Jackets’ response to critics suddenly gives them title shot

Few took them seriously at 6-0.

Everybody piled on when they lost two straight.

This is what happens when a sports team operates in a world of around-the-clock analysis and hyper kinetic Tweeters.

Georgia Tech is a good football team, one that, as improbable as it seemed a few days ago, suddenly has a chance to go back to the ACC title game for the second time in three seasons. When Virginia Tech comes to Bobby Dodd Stadium on Nov. 10 – assuming the field and maybe some fans have been resuscitated by then following an unscheduled, late-night Saturday block party — the Yellow Jackets can all but assure themselves of the ACC Coastal Division title with a victory.

There is a pretty good chance they will be home underdogs again.  But if this bunch of 18-to-21-year-olds has proven anything this season, it’s that they seem to operate better after most have already drop-kicked them into third-tier-bowl oblivion.

Tech fans hadn't celebrated like this since winning the ACC title.

Tech fans hadn't celebrated like this since 2009. (Johnny Crawford/AJC)

“We’ll probably be an underdog,” said the quarterback, Tevin Washington. “That’s OK. It’s just motivation. I prefer it that way, because when nobody gives you a shot you can go out and prove them wrong.”

About that chip on Paul Johnson’s shoulder: His players appear to have inherited it. Whatever works.

Tevin Washington rushed for 176 yards, a school record for a quarterback. (Johnny Crawford/AJC)

The Jackets had lost consecutive games at Virginia and Miami. They looked lost and Washington looked shaken. The option offense, which Johnson cherishes like offspring, had produced only three touchdowns in the previous 10 quarters. But against previously unbeaten Clemson, the Jackets rambled again, totaling 383 yards rushing, 443 in total offense and four touchdowns.

Tech upset the BCS’s No. 5 team, 31-17, in a game that actually wasn’t even that close. This came a week after the 24-7 loss to Miami. But the Hurricanes followed up that win with a 28-21 loss at home to Virginia on Thursday night.

Don’t try to make sense of it. Your head will hurt.

When it was over, Tech fans celebrated like they hadn’t since winning the ACC championship two years ago. There hadn’t been a scene at Bobby Dodd like it probably since the Jackets upset No. 4 Virginia Tech that same season, when fans tore down a goal post and carried it to the school president’s house.

(Campus officials have learned something since then: They took down the goal posts after Saturday’s game before fans could get to them.)

“I got into [the post-game celebration] a little bit,” Washington said. “But I tried to get off the field — it got a little crazy when the fans rushed the field. It’s a great feeling. Our team had been down in the dumps the last two weeks. So to come back like this and win is great.”

Yes, direction can change again. But the view in the ACC just got significantly better. Virginia (2-2) isn’t likely to run the table (remaining opponents: Maryland, Duke, Florida State, Virginia Tech). The Coastal title probably will come down to the nationally televised game between the Jackets (4-2) and Hokies (4-1) a week from Thursday. Tech’s only other conference game is at Duke. Virginia Tech plays North Carolina and Virginia.

The Jackets’ defense has steadily improved. (Clemson, which had been averaging 42 points in the conference, was held to a field goal in the first half and 17 overall.) But it’s the bounce-back by Washington and the offense that changes everything. He ran for a 176 yards and a touchdown, including carries of 46 and 56. It helped that everybody around him played better, but he looked more in control. The offense had a rhythm again.

Johnson also is learning what buttons to push with this team. Washington said he reminded them during the week that, “Everybody wrote us off.” The Jackets played with an edge that they hadn’t all season.

When it was over, the coach told the assembled media: “Let us finish the season before you do our tombstone.”

They’ve earned that.

Gt will beat VT, Duke and UGA. UGA isn’t good at all, and their combined record against other SEC foes is 1 – 15, which means the teams they have beaten suck! They have New Mexico next week, which is a joke in itself. GT will win out, be 10 -2 and play Clemson in the ACC championship, be 11 -2 and headed to the Orange Bowl. Look out next year, as the Jacket team is very young. THWG!

UGA fans need to stick to their own blog. Your team has yet to have beaten a team with a winning record. If it’s easy to beat your chests over scraping by a team that’s lost 4 in a row, then do it somewhere it will be appreciated. Our team just beat an undefeated, 5th ranked, team in the Country. Now how did the “Dawgs” do against Boise State?

