Todd Grantham's Georgia defense ranks among leaders nationally in several categories, but struggled last year against Tech. (Jason Getz/AJC)
Two years ago, the head coaches at Georgia and Georgia Tech, both with offensive backgrounds, fired their respective defensive coordinators.
So ended the frequent lampooning of Willie Martinez in Athens and the most often heard question at Tech, “What idiot is coaching Paul Johnson’s defense?” (His name was Dave Wommack.)
As Georgia and Georgia Tech prepare to face each other again Saturday, it’s easy to see that the biggest difference between the programs is defense.
The Bulldogs rank fourth nationally in total defense, 11th in scoring, ninth in takeaways and second in third-down percentage.
The Jackets, in those respective categories, rank 43rd, 56th, 52nd and 89th.
Now, it would be an oversimplification to say Todd Grantham is succeeding in his job and Al Groh isn’t. Grantham has better players. But after seeing some progress on defense, Tech has allowed 68 points and 827 yards in the past two weeks against Virginia Tech and Duke, which doesn’t equate to a gold star on Groh’s late-season resume.
Saturday’s game could go a long way toward affirming direction for both coordinators and, it follows, both programs.
It’s easy to diminish the Bulldogs’ defensive accomplishments because of a soft schedule. That won’t be an issue against Tech. The Dogs may have won two of three against the Jackets since Johnson’s arrival, but they really haven’t stopped his option offense.
Al Groh's Tech defense has looked solid at times, but allowed 68 points to Virginia Tech and Duke in the past two weeks. (AP photo)
Consider last season. Georgia won 42-34, but the Jackets rushed for 411 yards and had 512 total. They nearly doubled the Bulldogs in first downs (32-18) and offensive plays (92-48). They held the ball for over 38 minutes. The difference in the game: Tech’s three fumbles (all leading to touchdowns) and a missed extra-point attempt (allowing Georgia to hold a 35-34 lead until Washaun Ealey’s touchdown with 1:29 left.)
When Mark Richt left the field in Athens, you could hear him exhale in Bogart.
It follows that when Richt was asked if he expected Grantham’s defense to fare better the second time around against Tech’s option, he responded, “I don’t know. I just wouldn’t predict it. If you saw that offense week after week after week after week and not just once a year, I suppose we could get pretty good at it. But to think all of a sudden that we’re going to hook it up and be good at defending it, I wouldn’t bet on that.
“Their offense is just extremely difficult to stop. It makes every possession so much more precious than normal. … The quarterback is a runner, so everybody on our defense has a very strict responsibility. If you make a mistake against this team, that’s when the really big plays happen. Against other teams, you can make a mistake and have a free safety there to clean up the mess.”
The Dogs have held seven of their past nine opponents to 16 or fewer points. But Tech’s offense has averaged nearly 37 points and has been held under 21 just once (24-7 loss at Miami).
Groh has two problems: 1) His defense has been dented in two games since an upset of Clemson; 2) Even if Georgia plays without (or with a hobbled) Isaiah Crowell, quarterback Aaron Murray is playing his best football of the season and effectively spreading the ball around.
Groh signed a two-year contract. He hasn’t yet spoken publicly about whether he plans to come back next season.
Grantham signed a three-year contract. His agent already is pushing for an extension, earlier than athletic director Greg McGarity would like, and is making noises about other opportunities.
So in a sense, the futures of both are uncertain. Maybe one is looking for a sign and the other is looking for leverage. This game could provide either.

Schultz failed to mentioned that Georgia’s touchdown
after Tech’s failed extra point was purposely
allowed by tech so that Tech could get the ball
back and at least have some chance to win, highly
improbable as a quick touchdown and two point
conversion would have been (to get to overtime).
AJC writers always just happen to leave something
out, don’t they?

“Now, it would be an oversimplification to say Todd Grantham is succeeding in his job and Al Groh isn’t.”
Its only an oversimplification because you continue to insist on making excuses for Georgia Tech football. A defensive coordinators job is to prevent the other team from moving the ball and scoring. Todd Grantham has done a better job of that than Al Groh. END OF STORY. This isn’t pee wee league where you simply get points for trying. Everyone else in the nation is measured by the bottom line and that is wins and losses. Georgia Tech should not get special treatment. I’m tired of all the Techie excuses and the AJC enabling this loser mentality.
See you tomorrow nerds. Bring your calculus books. Its going to be a long day.

Every now and then the outcome of one of these games is determined pretty early. More often than not, it is a nail-biter that goes down to the wire. Life for three hours would be much easier with the former if it is decided early on in our favor but I’m expecting the latter.

