Legend has it that W.C. Fields was lying in a hospital bed, his organs significantly pickled, when somebody walked in and was astonished to see Fields holding a Bible. When asked why he suddenly had interest in the Bible, Fields responded: “I’m looking for loopholes.”
I’m not sure why this story reminds me of Georgia. Maybe because at 0-2, nothing short of locusts overtaking the rest of the SEC East figured to leave the door open for the Bulldogs. Then came the Stephen Garcia-Marcus Lattimore-John Brantley trifecta of Old Testament plagues and suddenly Mark Richt had a loophole to drive his F-150 through.

W.C. and the Dogs found the loophole.
And now all the Bulldogs have to do is … beat Kentucky? This is sort of like the Allied Forces overrunning Eastern Europe and then being told, “OK. So there’s this nice little coffee and danish stand in Liechtenstein. Take over that, and we’ll declare you the winner.”
Georgia has won eight straight. It’s coming off a 45-7 win over Auburn. Kentucky is 1-5 in the SEC. Its only victory was the last pie in the face Ole Miss could take before drop-kicking Houston Nutt. When you provide a new level of humiliation for Ole Miss, you know something is wrong.
Kentucky? Great. Can I get a latte to go?
I know. Everybody’s assuming that even if the Dogs put the wraps on the East, they’re going to get plucked, stuffed and roasted by LSU. Whatever. In the words of the poet, Otter, who turned to Hoover as the Delta House was circling the Faber College drain: “I’ve got news for you, pal. They’re going to nail us no matter what we do. So we might as well have a good time.”
Toga party!
(Granted, I’m struggling with the visual of Mark Richt in a toga.)
The line is a whopper: 30½. Not really comfortable with that. But after last week, I’ll err to the side of a wrecking ball. Dogs win, cover and float on air to the Georgia Dome.
Toga, Toga, Toga . . .
Faber College
(Where Knowledge is Good)
Georgia Tech at Duke: The fact it’s been a better-than-expected season for the Jackets is overshadowed by the gut-punch that a win over Virginia Tech could’ve turned Tech-Duke into a potential ACC Coastal clincher. Instead, Tech-Duke is preserved in its usual state. Nobody cares. That’s just how Mike Krzyzewski likes it. Tech covers 10½.
Alternate Universe Bowl: Tennessee is 0-6 in the SEC . Vanderbilt is one win from being bowl eligible. I don’t know about you, but I’m getting tired of the school in Nashville holding up the football end of things in Tennessee. It’s clear Vandy coach James Franklin has changed the culture on campus: safety Andre Simmons was just charged with armed robbery. Vandy, this is your SEC Bar Mitzvah! Commies cover 1½ on the road.
LSU at Ole Miserable: The Rebels’ quarterback and running back were suspended, but they’ve been playing without a coach for years. Watching Nutt go down in flames is the hardest I’ve laughed since Wile E. Coyote suddenly realized too late that he had run off the mountain road. Don’t look down, Houston: LSU covers 29½.
Houston: You have a problem (poof)
Georgia Southern at Alabama: It’s the battle of No. 3s: FBS vs. FCS. Both are 9-1. One couldn’t get past LSU. The other couldn’t get past Appalachian State. I give the coaching edge to Jeff Monken over Nick Saban because his team hasn’t been held to two field goals in any game this season. I’ll dance with the 45 (sucker). Tide win, but don’t cover.
Virginia at Florida State: Virginia is rolling, but something tells me the love train is derailing. Just as well. Al Groh is starting to get really irritated. Seminoles cover 17½.
Mississippi State at Arkansas: Dan Mullen is looking a week ahead to a win (Mississippi). Bobby Petrino is looking a week ahead to an oncoming train (LSU). Piggies win, but take the Bulldogs and 13½.
Packers and Lesser Beings
Tennessee at Falcons: And for his next trick, Mike Smith is going to do a “Triple Lindy” off the top of the hot-dog stand behind section 243 into an empty box of Milk Duds, from where he will signal for a triple-reverse halfback option. Please. No more daredevil acts on fourth down. Just give me a grilled cheese and a side of boredom. Falcons cover 6.
Smitty’s Triple Lindy (through YouTube, damn embedding police)
OK, last editorial on the decision (because Herm is funny)
Philly at N.Y. Giants: The Eagles are 3-6, which basically means they have to win the last seven games and get four losses reversed on replay to meet 14-2 projections. They are so dead. Fortunately, it’s not like they’ve tied up $100 million in one player. Oh, wait a minute. Giants cover 4½.
Sick Bay at Green Bay: Aaron Rodgers: 28 touchdowns, 3 interceptions and a bottomless beer mug at any Fantasy football draft. Packers cover 14 over Tampa.
Carolina at Detroit Correctional Institute: After tearing off Jay Cutler’s helmet and nearly his head last week, Lions assault weapon Ndamukong Suh declared, “Part of the game.” Where, Leavenworth? Lions cover 7.
Buffalo at Miami: After scoring a touchdown in Dallas last week, David Nelson ran down the sideline and hugged a Cowboys cheerleader (his girlfriend) and gave her the football. I figure if there’s hope for a Bills’ player, there’s hope for everybody. “Hey, babycakes. Wanna see my steno pad?” Fish win, but take Buffalo and 2½.

