Common scene: UGA (Chris Conley) scoring, Tech (Rod Sweeting) watching. (Brant Sanderlin)
When a team looks flat, lost and beat up and loses 31-17 to its chief rival — and it really wasn’t even that close — generally no player or area is immune to criticism.
Physically, Georgia Tech got hammered Saturday by Georgia. There were mental lapses. Emotionally, the Jackets seemed to lack a pulse on their home field against the only opponent that usually defines their season — which probably is the greatest indictment of all, considering the 364 days of buildup on a campus where the rallying cry is, “To hell with Georgia.”
“You have to play with everything you have. We didn’t,” linebacker Steven Sylvester said.
How does that happen? Were they saving it for the Sun Bowl?
But Tech’s biggest problem Saturday against Georgia was no different than what its biggest problem has been for four years under coach Paul Johnson. Their defense stinks. They can’t stop anybody or intimidate anybody. Two many games come down to pinball games.
Bad defense got Dave Wommack fired after two seasons. Bad defense under Al Groh should leave his future uncertain at the end of a two-year contract. Groh hasn’t said definitively that he wants to come back, but the question Johnson needs to ask himself is: Do I want him back?
This is no minor issue. Johnson has won 34 games in four seasons. The Jackets’ 8-4 record this season going into their bowl finale certainly is not worse than most projected at the outset of this season, and it’s probably better. But when you have a defense that ranks 43rd in yardage, 56th in points allowed and 89th in third-down conversion, you’re not going anywhere.
Georgia is good, very good. The Dogs have better players and are as hot as any team in the country, save LSU (next week’s opponent in the SEC championship). But when the Bulldogs accumulated 254 yards on their first four possessions, this game was over. Georgia didn’t even punt until its sixth possession. By then, it was 24-10.
Johnson’s view of his defense’s inability to stop the Dogs: “It’s deflating. I think it deflates the whole team.”
The option offense isn’t built to play from behind. Neither is quarterback Tevin Washington. When the Jackets tried to open it up, Washington was intercepted twice on Tech’s first three possessions in the second half.
But remember where the problems started.
Georgia’s superiority on the field shouldn’t discount that Groh’s 3-4 defense got worse late in the season and has failed in the big picture. Tech is no better off on defense today than it was when they fired the last guy. Nationally, under Wommack the Jackets finished 28th (2008) and 54th (2009) in total defense. They were 64th in Groh’s first season and went into this week 43rd. Scoring defense in the past four seasons: 20th and 38th, respectively, under Wommack; 37th and 56th (entering the week) under Groh.
Progress?
Johnson is an offensive-oriented coach. When he goes consecutive series without a touchdown, he goes postal, but even he recognizes the importance of having some semblance of a defense, or he wouldn’t have made a change two years ago.
Groh wasn’t made available for comment Saturday. Just as well. He might need some time to figure out how to spin this one. There was an expected transition period with the switch to the 3-4 defense last year, but it’s not any better now. The Jackets still don’t have the players to play it, particularly up front.
Young teams should get better as the year goes on. But Tech has back-slid since a 31-17 upset of Clemson, with mediocre defensive performances against Virginia Tech, Duke and Georgia.
Sylvester on the difference since the Clemson game: “I think it’s just playing with emotion. If you turn on the film of the Clemson game you can see how emotional we were. I feel like we came out flat the last couple of games. We didn’t have as much energy as we should have, and our attention to detail wasn’t [good enough].”
Players should be able to get up for its rival, but that’s also on coaches for not having them prepared. Johnson and Groh share that responsibility.
But the head coach isn’t going anywhere. Groh, we’re not so sure. And when Tech fails, it’s usually not because of the offense.

Our Passing D is what we knew it was except for 1 game. Tevin Washington is what we thought he was all season.
Still don’t know WHO was supposed to cover the TE cutting across the middle. It was there all day.
Tevin threw some of the worst passes I have ever seen. he was not on the same page with the WRs ever today. The First was an easy TD if the B-Back sees hill and throws it earlier instead of the Sky High DUCK in the middle of the field.
Tech didn’t play MEAN enough. tech never looked like they were Pi$$ed enough to want to win.
Congrats Tevin Washington. You have 1 more game as Tech’s QB. Please make some plays in the bowl game.

Their special teams stink too, even today was the special teams best game. UGA 2nd half kickoff return really hurt the jackets & not fielding punts.
CPJ should not have started throwing so soon in the second half…how could Johnson not know Tevin can’t throw?

I agree, the defense sucks. We couldn’t stop a bowl of jelly. We need a qb who can be effective and pass when needed with some authority to give balance. Once this offense has balance…LOOK OUT! Groh has been a failure and we can’t land the stud 300 lbs guy to draw double teams in the middle of the 3 4 or take up space. Groh tends to be soft as oatmeal. He isn’t aggressive. Give us tenuta back and i’m happy. This defense had fire under him.
Vad lee must win this job next year or its more of the same for GT. We have 9 back on offense and 8 back on defense next year. No excuse why we shouldn’t be much better next year. How you come out and get hammered on your home field by a team that is no better than VT is perplexing. Uga wanted it more and kicked our ass on both lines. Pitiful showing at BD today. Pitiful

The problem with the defense is the offense. The defense of option teams, just like spread teams, do not get practice time against pro or power offenses. Also, the limited practice time of college teams makes defense of a team with a different offense from what their team is playing very difficult. I don’t believe Paul J will ever have a strong defense.

We suck. Poor offensive play calling creates problems for the defense on occasion. We also know that the special teams are a joke most days. I am not thrilled with Groh’s defense but he shouldn’t get all the blame. At some point the head coach has to accept responsibility for something. The talent gap on the field was huge today. We just don’t have those types of athletes in our program.

@ rs dawg, we don’t deserve a bowl after that showing today. The sun bowl was our likely destination but we may have turned them off after what everyone saw today. UGA is better than GT, recruit better, have more speed and perhaps betters coaching staff. I just can’t wrap my mind around such a poor showing vs a team that has beaten your arses over the past few decades. Where was any intensity? I knew that coming in if we didn’t get pressure on murray and be able to attack well up the middle an on the perimeter with our option…it would be a long day. IT WAS!
PJ has got to open the offense up a bit more moving forward. Get a qb who can run and complete better than 55% of his passes and let’s get a new DC who has shown RESULTS on the field with a defense!!!!! VAD LEE, PLEASE BE THE PLAYER EVERYONE TOUTS YOU TO BE! It’s your job to lose next year!!!!

As long as CPJ is our HC and running the triple-gimmick, best be good with 8-3’s, 7-5’s, 6-4’s, No more ACC’s, maybe a Georgia win every 6 to 7 years (when they are down), a pourous Defense and the inability to recruit ANY players…repeat “any” for effect… that ever want to execute the modern day forward pass as a weapon. Bad hire, bad choice, the day they signed this guy….who quite frankly…is perfectly happy coaching a high school team….as long as he is free to run his triple-gimmick.

I think you are giving Johnson a free pass. His strategy in the second half was poor. You’ve got to know what your QB is capable of. When the other team is driving it up and down the field, you have to shorten the game by running the ball. 17 points, 7 of it after Georgia effectively gave up on the game, is not going to win this rivalry game.

We are the 3rd youngest team in division 1 football. I don’t think we will stink next year but clearly we need to find a better DC and a better QB. I guess that’s the only way you can justify getting whipped by a ‘mediocre’ Georgia squad who hasn’t played anyone and is ‘over-rated’? Don’t you think your offense just stunk today because the Dawg defense is 4 real? Have you thought your poor defensive performance had more to do with playing against a pretty dadgum good offense with one of the top QB’s in the SEC? Just saying… And as for Paul Johnson & the rest of you ACC homers, welcome back to SEC football, where we separate the men from the boys. Good Luck next year! Go Dawgs!

