Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham shouldn't be making an issue of his contract in November. (Jason Getz)
If there is one thing that we have learned this season at Georgia, it’s that Todd Grantham is a pretty good coach. The Bulldogs’ defense has improved almost every week this season, and is miles ahead of what it was a year ago.
But we’ve witnessed, courtesy of YouTube, that sometimes Grantham just does dumb things – and here he goes again.
If you missed the stories earlier this week from our Chip Towers, Grantham’s agent is publicly pushing for a raise and contract extension for Georgia’s defensive coordinator. Never mind that the contract still has 14 months to run.
Agent Michael Harrison has been rebuffed by athletic director Greg McGarity, who says he won’t address coaches’ contracts until after the season. And sorry, but Mark Richt’s contract is a slightly higher priority.
Grantham is a coach. It would be a good idea to stick to that for possibly four more games and worry about his finances in January.
I’ve covered player and coach negotiations for nearly 30 years. Let me tell you how this works. Agents generally don’t go rogue. When they talk to the media, it’s at their clients’ urging and/or approval.
Harrison told Chip that he has gotten “inquiries” from NFL teams about Grantham returning to the league as an assistant. He claims he has gotten “feelers” from college teams about being a head coach.
These soundbites are all orchestrated. I understand Harrison is just doing his job for his client. But the client – Grantham – needs to understand bringing this up now is counterproductive. Seriously. Grantham expects the Bulldogs to make a commitment to a defensive coordinator less than two full years into a three-year contract when they haven’t even finalized the head coach’s future yet?
Consider the importance of Georgia’s potential four remaining games: 1) Kentucky, the potential SEC East-clincher; 2) Georgia Tech, the local rival; 3) LSU (probably), the SEC championship; 4) Bowl game opponent, which finalizes rankings and stature.
Should this really be an issue right now?
I’m guessing somebody said something to Grantham follow Monday’s initial story because by Tuesday Grantham was trying to say the right things. Following practice Tuesday night, he maintained that his focus was on the Kentucky game and not his contract.
But when he alluded to Harrison and said, “You hire people to do a job for you and I let him handle that part of it,” it missed the point. Agents work for their clients, not the other way around. This is a public issue now because of Grantham, not his agent.
One more thing: While it wouldn’t stun me if Grantham winds up returning to the NFL, I don’t buy Harrison’s claim of legitimate head coaching offers, certainly not at a major college. Any coordinator who has a head coaching offer would jump at it rather than worrying about using it as leverage.
In other words, this is all drivel we could’ve done without.

You really think CTG is “urging” this? Sounds to me like the most likely scenario is that he’s got an aggressive agent who called him up and said he wants to start talking contract and CTG said “Sure, go do whatever and I’ll just keep coaching.” ”
“This is a public issue now because of Grantham, not his agent.” Hardly. I agree, it’s drivel. So why are you bringing it up? You really couldn’t find something better to write about?

CTG has done nothing wrong. Yes, his agent probably did call McGarity to ” feel him out” because HE IS GETTING CALLS ABOUT HIS CLIENTS SERVICES, because the AGENTS JOB is to look after TODD, NOT THE GEORGIA DEFENSE. Yes, I know Todd has one more year, and it shouldn’t be an issue, but If I remember correctly, Saban WAS UNDER CONTRACT with the Dolphins also.

This Schutlz idiot is the biggest douche to ever grace the AJC. Hey idiot, your own newspaper had an article where Grantham clearly says he is not worrying about his contract right now. According to the article, Grantham says he hired a guy (and agent) to worry about his contract so he can focus on football. No one would even know about his contract if you didn’t write about it. Parents of young kids, if you want your kid to be a total loser in life, tell them to study Schultz. It will get them there as fast as humanly possible.

Hope you’re not right about this Jeff. Although I fear this is par for the course with CTG’s personality (according to what we have witnessed so far). Sometimes he acts without thinking of consequences.
But – I LOVE his fire and coaching of our defense – so I hope after this year we can get him a little bump in salary and let him keep our D dominant for the next few years.
I think we have the talent here, and coming in, to be relevant and in the top 5 for the next few years; but if we have to start over with a new D-C then I am afraid that won’t happen.

