Mark Richt has Georgia back in SEC title game for first time since 2005. (Brant Sanderlin/AJC)
In Mark Richt’s first five seasons at Georgia, the Bulldogs played in three SEC championship games. In the next five, they played in zero. So this somewhat qualifies as a welcome back to relevancy.
But does the euphoria of playing in the conference title game against LSU on Saturday project to long-term significance?
If Georgia’s 10-game winning streak wasn’t the mere residue of a soft schedule, if Richt once again truly is in command of this program, if the relative off-the-field peace – let’s put Isaiah Crowell aside for a moment – isn’t some aberration, then the Dogs can celebrate much more than a division title.
Georgia may suddenly find itself in a position to flip the power structure in the conference.
That’s not to suggest LSU or Alabama may implode any time soon. (They won’t.) But given the Dogs’ youth and ascent, the maturity and resiliency following the 0-2 start, returning talent, and an expected impact on recruiting, completing for SEC titles may be the norm again. And competing for SEC titles means relevancy on the national landscape, as well.
Athletic director Greg McGarity isn’t that far removed from having to ponder making a coaching change after this season. So he has been careful not to be overly effusive in praise or make grand proclamations in recent weeks. But he didn’t hesitate when asked about the future.
“The potential is there for us to build on what we’ve established this year,” he said. “Things are definitely going in the direction we want them to be going in. But you can never stop having a sense of urgency.
Isaiah Crowell (center), the subject of rumors in recent days, will suit up, but Richt wouldn't address status of his running backs. (Brant Sanderlin/AJC)
“I think we’ve seen in this conference that you can turn things around quickly. That’s evidenced by what Steve [Spurrier] did at Florida. It’s evidenced by what [Nick] Saban has done at Alabama, and what he and [Les] Miles did at LSU. The difficult thing is staying competitive. If your recruiting falls off or you have [coaching] turnover, you can fall behind in a hurry. Look at what happened at LSU before Nick got there. Look at Tennessee now.”
The Dogs don’t need to upset LSU in the Georgia Dome to validate their season. But not getting blown out would help. And they have a legitimate shot to win this. Aaron Murray is playing that well. So are his receivers. So is the defense.
The biggest problem is the running game in general and Crowell in particular. He has been a cyber-rumor with ears in the past few days. Pick one: He malingered at practice; he feuded with teammates; he quit; he got suspended. The only certainty is that his health (lately his ankle) has been an issue all season.
Crowell was at the Dome with his teammates Friday. He is on the “dress-out” list. Richt again declined to comment on the status of any of his running backs. But McGarity chuckled when asked about the suspension rumor, saying he knows nothing of it and commenting, “I’d know, wouldn’t I?”
If the situation is weighing on Richt, he hid it well. He seemed at peace. He referenced his 100th career win at Tennessee, the comeback against Florida, the wins over Auburn, Kentucky and Georgia Tech. It was a news conference of reflection for Richt, which is unusual for him during the season.
“We’ve had a lot of really special times with this team this year,” he said. “I’ve enjoyed it maybe as much as any season that I’ve coached.”
He referenced the 0-2 start, the 6-7 record in 2010 and “all of the things I knew were swirling around, which I’m sure intensified. I didn’t pay a lot of attention to it, but I knew it was out there.”
When a national writer asked Richt if he felt vindicated, he responded: “This year in particular I’ve been very thankful for everything that’s happened. I’m thankful for a group of men who bought in back in January and went through all the things you have to go through to create team atmosphere and chemistry.”
It got them to the title game. It could get them to more in the future.

Jeff, you and the rest of the so called sportswriters crack me up…at the beginning of the year you were writing that Rev Richt had to go because the team started 0-2…then one player gets a DUI and the Ganja Gang gets doped up and the good Rev decides to suspend them conveniently after the Fla game and again all of you gripe about whether he has control of this team. Just like the first time around for the Rev he won SEC championships because the conference was crap and didn’t have coaches against him like Meyer, Saban, Spurrier, etc. He got lucky again this year with the weak sisters of the East and now they are a proclaimed a national powerhouse…what a joke! Nobody outside of the SEC thinks the Ugag program is nothing more than a recruiting juggernaut that underachieves with their coaching year in and year out…but keep up the good work kissing tail of the Nation so they can come back again next year crowing for no reason once again! What a joke!

Bill Stanfill, there’s not much mystery to Crowell, it appears he is a prima donna, that doesn’t want to work hard and maximize is God given talents. And thats a shame. I hope he can come around as much as the next Dawg, but if he can’t, the Coach needs to kick the Energy vampire off the bus! We dont need this kind of distraction on the team, and especially the week before the SEC championship. I for one believe that Richt’s house cleaning and team unity is the main reason for the turnaround, it hasnt been a talent issue.

Hey GTBob, Any truth to the rumor GT has applied for admission into the FCS(1-AA)? CPJ thought his funny little offense and lack of talent would be a better fit in 1-AA. And the GT admin thought that the little BDS @ Grant Field would be more in line with a 1-AA school. I wonder, if GT moved to 1-AA, would they still be on PROBATION?

Good column, Jeff. This team has a lot of youth, and McGarity is right on about how quickly things can turn south. I think Richt’s issues began with the coaching turnover, especially on the defense and offensive line. That appears to be fixed now. I think Richt also had a couple of recruiting classes that ended up with bad apples in them. The players that have been dismissed over the last year or so point to that.
This “Dream Team” appears to be the real deal though. Crowell’s issues aside, there is a lot of youth on this team and definitely promise for the future. If they can continue the momentum, and hopefully keep Grantham at DC for longer than just next year, they will indeed be set up for another good run under Richt.

Heard an interview on Jim Rome today with Bama’s Trent Richardson. Didn’t know it but he has 2 kids, fathered the oldest one when he was 16. Comes from a rough town; nobody gets out and goes to college. Odds stacked against him. He has taken this opportunity to work his a$$ off, possibly win the Heisman and another NC, and go into the NFL. He says he works hard for his kids. Sounds like he “gets it” and is making the most of it. I hate Bama but I respect what he is doing. Hopefully the light will come on with Crowell and he will see the opportunity he has right now and give it his best shot, not just for UGA’s sake, but for his own.