I am curious about something. We all know Tech fans entire season every year comes down to the UGA game (kinda pathetic). Why is it, when the game is in Atlanta, that Tech fans sell so many of their tickets or don’t want to go? Every year, the high school stadium is literally 40 – 50% Georgia fans. Kinda sad if the game means so much to you.

I just looked it up. In the 3 years since Johnson has been at Tech his offense has gained 1355 yards on Georgia. That would be really really really impressive if not for the fact that UGA has gained 1253 yards on Tech during that same period. So they’ve outgained us by 100 yards in 3 years. WHOOPDEEDOO!!! Yet all we hear is how we’ver never been able to stop Johnson’s offense. You never hear how they aren’t really stopping us either.
But we have “better players” so I guess it doesn’t count. What a joke.

Kinesiology is what they take for graduate classes. It is about the body and they should know the basics for their weight training and S&C to play ball. It lets them stay in school to play. That is smart of UGA to let them stay. TECH didn’t do the same letting players in a grad Program. We lost some linemen that went to play at Ga State for Bill Curry and continue their education.
Steve tech doesn’t sell all of it’s season tickets. UGA fans buy picket packages just to get tickets for the UGA v GT game. you must not be a REAL UGa fan if you don’t know that.

I understand you think that you are better than everyone else because you can copy and paste Seniors and their degrees from a college. I want Geogia Tech to win the game but taking pot shots at students because of their majors is sad. Take pot shots at coaches and refs if you want but i am thankful that these kids are getting an education. That is the only way the USA will get back on track is to have educated citizens. There are a LOT of M-Train majors on our football team or undecided for a long time. Schools is hard, especially when you are playing a sport. So ease off and set a good example for people instead of showing your immaturity.

Steve, sight lines at BDS are a lot better than those in Sanford & Son Stadium. It may be a beautiful stadium, but you’re so far away from the field or so close to the hedges, you don’t really get much of a view of the action. As far as women, I guess you haven’t looked at the UGA cheerleaders this year. Some of the prettiest ones are the boys….LOL

I didn’t say a NICER view; I said a BETTER view. Why spend a fortune on tickets for a game if you are a mile away from the field? I’ve been to Athens several times. I don’t argue that it’s a pretty stadium, but the sight lines are terrible. Also the concourses are way too narrow for the number of people there. It’s like a subway station in NYC at rush hour.

UGA looks like they could play with LSU. If LSU goes with this same style of game. I think if LSU were to play like they did against BAMA is would be hard for UGA to be in the game. LSU just run the ball right at UGA and wear the dawgs out and eat the clock. LSU gets the lead and then it is on Murray. Murray isn’t going to come back and beat the LSU D with passes. if UGA and LSU play a SPEED game it could be like this game. UGA could win that type of game.

to be honest….you really don’t know how good Georgia’s defense is. They have not played anhone in the last 9 games that had a decent offense. You will be playing one on Saturday…..but it is not a standard one, and you still might not know after that game either…but you will find out for sure in Atlanta. But one thing I know…..LSU’s defense is the best college defense (with Bama right next to them)….I have seen in a long time. You can’t run or pass on them. The only way to beat LSU is to sti still and let them beat themselves….and I don’t think that will happen. And the “funny” thing is…..I really think Bama may be better than LSU.

Tyrann Mathieu was a three star recruit that people had to convince LSU to sign….as only Tulane has interest in him. Tells you a little about all the recruiting sites and the validity of star assignments for high school players. Ronald Powell at Florida was the #1 player in the country and a 5-star and Mathieu a 3-star that no one wanted…….Powell is nearly worthless to the Gators…..and Mathieu is the Heisman winner on defense.

IF GT runs up 4,500 yds on UGA BUT UGA somehow wins the game, then for sure UGA is in either the COTTON BOWL with $$ MILLIONS IN WINNINGS or the OUTBACK WITH $ MILLIONS IN WINNINGS AND …AND THE GA.DOME WITH $ MILLIONS AND $MILLIONS AND $MILLIONS in TV money for both schools. THEY GET THE SUGAR BOWL if GT churns up millions of yards on UGA BUT UGA SOMEHOW IN THE DOME defeats LSU. Then, once gain, UGA GETS $$$GAZILLIONS for being in the Sugar Bowl for the 4th time in 11 years.
GT and their 4,500 yds churned up on UGA but somehow they lose? Oh, that would be the John Belk Department Store Bowl, where the winnner gets FREE CHEESE GRITS at the I-85 Waffle House on Airport Rd.