“The safest way to double your money is to fold it over once and put it in your pocket.” — Kin Hubbard.
Last week (not so hot): 9-3 straight up, 5-7 against the line. Overall: 90-37 straight up; 76-50-1 against the line. “Sack Schultz” update: Jim Layfield of Millsboro, DE., went 15-0 last week. He used darts. It’s still a tight race for the UGA-Tech tickets and the trip to Hawaii.

For the last time: the only thing wrong with the decision was the play call. Not only did they not simply spread the field and run a sneak, but they ran the exact same formation they had prior to the Saints time out, taken to detect what sort of play the Falcons were planning. Just incredibly bad coaching.
The good part is any expectations of this team being elite any time soon are gone, so Sundays will be more relaxing and less of an emotional rollercoaster. Thanks?

Meanwhile, Crowell said he will be 100 percent for Saturday’s game. However, he said has been playing with ailments all season.
“I have always stayed pretty healthy,” said Crowell, who leads the Bulldogs with 821 yards rushing in nine games. “I’ve had, you know, small stuff, but it wasn’t back-to-back like this. … Something hurts all the time, but I’m getting used to it. It’s mostly aches and bruises.”

Am I in the minority in thinking GT has had a successful season after exceeding expectations from pre-season?
Winning Record. Bowl Eligible. Record setting victory/revenge on Kansas.
Optimism going into next season. Upset of a top ten ACC rival.
Not bad considering what I was anticipating back in August. Hopefully the good press helps in recruiting come January. Especially on the DEFENSIVE side of the ball.

They say not to pick an underdog unless you believe that they can actually win the games. I’m bucking that. Give me Duke and the 10 1/2 and Virginia and the 17 1/2.
Tech SHOULD beat Duke. However several factors make me believe that it will be closer than expected if not an outright upset.
1. Week and a half off since Thursday game.
2. No energy in stadium from opposing crowd. Tech’s not famous for bringing their own energy to these games.
3. Duke’s played several common opponents tough.
4. Cutcliffe is likely to have some offensive wrinkles for Al’s defense.
Something tells me that Tech will come out flat. I hope we don’t come out so flat that we let Duke get a sizeable early lead.
UVa has surprised a lot of people this year. They’re not the pushover that people expect them to be (it’s hard to live down a long held reputation). FSU was eliminated from the running in their division last week. Should be closer than 2 and a half touchdowns.