Okay…all of you fellow apes…post your predicted final score.
UGA losing 3 offensive linemen, with very little depth does not pose well.
Losing 3 key defensive players with the option for 2 or 3 more to leave early, add in the players who will transfer out, flunk out, quit, and injury will mean that UGA is not as deep as most think and playing freshman is never a great answer for the most part, with a few exceptions.

I know about Alabama’s SEC dominance, I believe they are 22 times champion, Tennessee is second with 14. But in all honesty, it is primarily due to the Bear Bryant run when the SEC was know as “Alabama and the Seven Dwarfs”.
Since the Championship Game began in 1992, even though Alabama won the first one, it has been dominated by Florida.

I hope it’s true that several of the seniors had a talk with Crowell. Maybe they got through to him. Maybe, just maybe they helped him see the light. If not, then get rid of his a$$ asap. I would rather lose with people who do want to work, than win with an A$$#*!* like that.
This is something to think about also. I remember reading an article on this fishwrapper’s very website about the recruitment of Marshall. He was asked about the fact that Crowell was already here. Someone should be able to check this out, but his response went something like he didn’t really want to be the main man. Now since we already have a guy like that on campus, do we really want another one? It is my understanding that Todd Gurley is as good if not better than Marshall, and he really likes to hit folks.
I hope Richard Samuel heals and comes back. He was just coming into his own. And that is one unselfish guy right there.

My advise to Crowell:
Think about what you are throwing away young man. Maybe you are too young to understand this but you are throwing away something that is very hard to obtain by most people and that is a decent education and financial freedom.
Stop thinking about yourself and start thinking about your family and your community. You are an extremely talentive young man which makes your destination to the nfl alot easier if you were to take care of your body and carry yourself like a man. It’s up to you.

yes bama has dominated and i cant stand it but there is worse. i had (and the emphasis is had) to suffer through several years in ne tn among the vol nation and it was when bama was dominating and the ball coach was coming into his own and peyton came on the scene. it was also the time of the chop in tallahassee and atlanta.
the joke is, waving the chop and asking, what does this mean in tallahassee? … go noles!
again same motion and asking what does this mean in atlanta (in 1991)? …. go braves!
then again, waving the chop … what does this mean in knoxville? …. first down alabama!
man, they hated that one up there as they were dominated by the bear and bama, then the ball coach got them down and finally a break through after peyton left and they were unsufferable fans.

IC has been a puzzle but, as the father of a child the same age, I would advise not giving up on him just yet. My child is also a frshman and adjusting quite nicely to college life but is under much less scrutiny. When I think of mine in that same position I can understand some mis-steps along the way. After all, IC can be described the same way as mine: A young adult but still a child in many ways. Its up to each of us individually, but you may want to consider allowing him to grow up some. Time is still on his side and talent like that generally finds a way to show itself.

1. for replacing the skirt chaser we had as athletic director.
2. for putting the gun to mark richt’s head……and, keeping it there no matter what the outcome of tomorrow’s game or ’smiling mike’ likes to say.
3. for scheduling boisie state…..a splash of cold water on a lethargic program and fan base.
4. for working with ACC and UGA police to solve off the field issues….since our coaching staff couldn’t.
5. for hiring a nutritionist for our football team (since our coaching staff didn’t think it was important)
6. for breathing the life into a football program that was on life support.

Wow, it is a good thing UGA played at the Dome already this year so they know how to get there. Otherwise the would need a map and GPS to fin their way. Six years is a long time. But not as long as since 1980.

Thats how we as fans see him but he is flesh and bone like any other human and some humans grow up faster than others. He is also being chellenged athletically for probably the first time in his life. He is a living, breathing example of why so many coaches prefer to redshirt players at certain so called “skill positions” as if they are all not skilled.
What encourages me so much about our future is the number of freshman and sophomores we are playing (and winning) with, depsite the mistakes you know kids that age will make. Yes, IC needs to mature but, if he had the luxury of learning the college game and our system without all the attention and spotlight that comes with a major program playing for a championship, all of this would be a non-issue.
We knew we were asking a lot of him and knew what the risks were. Hopefully the reward is worth it in the long run.

Those red panties were the best thing to ever happen for our football team. CMR and DE had significant disagreements for the last couple years of DE’s tenure. Richt wanted more money for S&C but DE wanted to win championships in various sports. It got so bad, UGA head coaches in other sports tried to convince Evans that the football program, as the major producer of revenue, had to have the assistance Richt requested but he wouldn’t budge.
The first thing CMR requested of McGarity was the same thing he had been asking for all along and it got corrected right away.

Players like Crowell often rise to the occasion in games like these, as long as something really bad doesn’t happen early like a fumble or reaggravating a nagging injury. The guys who really hurt the team are Ealey and King.
The only way I see LSU blowing out UGA would be a combination of costly turnovers and big plays. I’ll be surprised if LSU is able to power run over UGA and control the game, and I will not be surprised if Murray goes on one of his completion streaks at some point. Jefferson worries me; one key missed tackle or gap assignment and he can break a long one. Special teams may decide the game, but I look for UGA to beef up their lineups on special teams. All-said, protection for Murray is definitely the key – if he has time he’ll carve up LSU.

Future is bright. No argument with Schultz on that pont. Also no argument that it’s never a cakewalk.
What I think most Dawg fans want is this: Can 2011 be a platform for MORE succes (i.e.: championships)? IOW, can we build and better from her vs. merely maintain or worsen (a la 2005 onward)?
Like Schultz stated, consistent coaching and recruiting are imperatives.
The AD (CEO) is in place.
Budgets are there.

And they want be as long as you have the worst coach in the SEC running his big mouth. You come on this blog and constantly brag about how much talent Florida has, and how great their young q.b’s are. Newsflash to you, Florida’s young Q.B’s are overrated, just like all the 5 star D.L. What is going on with all the folks talking about how good Georgia’s football team is, all of a sudden. They still have not beaten anybody. By all rights, they should be able to play LSU talent to talent, considering the recruiting reports. Georgia is #2 in recruiting for the last ten years. Tomorrow, we find out whether that talent has been coached. If they are able to hang with LSU, even if they lose, then maybe they are on the right track, but if they get blown out, they are doing nothing different than the last five years. They beat Auburn, in a very down year for Auburn. They beat GT, so what. Georgia fields four times the talent Tech does. I’ll believe CMR is a coach when I see them competitive with LSU & Ala. Until then, Georgia needs a coach.

