This already is the second time Isaiah Crowell has run into trouble. (Jason Getz/AJC)
(Updated with confirmation of failed drug tests)
Timing is everything.
A few days following Georgia’s biggest win of the season over its greatest tormentors (Florida), the Bulldogs suspended three tailbacks, including Isaiah Crowell, for the next game. But because Saturday’s opponent is New Mexico State, half the team could be suspended, and it wouldn’t make a difference in the result. It just means that with the team now down four running backs, quarterback Aaron Murray’s favorite call in the huddle will sound something like this: “Everybody go out!”
But, yes — timing is everything, and for Georgia this stinks.
The Dogs have won six straight. They’ve started to distance themselves from a 0-2 start. But now the news is not about the team being on a roll and possibly running the table for the next four weeks and winning the SEC Eastern Division. Rather, it’s about three players veering off course again, which threatens to derail some of the momentum the team has built in the past few weeks.
Coach Mark Richt has suspended Crowell (who also was benched for the first quarter of the Vanderbilt game for unspecified reasons), Carlton Thomas (who also was suspended for the season opener) and Ken Malcome.
All three players failed drug tests that were administered last week before the Florida game, two sources told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. And so we have confirmation that, yes, these are college kids who sometimes do really dumb things.
Richt did not mention anything about the suspensions or drug tests at his weekly news conference Tuesday but released a statement later, saying only: “We have certain standards in all that we do, and their actions do not reflect the Georgia way. They will serve their suspensions, learn a lesson and I’m sure be better men for it.”
Now, there’s a lot of speculation out there about what happened and when it happened. The Twitterverse has gone nuclear with suggestions that Richt and school officials knew something was amiss last week but sat on it, so as to defer punishment until the New Mexico State game (which obviously isn’t as important as the Florida game).
Honestly, there are a lot of coaches in Division I college football where I would believe such a conspiracy theory to be true. But Richt isn’t one of them.
Athletic director Greg McGarity told our Chip Towers, “This has nothing to do with anything that [happened before] the Florida game. Absolutely not. … Certain things are found, and we act right then.”
Just when the Dogs finally got going, they stepped in it again. We’ll find out in the coming weeks how much this impacts the team, and it starts with Crowell. He is the biggest concern. He was benched for the first quarter of the Vanderbilt game (Richt never stated why). So this is at least two strikes for the team’s freshman starting running back. There is no need to amplify how important he is to the team. No. 2 running back Richard Samuel already is out for the remainder of the regular season after ankle surgery, so that’s four running backs off the depth chart.
Crowell clearly still has maturity issues. That’s not uncommon for a freshman. But it can’t comfort Richt going down the stretch of the season.
Running back hasn’t been the most stable of positions in Athens. Less you need reminding, the depth chart last season included Washaun Ealey and Caleb King, both potential returnees this year. But they suffered through suspensions and eligibility issues. Ealey transferred to Jacksonville State. King was declared academically ineligible for this fall and went to the NFL (he went undrafted before signing with Minnesota’s practice squad).
The assumption at this point is that Crowell, Thomas and Malcome all will be back in time for the Auburn game in two weeks. But nothing can be certain — nothing except that at a time when the Dogs are finally winning, the last thing they needed was for a few players to start acting like knuckleheads.
And that would certainly seem to be the case here.

Interesting timing of the suspensions…I figure the violations occurred during the bye week. Tough to swallow considering past RB problems on the team…Ealey, King, etc…

I’m staying out of this one as we can’t know what happened, and I don’t tend to care about issues not happening at GT, but imagine how the walk-on or converted LB or whoever’s gonna get a whole game of playing time feels right about now! I find it fun to think of college football from the perspective of the walk-ons and scout-teamers since I met a few at Tech. Such an interesting life they lead (but don’t think this isn’t a dream come true for their kind.) What an interesting turn of events.

For the second time this year, we have players celebrating a big win by committing violations that get them suspended.

