Michael Turner ran over and around the Titans, and the Falcons rolled to a win (Curtis Compton)
Let’s put aside for a moment that the Falcons set out to serve us a gourmet meal Sunday but their quest for perfection was slightly marred by the overcooked lobster and then dropping the dessert in our laps.
They won again. That’s what they do after losses. No matter how physical or emotional it was. No matter how long public debate seems to stretch into the following week. Of all the things this regime has achieved, one of the most remarkable is that the team’s ability to rebound after defeats.
The latest illustration was Sunday’s 23-17 win over Tennessee, which came on the heels of last week’s overtime loss to New Orleans. The game may have left an after-taste, the result of the offense turning six red zone possessions into only two touchdowns. But there’s something to be said for this team’s resilience.
Under coach Mike Smith, the Falcons are now 16-3 after losses, eight straight wins and 4-0 this year.
“It says a lot about the team,” Smith said. “Regardless of the outcome, we know it’s a long season, we know we have to move on to the next game. From the first day we talked about what the formula is for a successful football team. Part of that is putting defeats behind you. We don’t let things linger.”
Mike Smith inspired Falcons' players with his words the night before the game. (Curtis Compton/AJC)
Smith hammered it home again Saturday night. His speech to the team, while short on pyrotechnics or even some great revelation, apparently struck the right chord with players.
“It wasn’t anything big, but I think what he said went to everybody’s heart,” center Todd McClure said.
“We’re at a point in the season now where we really need to start hitting our stride,” said tight end Tony Gonzalez. “We’re almost there — we’re not there yet. As Smitty said, we have to start putting things in overdrive. When we have a team down, let’s step on it.”
For most of Sunday, the Falcons looked like the kind of team Smith embraces: physical on both sides with a dominating running game and a stout defense.
Michael Turner, who rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown, said, “Sometimes you have to remember why this team was put together. You have to play smart and play physical. We haven’t been doing that lately. We were losing focus in games.”
The Falcons opened the season with a borderline humiliating loss at Chicago, but rebounded with an emotional win over Michael Vick and the Philadelphia Eagles. Losses to Tampa Bay, Green Bay and New Orleans were followed with wins over Seattle, Carolina and Tennessee, respectively.
They haven’t lost consecutive games since Dec. 6 and 13 of 2009, a streak that has reached 29 games.
“I don’t think it’s arrogance or overconfidence,” Gonzalez said, “but every game we’ve lose this year we felt, ‘Man, we could’ve had that one. Even the Chicago game.”
This isn’t to say the Falcons don’t have flaws. They do. The offense walked over Tennessee with 432 yards. They had a 100-yard rusher, a 316-yarder passer (Matt Ryan) and a 147-yard receiver (Roddy White).
But the result of six red zone possessions were two touchdowns, three field goals and a fumble. Maximum potential: 42 points. Falcons’ net: 23. Great teams don’t leave so many points on the field.
This should have been a lopsided win. But when Titans rookie backup quarterback Jake Locker threw two late touchdown passes, there were a few tense moments on the Atlanta sideline.
But the Falcons played with an attitude and a physical edge they sometimes have been missing. Titans running game Chris Johnson (12 carries for 13 yards) was outgained by one Matt Hasselbeck scramble (17 yards).
That kind of defense will serve this team well. So should the schedule. The Falcons’ 6-4 record doesn’t sparkle but the final six games present great possibilities. Three of their remaining opponents — Minnesota (2-8), Carolina (2-8), Jacksonville (3-7) — have a combined record of 7-23. If the Falcons sweep those, that gets them to nine wins before even addressing the other three opponents (Houston, Tampa Bay, New Orleans).
It all sets up for a nice playoff run. They could use a few more touchdowns. But at least we know resilience isn’t an issue.

On this Thanksgiving week I am just thankful for a win. The schedule sets up nicely for the Falcons and if we can get Julio to stay healthy who knows how far we can go in the playoffs!