“Crowell is a mystery to me.”
Bill, Crowell’s no mystery. He’s what we use to call, in less PC times, an a-hole. And Richt should think hard in the offseason about whether he wants Crowell back next year. If he returns, it should be on Richt’s terms and with a major attitude adjustment. Coaches have gone soft. Bear Bryant would have had this kid crying for his momma by now. He probably would have quit. And this sissy hairstyle that’s so prominent with so major players would have never been tolerated. I think society has become so afraid to offend ANYONE that we now go for anything.

Dawg fans, we need to be thankful for Richt. Just a couple of short years ago, Alabama and LSU were basically irrelevant, and now look at them. If Crowell had the heart that Samuel or Moreno have he’d have a legitimate shot at winning the Heisman. Instead, he will probably get kicked off the team and never reach his full potential. I wish he could realize how lucky he is to have a full scholarship and to be able to play for such a great school. I wonder if he has ever seen the movie Rudy. That is what heart is all about. Very few people are lucky enough to have the talent that Crowell has and it’s painful to watch it go to waste. I wonder what it would take to get through to him before it’s too late.

If Georgia gets a fast start they have a chance but if it stays close to halftime, LSU is stacked with fresh players on offense and defense and will win by simply wearing UGA down in the second half. It happened to Bama and it happened big-time to Arkansas.

Tech fans, there’s a fine line between rooting for the other team (which I always do) and being uncivilized.
UGA caught fire after starting 0-2 and won 10 straight. Unfortunately, you lost to the two best teams you played this year. Looking at your wins, Auburn and GT are the “best” wins you had. I always go with the hot team, but this game I just can’t – cause LSU is hotter.
Crowell looks like he’s going down the Ealey / King path doesn’t he?

To all you people. Florida has a horrible season this yar. That is a fact. Florida is still in the SEC and in the SEC East. That is a fact. Florida has a lot of very young talent on defense. That is a fact. Florida needs about 5 pro style players on offense to be good on offense…..RB, big WR, three backup OL, blocking TE…that is a fact. FLorida has Matt Jones an Mike Davis coming in next year to play RB. Fact. Florida has Taylor coming in to play the big WR (6′5 and 215)….fact. Florida has Jassman Dunkler, Chris Humprhries, and more than like…Avery Young….coming in to play OL. And they have a big TE coming in, Colin Thompson, to block in the postion. Jacoby Brissett and Jeff Driskell are very talented QBs who just need to learn more and get some experience.
Sorry….Georgia…..fans. Florida is stil in the SEC……and I think they will have enough talent to more than make up those 4 points they lost by this year.
But….continue to enjoy your chance at a SEC title…….and see you in JAX next year. No Gator is afraid or going anywhere…..except turning more Dawg dreams into Dawg nightmares.

Anybody remember that great Florida Gayturd recruiting class of 2010? It was called the class of the decade. Two more guys left the team this week which makes 10 guys from 2010 to leave the program. Florida is down to 68 scholarship players. The point is: No player confidence in Judas Muschamp and Charlie “Bufffet Boy” Weis. Floyd, Powell and Easley have reportedly contacted Urban about a transfer to OSU. They said they committed to Urban not Coach Boom Boom. Urban has already contacted current Gayturd commits who are now waffling on Boom Boom. Can you imagine Coach Buffet Boy teaching technique to a QB while sitting on a cooler? Powell, Easley, and Floyd love it in Gaineville and love playing for Muschamp and his defense. And Meyer has not contacted a single Gator commit. The Dogs are in the game because they are a decent-to-fair team with a favorable SEC schedule, in a year when both Florida, and UT are down, and USC had the worst luck imaginable losing their senior QB and Heisman candidate RB.
Considering this and the fact that their current class is not even in the top 30 (# 31 per Scout.com), the doggies won’t be nationally relevant any time soon, and are hardly trending in that direction. Tomorrow’s outcome will illustrate this.

Why are people still bragging about the tech win? UGA should beat Tech 90% and the fans should expect that. What happened to bragging about things that matter, like championships? Who cares if UGA wins 10 games a year, if they have nothing to show for it in the form of BCS bowl rings or championship trophies. The state of the UGA fan base is getting worse and worse. Did any of you happen to reflect on the 10 wins UGA has this year. Please examine the schedule closely and you will see that UGA has done nothing out of the ordinary. UGA has become a joke over the last 3 years, No respect from the media, other fans, and even former players are taking shots at UGA. Even the tech fans mock us and other fans call UGA the most delusional fan base ever and now I see why. Even on the LSU blogs they do not even mention UGA, all they talk about is the Alabama game if anyone does mention UGA the other bloggers laugh. This is pitiful and UGA fans need to wake up and realize it has been 31 years and counting.

I wonder if any of the books about UGA football include the perspective of someone speaking for the late Jan Kemp? The perspective that “student” athletes like Lindsay Scott were playing years without taking college level courses? That the proudest moment of the football program was earned by players who never earned a single college credit?
Dawgtards love to return to 1980, but their memories are really short when it comes to remembering an earthshaking event that happened a few years later that showed the world what a joke UGA athletes were and what a scam artist their beloved Vince Dooley was (and is). So for all those dawgtards with short memories or who think their athletes are actually taking real courses and trying to graduate, here’s the quote that broke the trial wide open and showed what a slimeball Dooley is:
O. Hale Almand Jr., a lawyer for the defense, offered a justification for the favorable treatment accorded the athletes, citing a hypothetical player. “We may not make a university student out of him,” he told the jury, “but if we can teach him to read and write, maybe he can work at the post office rather than as a garbageman when he gets through with his athletic career.”
Nothing has changed at UGA, they just do a slightly better job of keeping things quiet, but that’s hard to do when almost 50 of your player-thugs have been arrested, isn’t it?

-McFarland left because he was not good enough at TE
-McCoy left to play in the spread at Texas Tech
-Christian left because he was third string TE, did not come to meetings on time, and knew Florida has commits from two of the top TEs in the country
-Clark left because he rarely played and is a little spread WR who would not play in Weis’s system
-Dowling left for reasons not known for sure, but I am sure it was legal related.
-Coxson left last year because he did not fit the spread….should have stayed.
-Dunkley left because of academic issues and he was a little spread WR and was buried on the depth chart at WR
-Jordan Haden left because he was home sick and wanted to play close to home
-Brandon Beal left for Minnesota to get playing time, which he would not have received at Florida
-Adrian Bushnell left for academic reasons and enrolled at Louisville.
-Dee Finley left after being arrested again…at Muschamp’s suggestion
-T.J. Lawrence left to get playing time at Florida A&M and becaus he did not fit the spread offense WR type….maybe he should have stayed.
I think Trey Burton may transfer to be with Meyer at Ohio State (with his brother).
Muschamp is clearly out the players who have bad attitudes, get into trouble with the law, don’t go to class, or don’t fit his system (if they want to leave). Those players leaving open up postions for players who are Muschamp’s type of players.