Just a few remarks from the GS Eagle Nation. We’re ready to soften the Tide up for Auburn and we look forward to another playoff run. With a break or two, we could bring home title #7. Y’all want to know what makes being a GS fan so good? Titles EARNED on the field, upcoming playoff runs, and a team and coaching staff dedicated to giving 110 per cent each time we tee it up. There will be even more of a mirror effect going on at Bama this weekend than Jeff mentions with our both being #3 in our respective divisions. Our unis are of similar design, we are both back to our dominant ways, and we share a winning tradition. We were even called the Blue Tide in the 1930’s.
Our biblical loophole is the story of David vs. Goliath, Maybe we can bring a few stones from Beautiful Eagle Creek and fell the giant, but if not, we’ll give it all we have and hope to avoid any injuries that might hurt us in the playoffs.
Count on this: We’ll show up, play hard, and do our best.
See y;all in Tuscaloosa.

@ Alphare — Playing one “complete” game doesn’t qualify you for anything. Winning 9 games in a rown and going 7-1 in conference play does. The team doesn’t make the schedule, they just play it — and when they win more games than anyone else in the division, that qualifies them — See how that works?

@Alphare – Assuming that they blow out UK as they should on Saturday, UGA is indeed the rightful winner of the SEC East. No need to disparage that distinction. It’s a matter of chance that no one on this team could control or foresee that their regular season schedule would not include the 3 top teams in the conference (all in the West) and that the traditional top-tier teams in the East are in a down cycle. These things happen.

that seems too easy to be in a Champ game. If I have to pick 2 teams to play in the SEC Champ game, I am not sure I would pick UGA, who struggled badly against the mighty Vandy and lost to BSU and SC. BTW, SC still holds a tie-breaker against UGA.

You’re correct, SC still holds the tie-breaker against UGA and should the Dawgs lose to Kentucky, SC would be playing in the SECCG. Would you “pick” them? I don’t think anyone can argue that UGA is playing the best football in the East right now, so why not let them get hammered by LSU, Bama, or ARK?

Jeff – Dawn Of The Dogs was very funny.
For what it is worth, no one was feeling sorry for Richt the years we had two of the Arkansas, Bama, LSU combo plus Auburn. Historically you would look at UF, Auburn, UT, USC, Boise (this decade), and Tech on a schedule and not think it was a cake walk. I don’t know if Georgia is a top ten team. I do believe, schedule or not, that we have improved greatly over the season.
gtne80

@Dawglasville – Anyone who has seriously watched UGA over the course of the season would have to agree that they are a much better team at this point than they were when they played Carolina. As a Tech fan, I wish we’d have been playing UGA the third game of this year instead of the last.
JB

Mistake folk make with the Dawgs. This team today is in no way the same team that opened the season. Richt’s teams have historically gotten better as the year went on, and this one is no different. Tech thinks they will play the Georgia team that lost to Boise. So will LSU. This team has some talent and swagger and speed and size….and posting won’t make believers out of anyone, but the games will.
No AU folks hanging out here I see after all their threats before we played them.

@JB – This Tech fan doesn’t think that we will be playing the same team that lost to Boise and SC. Some might, but I’m not that blind. LSU might also, but the problem is that with LSU’s talent, I don’t think it’ll make that much difference. Could be that you catch them coming out flat to start the game, but they’ll warm up quickly.

GA Southern gets UGA in 2012, Florida in 2013, LSU in 2014 and GT in 2015. New 50,000+ sq. ft. Football Complex announced for Paulson Stadiium, w/12,000 sq. ft. football only weight room, locker room, offices, GSU Hall of Fame, etc. so every dollar helps.
Good call on Georgia Southern beating the spread. Whoever made that line must have thought Alabama was playing Georgia State again this year.

gtne80 – great post. I am concerned about Tech. I think we match up better than we have in the past 3 years now that Samuel has shown the other backs how to run hard between the tackles and because our defense seems to be more disciplined. If the Tech team who showed up to play Clemson shows up then they could give anyone fits.

I would take Miss St. and 29 1/2 also. Unfortunately the spread for that game is 13. As far as your Garcia-Lattimore-Brantley trifecta, I’m not sure I follow. SC had Lattimore and Garcia when Auburn beat them and UF was had Brantley when UGA won that game. In case you haven’t noticed, Jeff, Brantley stinks.