Man, I really wish we would just embrace us being a smashmouth, physical RUNNING team.
It’s nice to see Roddy make some big plays and Ryan get back to back 300yard passing games to quiet some of his critics. But this team is at its best when we are dominating the line of scrimmage and keeping the other teams’ offense on the sidelines.
it’s our best shot at beating the Saints and Packers of the world. Punch them in the mouth and run all over them. With timely passes from Ryan when the defense allows it.

Don’t revel too much or too long. The Falcons just beat one of the worst teams in the worst divisions in the NFL. The Titans are not the team nor the organization they use to be. After all who would go out and pay $13M per year ($815K PER GAME) to a running back like Chris Johnson. They let Legarette Blount go 3 yrs. ago and he just ran over 6 would be tacklers in a game today. They are a totally inept team and organization right now.

Where are all the turkeys that said Ryan was a bum. C’mon you whiners – I read it all. Spaghetti arm, couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn door if he was on it. Well he threw 4 balls late today, two were caught and two were not. Thank goodness for Gonzalez and his hands. While Ryan has not been stellar, all in he is one of the best in the league. There isn’t a team that wouldn’t take him. As for your savior and CURRENT No. 1 receiver, he needs to catch more with his hands than his mouth does flies and the Falcons’ odds will increase accordingly.

Roddy White has now become as predictable as the sun rising. Every game he makes a nice catch, every game he has a ball go right though his hands (cast the the game last Sunday) and almost every game he gets a stupid and sometimes costly personal foul penalty.

Thought the “D” was gonna give it to ‘em in the 4th, against a rookie QB. Gotta find a way to get better in the red zone, too. But all-in-all, a great win for the Birdz!!!
Now, if we could “win out”, we just might win the division, or at least a wild card berth.

The Falcons play so well after losses because Smith’s attitude is always the same. He’s the anithesis of Jim Mora. Mora’s teams woud go on long winning streaks, but they’d also go on losing streaks. They took on his personality, just as this team does Smith’s.

Ive dissed and will continue to dis Ryan. He cant consistently hit the deep ball; the pass to White being the exception– we need more exceptions.
When safety injuries forced Christopher Owens into the game, I knew we were screwed. And sure enough, both Locker TDs were to the guy Owens was covering. All of Locker’s big passes (save the bomb against Duanta) were against Owens … just like the Green Bay playoff burning.
Why does Owens still get a paycheck?
How can Bosher still be on this team?!?!

Smith’s call to go for it on 4th down at the end was inane. Even though they made it on an offsides penalty, Turner fumbled two plays later. We could have put the game away with a simple field goal. This is directed towards Charlie, Eric C., and any other clown who wants to take shots when I’m not around (I.E. Today’s Live Game Blog)…
Some of you are either mentally or just pathologically deranged. I’ve given up trying to be nice to you. Jeff Schultz, we’ve had an agreement for a number of years. I’ve gone out of my way not to try to burn one of your blogs down or search out any of your bloggers via means that aren’t will we say are not ethically correct. But you know, tonight I came on read the game blog after I finished my grad school work that took up all of my day as well doing some things at my Mother’s church down in Macon. See, I can care less about your fanatic pursuit of the Atlanta Falcons. I gave up my season tickets that I kept even when I was living across the country when they hired Bobby Petrino. The day I became just a pro football fan again instead of Falcon fan my life became a whole lot more fulfilling…
I have said on more than one occasion that Michael Vick is a grown A** man, he made a choice and he paid a price… You need to stop inferring that you know who or what I choose to like in preferences of QBs. But you can take this to the bank and cash it because the funds are there to cover the draft I’m about to write on this blog… Matt Ryan, who I have seen since was a redshirt at BC (Two of my nieces are BC grads, one was in Ryan’s class), us an average NFL QB… Not elite, not the worst, just average… He will disappoint you in every true big game… I don’t regular season, I mean playoff or a game that truly matters… Ask BC fans about Ryan when they needed him (the ACC Championship game). Now, he has a career that is what it is… I said before he took the field in first playoff game when you clowns were decrying the Cardinals as the worst playoff team in history… They waxed him! Blame Milloy, blame Brookings, but that game was in Ryan’s hands, and he put that team in a hole that they never climbed out of again…. Two seasons later, all mighty Matt Ryan did what does best in the real big game, he made Williams an All-Pro in 2 quarters and then had his jock taken when Williams carried it to the house!!! You can use 21 year old Rap songs by a one hit wonder all you want to describe him all you want… Yeah he is just like Vanilla Ice, all played out!!!
Oh Eric C… There are a lot of players on the Falcons that I like, but you’ll never catch me in the lie of saying that it is one Matt Ryan… It ain’t about race, it ain’t your phony Michael Vick excuse, it is my history of watching him fail… Now you can call me out of my name all you want tonight, get it all in… I’m going to get up in the morning and read it all, and I’ll take notes… You better make it worth your while, because the next time I see you online, and you are stupid enough to start to take a shot my way, I’m going to burn your internet house down! Not threat, not a joke, a stone cold promise! And just like January 16th, the morning after your boy went out like a Patty, I won’t be saying a thing, except I told you so… It is still satisfying to remember the silence… The same goes for any of the rest of you creeps too!

