Falcons beat another bad team, but can they beat good one?

(UPDATED: 11:30 p.m. The New York Giants defeated Dallas, which means the Falcons will face the Giants next Sunday at 1 p.m.)

If there is one absolute this season about the Falcons, it’s that they know how to wipe their feet on the lampooned and downtrodden. They create excitement for punch-drunk fan bases dreaming of Andrew Luck. They can beat any team that has been considered as an emergency replacement by the Big East.

But can the Falcons win a playoff game and, you know, actually beat somebody good?

They beat Jacksonville. They beat Indianapolis. They beat Carolina twice. They didn’t beat Tampa Bay on Sunday so much as they dodged exploding parts and avoided hyperventilating from laughing. The Falcons led 42-0 after 23 minutes — aided by three turnovers — pulled most of their starters early and somewhat wobbled to the finish line (not that the wobble of backups really matter), winning 45-24.

They made the playoffs. They finished the regular season with a record of 10-6. Not great, given the adjusted standards in Flowery Branch, but certainly not awful.

Still, have you ever bought one of those build-it-yourself desks from a cheap furniture store, and then, seemingly 17 minutes after you’ve tightened the last Swedish screw into pressboard and placed your computer, printer and books on top, one of the legs folded like linguini?

That’s kind of where we’re at with the Falcons. They went 8-3 after a 2-3 start this season. But given who’ve they’ve beaten and who’ve they’ve lost to, it’s fair to wonder if they’re going to turn into limp pasta in the postseason when they’re under more pressure.

Careful about conclusions. The Falcons just annihilated a team that finished the season with a 10-game losing streak. (That’s not a franchise record. Oh, did this postgame cry for a John McKay quote.) It makes you wonder how the Bucs beat the Falcons in Week 3.

Michael Turner, who had struggled of late, rushed for 172 yards and two touchdowns in the first half. (Curtis Compton/AJC)

Michael Turner, who had struggled of late, rushed for 172 yards and two touchdowns in the first half. (Curtis Compton/AJC)

The Falcons’ last four wins came over Minnesota, Carolina, Jacksonville and Tampa Bay, teams that finished with a composite record of 18-46. They went only 1-4 against the NFL playoff field (the only win coming over Detroit).

They went 2-4 against teams that finished with winning records  (Tennessee was the other one), 7-1 against teams with losing records and 1-1 against .500 teams.

You don’t indict a team for beating schleps. But skepticism is completely appropriate.

The question isn’t whether the Falcons have the talent and experience to win a road playoff game over the New York Giants next Sunday. They do. The question is which Falcons’ team will show up.

“People are going to have their doubts about us until we go into the playoffs and do some good things,” tackle Tyson Clabo said. “Just because we feel like we have the talent to do some special things doesn’t mean anything. We have to perform. You can’t just write down the roster and decide who wins from there.”

When Detroit lost to Green Bay Sunday, the Falcons were handed the NFC’s No. 5 seed on a platter, meaning they didn’t have to travel to New Orleans next week. They will still be on the road for the entire playoffs (barring an implausible NFC title match-up with Detroit), but running back Michael Turner offered, “It’s been proven over time that seeds do not matter.”

We know that to be true. The Falcons were the No. 1 seed last season and got drop-kicked by Green Bay.

Quarterback Matt Ryan played less than a half. He stuck around long enough to throw two touchdown passes and establish a new single-season franchise record for passing yardage. Running back Michael Turner also spent the second half reclining, after rushing for 172 yards and two touchdowns (one for 81 yards) on 17 carries.

We witnessed three interceptions by the Falcons’ defense, a pick six by linebacker Curtis Lofton, a sack and forced fumble by John Abraham.

We saw why general manager Thomas Dimitroff believed wide receiver Julio Jones was worth more than a few draft picks. Jones had a 17-yard touchdown catch to make it 14-0. On Tampa’s first ensuing play from scrimmage, Josh Freeman had a pass intercepted by Dominique Franks at the Bucs’ 48. On first down, Ryan fired a pass to Jones near the 15-yard-line. Jones collided with safety Tanard Jackson, made the catch anyway, went down, got up and then pulled defenders with him into the end zone.

