Mark Richt has Georgia back in SEC title game for first time since 2005. (Brant Sanderlin/AJC)
In Mark Richt’s first five seasons at Georgia, the Bulldogs played in three SEC championship games. In the next five, they played in zero. So this somewhat qualifies as a welcome back to relevancy.
But does the euphoria of playing in the conference title game against LSU on Saturday project to long-term significance?
If Georgia’s 10-game winning streak wasn’t the mere residue of a soft schedule, if Richt once again truly is in command of this program, if the relative off-the-field peace – let’s put Isaiah Crowell aside for a moment – isn’t some aberration, then the Dogs can celebrate much more than a division title.
Georgia may suddenly find itself in a position to flip the power structure in the conference.
That’s not to suggest LSU or Alabama may implode any time soon. (They won’t.) But given the Dogs’ youth and ascent, the maturity and resiliency following the 0-2 start, returning talent, and an expected impact on recruiting, completing for SEC titles may be the norm again. And competing for SEC titles means relevancy on the national landscape, as well.
Athletic director Greg McGarity isn’t that far removed from having to ponder making a coaching change after this season. So he has been careful not to be overly effusive in praise or make grand proclamations in recent weeks. But he didn’t hesitate when asked about the future.
“The potential is there for us to build on what we’ve established this year,” he said. “Things are definitely going in the direction we want them to be going in. But you can never stop having a sense of urgency.
Isaiah Crowell (center), the subject of rumors in recent days, will suit up, but Richt wouldn't address status of his running backs. (Brant Sanderlin/AJC)
“I think we’ve seen in this conference that you can turn things around quickly. That’s evidenced by what Steve [Spurrier] did at Florida. It’s evidenced by what [Nick] Saban has done at Alabama, and what he and [Les] Miles did at LSU. The difficult thing is staying competitive. If your recruiting falls off or you have [coaching] turnover, you can fall behind in a hurry. Look at what happened at LSU before Nick got there. Look at Tennessee now.”
The Dogs don’t need to upset LSU in the Georgia Dome to validate their season. But not getting blown out would help. And they have a legitimate shot to win this. Aaron Murray is playing that well. So are his receivers. So is the defense.
The biggest problem is the running game in general and Crowell in particular. He has been a cyber-rumor with ears in the past few days. Pick one: He malingered at practice; he feuded with teammates; he quit; he got suspended. The only certainty is that his health (lately his ankle) has been an issue all season.
Crowell was at the Dome with his teammates Friday. He is on the “dress-out” list. Richt again declined to comment on the status of any of his running backs. But McGarity chuckled when asked about the suspension rumor, saying he knows nothing of it and commenting, “I’d know, wouldn’t I?”
If the situation is weighing on Richt, he hid it well. He seemed at peace. He referenced his 100th career win at Tennessee, the comeback against Florida, the wins over Auburn, Kentucky and Georgia Tech. It was a news conference of reflection for Richt, which is unusual for him during the season.
“We’ve had a lot of really special times with this team this year,” he said. “I’ve enjoyed it maybe as much as any season that I’ve coached.”
He referenced the 0-2 start, the 6-7 record in 2010 and “all of the things I knew were swirling around, which I’m sure intensified. I didn’t pay a lot of attention to it, but I knew it was out there.”
When a national writer asked Richt if he felt vindicated, he responded: “This year in particular I’ve been very thankful for everything that’s happened. I’m thankful for a group of men who bought in back in January and went through all the things you have to go through to create team atmosphere and chemistry.”
It got them to the title game. It could get them to more in the future.

Enter your comments Everyone stop living in the past. The game is less that 24 hours away in the future which will rapidly become the present. LSU has all the credentials and UGA is playing for national respect. LSU has A LOT to lose and UGA is playing with reckless abandon and NOTHING to lose. I’m glad LSU is becoming consistent over in the west because they were a BOTTOM FEEDER before Saban christened that program. Gonna be a TRUE dawg fight and best of luck to both squads considering the ENTIRE country will be tuned in.
What’s that comin down the track?

