Potential first: Georgia and Tech both playing for titles

Mark Richt and Paul Johnson have their teams in posiition for title shots.

Mark Richt and Paul Johnson have their teams in position for title shots. (Brant Sanderlin/AJC)

This didn’t seem possible when Georgia opened the season with losses to Boise State and South Carolina and Georgia Tech followed a 6-0 start with losses to Virginia and Miami: But both schools can all but assure themselves of a ticket to their respective conference championship game this week.

The Bulldogs and Jackets never have played for conference championships in the same season since the SEC (1992) and ACC (2005) split off into divisions, nor have they ever won conference titles in the same season.

Here’s the backdrop:

Georgia (5-1 in SEC plays) holds a half-game lead over South Carolina (5-2) in the SEC East and is a whopping 12½-point favorite over Auburn Saturday in Athens. If the Dogs win, they need to only beat Kentucky at home the following week to clinch the East. The Gamecocks’ final conference game is against Florida, which was Georgia’s last SEC victim. They hold a tiebreaker edge should the Dogs lose one of their two conference games.

Georgia Tech’s route is a little more difficult. The Yellow Jackets (4-2) trail Virginia Tech (4-1) by a half-game. But they play host to the No. 10 Hokies Thursday night. Most lines have Virginia Tech as a one-point favorite. Georgia Tech’s only other remaining ACC game is at Duke.

(UPDATE: Just to cover all bases: Virginia technically holds a tiebreaker over Georgia Tech. But the Cavaliers would need to sweep their remaining three games against Duke, Florida State on the road and Virginia Tech to win the Coastal.)

The Jackets are coming off an upset of then-No. 5 Clemson. Can they do it again?

Tech has been to the ACC championship game twice since the conference split into divisions in 2005: It lost the title game to Wake Forest in 2006 and defeated Clemson in 2009 (official records now show that championship as vacated by the NCAA, pending appeal).

Georgia has played in three SEC championship games: The Dogs defeated Arkansas in 20o2 and LSU in 2005, and lost to LSU in 2003.

In no year have the two schools won a football conference championship in the same season (both were in the SEC until Tech became an Independent in 1963 and later joined the  ACC).

So what are the chances both pull it off this week?

And then what would the chances be that both win championships? The likely opponents in the conference title games would be LSU for Georgia and Clemson for Georgia Tech.

Or should we just go one step at a time?

AUs only losses are to top 10 teams. UGA, not so much. Also, for AU to be 6-3 is pretty awesome since most of the so-called experts had them only winning 4 games all season.

Significant hurdles ahead for both UGA and GT this week. But if we both win out, expect this game on ABC with a significant national audience. Should be fun.

Our run defense is significantly improved from a year ago, both up the middle and holding the edge. That should give us the advantage over both Auburn and Tech. But since we’re prone to special teams breakdowns and bad turnovers, both games will probably come down to the wire.

The puppies have a little easier time than the jackets but not to much. Remember the war ducks beat the gators as well so that is not that big of a deal and the east really stinks against the west.

Jeff,

I agree about Auburn. I think that team is going to be trouble in the future, they are just very young. I saw first-hand at the Florida-Auburn game the enormous amount of young talent on Auburn’s roster. Whether Auburn fans like Chizik or not, I believe he has the program heading in the right direction.

Actually UGA shouldn’t even be in this position. They should have already clinched a tie but they handed USC the win. That was a joke of a win for USC that shouldn’t have ever occured. But after everyone wanted CMR fired after that game, it would be something if UGA won out and went 10-2 with a birth in the SEC Championship game. And after seeing LSU’s offense on Saturday the Dawgs may even have a chance. Otherwise a trip to the Capital One or Cotton wouldn’t be that bad.

I’d say take things one step at a time, Jeff.

However, if we get to this situation, I’d say that both teams will have their minds elsewhere, to a certain extent. Not to say the game won’t matter, but in terms of what each team’s goals are (winning their respective conferences), it doesn’t.

But still, bragging rights are always on the line, and the Dawgs should make it three in a row. But first things first: beat Auburn!

And for curiosity’s sake, where did you get that line on the Auburn game?