Plays like that show us what potential this team has. But if doubts remain, it’s not a mystery way. Not enough highlights have come against good teams.

My guess is as good as yours about this team schultzie. No idea what happens next week. Just glad we dont have to go to new orleans next week….they look like green bay fom last yr.
Pressure the qb and throw the ball to julio a lot. That could equate to a win.

I want the Falcons to win a playoff game. But I swear, our secondary sucks. Dunta Robinson is probably the worst tackler I’ve ever seen. He whiffs far too many times. I can’t believe we pay him so much and get so little from him. Is it just me or does the Falcon defense look like easy pickin’s for any good passing team? I’m afraid that unless the Falcon offense can dominate the time clock, our defense will be shredded. Please, let’s win at least one playoff game.

The Smitty/CHOKE regime has feasted on the bottom dwellers and CHOKED vs the teams
with legit defenses. That’s why they CHOKE in the playoffs. New Orleans proved that last
week.

Still a big achievement when you remember where we were 5 years ago: no stars, QB in the clink, coach leaving for Arkansas … Now, 3 playoff appearances and broke 4 franchise records today. Not bad, I say. I agree that we need a playoff win and take it to the next level. I agree that we need to do way more before we can pat ourselves on the back and feel great. But still, did anyone predict this 5 years ago? Seriously.

This was a weird season. We’re in the playoffs, but it doesn’t feel like we did a whole lot to earn it. It really just feels like we’re in by default.

I’m not going to get my hopes up. Maybe with lower expectations the Falcons will end up pleasantly surprising me. But I’ll believe we can win a big game on a big stage when I see it.

Its a shame to watch the Falcons destroy a losing team as the Jags and jump all over the bench, but when the Saints destroyed them the week before, they really held their heads down—-remember this game when you get destroyed in the playoffs again–you are to need some of these 42 first half points.

keepinitreal – That’s how the Packers must have felt in 1967. They were 9-4-1 and barely made the postseason. The Rams and Colts were 11-1-2 and the latter did not make it. The Packers won against the heavily favored Rams and then won the Ice Bowl, finally crushed the Raiders in the 2nd Super Bowl. So it’s a new slate a this point.

And the Falcons organization is classy enough to not run up the score like the Saints. And I’m not talking about the Falcons game. I’m thinking of when they hung 62 on hapless Indy earlier this year. I think the Falcons could have put 80 on the Yucs today, but Coach Smith has too much class.

If we went 16 and 0 and lost in round one, this season would not be a step forward. That just shows how far Smitty and Ice have brought this team. “Only” going to the playoffs, ask the next great genius coach, Raheem Morris, how much is sucks ONLY going to the playoffs.

However, Smitty has taken us to a new level, and a loss next week would be a bitter disappointment, but if we get that W, we are on our way.

As I said in the pre-game comment section, this game was about momentum and confidence. John Lynch said the same exact thing. P B Orr,

It’s a little different situation. The Packers were defending Super Bowl champs. They knew how to win the big games. The Falcons are still trying to figure that out.

But you’re right that it’s a clean slate. There’s no reason to hold anything back now. Hopefully Mularkey and BVG, especially, will take that message to heart.

We’ve caught a huge break this postseason. We get a first round game against a team that’s our equal or worse. If we win, by playing solid D and eliminating most mistakes (i know – not likely at all), then on to San Fran where we’d get a team sitting in nearly the same seat we were in last year – in over its head.

We have a shot to make it to GB to play in a blizzard. Question is whether we have what it takes to beat the Giants. Doubtful. Sigh.

The franchise was a wreck 4 years ago. Never had back to back winning seasons. Now we have had 4. I would have taken 10-6 going into season especially with opening 5 games. Unfortunately Pack and Saints are at another level. Barring a major injury to a key player with those teams, chances of winning beyond first round are poor. I agree beats being eagles or jets or bears. We are in playoffs. To win against saints or pack we would need a strong running game and play error free. Turner seems incapable of dominating at this point in career. The real question is whether we can fix both lines next year or have peaked and headed other way.