@TampaGator,
You always seem to make good analysis on the state of both UGA’s an FL’s progress. I for one do not believe that FL will be down for long. I also think that UGA is on the upswing, along with SC. I further believe that the west does not have much respect for the teams in the east. With that being said; UGA will not come into tomorrow’s game intimidated by LSU. They feed off of big plays. If we are able to prevent that, then we have a decent chance of beating them.
All the pundits point out that we played a weak schedule. However, we don’t get to choose how good those teams will play throughout the course of the year. All the predictions and stats comparisons mean nothing. The game is won and lost on the field.

nerds are funny,
Your display of either ignorance should be embarrassing to dawg fans. You are the “delusional fan” I hear about on this site so often. First, who cares if UGA beats Ga. Tech? UGA is supposed to beat Tech all things considered. Then you try and degrade the University of Florida football program when they are obviously in decline as well as most other teams in the SEC east. Anyone with a brain knows Florida will be back and sooner rather than later and in all honesty UGA is not “back” yet. Muschamp does not make more than Richt for no reason. Obviously Florida’s athletic director knows how to hire championship coaches, see Steve Spurrier, Ron Zook, and Urban Meyer. I would gladly take those championship over consistent 9-10 win seasons. I am a dawg fan soon to be an alumni, I just at least want my children to see UGA win one championship. You should be able to understand that right? Thirty years is a long time.

#7 v #7 will be huge. Murray will need to not try to force the ball to Charles.
I still don’t see what you guys see in Crowell. He would be red shirted at LSU or the #4 back. Hillard was the #4 back and is now the #2. i have been honest that i am not a Huge Murray fan. if he really plays good against LSU I will give his credit. If he has 2-3 INTS and 2 or less TD’s, I will still say he is more potential than production.

Tampa – Thanks for the suggestion but I’ll call it as I see it. UGA is a GOOD program, not elite. Current elite programs have pedigree, visibility, and multiple conference championships and or NC’s in recent years. UF, LSU, and Bama qualify as such in the SEC. Texas, OK, Ohio St., USC, and maybe Oregon also qualify. Even Boise could make an argument….were it not for that schedule.
Don’t confuse this with current rankings. Georgia is a little like FSU, Miami, Texas A&M, South Carolina. A nice history, but only one or fewer conference championships in recent years. Not a bad thing, just not as good as the next tier up.

Florida is the sunshine state. I still do not see why other UGA fans are bragging so much about beating some of the worst teams the SEC East has fielded in all my years watching them play football. If this has what being a “true” UGA fan is about then UGA is on the verge of losing all respect that this team had in the past. When will people wake up and realize what is going on?

I give him another year, two depending on whether you get 7 wins next year.
Perception versus reality, ask Paul Johnson about his theory on that.
It was perceived that Muschamp was the defensive mastermind at TX. Will that make him a great head coach? That remains to be seen. The mastermind behind your offense has yet to win at any level.
Same perception of Smart at AL. Is he really the great mind behind that defense or is it all smoke n’ mirrors? Enquiring minds want to know. When the time is right we will have our answer.
I think that I can speak for the UGA faithful in saying that right now, no one really gives a _______ about any of your much hated programs.

You are correct in saying that many of Florida’s recruits have not panned out. Such is the folly of over-hyping recruiting rankings. If you are consistently top ten, you should be fine. But even elite programs like Florida go through a rough patch with attrition.
As long as the state of Florida continues to produce 3-to-5 star players at two to three times the rate of neighboring states, it’s flagship university (UF) will remain an elite program.
Again, good luck to the dogs tomorrow.

CKgator and friends… UGA has a much better tradition than UF, just not over the last twenty years. You know, college football did not begin when Spurrier finally lead the reptiles to their first SEC title in the 90s. UGA is among the top 12 NCAA schools in winning tradition unlike the lowly gators.
Furthermore (4) trips to the SEC championship in the last (10) years is not evidence of a below par coach or program. If, in defining elite program, current means in the last ten years, UGA qualifies as elite. If you define current as in the last year, then UGA is elite. Gator fans should not be so concerned about Mark Richt or UGA, you’ve got bigger problems to concern yourselves with. And if you think UGA fans are “delusional” but not gator fans, then maybe you are one as well. I’ll take enthusiastic “delusional” fans anytime. Well, it is time to make my “delusional” prediction. Methinks UGA will fare well but come up short. Our “D” is certainly good enough but I can see a couple of turnovers by our “O”. LSU is clearly a dominant team especially with their defense. Ahhhhh, it’s officially 12/3/11, only 16 hours until UGA gets slapped around
With 25 Seniors, and top juniors being eyed for the NFL Draft, next season should be great without an OL, if we could just face 10 more teams next season who don't end up in any Top 25 Poll - like this season already.
December 3rd, 2011
12:06 am
Outback Bowl at 1pm on Monday faces UGA, as the local media makes great hype about UGA playing for The SEC Championship after winning The SEC Championship in 2002, when the only other SEC team ranked in the Coaches’ Poll Top 25 in 2002 was 4-Loss Auburn.
2005, of course, UGA did beat LSU in The SEC Championship Game, but when the season was over – it is only Mark Richt in the entire Mark Richt era from 2001 to present who won The SEC Championship Game and then LOST his bowl game. This put Mark Richt at a # 10 ranking in every poll for 2005, and left him The SEC’s # 3rd ranked team – ranked worse than LSU at # 6 and Alabama at # 8.
So, this season is really great. Lost to every team who ends up in The Top 25 of any poll. Pitting # 5 SEC Team – UGA Bulldogs – vs The # 1 team in the nation, and leaving at home 1-Loss Alabama who lost to only # 1 LSU ranked # 2 in the nation, leaving at home Arkansas # 6 in the nation who lost only to # 2 Alabama and to # 1 LSU, and of course leaving at home 10-2 South Carolina who beat UGA head-to-head at 10-2 on the season while of course mediocre lying Mark Richt is also 10-2 who lost to 10-2 South Carolina head-to-head, leaving South Carolina ranked AHEAD of UGA in the Polls, obviously.
Last year, was no different with no wins all last season either, against any team who ended the season in the top 25 of any poll.
3 years ago in 2009, Georgia under Mark Richt beat a highly questionable Georgia tek who lost all their games at the end of that season and who beat no good teams themselves either in 2009, but Georgia tek did end up # 13 nationally in the polls. 1 win over the last 3 years over any team who ended up in the top 25.
4 years ago, 2008, Mark Richt began the season # 1 pre-season only to promptly go out and lose to every good team we played all season long giving up consecutive points of 29, 31 and 42 points in a row in the all losses. At the end of the 2008 season, Mark Richt got to play a sorry Michigan State team who beat not 1 team who finished in any top 25 poll either. A battle of bowl opponents, neither of whom beat a team who finished in the top 25.
2007 Mark Richt had completed his lousy sweep by every SEC opponent in a row – 6 Consecutive Losses to every lousy SEC East team in row with his loss to a 6-6 South Carolina who didn’t even play in a bowl game and with his blow-out loss to the vols.
And, the tumultuous year of 2006 when UGA did beat # 9 Auburn but lost 4 games including to 8-loss Vandie.
It’s not been pretty.
WAIT ‘TIL NEXT YEAR. The kick-off hasn’t even happened, as the DISNEYdawgs.com rain supreme over this nation, sitting here squirming in their seats hiding behind their keyboards bragging how great their insights that UGA – once again under Mark Richt has completed an entire season AGAIN having beat not 1 team who ends up in any Top 25 Poll. And, so before we play LSU DISNEYdawgs.com proudly proclaim us winners and project LSU will wonder what freight train just ran them over, and then brag on Heisman Trophy and National Championship for next year – before this game is even kicked-off : Wait ‘Til Next Year.

