Here's Ndamukong Suh grabbing Matt Ryan's facemask, not that there's anything wrong with that.
(UPDATED: 10:40 p.m. with White comments.)
Please excuse Ndamukong Suh if he is not well-versed in what’s considered acceptable behavior for an NFL player. Turns out, he may not even know the names of many NFL players.
Suh, the Detroit Lions’ defensive tackle who reportedly taunted injured Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan Sunday, fired back Monday, telling Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press: “Do I need Rodney White’s respect? No. Leave it at that.”
In fairness to Suh, he’s right. He doesn’t need Rodney White’s respect, whoever Rodney White is. The assumption is he doesn’t care about earning Roddy White’s respect, either.
This all started Sunday when White,Todd McClure and other Falcons said they heard Suh, Cliff Avril and possibly other Detroit linemen taunting Ryan when he was lying on the field. One of White’s comments: “Like 92 [Avril] was kicking [Ryan’s] feet, saying, ‘Get him off the field.’ We don’t do stuff like that. We don’t rally over guys when they get hurt. It was just inappropriate behavior. I mean, [Suh said] ‘Get the cart’? Are you serious? Come on. When you compete, you never want to see a guy get hurt.”
Neither Avril nor Suh were available for comment after the game. Avril took to Twitter Sunday night to deny the accusations: “Come on. I’m not in the business of hurting not one guy on the field… I would never taunt anyone on an injury.”
Suh’s comments Monday came from Burkett’s Twitter site. He reaffirmed what most know — that he doesn’t seem to care what anybody thinks about him — and he also took a shot at Falcons’ offensive linemen. The comments:
• Referring to the fact Ryan tripped over Falcons tackle Will Svitek: “To me it’s karma. For all the bad stuff they’ve done in the past, their offensive lineman hurt their own QB. So I’ll leave it at that”
• His quasi-denial: “I’m not even near their quarterback so how am I going to trash talk somebody that has a medical staff that’s all around him?”
• The slap: “Do I need Rodney White’s respect? No. Leave it at that.”
• He also called it, “He said/she said.” As Burkett noted, Suh never identified the “she.”
UPDATE: Here are some comments from White to the NFL Network, via ProFootballTalk.com:
“I mean I don’t really have much to say about what [Ndamukong Suh] said. I just know he’s going to say whatever he wants to say, but we know what they said. We were standing right there in the huddle, we saw when he went down and that’s before the medical staff got there that they said was in front of the play. . . .
“I know Suh said what he said. He said, ‘Go get the cart for him, get him out of here.’ He knows he said that and we’re not going to go back and forth about what he said-she said. And then he’s going to say it was karma for what we’ve done in the past when their quarterback gets hurt on the last play of the game and they have an MRI today.”
OK, this is a he said/he said. But Suh had been gaining a negative reputation in the league even before Sunday. So if this is a credibility contest, he’s probably going to lose.

Ndamukong Suh is full of it, and the Detroit Free Press protects the Lions players like crazy. One writer said maybe Matt Ryan didn’t hear the taunts from Suh and Cliff Avril “because he was moaning.” The same writer said no one was around Ryan but Falcons training staff.
His own paper contradicts that with a photo in their game gallery of Ryan on the ground and no one but Lions players standing around him.
Wonder why Suh wasn’t available to the media after the game when you and other Atlanta folks were in town? Funny how he has something to say about it now that it’s just local media.

Whatever, they lost but thats what i expected, in my eyes they’re still the 0-16 lions, the 4-0 start to the season means nothing, good start but still “the lions”, come on!. Until the Lions get to the playoffs and get a win or just get to the playoffs even, maybe the win would be a little bit more neaningful. This win means nothing to me. Beat the Patriots, Packers and the Saints convincingly and then I’ll be impressed. And by the way, Im a die hard Falcons fan.

Not defending Suh, Jeff, but if White’s claims were true, the NFL would have video evidence regardless of cutaways or not. Just because cameras cut away from athletes doesn’t mean that they’re still not trained on them.
And ESPN would’ve ran it a hundred five times already, knowing their love of a good controversy.
I don’t doubt there was trash talking, but the “kicking at Ryan’s injured leg” stuff is false.

Why is this news on AJC.com when the Packers complained about all of the Falcon dirty hits after that game? The Packer quotes were headlined on national outlets like ESPN and NFL.com yet nary a word on AJC. I asked in a posting and D-Led quickly dismissed it, saying that people “complain about that stuff, like playing through the whistle, all of the time.” Yet suddenly Suh or some other Lion allegedly says something about Ryan and it’s a huge news event? I wouldn’t mind all of this coverage if AJC and D-Led had actually acknowledged the Packer complaints instead of completely ignoring them.