Hi Jeff. I am not happy in any way, shape or form! The Falcon D surrendered 24 points to the Bucs. I said 24 points! That is totally unacceptable and indefensible! Chris “Pick Six” Redman could not even beat out the Valdosta Viking starting QB. What a total loser! The early exit of the offensive starters will become evident this weekend. After the crap the Bucs made the Falcons consume earlier the home guys should have put a minimum of 60 points on the scoreboard. Hey, the Saints damn sure would have! That is the difference between a contender like the Falcons and a pretender like the Falcons. How many more drops did Roddy White have? A dozen? Sure as Hell seemed like it! AMAZING, Jeff! You guys talked about the weak schedule down the stretch like it was God’s right hand reaching down two months ago. And now that they actually BEAT the teams that they were SUPPOSED to beat, you treat it as an omen that all those guys had lossing records! Amazing! You’re really a piece of work! I think that most of what you’re printing now is your attempt to make your pre-season picks sting a little less. You see, this is the thing that gets me…..you and Bradley build everybody up. You guys don’t seem to understand that you’re both sports beat writers. If you could predict games or call seasons, you would be rich and living in Vegas. But invariably, you guys always miss the mark, and then you follow up the misery of your predictions by lambasting everything about the team, what they did, and how they played. Here’s what I want to know….have you or Bradley EVER PLAYED football past the 6th grade? Seriously?! I doubt it very much. Jeff….maybe you should write for the metro section. At bare minimum, maybe you should show a little support….instead of writting crap trying to make yourself look better after all that pre-season crap you were spouting.

awesompt,

Pretty sure I have not thrown out a single stat other than Stafford threw for 500+ today, and that Matty only threw 9 passes, which was not at all bashing him by any means. I was stating, plain and simple, that he threw only 9 passes, and if you can argue that then be my guest. I, unlike half the people on here, love Ryan as the QB of our team, and i have not at all joined the negativity wagon that most jump on when we lose. So to say im trying to be an expert or say I’m no true Falcon fan is pure idiocy. Especially when trying to argue that none of us could have done what Ryan did this year. Well, no crap, because last i checked I, nor you, or anyone else on this blog is a pro QB. And I never said he did a bad job this year, I enjoy watching him mature as a QB and a classy person. So please, feel free to think that every objective opinion is a personal attack on yourself if you’d like, but do it somewhere else where you are less likely to make yourself look foolish

His toughness is not in question, but our Offensive Coordinator sure is

7 of the 13 500 yard passing games, have been losses, including Stafford’s. Norm van Brocklin’s record-setting 554 yard game was not – a 54-14 win against the soon to be extinct New York Yanks on opening day. Amazingly, van Brocklin was platooned that year with Bob Waterfield, who was almost as good.

Ain’t about running, it’s about understanding that certain paths to the Super Bowl are preferable to others. But you gotta be careful what you wish for at the same time. Look at Arizona and Green Bay very recently. Seedings don’t mean squat really.

I’m confident because we have balance and playmakers on offense and a defense that isn’t any worse than those in GB, NO, DET, or NYG. My fear is another vanilla un-inspired gameplan from Mularkey the Moron. If we just went no-huddle (i.e. – Matt Ryan calling the plays instead of Mularkey) the whole game, then I really think we got a chance against anybody anywhere. But we all know that ain’t gonna happen, so let’s just hope Mularkey gets strep throat and can’t talk next weekend.

Fairly certain Eli makes his living playing football in New York, in the winter, in an open air stadium, where he’s used to playing in the cold by now. Ryan, on the other hand, has made his home in Atlanta during the winter, where he plays in a dome…..which is never below 68 degrees. Now tell me, how is Ryan in his element playing in a cold outside game, which he has done maybe twice since his days at BC. And while youre at it, tell me how “all” the Falcons players are from ATL. The Giants make mistakes and can be beaten if the Falcons force those mistakes. ohhhYeah, you just lost me there, dude. Ryan is from Philly and played his home games in Boston. Don’t know if you’ve been to Philly or Boston during the winter, but it’s pretty damn cold (see some of those Patriots games past couple of years?). The point is that these are professional. The cold, per se, isn’t the issue. The style and composition of the team is the issue. If it’s a Turf Show Rams-like team built for domes, then playing in crap conditions in cold January is a problem. The Falcons are actually better served outside where running games are critical, and play-action pass works particularly well. I don’t believe the Giants would have much of an advantage if the weather is bad.