When the article and blog appeared earlier this week, most UGA fans were apoplectic to keep Grantham and give him a huge raise. Some even want to make head coach. Just wow. As an objective sports fan in Atlanta I think this guy severely tarnishes the Georgia team. You can do better. He behaves like a thug. Some of you should step back and think about what you would be saying if Florida or Auburn had a coach that did the stuff that Grantham has done.

But, if you want a bump in pay and a couple of years added to your contract, the time to strike is while the iron is hot. Can it get hotter? I don’t think so. I’m afraid the iron may cool some when GT puts up big yardage on us and LSU does the same. I’m sure 4 months ago CTG was thinking he may be out in the cold with the attitude of the AD and the fans. But he turned around the defense in a big way and he just wants to secure his future. I don’t blame him, after all, if you want to judge fan support for a raise and extension, just look at the responses that have been given in his support. He can and will focus on coaching while his agent is trying to get the best deal McGarity can offer. We need CTG or we may end up back in the dark days of another Willie type.

Hey Honky Talkin… they usually do play teams with winning records. It’s not UGA’s fault that Tenn., FL and Auburn stink this year. Even Ole Miss and Miss. St. usually end up with an overall winning record. And don’t even start with Coastal and New Mexico St. All the SEC Teams put a couple of cupcakes in their schedule each year, ESPECIALLY Florida. Look at their NC years and you’ll see 3 or 4.

The Nutt announcement pointed out that head coaching jobs are going to be available. I am not surprised Grantham is interested in advancement and apparently neither is UGA. His agent effectively threw his hat in the ring for those opportunities. You don’t blame people for trying to get ahead in life. The timing is awful but he doesn’t control the timing.
Grantham is coaching his team getting ready for this Saturday. He is a coach and a damn good one. This isn’t a distraction to the team or to him. He also knows that his value will go down if the team plays poorly but I don’t think that’s his motivator. He wants to win. Simple.
If a head coaching opportunity is a good fit for Grantham, I expect him to take it. If not, I hope UGA would win out over the pros as a coordinator but sometimes the money is too much to resist. In any event, it is better to have assistants with options that assistants no one wants.

Grantham might as well jump on the bandwagon too. MsGarity needs to do what he said he was going to do and wait until the season is over before talking contract extensions. LSU might be a little tougher then a lot of loud-mouth, know-it-all UGA fans think. Also let’s see what happens with the bowl game before doing the Richt-lovers a favor and extending Richt’s contract to ten years. McGarity can afford to wait. It will be intersting to see if McGarity sticks to the one-year contracts for assistants. Past behavior doesn’t necessarily dictate the future. I bet McGarity evaluates all the factors including the market for defensive coordinators. If it dictates that top assistants get multi-year contracts, he will most likely do it.
I see the points in the article. I agree that his agent’s comments were either cleared by Grantham or they wouldn’t have been made. Grantham doesn’t have the kind of personality to take a back seat to an agent. I just don’t see it as an unusual issue with a successful coordinator during this time of year.

He is making noise now because his stock will likely drop in the coming weeks. He has been coasting against really bad offenses for 8 weeks now. UGA will shut down Kentucky because Kentucky has the 3rd worst offense in all of college football. After that, there is considerable risk against GT, LSU, and whoever the bowl team is. Then again if he shuts all of those teams down his stock could go even higher.

As for GTBob and all of his ridiculous postings on anything Georgia, even if Grantham were negotiating right now for a contract, it wouldn’t be finalized before GT and LSU so that argument, like so many of your others, goes out the window. Seriously, UGA could cure cancer and GTBob would state that the University backed into it, they were fortunate that other medical research led to it, and somehow the opposing cancer strains led to the scientists being considered more intelligent than they really are.

Jeff Schulz,
Your bringing this up right now is counterproductive. Leave it alone. You have more power to make this a big issue than Grantham. Georgia finally has something going and you have to stir the pot. If you think he shouldn’t be bringing it up then why don’t you leave it alone? Oh I guess you see that as your job. I ask you to consider taking the log out of your own eye instead of criticizing the speck in others. Two wrongs don’t make a right. I would imagine CTG is still angry about that early Monday morning meeting McGarity called him into following the Vandy game. There were plenty of UGA people upset about not only the game but CTG’s juvenile behavior. McGarity gave him another reprimand. Now, CTG’s stock is much higher than McGarity’s and maybe he is just getting even. CTG probably thought he was standing up for his players against a Vandy bully head coach as opposed to demonstrating juvenile behavior.

