Weekend Predictions: Deja vu time (Gators over Dogs)

9

Before we get to the SEC East, the Republican primary of college divisions where everybody looks like a 4-4 team with two soundbites, a new tax plan and reservations for the Liberty Bowl, this just in: We’ve officially gone to hell.

With the holiday shopping season just around the corner, Mattel is preparing to launch, “Tokidoki” Tattoo Barbie in the U.S. I am not making this up. She has pink hair, is covered with tattoos around her neck and arms and has another just above her Barbie Buttocks (copyright?) that reads, “Ken” (in a heart).

tattooedbarbie[1]Mattel has come under criticism but says the doll is targeted at adult collectors, not children, which is why we can also soon expect Wowsa Mondo Implant Barbie, Underground Kim Kardashian Video Barbie (with rapper), Strung Out Lindsay Leg Chains Lohan Barbie, and, a sidekick: the Ha Ha How Does It Feel To Have That Tie Rod Jammed Into Your Forehead Ndamukong Suh Psychotic Ken doll (candy Thorazine in grape and cherry flavors included).

See? You just can’t count on anything any more.

Oh wait. It’s Georgia-Florida week. Never mind.

I know. This is the year, right? Aaron Murray is better

tattoo_barbie[1]

That "Indonesia" branding had to really hurt.

than whatever remains of John Brantley.

The Georgia defense is better than Florida’s.

Chris Rainey? He hasn’t been a threat since Gainesville police revoked his texting privileges. (”Time To Die…Hello? Hello?”)

Will Muschamp? Look at those eyes. We never trusted him!

And the Dogs have won five in a row!

Whatever.

Let’s look at this. The teams have one common opponent so far: Tennessee. They both won. Whoop.

Florida got boat-raced by Alabama and LSU. Like Georgia wouldn’t?

Georgia’s four SEC wins have come over teams with a combined conference record of 1-15. Murray has been average. The defense has been better but will be missing two starters (Kwame Geathers, Shawn Williams) for suspensions in the first half, and can’t really be sure what they’ll get from two other starters just back (Cornelius Washington, suspension; Alec Ogletree, broken foot). Also, Malcolm Mitchell likely won’t play.

Florida’s average. Maybe below average. But this is close enough to a push. Sorry, but a push ain’t pushing me over to the anemic side of 3-18.

Florida is getting 3. I’ll take the points. And the upset. Gators win.

Saturday Value Menu

(Add fries and a used car from Houston Nutt for 99 cents)

Paul Johnson is not taking losing well.

Paul Johnson is not taking losing well.

Clemson at Tech: The Jackets have three offensive touchdowns in the last nine quarters. I think it’s clear Al Groh needs to fire Paul Johnson and hire a new offensive coordinator. Tevin Washington’s confidence looks shot and sources say Johnson is miserable, which explains the stockades on the sideline at practice. Clemson covers 3½.

South Carolina at Tennessee: Your Poultry update: Marcus Lattimore is done, Stephen Garcia is plotting his next career move at Barbizon, and Alshon Jeffery seems as relevant as Gummo Marx without his brothers. But it’s Tennessee. The Vowels have been outscored 95-25 in their last three games, and Derek Dooley wonders, “Why did I give up law again?” Gamecocks cover 4.

Mississippi at Auburn: I just learned Houston Nutt has a $6 million buyout. Do they not offer classes in high finance in the land of Faulkner? Nutt’s SEC losing streak runs to 11, and Auburn covers 11.

Arkansas at Vanderbilt: The Commodores were painted as dirty against Georgia and last week had to apologize for blasting music over the loud speaker and drowning out the Army alma mater. So now they’re un-American. The Vandy bad boys. If this keeps up and they may be allowed back in the SEC. Hey, can anybody cut-block Bobby Petrino? Arkansas wins but give me Vandy and 10.

