(UPDATED: 1:03 a.m.)
NEW ORLEANS — So much for the mystery.
There’s no need to wonder how heavily to weigh six consecutive dominating quarters against Carolina and Jacksonville. As it turns out, it means only that the Falcons are better than Carolina and Jacksonville — neither of whom they’ll be facing in the playoffs.
They’re not as good as New Orleans. They’re certainly not as good as Green Bay. It remains to be seen if they’re as good as anybody in the playoff field (although they did beat Detroit. But the Falcons won’t be playing them, either.)
Pecking order was firmly established Monday night. The Falcons got boat-raced by New Orleans 45-16 at the Superdome. At least, that was the score the last time anybody looked up.
“I think it’s an aberration,” coach Mike Smith said when asked what this says about the state of his team.
He had better hope so. The Falcons just suffered their worst loss ever under Smith. The 29-point deficit was even bigger than last season’s playoff loss to Green Bay (48-21).
Some might have been upset that the Saints poured it on at the end. (Drew Brees threw his fourth touchdown pass of the game with 2:51 left, prompting Saints coach Sean Payton to later alibi that he was just trying to get Brees the single-season passing yardage record on that drive.)
But when a team gets body-slammed like this, it has nothing to whine about.
The Falcons didn’t merely get beat by a seemingly faster and more talented team. They got punched in the mouth. They lost both lines of scrimmage. They had receivers laid out in the New Orleans secondary, and their own defense didn’t reciprocate. They got outcoached. They didn’t have an answer for a New Orleans offense that went over 300 yards by halftime or for quarterback Drew Brees, who just made them look silly most of the night.
They gave up a 92-yard kickoff return and allowed a touchdown on a 30-yard fumble return after Julio Jones found himself with an excess of thumbs. So they spread the agony around.
This all happened with quite a bit on the line, not the least of which was a slim chance to rally and win the NFC South.
“It’s pretty embarrassing the way we played,” linebacker Curtis Lofton said.
“I don’t even know what this means — I don’t have a clue,” wide receiver Roddy White said.
This doesn’t mean the Falcons are incapable of winning a first-round playoff game over Dallas, New York or San Francisco. But they have beaten only two teams all season that currently have winning records (Detroit and Tennessee), and this performance by players and coaches leaves nobody with any sense of comfort.
There’s also this: If things fall just right (or wrong), the Falcons will be coming back to New Orleans in two weeks for the playoffs. Sleep well, Brian VanGorder.
After consecutive wins over Carolina and Jacksonville, the Falcons had started to believe they could go on an improbable playoff run from a wild-card position this season, just like the Green Bay Packers did last season. But this game provided no reassurance of that.
Smith again: “I felt like we had a good week of preparation. I didn’t see this coming. We didn’t play Atlanta Falcons football and the scoreboard indicates that.”
What the scoreboard indicated was that this defense still can’t handle offenses with an elite quarterback. The only thing the first half gave the Falcons were bad flashbacks of Aaron Rodgers and the Packers’ offense, ripping them apart in January.
The Saints led 21-10 at halftime. They would’ve had four touchdowns in four possessions, but one would-be score went off Jimmy Graham’s hands in the end zone, was volleyballed by William Moore and fell like manna from heaven into the hands of Falcons defensive back Dominique Franks for an interception. So much for the Falcons’ first-half defensive highlights.
When Brees stepped back to pass, the Falcons’ secondary looked like somebody had kicked an ant hill. The Falcons rarely pressured Brees, rarely blitzed and, when they did, they got burned. Brees threw for 230 yards on only four possessions and New Orleans totaled 306 yards in offense.
There is your reality check about the Falcons’ defense in game No. 15.
Moving the ball wasn’t an issue early. The Falcons’ drove to a field goal and a touchdown on their first two possessions. But when they stalled, New Orleans kept going. As much as the Falcons fashion themselves as an explosive offense, they’re not nearly at the level of New Orleans or Green Bay.
The defense’s only hope against opponents at this level is to punch them in the mouth. But the Falcons were throwing hooks at air Monday night. In the first half, Brees moved the Saints 84 yards in 3 minutes and 28 seconds, 81 yards in 3:59 and 80 yards in 1:55.
You could almost hear defenders yell in unison, “Which way did he go?”
When New Orleans took a 28-10 lead in the third quarter on a 24-yard touchdown pass from Brees to Robert Meachem, chants of “MVP, MVP,” went up in the Superdome crowd.
Nobody in white jerseys would cast a dissenting vote.
The Falcons were looking for a sign that they could do something special in the postseason. Instead, they got smacked with a reality check. Barring an unexpected mutation, they’re nowhere nearly good enough for that.