The only thing worthy about Georgia Tech is the Varsity. Even the Varsity moved to Athens after just three years in the North Avenue ghetto.
Georgia will lay a smackdown on Georgia Tech just like they always do. It’s tradition, you see.
The techies make fun of UGA, but engineers are really just technicians who work for the managers. Most of the managers and executives are UGA grads.
This year, the average SAT score for the UGA freshman class was actually higher than Tech’s!
Tech grads will always be jealous of the UGA. and they should be… We took their women. Which women choose the nerds over the guys in Athens Town?

Snoop, Tech’s fight song is one of the most famous and most recognized fight songs in the country, along with those for Notre Dame and Michigan. Our mascot, Buzz, currently is leading in the Capital One annual contest of college mascots—-Hairy Dawg got eliminated; he had less votes than anybody else in the contest. Our other “mascot, the Ramblin ‘Reck, is one of the top symbols of any college in the world. And we quit the SEC because of Dodd’s misguided dreams of being the Notre Dame of the south and because of lax recruiting rules in the SEC which he would not use at Tech.

I would say something smacky to Tech fans about tomorrow, but at this point I’m really starting to wonder if they even care any more. They’ve started all their usual BS about academics and entrance requirements BEFORE the game has even started this year. In the past they have at least waited until after the game to unleash all their crybaby excuses. Its as if they’ve just given up. More and more lately we’re hearing all this loser BS about how they’ll never beat Georgia consistantly because of the calculus and SAT scores. What kind of loser fan base says something like that about their team? Tech fans. That’s who. What happened to all that hype about how Paul Johnson was the “New Sheriff In Town” that was going to bring it to UGA? It just turned out to be more empty Techie tough talk. Now we’re back to all our crybaby excuses aren’t we Tech fans? You people are sad.
Anyway, good luck tomorrow Techies. I wish you all the luck in the world. I hope all the bounces go your way. I hope the refs give you every call. I hope every play call review goes your way. I hope all these things so that maybe, just maybe, you crybaby sore losers will finally acknowledge a UGA victory with class and maturity. I’m not holding my breath though.
Thanks.

Most GT students would like to sit in the dorm and tickle their gonads with their slide rules rather than sit in Grant Field.
BTW, why would anyone in Atlanta want to name their stadium after someone whose best friend burned the city down?
UGA girls have never liked Georgia Techies, unless they had really wealthy parents.
GT has no character, no spirit like the UGA has.
And as for football, the last time GT had an exciting team was when Kim King and Lenny Snow were a pair…

OJF, they didn’t HAVE to end it, but somebody at either or both schools somehow decided that was the best thing to do. I agree that in time they will probably renew it, but it won’t be for a few years. I have always been an A&M fan against Texas, but I had a hard time pulling for them last night since they are soon to be an SEC team. But I can’t stand Texas and especially Mac Brown, so I couldn’t really pull for them either. I have to say that I ended up pulling for the Aggies, and the end of the game sucked.

About those rivalries, I believe the ACC is going to 9 conference games when the new teams join. I know the SEC is going to play 8 next season, but I think that is due to allow some previously scheduled games stay on the schedule next season. I assumed from reading between the lines that the SEC will eventually go to 9 as well.

Snoop, Tech hasn’t recruited cheerleaders since the 50s. That was 60 years ago. Get with it.
Have you checked out the UGA cheerleaders this year. The guys are “prettier” than most of the girls. Read what I said earlier about a UGA cheerleader (actually quite pretty) dating Tech’s kicker, and her roommate dating another Tech player. UGA girls date MEN, not boys from the farm.
Slide Rules haven’t been used since the 70s. Boy, you really are an dumb old fart, aren’t you?
Grant Field was not named after U.S Grant. It was named after a local Atlanta benefactor way back whenever. Don’t you know anything at all???
I have been to Sanford&Son Stadium. There is no excitement there; everybody is too drunk even to have a clue what’s going on.
UGA hasn’t “demolished” Tech since Gailey’s first year. Every game since then has been relatively close, some VERY close.

One thing that CPJ said on his show the other night that got forgotten in all the furor over his non-PC statement was that he thought we are headed towards 4 16-member super-conferences. That should solve a lot of problems and create some fantastic schedules in the future. What I think is going to be interesting is where Notre Dame goes. There have been rumors that they were interested in the ACC, as well as the more obvious choice of the Big 10. To go to any other conference except the Big 10 would mean ending their rivalries with Mich, Mich State, and Purdue. No matter what they do, they will probably have to end their rivalry with Southern Cal.

