NEW ORLEANS — After lunch with D-Led at Mother’s — always my first stop in New Orleans — I’m ready for the afterthought of this road trip: a football game. (Sorry, but everything takes a back seat to food here.)
The byproduct of two straight wins and a few NFC playoff contenders collapsing around them has left the Falcons in a comfortable position going into tonight’s game against the New Orleans Saints: They’ve already clinched a postseason birth for the third time in four seasons.
There's always a line at Mother's.
But is winning that NFC South that implausible?
Three things need to happen for the Falcons to win the South and clinch a home playoff game: 1) They need to win tonight. (The last four meetings between the teams have been decided by a field goal, with two going into overtime, so an upset wouldn’t be monumental); 2) The Falcons need to win next week’s regular season finale at home against Tampa Bay. (Not a problem. The Bucs have lost nine straight); 3) New Orleans needs to lose next week against Carolina. (The Saints will be favored, but the Panthers have won four of their last five and have a high-scoring offense.)
In that scenario, the teams would finish tied at 11-5 overall but the Falcons would get the edge because of a better division record (4-2 vs. 3-3). So it’s possible they can pull it

off. But winning in the Superdome won’t be easy, especially with quarterback Drew Brees playing like the league’s MVP (16 touchdowns, zero interceptions in the last five games, 24 TDs and 3 interceptions in the last eight).
At least the Falcons know they’ve already clinched at least a wild card playoff berth, the result of Green Bay’s win over Chicago Sunday night.
If the playoffs opened today, the Falcons (NFC’s sixth seed) would face the Saints (third seed) in the playoffs. If the Falcons finish ahead of Detroit for the top wild card spot (fifth seed), they will travel to the NFC East champion, which will be the winner of next week’s Dallas-New York Giants game. If they win the division, they could wind up hosting Detroit. There’s still a chance New Orleans finishes with the No. 2 seed and

draws a bye, leaving the Falcons to travel to San Francisco.
For now, the Falcons are focused only on trying to play four quarters against the Saints as well as they played the last six against Carolina and Jacksonville.
Some obvious keys tonight: 1) Turnovers (it’s notable the Saints’ defense has only 13 takeaways, the fewest in the league; 2) Don’t waste red zone possessions, as was the case the last time the teams met; 3) Get some semblance of a pass rush on Brees, at least forcing him to move off his spot; 4) Pound the Saints’ defense with the run, using up clock and keeping Brees on the sideline.
The Falcons also get cornerback Brent Grimes back after a three-game absence, which should help against a quarterback who’s about to break the NFL’s single-season passing record (Brees’ 4,780 yards trails Dan Marino’s record of 5,048 by 268).
OK, that’s enough. I’ll turn it over to you now. Call me crazy (not the first time, I’m sure) but I like the Falcons’ chances tonight. They seem particularly up for this game. We’ll see. I’m here to serve, at least until I have to start banging out the game column.

Been a Falcon fan for 35 years and have talked myself into optimism many times when there was no rational evidence to support the Falcons.
Not feeling it this time around. The Falcons are pretty good but they have an absolute ceiling. Against the elite QBs they have no answer. They’ve lost 9 of the last 11 to the Saints (would be 10 of 11 if NO hadn’t missed the chip shot in OT last year).

Love your stuff. However, please defend Darryl Ledbetter’s work. He is by far the worst NFL beat writer in the business. His stuff is consistently littered with typos. He provides no useful analysis or insight other than to post injury reports off the team website or copy and paste press conference transcripts. To make matters worse, he deletes any post that calls out his poor coverage.

The falcons will win this game if they succeed in 2 areas. First, red zone offense. We need td,s instead of fg’s. Let’s remember that the Falcons should have won the last game in regulation.They had numerous opportunities around the 10-12 yard line and couldn’t get it done. But the BS call on Lofton early kept a drive alive; And the fact that Babineaux just got tackled by the guard which prevent a sack on Brees on the touchdown pass – well… The reality is – the league wants Brees to break the Marino record on MNF… So – it’s easy to tell the officials ‘let the offenses play’ – as that fits into the league dynamic. @MTSeats – really? Payton is probably doing as good a coaching job as anyone in the league – certainly with play-calling. Gregg Williams as a pretty good coordinator. Smith’s problem is he has been to wedded to BVG and Mularkey. If he can’t cut the strings with those two – I’d agree that he will have a problem next year. Oh- and TD needs to take a little heat for the Duata signing. That turns out not to be a good deal.

Willie Mo and Grimes playing well…Grimes should never had been matched up with Graham in that situation…I blame scheme & coaching for that. Would have rather seen a time out burned there.
The one thing you could not do is give up a scoring drive just before half, and then they get it right back again. Could get out of hand.
But, I’ll say again, this game matters little. Pretty much a done deal the Falcons will be the 5 and play the Giants/Cowgirls winner. Worry about the Saints if it matters later.

You really have to credit the Saints…no team is going to beat them in the dome this time of the year. The Falcons will have a very unfortunate draw if the Lions win next week…our best hope for winning a playoff game is for SF to lose next week and have NO in the 2 seed.

The really bad thing is that we don’t have enough quality draft picks to build the D. We are not going anywhere with our D or our conservative offense play calling. Not sold on Smith, Van Gorder or Mularkey. They can’t turn the corner. Too much talent on this team to live in mediocrity every year.

Got to get the Saints off the field on 3rd down. 8 for 8 is pathetic. There has been some home cooking with the refs. The lats TD there was an obvious hold at the point of attack by Brees and wasn’t called. Julio Jones has been hit early twice and no interference called. Reggie Kelly is speared and not called. Like the announcers said, if Lofton’s hit was a 15-yarder, that one was obviously one too.

Hey John, been watching this for a long… time. Was at the ‘78 playoff game against the Eagles. The Smith family were worthless as owners. I think Blank really wants a winner, and is willing to pay, but he’s been blinded by the Pats org. At this point there should be improvement in all phases of the game, sorry, I simply don’t see it.

Observations from the first half:
1) The Falcons are fighting the refs as much as the Saints. The call against Lofton that extended the second Saints drive was terrible, and pretty much secured the ensuing touchdown for them. The helmet hit to Kelly nearly snapped his spine, but didn’t get called; even the announcers were dumbfounded as to how the refs couldn’t call that after the Lofton penalty. And, like some other Atlanta penalties, it came at a critical time that either extended a drive for the Saints or killed one for the Falcons.
2) The announcers “just can’t say enough about Drew Brees”. Blah blah blah, yadda yadda yadda. Please, enough already; they’re probably up there lighting candles and bowing down to his image off camera.
It doesn’t bode well that the Saints get the ball first in the second half with a two-score lead. The Falcons are likely looking at a wild card and a return to the Superdome in a couple of weeks. If there is any silver lining it’s that no team really wants to have to face another three times, much less try to complete a sweep of those three games. The memory of this game will be fresh in both teams’ mind…and it could make a playoff rematch a game to remember.

@MTseats – Ok… Fair comment on the Smith’s. I’d also agree that at this point the oft spoken of ‘process’ should be yielding better results. Thus – my position – if (when) they don’t make noise in playoffs again – it’s time to turn over some tables. Maybe Jacksonville will interview Mularkey. And Smith realizes that Spagnulo is a better DC option. However – you could live in Cleveland;

Our O-line is just terrible. The main reason why we can’t run the ball. Tyson Clabo didn’t deserve the money we gave him. TD has done pretty good at drafting but his free agent decisions are terrible. Didn’t sign Harvey Dahl who was our main run blocker but signed this weak RT.
