Giants were no better vs. winning teams than Falcons

Matt Ryan is only 2-4 vs. winning teams ...

Matt Ryan's Falcons went 2-4 vs. winning teams ...

... but Eli Manning isn't any better at 1-3.

... but Eli Manning's Giants were worse at 1-3.

OK. No more picking on the Falcons for going only 2-4 against teams with winning records this season. It turns out they’re better than at least four other NFL players — five if you go by percentage points and include their opponent Sunday, the New York Giants.

Since I noted the other day that the Falcons (10-6) largely fattened up on mediocre opponents this season while going only 2-4 against winning teams, I thought it would be only fair to break down every team in the NFL playoff field.

It turns out they’re near the middle of the pack. Guess what? Even the Giants, Sunday’s wild card opponent, went only 1-3 (.250) against winning teams this season (beating New England; losing to San Francisco, New Orleans and Green Bay). The Falcons’ 2-4 mark actually factors out to a better winning percentage (.333).

The best teams in the playoffs aren’t a surprise: Green Bay (5-0 against winning teams), New Orleans (6-1) and Baltimore (6-1). Only one among the worst jumps out. You’ll know it when you see it: Denver (1-4), Cincinnati (1-6), New England (0-2) and Detroit (0-5).

The Patriots (13-3) finished tied for the league’s second-best record. But they had the softest schedule among playoff teams, facing only two with winning records (losing to both Pittsburgh and New York). They went 7-1 against losing teams and 6-0 against .500 teams.

Following is a breakdown of the playoff field.

Does it make you feel a little better about the Falcons’ chances?

Team           vs.W   vs.L vs.E Overall
Green Bay      5-0    5-1   5-0    15-1
New Orleans    6-1    6-2   1-0    13-3
Baltimore      6-1    4-2   2-1    12-4
San Francisco  4-1    7-0   2-2    13-3
Houston        4-3    6-2   0-1    10-6
Pittsburgh     5-4    7-0   0-0    12-4
Falcons        2-4    7-1   1-1    10-6
N.Y. Giants    1-3    3-3   5-1    9-7
Denver         1-4    3-2   4-2    8-8
Cincinnati     1-6    7-0   1-1    9-7
New England    0-2    7-1   6-0    13-3
Detroit        0-5    5-0   5-1    10-6

Permit me to point out, that the Falcons would be 4-2 against winning teams, if not for dropped game winning TD passes by their #1 and #2 WRs, in the 1st N.O. saints and the Houston Texans game and would have a 12-4 record.
Also might I add, that if not for a dropped pass by their #1 WR in the 1st Tampa Bay game, the Falcons might by 13-3 this season.

SawThat1nce

January 5th, 2012
4:36 am

The Falcons could have easily been 13-3 this season, and I think that would have won them the NFC South, if my calculations are correct.

Eric C.

SawThat1nce, Last season’s 13-3 record was a reflection of everything falling right (game vs SF, 1st gm vs Saints, 1st gm vs Packers, 2nd game vs Bucs). If those games swung the other way, then you are looking at 9-7 last season. This year…it seems the converse is true with not much 4th quarter magic…e.g., no comeback win vs Bucs in first gm, vs Texans, nor vs Saints in first gm.

“Has JSS EVER been positive about anything?”

Positive is relative. Brent Grimes gets praise. Eric Weems effort and determination gets praise when he is not trying to be a mini-tough guy for a team that has none. Unlike many of you who have cloaked yourself in aura that lying to one’s self is a state of positive good feeling, I live under no allusion of false idols or that they are “more” or “less” in ability. It is kind of like your unimaginative user-name, the “nature boy” wouldn’t settle for being bottom shelf Dollar Tree product knock-off… So why do you accept that in your paid athletic representatives?

NFL is starting to look more like MLB. Pitching and defense get you to the playoffs, but offense during the playoffs wins championships. QB play and defense will get you in, but you better score a LOT to win. Certainly true this weekend. Two good, but not great, defenses. Two very good, to near great, QBs. Two inconsistent offenses. Prediction: the team that scores the most will win. Seriously, the magic formula is no secret. Avoid mistakes (penalties and turnovers.) Take advantage of opponent’s mistakes. Stop the run. Keep the ball away from Victor Cruz. Oh, and tackle. Eli won’t beat you by himself. Of course, neither will Ryan. Should be close. Either way, there are too many holes for either to get past a second rounder. But hope springs eternal. The good news is that Mularkey’s auditioning on a national stage. Like a player in a contract year, you can expect a little extra juice.