The backup NT for Tech is TJ Barnes is 6′7 347. Depending on the opponent, he has rotated with Logan Walls and has played situationally. Walls has 37 tackles, 2 TFL. Barnes has 11 tackles, 2 TFL and 1 sack for -16 yards.
The Georgia and Tech 3-4 defenses are different in the DL alignment and responsibilities as well as LB responsibilities. Georgia plays primarily a 1-gap, and Tech plays a 2-gap, meaning that each defensive lineman is responsible for gaps to his left and right. In a 1-gap, the D-linemen line up in a gap vs. lining up head-to-head opposite the C and OTs. This is a very simplified description, but the 2 schemes are different. Georgia’s NT are ideally suited to the 2-gap that Tech runs, but CTG installed it last year when the available NTs were considerably lighter, if 295 to 300+ can be considered light.

Not all of them make it in the pros, and if they don’t, then they need some kind of quality education in order to find a decent job with some kind of security. Tech can’t even fill it’s 50,000 stadium for any game. So the Red and Black will dominate in your high school stadium. I believe that Woodward Academy’s Colquitt Stadium is actually bigger than Ulysses Grant Field.
Paul Johnson only dominance is at the dinner table. I’d like to see a one-on-one between him and Charlie Weis!

If the refereees hadn’t given GT that game where they stood Jasper Sanks up for half a minute and didn’t acknowledge his touchdown, then GT would only have one win over UGA in the last twenty years….

Super – Some of the students graduating in Housing, the one that is associated with football players (it is usually the most popular major at Georgia each year) might surprise Tech fans. A couple of years ago I looked at the Spring graduates in the Georgia athletic teams. There were several from the equestrian team that were Housing majors. It is a less difficult path to real estate than the Terry Business School’s #5 ranked Real Estate program, but looking at the website, some have successfully taken that route.
As to people who knock junior colleges and state colleges, I don’t think they have a frame of reference. I, on the other hand have traversed the full gamut of state schools, JC, and public and private national universities. Some times you have to go where that path leads.

Against conference opponents tech. averages 27 points and gives up 27 points a game, that being in 7 games. It is nice to pad statistics against FCS opponents.
UGA has averaged 28 points on average for the whole season and the defense has given up on average 15 points a game.
The difference in the two teams, beside the fact that Tech. runs a gimmick offense is the defense of both teams. Tech. will get running yards running the TO, but their defense will give up more yards and points against a conventional college offense. Even Duke, managed to put 30 points up against Tech.
I don’t see Techs. QB killing anybody with his passing game. He is successful when teams get fixated on the run, which Tech. does 90% of the time. UGA has a big, fast and well disciplined front 7 that gets to the ball pretty fast and tackle hard. The Cb’s are disciplined and stay in their assigned areas.
IF UGA’,s RB’s are ready to play, it will make for an even longer day for Tech. Murray, should be able to have a Field day against a porous defensive backfield like tech. has. If the running game, contributes, look for Murray to have the time in the second half to fire away at will. We have the receivers to take advantage of the sieve that is techs. defensive backfield. Tech. will try to blitz a lot the first half so UGA will have to use short passes and a controlling offense, and then Tech. will get weary of that and drop off the blitzing package in a hurry.

48, that’s why CPJ’s offense is so hard to defend against. What you call trick plays are everyday plays for us. That being said, though, I do look for Johnson to do something he hasn’t done yet this year. I still wouldn’t call it a trick play though; just another play from his mental playbook that he hasn’t used much if at all.

Super – The USNA does that for some recruits. They have a Naval Academy Prep School in Newport, RI for selected applicants needing more preparation, and selected Navy enlisted men and women go that route as well. They also prep the USCG and Merchant Marine Academy folks that need it.
I was more familiar with the USAFA Prep School back in the mid-60s, as it was located on the site of the Academy, where my uncle was an instructor. They probably take some athletes, but I don’t know for certain. While I spent much of the summer after graduation with them, my aunt kept trying convince me to enlist and go to the prep school and be a kicker for the Fighting Falcons. Who knows? Maybe in an alternate universe…

When we pass it’s not a pass coming out of the option, per se. Friedgen, when he was OC at Tech, would pass out of the option, and it was a thing of beauty.

