Oddsmaker: Georgia would be 10.5-point underdogs to LSU

Les Miles.

Les Miles' team is ranked No. 1 by the BCS.

Mark Richt.

Mark Richt's Dogs have won eight straight.

As Georgia fans begin to allow themselves to dream the impossible dream — beating LSU in the SEC championship game — here’s a clue about how big of an underdog the Bulldogs would be that week.

Todd Fuhrman, the senior race and sports analyst for Caesars Entertainment in Las Vegas, said Monday that he projects LSU to be a 10½-point favorite over Georgia at the SEC title game at the Georgia Dome on Dec. 3. That assumes the Dogs win their final two games against Kentucky (which would clinch the SEC East) and Georgia Tech (road), and LSU defeats Mississippi (road) and Arkansas (home).

Fuhrman, reached by phone on Monday, said the point spread will be about 10½ “unless something unexpected happens, like LSU struggles against Arkansas. The [SEC title] game is going to be played in the Georgia Dome, but in championship games there’s not a real home field advantage.”

Georgia fans might perceive the projected line as a lack of respect for a team that will have won 10 straight. But Fuhrman said, “A couple of weeks ago I think most of us would’ve said LSU would be close to a two-touchdown favorite. But their offense has struggled some the last couple of weeks and Georgia’s defense is playing well, especially against the run, like they showed in the Auburn game. If LSU can’t run, they’re going to have problems.”

Fuhrman also said that the play of quarterback Aaron Murray and the receivers around him give Georgia “a puncher’s chance” in that game.

The projected 10½-point spread seems right to me. Do you agree, or is Georgia being short-changed?

I disagree that the Dome is not an advantage for UGA, but it obviously did not help against Boise. UGA’s defense is going to give the Tigers all sorts of problems. The key to the game is Murray – can he be protected enough to get the ball to the receivers which will open the run game? This did not happen against Boise, but the defense has come a long way since then.

I am wanting UGA to beat Kentucky and GT. Then if they play up to their ability, UGA can play with anyone. As bad as their kicking is, UGA is still better than Alabama. UGA has more playmakers on offense than LSU of Bamer.

Schultz, let UGA fans enjoy their victory. Surely there is more to talk about than a game in 3 weeks.

No matter, what the odds, I will like UGA. No matter, what the odds, some will always pull (and write) against UGA.

Stranger things have happened! If and I say If UGA can improve over the next two weeks they will have good chance against LSU. Remember this is the SEC and the top tier programs all recruit extremely well and UGA has some major talent (like they do every year) that with the right game plan and coaching can play with any team in the nation.

I’m just excited that we are in a position to win the SEC East. Least we forget that 2 months ago things looked pretty bad. I’ll take the 10.5 point underdawg to LSU all day. The point spread does not necessarily represent how much better one team is than another, but how many points will it take to get the same number of bettors for each team. LSU has been at or near the top of the polls all year so obviously it would take a lot of points to convince bettors to take a chance on Georgia. That being said, I wasn’t impressed with LSU in the Alabama game. The tide pretty much gave the game to LSU. The tigers have no leadership or consistency at quarterback whereas Georgia’s has been getting better and more consistent each game. I will gladly take the 10.5 points and despite the raucous laughter from the rest of the guys at work, I think our Dawgs can take it. No really, I am not crazy. Dawgs can (will) win!

If UGA dominates against Kentucky and GTech, they would probably narrow the line to single digits, but an undefeated LSU would deserve a healthy line in their favor on account of their season’s resume. Still, the Dawgs looked good enough against Auburn to be a threat to any team in the nation. I think they would have more than a puncher’s chance. If UGA’s special teams and Aaron Murray are on their A game, they will be a handful. I have no doubt that LSU, Bama, or Arkansas coaches would approach UGA as an equal.

The one thing the UGAs defense does well enough to win them the Tech game and the SEC championship is set the edge on running plays. One of the best I’ve seen at forcing runs back inside. History has shown that if UGA could stuff the run against LSU, Lee and Jefferson are prone to make mistakes down field, where UGA has defensive backs with exceptional ball skills.

Given that Georgia keeps up its good work, we should easily roll by UK (we’re a 28.5 favorite last time I saw) and GT (they really struggle against defenses ranked better than 50th in the country). The Georgia Dome is in no way home turf for the Dawgs – LSU will have just as many fans present. It’s really going to boil down to how well each of these teams finish the season. I do think that if things continue the way they are now, that Georgia could enter that game as a 7 point underdog.