Ahhhhh, it’s officially 12/3/11, only 16 hours until UGA gets slapped around
With 25 Seniors, and top juniors being eyed for the NFL Draft, next season should be great without an OL, if we could just face 10 more teams next season who don't end up in any Top 25 Poll - like this season already.
December 3rd, 2011
12:06 am
Outback Bowl at 1pm on Monday faces UGA, as the local media makes great hype about UGA playing for The SEC Championship after winning The SEC Championship in 2002, when the only other SEC team ranked in the Coaches’ Poll Top 25 in 2002 was 4-Loss Auburn.
2005, of course, UGA did beat LSU in The SEC Championship Game, but when the season was over – it is only Mark Richt in the entire Mark Richt era from 2001 to present who won The SEC Championship Game and then LOST his bowl game. This put Mark Richt at a # 10 ranking in every poll for 2005, and left him The SEC’s # 3rd ranked team – ranked worse than LSU at # 6 and Alabama at # 8.
So, this season is really great. Lost to every team who ends up in The Top 25 of any poll. Pitting # 5 SEC Team – UGA Bulldogs – vs The # 1 team in the nation, and leaving at home 1-Loss Alabama who lost to only # 1 LSU ranked # 2 in the nation, leaving at home Arkansas # 6 in the nation who lost only to # 2 Alabama and to # 1 LSU, and of course leaving at home 10-2 South Carolina who beat UGA head-to-head at 10-2 on the season while of course mediocre lying Mark Richt is also 10-2 who lost to 10-2 South Carolina head-to-head, leaving South Carolina ranked AHEAD of UGA in the Polls, obviously.
Last year, was no different with no wins all last season either, against any team who ended the season in the top 25 of any poll.
3 years ago in 2009, Georgia under Mark Richt beat a highly questionable Georgia tek who lost all their games at the end of that season and who beat no good teams themselves either in 2009, but Georgia tek did end up # 13 nationally in the polls. 1 win over the last 3 years over any team who ended up in the top 25.
4 years ago, 2008, Mark Richt began the season # 1 pre-season only to promptly go out and lose to every good team we played all season long giving up consecutive points of 29, 31 and 42 points in a row in the all losses. At the end of the 2008 season, Mark Richt got to play a sorry Michigan State team who beat not 1 team who finished in any top 25 poll either. A battle of bowl opponents, neither of whom beat a team who finished in the top 25.
2007 Mark Richt had completed his lousy sweep by every SEC opponent in a row – 6 Consecutive Losses to every lousy SEC East team in row with his loss to a 6-6 South Carolina who didn’t even play in a bowl game and with his blow-out loss to the vols.
And, the tumultuous year of 2006 when UGA did beat # 9 Auburn but lost 4 games including to 8-loss Vandie.
It’s not been pretty.
WAIT ‘TIL NEXT YEAR. The kick-off hasn’t even happened, as the DISNEYdawgs.com rain supreme over this nation, sitting here squirming in their seats hiding behind their keyboards bragging how great their insights that UGA – once again under Mark Richt has completed an entire season AGAIN having beat not 1 team who ends up in any Top 25 Poll. And, so before we play LSU DISNEYdawgs.com proudly proclaim us winners and project LSU will wonder what freight train just ran them over, and then brag on Heisman Trophy and National Championship for next year – before this game is even kicked-off : Wait ‘Til Next Year.

“I just got tired of talking about it. I didn’t tell our local media guys, so we’ll wait until the game,” Mark Richt lied so as to not have to discuss the 7 Running Backs he gave Scholarships to so that they could play in this SEC Championship Game between # 5-ranked in The SEC UGA vs # 1-ranked in the nation LSU :
MULTIPLE SUSPENSION RUNNING BACKS OF MARK RICHT 2011 :
01-TB Isaiah Crowell Freshman couldn’t hide 2nd suspension
02-TB Carlton Thomas – 3rd suspension again for 4 games
03-TB Boo Malcome – recruited here injured, Suspension too
04-TB Washaun Ealey – Jr. – Transferred to Jacksonville State
05-TB Dontavius Jackson – would be RJr transferred to UAB
06-TB Caleb King – would have been senior 2011, flunked out
07-TB Richard Samuel – ankle surgery Thursday after Florida
“I ain’t talking about it,” Mark Richt proudly proclaims again today in The SEC Press Conference.
No wonder.
And, what good does it do for him to not talk about it, when DIRECTLY then the press asks his boss who hasn’t extended his contract yet, Mr. Greg McGarity a tennis playing player now in charge of the Athletic Department for Michael F. Adam$ ?
“Watching from the sideline as the players milled about on the field Friday, Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity said he wasn’t aware of anything that would keep Crowell from playing in Saturday’s game. “I’d know, wouldn’t I?” Chip Towers reports.
Nice Greg McGarity. Apparently, Greg McGarity did not get the memo that discussing running backs at UGA this season is a no-win discussion and especially for this game – not against a team like the previous 10 in a row who are not ranked today and who will not be ranked – none of the 10.
Oh, but we have a 10-win season.
There are 25 other teams this season alone who also accomplish 10-Win seasons. 25 others besides us, and which of those 25 did Mark Richt beat this entire season ?
NONE.

Your insights are so great. Such as when you proclaimed pre-game against South Carolina that if Mark Richt lost, that they would NEVER POST IN THIS BLOG EVER AGAIN ALL SEASON.

Who cares about the Ga Tech game seriously? If fans continue to base UGA’s success on beating teams we are supposed to beat then the football program is not headed in the right direction. I’ll become “delusional” once UGA starts beating quality opponents. Once more I say do a thorough investigation of the teams UGA beat this year and you should not be so impressed. Those games they won are what should be expected. 10 win season are not good enough especially given this seasons circumstances.

Yes I do notice and I appreciate comments like yours sir. The UGA fan base needs a wake up call but they just won’t do it. Surely they are intelligent enough to see that these 10 wins are average at best. Surely they see that UGA is constantly disrespected by the media, other fan bases, former players, and alumni. I personally would like to see UGA at the least be a respected football program but they are not there yet. The LSU fans on the espn blog I subscribe to do not even mention UGA at all, if they do it is only to make a mockery of them. Even UGA’s player’s feel disrespected by the media and the pollsters and they have the right to feel that way as I do as a fan also. Go Dawgs and promote bringing back respect to our program on the national level.
It would be a good start if we would not have 33 suspended and arrested football players who have been kicked off this 2011 roster by Mark Richt, or just QUIT the program after all their BAD PRESS.