WHY should I be NICE to a dead man? Dawg fans are not nice to LIVING Tech fans. Read your bible and see how many people will actually go to heaven. have any of you ever met a person that says they are going to hell? Does anybody say I love the person and they were real nice but they are going to hell now that they are dead.
97% of the people you know and Love re not going to HEAVEN. Those are the Bible numbers. many that THINK they are Christians or Muslims or Jews will have to FIGHT in the Holy War on the side of God or Satan. What lil we know about LARRY do you think he LOVE the Lord with ALL his Heart? i say NO. He LOVED UGA Football more than anything.
I know I am going to get MUCH hate POSTS on this, but I don’t care. The all you have to do is accept Christ stuff is true, but if you TRULY did that it would show in your life. The HOLY SPIRIT would show in ALL your Life’s Actions. Your heart would be burning with LOVE for CHRIST with a passion that makes your post about your football teams pale in comparison.

Two biggest stories coming out of Sunday….
1-OK, this one ain’t really that big for anyone with brains…but Ryan can throw it deep. (Hate to say “I told you so” BUT…I told you so….) This just serves as more proof against ignorance. Gotta love enlightenment. I guess the news here is that he can throw it deep with accuracy. That hadn’t really been established yet. A couple of more games like that and we’re good.
2-THANK YOU RODDY. I knew you were the real deal. Professional adjustment, whether it was mental or something else, true pros do what Roddy did. Now, no relaxing! Keep moving forward and you achieve what very few ever can.
Other stuff…lay off Turner. Fumbles happen. This is the NFL. BVG-this soft-zone sh”!§ has GOT to stop. Conservative football can lose you games, there was NO WAY the Titans should have even had a chance in this one at the end. Talk about trying to hand it over. Damn, man.
Overall-Good win after a depleting loss against a very respectable team. Nothing to define a season over, but definitely a good puzzle piece. Suuuccch good new to see Roddy back, this guy (when he’s playing like he can…see Sunday) is a HUGE part of this team and it’s identity of a winning franchise. All smiles here after that one.
JSS…*rolls eyes* So many holes in your boat I won’t even bother…just let it sink.