NYG are a beatable team. If they can slow down Tuck and Pierre-Paul on defense, and then stop Cruz, Jacobs, and Bradshaw on offense, they will have a great chance. Falcons can stop the run and make Eli throw the bulk of the game. That would but the birds in a better position to win.

Whew! Glad we backed into the playoffs after we leaped in last year only to get blown out against the Pack. At least we don’t have to go back to the ‘Big Easy’ I mean New Orleans and have Drew Brees and those Cajuns filled with fire water open up another jar of that ‘whip butt’ like they did a couple of weeks ago on MNF. We can beat up on the Bucs and Panthers but those Saints are in a different league from us. No sir fellow dirty birds, those aren’t your daddy’s Saints that we used to beat up on. 10 out of the last 12 they have won! Don’t need to go back down there until next year. Those Saints are putting up unreal numbers down there. What a great team! Wish we could be just like them here in ‘dirty bird land.’ Speaking of numbers, I wish that I could be in that number when the Saints go marching in to that big bowl game in Indianapolis in February. Child us dirty birds ain’t going nowhere but home to watch after the Giants do us in. I love the Falcons and was at the game yesterday. I loved the way we whipped up on the Bucs but I don’t see us advancing past the Saints or Packers, but I do see us capable of beating the other three, even San Francisco. Matt will get his first playoff win, but that’s it. Then hopefully the OC walks and Smitty takes over the defense while hiring someone capable of bringing the offense together, somebody like Norv. But until then, let’s be ready to get disappointed again. Good write-up and Happy New Year.

As I’ve said at least once a week for a while now, I don’t care about the Falcons going to the playoffs. All I want is at least ONE playoff win. The Falcons needs to beat the Giants. If they beat the Giants and get a playoff win, then I will know that there’s something building here. If they don’t beat the Giants, then I vote that Arthur Blank should blow this team up and start over.

I personally think that the Falcons are way better than the Giants. This should be a Falcons win. This should be a good victory here, if this team can play at their potential. If not, it going to be a terrible off-season if they don’t blow it up. (And when I say, “Blow Up”, I’m talking about only Julio Jones, Brent Grimes and Mike Smith remaining. Everyone else can go away.)

Can I tell you why I REALLY just want a playoff win, at least? Because of only two words: Michael Vick. Seriously. Mike Vick is still here, even though he’s in Philly. There are still people who are comparing Matt Ryan to Michael Vick and how the last time the Falcons won a playoff game, Vick was the quarterback. 8 YEARS AGO!

And there are STILL people going around talking about dog-fighting. And that Vick was the worst quarterback ever. And that he’s just a “THUG” (which is a racially-charged code for the N-Word.) Meanwhile, I’m sitting here thinking that even though the Philadelphia Eagles are not even in the playoffs, they will probably win a Super Bowl before the Falcons do. And that’s sad because the Falcons beat bad teams but can’t win against the good teams.

Take the Saints, for example. The Falcons can and should beat the Saints. The Saints are vulnerable, but they are a good football team. And we lay eggs against good football teams. Why is that? I think that it goes down to one thing: Heart.

It’s simple: Against bad football teams, we are sure tacklers. Against good teams, our tackling goes away. That is a tell-tale sign of mental lapses during games. When the competition is strong, we wilt. That’s a huge problem.

So I’m not happy. I’m not all giddy about going to the playoffs. So what about going to the playoffs? What I want is a playoff win!

Because with a playoff win, the Falcons can be the Falcons. I think we can set our expectations properly. It can finally stop the Vick stuff and finally start looking to the future instead of longing for the glories of the past.

