night will be big boy football with plenty of future NFL stars on both defenses, not the flag football you’ve been watching in the Big 12.

GTBob: They held the #73 offense in the country to 9 points. I’m really impressed

Bob maybe you don’t know that much about football, but when LSU played Oregon (first game of their season), Oregon was ranked #1 and had the #1 Offense in the country. LSU beat them 40-20. They also beat another high powe offensive team, West Va.; and then another one, Arkansas, and they beat them by outscoring them and keeping them from scoring, (that’s called offense and defense).

So you may sneer at LSU 9 points when they played Alabama, but it just proves that you don’t know what the heck you’re talking about.

Count me among those who are not very interested in seeing these two teams play again, I bought in to the hype for the first game and it was the most boring game I can remember watching in the last few years. In the third quarter my son looked at me and said “I thought this game was supposed to be great, this is crap.” I told him then that both teams were just playing not to lose, instead of playing to win and that was why it sucked. Wait for the fourth quarter, said I, and maybe they’ll start to open it up; they never did and it was a joke.
I believe we’ll see the exact same game this time, both teams scared to open up the playbook and content to kick field goals and trade punts (out of bounds when Bama kicks) until we have all gone past caring because we’re watching such a snoozefest. They didn’t want to lose a shot at the Natl Championship game then, and they won’t want to lose the Natl Championship game now.
If it had been LSU – Ok St, I promise you it would be a more entertaining game and more people would watch. The BCS is broken and this matchup should be the straw that breaks the camels back.

They were preseason #1; but you’re right, when they played LSU they were #3. Great save though — you totally refused to answer to the validity of my total post, and jumped on the Oregon rankings. You missed (ha, ha) the point about OU being an offensive powerhouse and ws still beaten by LSU, but you sure picked up on the #1 — I guess you GTers aren’t as dumb as you look. Just not very athletic.

With the first week of the college football season now behind us, the Oregon Ducks have dropped ten full spots from the No. 3 team in the nation to the No. 13 team in the nation.

That is part of it, but really what benefit would there be for GT to go to the SEC? I really can’t think of one. I think that is why the SEC couldn’t get any ACC teams when they were trying to find a 14th team. They had to settle with Missouri.

They couldn’t get a 14th team from the ACC mainly because the ACC didn’t want to get beaten up every weekend. FSU may make a comeback — I really don’t see either them or Miami being down for long; and VT should consider a better OC if they want to stay in the chase.

As for benefit, try garnering your team MILLIONS in TV deals and bowl appearances. The only benefit for the SEC to grab an ACC team would be for the SEC to grab Duke; and that’s because Duke is a basketball powerhouse and also makes their conference MILLIONS in TV deals and Sweet 16 appearances.

Preston & Alphare, they had their chance and lost, so why do they get a rematch? If the BCS had a playoff format and this was the end result, I wouldn’t mind as much and would have also watched the games that put them in the rematch as well as the rematch with interest. This way has left me pretty indifferent about the game. I’m a football fan and when this was announced, it was the last thing I wanted to see. I’ve watched almost all the bowl games and seen a lot of great ones and a lot of teams really jacked up and playing outstanding ball, this includes Ok St, whose heart and talent could be a challenge for LSU and finished .009% in the final BCS rankings behind Bama. Both Ok St and LSU play hard, high scoring football on offense and special teams and would be a fun matchup for the country to watch, way better than the most boring game of the last ten years being replayed.

BTW – as sad side result of watching all these games has been seeing which teams think they are better than the other team, so they sit on the ball with a lead and hand the trophy away because the thought was only true while they tried hard. Both teams losses were from coaching, and that is what makes it rough being a fan of Tech or Ga right now.

