Tevin Washington and teammates celebrate after his second-quarter touchdown run.
(UPDATED: 12:15 a.m.)
Was it all a setup? Was the plan to unravel offensively like never before during Paul Johnson’s tenure on The Flats, lose consecutive games after a 6-0 start, then hit the BCS’s No. 5 team across the head with a 2-by-4 — you know, just for a little drama?
Or maybe Georgia Tech was just teasing Independence Bowl officials.
The Jackets didn’t merely upset Clemson Saturday night. They handled the Tigers with alarming ease. They played easily their best game against their strongest opponent of the season. They allowed Clemson the first three points of the game, then scored the next 24. They had well over 400 yards in offense. They won 31-17.
Did that just happen?
“We played hard and we played with emotion,” coach Paul Johnson said. “When that happens, you have a chance to win.”
And suddenly, a season that seemed to be spinning out of control still has the chance to turn into something special.
When it was over, fans swarmed the field. I’m not sure, but I think I even saw Johnson smile.
“I knew we wouldn’t quit — unlike some people,” Johnson said, referencing doubts about the team from media and fans. “I knew we would play hard.”
Quarterback Tevin Washington, who came back from two shaky performances to rush for 176 yards (a school record for a quarterback) and a touchdown, said, “Coach just told us that it was a great team win and everybody had written us off.”
That won’t be an issue going into the Virginia Tech game Nov. 10. The Jackets (4-2, 7-2) are a game behind the Hokies in the ACC Coastal, but another win over a likely favorite would all but put them in the ACC championship (with only the Duke game remaining on the conference schedule).
Dabo Swinney’s first game as Clemson’s interim head coach came against Tech and Johnson in 2008. The Jackets won 21-17. Johnson was 3-1 in four head-to-head meetings between the two going into Saturday, so it’s not as if the Jackets haven’t had recent success against the Tigers.
But how do you see leads of 24-3 (halftime) and 31-10 (third quarter) coming for a team that only two weeks ago lost to Virginia?
Clemson had won eight straight. It has one of the nation’s most prolific offenses, with 114 points in the last two games. Tech had lost two straight. It’s offense had been more like an old tire with a leaky valve. In the last 10 quarters going into Saturday, the Jackets had scored three offensive touchdowns.
That’s like giving Paul Johnson the key to the U.S. mint and telling him, “You can only take a nickel.”
But neither team looked itself in the first half. Clemson had five full possessions and was held to one field goal, two punts, a fumble and a missed field goal. Swinney left the field with that stunned wildebeest look on his face.
The Jackets failed to gain even a first down on their first two possessions. Then they scored 24 points on their next four.
They got some help. Louis Young forced a fumble on Clemson’s backup running back, D.J. Howard, and Rod Sweeting recovered at the Tigers’ 19. (Officials originally ruled Howard down but the play was overturned on replay.) Six plays later, Orwin Smith scored from the one to give Tech its first lead at 7-3.
But the key to the offense on this night was Washington. He ran and passed better than he had in weeks. It seemed in recent games that his confidence was shaken. When Synjyn Days played the final inglorious minutes in last week’s loss at Miami, the thought occurred Johnson might even make a change at quarterback if Washington struggled early against Clemson.
That wasn’t necessary. He looked like the Washington of early season. He had a career-high 46-yard run in the first half (when he rushed for 85) and then trumped that with a 56-yarder in the third quarter. He completed a 44-yard pass to Stephen Hill (whose spectacular catch led to a late-half touchdown run by Smith). Washington also might’ve thrown a long touchdown pass to Hill but the wide receiver let a perfect pass slip between his hands near the Clemson 20 as he streaked down the right sideline.
The Jackets’ offense was churning. It had touchdown drives of 80 and 78 yards to close the half, making it 24-3. When Clemson scored in the first 1:26 of the second half, Tech responded with a 77-yard scoring drive of its own to make it 31-10.
Tech tried to make it interesting. A Washington fumble at the Clemson three late in the third quarter prevented a potential 38-10 lead and an early celebration. With the score 31-17, a Washington interception with 10:39 left gave the Tigers possession at the Jackets’ nine, with a chance to close to within a touchdown. But on first and goal, Taj Boyd’s pass into the end zone was intercepted by Jemea Thomas (wide receiver Sammy Watkins turned around after the ball already was over his head).
That was it. Clemson had been given its last chance. And Tech had morphed back into a winner.

The offense can work when everyone does their job. The defense proved that they can “man up” and own the opposition. When everyone does their specific job, this offense and defense can work.
It’s not always gonna be pretty, true enough. And I don’t agree with CPJ’s position on everything (such as handling of special teams and his take on recruiting rankings) but he’s a pretty good coach overall.