Come on folks. Tech was ranked 2 in the nation in rushing, and they averaged almost 40 points a game. Their offense controls games via the option, and they win and have a good and ranked team. UGA is the highest ranked defense they have played and they didn’t control the ground and they looked bad, but Georgia made them look bad. If Murray hadn’t missed those wide open passes in the second half it would have been a blowout.

@JB. UGA defense may get shredded next week, and the offense may get stuffed. But, that would have more to do with LSU talent than Georgia’s ineptitude. Tech should hold their heads up high. You guys had a good season with some great victories. You guys need to find a dual threat QB who can throw out of the option look and I think you will be almost impossible to stop. Defense sets the tone for the game. Look at home much UGA has changed since Richt hired a new DC. He coaches with great passion — it spreads to the players and the offense feeds off of it. He is the best coach UGA has had on defense since Erk. Even Van Gorder’s defense did not play to this level. Just wait until next year as the players really get to know the system.

Don’t you get it? Gtu will never have a good defense with Johnson there because everything in the program is built around his offense. The defense practices against scout teamers who are too busy spending all summer practicing their mesh to actually learn how to run a passing offense.

Tech will play either Elon College or Millsaps College of Jackson, Mississippi or Rhodes College of Memphis. They announce the opponent on Sunday to play in the John Belk Bowl in front of at least 9,000 fans and FREE inner city kids from Charlotte and Greensboro.
The Alumni of GT are very, very upset with this season and the rumors are hot and heavy about CPJ being on THE HOT SEAT.
CPJ has not won a ACC title, nor a bowl and his losses to UGA have been in Grant Field, which is apparently UGA’s SECOND MOST FAVORITE STADIUM TO PLAY IN outside of Sanford Stadium.
The GT alumni are recognizing now that athletic teams with speed and decent D lines can handle the Wishbone and cause it to look scattered and confused, like GT was today.
Yes, Paul Johnson IS on the HOT SEAT.

Schultz – Pretty ignorant to hang the entire loss on Yech’s D… that offense is a one-dimensional joke. And that one dimension can’t stand up to a stout D like UGA. And Moobs should take plenty of blame for the D also… he’s focused the entire program on his simplistic offensive system to the detriment of the entire team. I hope they keep him for life… I can live with losing to the Nerds 9% of the time.

Dawg ‘85 — So I’m ignorant? … The offense has been one-dimensional for four years. The offense got them to an Orange Bowl. I’m not saying I’m a fan of the offense — I’m not. It has obvious shortcomings, the most obvious being that it’s difficult to play from behind. But the story was the Tech defense because it put the offense in a hole. Dogs couldn’t be stopped when the game really was on the line.

One more year like this one and I’m guessing it will be CPJ’S turn on the hot seat…
Defense has always been his achilles heel. I do get that it can be difficult to get a front line running back or quarter back because of the scheme ran. But defense is a different story. Tenuta recruited very well.

Isn’t it about time someone started to question Paul “walk on water” Johnson about his ability to win? The only time he can beat UGA is with another coach’s players. He still can’t field a team that plays defense. Winning 9 games in the creampuff ACC may be a big time accomplishment to a few folks, but if you must be in that dreadful conference at least win it regularly. Don’t get me wrong, I like the system Johnson has, I think it can win ACC championships on a regular, but Johnson’s not delivering. He seems to have leveled out as Tech prepares to lose another bowl game. In other words, I hope people will stop walking on eggshells around Johnson because he’s done nothing to deserve it and the hype on his abilities has long since past. Time to put up or shut up Johnson.

Sometimes the offense is going to struggle against solid defenses. This happens to every O in the country. When that happens, the D has to rise up and make stops, i.e. Ala vs LSU. We have stopped noone except Clemson all year. You can’t outscore everyone when they have a solid D. Gailey had great D’s and no O. CPJ needs a solid D.

I have been talking all year about getting rid of Big Al. Now will you believe me? Any time you take a losing head coach from another team and make him your defensive coach, you are asking for problems. If you remember Virginia never had a good defense, so why did CPJ hire him. Hell I would give up a winning season just to get rid of CPJ and Big Al. So it would take us a few years to rebuild for a pro style offense but at least it wouldn’t be a triple option. The triple option is a Loser. Also how can you have a defense when you can’t practice against a pro style offense. Washington wouldn never make it on another team as a quarterback. Maybe a running back but I doubt it. Thanks Tech for another lousy year. Bet you money we lose in the Bowl game to. Probably the blue carpet bowl…..

This man cannot recruit, period.
I suggest Rad contact Mike Leach and see if we can get him down here and run the spread -we would then have a fighting chance against UGA because no college team can ever put more than a couple of good d-backs on the field at any given time – someone will be open.
Leach knows what to do to beat teams that generally are athletically superior – {i.e. Texas} and you know what? qb’s and wr would want to come to Tech to play. And that would give UGA fits!
Come on Taz, ante up and let’s do the buy-out and get CPJ and his crew outta here so we can get a real coach.

maybe it was simply a matter of one team had superior athletes. I don’t think the offense that Tech used would have changed the results at all. I do believe that if Tech had had all of the breaks it might have had a chance, but it didn’t and that was that. Also. field position in the second half played a large part in UGA’s dominance. The greatest coach in the world would not have won this game for Tech without the breaks. It is probably the same way the UGA LSU game will be. Georgia can win if they get the breaks, if they go to LSU, it will end with the expected results.

How can anyone say that the TECH’s defense is the reason for TECH losing again to UGA. Tech’s offense is fun to watch when it works, but if you can’t throw it effectively then you can’t compete for championships. Legitimate WR’s and QB’s are wasting their time going to TECH. The Petulant Task Master and the Triple option are perfect for DII or the Service Academies. Schultz should cover Little League Soccer. Any kind of american style football is well over his head.

It seems fitting that some Tech fans want redemption for their loss to UGA via LSU. It really shows how hopeless and desperate some of your fans are to beat UGA even when your team loses to UGA. Belittle UGA’s education, call Georgia fans rednecks (last time I checked UGA has more players from the city than Ga Tech does), and calling the UGA players derogatory terms such as thugs and drug dealers. Well look at the facts 62-39-5 All time versus tech. Now that’s winning. Go ahead and make fun of the strength of schedule but last time I checked its not UGA’s fault that the teams we played this year are not any good, it is their fault. “We run this state”

Dear irrational Tech fans and Paul Johnson haters in general,
Post-Dodd coaches at the Georgia Institute of Technology
Bud Carson W-L 27-27(best season 9-3) Carson wasn’t an idiot. He went on to win 3 Super Bowls as the brains behind Pittsburgh’s “Steel Curtain” defense.
Bill Fulcher W-L 12-10-1(best season 7-4-1)
Pepper Rogers W-L 34-31-2(best season 7-4) Rogers previously took Kansas-effing Kansas-to an Orange Bowl and won 9 games as coach of UCLA prior to arriving at Tech.
Bill Curry W-L 31–43–4(best season 9-2-1) Curry had 3 losing seasons and went 5-5-1 his last season before taking the head coaching job at Alabama.
Bobby Ross W-L 31-26-1(best season 11-0-1) Ross had a successful run, but followed the national championship with a 8-5 season. Prior to arriving at Tech Ross went 39-19 at Maryland and later took the San Diego Chargers to the Super Bowl.
Bill Lewis W-L 11-19(best season 5-6) Worst coach in Tech history
George O’Leary W-L 52-33(best season 10-2) O’Leary had to clean up after Bill Lewis and had some successful seasons, however, his last Tech squad only won 7 games.
Chan Gailey W-L 44-32(best season 9-5 ACC Coastal Champs) Gailey was a successful NFL coordinator and coach. He is currently the head coach of the Buffalo Bills. Gailey ran a pro set and he only had one recruiting class that ranked higher than Johnson.
Paul Johnson W-L 34-18(best season 11-3 Orange Bowl appearance) Highest winning percentage in his first four years of any Georgia Tech coach in the post-Dodd era.