Georgia State at Texas-San Antonio: It turns out the Longhorn Network does exist. It’s carrying this game. I believe GSU-UTSA comes on right after, “In The Kitchen With Fred Akers” and “Texas A.D. DeLoss Dodds At The Yalta Conference: Revisionists History, Brought To You By ESPN.” No line. Panthers make it two straight.

NFL Snack Pack

Lions' defense warms up for this week's game. That's Suh on the left.

Lions' defense warms up for this week's game. That's Suh on the left.

Paper Lions at Broncos: It’s Matthew Stafford vs. Tim Tebow. That’s timely. (Advice to Lions: If you score, don’t empty the bench and celebrate in the end zone. Leaves a hangover.) Stafford is banged up and struggling to hold together an imploding team with defense of cretins. Was that Suh robbing a blood bank this week? Take the 3 but Denver wins in an upset.

Cowboys at Dream Team: Philadelphia’s Asante Samuel ripped management, saying they’re “playing fantasy football.” Hah! Nobody in my league would’ve been dumb enough to sign Ronnie Brown. Take Dallas and 3½, and in an upset.

Patriots at Steelers: Tom Brady vs. Pittsburgh: 6-1, 14 touchdowns, three interceptions. Check? New England covers 3.

Dolphins at Giants: Miami’s quarterback depth chart: Matt Moore, J.P. Losman. My eyes! My eyes! Giants cover 10.

Toteboard

The safest way to double your money is to fold it over once and put it in your pocket.”  — Kin Hubbard

footballbettingLast week (slightly cloudy): 11-1 straight up, 8-4 against the line.

Overall (Real. And spectacular): 70-25 straight up; 61-33-1 against the line.

“Sack Schultz” contest: Last week’s winners: Local–Mitchell Hunter (13-2) of Sharpsburg, GA. National–Olivia Trebino (14-1) of Pomona, Ca. I’m slipping. Badly. Not entered? Click here for details.

Can’t argue with your logic. I just hope you are wrong like you were in picking UT to beat us.

I don’t get your Lions pick. Tebow doesn’t have the supporting cast he had at Florida and willie Martinez is nowhere on the sidelines or in the booth for the Lions. Denver might not score.

Can’t disagree with the GT-Clemson pick – Tevin look like a deer in headlights. Needless to say I am a bit worried this weekend turns into a whooping.

But, I have to disagree with UGA-UF pick. UF is not good. No running game. No real quaterback. If UGA can’t beat them this year, they never will. UGA wins in close one.

I think GT keeps it close. Clemson has had trouble defending the option and mobile QBs this year, and PJ probably has a couple trick plays up his sleeve. But, so long as Clemson doesn’t turn the ball over a lot, I think Clemson ultimately wins by about a TD.

On paper, UGA should beat UF without much effort. But, history suggests that UF stuns UGA… again.

You speak of the schedule, it rotates every year and not sure that the Dawgs can change that. An SEC win is a WIN. Uga is ready to take this game back for many years to come JEFF! They (UF) has a coaching staff that is about to explode and this game will put them in the position to blow up. This Junkyard D will be something that they are not used to seeing in UGA since CBV left. Can not wait to hear your excuse come Sunday!

The Georgia fans who are picking the Dawgs are saying close game. Nope, this thing has Georgia blowing out the Gators written all over it. UGA has the better team. Florida is operating under new schemes while UGA has a coaching staff in place for many seasons. UGA is the hot team, they are getting better every week, and Jeff, its all about defense. And UGA is playing some outstanding defense. The transformation under Grantham has been amazing. And lets be honest, GA is the hungry team. I get a sense they have had it with the beat downs in Jacksonville, and they will come out with fire in their eyes. I don’t care how many points Las Vegas gives us, the Dawgs destroy the Gators this year and march to Atlanta as the SEC east champs.

“… and struggling to hold together an imploding team with defense of cretins.”

They lost two games in a row. This is a little much. Suh and Avril do need to cut back on the pre-game eight balls, but two weeks ago this was a Lions team “built the right way” with “weapons on all sides of the ball,” etc.