What’s funny is the idiots who cry about a rematch usually support a play-off system, which inherently means more rematches than would ever happen in the BCS system. Play-offs would also include wild-card teams which didn’t win their conference. Any system should have the objective of matching the two best teams period, otherwise it’s a flawed system. SecFan,

It’s a real paradox. Everybody wants a playoff because of the unfairness they perceive in the current system. Yet, almost all of the current playoff systems allow teams in that really don’t deserve to be in. I’m talking about wildcard teams and teams in lousy divisions who may win with a weak or even losing record (as did Seattle). Baseball used to have a pure system where only the two best teams, one from each league got to play and then they opened it up with expansion. One of the best (worst?) examples of what is wrong with a diluted playoff system is when a team like the NY Giants of a few years ago got in as a wildcard and ended up beating the only 19 game winner in NFL history, New England. It’s great that they won it on the field in the playoffs but by any reasonable standard, they didn’t deserve to be there in the first place. As I recall, they had lost to the Patriots at the end of the season. Talk about unfair rematches.

Stephen A.Dawg: NO BCS YET for UGA

January 9th, 2012
1:28 am

Tennessee won their BCS title in 1998-99. Since then LSU and Florida have won two BCS titles each and Alabama and Auburn have one BCS title each. Georgia has nothing but BCS futility while its head coach claims it is scratching on the door of “greatness.” Many say its a door of mediocrity. Forget about it. Florida went 6-6 this past season, but it’s a proud 6-6 with losses to ‘Bama and LSU. UF can sell recruits it played a tough schedule, while UGA with its lame scheduling can only hope to keep avoiding ‘Bama, LSU and Arkansas in order to salvage Richt’s job. Tell you what, the recruits are really watching UGA’s offense closely. I predict no big time running back out there will be interested in coming to Georgia if the same things on the field happen that happened to Crowell and Samuels happens to Keith Marshall in 2012. From the looks of it Marshall’s frame at 5′-11″,190 lbs, is slightly smaller than Crowell at 5-11, 215 lbs. From the looks of it Marshall is a speed back and he has to avoid as many collisions as possible to stay healthy and effective. If Bobo decides to send Marshall repeatedly up the middle as he has with 5-6, 165 lb, Carlton Thomas it’s only a matter of time before Marshall gets hurt as Crowell, Samuels, and Thomas did behind UGA’s patchwork offensive line. This is why it is very important to have a good OC that can assemble a good O-line and try to preserve the health of his RBs with sensible playcalling. But Richt/Bobo are not the coaches you want to play for anyway if you are a RB aspiring to reach the next level to go pro. As a Dawg the truth hurts, but Davis would be better off at So.Carolina and Gurley would be better off at UNC than to come to UGA only to watch Richt play his favorite at RB until he gets hurt or flunks out or gets kicked out the program. No decent RB in his right mind should want to take the physical beating Crowell took behind a poorly coached offensive line orchestrated by the Richt/Bobo mindtrust. It is absurd for Richt to have Bobo keep running tiny Carlton Thomas up the middle giving up on offense and keeping CTG’s tired defense on the field to win a game the offense has clearly given away. Once we are rid of the incompetency and 90s FSU pass-first mindset, Georgia can find a good HC who will find the right kind of OC go back to its roots and become Tailback U again before it’s too late. You have to be able run the ball to win in the SEC or defeat top ten teams and everybody knows Richt can’t put together and execute a reliable running game at UGA.

Stephen A.Dawg: NO BCS YET for UGA ?

January 9th, 2012

I predict ther will be a split BCS national title as ‘Bama will avenge its loss at home to LSU. The Tide is ready for both Tiger QBs this time. The Tiger defense is ready for the Tides’ run game, but it will wear down if the Tide defense shuts the LSU offense down or LSU turns the ballover. A Tide win is a victory for the BCS which says it thrives on controversy. If ‘Bama wins the title should split if it’s a close game. LSU will still have the most to brag about since it holds the SEC Crown and a share of the BCS title, whereas the Tide would have just a share of the BCS title alone. Either way the SEC office and BCS wins in the end.

