Georgia has far better than ‘puncher’s chance’ against LSU

Aron White and Christian Robinson punctuate Georgia's return by planting the school flag at Tech.

Aron White, Christian Robinson punctuate UGA's return with school flag . (Johnny Crawford)

This is the column that I didn’t think I would be writing six weeks ago, when Georgia fizzled and nearly self-destructed at Vanderbilt, and a five-game winning streak seemed like the furthest thing from Mark Richt’s mind.

This is the column that didn’t seem plausible three months ago when I looked up at the scoreboard and saw, “Boise State 35, Georgia 21” after looking down on the Georgia Dome field to see a Bulldogs team get beat physically by a Mountain West Conference team and play flat emotionally — the worst possible exacta for a hyped-up season opener.

This is the column that says Georgia can beat LSU.

This is not to diminish anything LSU has accomplished this season. How can one diminish an SEC team going 12-0? The Tigers have played and beaten seven teams that were ranked at the time they played. That includes No. 3 Oregon to start the season (40-27), No. 2 Alabama in Tuscaloosa (9-6 in overtime) and No. 3 Arkansas (41-17). LSU is as legitimate and proven as any No. 1 team that has come along in years.

Which doesn’t mean it can’t lose.

No. I’m not drunk on the Kool-Aid. Something changed in Athens. Maybe the 33-28 escape at Vanderbilt was a wake-up call. Maybe it was just a case of a young team slowly gaining confidence. At the very least, we know players reaffirmed that they believed in — and would follow — their head coach. Because a team doesn’t just rally from a 17-3 deficit to beat its nemesis (Florida), destroy Auburn 45-7 and spin a 10-game winning streak after a 0-2 start because it’s suddenly getting bounces.

After the body-slamming of Auburn, when it became clear the Dogs would win the SEC East, many felt they would have a “puncher’s chance” in the conference title game against the winner of the West, LSU or Alabama. But that short-changes Georgia.

When I hear puncher’s chance, I think George Foreman vs. Michael Moorer. In 1994, when Moorer was the heavyweight champion, he won nine straight rounds against the unranked 45-year-old Foreman. Then he got stupid. Foreman suckered him in. He landed a concrete right hand to Moorer’s porcelain chin. When Moorer looked up from the canvas, he saw little blue songbirds circling above him.

Three months after the loss to Boise State, the Bulldogs return to the Georgia Dome Saturday against LSU. They don’t need to rely on one lucky punch to win. They have become that good. They are playing with a rhythm, a confidence and an edge that we haven’t seen since 2007.

A year ago, when I wrote that Richt deserved to come back this season because of what he had accomplished in Athens, there was a backlash. Many fans wanted him fired. I wasn’t ready to make that leap. But neither did I share the confidence of Richt’s defenders, particularly after the season’s first two games. An unraveling seemed imminent. So did a job change. Clearly, that’s not happening now.

LSU is rolling. But so is Georgia. Aaron Murray is the best quarterback the LSU defense will face this season, and in the last four games he has completed 68 percent of his passes for 14 touchdowns and two interceptions. The offense is loaded with receivers: Orson Charles, Malcolm Mitchell, Tavarres King, et al. (Just when Georgia Tech figured it had everybody covered Saturday, a freshman, Chris Conley, popped open in the end zone. Chris Conley? He’s UGA’s sixth-leading receiver.)

The assumption here is that with Isaiah Crowell being held out Saturday with an ankle injury, he and Carlton Thomas (who had only a few carries against Tech) will be ready for LSU and provide balance to the offense.

Defensively, the Dogs get better by the week. They throttled the Tech’s option offense Saturday and held the Jackets to 10 points until a meaningless touchdown in the final minutes.

Boise State and South Carolina combined for eight offensive touchdowns in the first two games. In the 10 since, Georgia has allowed only 12 offensive touchdowns. That includes one or none in seven of the 10 games. This is the second-best defense LSU will face this season. They managed only three field goals (one in overtime) against the only opponent with a better one, Alabama.

Georgia doesn’t have a mere puncher’s chance in the SEC championship. Georgia has a legitimate chance. The team that will play in the Georgia Dome on Dec. 3 is not the same one that played there on Sept. 3.

Some things you just don’t see coming.

“LSU is undefeated, but they only have two noteworthy wins. They beat Oregon at home (in the season opener), and of course they beat Bama by 3 in overtime in Tuscaloosa. Of those, the win at Alabama is way more impressive. Otherwise, they’ve beaten teams they should’ve beaten. Good grief, they beat West Virginia, who went on to lose to Syracuse and Louisville. Arkansas has been ranked way too high all year, and LSU exposed them for what they were. LSU’s remaining schedule looks strangely like Georgia’s.”

