Kirby Smart says he’s ready to make jump to head coach

NEW ORLEANS — Two years after saying no to his alma mater, Kirby Smart can take comfort in one thing: The next time somebody picks up the phone to offer him a job, it won’t be for a lateral move.

Georgia wanted Smart back as their defensive coordinator, a position he already held at Alabama. But there was a thought by some in Athens, including Mark Richt, that the promise of a more-than-doubled salary – and the option of an attractive escape route from under Nick Saban’s thumb – could lure Smart back to the Bulldogs.

It didn’t happen — and that was the wisest decision Smart ever made.

When Alabama faces LSU on Monday night, Smart will have a chance to win his second BCS championship in three seasons. He no longer is viewed as merely a hot young assistant ready to jump at any head coaching job. He sounds more head coach-ready than ever before, and, to a large degree, he can be choosy about any offers that come his way.

“I definitely think I’m ready to take the next step,” Smart said. “It’s gotta be the right place, the right opportunity. That hasn’t really presented itself. I’m completely happy being the defensive coordinator at Alabama. It’s the greatest non-head coaching job in the country.”

When Georgia started this season 0-2 and Mark Richt’s job security was tenuous, Smart frequently was referenced as a logical candidate to replace him. An unexpected 10-game winning streak blew up that scenario, and Richt’s not going anywhere now.

Smart will tell you he doesn’t pay attention to rumors. Coaches need to operate with tunnel vision. So it follows that when he was asked Saturday, given his aspirations, if he ever allowed himself to take notice when another major program struggled this season, he laughed.

“If you start doing that, you lose your own job,” he said.

Don’t doubt a man who works for Nick Saban.

Smart presided over a defense that allowed the fewest yards (191.2) and points (8.83) per game this season. LSU’s offense has averaged over 38 points. Alabama held the Tigers to three field goals in November (albeit, they were enough for a 9-6 overtime win).

Smart even looked and sounded like a head coach Saturday.

Smart even looks and sounds like a head coach.

The defense is not all about Smart having Saban above him and great athletes below. He has grown as an assistant in the past two years.

“I look at things from a different perspective now,” he said. “I used to look at things from the secondary, then as a coordinator. Now it’s like, ‘What would I do as a head coach?”

We have been hearing for two years that Saban’s demanding style will wear on the 36-year-old Smart and chase him out of Tuscaloosa. It must mean something that he’s still there.

“When you say, ‘demanding,’ to me the definition of demanding is they require you to do what you’re supposed to do, when you’re supposed to do it, and how you’re supposed to do it,” Smart said. “That’s what [Saban] does. So is he demanding? Yeah. He requires you to do your job. And I appreciate that. That gives me job security knowing that everyone in the organization is held accountable.”

(Is it just me, or is he starting to sound like Saban?)

Continuing: “To me that’s probably the greatest feature I’ve learned or will take with me when I become a head coach, is you have to be demanding.  You have to be able to confront people if they’re not doing their job or not doing it the way you want it.”

Are you sold yet?

Smart officially said no to Georgia on Jan. 11, 2010. Alabama matched the Dogs’ offer ($750,000 annually, which equated to a $390,000 raise). Smart said at the time he “wouldn’t have even considered discussing the [coordinator] position with any other school.”

He added this Saturday: “I felt I still needed to develop as a coach so I could be a head coach, and what better way to do that than under Nick Saban?”

He made the right decision to stay. Before long, somebody will make the right decision to phone him.

Why would any school want Kirby Smart? He isn’t even man enough to speak for himself. Do you think he can even make his own decision if offered a HC job or will he have to ask Nick Saban if he can take it or not? He is strictly a “Follower” and not a “Leader” just look how Nick Saban has him under his thumb at Bama.

Great article, Jeff. I agree that Kirby has a bright future somewhere when the opportunity arises. I am a Dawg fan and would have loved to see him back in Athens in some capacity, but he made the right decision to sit tight where he is and wait on a head job.