GT Bob, is just hoping for Techs. sake that they put together a NCAA supported cross words puzzle league. Then maybe tech. could compete in the ACC in something with more frequency than once every 50 years. If not crosswords at least a scrabble league.
In football, I think they would be better off as a FCS team. Then they could beat most of the teams in Georgia except UGA and Georgia Southern. Better worry about Kenn. though since they are on the rise and have already beaten Tech. in Basketball once in the last few years. They should be able to beaten Shorter University in Rome though, since they have only played for a couple of years.
The bad part though, is they would probably have to drop UGA, and lose their only source of revenue from football, since once every two years, they play at the big boy school, and get their hind end parts handed to them. They can’t get enough people even in that game to fill a stadium, when it is played at home.

LSU is the 2011 National Champion they have already beaten Alabama on their home field. This game is a farce all it does is give LSU a chance to loose what they have already earned. I would have liked to have seen LSU play anyone in the top 5 that they had not played during the regular season for the NC. That goes for any teams or confrences that end up in this situation in the future. Its just as stupid as the Florida vs Florida State NC game a few several years ago.

Actually what the tennis player, and not a good one at that in Greg McGarity, said was that Mark Richt could “go tell all the 2012 recruits that he was going to be here at least until they graduated in 4 years.”

That could mean anything, as obviously the 125 top prospects in-state have seen it. It could even mean, no I am not giving you a contract extension now, and in fact he said that precisely that it would be a contract extension out to a total of 4 years at least and that it wouldn’t happen until on or about signing date.

Under the old AP poll, LSU would already be declared National Champion.
OSU was declared national champion by AP back in the forties, before a

UGA in a Rose Bowl appearance. UGA went on and beat UCLA in the Rose Bowland was awarded
the NC by the Harris poll, which waited until after bowl games to declare.

There is no playoff system that prohibits rematches or bars teams that don’t win their conference. Why is this? Because the intent of the designers is to match up the two best teams for a championship and the undeniable, common sense fact is that sometimes there can be two worthy teams in the same division. Yet some are saying that just because college football has a voting system, this fact should ignored. Are you kidding me? This argument is so goofy you have to conclude that the different system argument against a rematch is just a smokescreen to cover biases.

“LSU-Alabama BCS title game is another win for SEC”

I beg to disagree. The matchup broadcasts in prime time with all the accompanying glitz and glimmer the spiraling absurdity and hypocrisy of the BCS system and the narcissistic hubris of the SEC. This is NOT a good situation for the SEC, despite the profits. Bubbles will burst, or be burst, and rightly so in this case. As for the BCS, good riddance, sooner rather than later.

The BCS is nothing but a beauty contest. To have a so-called “National Championship” game matching two teams from the same conference is offensive to all the people clammoring for a playoff system, offensive to people who value the SEC Championship, and offensive to every conference winner outside the SEC not given a fair opportunity to compete for the National Championship.

Not pitting LSU against another Conference Champion is a lost opportunity for the NCAA, the BCS, the SEC, and College Football in general. Sad, very sad.

“Not pitting LSU against another Conference Champion is a lost opportunity for the NCAA, the BCS, the SEC, and College Football in general. Sad, very sad”

Why pitting LSU against another conference champ? Why?

So you don’t care about the best teams playing for NC, sorry, Big12 has 10 teams this season and they are not supposed to have a conference champ. Notre Dame is independent so they cannot be a champ of any conference.

SEC CG picks the 5th best SEC team UGA against the best team LSU, you know what happened? the 5th best team was murdered by the best team.

If you don’t want the best teams to play for NC, you can live in our own little world, because most people want the best teams.

Oh come on. The two best defenses ever wouldn’t have given up over 500 yards to West Virginia or over 350 yards to an FCS team. They are good, but don’t overblow it. The problem isn’t really with their great defenses it’s the fact that neither team cares about offense at all.

DawgDad pretty much nailed it. This championship is bad for pretty much everyone. The SEC would be better off with only one team in. That way LSU and Alabama could both win and they could chant SEC twice. Now they have to deal with a game that is under a ton of scrutiny and don’t really get any extra payoff for it. There is not much benefit to having two teams from your conference in the championship when one was probably enough to win.