“I just got tired of talking about it. I didn’t tell our local media guys, so we’ll wait until the game,” Mark Richt lied so as to not have to discuss the 7 Running Backs he gave Scholarships to so that they could play in this SEC Championship Game between # 5-ranked in The SEC UGA vs # 1-ranked in the nation LSU :
MULTIPLE SUSPENSION RUNNING BACKS OF MARK RICHT 2011 :
01-TB Isaiah Crowell Freshman couldn’t hide 2nd suspension
02-TB Carlton Thomas – 3rd suspension again for 4 games
03-TB Boo Malcome – recruited here injured, Suspension too
04-TB Washaun Ealey – Jr. – Transferred to Jacksonville State
05-TB Dontavius Jackson – would be RJr transferred to UAB
06-TB Caleb King – would have been senior 2011, flunked out
07-TB Richard Samuel – ankle surgery Thursday after Florida
“I ain’t talking about it,” Mark Richt proudly proclaims again today in The SEC Press Conference.
No wonder.
And, what good does it do for him to not talk about it, when DIRECTLY then the press asks his boss who hasn’t extended his contract yet, Mr. Greg McGarity a tennis playing player now in charge of the Athletic Department for Michael F. Adam$ ?
“Watching from the sideline as the players milled about on the field Friday, Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity said he wasn’t aware of anything that would keep Crowell from playing in Saturday’s game. “I’d know, wouldn’t I?” Chip Towers reports.
Nice Greg McGarity. Apparently, Greg McGarity did not get the memo that discussing running backs at UGA this season is a no-win discussion and especially for this game – not against a team like the previous 10 in a row who are not ranked today and who will not be ranked – none of the 10.
Oh, but we have a 10-win season.
There are 25 other teams this season alone who also accomplish 10-Win seasons. 25 others besides us, and which of those 25 did Mark Richt beat this entire season ?

I’ll become “delusional” once UGA starts beating quality opponents. Once more I say do a thorough investigation of the teams UGA beat this year and you should not be so impressed. Those games they won are what should be expected. 10 win season are not good enough especially given this seasons circumstances.

Yes I do notice and I appreciate comments like yours sir. The UGA fan base needs a wake up call but they just won’t do it. Surely they are intelligent enough to see that these 10 wins are average at best. Surely they see that UGA is constantly disrespected by the media, other fan bases, former players, and alumni. I personally would like to see UGA at the least be a respected football program but they are not there yet. The LSU fans on the espn blog I subscribe to do not even mention UGA at all, if they do it is only to make a mockery of them. Even UGA’s player’s feel disrespected by the media and the pollsters and they have the right to feel that way as I do as a fan also. Go Dawgs and promote bringing back respect to our program on the national level.
It would be a good start if we would not have 33 suspended and arrested football players who have been kicked off this 2011 roster by Mark Richt, or just QUIT the program after all their BAD PRESS.

Of course, it would be nice if we would actually BEAT a team who ends the season in the Top 10 for a change. Last time we did THAT was 2006 when we beat then # 9 Auburn. Only problems with that ? (1) 2006 was Six (6) Seasons ago we last beat a team who finished in the Top 10. (2) We LOST Four (4) Football games in 2006 including to the likes of 8-Loss Vandie.

The positive sign for UGA is that the rest of the SEC West sucks. Other than that, UGA is a decent team in a bad division that will continue to lose to better talent in the west & can only sell out a home game when the team is winning more than 2 in a row. This is who you are Georgia.
Cordially.

Schultz, I tld you in January, that the Bulldogs were on the rise , that the Dawg had turned, and that the next 5 or 6 years they would be the team to beat in the East. That Richt would be at UGA for 15 years if he wanted to be and that there would be an SEC title in the next 2 years and a NC shot coming in the next 4 at most and playing for the SEC title for the next 3 years. I did not count on this one but thought it was possible. They are ahead of schedule. You will come around soon, believe me. Shame on you for being a MAJOR part of the media hype that UGA, top to bottom, had to endure. Its hard to beat Tebow ,he won 2 NC’s! UGA should have had a NC shot but LSU went instead and UGA got Hawaii! Sometimes the BETTER team, does not win th econference BECAUSE they were not playing GREAT earlu in the season but WERE at the end. So your RIcht did not win the SEC in the last 5 years or play in the title game, as being monumental in YOUR basis for his job being in question. See why you are not in administration?! LOL. You miss the details brother. You cant see the forest for the trees and due to that you LED the media hype against UGA and it was not justified. Tebow, defectors, #1 draft picks and others leaving early, Cox, freshman QB, rebuilding started in 2009, OL in the ER, injury, after injury, running backs not panning out for several reasons. There were JUSTIFIABLE reasons for UGA being down for 2 years. But guess what you bashed them daily, put the heat on Richt, but its OVER! OK? They made it through with Richts job intact! They will be a force for the next 6 years minimum. The FAVORITE in the East EVERY YEAR over Florida and SC and Tenn(LOL). So you gave your BEST shot and they took it! Now its time to take yours and please, stay off the bandwagon!
Go Dawgs! See you in the dome Sat at 4!