I’m getting a little tired of this crap. “Oh the Falcons can’t beat good teams.” That’s simply not true. The Falcons beat Detroit at home when Detroit was undefeated and favored. And that was with Megatron and Bigfoot (Suh) playing for them. Meanwhile the Saints and the Chiefs both saw there 1 squads get beat by sub-par teams, the Rams and the Chiefs respectively. The truth is that there is no team on either side of this playoff picture that these guys can’t beat. Do you think Reheem Morris told his guys to rollover yesterday? All of them were fighting for their jobs and they got beat because the Falcons did what they needed to do consistently to beat them. This article is a waste of inik because anybody can beat anybody in the NFL, it professional football. The last New Orleans game only proved that its a bad idea to take Christmas Day off pound down the vittles and drop 1300ft in altitude to play football. These next 3 victories really won’t do very much to give the falcons respect. I can already hear Saints fans saying But they didn’t beat the Saints! ditto pack fans. And I could care less. This is a good football team and I am happy for them.

If Turner can run the ball, The Falcons have a chance to win in NY. The Line opened Giants +3.. considering its in NY, thats the odds makers saying they think the only advantage NY has is its in NY. That said. Justin Tuck is Healthy, Osi Umenyora is playing, Jason Pierre-Paul in playing, and Mathias Kiwinuka is there. And they all looked REALLY ANGRY against the Cowboys. With the Giants, Alot of the time theres no DT, they line up 4 Defensive Ends, Pass rushers who are strong as bulls and fast as greesed snot, and send them on down after down. So if Turner cant run the ball decently to back them off a lil.. Matt is going to have a long freegin day.

I can guarantee one thing next week! The Giants will NOT slap 50 points on our heads like the Saints would have done! Believe it or not, this is a WINNABLE playoff game for us! The Giants are seriously flawed, just like us. They can’t defend the pass, they can’t stop the run, they make stupid mistakes at inopportune times….they fumble, they throw interceptions. The ONLY thing they do well is rush the passer on occasion. Our running game can negate that pass rush…if it’s working. Right on Kimberly. Plus it appears the Giants are finally getting healthy and as the announcers so aptly said last night, the make-shift offensive line required by injuries is now starting to look good with the chemistry that only experience playing together can produce. So what it appears to me to boil down to is Eli – I’ve been watching the Giants ever since Coughlin, a family friend from his playing days at Syracuse, took over. And Eli is either very good or very bad. The Giants win or lose depending on which Eli shows up. If he’s handling pressure this year better than ever before as the announcers’ opined, then we are really in tough shape. There is no better pass rush in either league than the Giants. Big, big test for the first playoff game. It worries me, too.

It doesn’t matter what Raheem Morris told his team, the Bucs are terrible this year. They have no playmakers. You supposed to beat the Bucs badly. Who was impressed with that win? I’m not.

As a matter of fact, I’m not impressed with ANY of the Falcons regular season wins. If you want to impress someone, win a postseason game. That would impress me and make me feel like those regular season games meant something. If not, it would be just another “One-and-done” year and the Falcons will be no closer to winning the Super Bowl from last year.

How should someone try to determine how good a team is? It is simple: look at how it has played over the sixteen game season. Using this objective standard, the Falcons should not go deep into the playoffs. They have yet to dog up a good team, and the debacles with Green Bay and New Orleans really show how this team does under the gun. I have no faith in this bunch. They only play well against inferior opponents; put a good team up against them and they just collectively fold. Want an aberation? (Mike Smith’s gem). The aberation would be for the Falcons to beat a few good teams in a row, and they certainly must do it now or they will be watching the playoffs like the rest of us…in the stands or on tv . Oct. 28, 1962 – Y.A. Tittle#, New York Giants vs. Washington Redskins
27 of 39 for 505 yards and 7 TDs

Since 1980 is the real difference when they changed the chuck rule and illegal contact rules

Dec. 26, 1982 – Vince Ferragamo, Los Angeles Rams vs. Chicago Bears
30 of 46 for 509 yards and 3 TDs

Oct. 13, 1985 – Phil Simms, New York Giants vs. Cincinnati Bengals
40 of 62 for 513 yards and 1 TD

Oct. 23, 1988 – Dan Marino#, Miami Dolphins vs. New York Jets
35 of 60 for 521 yards and 3 TDs