Lions win big over Timmy. Did you watch the freakin game in Miami? That was 57 minutes of HORRID quarterback play, and the Lions D isn’t going to head to the locker room with 3 minutes on the clock.

Dawgs win if they stay of of their own way. Muschamp is horrible, and won’t be in Florida long. They, unlike too many teams I support, don’t tolerate losing at all, and Muschamp had better be renting in Gainesville. If there was ever a time Georgia could right the ship for a few years, this is it. Muschamp=Ray Goff in coaching ability, though he is a world champion blow-hard and all around jackass. So embarrassed that he played at UGA. He should be embarrassed at HOW he played at UGA, come to think of it.
Suh will thrash touchdown Jesus (and I will love every minute of it) and Detroit will get back on track. Denver is only killing its own future with every win they eek out with mediocre Timmy at qb. Suck for Luck, boys…
Hope Tech upsets Clemson. Loved CPJ when I was up at Navy, but he’s gotten a little full of himself lately. Still hope he manages to knock Clemson down a few over-rated notches.

By many of the predictions made by the bloggers on this Schultz article one realizes very quickly why you guys are not professional book makers or gamblers, and for those who are…I hope your spouse holds the titles of your homes, vehicles and personal property.

The problem with predicting the scores of your favorite teams is you have to throw out emotion in your selections. Having no alliance to any team playing this week I will do it for you.

UGA and Florida.

Georgia has played 7 teams..3 with winning records and they lost to two of them. UGA has to prepare for 3 quarterbacks and one of those who has not played in several weeks. Florida is hungry and Muschamp is hungry for a win against his former team.
FLorida 33
UGA 24

Clemson and GT

Clemson is an offensive Juggernaut and Tech is spinning its wheels. Clemson dominates.
Clemson 49

South Carolina and Tenny..

Kent Taylor gave his verbal commitment to UF today over, among other schools, Georgia. UF now has 2 of the top 4 tight ends in the country committed for 2012. These are the players that Muschamp needs, but aren’t on UF’s roster now because they didn’t fit into Meyer’s spread option. This roster is still a square peg in a round hole for what Muschamp wants to do (and a limited roster at that – only 72 scholarship players right now). Muschamp will struggle until he gets his guys in, but I think he’ll do well once he gets another class or two on the field.

ARDawg,
True. But do you really think Richt will be able to string more than one in a row? He hasn’t managed to beat UF when they’ve been really good yet. His 2 wins came against a lame-duck in Zook, a rebuilding year under Meyer and “possibly” Muschamp’s first year? If he can’t beat this yer’s version of the Gators, then he may as well give up.

JB

Beast, evening friend. Been reading Gators post this week. This is what I’ve concluded. They are setting themselves up to be beat, put positioning themselves to say if we win. Dawgs can’t beat our worst team in 20 years with a rookie head coach. Try to cover both bases in their mind. On paper, we should win…Last time I checked, they still play on grass. Who knows. Good luck.

Beast I whole heartedly agree with you. If he doesn’t beat them this year I think the decision will be made for him. He could win this one and lose the next two and they’d keep him around. No, I think we win this one. Even if we do, the 2 in a row is certainly a challenge. Your guys are splintered and scattered with no identity yet. Hopefully they don’t find it this week. We’re a better team but that doesn’t mean much in J’ville

I think we’ve already found our identity this year. Too much talent and speed for inferior opponents but not able to beat a quality opponent. I was pretty disgusted after the Auburn game. Beast, in addition to his health, I think that his team can lose focus and composure when he gets carried away. I love his intensity, but he needs to control it better. The Auburn punt no-call was really weak, but bad calls happen, and he needed to direct his energy toward getting his defense ready to keep Auburn from scoring instead of yelling at the refs. He’s just 40, and I think it will come with time and experience. He’s building a very nice class – I can understand why guys would want to play for him.