As one poster stated…….Muschamp will win a championship at Florida (maybe more than just one) before Richt wins one at Georgia (which may be never). Georgia fans can only pray that Smart will some day be the head coach at Georgia…..but I think he will be gone from Bama long before Georgia is done with accepting just Richt’s 6 to 10 win seasons.

Muschamp inherited a very tough situation at Florida this year (depth wise…especially on offense). He is correcting that problem with his recruiting this year. If the Gators get the OC from Boise (and keep him away from Bama)…..then things will get even better on the offensive side of the ball. It is already very good on the defensive side….and geting even better.

January 7th, 2012

Spurrier will retire end of next year. After NOT WINNING the SEC EAST AGAIN in 2012, he will see that at his age, he will have lost it. By this time next year, he will also have lost his running back, Lattimore to the NFL, if not sooner in the 2012 season, to gimpy, chalky knees and tendons made out of rubber bands. No, this time next year, Spurrier will be wrapping up another Cap One Bowl IF ………IF he is lucky. He is toast.

Kirby will likely get that job. It is a natural. If not SC, then maybe MSU will need a coach when their current guy Mullins ( once hot, now not) is fired. Kirby also could be considered for a job out in Texas, maybe. Brown will be fired like cheap socks if they end up like this past year. Mack Brown is on the HOT SEAT like GT’s CPJ.

Texas or SC for Kirby. What he does with it ……………anyone’s guess. His playmate Will MUSCHUMP might be fired within two more years, if they do not do any better in the EAST than they did this year. He has two years to rocket Florida to the top or he will be dumped like bad bar b q.

Life is funny. Kirby is on the ups right now and now Muschamp, once hot, now not, could be on the descent.

Richt? Ascending baby like, UGA is with an all Soph and Junior led team and MY MAN CTG.

Bullard, another 5 star get at DE, is a BIG TIME get for the Gators. Clemson and SC pushed hard to get him….and Muschamp won another. I think he is going to beat Saban for Jenkins on Monday. Just a very strong feeling based on the Tyriq McCord deal last week. McCord is good, wanted to be a Gator, but was told that the Gators did not have a spot for him (he would have played the same postion that Jenkins would play for the Gators…..to me…..2 plus 2 = 4. But I could be wrong. I hope not. Jenkins would or is going to be a terror in the SEC playing in the hybrid LB position in the Gator 3-4. And….my gosh….the Gator secondary is going to be unbelieveble with the players they already have and the players committed…..and those who are going to still commit. The Gator D is going to be very, very good…..and very, very deep….just like LSU.

*******************************************************************************************************************

You know, now for 2 plus years I have read your post and you have held your ground pretty well against UGA and all of their bs and excuses. But after readin post after post after post from you lately it may be time for you to let the play of Florida speak for itself in the upcoming season. Last year in Urban’s final season you defended some very poor play by some players who by all accounts were head and shoulder above everyone else in the recruiting business. Players who were just not ready to get in the system, a coach whose system was dissected by a couple of DC’s and HC’s and could shut it down without much effort.

Here lately you have posted about all these great players committing and how they will make a difference. You said the same thing last year about Driskell and how he could play right away and make life tough for your SEC opponents. You bragged about how good your defense was and how much speed your Gators had on both sides of the ball and how Charlie Weiss was going to be a great OC in the SEC.

Well, after review we all now with all that talent and speed, and OC genius and Defensive minded Muschamp that UF was a 4th place team in a very very weak East. Driskell was not ready, Weiss was to fat and not ready for NFL type defense speed by your opponents and Muschamp needed to grow into the job.

Now, I have no doubt Muschamp will be a great head coach one day, but you need him to win a game of importance before you continue to make the BOLD statements and on the way feel free to beat UGA as we all know they think they are better than sliced bread while in reality they are pretty stale and moldy.