The positive sign for UGA is that the rest of the SEC West sucks. Other than that, UGA is a decent team in a bad division that will continue to lose to better talent in the west & can only sell out a home game when the team is winning more than 2 in a row. This is who you are Georgia.

Schultz, I tld you in January, that the Bulldogs were on the rise , that the Dawg had turned, and that the next 5 or 6 years they would be the team to beat in the East. That Richt would be at UGA for 15 years if he wanted to be and that there would be an SEC title in the next 2 years and a NC shot coming in the next 4 at most and playing for the SEC title for the next 3 years. I did not count on this one but thought it was possible. They are ahead of schedule. You will come around soon, believe me. Shame on you for being a MAJOR part of the media hype that UGA, top to bottom, had to endure. Its hard to beat Tebow ,he won 2 NC’s! UGA should have had a NC shot but LSU went instead and UGA got Hawaii! Sometimes the BETTER team, does not win th econference BECAUSE they were not playing GREAT earlu in the season but WERE at the end. So your RIcht did not win the SEC in the last 5 years or play in the title game, as being monumental in YOUR basis for his job being in question. See why you are not in administration?! LOL. You miss the details brother. You cant see the forest for the trees and due to that you LED the media hype against UGA and it was not justified. Tebow, defectors, #1 draft picks and others leaving early, Cox, freshman QB, rebuilding started in 2009, OL in the ER, injury, after injury, running backs not panning out for several reasons. There were JUSTIFIABLE reasons for UGA being down for 2 years. But guess what you bashed them daily, put the heat on Richt, but its OVER! OK? They made it through with Richts job intact! They will be a force for the next 6 years minimum. The FAVORITE in the East EVERY YEAR over Florida and SC and Tenn(LOL). So you gave your BEST shot and they took it! Now its time to take yours and please, stay off the bandwagon!
Go Dawgs! See you in the dome Sat at 4!

It is true that The SEC East is DOWN and has been down. However, The SEC West has # 1 LSU, # 2 Alabama # 6 Arkansas, and The SEC East has # 12 South Carolina and # 15 UGA (before our blow-out loss this afternoon costing us further in the polls – having already dropped in the rankings Saturday after beating Georgia tek who like Auburn is not ranked in ANY poll today and neither end the season ranked either.
We should have beat South Carolina. If SMU a 7-5 team can beat TCU and TCU beats Boise State, then UGA most assuredly with 11 recruiting classes averaging # 7 rank averaging both Rivals and Scout, should have beat Boise State too.
But, the facts are South Carolina in SEC East is # 12 and UGA SEC East is # 15, even if we did lose head-to-head to South Carolina because we didn’t play Arkansas like South Carolina did.
There has not been a domination of college football in 30 years like what is happening to all of America in college football this season by The SEC.
What ?
Are we to suspect that UCLA Oregon (who LSU beat) is a great PAC-12 Championship Game ?
That Okie State to lost to 6-6 Iowa State is a great match-up in their NO BIG XII CHAMPIONSHIP GAME with Choke-la-homa today ?
That Virginia Tech who already lost to Climpsum Farmers who South Carolina just throttled again here in The SEC East is a great America’s Cupcake Conference CHUMPionship game ?
Let’s be real about it ok ?
Put the 10 Big Ten (12) bowl teams up against The SEC’s 9 and let’s see who wins the big bowl games, ok ?

Wow! The negative Neds are on the board tonight. I sure wish that all the Richt nay-sayers would just clam up. Everybody is moaning and groaning about Crowell’s durability and that he is a slacker and a bad apple. He is a kid people. Everybody wanted this guy. He has been playing hurt all season. Have you ever had a rib injury? I have. Binding them doesn’t help at all. You can’t breathe. Sure it would be great if he hadn’t gotten hurt but he did and that weighs on a guy. He will play tomorrow and he will make a difference and then all the blah blah blah will fade away. Look at Lattimore. He was hurt last year too. He is supposed to be such a bruiser but he has missed quite alot of time to be only a sophomore. Isaiah is good sized but not BIG. He is a slasher. He is learning what it takes to be an SEC back. Moreno didn’t play as a freshman. Who is to say he wouldn’t have had the same problems? Give the kid a break. The rumor mill always has some crap going. Attitude problems, drugs,… it’s all hearsay. Crowell’s first 2 carries against Kentucky were for 6 yards apiece. His ankle was injured trying to drive the pile and get more yards. He was giving his all and got hurt. It happens. He sat out last week. If we had needed him the coaches would have sent him in. We didn’t. He’ll play tomorrow. Maybe he’ll start. Maybe he won’t. But win or lose he will have made some kind of positive contribution. He might even be the star. Give the kid a break.
Dawgs win… by less than 10 points. Unashamedly a Bulldog. I bleed red and black. Win or lose, I love my Dawgs! Sick’em!