Great win tech over Clemson. Didn’t see that happening but am not surprised given tech is a good team and Clemson typically stumbles this time of the year. Y’all are jumping the gun a bit, though, proclaiming you’re going to beat down my Dawgs ths year, considering our defense continues to improve to a dominant level. We held Tennessee and Florida to negative rushing yards. Bad teams or not that is an impressive accomplishment. Then there is the fact that tech has beaten uga ONCE since 2008, and we beat your best team in recent memory with arguably our worst team in recent history, in 2009. Because we’ve only won 4 out of the last 22 games against them. Does this sound vaguely familiar to any of you? Let me remind you…

UGA has won the last 2
UGA has won 9 of the last 10
UGA has won 16 of the last 20

Yeah, you can go back to ancient history and find some more wins, but nobody cares. Talk your nonsense to Clemson, you’re only a rivalry to UGA because we’re in the same state.

Tech and Clemson are both jokes as it relates to UGA. Beating Clemson is the biggest statement that Tech will ever make. Clemson has never been significant since Danny Ford left, and when they play Tech it is for the championship of who will be UGA’s whipping boy that year. UGA owns Clemson and Tech, but that isn’t saying a whole lot, because they both play in the pathetic ACC. If either of these pathetic programs were in the SEC, they would be lucky to play in a bowl, and you can forget them ever playing in an SECC game. Would never happen, but they can continue to beat their chests and brag about playing in an ACCC game, which means nothing compared to the SEC. Bottomline is Tech and Clemson are little brothers to UGA, and they would get their asses handed to them every week if they played an SEC schedule every year. But they can brag about winning 5 or 6 conference games each year against, N.C.state, N.C., Virginia, Maryland,Duke, Wake Forest, my God, what a pitiful conference, and what a joke Tech and Clemson really are. ACC=Mediocrity

Great win for the jackets. As for the dawg fan bragging about the SEC schedule and the ACC not having any strong teams: They played miss st, ole miss, tenn, fla, and vandy. WOW what powerhouses. All those teams are no better than NC ST, MD, VA, MIA, and UNC. Actually i think those ACC teams are better. Tech and georgia still have to take care of business as far as their conference schedules go before they have any chance at a conference championship. UGA Fans-

Let’s be realistic, shall we? Isn’t it obvious that the SEC has many advantages over most of the other conferences? With the exception of Vanderbilt, don’t all of your universities have student enrollments of 25,000+? Don’t you have enormous alumni and fan bases from which you can solicit HUGE sums of money with which to build enormous stadiums? Aren’t most SEC schools considered THE university (or universities) in their respective states? And be honest, aren’t the academic requirements of SEC schools generally less demanding on the student athletes than those of the ACC schools?

So, honestly, what gives with all your braggadocio?

We get it. The SEC usually fields a better product than the ACC because SEC schools have the money, the venues, the favorable press and, again, the academics to attract better players ON AVERAGE.

Bottom line? You make fun of Tech’s schedule because you claim that we don’t really play any great teams. Doesn’t that argument boomerang on you because you’re playing us?

I mean, if you beat Tech, well, weren’t you SUPPOSED to beat Tech? But when Tech beats UGA, then we’ve actually accomplished something, haven’t we?

And it is SO sweet when that happens.

Shultzie, First — let me apologize to the Techsters for coming on here when the article is about Tech — I’m trying to lure Jeff out because he has gone into hiding again over his wrong pick about the UGA game (once again). Since I’m on here — let me say congrats to the YJ’s for their victory, and I do think they are the best team in the ACC this year. But, Jeff says in his article “don’t try to maske any sense of it” — to most of us it is very obvious, Clemson is not a top 5 team this year. Heck, Auburn put up 435 yards on them earlier this season. Jeff, I think it is remarkable that you write for the AJC but you can’t even identify the strengths of the two big in-state teams. In case you forgot, you actually picked both UGA and Tech to lose this past weekend. Boy, the AJC was brilliant when they hired you. Whenever you do write your article about how lucky UGA was to win, are you at least going to acknowledge (for the first time) that UGA has an awesome defense this year? I’m still waiting — or is your foolish pride going to get in the way again?

But Gators had opportunities late in the game to win it and couldn’t get it done, so that’s where Dogs and Grantham get credit. Other games, I’ve been torn, like Vandy: Good for most of the half, then struggled late. But overall they’ve been good.

Jeff Schultz

AF Dawg (part III): If your email address is real, kudos to you. Most aren’t that way. But it’s the point of anonymous commenting with screen names. I don’t have a problem with it, but it’s funny that a lot of readers will say, “You’re hiding behind your computer” when everybody knows who I am and how to reach me — readers, athletes, coaches, general managers, athletic directors, owners. I talk to them every day. But obviously readers with screen names aren’t in same situation. Readers get anonymity. That’s fine. But that’s all I was talking about.