I think Kirby Smart is ready for a head coaching job. I wish him and all former Dawgs nothing but the best, except when they oppose us in a game.

Georgia fans need to focus on our program and their own attributes. We’ve got a lot of growing up to do as a fan base. The fact that there are moron bloggers out there still looking to find a replacement for Richt and showing up late for games turns my stomach.

Stephen A.Dawg: Smart to Tennessee in 2013.

January 7th, 2012
6:54 pm

UGA won’t have the priviledge of bringing the Smart Dawg back home. They tried it once by offering CKS the DC position and he turned it down. Georgia eventually landed Coach Grantham. Smart Dawg only has to wait one more year and he can pick his destination. Tennessee will be immediately hiring and the Tex-ass Shorthorns will be needing a head coach if they flop in 2012. It appears USC’s Spurrier has two more years left, but a win or loss this year to UGA could be the variable he uses to determines to stay or go. No matter how you slice it Smart won’t have a chance at landing at UGA unless Richt stumbles to another 6-7 in 2012. Not likely, Richt wins 8 off his creampuff schedule by accident.

Hawg Head….

He just won a VERY BIG game of importance….in the Gator Bowl….against Ohio State…..Urban Meyer’s future team…..and the win prevented the Gator from having a losing season…..and they dominated an Ohio State team that beat Wisconsin and lost to Michigan State by 3 points.

And I never that about Driskell. I said I wished he would play right away….but I was concerned that his small high school background (similar to Brantley’s) might require him to redshirt. I was surprised this summer when they planned to redshirt Brissett instead of Driskell. I did think that Driskell coming in early would earn him playing time this year. But I knew Brantley would play in the pro style offense this year, not Driskell. The game was too big for Driskell this year. But he learned….and he will compete with Brissett for the starting QB postion at Florida next year. The winner of that battle will be prepared to play next year….and will likely have an outstanding season. Driskell is very talented…..just needs experience and time. The same is true of Brissett. The Gators are in great shape at QB…..so much so that Muschamp did not even recruit a QB this year.

Followed by a deep belly laugh. Winning a game against a team with a 6-6 record, who by all accounts have given up is not a BIG GAME. Big Game are championship games or games that get into a championship game.

Last year afte the UA game you continually bragged on how much the big TE and Driskell would make a difference and if memory serves correctly you used the words “Tebow Lite”. But feel free to beg out now and I guess it will need to be played out on the field and allow Muschamp prove he can coach at this level.
Best of luck to you, but continually bragging on UF after a season in which you lost to UGA is not good, but like I said earlier, feel free to lay the wood to them for another 17 of 20 years anytime you want. I just think at this point Jimbo has his buddies number for a few more years.

Kirby will do well somewhere but of course there is a learning curve and you usually don’t go from asst coach to head coach at another school where all is going well. He will get a depleted program, some decommitments and will have to endure a bit of tough sledding. Note that the good coaches turn programs around in 2-3 years. He will probably do this wherever he goes and should have a winning season his first year. He has learned from the best.

It means Kansas State should get as many votes as AL.

Smart has burnt his bridges with UGA, he will get a job somewhere soon, but predict he will not be as successful as Muschump. To much talent in Foriduh and he will not have that at his disposal. Predict Gayturs ti be better next few years, but Muschamp winning aNC don’t see that happening.

Judging from how many players from UGA are currently in NFL, Coach Richt has grossly underperformed during his tenure at UGA.
Yea, and UGA winning East this year was purely a fluke of scheduling- may happen again next year, you know, lose to SC, and beat all the sucky teams in SEC for East title. Won’t matter, WE RUN THE EAST, 45-42!