This has to be one of the funniest posts of the season!

Well who has Georgia beat that’s noteworthy? Yes it’s noone as in zero. LSU has beaten 4 teams in the current AP top 25 while the Dawgs have beaten no one. In fact Georgia has lost to 2 teams in the current polls, Boise State and South Carolina.

The only way Georgia beats LSU is if the Tigers play their worst game of the season while the Dawgs play its best game.

This is not to slight Georgia at all as they have had a solid season.

There is a reason Vegas has LSU by 12.5.

All in all, as a Dawg fan I’d much rather play LSU than Alabama.

Red Stick, “There is a reason Vegas has LSU by 12.5″

Yeah…it’s all about perception. LSU is ranked #1 and UGA #14. If you put UGA on a neutral field with half of the teams in front of them, they would beat them easily. Kansas St? Houston? Arkansas? Va Tech? etc. Most people are suckers and give UGA no chance…that is why the line is such, but while LSU is better…this is far from a gimme. Some of the Tiger fans crack me up…make it sound like they are playing Kentucky or Tenn…get real.

UGA couldn’t beat Kentucky, Vandy, or Florida easily but would beat the top 10 teams in the country easily. You have got to be kidding me.

@wareagle: thanks bud. i’ll be pulling for y’all in whatever bowl you end up in. 7-5 is nothing to hang your head about given the talent you lost and the schedule you play.

@bayoubengal11: what i’m hearing is that you think LSU is good. i heartily agree, and look forward to saturday, when you’ll find out that georgia is much better than you think. we most definitely are not scared, and have plenty to make you worry.

@blackout: i don’t think LSU can “toy” with us. a homer’s opinion, but i truly believe we’re gonna give the tigers all they want in atlanta. i like their overall depth and athleticism over ours for sure, but i think we present certain schematic and personnel challenges that they haven’t faced this year, especially on the offensive side of the ball. it’s a great challenge for our team, and whatever happens they’re gonna get our best shot. looking forward to a great one in tuscaloosa next year, and plenty of friendly banter until then. congrats on great win in iron bowl. By rule….you cannot have 3 teams from a conference go to a bcs bowl. It seems as though they are already penciling in Alabama to play in the championship game. If Ga pulls off the upset…what then? Ga gets an automatic bid into the bcs by rule. What if that happens and Va Tech loses to Clemson and Ok St loses to Ok? Could Ga go to the bcs championship game? A 2 loss sec champ should get the nod over any other 2 loss conf champ becuase the sec is clearly the best. Where am I wrong here? This could very well be the biggest Ga football game since Penn St in 1982.

If i was LSU and ranked No.#1 i would be fully confident that they could destroy a 12th Ranked Georgia team. LSU clearly had no competition until they got outplayed by Alabama and the tiger fans know that.
Takes alot of luck to go undefeated and LSU has just simply found ways to win.
Its part of football.
By all standards LSU should beat Georgia soundly but they need help to win. I think the only way LSU can win is by turnovers and bias officiating. What a mess it would be if Georgia beat the No.#1 team.
Look for some flagrant calls against Georgia next saturday. Watch and learn what happens when big dollars are involved in outcomes.
Sure LSU can win but so can Georgia. They are both very similar but Georgia has a better QB and RB if he plays and more weapons to throw to than LSU.
I give the edge to the front 4 of LSU in Defense but our front 4 are no slouches either. Our flaw is Special Teams and Kicking which might be the difference in the game. It hurt Alabama didnt it?
Dont go buy those BCS Tickets yet Tiger Fans because it might be hard trying to find someone to take them at discounted rates.
Yeah it might be a blow out but i doubt it. Im sure Georgia wont stomp all over that Tigers tail by 21 pts either. But its doable for Georgia to come out and suprise any team. LSU thinks about it with Georgia but like all those naysayers out there, Georgia’s first 2 games throws doubt in having any chance.
I’ll tell you this………….. i hope LSU overlooks Georgia and is setting their sights on a BCS Championship Game with most likely Oklahoma State.
I think like the fans here that say how bad Georgia did and their weak opponents they played, that LSU will walk all over Georgia.
I want them to take everything lightly and not worry. I can imagine that all the football players fans, friends and relatives are telling them that it wont even be close, it’ll be easy and quick.
By the time they get to Atlanta, LSU will be so consumed by who their opponent will be in the BCS that they will forget about who their playing.
Hey we have no excuse for being 10-2. We’re not saying that Georgia is the best team but what we’re telling you is that you can throw all that BS