It is true that The SEC East is DOWN and has been down. However, The SEC West has # 1 LSU, # 2 Alabama # 6 Arkansas, and The SEC East has # 12 South Carolina and # 15 UGA (before our blow-out loss this afternoon costing us further in the polls – having already dropped in the rankings Saturday after beating Georgia tek who like Auburn is not ranked in ANY poll today and neither end the season ranked either.
We should have beat South Carolina. If SMU a 7-5 team can beat TCU and TCU beats Boise State, then UGA most assuredly with 11 recruiting classes averaging # 7 rank averaging both Rivals and Scout, should have beat Boise State too.
But, the facts are South Carolina in SEC East is # 12 and UGA SEC East is # 15, even if we did lose head-to-head to South Carolina because we didn’t play Arkansas like South Carolina did.
There has not been a domination of college football in 30 years like what is happening to all of America in college football this season by The SEC.
What ?
Are we to suspect that UCLA Oregon (who LSU beat) is a great PAC-12 Championship Game ?
That Okie State to lost to 6-6 Iowa State is a great match-up in their NO BIG XII CHAMPIONSHIP GAME with Choke-la-homa today ?
That Virginia Tech who already lost to Climpsum Farmers who South Carolina just throttled again here in The SEC East is a great America’s Cupcake Conference CHUMPionship game ?
Let’s be real about it ok ?
Put the 10 Big Ten (12) bowl teams up against The SEC’s 9 and let’s see who wins the big bowl games, ok ?
That’s all I’ve got for This Season AGAIN since my beloved Bulldogs play in the Outback Bowl at 1 pm on a Monday AGAIN.

Wow! The negative Neds are on the board tonight. I sure wish that all the Richt nay-sayers would just clam up. Everybody is moaning and groaning about Crowell’s durability and that he is a slacker and a bad apple. He is a kid people. Everybody wanted this guy. He has been playing hurt all season. Have you ever had a rib injury? I have. Binding them doesn’t help at all. You can’t breathe. Sure it would be great if he hadn’t gotten hurt but he did and that weighs on a guy. He will play tomorrow and he will make a difference and then all the blah blah blah will fade away. Look at Lattimore. He was hurt last year too. He is supposed to be such a bruiser but he has missed quite alot of time to be only a sophomore. Isaiah is good sized but not BIG. He is a slasher. He is learning what it takes to be an SEC back. Moreno didn’t play as a freshman. Who is to say he wouldn’t have had the same problems? Give the kid a break. The rumor mill always has some crap going. Attitude problems, drugs,… it’s all hearsay. Crowell’s first 2 carries against Kentucky were for 6 yards apiece. His ankle was injured trying to drive the pile and get more yards. He was giving his all and got hurt. It happens. He sat out last week. If we had needed him the coaches would have sent him in. We didn’t. He’ll play tomorrow. Maybe he’ll start. Maybe he won’t. But win or lose he will have made some kind of positive contribution. He might even be the star. Give the kid a break.
Dawgs win… by less than 10 points. Unashamedly a Bulldog. I bleed red and black. Win or lose, I love my Dawgs! Sick’em!

LSU gets shocked in the dome! Georgia 33-13. After capitalizing on LSU’s miscue at the 13 and 20 Georgia made quick work of a tired and depleted Tiger Defense. Aaron Murray’s 3 touchdowns in the first half proved too much for LSU’s maligned offense to catchg up.
Going to a no huddle offense Aaron Murray throwing at will with great protection was able to connect to Marlon Brown for a 13 yard touchdown in the 1st quarter, then a phenominal grab at the LSU’s 18 yard line by freshman sensation Malcolm Mitchell proved too much in the 1st quarter for a seemingly confused LSU defensive backs.
LSU would kick a field goal to end the quarter but clearly Georgia was the better team up to that point.
Georgia 14-3. Later in the 2nd quarter Georgia marching down against LSU, Isiah Crowell runs from the Georgia 38 all the way down to the LSU’s 22 yard line.
Pick and roll, Aaron Murray connects to Orson Charles in the middle and takes it all the way down to the LSU 3. Isiah Crowell punches it in for a Georgia 21-3 lead over #1 ranked LSU.
On the pursuing kickoff LSU fumbles at the 13 yard line, minutes later Georgia kicks a field goal making it 24-3 over what seems to be a rout.
LSU then on a 2 minute drill finds a way to salvage the first half by kicking a 37 yard field goal. Georgia 24-6 over LSU.
Dont think it cant happen? Think again. If your tigers comes to the dome as arrogant and full of itself like the naysayers LSU fans, then they got a huge problem. Overconfidence breeds inconsistency, arrogance developes into non-motivational attitudes.
LSU just cannot seem to get up and pull itself together, maybe its because theyre looking toward the BCS Championship or maybe they never paid any respect toward Georgia. To get so far without any blemishes, to have the best defense in the land and give up 397 yards.
How this will shake up the BCS now with Alabama at No.#2 and the long list of 1 loss teams. Congradulations Georgia on your 33-13 win over what seems to be an overrated LSU team. LSU seemed to not find their way Saturday as Georgia capitalized on 2 miscues by LSU.
This is Georgia’s National Championship game and not LSU’s. LSU spits at Georgia’s record and totally disregards their strength of schedule like it was a game with Grambling.
Game means nothing more than a SEC Championship to LSU with the grand prize for them down the road. Dont even start to compare that this game means alot to LSU compared to Georgia.
LSU fans just sit back and enjoy your beer in your recliner during the game. After Saturday’s loss all of you LSU fans will be wanting Les Miles head on a platter for losing to a 12th ranked team that played a weak schedule.