First, of course, the New Orleans rules…like Jordan rules in the NBA.
Now, can we get Bobo to go to Fayetteville and consult with their OC about how to score TDs when in the red zone instead of FGs? CMR consulted with Homer Rice after his first year to get help with clock and timeout management…a lesson he should revisit, by the way. CMB should seek other ideas about how to ‘attack’ the end zone when in the red zone.
Kirby can go get another job as a HC, then come to Athens when CMR retires. Incidentally, can you run a photo of his wife, a former Lady Dog basketball player? She is a really nice lady and VERY good looking

But it was for Muschamp, the team, and for those who follow the Gators…..given that the team will soon be coached by Meyer…….so laugh out of your belly all you want……..but FLORIDA won their bowl game and beat a team that beat Wisconsin….who played in the Rose Bowl….and lost to the team Georgia LOST to in their bowl game……..10 to 7…..yes, OSU allowed only 10 points to Michigan State……EXACTLY HOW MANY POINTS DID THE “GREAT” GEORGIA DEFENSE “ALLOW” MICHIGAN STATE TO SCORE? A LOT MORE THAN 10.

And….if I recall……that 6 win Georgia team from last year lost to Central Florida in the Memphis Bowl. Florida does not go to Memphis Bowls…..even when they win only 6 games. Dawgs know this, but with their weak minds, they tend to forget, so here’s a reminder:

Georgia Tech is a very highly ranked academic school that has a football team. Its alumni and fans have real lives and careers that don’t depend on the football team for their happiness.

Georgia, on the other hand, is basically a sell-your-soul-to-the-devil football factory that also gives diplomas – worthless as they are. They have sleazy coaches like Mark Richt who have no scruples or ethics, who recruit morons who barely got through high school, and collect huge paychecks, but still can’t win big games.

Now, can you remember all that?

So Saban is paying a non-DC $750,000 a year. If that’s so, he’s in second place in the NCAA for “Most Overpaid Coach.”

Bob it is about winning. If you hire the guy it is Alabama getting trashed. Smart gets a paycheck from Alabama, he should be trashing Georgia and every other school in the conference. Georgia never finds these guys coming up, they are always wanting to hire them after someone like Nick Saban finds them. He is a Georgia boy, you should have known about him before Saban. I think he really did think Richt was being fired, and hell he should be fired. It is a good reason not to come to Georgia himself, could you imagine leaving Alabama for a assistant coaching job to Richt an inferior coach. As I said, I think you should fire Richt , you are looking for a reason to keep him because he is nice. Richt lost to every team ranked above it this year. Have you been watching the NFL playoffs? There is more Georgia talent out there than any school in the country. I am not talking about the kind Tech has which usually is a niche player, I am talking about all pro type talent, some Canton Hall of Fame players. I seriously do not understand how you lose to anybody, you are you own worse enenies.

Maybe Saban is like Bellichick – his assistants never do well when they leave. Speaking of Bellichick, I read an article on him about 2 years ago, and he admitted that he took off-season trips to Gainesville and Tuscaloosa annually in the off season to see what innovations his friends, Urban Myer and Nick Saban, were working on. He said those two helped keep the Pats’ offense and defense “ahead of the curve.”

No mention stopping by Athens . . .

I love UGA and the Dawgs but have come to the conclusion we will be good but never great. I am so tired of the conservative play calling when leading by as little as one score. The Mich State game was a great example. We had the ball on our 40 with roughly 3 1/2 minutes to play and a 7 point lead. Rather than giving Murray a chance to get a first down and win the game. We wasted 3 no gain runs and gave the ball to a widely known great quarterback. Did Richt / Bobo really think taking a 1 1/2 the clock would keep Cousins from taking his team down the field against a tired defense? Unlike West VA (coach after half said they were going to keep the offense open after being up 49-20 at halftime) we will never have the ‘go for the jugular’ mentality with a coach and OC to scared to want to win. Sorry, like I said, I love the Dawgs and Richt, but he needs to be more aggressive to get to the next level.

bama mike

The difference in Richt and Saban is style. Some players as well as coaches are more productive under a demanding leader others get same results under a more laid back environment. The key is to recruit and find the right players and coaches to match the style.