Truth and IMHO,

If BAMA wins, BAMA will be BCS Champ, which is determined by the outcome of the game.

AP Champ is actually an opinion of poll voters. But BCS Champ is determined by the field result.

BCS is a 2-team playoff system. Falcons beat Packers last year in regular season, but they lost to Packers in playoff. Packers won in the “do over” and became superbowl champ.

You have your own opinions, but tonight’s BCS Champ Game will determine a BCS Champ based on the game result, not your own personal opinions, that’s the beauty of the BCS system.

I will attempt to be unbiased here. Someone mentioned in a post that Bama winning the game tonight would be good for the BCS. I would disagree. LSU has certainly earned the right. Despite ignorant comments about them giving up big yards in two games (mop-up time), I could argue that LSU is the best college football team of all time if they win tonight. Beating Bama twice (once in Bama), beating BE Champ WV, beating Pac-10 Champ Oregon, and taking out a Top 10 Arkansas team is absolutely a sterling resume.

As for Bama, I don’t know if they belong or not. While some people take offense to low scoring games, I gag watching Baylor/Washington, Stan/OSU shoot-outs. You only have to look at high-powered offences (Ohio State vs. Fla., OU vs. Florida, Ore. vs. AU, Ohio State, vs. LSU) running up against SEC teams to see the same old story of them getting shut down. Of the previous five MNC games, the SEC team has always been far below in all offensive categories than thier opponent. The points by those opponents? 14, 24, 14, 21, 19. Why would it be different this year is OSU had made it?

I for one would like to see LSU play OSU or Stanford, but I completely understand why Bama is there. And I understand the arguments of why they should not be there. Personally, I would like LSU to win, but I believe Bama winning (especially by a very close margin) could bring about the chaos everyone wants. Think about it. LSU beats seven Top 25 teams, including two Conference champs, Bama in their backyard, but loses by three in the final game of the year…and Bama is awarded the MNC? It all may be moot. I think Bama wins by 10 or more, but LSU obviouisly has the ability to win this game.

At the end of the day, the other conferences, including the Big 10 and Pac 12 now want a playoff. They didn’t when the SEC wanted it, but now they do. There is one more year of the BCS before it must be renewed. ESPiN seems to be manuvering for a playoff system. I would love to see it. Everything at this point is speculation on who should be number 2. Whether it be a Plus 1, eight-team, or 16-team playoff, it would be a far cry better than we have now. I’d much prefer the argument on who should be number four than who deserves to be number two. Even better would be who deserves the five open bids after the 11 conference champions, but I would take anything at this point. We need a playoff.

No one ever said that teams that don’t make the playoffs can’t go to lesser bowl games. Alphare, obviously it would take some logistical work, but you could play the first round of playoffs the weekend of the Championship games (assuming you axe one creampuff game from the schedule). Championship games would be last weekend in November and the first-round would be first week of December.

To make it work beautifully, you would need an eight-team playoff. How you get these eight is another argument. The first four games will be home games. After the first round, you have four teams remaining. Set-up your bowl games just like normal at this point except for these four teams. Eliminate one of the four BCS locations. For example, let’s say the Fiesta Bowl is no longer a BCS bowl. You would have the Sugar, Rose, and Orange Bowl as the final three game locations. Each of these bowls would get the NC game once every three years and the other two bowls would hold the semi-finals. Do you know how much money would be made in this system?

Both the Missouri and Texas A&M programs will be strengthened by joining the SEC. They will begin to siphon off recruits from OK and Texas because those athletes will have the opportunity of playing for the top conference in the country. I am not convinced about more money. My biggest issue is to keep the long-lasting traditions, and the champ don’t have to play too many games while others are bystanders.

I believe one of the reasons college football is so popular is no playoff. It gets everybody involved in an argument as to who is the best. Playoff may shut up lots of fans and fans of less talented teams eventually lose interest. Tech can be a good example of it.