Look, no one roots for this team more than me. But this streak is a smoke screen. We are *better* than last year, but we are not a great team. We certainly cannot afford these kind of distractions.
The issue isn’t who we are recruiting and who is on our team. There is no way Bama, LSU, Auburn and the like get higher character players than we do. We all get about the same type of character player when you blend it all together. Some really good, a few bad apples and lot in the middle.
To me, this is coaching and the tone that is set by the leaders of this program. Either this, or all of our rivals just sweep these instances under the carpet.
This team will not compete for anything worthwhile until there is some form of discipline within the ranks. There seems to be more than there was in the past, but we ain’t even close to where we need to be. Yeah, were winning. But peel back the layers…paper tiger.

Trolls are never happy! If the athletes commit offenses and aren’t suspended, Richt is too soft. If he suspends multiple players, y’all claim he “waited” for a convenient time… Rambo and Boise State ring a bell? And what is so convenient about suspending your entire running game when your other tailback (Samuels) is out? No matter who we’re playing, this could be disastrous. He’s a good coach dealing with 18-22 year-olds who have been treated like rock stars since Pop Warner days, and some handle it better than others. Richt is providing much-needed discipline for the individuals regardless of the consequences for his so-called hot seat job!

There is no way to know what caused the suspensions due to the typical “violation of team rules” statement from the University, but the fact that Crowell is involved should be troubling to UGa fans and coaches – 2 suspensions in his first year is not a good sign. I always hope that Tech and UGa can recruit fine young men and great athletes, but being 18 yrs old and told you’re the best thing since sliced bread your entire life and being coddled to go along with it most of the time is very detrimental to developing good character. Hopefully, he will learn and turn things around off the field and have a good career at UGa, but I would not put my hard earned money down on it – probably 2 yrs at most and off to the NFL if he’s good enough.

Richt has responded with discipline to every infraction that was made public. Far too much blame on him for these kids behavior and far too much credit to Saban for being tough on discipline. He players get in trouble too. Totally agree with recruiting several top running backs. If Crowell does not get kicked off the team before his junior year, he’ll probably leave for the draft anyway.

It is rumored and was discussed on various sports-talk radio today that the violations actually occurred before the Florida game. Is it a violation of rules to allow players to violate team rules, play in a big game, and then suspend them for a non-sense game? That doesn’t seem “by the book”.

The bigger question for CMR is what did he know and when did he become aware of it. If he was made aware of the infractions prior to the Florida game and either hesitated or failed to act then obviously there is a different set of standards based on the quality of the player. If the incident is after the Florida game then appropriate action taken and lets move on.
Time to take Mr. Crowell to the woodshed and have a ” Come to Jesus ” session regarding individual vs team commitment. Every decision comes with consequences. It is becoming more clear why the mother and father wanted IC at Alabama under the intimidating watch of Saban.

Being a Georgia fan, I hate people comparing anyone to Herschel Walker, but how are all those comparisons now to y’all delirious fans? He can’t touch Herschel on the field, but he dang sure won’t even come close sitting on the sidelines in street clothes. The kid has problems, and the way he carries himself shows it. He needs a tough lesson in that this is the SEC, you’re going to get nailed on most plays, every athlete on the field is just as good if not better, and it’s not Team Me anymore like in Little League and through High School. No one player can win every game alone, even Tim Tebow and Cameron Newton needed help, and they are way above the athleticism of Crowell.

What happened, did they stay out late trick or treating?
Nobody believes this happened over the last two days so shame on UGA, coach Richt and anyone else that waited until a lame duck game to suspend multiple players.
And if it was that they were out too late last night trick or treating then I apologize for my logical conclusions above and say Good Job Richt!
Why do they not report the date these violations occurred at least? They would not have to state what violations they broke, but after resting Sunday it could have only been something to do with Halloween. Yeah right…
It just never stops!! Where are the TRUE coaches that want to make firm statements and better their athlete’s lives & behaviors while they have them under their wings? The SEC is all about wins, wins, wins and most all of us SANE people use logic to reach conclusions and the odds that three guys get suspended two days after the Florida win with one being a rest day and the other Halloween is pretty low… I mean L-O-W!
Buck Belue to the rescue on 680thefan radio!!! Go tell all of us SANE people that it just happened Buck… One quick slant pass and hundreds of hand offs to Herschel and he represents the Bulldog nation….Pathetic all the way around…
The Boise State program is the only one I see being ran correctly, but I am sure there are others. BUT NOT IN THE S.E.C.!!
Why does the ajc even bother reporting the suspensions?
At least post a POLL Mark!! Question: What UGA players will be out for Kentucky?
Then we can find out the week of that game and you can award a prize…