@ Kyle – Want to please clarify? Four Falcons losses this year-
@Chicago – Opening day on the road against a pretty damned good team it seems. The only one they weren’t really in. Agreed, they haven’t shown they can beat them. Yet. The Falcons have figured out a ton of stuff since then and are getting better and better. Chicago just lost their starting star QB. Ouch.
@ Tampa – Tampa DESPERATELY wanted to beat Atlanta, they played the house for that one. Tampa still should have lost that one. Atlanta was in that one. Means they can beat them.
Green Bay – Troublesome offense shut down after a hot start. Got conservative too early. Another score by Atlanta somewhere in the last three quarters and Green Bay’s undefeated season would not be so. Play that game again today and see what happens. Bottom line. Falcons were in that game. Could have won. Means they can beat them. (and that is the best team in the NFL we’re talking about, BTW).
New Orleans – Obviously could have swung either way on that one. Can beat them. No problem. The Saints are lucky as hell they didn’t a) get beat and b) get beat by a lot. Ah well. Like last year, let’s see if we can remedy that by beating them at home.
Other top teams- San Francisco-Run heavy team. Falcons are 2nd in the NFL in run defense. Not a bad draw for Atlanta. Can beat them. Dallas, New York, Detroit – Good but beatable inconsistent teams. The Falcons have been improving after a shaky start. The only team in that group that can say the same is Dallas. And their Defense is questionable. Bottom line. Can beat them.
See the point?

Looks like the coaching staff is relapsing into its old ways. They put 21 back in there, you know the guy that couldn’t cover my grandma on her hoveround. As soon as the rookie QB came down the field, who does he burn on the Titan TD pass? Yep, you guessed it. 21.
Wake up coaches, this guy is a special teams player at best.
I also fear the criticism leveled at 2 and the OC are more accurate than I previously thought. Has to be the most boring game offensively I’ve seen. The Falcons are totally vanilla and don’t seem to be capable of blowing out anyone.

I don’t agree. The current Falcons team won’t beat GB; oh sure there’s a chance if Rodgers gets hurt, etc. but you gotta remember 21 will be put ont he field at some point by the coaches.
If we make the playoffs, we better hope someone else takes them out first.

I thought the offensive coaching was horrible at times yesterday save the QB sneak and drawing the D offsides (obviously after the OT debacle of the weak before they practiced those things to show off to us jaded fans). The Titans were one big play from tying the game due to our anemic play calling in the second half. This team has no killer instinct and it starts with Mike Smith and Mike Mularkey. When you are moving the ball settling for FG’s will eventually get you beat against decent teams. We are lucky we are playing bad teams for the next few weeks, but the Falcons coaching staff needs to grow a pair and learn to finish these mediocre teams.
The defense played a great game. No real complaints other than DeCoud completely missing an open field tackly, but that’s about par for him. Grimes is the only keeper in our secondary.

Yesterday I was impressed with Dunta Robinson. He actually defended a few passes and covered well. Running defense was stout, those guys were flying to the ball. We blew a few on our soft pass coverage. Punt/kick game was good. Someone earlier on here was bashing Bosher … his average was low but he remember he had one short field kick where he pinned them down. One problem I see is #14 Weems, he can’t return kicks anymore, he had a penalty and he also blocked a guy into the fair catch receiver (no penalty) … he has become a dirty player. On offense the running game pounded them. Spring Turner outside and good things happen. Our receivers were prime. O-line played very well. We kinda went to sleep in the 3rd quarter and allowed them to come back but this is the NFL … we held on and won. Bring on the Vikings!

5150 UOAD – You seem to be lacking the compassion of the Christ that you claim to have a relationship with. While I agree that submission of your life to Jesus Christ and acceptance of His Lordship determines whether or not you will spend eternity with Him in heaven or apart from Him in hell, I also know that those who love Him become like him. I think a good read of Mattew 7:1-5 and 7:21-23 might benefit you. The Lord has compassion for all people and takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked (Note: I’m not calling Larry Munson wicked. I really don’t know anything about him, but I imagine that he was a good man.). See Ezekiel 18:23. The very thing that makes Jesus worth worshipping is His compassion toward people. The only harshness he ever displayed was when he put a stop to those who were using or controlling others in His Father’s name. Your action here seem to be the same type of actions that Jesus would have harshly criticized. Do your actions here on this board really bear the fruit that displays to the world that Jesus is glorious (Matthew 7:16)? Maybe you should think about that some and repent of your attitude toward your fellow human beings.