Dec. 16, 1990 – Warren Moon#, Houston Oilers vs. Kansas City Chiefs
27 of 45 for 527 yards and 3 TDs

Nov. 10, 1996 – Boomer Esiason, Arizona Cardinals vs. Washington Redskins*
35 of 59 for 522 yards and 3 TDs

Nov. 5, 2000 – Elvis Grbac, Kansas City Chiefs vs. Oakland Raiders
39 of 53 for 504 yards, 2 TDs

Nov. 19, 2006 – Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints vs. Cincinnati Bengals
37 of 52 for 510 yards and 2 TDs

Dec. 20, 2009 – Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Green Bay Packers
29 of 46 for 503 yards and 3 TDs

Sept. 12, 2011 – Tom Brady, New England Patriots vs. Miami Dolphins
32 of 48 for 517 yards and 4 TDs

January 1, 2012 – Matthew Stafford, Detroit Lions vs. Green Bay Packers
36 of 59 for 520 yards and 5 TDs

the Falcons secondary may cost them the game . That and a lack of a pass rush. gotta get pressure on Manning or he will pick secondary apart. Think about what Brees and Rodgers will do to them, oh i forgot we dont have to think we know. until defense is fixed this is still just an average team.. Not trying to be a hater ,, Falcon fan for over 25 yrs. but this same old story is getting really old. This defense will make Eli look like an Elite QB..

The Falcon team that came out in the first half yesterday (yes, I know who the opponent was) can play with anyone, even the Saints.

Frankly, and I know I’m in the extreme minority–if not the only person on the planet–but I think going back to New Orleans would have been to our advantage. We know them, we hate them, and having that azz whooping fresh in our minds would have been to our advantage.

I think the elements could be tough to overcome in New York…remember the Eagles/Falcons NFC Championship Game? However, this time we have a real, professional QB to compete…not a RB with an inaccurate, strong arm!

We may not win, but we WILL compete and this WILL be a close and hard fought game!

As a lifelong and long-suffering (somewhat redundant, I know) Falcons fan, I’m excited that the Falcons are in the playoffs. However, like others have said, they need to win this “win-able” (sp?) playoff game to take the next step and validate what they have accomplished so far. The Giants are a real test, especially playing at their stadium, but it is good not to have to open against, say, the Packers. We can build some confidence and then will be prepared to take on whoever we might face.

Congrats on another good year. Moving up means blocking and tackling and confidence and fighting for footballs like Mr. Jones does….in the NFL teams build and good teams move up on these things…the rest are just part of the league and they are just there but not for long..the ones who stay there do not depend upon always having the most talented QB but on having a good QB and a team that blocks and tackles and wins…

There’s little doubt in my mind you are a smallish (physically and emotionally), insecure, and angry man who thinks of himself as the “Jeff Schultz Blog Alpha Dog.” Sadly, Jeff allows you to constantly demean anyone you choose. I guess he likes you for some bizarre reason. Maybe it is your initials? Maybe your initials are identical to his? Maybe “JSS” is actually…?

I want the Falcons to win (of course, duh) but I certainly do not expect them to beat the Giants. Both teams have ground and air weapons, but Manning is a better passer/playmaker and a more proven winner than Ryan at this point and the Giants figure to wreak havoc in the trenches. Face it, the Falcons have regressed significantly on the o-line this year, the pass rush disappears for long stretches, they get overmatched physically and burned by big receivers, and they are susceptible to being gashed in the running game. Giants are equipped to capitalize on the Falcons weaknesses; Giants win, 34-23.

What do the Falcons need to win these games? First round caliber contributions from Sam Baker and Peria Jerry. Add Pro-Bowl or near-Pro-Bowl contributions from these two high draft picks and the Falcons would be competing with the big boys.

The Falcons are a good football team. They become great when each and every player gives everhthing he’s got every single play. Not all our Birds play like that. They have got to want it bad and it just may be that we are satisfied with “good” play, not great. I want to know who cares about that hardware that comes with championship football. When they do they’ll play better using what’s between their ears. You got to want it bad. They’ll need that to get past the Blue Giants.