Again, blame the coaching staff for on field lack of discipline. Off the field lack of discipline is primarily on the kids. Richt’s primary job is to win games without violating NCAA rules. All of this “coach speak” about helping them be better men is highly over rated on every level of athletics. They can possibly help the kids who want to be helped but for those who don’t, there’s very little a coach can do. Again, sports journalists, why not attempt to interview a kids parents when he get’s into trouble?

However you feel about the kids, it is a sad day that kids can’t obey the rules and play the game. Regardless of whether you are a Georgia fan or a Florida fan, or a fan of someone else, we unfairly blame the coaches for these things. How can coaches police these students 24/7? These are legally grown men.
I think the problem is these kids are hyped up by the media as four and five-star recruits and can do no wrong. Then they get to college and think that because they are athletes, they can do whatever they want.
This is another sad case in the sporting world.

The rumor was they had a suprise drug test and they were caught trying to sneak in another persons urine.Remember.LSU a couple weeks ago.it could happen at any sec school if they have suprise testing im suprised its only 3 players. Just be glad it isnt against auburn.Iam concerned about IC he needs to grow quick or he is not going to be around long.

Having administered many a drug screen I’ll tell you that preliminary results are available in about 5 minutes. Positive tests are then sent to a lab for confirmation which takes 5-7 days. So I’ll buy that UGA found out today and therefore suspended it’s players today. What I don’t buy is that CMR didn’t know before his Tuesday presser.

To all of the Bulldog nation, Coach Mark Richt and Buck Belue I deeply apologize for my ignorance and now fully understand this is being handled within the team and it has been taken care of like the assistant coach that showed his ASS following the Vandy game…

Fishy timing. No details given as to who, where, when, what, and how. Good for CMR taking action now. But if violations occurred prior to the Florida game, also good, no wait, better, for CMR taking action now, instead of then. Making them into better men . . . that is admirable, and absolutely part of his job. But, if he caught these violations, serious enough for full game suspensions, before the Florida game, and then waited until now to execute punishment . . . . then guess what? He is condoning their actions and their attitudes about themselves (i.e. we are inexpendable stars/players who will always get special treatment – even if we are caught and “punished”), and he is not making them into better men. And the next time trouble comes, which it certainly will if they got delayed suspensions because of the big game, the timing could be even worse. Funny thing about truth and Karma — one always comes out somehow, and the other always catches up with you. Let’s just hope that for all the Puppies’ sake, CMR played this one straight.

Reminds me of my best suspension in Tallacrappy. Two of my boys got into a bar fight. I suspended one for a week. I suspended the other for the season. The one with the week suspension didn’t play that week ‘casue we had a bye week. He played the next week. The one I suspended for the season already had a broken leg and was out for the season anyhow.

Doing drugs or drinking in college is most definitely not “thuggish”. I have a hard time understanding how some of you dress yourselves in the morning.
Thug means a cutthroat or ruffian and derives from the name of an Indian band that committed human sacrifice. What they did was stupid, but calling them “thuggish” is just really, really stupid.
The problem with your logic is it is biased in favor of UGA. Any athlete who cares about his or her future realizes early on that doing any type of ILLEGAL drugs is acknowledging they are not focused on the job at hand and their immediate future. Once a player fails a drug test he or she must take random drug test for the remainder of their career or for a minimum of 2 years. Any athlete who decides to smoke dope( synthetic or real) after the LSU HEADLINES three weeks ago is dumber than a box of rocks.
Stop making excuses and admit on a dumb thug would put themselves over the team.