Following a string of weak opponents, the defense looks great.
Look at the remainder of the schedule. UGA may beat Tech, but Tech will still score 28 plus points. LSU will steam roll UGA. UGA could lose the bowl game again.
What a better time after UGA plays all these weak opponents to bring up contract negotiations.

Shultz makes some very valid points, get over it. Also, it is amusing to watch the fan base go back and forth with Dawg fans going nuts over articles in the AJC last winter (justifiably) questioning the direction of the football program and Richt’s future. Then UGA starts to win this year and all the Yech whiners come out of the woodwork complaining about Shultz and Bradley being UGA homers.
Grantham came to UGA because of the talent level and what could be done with that talent. If he leaves there will be a very long line of qualified candidates to take his place. I doubt he leaves and I bet he gets a raise and some sort of extension.
Let’s beat KY and Yech, then represent well in the SEC championship game and whatever bowl that happens. That result will exceed all but the wildest expectations coming into this year.

Chip, that’s fine and good, but painting this like Grantham is focused on his contract and not his agent doing some pre-marketing for his client is wrong. Grantham has stated he is focused only on Kentucky. Reporting on your conversation with an agent is one thing. Writing articles stirring up trouble like Grantham is shifting his focus to his contract is sort of bogus and out of line. Grantham himself hasn’t come to the media about it, the media went to him. Then Jeff wants to write a column telling Grantham to stick with coaching HAHA. Come on man. Thats exactly what he has been doing. Stop stirring the pot and let him get back to his business!

So I guess you just admitted you were wrong. OK.
My job is to write my opinion. That’s what a columnist. As a general rule, some folks agree, some disagree. If anybody commenting on this blog wrote an opinion piece, I guarantee you the same thing would happen. I welcome all dissenting views. It’s part of the job. Some Georgia fans (such as yourself) believe I’m determined to run off Mark Richt, based on the fact that I’ve criticized the Georgia program during the slide the last couple of years. But what you ignore is all the positive things I wrote about Mark and the program prior to that, and you ignore the fact that I wrote late last season — before the Georgia Tech game, I believe — that he should be brought back this year and NOT FIRED (which, by the way, got me criticized by fans who want him fired). I have not taken a position on Richt’s future beyond this year because, like Greg McGarity, I think he should be judged on the body of work that includes all of this season. Obviously, the fact the Dogs have won 8 straight is a remarkable achievement. So let’s see what happens.

You people need to get a clue!
I love the way the defense is playing now, but Grantham is in no way loyal to UGA and is already bargaining for his next move while everyone’s patting him on the back..
Just watch, he may be at UGA next year, but I can just about guarantee he’s gone in 2013.
God help whoever gets him…A good defensive coach I cannot deny, but he’s a bigger clown.

What do you goobers think a sports writer does in the 24-7 age of the media? They write about topics that come up. You think they shouldn’t report on it because you don’t like it? This is the world, get used to it.
P.S. UGA still has a fan base of rednecks hillbillies. Go Jackets, we don’t win much but basketweaving is not on the diploma list.
And judging by your graduation rates you sure arent’ doing much of anything else either.

Asked about his agent’s comments on Tuesday, Grantham said, “What I do is you hire people to do a job for you, and I let him handle that part of it. My focus is on getting the defense to play well and getting ready for the Kentucky game, and getting ready to win the SEC East, truthfully.”
Grantham’s defense is No. 4 in the nation statistically for a Bulldogs team that has won eight straight games. A win over Kentucky on Saturday will clinch a berth in the Dec. 3 SEC Championship Game in the Georgia Dome.
Grantham, 45, acknowledged he would like to become a head coach some day, but he said playing in the title game is currently dominating his thoughts.
“I think everyone wants to become a head coach,” he said. “First of all, I have a very good job. I was excited to come here because of the vision I had about what I felt you could do with the type of players you can get at the University of Georgia. I’m very excited to be here. Truthfully, I just focus on every situation that’s coming up.”
That really should be the end of it.