You just don’t know with this team. Out of the big games we have played this year, we have only won one. That was Florida and they were terrible. Boise killed us. We got out coached and played in that game. And we all know about the SC game. Our record in a must win games lately has not been good in the past 3 years. Hopefully, we will find some character in this game and find a way to win. They did show some heart in the Florida game though. We need some more of that without all the mistakes. Go Dawgs!

With all due respect to oddsmakers and Jeff Schultz, I think Auburn is just as formidable an opponent for Georgia as VT is for GT. Go look at VT’s schedule and try not to laugh at the wins they have. Beating Miami in Blacksburg by 3 points is the signature win for them. Yet they carry a top ten ranking. I just don’t see it. Last time VT came to Atlanta with the Coastal on the line it was the same scenario. GT wins.

I think Georgia wins too, but I think Auburn will present a challenge.

We may not have beaten any ranked teams, but we did beat Tennessee and Florida in the same year and we are back on the ESPN scroll as a relevant ranked team. And we did win 7 in a row. And Mark Richt has always won 10 games with a returning QB. And Aaron Marrey just threw for 5 TD’s in 9 minutes while Tech has maybe 10 TD passes for TD’s all year.

6 of last 7 if we beat Auburn.

21 of last 26 if we beat UK.

18 of last 21 if we beat Tech.

VT always looks good until they play GT. Beamer and Butthead(the defensive coach) have never figured out how to stop the Tech offense. As much as I hate to say it, I think GT wins this one.

Auburn is Auburn, and they always play lights out in Sanford Stadium. I think the Georgia defense will be up to the task, after the first quarter. Malzahn has had two weeks to prepare for this game and will hit the Dawgs with every trick play he has ever dreamed of. But Grantham will adjust and handle the Plainsmen/Tigers/War Eagles in the second half.

However, Murray in a big game is a train wreck. Auburn will be like USC if they get an early turnover and will kill Murray. Murray gave the Gamecocks 21 points. If he gives AU 7, we lose.

It will be some great football this week. I lot riding for both teams. VT has late hit our QB’s over the years and I don’t like it when no Flag is thrown, but hearing 1 SEC team calling any other SEC team Dirty or a Cheater is too damn funny. It is like 1 midget calling another midget short. It maybe true but 1 ain’t but an Inch taller.

Auburn has beaten both South Carolina and Florida and folks are burying them now after blowout losses to Arkansas and LSU.”

AUs only losses are to top 10 teams. UGA, not so much. Also, for AU to be 6-3 is pretty awesome since most of the so-called experts had them only winning 4 games all season.

hey 2010 champs last time I checked boise state was ranked number 5 when UGA played them and USC were ranked 15. You cannot help who you play. That is the way it played out. the only thing that I have to say is that you guys have 3 losses and when you went up against LSU and Arkansas you were blown out. Our only blowout loss of the year was to Boise St. I admit I do not think that we are ready for the Natl title game but I will say that we are better than your team and we can win without hesitation or and argument

5150 UAOD, I would agree with the dropping of FCS games however there would be plenty of FCS schools out there that would have to drop their sports programs. A lot of those schools rely on the big game money that they get paid. Plus our programs do need the breaks these games offer throughout the year.

For those of you discounting Georgia Tech’s defense, remember this squad held the explosive Clemson offense to a mere 17 points. And just because the defense might lack the talent to stay with the dawgs for a full 30 minutes, doesn’t mean they can’t hang or at least hold on for 25. The biggest defense for Georgia Tech against Clemson was it’s offense. We had the ball for 39 minutes, which disallows the opposing offense to get in any sort of rhythm. I’m convinced if Clemson can only put up 17 in 21 minutes, Georgia can’t even put up half that. And for the record, I’m not convinced Georgia can stop Tech either.

My Prediction:

Georgia beats Auburn and Kentucky to clinch the SEC East. To celebrate, everyone parties at Crowell’s crib. Trying to figure out which Tech back has the ball is hard enough when you’re sober, but when you’re still high from last weekend’s party…

Tech bounces back from an embarassing loss to Duke with a win over UGA.

Clean and sober after the loss to Ga Tech, the Dawgs upset LSU in the SEC Championship game.