For those on this blog defending a “college kid” or “college athlete” for drinking, smoking dope or doing illegal things and breaking laws, rules or codes of conduct, please stop the defense. There is no defense for breaking any law or rule. You must be 21 to drink at a bar or be in possession of alcohol, do not smoke, inhale or consume illegal narcotics or be in possession of a firearm.
I guess those defending These three knuckleheads also want to blame Dr. Murray for supplying Michael Jackson with drugs while MJ was doctor shopping and chasing minor boys. The logic is unrealistic. Any serious athlete knows that any bad news will follow them til their playing days are over and a drug test will draw major scrutiny.

No one is stating that an 18 year old is a saint but what exactly do you teach the other young kids when they see stars get suspended for the New Mexico State game and get to play against Florida and Auburn. Someone from Columbus told me IC has some maturity issues and a rough home life and CMR is working with him. Fine. This would never happen to a good team. It’s not as if you’d ever see three lsu starters get suspended before the auburn game. Would never happen. That doesn’t happen to good teams and good coaches. That’s why LSU doesn’t gave starting qb’s getting in bar fights and getting suspended. UT could happen to Murray maybe but Jordan Jefferson? No way! That’s just laughable. These things don’t happen to good teams just poorly coached ones like Georgia. The next thing you know someone will try to convince me that bear Bryant had to suspend Joe Namath before a bowl game. Clearly Namath would respect/fear a coach like bear enough not to get in trouble. These things only happen to richt because… You know because… You know it does.

Here you go again, Schultzy. You mis-called the GA-FLA outcome and instead of coming here to eat crow, you use a team suspension of three players (all in the same position) as a reason to throw UGA under the bus. We have not had an inkling of the trouble we’ve had the past two seasons, but somehow you choose to tie it to the totality of everything that possibly could be ‘wrong’ in Athens. These kinds of issues plague EVERY school. UGA is playing more as a team now than they have in a while. While it may not be pretty, its winning games and thats what matters. As for the “FIRE MARK RICHT” comments…you people must be as stupid as it comes. Either that, or you’re not a Georgia fan. Just a Tech fan that wishes everyday to have a program like that of UGA. These trolls have nothing to do but pose as the fans of other schools and post garbage. There is NO discipline issue at Georgia any moreso than any other division one school. You Tech fans touch yourselves at the thought of Richt leaving. Why??? Because 9 of 10 times, you can’t win. CAN’T!

Rumor has it they were from Richt’s personal stash!!!! Otherwise they would not have been suspended! He knew about the drug tests at least as early as last Thursday but did not discover the theft of his personnel stash until after returning from Jacksonville and wanting to celebrate the win. He checked his sock drawer…checked it again…and hit the ceiling. He ran back the security camara and discovered it was his three backs that had performed a hit & run on the drawer. Suspensions resulted.

As much as I am NOT a Georgia fan (and I always find their annual suspensions amusing), I do believe in innocent until proven guilty. It’s not hard to believe that he failed the initial test that alerted there might be drugs in his system, but I would think that they would have had to do further testing to determine all of the details. Why put any punishment to the crime until the circumstances were confirmed? I’d like to believe the school acted immediately once they were sure. I guess CMR could have benched him if there was any doubt, but I don’t think he needed to at the time. Whatever. This whole story will be twisted and turned to favor and position.

How predictable was this? Those saying other teams have same character issues must not be paying attention. Those “other teams” play with discipline and always play hard. We play without discipline and loaf a lot. This is just the tip of the ice berg. The players we don’t suspend tweet opposing coaches! We have a bunch of immature prima donna idiots. Time to clean house. We have become the laughing stock of the SEC – rightly so.
Earlier this year when I commented that Crowell (and others) needed a haircut, I was accused of “not liking people who don’t look like me.” I replied this was about who was in charge and had nothing to do with liking or not liking someone. I submit this was so predictable as to be expected. Come on people! Our program is a mess. Wake up and smell the coffee.

I mean really, every week brings another round of suspensions. The Georgia brand is really getting tarnished. If this doesn’t stop, it will hurt the revenue stream. And when the revenue stream suffers, something will be figured out to stop this lack of control. The Hartman fund is a pretty good measure and it has stood up fairly well with all this adverse publicity. But the good times will only last so long in this negative environment. I’m fed up!