For another argument of why the bowls need to go away, look at the TV ratings for this year:

Orange Bowl: 5.3 down from 7.1
Sugar Bowl: 7.0 down from 9.5
Rose Bowl: 11.8 down from 13.1
Fiesta Bowl: 9.7 up from 7.1

Only one BCS game grew in viewership this year. As a comparison, last nights Broncos/Steelers NFL playoff game had a 25.9. Higher then the Orange, Sugar, and Rose bowls combined. If college football ever wants to grow again it will have to get rid of this system.

IL Jacket

Whether a 16 team playoff or the 32 bowls generate more money is hard to quantify not knowing how much TV money the playoff system would generate. It is the case, however, that many of hte teams playing in the bowls, at least the minor ones, do not make money after taking into account the expenses of travel, band, administrators, etc. Virtually, all of the major conferences have some sort of revenue sharing of bowl revenue so the perverse situation exists that teams from those conferences that do not go to bowls may actually better off financially. As someone has noted before, the bowls are an entrenched fact of college football that the University Presidents like, so it is hard to see a playoff system developing much beyond what we have now.

I am an SEC homer, but this game does nothing to improve our lot in the nation’s eyes. Again, I am not saying Bama does not belong there, I’m just saying it would add more to the mystique of the SEC if LSU were to beat OSU…and no, I do not believe OSU belongs there over Bama, I’m just saying perception.

While I am only one fan, I did not watch OSU/Stanford or WV/Clemson. Like some people hate low-scoring games, I abhor games with no defense. I think of high scoring games as 28 to 24. I don’t even know how to comprehend 70 – 33 or whatever that Baylor/Washington score was. If we had an eight-team playoff, I would be intrigued and fascinated to watch the first four games. I couldn’t imagine the TV ratings not spiking for this and TV = revenue.

KState @ LSU
Boise@Bama
Arkansas@OSU
Oregon@Stanford (granted, seen this one already).

If it worked out that the SEC won three of these four, so be it. At least some of the bickering and speculation would be answered.

@GTBob

Fact about the Sugar Bowl being down is that there was an ACC team playing and not an SEC playing. The ACC was not deserving of playing in 2 BCS Bowls. However, VT would have been a better match up than ClemPson in the Orange.
My point is that veiwers accross the nation will tune into a major bowl with an SEC team much more than an ACC team. Most perceive the ACC as a basketball conference only!

RealBob

Well GTBob thinks a lot like Georgia Tech Coach Paul Johnson. Johnson stated in an interview that he feels the quality of play and talent in the ACC is just as strong as the SEC. The last six national champions are from the SEC, three SEC teams are in the BCS top 10 and the SEC bowl record of 5 wins and 2 losses is much better tha the ACC record of 2 wins and 5 losses. I believe GTBob and Paul make decisions based on emotion rather than fact.

I agree with DawginLex. LSU has already beaten Bama in Tuscaloosa. It will be a shame if LSU loses a close one and Bama is crowned the champs. Unfortunatley, the BCS was designed to match up the 2 best teams and I think they got it right in that case. Most of us will never be truly satisfied until there is a play-off.

Most? Try everyone outside the ACC. It will continue to be this way until they can win at least half of their BCS bowls. For several years I felt like the Big East should lose their automatic bid. Well, after hanging 70 on the ACC champs I’m starting to think that the ACC should be the one to lose the automatic bid.

DawginLex…I didn’t think about the layoff. That is a very valid point. in fact, it is the basis for Boise State’s quality wins when given an off-season for a big first game or four-weeks for a bowl game. Granted, they simply dominated UGA and you can’t take that away from them; however, they are notorious for the hook and ladder, statue of liberty plays, etc. in bowl games when they can prepare for everything. Still, in the words of Freddi Gonzalez, I guess you have to Tip Your Cap to their coaching staff.

For all those who are complaining about LSU playing Bama for the BCS championship because of the lack of some type of playoff system then I go along with that. What I can’t understand are those people who are bad-mouthing, cursing and blaming Bama for being in the game as if we controlled the BCS voting.