There are matchups that favor the Falcons vs. Giants next week, and Giants are as schizophrenic as the Falcons when it comes to inconsistent play.
But then we come to the matchup of the Giants defense front with those quick athletic pass rushers against the Falcons O-line. better hope we can run block, develop a screen game & work quick throws to Gonzales & Julio. Because Matt Ryan will NOT have time to progress through his reads in their normal passing scheme.
Time for Mike Mularkey to show if he’s really the creative genius some people including himself think he is. Ryan could end up like an upside down popsicle planted in the meadowlands turf.
On the plus side, maybe Suh will dismember Drew Brees after the whistle and there goes the degenerate team from Louisiana out of the playoffs. Plus Green Bay now has a quarteback controversy to worry about!

Greg Mendel

The number one challenge for the Falcons right now isn’t winning a playoff game. It’s figuring out why the team was so inconsistent in 2011. I still think the Julio Jones deal was an acceptable calculated risk that will pay dividends for years to come. But I also think the Falcons were hoping for a greater immediate impact that didn’t happen this season, because facets of the team they thought they could rely on (the OL, for example) became unreliable.

This team is still developing, and despite (yawn) another winning season and a playoff berth, I’m guessing Falcons management was surprised that weaknesses and inconsistency showed up in areas where they weren’t expected. The challenge will be to identify and solve those problems.

These are the Atlanta Falcons. Never in all the years before the current regime could fans honestly believe the team had a legitimate chance of beating any opponent on game day. I wouldn’t bet much money on the Falcons if they were up against Green Bay, New Orleans or New England next Sunday. But I wouldn’t bet a lot of money against them, either. Even with their weaknesses and inconsistency, they aren’t the Dysfunctional Smith Family hobby anymore.

3) Don’t get beat with the big play

Detroit has the weapons to beat New Orleans……………obviously Detroit is a much stronger opponent than was Seattle last year. Vegas implied final score is NO 34 Detroit 24 but the game could change on a turnover or 2…………Detroit is 3rd in the NFC at +13, NO -4.

Recap 2010: Remember when the Saints got stopped on 4th and 1 on their own 30 yard line in the 3rd quarter against Seattle. Just dang.

SEATTLE — Matt Hasselbeck threw four touchdown passes and Marshawn Lynch scored on an electrifying 67-yard touchdown run in the final minutes to lead the Seattle Seahawks to an improbable 41-36 victory over the defending Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints in the opening round of the playoffs.

The Seahawks (8-9) came into Saturday’s game as the first division winner with a losing record, yet pulled off one of the biggest upsets in NFL playoff history — with authority.

The Seahawks held a 34-20 early in the fourth quarter before Drew Brees looked ready to lead the Saints (11-6) on one of their patented comebacks. But Lynch broke about a half-dozen tackles for his TD with 3:22 left as Seattle finished off the Saints.

Vick apologized to his fans, after he lied that is. Why don’t you accept his apology and attempt to make intelligent input on a sports blog. Don’t you want to go on the Eagles blog?

Atlanta fans supported Vick until he flipped us off which meant a lot more then than what we understood. Though I wanted the prototypical QB Schaub under center Vick was damn fun to watch. Green is my favorite color, what’s yours?

Now if Ice misses the playoff 2 years in a row, and then gets busted doing something illegal, I would say it very well might be time to get a new QB….And I would support that new QB.

So there, sorry to spoil your image of me.

Matt Ryan 4177 yards passing, 29 TD’s, 12 INT, 92.2 rating, 61.3% completion rate.
And didn’t play in what would be considered a full game not playing the second half against Jacksonville and Tampa Bay.
8th in the league in rating
8th in yards (6 behind Romo for 7th and didn’t play a full game)

Oh let’s talk Defense. Atlanta ranked 12th in total defense, the NY Giants 27th

Interesting breakdown for Playoffs – Team Stats: (NOTE: Total Team Stats only and NOT broken down by how they did against specific teams.)