It’s unfair to say Washington fumbled as the Clemson guy was 3 feet offside as shown on replay and literally took the hand off. How do both officials miss that as both announcers were incredulous. Cost Tech 7 points.

Great all around physical play by the Jackets. Hats off to the defense; in particular Jemea Thomas who intercepted 2 passes and forced a fumble, not to mention all of the tackles he made and passes he defended. Tevin Washington made great passes (except for the interception, where Stephen Hill was wide open for the TD) and great reads, pitches, and runs. Great blocking all around as well; from the offensive linemen, A-Backs, and wide receivers. Even the kicking game did well (with the excepting of the one kickoff return coverage).

The “fumble” on the three in the third quarter was the result of the defensive tackle of Clemson being offsides. It was clearly shown on TV replay and the officials blew it. Tech should have been awarded the ball and would have had a chance to score. It did not change the outcome of the game but it is too bad that such an obvious foul was missed by the zebras. Tech did a good job. Clemson has a fast and powerful team.

I agree with Spider… that missed offsides call was essentially a 14 point swing in favor of Clemson (granted GT allowed them to march 99 yards for a score following the blown call). This game should have been a bigger blowout than it was… more like 38-10… but I guess the refs wanted to make it interesting!

Georgia Tech soundly defeated the nation’s #5 team. The blocking was excellent and it was the best defensive effort against a very talented offense in a long time. That’s all that needs saying. But, the failure to call that offsides was the worst call (or lack there of) I’ve seen this year.

This win has set the GT program back because it merely delays the inevitable.
By winning this Game Tevin “Campbell” Washington will start another year and it will only delay Vad Lee becoming the starter at QB.
Also, it will only serve to bring in more QBs like TW that cannot throw good enough to beat “real” CFB Teams going 4-9 for less than 100 yds. might beat Klimpson, but you won’t beat Teams from “real” BCS conferences, especially in Bowl Games with 35+ days to prepare.
The win might feel good right now but it only gives us one more yr. of sub-standard recruiting and one more yr. of TW starting at QB.
Games like this don’t move GT closer to Oklahoma, LSU, Bama etc., teams like that that we will have to be better than in order win MNCs or to play well in BCS Bowls.
Basically we got temporary satisfaction with tonight’s win and more long term pain of 8-4 seasons or 7-5 seasons and more Recruits that won’t beat uga at least 50% of the time.
Now we have to live through TW starting at QB in 2012, what GT fan is actually looking forward to that?

Its nights like these that make football the best sport on earth. Going into it, I fully expected having to force myself to watch the entire game and being miserable for three plus hours. The opening possession by Tech confirmed by fears that this team just wasn’t going to be able to put up a fight. And then, suddenly they were an entirely different team. I still can’t fathom how quickly Tech morphed back into unstoppable on offense. This was the most enjoyable Tech game since the 2009 homecoming against Virginia Tech. How do we get the team that showed up tonight to keep coming to our games?

WnE, just go away with your usual negative B.S., 176 yards rushing and complete control of the offense was Tevin’s mark tonight. He has played approximately 1 full season and I, for one, feel good having him at the controls of this offense. Just what are your coaching credentials? CPJ knows what it takes to run this offense and “fans” like you THINK you have some idea of what it takes to win at the FCS level. Earlier, when Tech was 6-0 we did not see hide nor hair of your b.s. and now you think to come in here on the night of a great win by the Jackets and start with your drivel yet again. Tell you what, I trust CPJ and his staff to do what is needed a while lot more than your knowledge. Unless you’ve coached at the FCS level why don’t you find another team to “root” for, you’ve become more than annoying.

For those like GTBoob that want to criticize my comments, one simple question:
Do any of my critics really want to see one more year of TW at QB for GT?
I wasn’t pulling for GT to lose, I’m just upset that Klimpson didn’t man-up and do their jobs tonight, by laying down & losing, Klimpson caused GT fans like me that actually know something about CFB to realize that this win will only lead to more TW at QB in 2012.
No logical CFB/GT fan could ever think that that is good for GT FB.

Great effort and sound victory by the Jackets. One thing I noticed that seems to have been an issue is the D-Line really seemed to get some penetration up front. Great athletic play by Izaan Cross batting down a T. Boyd pass. The defense was solid against one of the most athletically gifted offensive teams in the country. On the other side, the O-Line really played well. Great win for the Jackets. Put this one in the books and get ready for the Hokies. It will be another tough one, but if Tech plays their remaining games like they played tonight, they WILL win them all… GO JACKETS!