The ACC passed on WVU, as did the SEC, so I’ve read. They are in a group of schools ranked #164 by US News, along with Louisville, San Diego State and others.
Since BYU considered and rejected the Big East this week, The BE is now after SDSU. I don’t think that they group they want is going to happen due to lack of confidence in their future. I think it’s more likely that the C-USA/Mtn. West merged conference will be more stable. Nobody has weekly cross-country trips, and the CG winner of that 22-team merged group gets a BCS bid.

If this mega conference continues….
It would be cool to see 4 major conferences SEC, ACC ,BIG 10, PAC 12
SEC ,ACC have a lot of natural rivalries in place. BIG 10 PAC 12 love the tradition of the rose.
The champion of each conference will play in a playoff. SEC vs ACC in the sugar or orange.
BIG 10 PAC 12 in the rose.

Georgia’s offensive line is just too big for us to handle, their skill players simply too big and athletic. As long as they keep the game plan simple, and their wide open receivers (of which they will have many) don’t drop passes, they should have no problems hanging at least 40 on us.
Now, can we keep up? That is the 5 1/2 point question. Thinking here is that Georgia D forces Tevin into about 30+ carries. They are big enough in the middle to shut down the B-Back, fast enough on the edges to handle the A-backs. Don’t see how we carve out more than 20.
It will take turnovers and stupid penalties for us to have a shot tomorrow.

A magazines major at UGA is actually one of the most prestigious journalism degrees available. Grady is easily one of the most esteemed colleges the country. Who makes fun of a major before looking it up? How about looking up UGA grads that are in the publishing industry? TIME magazine ring a bell? And not only that, they’re at the forefront of new media publishing. Just because “magazines” sounds like a fun major to bash…it’s actually more difficult to get into than many programs at Tech…and only admits a few a year. A Housing major is just as beneficial to a college grad heading to the NFL…it focuses on consumer economics and demographic trends. Georgia’s housing demographer is quoted in every news article who needs an expert. If you spout off about something, maybe look it up before you go off on it. Speaking without knowledge means you’re stupid, right?

Nick Saban on todd Grantham:
““He’s done a fantastic job there because they were kind of hurting on defense when he went there,” Saban said. “They’ve really developed into a stellar group.”
“I’ve always thought he’s one of the best coaches I’ve ever had on any staff,” Saban said. “He certainly has a lot of very positive experience in the NFL and some other places. I have a tremendous amount of respect for him.”
So Saban respects Grantham, and a certain sports writer doesn’t.

Refs will be big in this game. They let em play the aggressiveness of Georgia will be too much. Also the marking of first downs, Tech has a lot of inches make the difference series, with that offense. I noticed in that Kentucky game the refs in Athens gave homer marks. One drive in the first half was kept alive by a friendly mark, even the announcers who are trained to keep out of such comments remarked on it. They let the Georgia defense take those shots to the head of the quarterback several times, with both hands. The same thing cost Tech the Va. Tech game. Johnson needs to be on the refs when they come out of the tunnel, this is truly a little man fighting a giant we need all the help we can get. The reason Georgia can play three down is because they are huge, we have such a little team. Also they may have the best linebackers in the SEC. The weakness is discipline and if the refs refuse to give that edge to Tech we lose maybe even big time.

Dang, GT, your poormouthing is almost Munson-like with, “suck a little team.”
If size mattered so much, UGA woulda beat Boise’s butt, but we know how that turned out.
If Tech doesn’t put the ball on the ground, they will get their yards, as always. If UGA can defend the red-zone, maybe limit limit the Jackets to 50-50 (FGs vs TDs), and Murray and Co limits our own turnovers, we have a chance to win.
But If our O-line run-blocks, and pass-protects like last week, we will be in trouble.

Dogs will rumble today. Tech will get some yards, but by the late 3rd early 4th their small O and D lines will begin to yield to the big GA boys in the trenches. Georgia by 14. Mark it down.

For me personally, losing to the GnaTs would hurt a whole hell of a lot more than losing to LSU.

Jack – I think some of the posters aren’t being exactly truthful. If the score is what you predict, that means Tech might have had a chance sometime during the game.

All of the SEC East should take the lifejacket that is being tossed to them now and join the Big East where they may have a chance to play for the nat champ. Since Meyer left Florida this group has become the minor league for the SEC West. It is a Division 1 equivalent of junior college.

For any ACC team to lose to any SEC East team is a disgrace.

Right after Tech joins the Southern Conference where they’ll feel nice and cozy playing Furman and The Citadel. Hell, they’re already on your schedule anyway.

Hey Wreckmaniac -
If you what you say is true, then you must be in a state of disgrace!
That was the easiest victory against Tech in the last 3 years. We had it in cruise control in the second half.