Jeff-
I think people need to realize it is an opinion piece more than anything. Kudos to you for firing back. I came across some interesting figures earlier today about how well Georgia has done overall compared to the power houses of the west. I think the number show that we aren’t far behind in Stats on defense. I hope we show Grantham how much he is appreciated with atleast a 3 yr deal.
I might be hopping on a “way to soon” band wagon but with returning talent and the way freshman have played all year. UGA will definitely be a SECCG contender and NC hopeful.
The SEC record of the SEC teams UGA has played = 16-32
The SEC record of the SEC teams Bama has played = 17-31
The SEC record of the SEC teams LSU has played = 15-25
after Ole Miss next week = 15-31
Maybe the overall schedule was a little harder but for the SEC it hasn’t been much differnt.

UGA won 8 straight games against 6 weak teams (with losing records) and watered down (rebuilding) Auburn & Fla. teams. So the fact of the matter is the only way to find out if Richt has the team better is to see the results of the Ga. Tech,SEC Championship, and (whichever) Bowl games ! Beating Ole Pizz,Missy St.,Vandy, and New Mex. St. doesn’t prove ANYTHING.

Well stated WD…coaches like Mr. Grantham are always looking for “the next job”…unless they have a family or alumni attachment to that program…and since coach Grantham is not a georgia alumni and is probably not comfortable living amongst a bunch of mouth breathing georgia fans, he’s probably going to move on…you people think he’s going to hang around and carry CMR for the next three-four years?? really??? unfortunately, most of you dawgs think he’s reached coaching nirvana in Athens…well, he hasn’t….

@5150 UOAD – that’s not what I’m talking about. This whole thing started because Grantham’s agent contacted Chip Towers. He may not have run that by Grantham specifically. For all we know, he may have just told Grantham he would start working on the issue. The whole reason clients come to agents is because they are better at the negotiations. They know the tricks of the trade. Grantham has stated he is letting his agent handle it. I seriously doubt Grantham is telling his agent step by step how to go about his job. In this case, I doubt he told his agent to contact Chip Towers at AJC. We have no idea what sort of relationship they have. For all we know, Grantham just told him to do what he thinks is right, and leave him to concentrate on football.

I like CTG. I think he is a players coach and I dont feel like his incidents on the field at Vandy and Fla warrant the criticism that the local media has given him for it. I think he has fire in the belly for winning and the players attitudes follow this lead. We have all felt a little sideline fire was needed from our staff. CTG gives us what we do not have we from the rest of the UGA staff. I say its good.
Of course this is the political stuff that started Jim Donnan’s path towards the door.
I have had this feeling that CMR and GM have given TG a bit of a slap on the wrist for these incidences and dont feel that TG feels like he needs to put up with this… Wouldnt be suprised if he were considering moving on if the opportunity presents itself.
Now IF TG or Agent with TG’s approval initiated the contract extension press at this point in the season, I do think this is wrong. I just dont want to believe that this is the case though.
We are preaching to the kids to stay focused on the task and DO YOUR JOB. I think the coaches need to display this same focus for the next two months. As GM has said from the start of the season, evaluation and future contracts will be discussed after the season.

Aren’t the combined SEC records of their opponents pretty lousy too? I know it’s not AS bad (I think Bama’s is 13-31), but still, the bottom line is that FL, Auburn and Tenn stink this year. You have to admit that from the reader’s viewpoint (prior to Chip’s info on the agent seeking him out) it appeared that this was all contrived by the AJC. Chip tosses it and Jeff knocks it out of the park. Seemed to be awfully coincidental.
I guess my question is did Chip get any compensation (read: $$$) for doing the agent’s and Grantham’s PR for them? Obviously, the article he wrote was exactly what the agent wanted to happen. Interesting that Chip would oblige. When I initially read Chip’s article, I assumed that his article was born out of his honest curiosity of Grantham’s contractual situation given the overwhelming success he has had this year. I guess I need to read articles from the AJC with a little more skepticism from now on.