There is no way Green Bay will lay down against the Lions on their home field while having a bye week coming up and Rogers going for 5000 yards and an MVP trophy, which he will win.

Troll seepage > evil empire + MChokeR + dog crap.
You folks that are killing Matt (not counting the usual previous lifeless trolls) did not watch the same game. Our defensive personnel is the issue, as in CAN’T STOP ANYTHING! Offensive line is the 2nd problem followed closely by running back failures, but the Defense is losing these games. Ryan is not losing these games. Next year we go to the free agent trough for OL, DE, and DB. Who knows what leftover we get with our 2nd Rounder in April, but it won’t even be a bandaid on this defensive sore without some free agents coming to camp.

Can’t figure out why a select few are calling out DRob and he didn’t even have a bad game. That interception was a quite a play. I’m not saying he’s a shutdown corner, I’m just saying aside from our D-Line not getting any pressure on Brees and missing sack opportunities and some terrible 3rd and long defensive calls, the corners and Will Moore played well. Decoud on the other hand is constantly out of position and giving up big plays.
I know Spoon was on Sproles most of the night, but can we bring a safety in the box and give our best blitzer a chance?

The Falcons and TN Titans are carbon copies of each other, although Atlanta is slightly better since they beat the Titans. The Falcons had “lady luck” on their side and made the playoffs while looking like a non-playoff team most of the season. The Titans will be extremely lucky if they even make the playoffs. Now the age old question. Would you rather your team make the playoffs and be one and done or not make the playoffs period?

I’ll agree with the overall assessment…much like UGA, the Falcons are just good enough to beat everybody else, but can’t beat the top echelon teams. But your comment about receivers “getting laid out” and the D not reciprocating- well, it’s kind of tough when the “judgment calls” of personal fouls on hits go only one way. Several hits by NO could have been flagged but weren’t but when Loftin made a perfectly legitimate clean hit, the flag was thrown. It tends to make you second guess every time you go in to try to break up a pass.

Now that a few calls have gone the other way you can hardly compete against sub .500 teams….and you can’t beat any legitimate Superbowl contending team. Not even Peter King can save you now…..Media darlings still must play the games….Everyone thought that the Falcons would win the South…guess what. WE OWN Mike Smith & the Birds…..

So when do these embarrasments start to motivate change? People want to give Dimitroff and Blank a pass but they have sold the fans on this team of Ryan/Smith and it has produced nothing but embarrasment on the big stages. I hate to say it but they look like the Hawks…….built to make the playoffs but get destroyed by the true contenders.
Also, anyone thinking Ryan may develop into a Brees is dreaming. Brees was already All-Pro and Offensive player of the year by the time he was Ryan’s age.
I know hindsight is 20/20 and Julio looks to be a future All-pro but the deficiencies on our lines shows how valuable draft picks are. We sure could use some help there and we’re not going to get it.

You like one guy. Hell… You may like lots of guys for all I know. Not that there is anything wrong with that of course.
Personel on Defense and the coordinators are the two biggest problems. Too many holes to fill, no pass rush and undersized DBs(one of which is vastly overpaid).