as a giants fan, they struggled all year running the ball, and stopping the pass, so white, julio jones, and gonzalez could give them problems, unless they get a good pass rush from tuck, pierre paul, umenyora on matt ryan; i’m looking for a 31-28 type of game coming down to the wire; whoever wins

And Kramer comment just reinforces my point… I don’t care if the Patriots, Green Bay, and etc have “winning records” and suddenly become a fan of those teams… You respect the game, you respect their accomplishments (they’ve proven them selves to be winners on the biggest stage)… This is not the English Premier League, I gave the Falcons 40 years of fan support (18 as a season ticket holder of 3 tickets). Petrino hire ended that for me. The type of fans that coalesced around this team now (as represented by those who blog here especially) just makes me glad I got out when I did… You folks don’t read your own posts…

JSS- It’s okay to be pissed at the Falcons. I have been before to. You don’t have to think back very far though when a playoff appearance was a once in every 5 to 7 year event. I know its the sports writers job to look at the numbers and discuss all the angles and its interesting to discuss, but I think this means little. I am pretty sure Belichick is not sulking in NE because he had the easiest schedule in the NFL. A couple of years back, ESPN’s John Clayton wrote an article on teams chances of making and winning the Superbowl. He noted that conferences that face AFC West and NFC West teams, more than likely will send at least 2 teams to the playoffs and have bye weeks. NFC South played the NFC West last year, thats why we had 3 teams with winning records. AFC North played the NFC West this year, 3 teams are in the playoff (BAL, PIT and CIN) with BAL getting a BYE and NE also getting a BYE because they faced the AFC West. To sum it up, NFL teams should embrace the easy schedule and roll with it. With that said, Schultz good article and now we need to spread the word to everyone, so “NFL experts” can stop talking about our FALCONS as if we are not deserving of a playoff spot.

Since you asked, I was a Falcons fan for 27 years and a Braves fan for 30 years, until they you folks showed your true colors.

It started with the Braves complete makeover from the 1995 world champs team, where players like David Justice, Fred McGrith, Terry Pendleton, etc., and the way they treated Andruw Jones, then the way Vick was treated for reasons we all know.

Therefore, I was brought here to give CHOKE the same support Vick received. I’m a team player……….

The Steelers and Packers won the SB out of those spots, but those teams barely lost their divisions and had defeated their closet rivals during those seasons. And in the case of the Packers, their losses were by 3, 3, 4, 4, 3, and 3 points. They played big on the road and close on the road… Never lost by more than 20 like the Falcons did in New Orleans… The Steelers on the other hand, they lost 3 in a row (one by 7 on the road, one 3 on the road, and 19 in Indy). They subsequently met Indy again in the playoffs and dismantled them. Y’all will take that as negative, it is just not this team’s DNA… Pittsburgh and Green Bay made real changes to get to that point, the Falcons haven’t. For all of his talents, Julio Jones was a sideways move!

The issue so far with this team is that they haven’t adequately addressed issues on the offensive and defensive lines.

It’s not that the players they have are bad, they just aren’t good enough yet to inspire a lot of confidence.

To play this style of defense they need elite pass rushers on the defensive line. They have pretty good DT’s at this point but the DE spot leaves a ton to be desired. Much like the Braves can’t hit, the Falcons can’t hit the QB.

What amazes me is that they think they are teaching us something. I have watched the Falcons for 33 years. I have had season tix a couple of those years and always go to a few games. Guess what…I know the history. I know the team has weaknesses. I don’t need 50 people on these blogs to keep bringing that up.

We have had so few years in the playoffs a FEW of us might like to actually ENJOY this week while we can. We watch Falcons football as a form of RECREATION and entertainment. If we want constant negativity we will go to a news blog.

@ JSS- Okay now you stepped in it. Julio was a sideways move. Are you honestly saying that Jones is not a bigger threat than JENKINS!!!

Don’t quote yardage and numbers to me either. Jenkins had a better year this year than was normal when he was in Atlanta, I get that. But Jenkins does not get the Defenses attention the way Julio has the last three or four weeks.

I bet you a beer that Julio makes a much bigger and more positive impact on this game than Jenkins did in the other two playoff games we have had. Watch the Giants safeties and them come back and lets talk Monday.

Eli is battle tested. He’s shown he can win in the playoffs and in hardcore crunch time at the Super Bowl. He makes great throws under pressure.