This notion of suspending players but not indicating why smacks of “organizational subterfuge” of due process, unecessary secrecy, a culture of “clandestine rules” and to be quite honest, preposterous nonsense. It matters not how trite, trivial or slight the matter, there is absolutely no “honest reason” to not be ‘forthright with the public on ….”anything”. It’s blatantly dishonest to “either hide…or shield such matters.. It permits those in the athletic administration to act with impunity on any matter so they can avoid public criticism. This is not unlike the Nixon years where an administration felt it owed the public…no “honest” explanation of what was actually happening. This is complete nonsense regardless of the lame excuses offered for nondisclosure. Dishonesty is not limited to public office; apparently it occurs in public institutions. It is nothing but dishonest to the public to suspend a player without stating a reason in public…..that’s right…it’s DISHONEST…And yes …that makes Mr. McGarity and Mark Richt guilty of this offense.

I wish UGA would break from the mold and start recruiting players who are more like Boise State’s. Good, diciplined, deserving kids who come from good families. Enough of giving “scholarships” to players who don’t deserve them and aren’t in college for an education anyway (ala Cam Newton). Time for the NFL to start a minor-league system like MLB and give the inner-city kids a chance to excel in sports, and give student-athletes the opportunity to earn a degree while playing sports in college.

You say we don’t need this now. I say it is exactly what Bobo and CMR want’s as former QB.s . It will give them an excuse to throw the ball 45 times. If we need someone to run the ball I’m sure Marshall or Smith can easily do the job needed against New Mexico State. This is not a very big deal . Another opportunity for Grantham to shut out another team , at least the running part.

Where did it ever say he was suspended for the first quarter at Vandy? I don’t think GA players invented trouble. I remember Urban Meyer suspending Jarvis Moss for one game then let him play against SC, then he blocked the winning field goal, then suspended for the next game. That Jenkins kid who got busted for pot said if Meyer was still coaching he would still be on the team. Now FL has a starting corner named Roberson who was arrested this year and hasn’t seen any suspension. Don’t throw stones.

Not worried about this weekend. These 2 guys that never play will be fine. I am worried about Auburn and Tech, as Crowell has no heart to carry it 25 times and an attitude that tells us by past games he really doesn’t want to. At Georgia, backs come out of the game on their on, unless a goal line play is being set up with a particular package. We better bring in 2 backs next year.

These players have no interest in Ga. football or in the pride and tradition of being a Georgia Bulldog. They are only interested in themselves and their imagined future pro career. They are not team players and football championships are won by teams not individuals. All SE Conference teams need to adopt a zero tolerance rule and when a player is kicked off one team he cannot go play for another team. Send these three on their way. They are poison to team work. Zero tolerance will put an end to such selfish behavior and put the emphasis on the loyalty to the team.

The athletic history of UGA is full of so many sordid, sleazy incidents – dating back to Vince Dooley and continuing through Mark Richt – that it’s impossible to overlook. The school has come to stand for drunkenness and lawlessness, coddling of illiterate athletes who should never have been admitted to college, and rampant cheating by coaches.
UGA and Mark Richt are an affront and an embarrassment to all decent people in this state.

Just for the UGA homers who are desperately looking for a face-saving out in the argument about academic requirements: Industrial Management at Tech is far more difficult than any degree program that any UGA student – athlete or otherwise – is enrolled in. I’m talking about heavy technical subjects like calculus, physics, chemistry, not the remedial studies fluff that UGA goons take (and usually fail – case study is Caleb King).
The football factory in Athens is a pathetic embarrassment to all Georgians.
And a note to the AJC: Ask Mark Richt about that 74% “special admit” rate (i.e., dumbasses who can barely read and who will spend four years in remedial studies) and the average SAT scores for his recruits. That should be an interesting answer.

End the double standard now and give me a break with their just college kids. They have been given a fantastic opportunity to play SEC football and earn a free degree. Should they have to give up getting drunk and smoking pot for 4 years while they represent UGA, YES, they should! It’s very simple, you do anything that embarrass this institution, you’re off the team, no questions asked. This of course will never happen, because we have enter a time where its more important for the win, then the character of the person we allow to wear our school colors and Georgia is not alone in this.
How many of you in your current job can be caught smoking pot, and will still have a job in the morning? No one I know. Bring back standards, ethics’ and moral fortitude.