We are 2-2 against the Packers with Rogers at QB, so yes, they are beatable, because we already beat them.
The big knock on Ryan is he has not one a playoff game, and while valid, it does not mean we never WILL win one.
There was at time it looked like Brady cannot lose, but he has. It took years for Payton Manning years to win one.
So, all the criticism for past performance is valid, but it by no means predicts the future, and it does not matter what anyone thinks, because Ice is gonna be here for awhile.
And for all those who say he cannot throw the deep ball, he kinda put a spanking on you yesterday too. I said all season, this team is going to play its best when it means the most this season. Smitty has them on the right track.

Mularkey needs to forget about the “heavy package” of two tight ends. It rarely works. In short yardage the Falcons need to go with a two back set of Turner and Rodger. Teams are crashing and the edges are wide open. Fake to Turner and pitch to Rodgers. It would have scored a TD against the Saints and Titans. At least it slows down the linebackers.

Agree Ole Falcon. They really need to work on their red zone offense. If they could have punched it in a couple of times with all those trips down their against the Saints they would have won, and the Titans were able to make it close yesterday due to their inability to put up six in the red zone. It’s not the players’ fault, it’s the no-imagination playcalling. The neverending problem with their OC, too predictable.

Get ready Falcons and Saints fans; looks like the stars are going to align for a first round playoff game against each other. The Pack and Niners have the bye weeks pretty much locked down. Boys and Giants will battle for the division title and the other will be left in the cold, leaving the Saints, Falcons, Bears, and Lions vying for the remaining three spots.
The Lions have to play the Pack twice, Saints,, and some teams from the AFC West – they will lose at least three games and finish at 10-6.
The Bears have an easy schedule will finish 12-4 or 11-5
Figuring the Falcons run the table (along with Saints with the exception of losing to ATL on 12/26) both teams end up 12-4 with the Saints getting the tie breaker for the division and the Bears getting the tie breaker on the Falcons.
Another playoff game between the two will only add to an already stellar rivalry.

Suddenly the playoffs are in reach. . .not only do the Falcons have one of the easier remaining schedules in the league, but all of the teams around us in the NFC standings will be playing one another down the stretch. For example, as long as we keep taking care of business, no matter the outcome Saints/Lions, it helps us–if Detroit wins, it could put us in a tie with New Orleans, if the Saints win, we pull even with Detroit and win the tie-breaker.
It’s looking good.

RIP Larry…you are missed. Now onto yesterdays game. Ryan looked really sharp even on a couple of scrambles. Turner was on fire…late in the game you saw Tenn defenders making arm tackles on him. Palmer looks side a solid back-up for Gonzo. Harry Douglas continues to show why he is needed on this team. O line did a good job…Roddy for the 2nd week in a row had a pass hit him in the hands in the endzone late in the 4th that would have clinched the game and he didnt make the play. And predictably Van Gorder dialed up the all to familiar prevent scheme late in the game when pressure was needed. And even more predictably Mularkeys play calling in the red zone kept us out not execution. Try something odd like a shovel pass or a direct snap to Quizz or maybe even a half back pass to Gonzo in the end zone….anything..just cannot settle for 3.

Ugly win for sure. Not sure which was uglier, the one in Athens or yesterday. I’m serious when I say this. Does Roddie need a vision check a la Brian McCann. One ball litterally whiffed though his
hands in the end zone as he more or less clapped at it. I’m not so sure he’s seeing it like he used to. Either that or crack like the rest of them. Lastly, why oh why can’t we just put them away so I can change the channel, run to the fridge (Or bathroom, depending on need and amount of beer I drink.). But,,,,,,,nnnnnoooooo. We gotta string it along, drag the damn thing out and give me gas. The Falcons are taking a toll on my health. My mother told me it was unhealthy to hold it in too long. I ask simply this. Jeff,
The Falcons opened the season with a borderline humiliating loss at Chicago, but rebounded with an emotional win over Michael Vick and the Philadelphia Eagles. Losses to Tampa Bay, Green Bay and New Orleans were followed with wins over Seattle, Carolina and Tennessee, respectively..
I’m a big fan of the Falcons, but I’m not impressed. If Vick doesn’t get hurt, do the Falcons win that game? Also, the other teams they played after losses were Seattle, Carolina, and Tennessee. Seattle had a chance to win, but missed a game winning FG, Carolina is 2-8, and we let Tennessee hang around, despite them losing their QB.
Falcons still have lots of room for improvement (imo).
Do you have the Falcons record with Julio Jones, and their record without him? If I’m not mistaken, they have a winning record when he doesn’t play, and a losing record when he does. Not sure what to make of it.