I know no one at all cares about the north avenue trade school but this is ridiculous. CPJ has his entire team acting like thugs. They try to punch out other players, they engage in some of the dirtiest cheap shots in college football and manage several dozen illegal blocks mixed in with their borderline legal blocks every game. What is most pathetic is the bugs still can’t win,
Somehow though this cretin and his coaching of career ending dirty football is not worthy of even being mentioned. No the ajc and it’s staff of moronic hacks would rather write about a UGA coach ’s agent wanting a contract extension.
It is no big surprise though. When you consider the cheating and lieing that has gone on at the trade school in the hood since cpj has been there it should make even the lowliest murderer sick. However north avenue’s acc championship being stripped barely even rated a mention in the ajc. Despite the trade school being investigated for a lengthy period of time before being punished and sanctioned, the ajc and their intrepid investigators felt like the story didn’t deserve any coverage.

The north avenue trade school having a lengthy investigation that uncovered a litany of cheating and lies that resulted in one of their only championships being stripped barely got a mention by the intrepid staff at the ajc.
The north avenue trade school and it’s coach paul johnson run the dirties program in college football. Players are coached to mis illegal blocks in with borderlind legal blocks and the players throw late hits and punchs at will during every gane. Somehow none of this garners a mention from the ajc slack jawed morons.
An agent wanting to extend his clients contract though. That is stop the presses front page news.

As a graduate in Journalism from UGA, I have enjoyed how Shultz and Chip have handled this story in their two articles.
Two points I would like to make:
1) I was one of the UGA fans calling for CMR’s head after the SC game and I now recognize that position was premature;
2) I agree with Jeff Schultz that Grantham needs to focus on coaching for the time being. The jury is out for me over Todd Grantham despite the play of his defense. There are some behavior issues going on there. It intrigues me as to how calm CMR is despite the fact that he likes to surround himself with rather spirited assistants (Van Gorder/CTG). I think these coaches need to find a happy middle-ground between spirit and focus.

Brilliant work by his agent, nd he’s telling the truth.

This is a very bitter and vindictive column. Grantham must have given Schultz a wedgie and stuffed him in his locker at some point. In all seriousness, I read the story about Grantham’s contract and not once did I think “what in the hell is he doing? He needs to concentrate on coaching!!!” I just thought it was a perfectly innocuous story about the business of college football, but somehow Schultz turns it in to an indictment of Todd Grantham and everything the man stands for. Its almost as if he used it as an excuse to post that YouTube clip again.
Good grief Schultz needs help.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Why? Mark Richt would be discussing with Kathryn about their mission destination for 2012 right now if not for Grantham.
If Mark Richt lets Todd Grantham get away, this would be his second, idiotic move of letting a proven, excellent (not just good, Jeff) DC leave for lack of salary.
Would any Dawg fan trade him for the 1st three guys that got offered the job a couple of years ago?
Maybe for Chavis, maybe not. Grantham has had 1 recruiting class to pick the players he needs for his defense. He has brought UGA’s defense from laughable (40th) to nearly the best in the country in less than 2 seasons.

Personally, nothing you write offends me unless you ever choose to mock coach Richt’s faith. There are many like me that embrace the Biblical principals that coach Richt exemplifies. Some on these AJC blogs, however, like to reference coach Richt as “da preacher” as though that was a disparaging remark. I am thankful for a coach that impacts his players with life lessons that will follow them long after their football experience at UGA. Here’s hoping that “da preacher” keeps on preaching (and beating the Gators)!

Hey “Moron,” sorry to tell you but I actually have a birth certificate stamped with the Seal of the great State of Georgia on it… I outgrew pulling for people in high school, college, or pro sports a long time ago… I appreciate athletic endeavors and even spend my money witnessing it… But here is the difference, I don’t put them on a pedestal nor do I expect for them or the people who are hired to oach them to be anything but a temporary diversion in one’s day… You’re just dew drop in time… Todd Grantham is not the first defensive coordinator in Athens… The silliness that goes on in here between Tech and UGA fans or Bama and Auburn fans has gotten out of hand… A fool literally tried poisoning a living thing in order to be a college sports fan… You are no better than a fool who dresses up and lives life in awe of a Potter or Hobbitt book… You fools just do it on a Saturday and then obsess over it the other 39 weeks of the year!

Yes defense has improved but in reality it improved against teams it should improve upon and really with no complex defensive blueprint to do it with. He needs a signature win shutting down a high powered offense such as Arkansas or Oklahoma State, once he accomplishes that he will have negotiating leverage. His reputation as a rogue coordinator will keep him from going back to the NFL.