Now the stark reality is that we are 40lbs overweight, our hair is thinning, our wives and kids are driving us insane, and we pull for UGA or Tech because our real alma maters of Clayton State and Athens Tech has yet to field a team. I hear Bruce Springstein’s “Glory Days” in the background.

All this talk about Georgia’s strength of schedule is legit.
We’ve played in the SEC, but we haven’t beaten the top teams this year.
While I’m a Dog fan, I have to admit the reality of the situation.
I also must admit that anything can happen in football.
If UGA plays a mistake free game, they will most likely win.

Saban you have to be a tech fan. You use Alabama to mask your true identity from the other bloggers. Why would a Alabama fan whose team is going to play in its second national championship in 3 years even care about UGA football other than recruiting. Sorry your team lost today sir it is really unfortunate. LSU beating UGA wont take away from the season UGA has put together but this game for tech is equivalent to the national championship game. I disagree Mr. Shultz, UGA is NOT a very good team as you stated. I’m not even sure I can give them much more than a “decent” rating.
Do you realize, record wise, UGA’s BEST win was today over an 8-4 (5-3 ACC), 1-AA GT team?
Optimism is a given after a 10-game winning streak (see GT fans after GT’s 6-0 start)
UGA will lose next week, and lose big. Why do I know this? The reason is in the W-L records of their SEC opps & GT in the 10-game winning streak.
GA’s SEC opponents (they beat) will finish with records of 37-47 overall, and 14-42 in SEC play. FOURTEEN (14) Ws! This has to be the easiest SEC schedule in the league’s history.
NOT A SINGLE SEC TEAM UGA BEAT FINISHED THE SEASON WITH A BETTER THAN .500 RECORD. Only Auburn (4-4) finished .500 all others where under .500, with UT posting its worst ever SEC record (1-7).
Ole Miss 0-8
Vandy, UK, Miss St, 2-6, each
UF 3-5
It’s really hard to believe they were ALL as bad as they were.
And then there’s GT. Not a real shocker from this GT fan that the Jackets lost. As a season ticket holder I’ve been to all home games, and watched all away games. They can’t defend the pass. Heck, even DUKE put 31 pts on the board vs. the Jackets. So what’s so great about UGA’s 10-game winning streak?
LSU (and the team UGA loses to in their bowl) are going to show us all just how impressive the win streak was, and it won’t be pretty.

Dawg fans….please stay on your discussion board. Wanted to make a snide remark about the dawgs but I’m above that. Sorry about loss of Larry Munson…one of a kind and awesome. Ref Tech: MAJOR PROBLEM IS DEFENSE CAN’T PRACTICE AGAINST A TRADITIONAL OFFENSE. They probably excel against the CPJ’s option, but no one else plays that way. Give Groh a break. Imagine the pressure on the defensive backs when they are exposed to a good (actually great) QB after practicing against T Washington.

Miami – L at home to UVA
Clemson – W at home over Wake on a FG as time expired
VT – W at home by 3 over a TO-prone UNC squad
Duke – Blasted at home by UNC
Bad LA mojo coming to the Dome next Saturday, bad mojo. UGA’s in big trouble.
And my guess is they’ll get the Big 10 loser (Mich St or Wisconsin) in their bowl game. And the Dawgs will lose that one too. If you don’t believe me, just take a look at what I said previously about the W-L records of UGA’s opponents in the 10-game winning streak.

I’ve said this before and got blasted by some Tech guys. It is easy for Johnson to recruit offensive guys because he is not going after the same type of player. On the defensive side of the ball he is competing for the same guys as everyone else. Everyone is running a 3-4 or a 4-3. It is hard to find those guys who fit the their academic profile and confince them not to go to some of the state universities near by. I agree with JB’s post from earlier this evening. Tech should go after O’Leary and Frigeon (spelling).

RNB, UGA cannot play with anybody in the country. 14-42. That’s the SEC records of the teams UGA’s has beaten this year, that’s why they can’t play, this season, with anybody in the country. Winning creates optimism. GT started 6-0, finished 8-4. I’m not as optimistic as I was leading into the UVA game.
LSU, Bama, and Ark are just in a different league than UGA this year. Yeah, that could change next year. After all, they are 18-22 year olds.
How do I feel about GT football? PJ’s offense is such a thing that there will be occassional highs (’09) & lows (’10); however, 8-9 wins under PJ is what I’ll expect.

Jeff, nice job on this story.
All of the haters out there are hilarious. Strength of schedule or opponents records don’t mean squat. What matters is that the UGA has won 10 in a row with 7 SEC wins and are playing pretty good football. As a fan, it’s also rewarding to have wins over UF, UT and GT in one season.
Those of you say that this team is not a good team have neither watched them play or obviously don’t know anything about football. I realistically like the chances of this team against pretty much any team that I’ve seen play this year and I’ve watched alot of the top teams in the country.
I’m proud of these guys, especially the seniors, they deserve this year. I’m also proud of the coaching staff as they’ve found a way to put together a decent game plan, week after week despite the distractions. I hope that they can put together a doozy this week.
I do believe that this team can play with the Tigers next weekend. I watched them dismantle ARK yesterday and they are playing the best football right now in the country, no doubt they are the best and would beat any other team that I’ve seen play in the NC but if UGA can put together 60 mins. of complete football, clicking on all cylinders, I believe that they are capable of playing with LSU.On any given Saturday, anything is possible.

I’ll answer the question about Tech’s future and how I feel about it:
Good. Very good. But then again, hope springs eternal. Our skill people, save for the QB, are better than anyone wants to give them credit for, but to improve, we simply have to get better along both fronts. Easier said than done, yes, but again, I can hope. Plus, if it were my decision, Washington would have taken his last snap. The kid, bless his heart, he tries hard and does the best he can with what talent he has, but it’s simply not enough.
I’m no fan of Groh or that 3-4; we don’t have the horses to run it properly. The thing that vexed me all afternoon is that we played as if we had never seen UGA. We respected their running game WAY too much. I mean this as no disrespect to the Bulldogs’ backs, but going in, Georgia’s beating us the run was either possible or maybe even probable but Murray killing us in the air was a certainty if we chose to sit back and let him pick us apart. Bobo recognized this and ate us up. Give him and his team all the credit and give us bad marks.
Oh well, it’s over and done with. Time to think about the Sun Bowl and hopefully make it a springboard to better days.

Like I said, LSU could very well make this UGA team look silly and that would certainly be depressing, especially after 10 straight wins but it certainly would be gratifying, at least personally, to have won the SEC East and had the opportunity to make it to the SEC CG and lose against the probable BCS champion, especially in light of the last few seasons.