Also, I disagree DawginLex that bama “struggled to beat Penn State.” I do agree that PSU got beat by a very good Houston team but we scored in every quarter against PSU and they only scored in the 1st and 4th quarters (final score 27-11). I have never given UGA a hard time for playing what some people have said was a “cupcake schedule” since it just so happened that LSU, Bama & Arkansas were not in the rotation this past year.

I will be pulling for my alma mater tonight for two reasons. First, because it is my alma mater and second so that if Bama wins then this should place enough heat on the college presidents, BCS officials, NCAA, AFL-CIO, ASPCA, Pipefitters Local 314 and whoever else necessary to get a playoff system established.

LSU-Bama rematch is egg on the face of the BCS. This is a system that constantly argues that they have the best regular season in sports. On top of that, as recent as 2007, they kept teams out of the title game because of not winning their conference (UGA).

So now what about the regular season and conference title? The decision to put Bama in this game over Oklahoma St. completely blows that up. Bama not only did not win their conference, LSU already beat them for it. HAHA how stupid can this get?

All this game and matchups like the Sugar Bowl have done this year is expose this system for what it really cares about…politics and money. The big name programs get richer and get the big games (Michigan, Alabama, Va Tech), while the other programs get shafted (Kellen Moore and Boise St., Oklahoma St., etc.).

Kellen Moore should have ended as the QB with the most wins with a Sugar Bowl game. Oklahoma St. should have ended a fantastic season where it beat more top 25 teams than Bama with a national championship shot. On the field results (our greatest regular season in sports) dont really mean anything.

Mike, the anti-rematch argument was nonsensical even before the bowl games were set, and yet with the benefit of seeing how Oklahoma St and Iowa St played in their bowls you’re still pushing that exposed logic? Unbelievable. Did you not see Stanford push OSU and its 107th ranked defense all over the field only to lose on a missed FG? Did you not see how LSU seal-clubbed Georgia in the second half of the SEC game? Knowing that, you would still put OSU’s defense in against LSU? In the interest of seeing a competitive game, I’m glad real football guys were there to make the correct decision instead of fans such as yourself who either have only a superficial knowledge of the game or are just plain biased.

A comparison to prove that Oklahoma State was a better team than Alabama and deserved the right to play for the National Championship.

Alabama (H) 48-7 Kent State (5-7) Cupcake
Alabama @ 27-11 Penn State (9-3) Good Big10 Team
Alabama (H) 41-0 North Texas (5-7) Cupcake
Alabama (H) 38-14 Arkansas (10-2) Strong SEC Team
Alabama @ 48-13 Florida (6-6) Weak SEC Team
Alabama (H) 34-0 Vanderbilt (6-6) Weak SEC Team
Alabama @ 52-7 Mississippi (2-9) Cupcake
Alabama (H) 37-6 Tennessee ( 5-7) Weak SEC Team
Alabama (H) 6-9 LSU (13-0) Legitimate #1 Team
Alabama @ 24-7 Miss St. (6-6) Weak SEC Team
Alabama (H) 45-21 Georgia Sou. (11-2) Cupcake (Not D1 Team)
Alabama @ 42-14 Auburn (7-5) Mediocre SEC Team

Beat 2 strong SEC teams, 1 Mediocre SEC team, and 3 Weak SEC teams. Lost to LSU.
Beat one Good Big 10 team
Beat 4 cupcake teams.
Alabama beat only 4 legitimate teams for 2011. They beat only 4 teams with a winning record. Alabama had 8 wins against cupcakes and weak teams.

Alabama played only two tough SEC teams and both were at Alabama’s home field. They won 1 and lost 1 of the two tough games played in the SEC and at their own stadium. The only other decent team they beat was Penn State at Penn State. Alabama had 4 cupcake wins and 4 wins over weak SEC teams. They also did not win their own division in the SEC. This definitely did not merit playing for the National Championship.