Six schools — Auburn, Duke, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi State and North Carolina — suspend a football student-athlete for six games after a second positive test, while four schools — Clemson, Ole Miss, Purdue and UCLA — don’t suspend a student-athlete until a third-positive test.
As much as those policies vary, at least, they specify the punishments.
The length of suspension for a student-athlete with multiple positive tests at LSU, Louisville, Nebraska, Texas and Virginia are determined by the head coach and/or athletic director.
The substance abuse policies at Florida State, LSU, Oregon, Oregon State and Texas A&M also are subjective — and in some instances just flat out vague — in defining the penalties for student-athletes that have multiple positive drug tests.

The NCAA does not conduct tests for recreational drugs (such as marijuana, heroin, cocaine and ecstasy) but only for performance-enhancing drugs/steroids. The penalties are the same for each NCAA member institution: a first positive test for steroids is a one-year suspension; a second positive test ends a student-athlete’s NCAA eligibility for rest of his career.

CMR should be fired. Not for the on-field performance of his athletes but for destroying the reputation of the oldest public university in the United States.
It really is unfortunate that with a history like that, UGA’s president, trustees and alumni only seem to care about whether their football team wins. What about the tens of thousands of students who might be receiving a good education but whose degrees will be dismissed as meaningless?

We should have “student athletes” getting the scholarships. That what a scholarship is. It wasn’t designed for athletes to come in and take up space in the classroom so that they can play on Saturday and major in Leisure Time, and still flunk out or move on to the NFL early. When I hear someone say that we should pay these players, I want to puke. I have a son in college and if he was getting a full ride I’d consider that more than enough payment. First of all the results don’t come back instantly. @reckingball..are you f’ing crazy? No team will kick a guy off for one positive weed test. If that were the case, Ealy would have been gone a looong time ago for his antics. I’m still surprised that people get all bent out of shape when college football players get caught with weed. Why? 1) Many people in college experiment with drugs, so why should football players be expected to act any differently? You say that they represent the University. Sure, but so do the other 30,000 students on campus. 2) Adults use weed all the time and we expect kids not to? People who want to fire Richt…just who are you going to replace him with? Fire a guy with 100+ wins and replace him with who? Is Richt perfect, heck no, but I don’t see anyone out there who is better. Kirby Smart, you say? What’s his head coaching record? ….that’s what I thought. Just look how well Will Muschamp is doing in Gainsville this season. Do you want that in Athens?

These are not just normal “kids”- they are employees of UGA! They are “paid” to play football. Whether they are paid in the conventional sense is an argument for another day. But they are “paid” as they get a free education, room, board, books, whatever. They are given a tremendous opportunity that most of them squander away. Kids or not- as “employees” they should be expected to act a certain way.
If I test positive for weed on my job, I would be fired in a heartbeat! Nothing different with them. Either live to a certain standard, or hit the road- that simple.

I don’t know how the drug test is taken. But I do know if a test looks suspect they will take another test to comfirm. As far as blaming Richt for these youths smoking pot you mite as well say he’s giving it to them and smoking it with them. There are some strong sport drinks out there that MITE show traces of what ever.My point here is MITE HAVE ? I’m surprised he’s not getting blamed for the past AD’s DUI.Saturday I knocked something over and it broke. Yes Richt I told my wife that you did it !!!!!!!!! SICK EM

I am a motivational speaker and business consultant for over 150 clients. A HUGE Dawg fan, spent 22 here and 22 in Oklahoma, now back here in the south. Experiencing the Sooner NFL nation and supporting the Pokes at OSU, was there for both. My assessment is as many here, CMR would benefit to become a disciplinarian rather than a friend to these players. They are not there to find themselves as a “better man” but to find themselves as leaders and representatives of our fine institution as a Georgia Bulldog. The “mentality” of passing a doobie is illegal, and to be part of a great tradition as we have in the Bulldog Nation is a privilege that should not be ignored nor dishonored. One more strike for Crowell and all of them, kick them off the team. Employees only get three strikes, and in drug violations only one in the business world and they are terminated. Period.