I know this isn’t what my fellow Jacket fans want to hear but it ain’t like we went out there today and lost to a slouch—in today’s CFB world, any team that can win 9 straight going in (now 10, sadly) has a thing or two going for it.
Georgia didn’t play particularly well today (aside from Murray, that is) and we darn sure didn’t so we learned that them not at their best is better than us not at our best. Them at their best more than probably would’ve been better than our best. That’s just how it is, however much it pains me to say it. There’s a disparity of talent that we just aren’t able to overcome.
The are no excuses for why we lost but there are reasons. We need to identify them and work on correcting them.

The other point that needs to be made is despite all the angst over CMR, I contend that he and his staff do an excellent job over the course of the season. His teams always seem better at the end of the year than at the beginning. His team could have come
out flat today with the SECCG next week and a makeshift backfield, but that was not the case. Instead it was the Jackets who came out flat. I wish Skoien had been successful in matching us up at the beginning of the season to test my theory.

I’m sure not the defense is “deflating” to the entire team. . i’m sure throwing 2 INT’s inside your own half is pretty deflating too. . . at least Groh’s defense was able to keep UGA from scoring on the first INT, which was a really, really poor throw. UGA scores there and the game is over in the first half.
Johnson hired Groh. . . in fact, Johnson was the guy who walked Groh around tech’s facilities while his other D coordinator was still on the job. . . buck stops with Johnson, the head man, not Groh. . . but i’m betting it won’t be spun that way.

One other thing for the Dawg fans, I hope you give CMR his due at developing QBs. From what I have seen looks like Murray has developed greatly from early in the season-the Auburn game and today’s game did not look like the same quarterback as the Boise game. Arkansas is not in the same league as Alabama or LSU. They struggled with Ole Miss and should have lost to Vanderbilt (Not to mention Alabama and LSU beat them easily and they were the so called #3 team in the country). I think the dawgs would stand a chance against Arkansas but Alabama or LSU is a whole different story. UGA does have a good measuring stick coming up in LSU so we can say how they stack up against an elite opponent. I am expecting a loss but if the dawgs come out and compete I’ll be happy if UGA gets beat by 21-50 like everyone (haters) are predicting then UGA will just be regarded as an above average like they have all year.

Your ramblings only reveal your inner pain and how much you would have loved to win today. It would bother me know Tech was beaten by a “not very good”UGA team playing with fourth string running backs.Lucky for Tech that Georgia plays LSU next week or this game would have been over at halftime.I’m sure that if Georgia gets boat raced by LSU you will take a vicarious pleasure in watching but remember, you still loss today and I dont see you winning this game anytime in the near future.Enjoy sunny El Paso.

I would love for Tech to reach out and bring Oklahoma State co-defensive coordinator Glenn Spencer back home. He’s a former Jacket defender, one heck of a recruiter and just a rock solid human being. He knows this area all too well and might want to get closer to home after the tragic loss of his wife following a heart transplant. He helped build West Georgia into a Division II power in the late 90s partly due to the team’s defensive play.

Everyone on here is blaiming CPJ and CAG for not getting the team fired up to play your annual state rival. This was such an important “rival game” that Tech couldn’t sell out a stadium that only holds less than 55,000 seats. It appears that the students and alum are to blaim for not supporting the team and helping to fire them up. In the future send more tickets to Athens and we will guarantee you a sell out for a rival game! Please sign PJ and AG to lifetime contracts.

gt4ever, I totally agree. I don’t see it the way Shultz does at all. A few completed passes change the whole game. The defense has been put in bad situations all year. For this offense to only score 17 points is shameful. I’ve been waiting for a pass after the pitch, I just thought it would be Sims throwing the ball. Lee should make a difference. ” GO JACKETS “

It comes down to money and Georgia has it and GT doesn’t. Grantham is paid $750,000 a year to get the job done, he is a solid coach. Georgia Tech does not have the money to go out and replace Groh with a coach any better than Groh.
This talk about GT being young is silly. Logic is silly, young does not mean good, just hopeful. Georgia by the way is also very young, but the dream teamers show up in a big way for Georgia, with GT it has been the last of the Gailey Seniors that have showed up big.

Have any of you seen my boy? The Jackets were outplayed and outcoached today folks. It starts with Paul Johnson. He is stubborn and thinks he can win with his one dimensional offense. The fact is that any time he plays a team with speed on defense he loses. You can blame Al Groh all you want but the main problem is the tech fan base. The stadium had more Dawgs fans than Tech fans. Until you get a fan base that supports its team you will never be consistant. GTBob, you are the perfect example. You say I know we were gonna lose but next week UGA is gonna get killed by LSU. Some GT fans continue to let the facts get in the way when making an ill advised point. GT has been lagging in the ACC with athletes that are not satisfactorily progressing in their chosen curriculum. However, why stand behind facts when you can repeat the same mantra even when there is no evidence to support it? There is no difference in the scholarly pursuits and achievement of the typical GT football player compared to UGA and most NCAA schools. Keep beating that same drum but the noise doesn’t drown out reality.

Ol’ Wrecks here to call in some markers that I put out when Coach Al Groh(ss) was hired:
I told the hard-headed segment of the GT fanbase way back then that Grantham was better than CAG and that CAG was nothing as a “3-4 guru” ever since he LEFT the NY Giants and no longer had GM George Young acquiring TALENT for him, of course I was laughed at by the know-it-alls on PPutzoff. com at the time, those same CPJ-boot-licking-toadies are now in melt-down mode over on GTSportstalk. com, and now I can say that I knew it all along.
I told you so you smug, d-bags, enjoy your mediocrity from your crappy HC/OC/DC
I also told the same crowd when CPJ was first hired that he would have trouble winning vs. tough competition since he organized his staff such that Brian Bohannon was in charge of QBs AND B-Backs, I told those d-bags way back then that it would hurt the QB position because Bohannon would not be able to teach proper throwing MECHANICS/QB Techiniques that would allow GT to play well vs. tough competition.
Four years into Coach Kung Fu Panda’s tenure a lot of WRECKSNEFFECT’s “I-told you-so” predictions are coming to fruition, i wonder where all my detractors are now?

Middle Tennessee 3-9
Kansas 2-10
Maryland 2-10
Duke 3-9
North Carolina 7-5

Last yr. Coach kung Fu Panda was 6-7 vs. the 70th or so toughest schedule in the Country and now he ’s only 8-4 vs. a similar schedule this season and the teams he beat were clearly CUPCAKE-CITY.

If GT is going to play D1 ball then we need to be excellent at it like our academics. We need to play by the same rules as everyone consistently in the top twenty. Broaden our curriculum, maybe merge with Georgia State, and save our State Millions since there are two major Universities 1 mile apart. The problem ultimately boils down to Johnson. The high school offense he runs will catch some teams off guard, but primarily against good teams it doesn’t work, there is a reason no one runs it anymore. Johnson also recruits the offense, from what I’ve been told the defense just gets the leftovers. Also, most of the teams GT plays run a totally different offense then them, with some resemblance of a passing game. When the offensive players that are being recruited are recruited for an option offense, they can’t give a good scout team look to the defense. Not to mention offensively big recruits don’t want to go to GT because it will hurt their chances in the draft. Paul Johnson’s teams have never been good at defense, that was one thing everyone was told when he came, I find it hard to believe that the blame rests on all the DC instead of the head coach.

At UGA they call it Communications, at Tech they call it Management. Heck, you’re not even tops in the ACC. I disagree with you Jeff, it starts with Johnson’s offense and the fact that it can not play from behind. Every defense in the nation, except for this years LSU & Alabama’s versions, will fall behind. You have to have an offense to bring that team back and give the defense a chance to win the game. I will concede that GT has neither but, that means the head coach needs to go as well. As a UGA fan, I hope Paul is around for another 5 years at least. That secures at least 4 wins for us over that time span. Johnson is pathetic and I think the true GT fans are starting to get it. I hope not.