Didn’t Florida end up with negative rushing yards — and that is with speed (Demps & Rainey). Sorry to burst your bubble — but it isn’t looking too good for the Jackets against the Dawgs this year. This year’s Dawg defense is drastically improved over last years — that is why we are winning the games we are supposed to win. Remember last year we didn’t even win the games we were supposed to win — somehow we managed to beat Tech last year. Not bragging — just stating fact.

Truth be told, none of Georgia’s games this year would have been close if not for the horrendous special teams play (and we probably would have beat SC). If Georgia’s AD and coaching staff aren’t convinced they need a full-time special teams coach by now, then they’ll never be. I have never seen the UGA special teams look this bad in my entire life. It’s not an intended slight of GT’s tremendous upset of Climpson, who most Dawg fans despise as much (if not more) than Jacket fans. As a UGA alumnus, I congratulate Tech for putting a stop to the national championship nonsense that the Kool-Aid drinkers in Clemson were talking. Hopefully, we’ll both be 9-2 going into our game. Don’t start assuming wins again. Va. Tech has Frank Beamer and Duke is not a given either. These teams are much better than reported and it will take more than showing up to beat any of them. Va. Tech came close to losing in Durham last week. They ACC has started going back to having great coaching like it did in the 90s. We kind of did the Georgia thing for a while hiring coaches for their recruiting ability instead of their coaching ability. The parity in the NCAA will not allow a mass production recruiter anymore you actually have to coach and to be able to hire talent. Why Mississippi let David Cutcliffe go is beyond me but the man is dangerous and has taken Duke back to at least division one. No game for anybody except maybe Alabama and LSU is a given and after watching LSU play Tenn. that theory doesn’t work either. I love what Vandy is doing, great coaching and a great talent in Rogers. Close games and luck are getting Tech and Georgia by and any cockiness is point on the scoreboard for the opponent. These coaches know how to sucker a cocky out of control player at the right moment in a game.

No game is a given stop laying that out there. Duke will be tough even if we are lucky enough to win two national televised games in a row. The ACC is back to great coaching and not a mass production recruiter and any given Saturday or Thursday we can lose, but we can win too Cocky players are suckers for good coaches on the other side.

Don’t like to get into Old Fashioned Hate this early in the season, but with the Dawg trolls prowling a Tech blog and beating their chest over a narrow win over the worst UF team in at least a decade (or more) and with a crippled QB to boot. Seriously ?! I don’t think you really want to win the East and get Bama or LSU. Now that would be ugly. Hit your knees and thank the good Lord fate kept them off your schedule this year.

Back to Tech. When the Jackets come to play they can play. Very simplistic comment, but true. VT will be smarter than Clemson on defense, but Tech’s D is getting better and better and seem to finally be gelling. Hopefully the offense is completely over the mid-season funk. Saturday was the first total TEAM win for Tech. Heck, even special teams did OK. The Jackets need the rest this week to get ready for the home stretch. It’s good that VT is coming up after the break and the Coastal is on the line. It should help keep the kids grounded and focused after such a big win. It’s also a great point in the season to fine tune some areas that need the work. Relax and take a deep breath this week Jackets. Then get ready to get your game on. Go Jackets and THWG !!

Congrats to Tech on their win. It remains to be seen if they keep it going against Va. Tech. UGA successfully got the gators out of their heads by beating them Saturday. It remains to be seen if GT can do the same about UGA.

The ACC and the SEC East are both fun to watch this year, because you just never know who will win from one week to the next.

The Augusta Chronicle is more in the UGA tank than the AJC. Referencing two articles today: from Marc Weisner…”Georgia’s surge has included a rare Tennessee-Florida sweep for the first time since 1988″. Yeah, and both really suck this year. Your point ?
And the really good one from Paul Newberry; “Thousands of gold clad students stormed the field after the game, many of them apparently more pleased about matching Georgia’s victory over Florida earlier Saturday than knocking off an unbeaten conference foe” and “To Hell with Georgia they shouted in unison”. First of all, defeating a top 5 team more than matches a victory over an unranked struggling UF. Secondly, THWG is shouted in unison every time the fight song in sung. Freakin’ bozo. Must be fine grads of the UGA School of Journalism.
Headlines yesterday were basically, Georgia won (with colored picture), Clemson lost (no pictures). Thinking of cancelling my subscription to this rag. No need to cancel the AJC. It’s not delivered this far east in Georgia.

