Digi-Blog’s snapshot of New Orleans before BCS title game

NEW ORLEANS — As a general rule, the Digi-Blog tries to take you to unusual places you might not be familiar with. I’m pretty sure most of you are familiar with New Orleans, perhaps even that there are bars there. But during my morning drive here for Monday’s BCS title game between LSU and Alabama, I thought, “Why not?” One more little blog justifies at least a few more meals on the expense account. (This is the only road trip I don’t measure by deals — I measure by meals.) So here’s a snapshot of Nola, with a few surprised guests!

So I picked up all of my stuff for work in the media room, just in case I actually do any. (I’ve always thought it would be a much better job if the stories didn’t get in the way of things. You know: travel, eat, drink, go to a game, talk to the players, second-guess the coach, then go back to the hotel and get ready to do it again in the next city. Damn stories throw off the pacing.)  Anyway, you’ll find this free souvenir BCS bag and several luggage tags on eBay next week. Or we can just open the bidding now.

"Yes. I'm here on business. When purchasing poker chips, would it be possible to obtain a receipt that reads, "Lunch buffet and note pads? On a related note: red or black?""

“Yes. I’m here on business. When purchasing poker chips, would it be possible to obtain a receipt that reads, “Lunch buffet” and “note pads”?Also, on a related note: red or black?”

The Detroit Lions are in town for a playoff game against the New Orleans Saints Saturday night. Ndamukong Suh was gracious enough to pose for a photo."

The NFL playoffs start this weekend. The Detroit Lions are in town to play the Saints. Ndamukong Suh was gracious enough to pose for this photo.”

Nick Saban will do anything to look taller.

I realize he’s a great coach. But seriously: Does Nick Saban need to go to such great lengths just to look taller?

These three LSU players walked past me. There used to be three potted trees in front of that store, but they ate them.

You can buy almost anything in New Orleans, even this group photo of every Atlanta Spirit partner.

You can buy almost anything in New Orleans, even this group photo of every Atlanta Spirit partner. That’s Bruce Levenson on the top row to the left in devil red.

Normally I would stop for an order (or six) of Beignets — wonderful fattening, powdered-sugar donut-like creations — and a cup of chicory coffee. But I’ve got something else on my mind right now.

Three staples of any visit for me to New Orleans: Cafe Du Monde, Mother’s (not pictured) and this place: Central Grocery — a cool market in the French market area and home to the original Muffuletta.

muffelattaI’ve put away a whole one of these before but I need to pace myself. So I bought just one-half of heaven’s sandwich: several meats that are allegedly really bad for us (whatever), provolone cheese and Central Grocery’s famous olive dressing on round Sicilian sesame bread. Ate it in about 12 seconds.

jaxAn artists’ area in Jackson Square. The dog just spotted someone with a Muffuletta.

royalThis is my favorite street in the French Quarter — Royal Street. A lot of antique stores and art shops. Yeah, I like culture and stuff. I’m a lot deeper than you think. Sebastien, fetch my overcoat.

bourbonThis is a small part of what used to be my favorite street in the French Quarter — Bourbon Street. This is during tame, daylight hours. But I’ve walked out of too many bars and into too many lamp posts here through the years. I’ve outgrown it. So if I never see Bourbon Street again, I’ll be fine.

happyhourOn second thought  . . . WOW! WHAT A DEAL! You know, I really need to do my part to help revive the local economy.

I’ll be back tomorrow with a column on Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart.

I think.

Maybe while you are in town to watch Bama we can get together and talk 2013 recruiting. Yes I know but I have pretty much wrapped up the 2012 class. I have one more 5 star D lineman on a silent commitment that I am saving for the last day so what can I say. The 2013 class is shaping up nicely. I sure hope that Richt gets that contract extension.

I really hope New Orleans is doing well. They really need good things to happen after Katrina and the economy …blah, blah, blah.
New Orleans is the biggest dump. If shrimp sandwiches and fried dough is what your city is known for, you’re in big trouble. Anybody that loves that place needs to shower, big time.

Great shot of Suh did you get his autograph or did the street cleaners have to clean that up?

Nice photos. Arkansas-Iowa State just finished. Arkansas played like a good SEC team should. Every SEC team in a bowl game this year played well, except my team – Georgia. UGA ended last season embarrassing the SEC, started this season embarrassing the SEC and ended the year embarrassing the SEC. Inferior coaching has Georgia resembling an ACC team now. Let’s reward them with a new, long term deal.