If we lose to UK or GT none of this discussion will matter. A few observations: Auburn was the first game all season that we had our key talent available (minus our O line injuries). Mitchell was back and he adds a nice threat dimension. Also, UGA is a very young team. In fact, I can’t remember a time when so many of our key players were freshmen. Young teams can be a liability, particularly early on, but they can also improve rapidly with experience and confidence. Injuries or discipline problems on any of the teams could change the picture a lot, so let’s not get ahead of ourselves by discussing LSU. Both of the next two games have a lot riding on them (SEC and state championship), so I don’t think we need to worry about the players looking ahead. Go Dawgs.

SC lost to Auburn, Gman, and so did the Gators….'nuff said. If Auburn is as bad as you and others say, how did they manage to whip SC with Lattimore? 10 1/2 point edge to LSU is just about right to motivate the Dawgs but to be quite honest the Dawgs should have the 10 1/2 point edge. LSU’s offense will have a hard time scoring against the Dawgs defense. Georgia will be the most complete team that LSU will face this year. Georgia has a defense comparible to Alabama’s and an offense comparable to Oregon. The question is whether or not the SEC and it’s officiating crew would allow a two loss Georgia team to upset an undefeated LSU team that would in effect spoil the SEC sending another team to the National Championship game. We all remember the bad celebration penalty against AJ green a couple of years ago when Georgia almost ruined things for LSU. Georgia 27 LSU 10!!!

Well we do not expect to be even with the #1 team in the country Schultz. Got to go find the negative perspective again dont you? But you know what? We CAN dream because we will be playing IN the game! How do you like that Schultz? Burns you up doesnt it?! LOL!

You know why else we can dream BIG? UGA defense will keep us in any game baby!

You know who cannot dream though? GT! They might get shutout when they meet the UGA defense! Run killers they are! When Tech faces a decent defense, the offense is basically stymied.

I assure you of this: think VT defense but MUCH better. Think Virginia defense byt MUCH better, This is NOT a Clemson Tiger defense LOL. This is one of the BEST defenses in the country AND it is HEALTHY for once AND ONLY GETTING BETTER AND IT EATS RUNNING BACKS FOR LUNCH! By the way UGA and GT will kickoff at…..LUNCH TIME BABY!

Schultz no matter how many NEGATIVE views you can find to write about in positive UGA happenings….YOU CANNOT TAKE ANYTHING AWAY FROM US OR KNOCK US DOWN OR TAKE AWAY OUR JOY OR BEAT US! We ARE ON THE WAY UP! And I know that it kills you but it is true. And it is only going to get worse for you the next few years! We might lose to LSU and odds say we will and if we do that is OK! We got there inspite of all the negativity and pressure from you and Bradley! Fire Richt LOL! How many articles did you write pointing out his stellar record as a first time head coach and emphasizing the facts surrounding the last 2 seasons? That it was understandable? LOL you probably hate them so bad you couldnt bring yourself to do anything but put things like that in but as a footnote! Richt is not going anywhere Schultz. UGA will rule the state of Georgia and each will have one great season every 20 years, maybe 2. As long as Richt is at UGA, we will ALWAYS PERSEVERE, WEATHER THE STORM, TO YOUR DISMAY, AND MORE YEARS THAN NOT WILL BE SERIOUS CONTENDERS FOR THE SEC EAST AND MAKE A FEW SEC TITLE GAMES AND WIN SOME OF THEM. You keep looking for the negative angle to put a damper on UGA and its fans no matter how well the team has done in the face of adverstiy, A new AD a new DC anddefensive scheme, players leaving early for the NFL, an injury descimated OL, defections, etc. Joe Cox, Freshman QB, young players, undeserved media pressure to hurt UGA recruiting and psyche and moral. I know , no excuses for UGA, no slack for UGA, no love for UGA, KICK THEM WHEN THEY ARE DOWN! YOU DID BROTHER! BRADLEY DID TOO BUT WE TOOK YOUR BEST PUNCHES AND WE ARE STILL STANDING AND GOING TO THE SEC CHAMPIONSHIP! HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA !

Slobber , no teams are allowed to play for the BCS championship unless they are their conference champions. That’s according to the 2007 season results when UGA was ranked 4th during championship week and the top 2 teams loss. UGA Dropped to 7th. If Oklahoma beats Ok ST and UGA beats LSU look for Oregon to play Oklahoma.