@WnE, to answer your question, yes, if he continues to run the offense as he ran it tonight. If Hill catches the first pass his numbers would be very acceptable in the passing game. Vad Lee is going to have his opportunity to win the starting job and, as I said, I trust CPJ to put the person in who is going to give this team the best chance to win. I’ll ask you again what are YOUR credentials that would make YOU better than a coach who has won at all levels to make the determination who is better at a given position? Your name calling is so mature and I’m sure you have a better grasp of what is needed to win at the FCS level. While we’re at it, you gripe about CPJ’s recruiting. Looking at the last 2 classes and the 2012 class, I’m pleased. Lots of talent that is starting to show. If theses young men can’t play at the FCS level(as you’ve alleged) they sure have fooled a while lot of FCS coaches in the recruiting process. As to Clemson laying down, I sure did not see that tonight, I saw a team outworked and outcoached. Once again why don’t you go “root” for some other team. True Jacket fans surely don’t need or want someone of your ilk around.

GT ain’t as young as you think they are:
CPJ has been selling the GT fanbase a load of bull.
The DLine has 2 RS-SRs. and T-Jr. as starters, that means they are 3 to 5 yrs. out of HS on the DL.
The WRs start a T-Jr. and a T-Sr., they are 3 & 4 yrs. out of HS.
The A-Backs start a RS. SR. and a T-Jr. that means they are 3 and 5 years out of HS.
The QB is a RS-Jr. he is in his 4th yr. out of HS.
The O-Line has 3 RS-Sophs. and 2 RS-Jrs. that means they are in their 3rd & 4th years out of HS this season.
The top-2 B-Backs are a RS-Soph and a RS-Sr., once again in their 3rd & 5th yrs. out of HS.
The LBs have a T-Soph., a RS-Soph., a T-Jr. and T-Sr. that means they have 3/4 of their Starters that have been out of HS for 3 or 4 yrs.
The 2ndary is the only place GT is close to young, and we aren’t “really young” there either; our Top-5 in the 2ndary are a T-Sr., a T-Jr., a RS-Soph. and 2 T-Sophs.
Anyone that knows anything about CFB can see that GT is no younger than any other CFB team when you look at the guys that actually get on the field, basically CPJ has lied to the GT fanbase to make excuses for the Team’s poor play before tonight’s game.
GT is in no way a “young CFB Team”!

This all starts with a total disrespect from local press for the ACC and too much respect for the SEC. Georgia has played a weaker schedule than Tech this year yet keeps getting positive expectations. Tech travel to a very well coached Va. and Miami team on the road, has a few bad breaks and you would think they are playing like an old time Vanderbilt or Duke. Bradley said they were not a very good team which leaves me wondering what he thinks they are a bad team? Bad teams lose games by 21 point or more, there are enough around here for him to study. Good teams do not always go a season undefeated especially when they underestimate they opponents with the help of people in this press who don’t take the time they are paid, to do the research and to paint an accurate picture. The only difference between the SEC and the ACC is Alabama and LSU. Does Georgia play either one of them or Arkansas? Nope. But the other team that is underestimated by this local press year in year out is Auburn. The truth sits on the field. Spurrier, Johnson and Auburn prove about every year why they are paid the big bucks, and the boys in the press box are just trying to sell copy.

Afraid not Schultz. The officals tried to make it interesting. This game was a thorough a$$ whipping made closer by two incompetent officials who should issue a formal apology.
The media looks really stupid now for all the Clemson hype. 1981 all over again; Boyd for Heisman; yada yada yada. Yeah.. Right.
When Tech plays inspired football they can hang with all but maybe two or three teams. What we saw against UVA and Miami was a lack of motivation and concentration. I guess you always play best when p!ssed off. I hope the Jackets stay p!ssed the rest of the way and play up to potential. The Ghost……I agree with the very bad no call on offsides. But the Ncaa has nothing to do with officiating and can’t suspend those two guys. I am glad they don’t. They (NCAA) never gets anything right!

I am a Dawg fan, but anybody that thinks that the football program is not in good hands with Paul Johnson is crazy. Great win for the Jackets! Only if Ga. Southern could have pulled it out it would have been a great day. Terrible officiating in the Eagles game. Anybody could see that the last TD pass was incomplete.

There was NO fumble by Tech on the Clemson three-yard line in the third quarter. There was a blatant defensive offside where a Clemson player grabbed the ball while Washington was calling signals. That foul was overlooked by the officials for reasons that will never be known. It was NOT a fumble because the ball was taken by Clemson before the play began. A fumble is only possible during the play, not on a dead ball.