Ryan has no playoff wins for a reason. He is flakey under pressure and can’t make big plays when he has to. He is not a downfield threat. His receivers can be big play threats, but that is something else entirely.

Only way the Falcons win is if they grind it out with the run game. But they won’t. They will be impatient and try to get big plays early and fall flat and wind up trying to play catch-up all game. I like Matt Ryan fine, but he isnt an elite QB. He is average at best, and the Falcons are going to be mediocre as long as he is at the helm.

@ PreyDawg…
I had been calling for Jenkins head for 3 years… It is a “sideways move” because “his acquisition” came at the expense of addressing this teams deeper needs. This team’s line play is subpar. You knew you were going to have lose a lineman on both sides. You haven’t drafted an lineman that was eye popping in years. Your two best linemen on both sides of the ball are from other teams development ability. Other teams have found receivers as explosive later, the problem is, you guys think Julio is his self was going to make people open the field. It didn’t happen. They still attack the Falcons the same way. They still dare them to beat them over the top. I’ve said it before, Jones is a very talented individual. But that trio scares no one (except undermanned teams like Indy, Carolina and Tampa), they respect it and game plan for it; but they know what they need to do first, overwhelm that O-Line…

@ PreyDawg………..your welcome………I just call it by what I see on the Football field….Atlanta actually has a very good football team, 3 out of the last 4 can tell a idiot that even if they were teams with losing records. Those 3 they beat had nothing to lose and tried to pull out all the stops to beat the Birds in those games and upset their playoff hopes.

I do give the Saints credit for being ready to play that game on MNF but actually think that long 10-day stretch the Falcons had hurt them somewhat in that ballgame. They just didn’t look like they was ready to play football.

The Falcons play way better football games week in and week out. Don’t let them have long breaks between games because they lose focus and that ” Eye of the Tiger ” attitude. They can put up a better game against the Saints if they are ready to play……….may not beat them but the game would be closer than that one was.

To all of the posters saying the Giants are better than the Falcons…the Giants are also better at beating themselves with numerous stupid penalties and turning the ball over. Talk about the Falcons all you want, but you can’t change the fact that the Falcons are the more solid football team. The Falcons control the football and clock better, don’t suffer from as many penalties as the Giants, and don’t turn the ball over as much.

Keep talking smack…it’s ok, but the fact remains…the Falcons are the better team and if you’re a TRUE Giants fan AND a realist, you already know that.

Regarding Matt Ryan, he is a 1000% improvement over the previous “franchise” QB we had here. Without Ryan, the Falcons would not have accomplished what success they have had over these past four seasons. Go Matty Ice!!!

Now, back on topic. The result of Sunday’s game will depend on whether the Falcons elevate their level of play and maintain that level for four full quarters. Anything less than that simply won’t cut it in the playoffs. You can bet the Giants will step up. Nevertheless, this Atlanta team has a boatload of talent. There is absolutely no reason that it cannot go up to NY and post that first playoff win under the Dimitroff-Smith-Ryan regime.

Makes me feel about the same about the Falcons. They could beat the Giants. I actually think the Falcons are a little better than NY but NY is at home so it’s kind of a pickem. After that, if they win, they’ll have to face one of those teams that beat winning teams. And then the Falcons are up against it. Unlike the AFC where I just can’t make an argument that Denver, Cincinnati, or a banged-up Houston team could advance to the Super Bowl it’s actually possible in the NFC to make a case for any of the teams to get hot, pull an upset, and advance and not sound crazy. But it’s more likely that the Falcons, Lions, and Giants are who we think they are meaning the Lions are one-and-done and either the Falcons or Giants will win one game.

No doubt the Birds are better than their record and the Giants aren’t as good as theirs. The Falcons are peaking at just the right time…………just like Green Bay last year. If we could get the entire team buying into playing every down for 6o minutes we could take this baby home.

Mediocrity continues...

Did you watch the N.O. game? Not sure I’d call the “peaking” at the right time. Gotta put together 4 quarters against a good team first.

Totally agree. This is a game we should win. Time for the Falcons to take a step towards being a team that’s not just satisfied with winning seasons and making the playoffs.

Seattle (7-9) went into MetLife Stadium this year and spanked ‘em. Giants lost to the Redskins (5-11) twice this year. Are we impressed they beat the Cowboys twice? Nope. They beat New England in Gillette Stadium after they were gifted 4 turnovers. 32nd in the rush, 29th in passing defense. Yeah, they’ll be blue alright. Falcons 33 Giants 23

Eric C. @4:56am………Things falling “converse” to the right way in 2011?
I disagree, I think that 3 missed plays were the reason they lost those three games.