The Falcons are certainly capable of winning this years superbowl and beating the saints and green bay (clearly the top 2 teams in football) on any given night. The Falcons just have been settling for MEDIOCRITY and their coach (Mike Smith) hasnt driven them hard enough towards excellence. I saw in the first half of last nights game where there were at least 3 missed tackes which would have changed the outcome. There were also at least 2 pick opportunities where the falcon defenders had their mitts on the football but couldnt execute the interceptions. Honestly, that is the only way you will beat a new orleans team (only two years removed from being the world champions). The other thing the falcons forgot to do last night was PUT PRESSURE ON BREES. IF BREES IS PRESSURED, HE WILL MAKE MISTAKES AND THROW PICKS. Like the last blogger said, dont push the panic button yet until the Falcons have been eliminated in the playoffs.

As I said in an earlier post, I think the Falcons find themselves in a no man’s land right now, and in some ways it’s more frustrating than going 3-13 and being a lottery team. They’ve accomplished back-to-back winning seasons and now back-to-back playoff seasons for the first time ever under Mike Smith, which is great; there’s no disputing that.
But every team experiences times when they must evaluate whether to scrap the whole works and rebuild. In the case of a 3-13 team, that’s easy, of course. But when you’re a team that’s made it to the playoffs three out of the past four seasons and posted 4 straight winning records for the first time in franchise history, it can be a lot more difficult to view your situation objectively. Because merely making the playoffs isn’t the goal; at some point you have to ask yourself whether your current personnel (players and coaches) have hit their ceiling and will get no further.
The Falcons appear to be in that incredibly frustrating position. Just close enough to see how very far they still have to go. The difference between a playoff team that plays to survive and a Superbowl-caliber team that plays EXPECTING to win was demonstrated last night. In a way, the Falcons may be further away from getting to the next level than, say, the Rams or Colts, who at least know there are changes needed and can go in those directions. The question now is, are the Falcons willing to make the changes (which would likely have to be very broad) to get to a truly elite level? Rebuilding mode isn’t just for 3-13 teams; it’s for any team that can’t find a killer instinct.

The only thing I see embarrassing is the thought that some believe the game was fair.
Explain – exactly – WTF the call was on the safety? Looks to me like safety = sack = yards off Brees’ yardage total, so the ref picked up the flag.
Whatever it was, the ref made up a new rule, hence “Saints Rules”. Need I remind that these rules no longer apply in the playoffs (see – Seattle 2011).

I wish there were a way I could pull up stats on yardage plays gained by NO WRs last night on his side of the field. When you make as much money as he does there comes higher expectations to produce. Can you honestly say he is earning his $$?
Regardless of what system he works best in, you have to look at what he does in the system he normally plays in here.
You could pretty much ask that same question of the entire Philly defense considering their play this season. Isn’t their D coordinator a O-line coach or something?

Once a year or so I pop in here to point out the Falcons prime problem, and always get attacked by the blind chumps who spend their lives here, but those clowns will never go anywhere as long as VanDumbass is their DC. I tried to tell folks when he was blowing the big games at UGA, and when he went to Georgia Southern (before he totally destroyed their program in one season), and when he went to the Falcons, that moron runs the most craven defensive scheme in all of football (remember Martinez was his protege). It was so bad Gruden was ridiculing the Falcons defensive scheme last night. VanDumbass is always going to get reamed when he faces good offenses with good OC’s like Green Bay and NO. It’s pathetic. The happiest day of my life was when Spurrier hired him, but no, God wouldn’t let us have that good fortune, and sent him back to Atlanta post haste. What did Georgia do to offend him so badly that he would curse us with Van Dumbass for so many years?
As long as he’s the DC watching the Falcons is a huge waste of time. Wait until next year, and if VanDumbass is still the DC, wait until the next year after that, and again and again…