—–

Oklahoma State (H) 61-34 La.-Lafayette (8-4) Good Sun Belt Team
Oklahoma State (H) 37-14 Arizona (4-8) Cupcake
Oklahoma State @ 59-33 Tulsa (8-4) Good Conference USA Team
Oklahoma State @ 30-29 Texas A&M (6-6) Mediocre Big 12 Team
Oklahoma State (H) 70-28 Kansas (2-10) Cupcake
Oklahoma State @ 38-26 Texas (7-5) Mediocre Big 12 Team
Oklahoma State @ 45-24 Missouri (7-5) Mediocre Big 12 Team
Oklahoma State (H) 59-24 Baylor (9-3) Good Big 12 Team
Oklahoma State (H) 52-45 Kansas State (10-2) Strong Big 12 Team
Oklahoma State @ 66-6 Texas Tech (5-6) Cupcake
Oklahoma State @ 31-37 Iowa State (6-6) Weak Big 12 Team
Oklahoma State (H) 44-10 Oklahoma (9-3) Good Big 12 Team

Oklahoma State beat 1 strong Big 12 team and 2 Good Big 12 teams. They also beat a good Sun Belt team and a good Conference USA team. The Big 12 conference was better from top to bottom than the South Eastern Conference. Oklahoma State beat 8 legitimate teams for 2011 against Alabama’s 4 legitimate wins. Oklahoma State also beat 7 teams with winning records against Alabama’s 4.

The one loss for Alabama was on its home field. The one loss for Oklahoma State was on the opponents home field.

Oklahoma State had 3 cupcake wins and 1 win against a weak team. Of Oklahoma State’s wins, only 4 were cupcakes or weak teams as opposed to 8 for Alabama. Oklahoma State was also the champion of the Big 12 Conference.

2. LSU already played and beat Pac-12 and Rose Bowl Winner Oregon. LSU already played and beat Big East and Orange Bowl winner West Virginia. LSU already played and beat Cotton Bowl winner Arkansas. Alabama you can make a case for, but you said “teams”.
3. As for the SEC being weak, they lost two games…Vandy and UGA. Vandy was soundly beaten. UGA just got out-coached and out-QB’d, but you have to give credit to Michigan State at the same time. Considering the SEC has the best bowl record, again, shows your ignorance.

If you have a beef with UGA, the SEC, whatever it is, simply man up and say it. Blanket statements like yours simply reek of jealousy and are simply irrelevant. In their bowl game, instead of going in and making a statement OSU spent the last few seconds of regulation on their knees praying that Stanford would miss a FG. Not impressive. Pretenders all year, they were incapable of tackling anyone. Their 107th ranked defense gave up an average of 33 first downs and 200 rushing yards a game. There has never been a team with such a pathetic defense to make it to a national championship game, much less ever win one, yet this is what the no-rematch weenies would have given us. To Silly Bloggers and other ignorant posters. It makes zero difference who won or lost their bowl games. The decision to play for the BCS is based on the games prior to the bowl games. As I proved conclusively in my post regarding the scores and information prior to the bowl games, there is no doubt that Oklahoma State should be playing LSU in the BCS.

Silly Bloggers posted comments about who LSU beat during the season, and it has zero to do with Alabama’s schedule against their cupcake opponents. Silly Bloggers, you are ignore the facts presented to you and, evidently, not capable of seeing the obvious.

It should have been LSU and Oklahoma State in the BCS. Alabama was not capable of even winning its division of the SEC. They don’t deserve to win the BCS if they can’t win their division title. Even if they were to beat LSU, they are still not the division or SEC champions. They are second rate in their division. I am sure every team in America who lost to their competitor in a close game would like another chance to beat them in the same year.

Silly Bloggers is so ignorant of the status he posted that Oregon, and other teams would have been in the BCS if they had won certain games. Yes, and the same goes for Alabama. If they had beaten LSU, they would have deserved the chance in the BCS. They did not and do not deserve to be in the game. They are a second rate team to the Division Champion in their own league.

Alabama and LSU need to play a best two out of three games to see which one can actually win their division.