This rivalry should be brought to an end. As I have mentioned before, UGA is closing the season with a no win game. Not insulting Tech, they need to focus more on other things themselves. The teams are on unequal playing fields and it has nothing to do with the option or academics. Some Gator fans should be found this morning after hanging themselves last night. Just some kind of an Offense and that was a different game.

Did anyone notice the pounding the ACC elite took last night at the hands of the SEC East? Vandy, UGa and SC won by a total of almost 10 touchdowns (without their marquee players). UF lost to FSU with most of their key players injured. FSU had approximately 85 yards total offense and around 6 first downs. I guess either the ACC sucks or the SEC East is light years better than 5051, Tech Fan, and others have promoted all week.

5051 has the same football smarts as gtbob. Both do not have the smarts to find their a$$ with a flashlight and a map. They are fun to read their posts. It reminds us how great it is to support UGA and not have to explain the engineering success of gt’s football program. Or lack there of.

@GTBob and other Techies
Please get over yourselves and your proud academic institution. You guys are not even tops as a state ran engineering school. You can throw in a few other state universities ahead of you. I am not try to rub salt on the wounds. Just asking for some of you guys to come to grips as to what kind of a school you really are, then realize your athletes are largely not even measuring up to that in the classroom. Both of our schools do their own thing respectively.

I’d like to welcome all of the new Tech posters to the AJC blog. As new to this blog, you might be looking for some help. The trick is to remain flexible. Don’t concern yourself with the fact that you keep changing your argument. No one will notice. Start your comments out with one argument and when that is proved wrong, quickly change your argument to hide the fact that you were wrong. To help you out, I have compiled this list of helpful hints on how to post.
1. Begin your posting career by stating that UGA will lose to whoever they are playing that week. It doesn’t matter who it is, just state that UGA will lose. After all, UGA is the absolute worst team in the world. They can’t beat anyone.
2. When Georgia wins against that team, talk about how bad that team was anyways. It’s always good to throw in a few “most delusional fan base” comments as well. The important thing here is not to worry that your argument was that UGA was going to get beat. Simply change the argument from UGA losing to the fact that they didn’t really beat anyone at all. Quoting stats of those teams win/loss record is always a plus. Make sure to point out that that team was in a lower conference and when UGA plays a team in their conference their real lack of talent will show.
3. When UGA beats a team from the SEC East, point out that the SEC East is awful! Pepper your post with comments such as “The East can’t ever beat anyone!” Don’t let the fact that the SEC East has teams like Florida and Tennessee in it and that they are normally in the Top ten. Don’t let facts cloud your mind. This year the SEC east is down. Rub that in really well…
4. When UGA beats a team from the SEC West, make sure to point out that they are awful this year as well. Do not concentrate on the fact that that team won the National Championship last year and you spent all week talking about how UGA would lose. That is beside the point! Stay flexible!
5. Now comes the time of year when you can start talking about how your team and your genius coach will run all over the Dawgs. Don’t concern yourself with the fact that you lost last year. Point to the fact that even though you did lose, your team ran for well over 500 yards. So in reality, it was a moral victory for Tech. Again, ignore the score! I know, that’s how the winner of all football games is decided. Just stick to your guns and talk about how no one can defend the triple option.
6. Once you lose to UGA for the 9th time in 10 years, it is time to get creative about posting. First, talk about how UGA is always supposed to beat Tech. Mention that Tech is not a football school. You might wonder, “Why would I be posting on a football/sports blog if Tech is not a football school?” Again, ignore that! Don’t let it cloud your mind! At this point, completely abandon football – just forget it. Now is the time to pull in the big guns! A favorite place to start is how your academic standards are so much higher than UGA’s. Comparing majors is a favorite place to go here, but be careful! Don’t spend too much time here or someone might bring up the graduation rates for your athletes. Next, talk about how many UGA fans work for Tech fans. In addition, make comments about how UGA grads only work at McDonalds or mow grass. Oh! Mention how all UGA fans are red necks and inbred. Talk about their coaches! How could I forget the coaches?!? Talk about how Todd Grantham is a fat slob who is totally classless. I know! Paul Johnson said to punch UGA fans in the face and that some UGA fans are “retarded”. Again, ignore that! Now talk about Mark Richt and his fake tan. Talk about how he is “fake” and make fun of his faith. Oh! Bring up the fact that UGA won the Fulmer cup last year. Let’s see… what else? Oh yeah! Talk about UGA’s mascots and how they keep dying. Post as the temporary mascot and poke fun at the team.
7. Now its time for your finale. Make sure that you remind the UGA fans about Jan Kemp.
New Tech posters, I hope this helps! To really see these techniques used by pros, please check out the recent posts by GT Bob and especially 5150 UOAD. These guys have perfected these posting points and raised it to an art form.
Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance. Happy posting!

LSU will beat the living sheet out of UGA.
GT has a decision to make and that is keep PJ and finish 7-5 each year or go another route.
The GT defense is never going to stop the better teams due to size and talent. Coaching is not the issue on defense.
GT has to recruit a QB that can at least throw a spiral some of the time.
GT should go hire Mike Leach today!!!!!

Where to start. CPJ. A charlaton. Triple option. Like they say on SNL: “Really?” Works great
if you’ve got Broncho Negurski or Jim Thorpe. Arrogant jerk. Dullard. (That’s a good one.) Tool, anybody? Haven’t heard that one yet, but he’d certainly look at home in my helter skelter toolbox.
I’m not a Yech hater, not at all. CPJ disgusts me on a level that’s hard to explain. You guys ain’t winning squat with this crustyself-important curmudgen jerkoff running a running a offense less complicated than what we ran in Gray Y in the late 60s. What stud is going to come there if you can’t throw a football. Oh, yeah, the same studs that go to GA Southern. So you’ve got a choice, my pocket protecting buddies. Are we a football school orare we a school with a football team. Right now I’d lead toward neither, but don’t worry, you can recruit the leftover standout LeGrange High School gems forever discussed around the Dairy Dip on Main Street for winning that one over hated arch rival Talifar County that were not recruited by the SEC, you know, the QBs that ran for 10,000 yards their senior years and passed for 125, the ones that knew how to run that LeGrange option attack like nobody’s business, the six foot 185 QBs with the quickest option toss in AA football in the State of Georgia. Anybody rmember Joe Bob? or whoever that dude was that left the hallowed halls for greener pastures in Statesboro? Yes, this is truly a joy to make fun of that idiot of a coach, the guy that won at Navy, Statesboro, DeKalb Tech on Memorial Drive and the semenary school over in Decatur. God, but I’d follow that guy into the trenches. I’m sure he’d use a slingshot against the machineguns cause it worked before machinguns were invented. Well, I’m about done for now. Can’t wait for next year, CPJ and what mysteries heretofore unbeknownst to the “millions and billion’s” of true triple option fans that you will unveil betwixt the hedges. You’re a genius and when I commit to you I promise with no fingers crossed not to talk to any othere colleges. LMFAO!!!!! P.S. Terrence Moore sucks.

Alternative is to conduct a special fundraising campaign for funding required to hire spurrier. Someone with the hatred of uga and vice versa that we need for this game. Additionally, would return the program to prominence and contend for championships regularly. Yes, very expensive, and yes, very possible. Pay him $5m, 10m, who cares. James,
You hit the nail on the head. Al Groh is NOT a good Defensive Coordinator. I won’t disrespect him, but he is WAY too old and lacks intensity to give Tech a formidable defense.
Also, Paul Johnson seems too stubborn to diversify his offense enough to take Tech to the top-10.
As a UGA fan I have respected CPJ, but now find myself not liking him as much because he is a little too sarcastic and hard headed. You can’t expect your QB to throw darts if you you don’t throw the ball all season long. While I still believe CPJ is a great X’s and O’s coach, I think his limitations are shining through.