Jeff, thanks. You’ve helped our cause immensely. Love your track record in big Georgia games this year. You’e been wrong just about 100% of the time.

Predictions are like…well, anyway, we all have them. So here are mine:

1. Georgia 24, Florida 17. The Georgia defense plays with an attitude and gets credit for the W. Brantley’s return is short-lived as he folds up like a cheap suit under pressure from Ogletree, Washington and Jones. Driskell runs like a deer (in the headlights) and eats a little Jacksonville turf. And Demps and Rainey, fast as they are, don’t see much daylight as they are hit repetitively in the backfield, spinnning like tops as they are inexorably ground into oblivion behind the Gators’ poor offensive line. Murray redeems himself for last year’s turnover-fest by playing like a man possessed. And Crowell, who is pretty darn fast in his own right, takes a screen pass to the house.

2. Clemson 42, Tech 24. The Tigers don’t have a great defense–but they don’t need one. Tech has a bad defense–and suddenly cannot throw the ball anymore. That’s a bad combo for the Jackets–and the beginning of a stretch of four losses in five games. Jackets end the season at 7-5 after starting 6-0. That’s UGA-LY!

3. Even without Lattimore, South Carolina tops UT. The Vols suck. The Cocks will lose at Arkansas and against Florida, but not this week.

4. Auburn wallops Ole Miss. Arkansas beats Vandy–but not by much! And the other games don’t matter a whole bunch.

One pass to the backs against Vandy? Sheesh! Crowell can catch but dont send him 20 yards down the field firt Bobo! let him catch it within a few yards of the line with room ro run! Bozo! Especially if Mitchell doesnt play. You have wasted not throwing short to him all year. You do it so little, Murray cant make a good pass to him! UGA wins. Why? Because we they will NOT turnover the ball 3-4 times Saturday, like they have the 3 past years and just gave the games away! Maturity by Murray, better running game and MUCH better defense than last year. Dawgs win. Schultz loses.

Tenn. might win and I think Ole Miss just might be ripe to upset Auburn this week.

Auburn has been “charmed” at home in games they should have or could have lost all season. OTime to send the despicable Auburn fans home losers and heartbroken just like they have dome to 3 other teams this season. Their luck ends and its all downhill the rest of the season. Just like Tech.

Ole Miss just played Bama and Auburn’s defense is no Bama, their offense neither. Very close game I think. Auburn does not cover 11 and might get upset. I call the upset. Ole Miss is due IMO….

Word on sports talk today was if Mark Richt is let go at UGA( especially is he loses to UF) that UNC will be very quick to scoop him up. If CMR and the dawgs pull out a win and go on to beat Auburn he stays and UNC will rapidly approach Malzahn at Auburn as their new AD was the AD at Tulsa when Gus was there and he wants an explosive team on both sides of the ball.

The problem with coaches is that if a coach is an offensive guy he will go out and heavily recruit offensive weapons and take good athletes and put them on offense leaving the defensive coaches to work with what they have.

We can look at Mike Leach and Nick Saban as examples; Mike Leach recruited heavy offensive skill guys and he scored a ton of points but had little to no defense. Coach Saban knows that defense wins and he is a defensive guy an puts his best players on defense and gives the offense a run first mentality and enough weapons to keep a defense honest. The ACC is mostly an offensive league and when VT had great defenses and pretty good offenses they won the league and competed on the national level. The same can be said about FSU while CMR was on the offensive staff. They had great offenses and great athletes on defense, but the offense is what won the big games for them.