Pay him. He has earned it. UGA can’t afford not to pay CTG. He has done a spectacular job with the defense and once a head coach is signed, then extend CTG’s contract. This is college, but if Auburn can afford to pay Malzahn over 1mill. as a OC, UGA can afford to pay the DC better and also find a better OC at the same time. Yea, UGA has scored some points and they actually played a complete game against Aub. but, did Bobo actually call the plays Sat. or did CMR call the plays.

You won’t ever hear them admit it but due to the fact that CTG has had no disicplinary measures taken against him he has been exonerated COMPLETELY!!!!!!!!!! This was just a followup on CTG’s “choke” sign at Florida last year. which wasn’t a huge deal either. CTG needs to be compensated well after the season is over so long as we don’t embarrass ourselves in any of the rest odf our games. You should be ashamed. Perhaps you should be fired. Funny how you never write about this incident. At least Grantham can coach well. You say your guessing? I thought reporters were suppose to report facts!
So now you have everyone think that CTG sent his agent out to get him a raise in the media but you just admitted you made it up? And you don’t believe his agent about the coaching offers? Why, did you ever catch him in a lie? I have to wonder about your agenda with CTG since you were so ready to get him in trouble when he went thru the incident with the vandy coach earlier. Just don’t understand why you have it out for him when you admit you don’t have any evidence.

“Grantham stated he wants an extension only b/c you meat-heads in the media first starting talking about his current contract. ”
Pray that this doesn’t leak to the folks at Ohio State. Also, Arizona was turned down by Meyer. SEC offensive coordinator may be leader for North Carolina job; how about a DC for that job? Bowden and now Mason deny interest in the University of New Mexico job. Ron Zook is in trouble at Illinois after a great start to the season. Rich Rod is the frontrunner at Tulane, but not the only option (big $50 million facility upgrade there).
Does anyone in the NFL see Grantham as HC potential? I think they would like to see DC one more time.

I love Grantham and the Dawgs but I have to say I was thinking the same thing about the agent embellishing the facts to stir up pro-Grantham sentiment in the fan base (McGarity is wise to those tactics, of course). The move seems to have worked just fine, though. And I agree that it wasn’t necessary because Grantham has proven his worth on the field. And I’m completely in favor of the extension and a raise over his already fat contract. Let’s keep the guy as long as we can.

As far as Grantham taking up for his players at Vandy, 1 out of 10,000 fans would probably have a problem with Grantham’s handling of this incident, the other 9999 would more than likely approve. I know I sure approved of the way he handled it.

At any rate, here are Real UGA Sports Stories:
Jones is leading the race for SEC Defensive Player of the Year.
Murray is currently 2nd for SEC Offensive Player of the Year.
Richt is currently likely 2nd for Coach of the Year.
(No Asst Coach Update – But I have a funny feeling – I know who’s in the running…. Sorry Schultz….)
Oh there is more REAL NEWS to write about…
#1 RB Recruit names his final six schools: “My finals schools are UGA, Clemson, Florida, Notre Dame, UNC, and South Carolina, in no particular order.” K. Marshall.
An article about how stellar the UGA Receivers have been all this year, with and without Freshman sensation Mitchell.
Ohh here’s a good one: LB J. Jones is listed as #23 in the uncoming NFL Draft (That might be bad news for us; but definitely good news for JJ)
Here here is a Really good one: An article about how dismal the LSU offense is and a bit about how the LSU defense can be beat.

It’s all a grand conspiracy. Jeff Schultz and his buddy Mark Bradley are in cahoots to blaspheme the Georgia Bulldogs. Jeff Schultz specifically is looking to totally discredit the always calm, cool, and collected Todd Grantham, who is so understated that, by comparison, Coach Mark Richt looks like a total heck-raiser.
People are going to get mad, Jeff, if you insist on forming an impartial opinion instead of saying wonderful things about the Bulldogs and their coaching deity. The Uga’s would just die, if they all hadn’t already done so.
If truth be known, all Grantham’s agent is trying to do is gain his client leverage for the one thing in life that his client wants more than anything else. That would be, of course, his own Ford truck commercial.