I predicted Tech would play in the Cold Turkey Bowl yesterday after the VT game, and they did. The “Dregs Bowl” was what Tech earned by getting bowled over by the big VT qb. Tech has another 6′5″, 250 lb recruit named Francis Kallon that shoud be forced to try out for qb. Also, how Tech is organized is with it’s president and Ratikovich deciding if CPJ should get fired. We already know that Ratikovoich is biased toward LSU. Look at how they are ranked this year, and at how Tech lost to them in ‘08 in the Chick Bowl. Look at how Ratikovich did not hire a Tech jersey retiree for head basketball coach. Peterson does not provide any checks and balances to such bias like he should. And the AA keeps letting CPJ get away with unwatchable offense and defense. Tech might want to hire a football staff of many or all former Tech players who were good for Tech, not just one coach who used to be a player, such as Maxie Baughn, or Curry, or Roof. They gotta get organized. Staff there is not devoted to Tech b/c they did not go to Tech. I’m not giving any money to the Tech Roll Call this year. They need to improve too much. I can’t stand the direction the football unis from ‘08 went, from old gold, to black, to pink, to change jersey colors during the season. There’s not enough consistency at Tech for me to want to fund the alum roll call. My dad didn’t fund it either this year. We don’t fund a team that wears powder puff football pink for any reason, even breast cancer awareness pink, no sir, we will not. Neither my dad or I wear pink, but my mom does.

Credit to the Dawgs; they dominated the game. Even in the first few minutes you could tell Tech did not have the ability to put any pressure on Murray. It was like watching him plat toss and catch with his friends in the back yard. UGA’s O-line was simply too big for Tech. Once that became apparent (very early) then it was only a matter of who could score more points…and that points to Tech’s other shortcoming: Washington is simply not a good QB and never has been. Yesterday, as poised and accurate Aaron was, Tevin was equally incompetent. He can’t pass for s**t and when he fakes the toss he comes to a dead stop before running. Put simply, UGA looked good and Tech did not. Tech needs bigger and faster boys on defense. And, pray for rain, Vad Lee displays the promise at QB we all hope for.

I had watched PJ for years and thought him a good coach. I also thought he’d be good for the GT program and might even turn your misfortunes of the rivalry around. Looking at it 4 years later, he’s a bust and doesn’t seem to have the ability or desire to change it. The thing with the TO offense is, opposition adapts. One time, it’s tough, second time it’s difficult, third time it’s a different story. It appears to me IMHO Johnson has been there too long. He is ultimately responsible for the entire team play, not just offense. The call for Groh is mislead. Groh isn’t you guy’s problem

I think if Paul Johnson went and hired a quality D-Coordinator, Tech could win the ACC and more every year. Also, you can’t completely blame Tech’s inability to pass on Tevin Washington. Paul Johnson has got to incorporate the passing game more consistently throughout the entire season. You can’t expect a QB to throw darts all of the sudden when you haven’t been passing all season.
Of course the QB, Washington, is rusty as an accurate passer. Al Groh is a BAD D-coordinator, period.

You run the TO when your school has seriously inforced academic requirements to where you are forced to make the utmost out of the limited amount of “talent” that you are allowed to have. Everyone knows Tech recruits roughly 90% of the same kids coming out of high school as UGA does and would gladly roll the red carpet out for any of them to choose us over the Dawgs. So getting talent through the doors at Tech is not the problem, it’s the lack of appeal to lure them there. I knew Johnson’s offense would be a recruit killer as it has been for the past 4 years. He is too childish and stubborn to admit his offense will not will consistently work at this level. We are not even in the SEC for crying out loud and still cannot compete on a regular basis in the lowly ACC.
Time for change, immediately.

Jeff, CPJ may have lucked out with some of the key players he inherited from Gailey. Let’s face it, Josh Nesbit was not a pro style, drop back, passing quarterback and yet that was going to be the scheme he was it it Gailey had stayed. He was perfect for CPJ’s option. Same can be said for the stable of running backs that were left over from the prior regime. Now, four years into the triple option attack when Tech is playing with CPJ’s recruits we are no better off than we were.
On defense Al Groh has installed a pro defense knowing he did not at the time have the personnel needed to make it work. Recruit to your system, he says. OK, fine but where are these players. Murray was seldom if ever pressured. If Duke could run up over 30 points using short crossing patterns one had to shutter at what Georgia would be able to do. And yes, Georgia was able to do about anything it wanted.
In the end, the separation of the two in state programs is about as great as it ever has been. About the same can be said for the entire ACC conference versus the SEC. We are consistently out coached, out played and it just sucks. IT JUST SUCKS!

Paul Johnson’s offense is Horrible????
“Georgia Tech’s spread-option offense ranks 17th nationally in scoring offense (38 ppg) and second in rushing (328 ypg) while compiling 475 yards of offense per game.”
Tech has one of the top rated offenses in the country. Sure CPJ needs to tweak it a bit with a passing component. I am a Die-Hard Dawg fan, but I am also intelligent enough to admit facts.
Tech’s main problem lies with their defense and special teams. Al Groh is not a good D-Coordinator; great resume but not fit to build and run a top defense.

Also, new Tech posters, you can see from 5150’s latest posts, you can effectively combine different tips to get an even better effect. This will be UGA’s 4th trip to the SEC Championship game during Richt’s tenure. UGA has won two SEC Championships and won the East FOUR times ‘02, ‘03, ‘05 and ‘11. This program is not new to success. There isn’t a single program in the country that hasn’t had a down year during the long tenure of a coach. Penn St., Michigan, Texas, Florida St., Notre Dame, Miami and now Ohio St. have all gone through tough patches. We have one bad year and trolls like you come out of the woodwork. Okay Posers Lets Talk Strength of Schedule:
Preseason AP Top 25
1. Oklahoma
2. Alabama
3. Oregon
4. LSU
5. Boise St. – L
6. Florida St.
7. Stanford
8. Texas A&M
9. Oklahoma State
10. Nebraska
11. Wisconsin
12. South Carolina – L
13. Virginia Tech
14. TCU
15. Arkansas
16. Notre Dame
17. Michigan State
18. Ohio St.
19. Georgia
20. Mississippi St. – W
21. Missouri
22. Florida – W
23. Auburn – W
24. West Virginia
25. USC
UGA played 5 preseason Top 25 teams and beat 3 of them. Against South Carolina, UGA statistically dominated the game and turned the ball over 4 times and yet still only lost by 3 points. In week #7 Georgia Tech was ranked at #12 in the country and was 6-0. We easily kicked Tech’s hiney 31-17.
Perhaps this will shut some people up. Georgia didn’t make its schedule. Winning 10 straight games in the SEC is difficult regardless of circumstances. Beating Florida, Tenn., Auburn and Tech in a single season is sweeter than cotton candy – period!