Columbus , GT will expose our defence’s weakness , our corners ability to tackle. They will come up every 4th or 5th play but will not tackle as they should the entire game. Hopefully GT runs the B back most of the game.

The line really has nothing to do with who Vegas THINKS will win the game. It’s based on national perception. Vegas’ goal is to get 50% of all money on each team and let the casinos win the juice (a commission paid to book makers on losing bets). The line grows or shrinks when too much money is being bet on one team. So LSU, with the #1 ranking will be the perceived favorite by 10.5. Seems about right to me. I think the dawgs will certainly give LSU all they can handle and possibly win based on their recent play.

But I don’t think LSU beating ARK is a given and as far as LSU beating AL – all you have to do is shut down AL run and you can beat them and GA can shut down the run – I for one would rather play LSU or AL than ARK for the SEC title -

National perception aside, based on recent performances, I think LSU will struggle to even score 11 pts. UGA may not get 11 pts either, but I see no reason why LSU will move the ball with any consistency on UGA.

The wildcard will be special teams…the Dawgs cannot let those ugly special teams errors pop up like they did against UF and at other times this season. Walsh will be asked to hit some long FGs and he will be absolutely critical if the Dawgs are going to have a chance.

Anyway, I’m not convinced LSU will beat Arkansas…and if the game was in Fayetteville, I’d definitely be calling for an upset.

It’s not a BCS rule but an ESPN rule or at least it was in 2007. ESPN dictates who plays in the national championship and right now they are wanting LSU/Bama rematch. IF Georgia should beat LSU then ESPN will ensure their pull will put Bama in against OK St or Stanford depending on the outcomes of their Championship games.

Look at the two teams that UGA and LSU played within two weeks of each other. LSU beat Miss St 19-6, UGA beat Miss St 24-10. The total yardage gained and given up by both were nearly identical. LSU beat Auburn 45-10. UGA 3 weeks later beat them 45-7. The yardage given up by both teams were nearly the same but, UGA put over 500 yards on Auburn where LSU put a little over 390 yards on Auburn. Also, UGA gave up less rushing yards to Auburn than LSU did. I think the teams are more evenly matched than people think. UGA will give LSU more problems than Alabama because UGA’s passing game is better than Alabama’s which make UGA more balanced.

I’ll take a great big bucket full of that action. My justification is simple; there ain’t no way LSU beats this Georgia team that badly.

LSU isn’t strong enough offensively, period. Their running game is due it’s proper respect, but it isn’t a juggernaut by any stretch of the imagination and their passing game is no where good enough to beat us. And Jeffersons’ mobility is not going to scare us either.

Personally, I’d rather play the Tide. I want to face the best runner in the game and you have got to play the best if you want to become the best.

Plus, I hate Saban.

I don’t know who will win the SECCG but I guarantee you all that UGA is good enough to play with any of the contenders that we might face… the Tigers, the Razorbacks or the Tide.

Forget the 0-2 and just look at the performance. There is more raw talent and speed on that team than any team Ga has ever put on the field. Name one that was better. Neither LSU or Alabama has a scary offense, period. They play defense but so does Georgia, #4 in the US of A. Pretty good,, uh

Formula for Ga to go to bcs champ game is still in tact, imo. It’s a long shot but basically….if Ga wins sec east and then other than the big 12 champ….no other conf champs have less than 1 loss….then Ga would play the big 12 champ in the bcs champ game. Only fly in the ointment could be if a team in the sec west ends up with just 1 loss and did not lose to Georgia. Alabama for instance if LSU defeats Ark and wins the west.

Bottomline….we need PAc 12 south to beat pac 12 north. We need clemson and va tech to lose 1 more time. We need Alabama to get beat again. Ga must win sec.

After the UGA game against Auburn I think you can pretty much throw out the 10.5. Hate to see how much money those guys won for the house, when so many people bet against the spread. Odds makers do not measure the heart of the team, and UGA has plenty of heart. I realize that LSU has one hell of a defense, but their offense is 88th in the national ranking where it counts the most. If the Ol of UGA can protect the QB, UGA might be alb e to score a huge upset, but that is a big if. I am just delighted that UGA can wrap up the chance against Kentucky this week and get the honor of playing in the SEC championship. After Kentucky, we have our scrimmage game against Tech. and then we go to Atlanta. Win or lose I think these young DAWGS have done a great job.

Now we haven’t played Kentucky yet and we still need to play GT. But, my assessment of LSU is only based on the LSU-Alabama game, that was the only game I had time to see LSU play this year, I think LSU is going to move the ball on the ground but not like everyone thinks they can. They will get their yards but against good defenses they struggle and their passing game isn’t the best in the country. That point spread makes sense now, but let’s wait 2 more weeks and see what it is.