Call me crazy, but I think Georgia matches up nicely against LSU. Our offense is playing better than Alabama’s right now… and while I don’t think Georgia’s defense is nearly as good as Bama or LSU, think they are good enough to stop LSU’s offense. The question will be can Aaron Murray limit mistakes and not give points to the LSU defense.

Alphare, you’re dripping with sarcasm. No Bulldog fan in their right mind thinks we can “beat LSU like a drum.”
We haven’t faced a Chavis-led defense like theirs, since well, the last time we faced Chavis – in ‘09. In that game he held us without a 1st down for the whole 1st half. He also did some major shutting-down of Richt’s offense a couple of times at UT.
In the same manner LSU will slow down our offense, though, I think our D can slow down LSU’s offense.
My opinion.

Do you think we can score 25 on an LSU defense? Because I think thats what it comes down to. Their defense is deeper and better than ours. Not that ours is a slouch by any measure but they have enough offense for 3 touchdowns against our defense. They have an excellent power running game and it is deep. Can Murry move the offense against that swarming lightening fast defense of LSU I believe is what it will come down to

Logic would dictate a low scoring game but, I’m not so sure. The Dawg D is great against the run but we haven’t faced a running game like LSUs. They have 3 bruisers and they can pound. If I were going to take the over/under, I’d take it over 50. I believe Murray is capable of exposing that LSU secondary, the question is, will he? If he does the score is higher than one might anticipate

I’m sure we’ll also hear from Gary Danielson about how overmatched we are on both sides of the ball, even if we were to win.

I guess you have already forgotten that South Carolina beat your team this year……and like Florida, they were severely hindered by critical injuries to their football team….and they are young, like Florida, and will be back and strong next year. What seperated Georgia from Florida and South Carolina this year was a season altering injury to a critical player on both teams…..Brantley and Lattimore. So appreciate you light schedule in the SEC and the fortunate of not losing your best or most critical player this year……such fortune does not come around every year. The SEC East next year is going to be even better than the SEC West this year. Georgia, SC, and Florida are going to be very good. Vandy is going to be very dangerous…..and Tennessee is going to be highly improved (they also suffered major injuries to their two best players this year (QB and WR). Things will definitely be different in the SEC East next year…..so enjoy while you can.

With exception to the Green Bay Packers, this Atlanta Falcons team as it relates in preparedness is no different than any other NFL club. Granted the lock-out as expected in the first 4-6 regular season games, the players needed that much practice & game time to get their conditioning and bodies into football shape. This season has been very frustrating to say the least. You’ll note most teams are dealing with groin & hamstring injuries (FOLKS: they were out-of-shape, when the lock-out was over). My bet is this season these types of injuries are at an all time high if not close.
The coaching staff has work to do! Yes indeed, they were caught unprepared too. Sure just know they were doing their own check-up methods of the players during the lock-out (you can bet on that). But the bottom-line it’s BS, the product on the field this year as compared to previous seasons is NOT the same.
That is with exception to the Green Bay Packers!
The 4th in 1 call last week by Smitty — is 50/50, “if we make it” he’s a genius only if we win the game. “We didn’t make it”, so 50% of you think he’s a “schmuck” —- “so what”- who really cares what you folks think.
Smitty is a “Good” coach, is he an “elite SB coach, that’s yet to be determined”?
This coaching staff is having issues working together???? In ALL three phases of team/player performance??? Maybe it’s because of the goofy season, maybe because the players & coaches were so out-of-shape before the lock-out was settled???
There is very much ONE glaring PLUS sign this season….#2 as expected showed up to play football! He is performing his brilliance on the field ever week. He is not an “Elite QB yet” & “he knows it”. Sure you’ve got those that think #2 is a noodle-arm, maybe true, maybe not. The guy is a winner, Smitty is very much aware and knows this to be a fact. My opinion #2 will take us to the SB one day, probably NOT this season, but its coming.
“YES” There is definitely something to said about #2 and the “No Huddle” play calling. Maybe Matt Ryan has passed Mularkey, maybe Smitty & TD need to be searching for the next “BEST TEACHER” for #2??? Hey it happens, Jimmy Johnson changed three OC/Play callers before he settled on “Zambezi”. I promise you Jerry Jones didn’t make that call and Jerry knows it! Three SB wins in 4 appearances ain’t bad.
Folks,,,The Green Bay Packers are FOR REAL!!!!