First off, congrats to the Dawgs on the win.
You had the number 2 rushing offence against the number 2 rushing defense. I for one think that GT’s been hanging their hat on statistics since CPJ got here. So, let’s see if there’s any relevance to them:
Total Yards: UGA 380, GT 355
Passing: UGA 252, GT 112
Rushing: UGA 128, GT 243
Penalties: UGA 6-45, GT 5-36
3rd Down Conversions: UGA 4-10, GT 7-16
4th Down Conversions: UGA 0-0, GT 1-2
Turnovers: UGA 1, GT 2
Possession: UGA 29:21, GT 30:39
UGA had the advantage passing, GT had the advantage rushing. Aside from that, looks pretty even uh? Actually, it wasn’t even close. Bottom line; scoreboard says it all.
UGA wins yet again and it’s because of better athletes and…wait for it…better coaching. CPJ is a good coach, but not against this level of competition. It is what it is folks. I’m a GT fan through and through, but sometimes you have to face the facts. UGA is better and will continue to be so as long as CPJ is our coach.

Let me see if I can get my “GT Calculus” correct here. GT fans I know will correct me if I’m wrong.
Georgia beat Auburn 45-7, and Alabama beat Auburn 42-14, therefore Georgia is ten points better than Alabama. Sorry forgot my formula. Georgia>Alabama.
Now, Alabama lost to LSU 9-6 which means LSU is 3 points better than Alabama. Sorry, LSU>Alabama.
Therefore, extrapolating it out based on the numbers Georgia is 10 points better than Alabama and LSU is only 3 points better than Alabama, thus Georgia is 7 points better than LSU. And by the Laws of Physics Georgia should beat LSU 7-0. Thus Georgia>LSU.
Now Techies, tell me what’s wrong with that logic?

Nobody likes to get beat 10 out of 11 just ask UGA against Florida. GA is better at football period, no question there. Do they have a better coach? That’s debatable, Richt year after year has a top 5 recruiting class and doesn’t do much with it. This year is a perfect example. The Mutts haven’t beaten anybody worth a damn this year or last. The schedule after the first 2 games was a joke, but nobody knew how bad FL, Tenn, or Auburn would be in the same year, so you can’t blame him for that. It’s just with the talent level at the 4 year house party, GA should be mentioned with ALA, LSU, and the other perennial powers. They are not and haven’t been for a while. I don’t think Johnson likes to recruit and uses real and imagined reasons for a lack of success in that area. He downplays recruiting because for whatever reason he has little success at it. So the real question is , do you want to have moral victories because you come close, or occasionally win the big games with lesser talent, or do you want to have superior talent and usually come up short when it matters? It seems GA nor Tech can do what it takes to win big games when they count and it’s for different reasons. I know I’d rather have the talent and always have a shot, than be the underdog always looking for the upset.

Think of recruits as in financial terms (tough to do for you Techies but, I digress),” It’s not how much money you make as it is what you do with what you make”. Thats coaching. Yes UGA has and has had deficiencies in coaching although, continue to recruit well. GT has worse coaching deficiencies and the inabilty to recruit well. That stat about Richt recruiting Top 5 classes year after year is incorrect. We recruit well, but if you compare our classes to Florida, LSU and more recently Alabama, you’ll find that we are behind each one. It’s tough to be national champions in a conference where you’re being out recruited. As good as our classes are they’re not even the third best in the conference. If I’m not mistaken Richt has taken Georgia to more SEC Championship appearances than any coach in the league, so I’d say he’s doing a fine job with the talent we’re recruiting. Richt has also put more players in the NFL during his tenure at UGA than any coach in the SEC.

GA rarely plays LSU or Alabama so it really doesn’t matter unless you are playing them for the SEC championship. FL kicks your rear regularly because they have recruited better and have always out coached you. My point is your talent level is on par with that of the big boys, but your coaching isn’t. Seems I remember after the second game of the season these blogs were filled with get rid of Richt entries. He’s horrible, he’s got to go, etc…. My opinion is Richt can recruit with the best of them, the question is, can he coach with them? We’ll see Saturday. The record so far isn’t pretty, but that can change in a day.

Here is the difference in our program and why we dominate the series…our coach knows that if you lose 3 in a row to the in-state rival that we HATE, then you get shown the door…just ask Johnny Griffin and Jim Donnan….but at Tech, it is acceptable and understood that the annual butt whipping comes as surely as thanksgiving. Thats why your program will always get dominated by UGA…how’s the rings coming Coach PJ? Or the billboard? Is the perception just that or reality to you now? Hard for any team to win if they average 10 yards rushing in 3 quarters of play. Let’s give Coach Grantham, the Georgia defensive staff, and the Dawgs credit for shutting down Tech’s one dimensional offense.
The best comment came from Tech’s QB Washington. The look he had on his face when he came off his last series said it all.
But Tech, here is your issue re your defense. Nothing wrong with your DC. The problem lies with your HC. Frankly, I’m surprised any DC worth his salt would want to coach on a team with a one dimensional offense. And Jeff, that is your answer to the Tech riddle.
But let’s give Georgia’s defense for playing solid all year. And Tech, you have a good team, players, and university. Just win your damn bowl game and look good doing it. Go Dawgs.

Congratulations to the Georgia Bulldogs. You outplayed us on offense, defense and special teams and you outcoached us too. When Tech had the opportunity to make something happen, the players could not run, pass or catch the football, nor could Tech defenders get any pressure on the Georgia quarterback or cover their receivers effectively.
It was obvious very early that the Tech quarterback was not able to throw the ball effectively but I will defer to Johnson who sees all Tech QBs in practice every day for not putting in Days earlier.
Our guys will have to live with this for a year and the players and coaches will have to decide whether they want to get better or not. Tough losing to Georgia but it is easier to take when it is a sound defeat than when you lose a close one that should’ve been a Tech win.

Blame some of the commisioners out there for the rules of the BCS.
But that is not how the leaders of the sport have chosen to crown a champion. Instead, powerful people such as the Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany, whose league has been rendered nationally irrelevant by the BCS, continue to block a playoff at every turn. If you don’t like watching two SEC teams play for the national title, you can thank those people.
Until they see the light, we’re stuck with this system. Not that everyone minds, of course.

I have been following Tech for twenty five years. I still like them, but they have always had a problem on defense, particularly with the pass. They play a soft zone and the quarterbacks eat them up alive. The defense played with very little passion, considering who they were playing. We have to remember though, that the Dawgs are stacked with all of those 4 and 5 star recruits against Tech’s 2 and 3 star players. They’re supposed to have the better team. Oh well, maybe next year!

Buck you SOB you can die and go straight to HELL. I have 1 daughter that is a gradsuate from GA Tech and 1 that will in DEC. and both can hold their own with anything that is at georiee. In fact if what I saw walking the campus Saturday is an example of what is at georgiee then they as well as many others at Tech would be beauty queens. Also one is employeed with a large corporation and the 1 that graduates in Dec has 2 offers on the table right now. I’m betting that before their careers are over they will earn much more than you can dream of. You have a good football team but don’t forget there are no PE, Education or Housing Majors at Ga Tech. What ever a Housing major is.They educate and produce successful students not students as one of your school’s president said one time,”at least they can get a job at the post office. ATL XMAN It has nothing to do with who is coaching any of the teams in the ACC. It is the soft commissioner the ACC has. In the South Carolina Auburn game Shaw was hit helment to helment and fumbled the ball on the goal line, In last weeks Ga Kentucky game a Ga player hit a Kentucky player head to head and in neither case was a flag dropped. This year Tech had two hard hits on receivers in different games leading with the shoulder and in one instance the head was never touched. In both cases Tech was hit with penalties. One of the penalties was called “Targeting” what ever that is. So is it any wonder ACC schools are at a disadvantage when playing conferences that take football serious. When the ACC expanded this year it added 2 basketball schools that haven’t been anything but average at best in football in years. If your looking for the problem with ACC football it’s not the talent, as the ACC puts many players in the NFL, look at the commissioner’s office. John Swafford is the worst football commissioner in the history of football.