Teams I think most fear to play:
1) Packers: Great Offense – Terrible Defense
2) Saints: Great Offense – Terrible Defense
3) Pats: Great Offense – Terrible Defense

Your expected Playoff Teams:
1) Pittsburgh: Great Defense (as usual) – OK offense
2) Ravens: Great Defense – Less than OK offense

Others:
1) Detroit: Very good Offense – Not so good Defense (Fell from beginning of season)
2) Giants: Good Offense – Not good Defense (But getting healthy??)
3) Falcons: Good Offense – Good Defense (Offense slightly better than D)
4) 49ers: Great Defense – Not good Offense
5) Bengals: Not good Offense – Very good Defense
6) Texans: Good Offense (missing Schaub now though) and Great Defense
7) Broncos . . … who cares:)

This is what I don’t understand.

In 2007 The Falcants were 4-12

In 2007 The Ravens were 5-11

I keep hearing the Falcants fans saying the Ravens win playoff games because of
their great defense, but one year before Flacco arrive, that same defense only won 5 games.

The Ravens started over from a horrible 2007 season just like the Falcants, so you have
to look at the quarterbacks for each team, rebuilding in 2008.

No more excuses, both teams were horrible in 2007. You need to face the fact that
CHOKE is not a leader and not INTELLIGENT.

Flacco may not be a super star, but he doesn’t lose games that matter. He doesn’t
have safeties in the playoffs. He doesn’t throw a pick 6 before halftime when the game
is still within reach.

CHOKE is a BUST :)

The depth the New Orleans Saints accumulated at running back is looking more important than ever as the team gets ready to enter the playoffs.

For a lot of teams, news like the reports that rookie running back Mark Ingram will have toe surgery and miss the postseason would be devastating. For the Saints, it’s not that big a deal.

That’s a big difference from last season, when the Saints had a bunch of injuries and basically ran out of running backs in the postseason. That was a major reason New Orleans lost to Seattle in the postseason.

But this time around is totally different. Even without Ingram, the Saints have plenty of depth and versatility in the backfield.

They have three healthy running backs in Darren Sproles, Pierre Thomas and Chris Ivory. Sproles is the speed back and also is a big threat as a receiver out of the backfield.

Ingram mainly had been used as a power back. But Thomas and Ivory are capable of sharing that role.

If the Saints have to play an outdoors game in bad weather in San Francisco or Green Bay, the running game could be more important than ever. With Sproles, Thomas and Ivory, the Saints won’t miss Ingram all that much.

I’ll be so glad when this season is over. I’m sick to death of hearing how we lost to Green bay last year. Didn’t other teams lose in the playoffs? How ’bout New Orleans losing to a 7-9 team>

It is quit simple, if Flacco is better than Ryan due to playoff since, Dalton is better than Cam, due to him getting his team to the playoffs. You guy just hate it when I use your own logic to make you look like idiots. It is fun.

Who said Cam was better? That’s your conscience haunting you :)

Just because Cam set the record for passing for a rookie and other records, I never said he
was better. You just did.

Hating on the Saints in a FAILCANTS blog is funny….I would be focused on the beat down you are about to receive by the Giants….it will be like clubbing baby seals for the G-men….pity…

The giants aren’t that good—Atl should be able to beat them by 10+. Ryan will light up their weak secondary and the angry falcons D will shut down manning.

I remember way too many times, that the Falcons looked like the Bucs in the last game of the year with their bags already packed with a soon to be fired coach after 3 seasons (or a punished GM annoited the interim coach, i.e. Pat Peppler). This is much better; but I do understand those wanting more.

I’m just not sold that we are as talented as we think we are. We absoutely have to do something about our pass rush or we are going to get killed.

I’m also much more comfortable with Svitek rather than Baker (who has either regressed or has a worse injury than indicated)

[...] Falcons have talent. But they are 0-2 in the playoffs under this regime and they’ve struggled against good teams this season. To succeed in this postseason, they’ll need to win on the road, in the cold and/or difficult [...]

[...] I noted the other day that the Falcons (10-6) largely fattened up on mediocre opponents this season while going only 2-4 against winning teams, I thought it would be only fair to break [...]

I agree with Dawg48. Past a point, we beat enough teams to make it here. If we blow it, yes, it’s going to suck. So relish right now, my friends.