This blog contains such an assortment of inanities that it validates the old adage about opinions being like…donkeys. Or something like that.
LSU fans, love your egomaniacal predictions of doom for the Dawgs. Hope your players waltz into this feeling the same way. I’m sure that they will enjoy meeting Jarvis Jones and company. Jordan Jefferson will be having nightmares about the Georgia defense and his parole officer chasing him through the streets of Atlanta. Here’s to the esteemed criminal justice system in the banana republic otherwise known as Loozianna, where all you have to do to get out of a felony is be the starting QB for the state’s flagship public university. Think about it: If JJ had been just an average non-Tiger, he’d be starting his prison term right about now.
And as far as GT Bob and Go Tech are concerned, I’m sure that it makes both of you feel a whole lot better about the whole perpetual mediocrity/perennial beatdown/little brother/10 out of the last 11 thing to to come onto the AJC Blogs and vent your spleen about a team that perpetually reminds you of your own myriad shortcomings in life. Stuck in a boring, mediocre, low-paying job? Wish you’d one day be able to find a girl who’ll actually talk to you? Tired of being reminded of your own innate ineptitude? We’re here to help. Fire away. Salve that ego. And enjoy the next decade or two of mediocrity, by the way–both with your chosen football team and with your life. It’s only going to get worse.
And to Go Tech, specifically: yeah, right. Just remember: we’re not the ones on probation.

It is terribly unfortunate that Crowell has been the huge disappointment that he has for the DAWGS this season. Here’s a boy (not yet a man) who seemingly refuses to “grow up”. Football on this level is a “man’s world” and he simply doesn’t bring it! Capable in every respect except between the ears. Here he is going thru the “walk thru” at the Dome texting on his cell phone……gee, what is he doing so unfocused, ordering more weed? Unfortunately, he was treated like a prima dona while at Carver. He comes to UGA with flashes of talent and glory and dictates even when he’s going to play, taking himself out of games at will. I think the Coaches at UGA have about had enough and I knoiw the fans have. This is the reason that top notch running backs are a HUGE concern for next year. I wouldn’t be surprised if we’ve heard the last of Sir Crowell after this season. You never know if a player will “cut it” when they come out of puberty but this one definitely hasn’t made that change!
Call me a Crowell basher? Call it what you will, IC! Prove all of us wrong! The silver britches at USA are lined with Great Ones! CMR saw that in you when he gave you a scholarship and pasted a “”#1 on your jersey and even got into trouble with the “missing man) formation when you visited UGA! What do you have? Can you prove all of us wrong? Do you really have what it takes?? I still say your # should be changed to (0) and maybe even (00) until you prove it consistently. There are other truly #1’s out there itching to get going and make you look like a pee-wee player! Anyway, that’s my story and I’m sticking to it!! GO DAWGS!!!!! Oh, by the way, if and I do mean IF you do show up in this game, try not to take your stupid tweats out to the huddle during the game! It won’t look very good on TV and you just might hurt yourself a little bit!! GROW UP, for Pete’s sake!!

Is there a PR man from Georgia that goes around Atlanta and hands out talking points. No where in the universe do they push the accomplishments of Georgia like we are seeing here. Most people are still open to this not being a mirage, but certainly the jury is not in and the only reason South Carolina is not back in the SEC Championship is because of a schedule that included Arkansas. I think this was one of the weakest years in decades for the SEC covered up by the very good teams on top that are the quality the nations has learn to love about the SEC. Florida who usually keeps Georgia honest is one of the worst teams in the SEC this year, Auburn may be worse than Florida after being the national champion. Mississippi State is back to being Mississippi State and Mississippi is going through one of the sloppiest seasons they have ever seen. Vandy and Tech may have been the strongest teams Georgia saw in this stretch, and for some reason Tech mail the defense in like it did against Virginia and Miami who beat a very mediocre Tech team. When has Tennessee been worse in our memory and Kentucky who was killed by Vandy beat Tenn. This are is not just a weak schedule, I challenge anyone who knows SEC football to name a team in 20 years that has had a weaker schedule. A lot of this is because of the fall of other programs, and the amazement that one of the real teams in the SEC did not have to play Georgia.
I was listening to Bulue on radio. He says even if Georgia loses big today we should celebrate the season and Richt. If Georgia gets blown out today which I believe they will, those contracts will be back in question and Richt’s days will be numbered.

Exact same can be said about South Carolina. They played as many freshman as anyone, save Aubie (Aubie played 26, SC played 25). Their recruiting this year looks better than ever. Coaching staff is very young. Except for SOS and Ellis Johnson, everyone else is in their 20s and 30s. They’ve beaten UGA, UF and UT 2 years in a row. They’ve beaten Clem 3 years in a row. So, I sat down and read the AJ-C this morning. Not 1 talking-head is picking UGA and most call this game a blow-out.
And, this is supposed to be good because South Carolina had to play Arkansas and both of us missed Alabama and LSU ?
Excuse me. UGA plays LSU this afternoon. Their offense is efficient, while ours is not. Their special teams are dominate, while ours are dominated by every one of the lousy # 43 SoS teams we played this season. Their defense is better than ours. Their coaching staff runs rings around ours.
What’s that leave us with ?

While Georgia has to be a significant underdawg today it is just one game and anything can happen in one game if you come prepared with a game plan! I hope Bobo has some plays up his sleeve that can keep that mighty LSU defense wondering and off balance. Now its not Bobo’s schtick to have the mentality of a Spurrier but it sure doesn’t hurt. The defense can only help the offense so much. They have to keep the LSU offense off the field. We have to be able to control the line and drive the ball, eat up time. This team is young but has been growing up this season. It ain’t been pretty at times but today is the day to grow a little or a lot more. Which will it be? Crowell is a college freshman that needs to grow up some. Remember when you were a freshman in college? Go Dawgs! Don’t be too over pumped like you were for a little while with Boise State. Help us, oh Lord when Georgia tek is the measure of The Unviersity of Georgia Bulldogs’ Football Program.
They haven’t won a Major Bowl game since 1957. They have lost 6 bowl games in a row. They are on NCAA PROBATION in FOOTBALL back-to-back repeat offenders. Georgia tek is not ranked in any poll whatsoever. Neither is Auburn, if what we did to Auburn was our best win. I presume even Auburn could beat Georgia tek with their lack of players. 25 seniors and the juniors being eyed for the NFL Draft now except for Aaron Murray who no one will EVER draft. And, we see – this is a young team. Hogwash. This is a football team who for years has been unable to beat a single team who ends the season in the in-fact top 25 even. Special teams does need to show up today. As far as the running backs go we have to play with the cards we have been dealt. If CMR is at peace then he must know something we don’t because the RB situation has been enough to keep grown men up, this season! Crowell found himself 1st on the depth chart at the age of 18 when King flunked out and Ealey quit. He is young and needs to grow up. In a perfect world he would have been worked in to the system carrying the ball maybe 10 to15 times a game. In high school he rarely played past the 1st half because his team was so far ahead. He has talent but he needs to grow up and be coached up.. His style is speed and elusiveness. He has never been a Herschel, who was speed and power. Georgia needs to get a couple of RB’s in this recruiting class because it will be at least two years before Crowell is physically tough enough to carry the load. Expectations were way over board for a true freshman and he is feeling the pressure and hearing the displeasure, on TV and in the news. Unless you are willing to suit up and get crushed by 300 pounders back off on the criticism and give him one full year to get stronger and tougher. He is going to be good – in time.