Double Standard — I really think this is less about comments about “dirty hits” — and D-Led is correct, you can find that in almost every locker room after almost every NFL game — than it is about what reportedly was said to Ryan while he was down. That’s the bigger issue. So there’s no double standard here. We’ve certainly reported at the AJC in the past about others accusing Dahl/Clabo for being dirty. And if any opposing player wants to mouth off after a game, I’ll be happy to give him a forum.

The reason why the Falcons have a lot of fair weather fans like myself is the fact that this Franchise has been operating for 46 years and giving us excuses…It long over due for this historic lousy Franchise to win the BIG ONE BABY!!!!!

I’m going to question the Falcons’ accusation of Suh & Avril’s taunts of Ryan. I have yet to see footage of them near Ryan as he was down. And if someone really pissed me off that much I would’ve popped him right then and there as opposed to being wimpy about it and taking it to the press afterwards. Man up and stand up for your QB as opposed to airing it out after the fact. I’m also sure more sh!t gets said in the heat of the battle too. What next? Someone hit me too hard is going to come out after the next game? Sure the Falcons won and they should walk away with that. This post game he said/ she said stuff is bush league at best. I’m appalled at the White & McClure accusations and just as equally appalled at Suh’s rebuttal- but I can understand Suh’s rebuttal a little easier because his reputation was on the line. If White or McClure wanted to handle it on the field and wanted to pop Suh, I wouldn’t have minded it at all. Man up and stand up for your team mate on the field- not in some post game press conference.

The problem is he and his family are very educated and Suh is very active in the community. If you go through his hits his reputation is very undeserved. Probably onloy 2 hits in his career should be held against, one being his first pro game in the preseasen when he almost ripped Mccoy’s head off. But understand the frustration of suh and Lions fans when fines are levied for hits like the one on cutler last year when he only pushed Cutler down too hard. Anyways it was a hard fought chippy game on both sides and as Lions fans were glad Ryan wasnt hurt seriously. I was kind of upset he went out because he wasnt playing good, but he came back on the 3rd down play and made the throw of the game. Anyways good luck Atlanta, we will be fine in detroit. Need to work on our O line and things will be fine.

What a punk. First off, the Lions are soft and it shows when they are crying about the O-line cutting people on film. I didn’t see any personal foul calls on the O-line. Second, yeah, you can hit the QB but can’t really stop the run b/c I think Micheal Turner just went for another 5 yards on you jokers. Third, I guess it is karma that YOUR QB went down too, huh? What a joke.

Homers! I’m not a homer for Detroit or Atlanta. Who cares – watch the game vs. what the players and the writers have to add. I highly doubt that what was said is reality – game time show’s it’s probably far from the truth. Think of Suh what you want but he rarely get’s upset with whatever other players say – but he was actually pissed during his interview. Who know’s but just because either player belongs to your “homer” team…..doesn’t mean you have to jump on the wagon. Stafford’s injury? Who cares…they played better the last 4 games of last year and he wasn’t playing.

Let me start of by saying it was a good win by the Falcons. It’s hard to get a win on the road against a decent team in the NFL. With that being said, Todd McClure I believe and Suh should be ashamed, but Roddy White no such much. Roddy is a push-off-artist with a big mouth. I will agree with a couple of things Roddy said: ‘We don’t do stuff like that. We don’t rally over guys when they get hurt.’

Let me get this right. The whole Atlanta offense is standing right there. Look at the video Todd McClure is standing right behind an injured Matt Ryan and at least four Atlanta players are between Suh and Avril (who are nowhere near Matt Ryan). They must of yelled loud enough for Todd McClure and Roddy White to both hear them. That means everyone heard them. Even Todd McClure’s microphone (yes let us hear what the mic picked up). So at least most of the Atlanta offense heard this and no one does anything? That right there tells me somebody in Atlanta is not telling the truth. Detroit’s O-line is not that impressive but guaranteed there is a fight if someone says that to them when Matt Stafford is on the ground. So either Todd McClure and Roddy White are not telling the truth or they are punks that do not stand up for their quarterback.
Also Suh was not saying that it was “Karma” that Matt Ryan got injured. He was saying it was “Karma” that it was the Atlanta O-line that was guilty of injuring him.
UPDATED: Hmm Roddy White already took back the “Kicking” part of the story. Hmm Maybe the reporter just is not that good and quoting people.