Could quite possibly be the most unfounded opinion I have ever heard. All those talking about Brantley playing on one leg, but he sure as heck moved well in the pocket to get that one TD pass off in the first half. Looked healthy doing it. But after 4 Jarvis Jones sacks, no QB is going to look as healthy after that. But want to try excuses, your team of winners wouldn’t have been up at all if we would have had Malcolm Mitchell for the game and Geathers and WIlliams for the first half (where your mighty lead came from). Notice how nothing happened after those two came back in. That’s how good the team is at full strength.

In 2007- UGA didnt win their conference, I dont care if they are the hottest team in football right now no Conference championship not NC shot.
2011- Mark May- Alabama should get a rematch against LSU for a NC shot even though they didnt win conference
Holtz- I think Oregon should get a rematch vs LSU.
Then you have the Bama homers that think just bc they lost to a better team than we did in 07 that, that makes it different. Sorry morons its the same exact principle but I wouldnt expect that bunch of retards to even know the difference in a sneeze and a wet fart.

My biggest though though is this, isn’t the championship (since there is no playoff system) supposed to put the TWO BEST TEAMS against each other at the end of the year? I am no LSU or BAMA fan but if they are the TWO BEST TEAMS, then so be it. It sucks seeing games for the NC where the second best SEC team is probably better than the opponent of the SEC rep in the NC.

We dont care if the rest of college football hates us. Makes us feel special, but ESPN is a Media outlet thats supposed to produce unbiased reporting. But everyone knows thats not true.
Kirk- Ohio State can never do wrong and will always be the best in his eyes.
Mark May- Next year will be right back on that USC sausage.
Lou- Thinks that ND is always the best team and always fails to realize they are only ever good these days bc the get to pick their entire schedule and play weaker teams than Boise in most years.
Jesse Palmer- Went to FLorida and always getting them air time no matter how bad they are
Robert whats his face- Went to Bama, one of the others at eSPN disregarding what they said in 2007 and oulling for Bama to get into title
At least when Pollack talks about UGA he doesnt try and over sell us. He tells it straight up and is prob the momst unbiased.

Heading home from a biz trip to B’ham this afternoon I came across the Ga Sou team buses with State Trooper escort heading west… and they weren’t flying a white flag or counting their Benjamins… Give ‘em Hell Eagles and scare the piss outta the Tide.

Schultz wants to say that nobody cares about the Tech/Duke game, because Schultz likes to put down Tech. That’s what sports writers
are for, you know. But the fact is, which even a sports writer should
know, that the more wins the better the bowl. So we do care, Schultz.

Can’t wait for the mutts to play a top 20 team (LSU) in the championship game to really see what kind of team they have since loosing to first two top 20 teams.

I always look forward to your Thursday column, Shultz. I do miss “the Count” though. Keep up the good work.

Check out the article today in the “Tennessean” in Nashville about the Falcons OL playing “dirty”. This coming from a town who has Cortland Finnegan. Wonder if this article will end up on the Falcons’ bulletin board?

Last night the Okie State Cowchips lost to Mr. Potato Head. So there are only two undefeated teams left: LSU and Houston. So what happens if Tech beats Georgia and Georgia beats LSU? Houston’s record is over teams like Georgia State, the second best team inside I-285. So who plays for the National Championship? Who is the best One Loss team? Gotta to go with Alabama versus Virginia Tech for all the marbles.