I truly hope you are not lumping every single fan on here into your “fans who dont read their own posts,” because some, in fact, do raise valid points without having to piss and moan and can actually post objectively. Some are not so disillusioned as to think Atlanta is the best team in the league or the playoffs. But these other guys, they’re just excited about being back in the post season, and rightfully so. There are 20 other teams in the league that would love to trade places right now. So its OK to be excited about this. However, getting the first win would be nice

To all my fellow Falcon fans who bother READING and more importantly RESPONDING to anything that these folks have to say:

Matt “CHOKE” Ryan and
JSS and
SeenThisB4

Just let it go man for at least the rest of this season. Just STOP IT. Continuing to comment on their comment is so POINTLESS and STUPID given that they only do it to upset you and get a reaction from you.

There is nothing to be gained by it. Your continued responses to their postings shows you (and them) just how STUPID YOU REALLY ARE and HOW SENSITIVE you are. Man UP and Let it Go.

Why bother caring what they say? Really? Is your life so incomplete that you have to carry on a back-and-forth dialog with someone you don’t know, and don’t really care for you OR our team? Just stop it. If this blog had a “ignore” button, and we all “ignored” their post, I doubt they bother posting as much – their thoughts, and comments would be irrelevant to the discussion.

Ya see 1:02 —- My ??? JSS is very astute in knowledge of the game “dont cha NO” —- i happen to think “The wondrous wizard of OZ” could rank up there with the best in this field of trolling in abyss & wealth of what’s called “walking book of knowledge of the game”. However seeing how all i know about ??? JSS is he’s from Canton, lives with Mom (taking care of Mom), i think he hates pawn shops “for some crazy reason, heaven only knows why”, be that as it may. I do want to state this about JSS, I’ve gained “respect” for some of his post since the beginning.

Back to the game of the week —- Go Falcons bring home the bacon boys!!!!!!! Gmen Next

All I know is Matt Stafford and Cam Newton have passed Matt Ryan on the top QB’s list. I don’t say this to criticize Ryan, as he is a quality QB, but if you ranked the top NFC QB’s Ryan is behind Rodgers, Brees, Eli, Stafford, Romo, Cam. Ryan and Vick are about even.

Giants aren’t a good team. Eli is good–and smart. Falcons won’t be able to disguise blitzes. The D is lousy, especially the passing D (if you can protect the QB you will score on their DBs). Falcs can run early and often. Special teams are awful. 28-17 Falcons.

@JSS- Your point is well made. I agree completely about the Line and yes we did give up a TON. We have cap room but I am not sure there is a true road grader guard in Free Agency. And we both know there are very few good left tackles available. So in that way, I have to say, you are correct.

The line is my biggest concern for Sunday as well. I don’t know that we can block the Giants front four. I worry about our yards per carry. We cant win with a bunch of 1 and 2 yard runs on first and second down. That is usually when we go to the spread. Only after we realize we can’t run on first and second down out of our tight formation.

Considering where we are on the O-line, I have called for more running plays out of the 4 wide set. Have you noticed we hardly EVER run out of that set? I also think Jacquizz should get more touches. We dont open holes we sometimes open cracks. He can slip through the crack and break one or two big runs.

Key to this game is Falcons’ OL vs Giants’ DL. Whichever one comes out on top, that’ll win the game.

[...] doesn’t need to project “Hall of Fame” credentials against the Giants. He just can’t kill drives and hopes with turnovers. The Giants generate a strong pass rush [...]

Falcons have the WORST SOV (Strength Of Victory) of ANY playoff team except Cincinnati.. (.375)
Meaning the record of the teams they beat was .375 or 6-10 average recordt.

Ryan is 0-2 in Playoff games… Including a HOME blow-out loss last year as the TOP seed.
He definitelt earns the nickname “Matty Ice” as he is ice cold in playoffs.
Eli Manning has proven his mettle in the clutch time of playoffs and this year
threw more 4th quarter TDs than any QB in HISTORY.

This year, the Falcons are 2-3 outdoors (Thanks to wins over Carolina, Tampa Bay, and Seattle).

They will have to have everything go their way to beat even an average NY Giants team on the road.
Otherwise, you’re looking at a 30-17 loss.

Sorry Falcons fans… another over-hyped season and team.