Why can’t Preacha Man Marjoe Richt recruit talented players with a little character? Why does he seem to prefer the Gangsta Thug genes?
Isiah has a fork in the road. To the left, Mr Crow Well can follow the footsteps of Caleb King and Waushaun Ealey with his Rastaman dreadlocks into oblivion as a rap artist wannabe talkin the ghetto trash. To the right, Mr Crowell can literally clean up his act and provide some mature leadership as a gifted athlete with a future like Herschel Walker, Knowshon Moreno, and Richard Samuel.
Only he can make the decision.
If he goes left, we need to get this energy vampire off the bus before he poisons others.

Here’s another viewpoint. As one who has both imbibed as well as inhaled, and while in college, and haveing done so with big time athletes that did too, I know that it doesn’t diminish the abilities of the athlete if done in moderation. In excess, yes. But so will drinking too much soda or coffee or anything else in excess.

I can totally see Richt sitting on information that would hurt his chances of winning the game that arguably would have been the straw that broke the camels back as far has his carrier with UGA is concerned. Either way I wouldn’t be surprised.

Jeff,
I’m on the record in being more than critical of the knuckleheads at the AJC and for not supporting our local teams. I do appreciate your support of UGA in this mess. Instead of celebrating a big win at Florida and having a real shot at the East Division Championship, we have to be involved with this suspension crap. Kids make mistakes; I know – I’ve been one and so have all of you pundits and readers. This doesn’t excuse the situation, but you either believe in the words of Richt and McGarity or you don’t. If you don’t then you are no friend of Georgia football. I can’t think of two men that I trust more in at least what they say – and none of you have evidence to the contrary. The boys have been punished and that’s that. Look, players love these kind of games, they have opportunities on both offense and defense to pad the stats and make themselves look good. Instead, they get nothing and have this suspension saddled around their necks from now on. No they don’t deserve a break here – let them be punished and let’s move on. Who knows, someone may step up that we don’t know about.
Thanks, Jeff and go Dawgs!

For once, I can’t argue with anyting Schultz wrote about this today. Crowell, two strikes, Thomas, two strikes, Malcome, if you count quitting as one strike, he how has two. It remains to be seen if this trio joins Ealey and King as big recruiting mistakes. Hindsight is, indeed, 20-20.

Of course college kids drink beer and smoke pot. In most cases, they are also paying for their education.
Football players, whether fans like it or not, are held to a higher standard. They represent the school that they play for and their education is being paid for.
So please don’t try to make this out as nothing. It’s not only against the law, but against school policy as well.

UGA fans are the first to jump up and down when similar issues happen to other schools…however, when it happens to UGA, they want to pass it off and sweep it under the rug. It doesn’t matter if we are talking about pot, drinking, dirty play or anything else. Comparing UGA’s bad acts to some other school’s doesn’t solve the problem. Worry about what’s going on at your school. You’ve got problems that need to be fixed.

Some of you need to wake up. This happens at Alabama and other schools as well, but since they don’t suspend players for it we never hear about it. It the problem continues they are just one of the several transfers in the off-season. Why do you think they don’t suspend them? Granted some of UGA more high profile players seem to be involved, but it is the stricter rules at UGA that lead to a lot of these problems coming to light.

Cobb Dog is 175% correct …………………..NFL needs to sign so called 4 and 5 star kids IF they want to take the $ and go profrom HS in an instructional league that plays 6 or 8 games and develop these youg men that way. Most of these kids do not know what a soup spoon is or a salad fork or how to sit and dine in a restaurant, much less discuss theory or world politics or current events or do college math and chemistry and such.
American university grads are sick and tired of stuff like this and we want it to stop. 80% of these young men do not plan on going beyond 3 years and then, jump ship. I say fine …………………the NFL needs to invest and develop them and the universities need to get away from this.
Problem solved.

No need to worry. Just keep paying huge sums for tickets; and winning at any cost; and continuing to write million dollar checks to coach(es) who can’t win the big games; and going to lower level bowl games; and settling for 8-4,9-3 seasons; and no special teams; and suspensions and jailed players. UGA football is in sad shape.