Tech declares themselves SEC Champions since they beat Georgia and Georgia beat LSU, who beat Alabama…

BCS voters, especially the computer pollsters, buy into the Ga Tech logic and rank Ga Tech #2 in the final poll, right behind the only undefeated team in the country – Houston.

The BCS National title game is played before a crowd of 12 people. Three days and 52 overtimes later, the NCAA decides that neither team will ever stop the other from scoring and declares the game a tie.

The coaches vote Alabama #1 in the final poll, but the AP writers surprise no one when they rank Ohio State at the top of their poll. The computers can’t agree on which team is #1, with LSU, Alabama, Oklahoma, Stanford, Arkansas, and Duke finishing at the top of various computer polls..

A Georgia Tech grad student builds a robot from pieces of an old Atari system, crunches the numbers, and discovers that Ga Tech gained more rushing yards than any team that was voted #1 in any of the polls.

Thus, Ga Tech declares themselves National Champions.

I think the Georgia defense will get their pound of flesh and make the Auburn QB see double after the zebra-ignored mugging that dirtbag Fairley and the Tigers gave Aaron Murray in Auburn last season. Now that it is back in Athens, I expect payback in the form of blitzes from every defensive position raining down on their QB and with very bad intentions. Auburn, prepare your backup QBs, you will need them.

20th-ranked Auburn lost to 9th-ranked Clemson, who lost to 21st-ranked Ga. Tech. I’m not sure what that tells me.

If VT beats Ga. Tech and the Jackets fall from the ranking, does that mean Georgia Tech shouldn’t have been ranked?

How about that win by I forget who over 4th-ranked Texas, who then dropped out of the Top 25 for a few weeks? Surely that no longer counts as beating a Top 10 team.

Southern Miss is currently ranked above former Top 10 beauty Michigan. Other former Top Ten Big Ten teams Wisconsin and Mich. State seem to be settling toward a lump along with Nebraska in the bottom of the Top 25, if even that high by the end of the season. Cincinnati got pummeled by Tennessee and by the press now is in the Top 25.

I have to say I agree with you in regards to the Florida-Auburn game about the refs penalizing both for “failure to resemble football teams.” That was sorry football. The difference is, Auburn is a young team that is promising. I can’t say the same for my Gators. I believe Auburn will be tough to beat in future seasons.

The reason I said in an earlier comment about how you better not bet on Auburn-Georgia is because I remember back in 1999 when Georgia was supposed to roll over Auburn with a superior team only to watch former Hart County star and Auburn quarterback Ben Leard light up Georgia. That game was over by halftime.

Yes the east is down, but all 4 of the east power houses are very young teams and will be back to form by 2013. Then the SEC will once again dominate the top 10 with 5-6 teams in the top 10-15.

VT will be a challenge for GT, but I give them a decent shot to pull it off. Perhaps 40%. UGA-Auburn is going to be a good game– I give Georgia a slight edge– 55%– but that point-spread is crazy! I wish I were in Vegas right now.

If GT wins its division, you’d have to say they’re the favorites against Clemson in a title game based on the simple fact that they beat them quite soundly already. 80%.

UGA versus LSU (or, less likely, Alabama or Arkansas) would be a big underdog… but you never know. If the Dawgs get there, they could be riding a 10-game winning streak. That does something for confidence. Let’s say 15% of winning.

Oh– and UGA beats GT this year. 100%. ;) (Okay, I give the Dawgs about a 60% chance in non-fan-based reality).

gdawgin…………..they don’t force me to buy them, but that doesn’t mean I don’t have a right to want better for my investment. TECH got screwed a few years back when we played VT back to back there. Now, the odd years the Home Schedule is great and the even year Home Schedule Sucks. When you add some crappy OOC games to the even year it makes it even harder to sell a Season Ticket Package. I can tell you I am far for the only tech Season Ticket holder to feel this way. To better MARKET the program I want to play very good OOC teams. I hove the H & H with Auburn, Miss St, Vandy, Notre Dame, and games like that. If you want easy OOC games you play the teams in your state not New Mexico, North Carolina, and places like that.

BobDawg,

Just hyping up the Auburn-Georgia game. I also remember a few times when Georgia got the best of Auburn when they weren’t supposed to. That game, I believe will always be a good football game … even for us who aren’t fans of either team but enjoy the sport for what it truly is.