Murray won’t get the time he had in the Auburn or Georgia Tech game to find an open receiver by staying in the pocket . He needs to roll out of the pocket if it won’t contain LSU’s blitz. He will be throwing a lot more passes in the stand’s and running the ball but what can’t happen is Murray getting frustrated or try to force his passes before they materialize into an open receiver. If he does we will have a replay of the South Carolina game where we beat ourselves before the other team even has a chance to beat us themselves. Murray has got to realize that against a great team like LSU you won’t have many chances to make big play’s but when that time comes we need to take advantage of it. Our defense need’s to put pressure on Jefferson to keep him from running 20 times . 5 to 10 yard’s every time he runs.
Believe it or not Georgia matches better against LSU than Alabama or Arkansas. If we have the stamina , strength, depth and confidence to play 60 minutes we can most definitely beat LSU. They have always had a mental block when they play us and I hope the first time somebody runs over one of our player’s the whole team won’t give up. LSU will play hard for 60 minutes and every Dawg need’s to be ready with the same commitment.
Every player for Georgia need’s to realize that a win mean’s a BCS bowl game and with 2 losses that would be amazing but equally important it will guarantee a top 7 pre- season ranking for next year.

Nebraska in the OUTBACK Bowl no matter what we do

November 28th, 2011
5:53 am

Nebraska lost to UNRANKED 6-6 Northwestern.
UGA plays Nebraska in our bowl game.

We have lost to Nebraska in our only game against them.

Nebraska is ranked # 20 in AP Poll. Nebraska will not be knocked out of the final AP Poll Top 25 by us beating them – it would be close but they might hold on to a ranking – like # 25 or # 24 maybe.

Ohio State is UNRANKED at 6-6. Notre Dame is UNRANKED.

We are the # 5 team in The SEC. Beat LSU, and we are still # 5 team in The SEC in every single solitary poll. Lose to LSU and we are still the # 5 team in The SEC. There are 5 teams in The SEC. There is no # 6 SEC team.

2007, LSU beat two (2) teams who finished in the AP Poll Top 10. Mark Richt beat NONE. Mark Richt LOST to 2 really sorry football teams, including especially 6-6 South Carolina who did not even play in a bowl game. And, Mark Richt was hosed by a rule that doesn’t exist – that a team cannot play for the BCS NC when they didn’t even win their division ? NOT HARDLY. LSU was FAR SUPERIOR to Mark Richt, not only in 2007, not only again this 2011 season, but for all 11 years of the Mark Richt era with LSU’s NINE (9) wins in the Mark Richt era vs teams who finished in the AP Poll Top 10 – including 3 already this season and are a 2 point pick to beat Alabama. That would be 4 wins vs teams who finish in the AP Poll Top 10 by LSU this season, ALONE – and THAT is MORE WINS THAN MARK RICHT HAS HIS ENTIRE 11 YEARS HERE over teams who finish in the AP Poll Top 10.

We are not going to the Cotton Bowl.

We are going to the Outback Bowl.

Nothing that happens Saturday alters that one iota.

Oklahoma State does NOT deserve to play in the BCS NC game. They cannot. It cannot happen. It will not happen. It does not happen.

This is great for The SEC that Alabama is consensus # 2 in the nation. Well, they deserve it. Not only will Alabama play in the BCS NC game this season, but I felt that they were the better team when the 2 teams played earlier this season. Alabama beat a team who is ending the season in the AP Poll top 10 Arkansas currently # 6 in the AP Poll, and Alabama beat # 21 in the BCS Rankings today Penn State. Alabama’s only LOSS is in overtime when their kicker missed four (4) field goals in the game, losing by 3 to the Consensus # 1. Compare this again to UGA in 2007 with Mark Richt whining in the press that he was hosed in 2007 with his TWO (2) losses including to 6-6 South Carolina not even in a bowl game and sorry vols team he lost to while Mark Richt beat NO TEAM who finished the season in the AP Poll top 10, as Alabama has done this season. Alabama deserves and whether you whine about it more this week or not, Alabama plays LSU on the national stage while we are not 1 of the Top 4 teams in The SEC AGAIN THIS SEASON, WHEN THERE ARE ONLY 4 SEC TEAMS. We are going to go DOWN in the rankings further. We dropped to # 14 this week from # 13 in the BCS Rankings playing a team we should no longer schedule. We beat them and dropped in the BCS Rankings. This is also not a hose job on Mark Richt. Mark Richt simply has NOT DONE what he SHOULD HAVE DONE at UGA. He LOST to every ranked team he played this season, and rattled off 10 victories in a row, NOT 1 OF WHICH IS RANKED IN ANY POLL WHATSOEVER TODAY.