In a nutshell, you wanna know why we lost the game…there is NOT one single thing to point to we got beat in a number of areas…but on FIRST TAKE today, they illustrated 2 passing plays for TD that Brees threw…I felt the first one was a PERFECT microcosm of what took place…FALCONS had a great chance to get Brees with LOFTON rushing FREE on a blitz up the middle…has a CLEAN SHOT, fails to finish the play and make a tackle as Brees CALMLY steps to the side and throws a ball where ONLY his WR can make a play…later in the game a FREE blitzer for the SAINTS comes and Matt Ryan PANICS throws it away to avoid a sack and gets an INTENTIONAL grounding and pushes us back from the GOAL LINE.
FOLKS it’s the LITTLE THIGS that make the difference.
One more thing…the a&&holes that are the SAINTS Sean Payton who wants to come off as a “righteous good guy”…ran up the SCORE with 2 min and change left up by 22 and THROWING IT. You can preach to me all you want about some daym meaningless record, but the TRUTH is you have AN ENTIRE GAME to get 9 more freaking passing yards, you just WANTED TO RUB IT IN. Just admit it and be done with it. Yes it’s up the FALCONS to stop it but all this talk about the record is BS….you wanted it against the FALCONS and you wanted to RUB IT IN. Ben check your facts about Brees who will be 34 next month and Ryan who is 26. Brees was with the Chargers eight years ago, getting ready to be replaced by a draft pick named Phillip Rivers. Remember that?
In Brees 4th year in the league
65% completion rate 27 TD’s 7 INT 3,159 yards
Ryan’s 4th year in the league through 15 games
62% completion rate 27 TD’s 12 INT 4,069 yards
Even in Brees 5th year (Chargers) he had:
64% completion rate 24 TD 15 INT 3,576 yards. Not even close to what Ryan has in his 4th year.
Brees big yardage began with the Saints, who actually took a chance on him. He has ALWAYS been an interception machine, throwing 13 this year, and 22 last. His TD/INT ratio is 52% TD to 49% INT. 272 TD’s, 143 INT.
Ryans is 51% TD’s to 49% INT. 93 TD’s to 46 INT.
So while we all want to hang Brees in the rafters for his skill and performance, he didn’t really become Brees until he became a Saint with Sean Peyton.

One correction on my math, sorry.
Brees TD to INT ratio is 34% INT (143) to 64% TD’s (272)
Ryan TD to INT ratio is 33% INT (46) to 67% TD’s (92)
Brees completion rate in his career 65%. Ryan’s 62%. Just comparing first 4 years, not what Brees is now and what Ryan is currently. And Again the stats on Ryan this year:
You cannot blame Matt Ryan for this for sure. He has had a great season. He will break Jeff George’s single season passing record for the Falcons on Sunday. (4143 yards). His season:
90.7 Rating
4,071 yards
27 TD’s
12 INT.
He has had a great season although so many want to bash him. The line protecting him stinks, the running back is aged and cannot run like in the past, the defense has no rush, the DB’s can’t cover and the OC and DC need to go.
If Ryan was playing for Sean Peyton, he would probably be the MVP. Considering having an idiot for an OC consider this that Ryan is ranked for 2011:
8th in the league in rating
7th in the league in yardage
6th in the league in TDs

Maybe Brees passing near the end of the game was about the record, and maybe, just maybe, he, Peyton, and the Saints wanted to rub the Falcons’ noses in it a little more. Hopefully the Falcons will believe the latter was the case; it would give them some incentive to actually put Brees on his back in a couple of weeks as opposed to that pathetic so-called pass rush they showed last night. If they can’t get pressure on Brees and put him on the ground some, they’re not going to win, period.

I guess if you want a positive: if you play the Saints in the playoffs and need bulletin board material (not that you should) then last night’s game ought to suffice.
A lot’s already been said so I’ll just say this: the key to beating the Falcons appears to be this. Soft zone to prevent big strike TDs. Hold em to field goals until your defense adjusts. Then pile the points on their insufficient defense after they do.
The defense as it currently plays will get you one-and-done and probably get VanGorder a one-way ticket to who-knows-where.