GT can “all but assure themselves of the Coastal Division title” with a win over VT? Wow. Let’s not count out UVA against Duke just yet (despite past performance). Thanks to UVA wins over GT and the U, the Coastal Division will more likely come down to the 11/26 UVA/VT game. That being said, on 11/10 – go Jackets!

zripp3…………..UVa has Maryland, Duke, FSU, and VT. I don’t see UVA coming out of that 4-0 but more likely 2-2. That means the VT v GT is the real decision maker. Tech just has to win and we Should make it to the ACC CG.

Congrats on the big win Bees. I also think you smack down VT under the Thursday Night Lights.
The only team that smacked our D around this year was Boise. Our D did a great job against a stacked SC team (Lattimore & Garcia). Our offense and special teams lost that game.

I don’t know how you guys lost to Virginia or Miami?

Clemson: 23 VT:3
Clemson: 17 GT:31

The GT-VT game will no doubt have a HUGE impact on the Coastal division.

If UVA beats Maryland and Duke, then
the UVA-FSU game in Tallahassee will be big.

As improbable as it seems…If UVA were to somehow find a way to also beat FSU
then the Coastal division will be decided on Nov 26th in Charlottesville, VT vs. UVA.

And if it does comes down to that game, UVA will DEFINITELY upset VT,
sending a 6-2 UVA team to the ACC-CG, over a 6-2 GT team, due to the tiebreaker.

You have a lot of nerve complaining about any UGA fan being on a blog concerning Tech. You spend half of your day, it would seem, on the UGA blogs posting negative crap. Kettle calling the cat black syndrome it would appear in your cases.

GTFAN478,

So, you are saying you could beat Vandy and UF and they would just be after thoughts from your mighty team. Why don’t you say that about those strong ACC monsters called Virginia and Miami that beat you. Even Maryland gave you fits, and you really think you are going to beat UGA. Please tell me where I can purchase some of that dream food you are obviously over indulging in. It might be a fairly decent game, but your offense will not run so freely against the DAWGS defense this time.
See you in November, and the DAWGS will give you another early Christmas present to stew on for another year. I am sure then that your excuse will be that your academic standards do not permit you to recruit the players that UGA does. Never mind the fact, that in 75% of the cases, you DID try to recruit them and they chose UGA over Tech. Suddenly then, when they choose UGA, they become over rated, thugs, muggers or whatever other insulting name you can think to call them. I think you confuse, the people walking around in your campus area, with the kids UGA does recruit.

Da Dawg – that Tech offense has been used in the past against UGA by a lesser team, the Ga Southern Eagles. Guess what, it still racked up points. I would “book” that it will do the same.

Speaking of Georgia Southern, the Eagles are the prelude game for Georgia next year to Georgia Tech. They will be playing with another QB next season since Jaybo Shaw graduates this year.

As much as I despise them, I love watching Tech eat the clock away by pounding it out on the ground. I’m not sure why UGA doesn’t run more. They have a bigger offensive line than any NFL team and should be able to push any defensive line around. FIRE BOBO!!

Mountain DAWG

Seems like every team has to either pass the ball or hope for special teams breakdowns to stand a chance against UGA. If the dawgs figure something out on special teams, what is tech going to do? Grantham’s 3-4 defense is going to force many 3-and-outs for Tech. Wonder what their defense will be like if it has to stay on the field more than 25 minutes? Johnson is probably going to have to come up with some kind of COLLEGE offense to replace his high school one that works pretty good against (snicker) ACC teams. BTW, Crowell SUX. Can’t seem to stay in the game if he gets a hangnail. Richard Samuel is a beast and needs to be fed often!

tech will and should be the underdawg. the level of talent on their team will make sure of that. clem had to play really really bad and tech played really good to get this victory ..dont expect va tech to make the same mistakes

Why, if GT has history, is this factoid true?

November 3rd, 2011
10:58 am

GT played and lost in the 1967 Orange Bowl. Florida handled them and it is very likely that Bobby Dodd Jr was on the bench for the Gators as a never used QB.

GT played and lost to Iowa in the 2009 Orange Bowl and was humiliated by slow, German American farm boys. At halftime, GT accumulated a whopping 54 total yds with Dwyer and Nesbitt accounting for about 24 total yds at that point.

Yes, they won the 90 Citrus Bowl and a fraction of the MCN. Hey, congrats. A % is better than no % for sure.

Beyond these three ( two ) major bowl games since the mid 50s, what other bowl, called BCS today, has GT attended???

Last Cotton Bowl for GT? Possibly early to mid 50s.
Last Sugar Bowl for GT? Possibly mid 1950s …………. 1955, or 1956?
Orange Bowl is it, then tons of Blue Carpet Bowls and Shoney’s Two for One Shrimp Bowl in Shrevepot over the last 45 -50 years. TWO major bowl trips are it for GT.

Sad but true.