ALABAMA PLAYS LSU as it should be.

SEC BCS Championship # 6 in a ROW, while Mark Richt isn’t even 1 of the top 4 SEC teams this season. 4th best coach in the country my oh my.

If we play in the Cotton Bowl, it would be against Kansas State. Cotton Bowl is stuck that The SEC East South Carolina or SEC East Georgia would play in that game. South Carolina is ranked higher than us in the Coaches’ Poll. South Carolina is ranked higher than us in the BCS Rankings. We are ranked higher than South Carolina in the AP Poll, but after we lose to LSU – having BEAT NO TEAM RANKED IN ANY POLL TODAY and having LOST to South Carolina head-to-head – we will NOT get the nod for the Cotton Bowl, but South Carolina.

As I was reading these comments and this story, I actually thought this was part of some elaborate joke. There are actually people out there who think that GA will win this weekend? Okay, I know, I know… everyone wants to believe that the underdawg has a shot. Based on your comments, it is clear that the only football games you folks have watched all season have been Georgie games. So, for those uneducated Dawg fans out there (all of you), let’s look at some facts…

BSU rocked you at home, you had all year to prepare for it so “getting surprised” just doesn’t cut it. SCAR, although full strength at the time, ran up the score on you. You scored quite a bit as well, but let’s face it, Carolina’s defense is not as good as you think your defense is. You have since then played SEC nobodys, and even still… Ole Miss gave you a scare in the first half, another two minutes and Vandy beats you, a couple of correctly called pass interferences and FL beats you, and playing like you did in the first half of the game and KY beats you. The only team you beat decisively was a clueless Auburn, but only because you were trying to make a statement to last year’s AU team. News flash, the players you are mad at are now in the NFL. And I haven’t even begun to talk about the strengths of the Tigers. Compared to them, you have no class, no game, no talent, and no chance.

This coming weekend, the Bulldogs will be exposed for the yappy little puppies that you really are, the way the rest of the nation sees you, and you will feel the effects of your weak schedule for the full 60 minutes. Enjoy the punishment.

Maybe next year… Lol, what am I saying???

I will be the first to admit that UGA has had a good season with 10 wins in a row. Richt and staff are to be commended for refocusing the team after an 0-2 start. But, having said that, let’s not get too big-headed and carried away. UGA has not beaten a currently ranked team. They have faced the level of competition faced by LSU. While LSU was beating teams like Oregon, UGA was beating Coastal Carolina. Maybe UGA will win, who knows? That’s why they play the game. All I’m saying is that LSU’s “body of work” far surpasses what UGA has done this season.

How Can You Be a National Champion Game, if you don’t win or even play in you’re Conference Championship? That is the predecent that kept UGA out in 2007 an dother teams out in other years.

Why is Alabama exempt from this?
They are not any better than any other one-loss team.
They certainly are not a great team. Alabama’s offense is ONE-dimensional: Trent Richardson.
AND Didn’t LSU already beat them once?

We know LSU can beat Alabama (They Did it Already).

Can they stop an offense with an actual QB and WRs and TEs? Who Knows?
Can LSU Stop Houston from gaining 600 yards. Who Knows?
Or Stanford? Maybe/ maybe not.
Oregon and Va Tech – Probably?

But one thing we do know for 100% Certainly- LSU already beat Alabama.

If fact, who says Alabama even beat Stanford, Oregon, Va Tech, or Boise St? I feel quite certain that Alabama can NOT score even points to keep up with Houston.

My point Alabama is had a chance. They lost. They are not any better than any other one-loss team.

I hope Georgia wins. The national press are making the SEC Championship a non event and the question at this point is who will play LSU, in the NC. Wouldn’t an upset work well in this story. Everybody looks at Georgia’s weak schedule and sees marginal improvement from the teams that lost two in the first of the season. Now Tech is part of that weak schedule. In a way, heartburn, the Dawgs are playing for us. In the meanwhile the local press has got to play Georgia up to fill that venue here in Atlanta. If you listen to the national press there is no reason to show up. I don’t have a clue but wouldn’t it be nice to see the Dawgs win.