Now Jeff……..Had you informed your readers that you had tossed a coin to arrive at a conclusion for Saturday’s Cocktail contest….I would have granted you the summary respect that is deserved in choosing such an undeniably ‘good as any’ method for picking this game…..When are you and other silly sports writers going to finally learn that predicting the outcomes of ballgames involving relatively similar talent as with UGA and Florida is a proposition that’s best settled with a coin toss. While it’s true that the recent history favors the Gators…….that history is largely “irrelevant”….for this years game. Given the more similar talents of these teams in this years contest…….a toss of the coin would be ….by far ….the best solution for attempting to pick a winner. All the other factors you mentioned are but banal tripe that is repeated early, often, and I might add thoughtlessly by similar vapid minds who prefer the “usual shop-worn arguments”….whether they actually hold merit ….or not. In this case…this year…they don’t…….If I pick the Gators….it will be because the Gators were favored in a simple coin toss…….not for any phony, banal and culturally shop-worn reasons. I did toss a coin……and the Gators were favored in my coin toss……which means………..absolutely NOTHING! We’ll know who wins …..after the game.

I am a huge dawg fan and not a naysayer, but I’ll believe a UGA win when the clock hits zero & we have the lead. Unfortunately, I think this has ‘break out game’ written all over it – for Florida. Brantley will likely be back, the 2 FL backs have not have a breakout game yet and they are due, and the UGA defense showed some very glaring weaknesses against Vandy that we have not seen previously. When UGA has the ball, I have zero confidence in Boo Boo to keep the pressure on a team to the piont where a late slip up wouldn’t put FL back in it. And if it comes down to the UGA offense having to run out the clock to secure a win – forget about it. If it comes to the UGA defense having to make a stop to keep FL from going ahead for the win – well, I tink they are capable, but the track record on this is not on our side. My hearty is for UGA but if I were a beeting man, I’d have to take FL & the point as much as I hate to say it. CB

I hear and understand all the whining and hand wringing about this rivalry’s rough recent past, losing when we could’ve, should’ve won, our recent performance in the Vandy game, UF gets their quarterback back, we are missing 2 starters for 1st half, disturbing trends, stats, etc, etc.

This game will restore faith in your Dawgs, DawgNation. CMR is righting this ship, and it all comes to light this weekend on the banks of the St. Johns River…..

UGA wins this one with the rare opportunity for all Dawg fans to do some celebrating with time still on the clock, do not doubt it! Believe in your Dawgs and GATA!

GO DAWGS!!!

Thanks Schultz, we needed that…with all those ‘other’ pickers going for Georgia – other than the ex-Gator guys like Palmer and Chris whatshisname – even I was beginning to get a bit uneasy. But now we’ve got your, predictable, pessimistic, pissant pick against us and things can get back to where they need to be going in.

As others have said, wait a minute, it was me, whatever Florida thinks about being ‘in our heads’ will be altered just as soon as we knock some of their d*cks off. This ain’t yo’ mamma’s defense as Messers Rainey and Demps and Brantley, et. al., will find out. Now if we can keep young Mr. Murray from giving the ball to ‘em at critical times, a new streak will have begun and Muschamp will have to postpone his ‘prediction’ about beating Georgia – maybe forever after the ‘FireMuschamp’ sites spring up.

So thanks again…looking forward to your Sunday or Monday crow-eatin’ piece.

Gimme some kool-aid. I see a breakout game but it isn’t going to be Florida. Big John Jenkins is going to Nick Fairly Brantley , Demps and Rainey in the first half so hard they lobby Slive for Geathers by the second quarter. Georgia offensive player makers, Murray, Crowell, Charles and Marlon Brown redefine offensive production in the Ga/FL game. It won’t be pretty for you Gators. Drink plenty early, often and strong. It’s going to be a long day

If the Dawgs play as they are capable of playing then we will win, but if Coach Bobo continues to go away from the things that are working and has no clue as to the flow of the game. Then in all likely hood we will lose. This has always from the very beginning been a streaky series- with each team going on a streak where they have dominated the series for a long time. Hopefully we can turn this back around and start winning and dominating again. IMHO Coach Richt should be 7-3 instead of 2-8 against the Gators but something seems to happen every year where we play tight and we have found a way to lose. So hopefully like in 2007 this team will go out and play loose and just have fun beating the Gators.