Jeff, We’d better take it a step at a time. While top ten teams typically have a tough time winning games at Bobby Dodd Stadium, this VA Tech team will come in fighting and scratching and expecting to win. Likewise, if you’re buying into that 12 1/2 point spread in UGA’s favor, I would think again. Auburn won’t be laying down for anyone, especially UGA. Besides, should GT or UGA both win their games this week, they’re both ripe for an upset the next week. Especially GA Tech playing Duke who is well coached and playing pretty good football. One week at a time, but wouldn’t it be great if the SEC East champion were playing the ACC Coastal champion for the state championship on Nov. 26th?

Auburn is a huge threat for UGA. I would in fact say UGA might face a tougher matchup than GTech since Va Tech’s offense is pedestrian. Two big games though, and I think it would be great if they both win out until facing one another.

AceDawg

I also think if UGA finds a way to the SEC Championship, they would be a better matchup with LSU than Bama. While LSU has earned its number ranking, their lack of strong QB play means the UGA defense would have a chance to attack, and a good offensive line performance against the LSU defense would give Aaron Murray a chance to perform better than McCarron did for Bama. He’s the best QB LSU will have faced, and Conley and Mitchell are looking like a sweet 1-2 deep threat punch. It would be foolish to put money on UGA, but the Dawgs are good enough to tee it up and have a real fighting chance.

I would rather play them at Auburn. We have better luck in their stadium. Anyone who thinks we will cover the spread is insane. We may win. 50/50. We will not cover 12. I predict the line to shift by at least a touchdown by gameday. As far as criticizing Georgia for their schedule, seems pretty stupid. We opened with a top 5 team and got beat, played well against SC but gave it away and have not lost since. Yes Florida and Tennessee are down, but Vandy is playing better than ever and I am pretty sure everyone thought Miss State was good until they realized how good LSU, Alabama, and Ark are. Florida lost two games to the number one and number two teams and no one is going to beat those guys. Georgia got lucky and did not have to play 1 and 2, but we are responsible for a handful of losses on teams ranked at the beginning of the year. We may have to play LSU. Doubt we could win and not sure I would want to upset the SEC streak and give OSU Stanford or Boise a SEC free title chance with and upset in the dome. Lot of ifs and buts being thrown around, but it would be real nice to get a W against Auburn after last year and their BCS* performance.

For everyone talking about LSU’s poor quarterback play, would you care to take a look at what they’ve done to the competition prior to Alabama, particularly those teams you both have played? Below are Jarrett Lee’s numbers against Mississippi State, Florida, and Tennessee combined. Further, you will find Aaron Murray’s against the same competition.

Jarret Lee: 41/54 (76%); 5 TD; 1 Int; 505 yards
Aaron Murray: 43/84 (51%); 4 TD; 4 Int; 556 yards

So if you think you can stay competitive with LSU based on their poor QB play, you’d better look yourself in the mirror, because based on these numbers, I’d take Jarrett Lee all day.

Unfortunately nothing is going to change in Athens until UGA changes its mediocre coaching. That’s where the difference is, and that’s why everyone outside Dawgtard Nation just laughs at Dawg fans getting so excited year after year about what a great recruiting class UGA gets. It doesn’t matter how many blue chip high school players go to UGA, they simply don’t get the coaching they would get at Florida or Alabama or South Carolina or LSU, to name two schools whose programs are far ahead of UGA. And that’s not going to change as long as Mark Richt is in Athens.

Get your heads out of the sand and face reality. And mediocrity and irrelevance.

5150, I was referencing the fact that most of the time, the time of possession battle falls somewhere around even 30/30. Meaning, the defense would be on the field for 30 minutes. I’m not sure if our D has the athletes to keep up with Georgia for 30 minutes, but we can counter that by controlling the rock and only having them on there for 25. Meaning our offense eats clock and has it for 35+. I think our best defense is our offense, and if we can play keep away from Georgia, along with capitalizing in the red zone, we’re going to have a great shot at winning the football game.