The pups played their starters most of the game while LSU pounded them and they they played without several starters and had the scrubs in for most of the 4th quarter. If they had played their starters as much as CMR had his on the field, LSU might have hung 60+ on Auburn. UGA hanging around this year with one nice win after another and after those UGLY two losses to SC and BS. Not bad. Leadership, tenacity, determination and courage and physical toughness kicked in for UGA. Coaches did their job, especially CTG. We need to LOCK CTG UP with some mega $$$. I also love Bell the receivers coach. Nice job with some newbies, man.

We do need to develop the mindset of Crowell and ………..and …………..SIGN TWO BIG TIME running backs for the future. Beyond that, we need to develop two kickers for the future. We desperately need to sign maybe 5 or 6 big boy wide bodies to develop for the O line and that D End from Harris County.

College ( UGA/SEC ball) is fun when your team is in the hunt. Our league is the league to compete in. The writers and the coaches know this to be true.

UGA needs to whup up on KY and GT and score at will and then, let the polls decide were we are. I expect two 49-16 jobs with these two clowns.

LSU picked by 10 over UGA? Bothers me not. We play top notch ball on that game day and I will be happy either way ………win or lose, because 2012 IS THE YEAR for UGA.

Wow!!! Why are the haters so passionate UGA will lose to LSU? Or about UGA period. It’s okay to hate but this is borderline obsession.JMac, McDonald or whatever. All I said was the Alabama-LSU game was the only game I seen LSU play and gave you what I thought about the game. That was it.. I did not make a prediction or anything. Yet you came at me with at this talk about signature wins. You people have such short memories. The east this year is down and everyone knows it. Now that the haters are all over my comments, I will say it’s going to take more than 3 field goals to win the SEC Championship game. LSU is one dimensional with shaky quarterback play from 2 quarterbacks. LSU’s defense will keep them in the game but I don’t think LSU will win. And I’m being objective.

If you want me to show my colors as a fan. UGA will slaughter LSU. UGA’s defense is I think better than Alabama. LSU will be lucky to score 14 points. UGA’s quarterback knows what he’s doing and he will pick LSU apart. Now if you going to hate, hate on everything in this paragraph. Don’t get so hostile over an honest assessment over one game I seen.

Oh and to answer your question. Who cares about signature wins. Last I checked,. a win is a win no matter who it’s against. The same teams UGA lost to last year Tennessee, Florida, and Auburn they beat this year and they all off a sudden are not signature wins? That’s the pot calling the kettle black. Just because those same teams are having a not so good year this doesn’t make those wins any less than they would have been last year.

So to make myself perfectly clear. A win is a win no matter who it’s against. There’s your answer.

When Georgia was 0-2, who would have believed we’d be playing the #1 ranked team in the SEC championship and ONLY be 10 pt underdawgs? Things are definitely looking up!

Not sure where your stats came from but let’s compare Team stats, the real stats..
Passing Offense————-LSU..97th
Bama…69th
Ga…..42th
Rushing offense————LSU…29th
Bama…18th
Ga…….32nd
Passing Defense———–LSU….5th
Bama…6th
Ga…….15th
Rushing Defense———–LSU….3rd
Bama….1st
Ga……..5th
Overall———————–Offense Defense
LSU…77th 2nd
Bama…34th 1st
Ga……31st 4th
If you throw SOS in the mixture, LSU—-1st
Bama—17th
Ga……38th
Now, there you go. The best team is LSU

basscat2 Not saying that LSU statistically on defense is not higher ranked than GA. Just saying that if you look at offensive statistics and defensive statistics teams are much closer than some people seem to think. Don’t think that LSU would blow out GA as most LSU fans and commentators seem to think. Would probably be a game that turned based on turnovers and special teams play.

Call me crazy, but I believe Georgia will beat LSU or Arkansas or Alabama.Reason number 1 is that they believe in themselves and the coaching staff.Reason 2 is that LSU or Bama really don’t have and Offense that scares anyone, maybe Arkansas.Reason 3 and that is they have finally got beyond the “fire CMR” hype to where now they can ball Ga. ball w/o any outside distractions.Reason 4 Grantham has the defense fully charged meaning they understands their role in the 3-4. What all this sums up is that the Dawgs will win by 10 and Les will be eating more fescue and CMR will be coach of the year.