What is funny, there are those who do not credit Ryan, and say it was Turner who won it. Our line was opening holes because Ryan was calling the plays at the line, and calling plays and blocking scheme as dictated by the defenses, and got turner to the 2nd level to where does his thing.

Try to tell me with a straight face that the Saints and their fans weren’t p*ssing in their pants while the Falcons drove 90 yards and tied that game. Damn near won it. Rabbit’s foot up your a$§ that we didn’t. That’s OK, use up your damned luck now, you won’t have it later, it won’t save your a%$ all the time. But good for you, you got the W, for now. We play for the division for real in week 15.

@JSS — I’ve been traveling —- got on-line noticed your posts —- what’s up with you?? Why have you lost your patience with folks, “you are the self proclaimed wise kid of sports”?? You sound like a whiner “as in wine” that needs some cheese to go with your “whine or wine”. Are you trying to achieve something you prefer not, the point is something is up with you, is it with mom or you?? Don’t forget as you stated in your own words, and i quote, “I chose to move back to ATL from SF to take care of my mom”. Hey relax, go get a new J.O.B. or something, “a life” maybe……
I am glad to hear you are working on your MBA, however you should know most of these bloggers don’t really care about whether you get or obtain an MBA!

Doesn’t matter about your daddy — if you really knew him, you wouldn’t be the little “drip” you are today!

The Falcons can play with and beat any team in the NFL.
The reality is that they should be favored vs every team they play till the Aints game at the Sewer Dome.
Whether they will……remains to be seen. What doesn’t remain to be seen, its well documented……is that it’s utterly pathetic that dude’s practically break a sweat typing about NFL teams. It’s a corporation. It’s entertainment. They all play for a paycheck……….if anybody thinks that more than 4-5 guys on the Packer’s roster give a damn about Green Bay you’re an idiot. They like the check. How many of them live there? How many are from there? Damn few.
Same for Pittsburg. Same for New England. Same for most of the league.
I love the NFL, it is fantastic entertainment. It’s cool to root for the local team, but don’t have a heart attack and make personal attacks against other folks who are simply observers of entertainment as well, whether they like the same team you do or not.
Cheers.

The Falcons won in impressive fashion against the Titans last Sunday. Like the Seattle game and many others this year, the Falcons built a lead and then STOPPED PLAYING hoping to hang on and win the game. This formula should be halted immediately or the Falcons will not make the playoffs this year or any other year for that matter. I WONDER WHAT MAKES A TEAM FLAT OUT QUIT PLAYING FOOTBALL AFTER SCORING ONLY TWO TOUCHDOWNS. I’LL NEVER UNDERSTAND IT, BUT I’M SURE IT COMES FROM MANAGEMENT(SMITH) ON DOWN TO THE PLAYERS. That type of mindset should not be tolerated but I see it EVERY TIME the Falcons play football. To watch it gives me a sick feeling in my stomach each time.

For Mike Smith's Atlanta Falcons Being Positive is Key
November 23rd, 2011
5:48 pm
[...] This, though, is something Smith has always prepared for. He believes good teams don’t lose two games in a row and preaches getting over losses quickly. Atlanta allows itself 24 hours after a defeat to review film and learn what to do better, then immediately moving on and focusing on the next game. This explains why the Falcons have a great (16-3) record after setbacks under Smith; why they were recently able to bounce back after a crushing fall to the rival New Orleans Saints. [...]