And it came to pass that Mark Richt brought billions of people from a distant planet to Earth in spacecraft, stacked them around volcanoes, and detonated fusion bombs in the volcanoes. The Dawgs then aggregated together, stuck to the bodies of the living, and continue to do this today. Society’s biggest problem is to isolate and neutralize the Dawgs and their constant companions, the fleas.

Gamecocks and Gators have had great success in this.

Most people didn’t know this.

Wow where to start on this bunch of retardedness. First off I dont care who comes through as recruits to UGA as long as they go to class and pass and produce on the field and stay out of trouble.

Second: Since when is it Richts job to stalk his 100 players 24/7- I guess Tech cloans CPJ so he do it.

Third: If you could read you would have seen the copy of UGAs teams conduct policy, where it clearly states that tanyone failing a drug test must sit out the NEXT game on the schedule, not the NEXT BIG game. Thats just dumb.

Fourth: The sidelines spilled bc Scam was throwing punches at players like a little pansy. And if you want ot talk suspensions for that… Why wasnt Scam suspended for AU/AL game for clearly throwing punches? Why was Fairley not suspended for his blatant late and dirty hits??

Fifth: Stop being jealous that Richt is 10X the coach that CPJ is period.

Robber who preyed on UGA students sentenced to prison
A Clarke County judge has sentenced a homeless man to 14 years in prison for robbing University of Georgia students earlier this year.

Germil Deun Johnson, 21, was sentenced Monday in Clarke County Superior Court after he pleaded guilty to robbing three students and attempting to rob a fourth on consecutive days in February.

Johnson intimidated three of the students into giving him money, but he assaulted the fourth as he tried to steal her phone, according to the indictment.

He pleaded guilty to four counts each of robbery and aggravated assault, and Judge H. Patrick Haggard ordered Johnson to serve 14 years in prison and another seven on probation.

At the time of the robberies, Johnson was a registered sex offender on probation for a 2009 statutory rape conviction.

Johnson was homeless and living at shelter Feb. 14, when he followed a UGA student who was heading to her home on Berlin Street, Athens-Clarke police said. While she was walking on North Avenue, Johnson threatened to hurt the 21-year-old if she didn’t give him money, according to police, who said the student gave Johnson $11.

Fairley got flagged for one but should have been flagged for 3-4 and ejected. He hit Murray in the spine, the back of the knee, the head. He was out to hurt Murray hence why jumped on top of your player.

I’m with you there but, AU hasn’t had a defensive display to hang their hat on really. I was half expecting you to say strong running game for AU/weak one for UGA. Would make more sense given your projected winner and score.

My personal opinion is that UGA will put some points on the board. Maybe 30. The bigger question to me is, how many can AU put up? Air attack is near non-existant, QB is weak however, can UGA or not shut down the running game. I believe that is where the AU steangth lies. Their D won’t stop UGA but can they hold it to a minimum?

I’m in agreement with you. I believe the lion share of offense will be the RBs running and taking the short dumps. There currently isn’t a passing threat per ’se and hopefully they don’t find one. Dawg D should have a banner day. They size up to handle them with ease. True, stacking the box and leaving the corners rome, AU should have a bad day. They’re defense will struggle with the UGA balance unless they can shut down the running game. They’re secondary is young and weak

ARdawg,

To be honest, I was thinking about the GT-Georgia game, but I guess I can look at the Auburn game. You’re right, Auburn has a pretty good ground game, and they’ll have to live on it. Crowell should (and I say should) be able to establish a ground game for Georgia as well. I’m still worried about him come Thanksgiving weekend, and how well our defense will be able to hold him.

For your Auburn game though, I do think that you guys can win. While there’s the argument regarding that wins have come against weak-to-average offenses, I don’t see this as being the game that Georgia drops. Will Auburn keep it close? Yes. Will Georgia make one or two special teams problems? Probably. But they should be able to overcome it. I’ll say 28-27 Georgia

GT and VT…I’m glad that we’re not going against Tyrod Taylor again, and I think Logan Thomas still needs some time before he can reach TT levels. A lot of the game depends on which GT offense shows up, but I think it’s the offense that gave Clemson fits more than a week ago. GT 34-28

Crowell while he has had some “moments” is for the most part unreliable. When one considers UGA running game well, just don’t consider it and whatever positive comes of it is gravy. Against the weaker teams yes you can count on a balanced game from Georgia. Against stiffer competition we tend to get one dimensional if not, at the wrong time.