What a win. I said before the game that we had a good chance if we did not commit any “bonehead” plays like we did at UVA and Miami. We can line up with anyone when we don’t beat ourselves. The only bonehead play in the game was made by the refs who missed a call when the CU player actually received our snap from center. How in the world can a defensive player make that play w/o being off sides? If the Tigers had come back and won that game all hell would have broken out. I hope the commissioner takes action regarding this. Oh yes, J. Thomas is the best player on the team. Now we have to handle VPI and Duke.

DHD – It was a big win but if Clemson is suppose to be the best in the ACC then it is mighty weak. But good win for the Jackets. I don’t believe Clemson coaches had never seen the triple option before. To us our win was big and that is all that is important to us. I do want to congratulate the Jackets though and Coach Johnson who has taken some heat.

I have to admit first the Gators are not well coached, and I do expect a new head coach in two years. That said, our team let the dawgs escape when the game could still be won.
Tech’s win came because the kids finally got their heads out of the clouds, listened to their coaches and put the effort forward to beat Clemson. Although Virginia is proving to be better than anyone thought they were, the loss to Miami was devastating, mainly because the effort on offense wasn’t there. Now it’s possible the Jackets will win the rest of their ACC games and meet Clemson again in the ACC championship. The game against UGA will be an interesting one now since the Jackets defensive backs are getting good and the defensive line can stop the run.

Im still baffled by the Virginia and Miami losses after seeing last nights game. Not sure if it was the fact that we were suddenly playing harder teams compared to the first few, midterms or what. Last night showed what this young team can do if they are prepared and fired up. Johnson and Groh prepared this team well. Maybe it was also the doubters that fed this team, who knows, but as PJ said this team is young

It really is not fair to blame the entire officiating crew for the blown no-call. That came down to the two line judges and they were horrible the whole game, not just that play. They had so many bad spots througout the game. I watched the replay this morning because it can be tough to accurately judge in live action and it really was just as bad as it looked. Those two guys should not be allowed on the field again but the ACC will probably just turn a deaf ear and thank their lucky stars it did not come back and bite them this time.

Our panty waist commissioner will not do anything. He didn’t when North Carolina was here a couple of years ago and Tech was trying to get into position to at least kick a field goal at the end of the half. Tech completes a pass for a first down and runs out of bounds. Both should have stopped the clock. But not with that crew. The clock ran out and the half was over. But the North Carolina lover, he was there athletic director for about 10 years, did nothing to that crew. Why do you think NC wins so many games especially in basketball. Not only is the basketball team good but they have help from the comissioners office to insure the calls go their way when they need it. It would be the same for their mental migit football team if they could at least stay close in games. Remember they had to have a young lady write reports for them to try to stay eligible and the coach lied about not knowing. A complete loss of institutional control but nothing from the comissioner and I would bet they get off light by the NCAA just like Miami did. My point is don’t expect anything from the worst commisioner in college foorball in this case.

I am going into business as a Special Teams coach, along with my assistant, Bubba Linejudge. As a team we will specialize in goal line defenses. We will train our defensive tackles to charge offsides, and grab the ball from the center’s hinney, before the quarterback gets a chance to receive the ball. Then, Bubba will come in and call it a fumble.

I have been very critical of the Jackets for the last 4 games. I was dead wrong about one thing. They definitely do have the ability to perform at this level. I was convinced that they did not. They showed what can happen when you go out and block and tackle and they turned in an amazing performance.
I still cannot understand the half hearted performances of the last 4 games and the miserable coaching done in them. Where did this defense come from last night? They have played like bums in every previous game. And how do we move the ball like that against the best team we have seen (by far) and we can’t do it against Virginia, Maryland, Miami?
A lot of questions, but you have to give the team and coaches a big A+ for a fantastic job.

@TechRon.
It called the road game effect.
The Clemson FG kicker is right now trying to figure out how he could kick it so poorly on one attempt.
Maybe you’ve never had people screaming at u wishing u ill.
If u ever do, your questions will be answered.
Before that in the Maryland game, a fade pass that was picked may have started Tevin’s loss of confidence and prevented that game from being a blowout.
I’ve never liked the fade since Joe Hamilton was picked on one as a freshman preventing a win at Notre Dame.

I really wish we could get rid off the folks in both fan bases without the decency to behave on the other’s blogs.
Probably teens but lacking in maturity and common decency even if older.