However, UGA’s only two losses of the season are to two top 15 teams with a combined record of 13-1. Because they stood toe-to-toe with both THOSE team, (excluding turnovers and poor special team play), the dawgs should be in good shape. Barring any special team lapses, or pick 6’s from Murray, UGA should roll. 38-17

He pointed out earlier this week that Muschamp doesn’t like to give out info on the status of injured players, but he was very talkative about Brantley’s health and his ability to play. I think one or both of our young QBs will be very good in the future, but right now they are bewildered 18 year olds. If Brantley is out, then we’re in deep trouble – that’s why I think he went with that score.

*****************
Are you on drugs, Tony? We haven’t blown these guys out since the mid-80’s….

And you see reason now to think we will? Just wishing/hoping/praying isn’t gonna make it happen. We’ll be lucky if we just win the game.

And I don’t think we will, not with how undisciplined and inconsistent we’ve been in EVERY SINGLE GAME this year. There is zero reason to expect anything other than our normal bitter disappointment.

Why set yourselves up for it? Spare yourselves and just be giddy AFTER the game if we do somehow pull one off.

Predicting us to win, much less blow them out is just dumb where I sit.

You dont know for sure and Florida still has to prepare for him to be in the game. Rumors from the trainers are that he will play, but most likely very limited, maybe even a decoy. Unless he had a set back yeterday in the walk through or a side training session he should be in there.

AR, I tend to agree – I don’t think he’ll be able to play many significant snaps tomorrow. I don’t know how good Brantley could be. He was a fish out of water in Urban’s system, but he was growing under Weis’ system (he threw for 190 in the first half against Bama before he got hurt). He’s not the second coming of Wuerffel, but I wouldn’t underestimate the impact that he would’ve had on this team if he’d stayed healthy.

Ray Goof’s Hat,
I think we would be 5-2 right now if Brantley had not been injured. We would have still lost to Bama and LSU, but I truly believe we would’ve beaten Auburn. They are going through some serious growing pains after losing some great players from last year’s NC squad. That said, no excuses…..you play with who you’ve got like all teams have to do. Injuries are part of the game and it just so happens we had the one player injured that we couldn’t afford to.

Beast, I’ve thought the same thing – we would’ve had a much better shot at Auburn. Without Brantley, there is no legitimate passing threat and you can’t run with 8 in the box. Although having Bama and LSU in back to back weeks and then traveling to the Plains on the third week would be tough for any team.

But it will only take a few more years for Florida to overcome Georgia’s dominance in the 30’s and 40’s. You know, Minnesota used to be a national power. The Golden Gophers won multiple national championships in the 30’s and 40’s. No one is denying that it happened or that they count. They’re just not very relevant anymore.

Both UGA and the Gators have a lot of uncertainty about them this year, but UGA has played a lot better lately, and they have a more consistent core at HC and QB as well as overall better talent. UGA should win this with little problem, barring too many mistakes.

Until Tech beats UGA two years in a row – - or at least wins another bowl game – - Tech fans should sit down, be quiet, and watch how major college football is played in the SEC. Maryland loses to Temple, yet beats Miami who easily beats Tech….

Gators, pissed after losing 3, win big. But we still keep CMR.

Muschamp deep down, loves UGA. His only love for Fl is the paycheck. You can tell how uncomfortable he is when he has to talk about loyalty to FL. He is our secret weapon. Lizards Benedict Arnold, if you “Will”. Fl will be calling for his head as UGA starts it’s own winning streak TODAY.

One down one to go. Remember, I said, The Obvious: You have picked two games wrong, at least;
1. The Eagles will beat the Cowboys.
2. The Dawgs will feast on Gator Soup. You might want to try a bowl of it yourself.
Since I just flew back to the ATL from Las Vegas and did so o well on the Dawgs and others yesterday, no sense in giving any back on the Eagles and the Cowboys.