Too much responsibility on the freshmen Crowell and no one backing it up. We’ll have the threat of a running game but little else. I say that until Crowell has a breakout game. May be this game but, I’ll believe it when I see it. If I bet any money on this game I believe I would take AU and the points. I think out offense might spudder enough to let them stay in the game. Georgia should win by a TD.

I’ve seen Tech play 3 times already and I can’t figure you guys out. Jekyll and Hyde. There is no amount of money I’d bet on Tech, just too unpredictable. I though Clemson was way overrated and conversely I don’t think Miami is any good. Tough to get a good read on where Tech is at the moment

Dawg1

November 7th, 2011

I just skipped all of the trash talking…

Auburn is always a good game. The line should be between 3 and 5 points, I would think. But it does make me feel better, since the odds-makers are usually right.

If your a Dawg Fan and your assuming Tech will lose Thursday night – you might want to rethink that. Virgina Tech has one loss – to Clemson. But if you look at the teams they have beaten; there really isn’t a signature win there.

Hard came to call; however, while the Clemson win was impressive, Tech managing 31 points was actually the lowest of the last three games Clemson 45, 38 and 31 respectively and with the Clemson Defense giving up an average of 26.7 points a game.

Tech’s ‘D’ averages giving up 23.3, (a little bit of improvement over the last couple of years), while VT’S D averages giving up 15.4. This appears to be where the advantage lies between the two teams and guessing VT has their usual advantage over Tech (and just about everyone else) in special teams.

Should be a fun game to watch…

ARDawg, I wish *I* could figure us out. The only thing that I know is that our defense is actually decent (or at least consistent, especially given our own special teams problems), and when our offense is clicking, it clicks. At least there’s no way to bet money for or against Tech!

As for Georgia, I’ll admit I have a bit of a bias (at least you guys aren’t Duke; I grew up a Maryland fan until I came down to Atlanta). I’ll agree that Georgia should win, and by more than one as I stated earlier. On the other hand, don’t you love the word “should”?

Dawg1, I would agree with most of your analysis. Something to keep in mind, however, is the problems that we’ve had on special teams (most visibly against Miami). Points against, while certainly a good metric for overall performance, doesn’t always give enough credit to defenses that either A) played no part in an opponent’s scoring or B) are forced to play with their backs against the wall, say, with the opponent’s offense starting within the 10. Of course, if you took these into consideration, then I withdraw my comment.

Fair points. I did not look to see how many points were actually scored by the defense. Plus, Tech had such massive leads, that it is fair to say that they were likely getting some time in for the 2nd and 3rd unit. Virginia Tech only had a couple of ‘blow outs’ where they were in that position.

Wish i had not scrolled up.

5150 – well, you have been put in the penalty box before by the AJC and had to agree to tone it down.. Guessing that it’s coming around again.

For the record:

What Ben Jones did was inexcusable. His coach yanked him off the field. He was admonished and he picked up the phone and personally apologize to the player the next day.

Farley was a dirty player. I do agree with you – that if the shoe had been on the other foot, you would have been on this blog trashing the guy and there would be some dog fans defending him. He used his face mask as a ‘cheese grater’ and while stumbling on the ground, found a way to slip ‘helmet first’ into our QB’S leg. Now, the cheese grater play and the play where he could have had a cup of coffee and a donut after Murray released the ball before he drove him into the turf.

Georgia had put up with an entire day of this and that is why the entire offensive line went after the guy. If the refs had did their job – none of this would have happened.

Your welcome to disagree; but if you go back and look at the game and take that ‘Auburn’ hat off – I think that you’ll conclude that this is what happened.

Looking forward to Saturday’s Game. The Seniors from last year are either in the NFL or working on their next career’s. What’s done is done… Maybe….

There is a reason they play the games as none has ever been won on the blogs :)

I see a good team in GT waiting to get out and I hope you guys win out and we do to. It’s difficult to gauge the defenses of both teams as both have to this point both faced mostly sub par offenses or at least offenses on weak teams. At the risk of sounding like a homer, I’d have to give the edge on both sides of the ball to UGA. Again I have only seen a few GT games and my estimation of GT could change this week.