The form over substance obsession many have with the Dawgs is why Richt has been allowed to sleep walk through the last three seasons (previous to this year) and still retain employment at what should be one of the top football programs in the country year in and year out.
Grantham is just as important to UGA’s relative success this year as is their stud recruiting class, Florida’s sudden mediocrity and a schedule that spared them Alabama, LSU and Arkansas.
In fact, I’ll argue that each is a far more important component to UGA’s competitive resurgence in 2011 than any voodoo CMR worked on the sideline or in the locker room.
If Dawg Nation’s country club contingent cringes when Grantham gives the choke sign to the UF kicker or goes WWF on Vandy’s coach in a post game confrontation, big deal. The guy’s got heart. CMR’s got gentility oozing out his every pore. What advantage does that buy UGA on Fall Saturday afternoons?
In the eyes of many I guess it’s just so plebian for Grantham to consider filthy lucre at a time like this.
Get over it. If UGA expects the good times to park in Athens for an extended stay, they better join CMR and Grantham and the hip (contractually speaking).
Look at the record – what are CMR’s Bulldogs without a good Defensive Coordinator? They’re Kentucky, that’s what they are.
Richt (and Dawg Nation) need Grantham more than Grantham needs them.

D coordinators like him are a dime a dozen. UGA could go pick a DC from ANY conference in the country and pay him like Grantham and they could do as good or equal of a job. Hell, UGA could pay them a FRACTION of what he makes and get the same results; the guy is the 3rd highest paid DC in the land. Other top 10, top 15 DC’s are making less.
To me this is strike 3. Dude’s basically a mercenary, and he couldn’t get it done in the NFL, so the first sniff of success in NCAA he’s bitching about money. Take a hike CTG.

Who cares how much money Grantham makes – or aspires to make? You claiming poverty for UGA?
Speaking of three strikes, seems CMR’s been granted more than his fair share of mulligans by Dawg Nation the last three or four years. The guy’s been collecting multi-million dollar paychecks for years while the program he honchos circled the toilet bowl.
It took CMR three years to find Grantham (after Van Gorder had the nerve to bolt Athens for a raise in pay). Even if DC’s are a dime a dozen as you claim, they seem to evade Richt’s notice – until Grantham.
Pay him. If UGA could afford to keep CMR on the payroll – based on his paltry return on investment, they can sure keep a guy who’s proven a productive employee.

Todd needs to show a little class and handle the contract and pay once the SECCG is over. He will get an offer from UGA because those in the know understand they need him to get better as well as supply some much needed discipline not provided by Richt. The NFL doesn’t hire coaches during the season so his agent needs to STFU and stop making a fool out of himseld and Todd. Once you lose your credibility then life is a piece of cake! Oh Schultz….stirring trouble where none exists. Chip talked to TG’s agent and wrote what his agent said (this after his conversation with the AD in which he stated that coaching contract decisions will be made after the season). He followed up the next day with Grantham and he basically said that his focus is on coaching and getting ready for Kentucky. He also said that is why he hired an agent to handle those things so he doesn’t have to worry or focus on it. It is what it is and why don’t you actually take Grantham’s word for it instead of writing this hit piece. You scream there is no bias against the University of Georgia, yet you write this drivel when the team is on the cusp of winning the SEC East after an improbable run and no one else outside of the AJC is even making the coaches contracts an issue. Not ESPN, other UGA beat writers, or even the Athens newspapers are talking about this. Seriously, find another subject on UGA that might warrant the venom or go look at the other school in town and see how their team is doing (hey didn’t one of their players decide to do what poor Kwame Geathers got suspended for and ridiculed by this very paper? Didn’t see many negative stories about that one).

CTG has proved beyond a doubt that he can rebuild a D squad from the ashes in the SEC basement in two years. Frankly, he deserves far more $ and we ALUMNI are all for that. He will get a very, very substantial increase as the highest paid D coach in the land and we UGA grads are more than happy to reach in to our golf slacks and hand it over.

Agreed this is something that is hardly publicly done by coaches at the NFL level and should never be public fodder at the college level.
His agent sounds like a Las Vegas con man.
You don’t hear public negotiating with Kirby Smart or other top assistants by their agents. You typically start hearing about assistants and their contracts when they start interviewing for head coaching positions.
This is not the case with Coach Grantham.
Maybe his agent still thinks he’s in the NFL, and if he were I would imagine a conversation with Roger Goodell in order. Maybe Mike Slive along with Adams and McGarrity Five-0 can shut his agent up.