Just because a person is a good defensive coach, does not mean they will be a good head coach, I do not look for UGA to hire another intern coach when CMR leaves, it will be some one who has already showed, that they can coach somewhere else. There is a lot of difference in running a Defense and running a whole team. Neither Muschamp or Kirby have proved that they can run a football program we don’t even know if Kirby is running the Bama defense, but one thing I do know Joey, Saban run the NFL Dolphins in the ground, you really think Bellichick needs his help? It was the other way around, man Joey you and your little Git friends need to get a life!

Yeah those scumbags at bama can keep him. And they won’t be champs if they win monday, so he only has the one title to claim.

whatever…. Smart gets press for one reason…Saban. What average coach in America would not have success in the environment that he operates in. And who really knows how much of that Defense is his? UGA was the real winner when he said no… Grantham is so far ahead of Smart it really isn’t a comparison.

The farther we can get that lying turd Kirby Smart away from Georgia, the better.

Why is there any discussion of other coaches on the minds of Georgia fans? I thought the current-state leadership had you “knocking on the door of greatness.”

Baaahaha so funny.

Its funny how all you boneheads think yourselves to be savants when it comes to figuring out who is or will be a great coach. You boneheads are laughable simple minded twits!

And the Orange CEO is not a great coach. have you Einsteins figured that one out yet? NO!

I can’t believe how Dawg fans are bagging on some of their former players who actually contributed more to the program than just showing up for class. Most of the guys hating are probably nothing more then “sidewalk” fans though. I hope true UGA alumni have more class. I believe they do.

Ridiculous how the hating UGA homers on Smart and Muschamp can’t comprehend that sometimes better opportunity and career moves don’t always leave one back to working for their alma mater. I’m pretty sure they learned that in college. College football is a business. Smart and Muschamp have made business decisions with their careers yet the mouth breathing butt hurt homers on here can’t see past their unhealthy love for their team to comprehend that. Smart and Muschamp are truly American in taking full advantage of their talent, opportunity, and the available choices that their hard work has made available to them. UGA fans should be proud of that. I imagine the intelligent ones are.

You UGA idiots all swallowed Richt’s Schtick hook line and sinker. That sinker will pull you to the bottom of the SEC.

You made your bed, now you will lie in it. And it will stink…

You will soon be surrounded by superior head coaches, all with ties to UGA, while you are living with a 1990s ACC FSU fossil…

With such stupid alumni, UGA’s credentials should be reviewed for accreditation.

Sounds like Coach Smart won’t be hiring Mike Bozo any time soon.

Do many of you realize that Smart is probably already a better coach than some current SEC coaches and most of the HC’s in the ACC?

Uninformed article. Smart isn’t close to being able to be ‘choosy’ about a head coaching position. He has wanted many of these jobs badly, including the Southern Miss job that he tried to portray as him making the decision to bow out. Fact is, he wasn’t going to get the job. He would’ve loved the A&M job as well, and they didn’t give him a sniff.

Truth be told, Smart staying at Bama under Saban was a stupid career choice. But it worked out great for UGA. This myth that he’s somehow a candidate to land a bigtime head coaching position is really, really ignorant stuff.

Yeah Tenn job will be open before the end of 2012 orf as soon as it is over. He talks the talk but will he walk the walk? Muschamp talked it too but its a whole different ball game when you are actually the head coach. He is under Saban so yeah what better place to learn, but he is under Saban, so who knows? I would take a chance on him though. If he pans out though, he will be UGA coach when Richt retires…..

Hey Jeff, you angling to be Smart’s agent? Hope he never comes back to Georgia. He’s a POS and shouldn’t be allowed even to visit the state. When he croaks, the Governor shouldn’t allow his body to be buried here. Leave it in Alabama.

Saban runs the defense. Smart is a high priced assistant. MusChump is a notch below Smart as a coach and he reminds me of the Zooker.