Like or despise Murray, he’s capable of lighting it up, doing what it takes to get it done or simply imploding. He’s been consistently getting it done for the last 7 games. The next 3 could go either way. We have the offensive weapons and the depth I think to outlast the Jackets.

On the defensive side we are much better prepared for that triple option than last year. In the last 8 games our starting D is averaging giving up about 1 offensive TD per game. I expect you guys will do better than that. We are stronger, faster and deeper than last year. We are feeling pretty confident on D. Our offense is yet to play a complete game against an SEC opponent. I don’t see Tech’s D as good as most SEC teams we’ve played. I’d have to give UGA an decided edge in the Hate Bowl

ARdawg, I can’t complain about you being a homer, and I can’t complain when you focus more on UGA than Tech. I actually started to take a look at Georgia’s defensive stats, and I noticed a few things

A) You guys are good against the run against SEC opponents, holding four of your opponents under 100 yards rushing (and heck, two gained negative yards on the ground). However, when you allowed a ground game (Vandy, USC), you got burned. Vanderbilt appears to be rushing 157.9 yds/game, but Georgia allowed 200 yards on the ground.
B) Your rushing defense is holding SEC foes to roughly 60 less yards than their average, but the passing defense is holding foes only about four yards below their average (with heavy skew thanks to Tennessee and Florida).
C) It appears that Georgia’s scoring above SEC opponents’ average points against, with two exceptions: Tennessee and Ole Miss, the two worst teams in the SEC East.

I’ll do Tech’s analysis in a sec

Maryland Jacket

November 7th, 2011
8:39 pm

And for Tech:
A) We’re good against the pass; only two opponents have thrown for more than 200 yards against Tech, and Maryland only got 87 yards. The two games where our foes passed for at least 100 below their average, they rushed at least 80 yards above their average (Maryland and Virginia).
B) Our passing defense is holding our ACC foes to almost 70 yards below their average, but our rushing defense is allowing our opponents 21 more yards than their average.
C) We scored above our opponents average allowed points three times (UNC, NC State and Clemson), and let them score above their average points only once (NC State),

Between the two schools, Georgia allows 188.67 passing yards to Tech’s 177 passing yards. However, Tech allows 176 rushing yards against Georgia’s 84. Both schools allow roughly four points below scoring averages.

So whats your final analysis conclusion? What I gather from it, all things being equal but of course they are not is that they are pretty even. GT gains significantly more rushing than an average team from the triple option and the fact, just just keep it on the ground much more often. UGA ground game has been the destruction of GT in years past. Yet this year is hot/cold. Should be a close one

Instant Dawgma — At some point I’m guessing the SEC will have to increase the number of conference games. It needs to go to 9 or 10. the 8-4 split won’t work in 14- or 16-team conference.

ARdawg, yeah, I pretty much don’t know who’s gonna win our game. If Georgia can get a ground game going a la 2009, that’ll kill us. If we can sprinkle a few completed passes to our own people, that’ll hurt you guys a lot. I think I’ll wait until Thanksgiving week, though, to actually make a real call (14-10 earlier was purely in jest, and with the Bama-LSU game in mind).

Oh yeah, and special teams. Whoever makes the least number of gaffes will probably win (or enjoy fewer heart attacks in any case)

Either way, both of our defenses have come light years ahead of where they were last year, and I’d much rather beat a ranked Georgia team than an unranked one (conversely, I’d grumble less about losing to a ranked Georgia team than an unranked one). I’d imagine that the sentiment is shared, yes?

Also, Jeff, with the additions of Pitt and Syracuse to the ACC in 201-whenever, do you think the ACC would use the opportunity to redo division alignment, or to just stick them in opposing divisions and have them be each other’s fixed cross-division foe? Should it be the former, do you think that GT should try and switch with Boston College? That way, we get to have a tougher schedule each year (Florida State + Clemson with division implications + BC’s former cross-division foe, Virginia Tech)

No question the sentiment is shared. As you know we have problems on ST. Hopefully, Richt and the crew have found a way to work through it