Jeff to yell To Hell with Ga in the Munson tribute or any other is not acceptable. However in 1986 Jim Luck a long time Tech coach was killed in an auto accident the night before the Tech GA game. On Munson’s Sunday call in show a Ga caller stated he was happy that coach Luck was killed and he wished that would happen to every Tech fan. Munson just giggled and said you don’t mean that. So if you are looking at great character just look at your on fan base and in that case your famed announcer.

Can you blame Tech’s players for not being passionate? They were playing at home but the stadium was 40% UGA fans, that made way more noise than Tech fans from start to finish…..The triple option can be affective and has in some games but once your down by 10 points or more in the 2nd half the game is over. No QB with a decent arm will ever want to run that offense so he can get laid out 10 times a game while pitching the ball. It’s a boring offense and will never encourage new fans to come to the games.

Bring it ladies. I love the chest thumping when a weak SEC East team beats their “rival”. Talk about a real football team. Yall have lost to the only two “real” football teams you played this year (if you consider a team that plays on a smurf field “real”). Get ready for a lesson at the Dome and another mediocre season for the folks from Athens.

Tech always has a few exceptional athletes, but not in the same numbers as many of the programs we face. Just check out the 3, 4 and 5-star commitments. Tech routinely get out-recruited by most of the ACC and all of the SEC. We always have a couple of pieces, but rarely the whole package. Good receiver? Poor QB. Good linebackers? Poor D-line. Good field goal kicker? Poor punters and kick-off personnel. Good running backs? Poor receivers. It is a numbers game and Tech cannot recruit the numbers necessary to compete at a high level. When Tech gets out-recruited by Vanderbilt, something is very wrong.
Recently, Tech engaged a firm to find out what would improve the “fan experience” and help fill the stadium. I could have saved them a LOT of money – recruit more and better athletes, which will translate into a better product on the filed. Sanford Stadium is filled with “wannabees,” many of whom probably never set foot in UGA classrooms, but who go to football games simply to be a part of a winning program. Maybe that means increasing the recruiting budget. Maybe that means teaching Coach Johnson how to appeal to 18-year old “superstars.”
For the last two years we have witnessed the late season collapse that comes from a depleted cupboard. You can’t hide the lack of enough talent when you hit the meat of your schedule.

Jeff, I have been telling everyone that when you play a 3-4 D scheme, that you only have 3 down line man and when those line man are the most under sized line men in college football by at least 45 lbs and 4 inches, you aren’t pass rushing ANYBODY!!!!! This “defense” sucks and we don’t have the players to play it. When John Tenuta was our DC, we may have not had the best offense, but by God we were in the top 10 in defense every year he was here. Why we let him go is still a mystery to me? Find John Tenuta and sign him for 10 years!!!!!!!!!!!! I have seen him coach at a Tech spring game……HE DON’T PLAY!!!!!!!!!!!

Coach Johnson is not the problem. The key is better athletes. Tech should focus on recruiting athletes that mix well at Tech from all over the country. Coach Johnson has focused on recruiting Georgia; however, great athletes in the north may find a southern school attractive. Tech is a tough school that requires a cerebral athlete.
One thing to consider about the defense that played well against Clemson is that our nose tackle (Anthony Barnes) had his best game. The nose Tackle is a key compnenet in the 3-4. CAG needs a good to great nose guard.

Tech runs a faux 3-4 defense, since it must move a couple of those linebackers up to the line to create a credible run defense or pass rush. That means we are really running a 5-2 defense, which is vulnerable to crossing patterns, evidenced by Georgia on Saturday. Tech needs to go shopping for a couple of 350 pound nose tackles every year at Junior Colleges like Georgia does. They could stick around for one football season before they flunk out, but maybe they could make the 3 in the 3-4 work. Just a thought…

Ya’ll have been exposed! Can’t get a good Q.B. (since he wants to SURVIVE) with the triple option. Best running backs ain’t coming either. Gimmick is over; once its discovered, superior athletes rule. Chop-blockin’ linemen ain’t coming, either. It was a good run the first year, and Tech is young. But it will take a SUPERIOR defense to cover the faults of the offense, the better athletes ain’t comin’ to a triple option offense, and UGA just beat ya’ll with NO running game at all! We may get DRILLED by LSU, but at least ya’ll ain’t gotta play ‘em or the “triple-options” would be: run, hide, survive!

I said it right here in this paper 4 weeks ago: We do not have, and never will have, the size up front to play a 3-4 defense. Period. End of story. If they’re calling for Randy Edsall’s head after one season at Maryland (ok, Feinstein made a convincing argument today in the Post), then we cannot afford to waste another season believing that we can actually recruit at a level where the 3-4 will work for us and allow us to get enough pressure up-front to strike fear into anybody, much less hold an opponent under 30 points on a regular basis. Paul Johnson is still the “right choice”; Al Groh is simply not the right fit…

My apologies for an attempt at humor. I am not suffering from intellectual slothfulness. I just had fun with a little broken English “bustin’ your chops! Its pretty obvious a nerve has been hit with you; you have no defense (no pun intended) to offer for the poor showing Saturday, so all you can do is try the red herring approach. Face it; the good players are not coming to a system where the Q-Back will be in a wheel chair by the time he is fifty. Also, it is impossible to recruit the top backs, even those who don’t get into trouble all the time (like ours!) The gimmick is up; triple option will win a few, lose you more. No ACC championships with it, and definitely only a VERY occasional win over UGA. This is big-boy football!

Sorry guys. I’m a Tech fan, but you need to face reality. Tech will never pass effectively and consistently. Not bashing the system or the players, but the QB and WRs will never get to develop chemistry and get on a roll. QBs will never be able to focus on reading pass defenses and hitting the receivers when they have to learn the option.

We played aggressive defense in one game all year – the Clemson game. Groh/CPJ decided in that game to not give the QB any time to throw the ball. The rest of the games, we gave the QB all day to throw the ball. We should have been rushing as many as it takes to hit Murray early and often. He probably burns us a few times, but you have got to get in a QBs head early. You let him get some confidence and it it all over.
Poor play calling and poor QB development were exposed. Hard to believe this is the best QB CPJ has developed in 4 years.

I can understand CPJ’s predicament with Al. No doubt in my mind that we are lucky to have him. He’s a defensive guru. Sitting here, I don’t know. I think we should extend him 2 more years. Give Vad or Synjin a chance and lets see what we’ve got. I’d hate to change horses now, but man the D is bad. Give the CAG recruited players a chance and let’s man up. Maybe CPJ needs other staff changes this year as well. I’d like to see more emotion from the coaches. Also, I fear CPJ might go too hard and mid season players get sick of football. Hope that’s not the case because I don’t.

Excellent take, Jeff.
I agree that the defense needs upgrading. I still think this GT team has overachieved this year. They self-destructed in the Hokies’ game, otherwise we might be talking about ACC championships (I’m an optimist). If the Jackets win their bowl game and get 9 wins, there is no doubt in my mind that it’s a successful season.
The loss to the Bulldogs hurts, but the better team won. I’m not a defensive expert and I don’t know how to improve it (aside from better recruiting), but if that ever gets figured out….LOOK OUT!

I disagree. There are plenty of great HS athletes who’d more than love to bang around in a TO as QB, especially considering that there aren’t many D1 schools for the athlete that fits that mold to go to. And we ought to be able to entice a ton of great RBs. Our problem is that Mr. Charisma can’t seem to get the recruiting thing going like your pretty boy can.