Have you beaten a team currently ranked in the top 25? LSU beat the entire West and that includes two teams currently ranked in the top ten. THAT IS A REMARKABLE feat. UGA, Alabama, Florida, LSU are the teams MOST FREQUENTLY to visit the Dome in this era of SEC divisional play. U of ARKY and MSU have been there too but UGA in 11 years enjoys a very presitgious spot with approximately 40% of the East appearances over 11 years. Wow!!!

Don’t know (Well I guess I do) why the “Anti-Christian” attitude prevails among SOME readers. I’m both a well educated, successful UGA graduate and a Christian. They are not mutually exclusive. I love UGA football and CMR has class when SOME around him (and on this blog) do not. As he says, being a football coach is what he does but it’s not who he is (and that means he’s going to Heaven when he dies). Also, CMR’S values and influence are ETERNAL while his coaching record is TEMPORAL. He is both a great coach and a fine man of GOD. So, praise GOD and go “DAWGS”.

The problem with these divisional championships is that the OOC games don’t even count. At least the SEC game isn’t as bad as the PAC-12 playoff game this year, with Stanford sitting at home watching a 6-6 UCLA team play for the Rose Bowl. Oh well… At least it wasn’t a “rematch” yawn…
Still, Georgia could have lost every one of their OOC games in addition to losing to South Carolina straight-up, and still been in the CornDawg Bowl today with a 7-5 overall record. Bizarre…

You know another funny thing is it’s quite funny how we forget just how much Crowell means to the team if you look at the GT game one in which he was out we couldn’t even get over 150 yards in rushing offense and then the Kentucky game when he left the game with the injury the running game went south . I’m not in any way saying some of the things Crowell did over the year was right, but don’t be a hypocrite as in be a fan one minute and then quit on him the next minute.
Because of something that to me gets blown out of proportion compared to many things other teams and people in general do.

The ONLY reason UGA has managed to scrum it’s way into the SEC Champ game is because of their ridiculously easy schedule they have played. Just look at the conference records of those teams – Ole Missy, Misery St, TN, KY Jellies, Vandi, panzi-FL – and UGA – with the exception of Auburn – could have very lost any of those games. What’s the conference record of those teams? Like 8-40??

@SSIgator — Serious question. You post on this blog on average about 3 minutes 24×7. Is your hatred of UGA really your number one priority in life? If you’re such a rabid football fan, why is that you prefer to spend all your time on the blog of a team you hate instead of a team you claim to support? Seriously, is it because you actually have no connection to UFL, and your hatred of UGA stems from the fact that they never accepted your college admittance application?
I genuinely feel sorry for people who are so insecure that they devote their entire lives to trying to talk down something they don’t like instead of supporting something they do like. What a sad, pathetic life you must have.

I can’t believe some SEC fans want a PLAYOFF.
You must be CRAZY. The SEC has won MNC’s without the playoff.
A playoff will pit teams that shouldn’t have a chance to win game because of BAD match-ups.
The SEC would; more likely than not, have won the last 5 MNC’s if a playoff was in place.
Bama, LSU, or UGA would have been eliminated before the championship game due to physical play or a match-up not in their favor.

Hold on, is Georgia Southern having a hard time with a second-year football team, at home?!
Leave the football to the big boys in North Georgia.

Chili Dawgs then why does UGA want to play Ga Southern the week before TECH next year? Well, Ga. Sou. will be losing the Senior QB and UGA shouldn’t have much trouble and not learn Much leading to the TECH game.

@1-eyed Jack — thanks for the head’s up on the GT merchandise. Think I’ll stock up on it. It’s perfect for wiping my backside with when the missus forgets to buy the Charmin. We fans do in the loo what the players do on the field. Wipe up with buzzfuzz.

The Dawgs want to play another team that runs the triple floption to prepare for the annual wrecking of teck. As if we need the practice.

Urban Myer – You’re right. Aaron Murray can’t carry Tim Tebow’s jockstrap. That’s because you have it wrapped so tightly around your face. Last time I looked, the crybaby didn’t play for UF anymore. Let’s talk about THIS YEAR, shall we?

But CHILI DAWG……………..WHY? I thought UGA didn’t FEAR the T.O. Tech runs? What extra practice do the Daws need against the High School O Tech runs?

Or maybe because we know we can beat it, easily.
Spend less time blogging, and more time ending your streak of virginity, nerd.

Custom made bird houses with a football flair. Pictured is a UGA helmet. We will do any team. the Head-2-Head/ House Divided can be any teams you wish to have matched. It can be teams that don’t play, but the husband and wife went to different colleges or maybe the children attend different schools. Pleas check it out and EMAIL your request. My friend will forward the emails to me.
Have fun dawgs. It should be an entertaining game.

As I said earlier in the week when Jeff said the Dawgs would be in this game, I remarked “NO CHANCE”. I also said this game wold be a scrimmage. LSU was reading their press clippings the first half until the coaching staff took away their paper.

to be honest i think the AJC staff might be behins GT Bob and St simons. We all know they are Tech followers not Dawgs!
they jumped ship at 0-2 not they are on the fence because we are playing LSU.
you picked your side,
watch as we show our naked A$$E$ in the dome!
LSU is not ready for what is coming at them!
This type of drivel is priceless. 2 – 3 losses every year, and you think you’re relevant. ROFLLMAO