You’re forgiven.
But you went.
How about the folks who sold because of the weather or to get money back on their costs?
Those folks missed out big time.
TV does not really cut it.
In 2009, some young Tech fans who sat on one side of me told me during the VT game celebration that Georgia fans would pay huge amounts for their tickets so they were going to sell.
Since I did not want to be the overbearing older fan, I just expressed my disappointment with “you’re going to sell your ticket to the big game?”.
But I decided I was going to get on them during the Wake game.
Couldn’t though.
They sold it too.

Dawg trolls.
All mature Uga fans were nice to me leading up to our games maybe hoping for good karma.
Even a Dawg fan doorman at a night club started up a conversation saying nice things about Tech and I said I was glad Samuels scored the winning TD.
He agreed saying it has not been fair to him to keep moving him from offense to defense.
Maybe u bother some Tech teens but for adults, you’re just an annoyance.
Adults realize the economy is in a mess and we need to cooperate with each other.

Breaking news, yes, there are clearly some bandwagon fans at Tech, and I for one think it sucks. I NEVER give up on the team, and I have certainly never doubted either Johnson or Groh. But you mutt fans should know all about bandwagon fans. How many of y’all were ready to fire CMR after those first 2 games. He and his staff still haven’t really done anything to prove they are better than what they appeared to be in those games, but all is apparently forgiven because the mutts have won 5 straight. Of course none of those 5 opponents were really worth a damn, but that must not matter to those fans. Lose to Auburn, and they’ll be screaming for his head again. Lost to Tech (which they will) and they will bet trying to literally remove his head themselves.

Ask your dad if he enjoys the tax hike u cause him.
When u guys do manage to get under my skill, I just make a large needed purchase, like my last lap top, in south Carolina because I like Clemson fans better than u.
That sales tax money goes to SC and so your dad gets stuck for more.
Clemson couple behind me at the game lived in Atlanta and were very nice before and after the game.
They welcomed me to go there next year.

congrats to techsters from a dawg
Schultzie,
What are you going to do to try and derail the Georgia success for this week? An Arkansas player took a chip shot at a Vandy player on a punt; are you going to call or email the SEC offices and demand that he be punished (like you did for the Ga players and Grantham)? Thanks for helping our defense against our biggest SEC rival, it was a lot of fun watching our defense struggle without 2 starters against a sub-par Florida team – too bad you couldn’t get Grantham suspended because he made some great adjustments at halftime against the Gators. Cheer up though Schultzie, maybe your Techsters can get the Dawgs in Atlanta this year or maybe Auburn gets them in Athens. I think we should be alright with NM St. this week unless you can dig up something.

When Tech’s offense is running on all cylinders, there are not many teams in the country who can stop it. And if a team can’t stop it, then that means that team’s offense doesn’t get a whole lot of time on the field to make up for what their defense can’t do? Can Tech be beat? Of course, they can. But the better the offense executes, the harder it is to beat them.

Time of possession last night — Tech 39 minutes; Clemson 21 minutes. Clemson wasn’t overrated; they were fast and strong. But Tech’s defense came alive last night and with the offense executing those CPJ Death Marches, it was a thing of beauty to behold.

Which of you yahoo Rats will come back on this board to say how awesome GT is if it loses to Clemson or as you write Clempsun or Clemsuck?
I am curious b/c you would think that GT fans, who claim be more intelligent than Dawg fans and alum and rarely show any level of athletic prowess when outside, note i am excluding any event using Wii, Xbox and Playstation, would not turn into typical ACC/SEC football fanatics.
GT played better and won the game. They were not like they were the last two games.
Clemson played poorly, looked lost with Groh’s blitzes and turned the ball over… again nothing like they have done over the previous 8 games.
The option befuddles many, not Georgia for some reason, but certainly Clemson.
I hope a rematch becomes reality on dec 3rd.. We can then throw out the outliers and watch teams play as they have this year.
But then again, GT has much more to do in order to make it to a Dec 3rd rematch with Clemson.
Good luck, Rats.

So CLEMSON is Overrated? Well i think Boise St is very overrated and the Dawgs couldn’t touch them. USC is good but how good? so UGA played 2 good but slightly overrated teams and LOST. TECH plays an Overrated team, Wins but it shouldn’t matter?
Get it coming DAWGS. If Auburn beats the dawgs what will that say since CLEMSON beat Auburn?
ps. Arkansas is Hugely OVERRATED, but UGA doesn’t even get to play them either.

If Tech plays in and loses the ACC championship game, then so be it. Last night Tech played like they did the first 3 1/2 games. None of the mutts thought much about those first games because the competition was admittedly not very good. But Tech showed last night that when the offense clicks, and when the defense plays hard, they are capable of beating just about anybody (NOTE: I said “just about anybody.” We are not the best team in the country, nor do any sane Tech fans believe that we are)