You’re such a homer. You keep citing this “kicking” at Ryan’s feet. You have a video up that clearly shows there is no kicking at Ryan’s feet. When this is unequivocally wrong, as you can clearly see in the video, how can you give *any* credence to the rest of the allegations? Because other people have had things to say? And the next guy of course will cite this “incident” which is already false as anyone can see from the video? Really, shame on you for being a homer, but double shame for perpetuating lies.

Last year when Fairley was running amok, I said that UGA should have run a chop block at Fairley on the next play after his first of many cheap shots on Murray. The message should have been clear. You take a cheap shot and we will return the shot. I bet it would have put an end to the crap from Fairley before he escalated it with each “turning of the other cheek”. The offensive lines in the NFL should treat Suh the same way.
Is it coincidental that both these thugs are on the same team?

It’s football!! Falcons linemen in the past have had a reputation of being dirty, but many O-Line men who play to the whistle have that “dirty” label. Suh has also had a reputation for being dirty also, so I think it is a wash. The issue I have with this whole thing is that White went to the media. Things like this happen all the time in football and other team sports. How do you handle it? You take it out on the field/between the lines. Remember “The longest yard” when Burt Reynolds kept getting hit late by the D-Lineman and he told his O-Linemen, “let him through next play”? That is old school football. If you have an issue with a guy, take it out between the lines (it doesn’t have to be dirty, you can get him back by your play), don’t run to the media or to twitter.

If a player has a problem with another player take it out on the field/between the lines, whether it is by beating him on a play, verbally telling/talking trash to him or (I hope it doesn’t have to be this way, but it happens EVERY game) getting him back in the pile. The latter is not meant to injure the player or put him out of the game, but it is meant to make them realize “Dude, I did not like what you did and there is a price to pay for your actions”. That is old school football. That is the way the game should be played. That is the honorable way to play football. DO NOT go to the media about it or go on twitter and whine about it.

The past is the past & whether the Falcon’s players were dirty in the past does not matter. Therfore, if they did they were wrong & there is no place in this league to taunt a man when he is down. Do any of you believe the Falcon players whom many are known to have high character would fabricate a story like this. Come on men, a blind man can see Suh, the misfits, & the coach have issues. They were exposed and the Falcons recieved the blue print from the 49ers. Now lets pass it to the other 31 teams.

Why are the Falcons discussing this with the press? Whether Suh was taunting or not, that seems soft to me. I watched the game and I watched replay footage of that sequence and what I didnt see (and what you should see) is some pushing and shoving (at the least) initiated by some Falcons players if the Lions were taunting. In pro sports, there are certain instances where it is ok to draw an unsportsman-like conduct flag, a flagrant foul or a five minute major. To me discussing issues like this in the media is akin to snitching because you know every Sunday Todd McClure taunts opposing D-Lineman and Roddy White DEFINITELY does some trash talking to defensive backs. That’s just a part of the game.

Any offensive line worth its salt would have killed a defensive lineman if he actually said that crap to their injured quartetback. Even the Lion’s O-line, which cannot open a running lane to save their life, would have started a full on brawl if the same was said to Matt Stafford. And you mean to tell me this Atlanta O-line heard this nonsense and waited until after the game to confide in a reporter about what was said. At best they are lying and at worst they are cowards for not sticking up for their quarterback. I mean really the video doesn’t at least show one of them confronting Suh or Avril. Come on man!

Suh was right to tell them to bring the cart. Ryan was rivoting in pain and needed medical attention fast. The fastest way to get him off the field and in the locker to be checked out by the doctor is with the cart. I gets tired of people twisting up what somebody say just to get to get a story. Suh was just trying to help out. 92 was checking Ryan feet to feel if he had feeling in them. He was not kicking them.
Rodney need to get the story straight before he mouth off. He need to focus more on catching the ball with his hand rather than his mouth.

Detroit acts like they are the NFL’s version of the 1990 “The U”. One major difference. “The U” never got smacked around at home, much less 2 weeks in a row at home. I said when Suh and Fairley went to the NFL that the thug act would not work. This is a job for these men and they cannot tolerate the cheap shots. The players will handle this on the field. Look for some chop blocks and low blocks to put these men in check.

Fairly is in the right place. He was controversial during his junior college transfer year at Auburn, now he is on this team. I give Detroit credit they are consistent in their job description.
I thought the real story was the miscommunication with Matt Stafford and his receivers. Quiet frankly I thought Stafford sucked or his receivers sucked on their pass patterns. They hardly looked Calvin’s way. I would be throwing that ball to Johnson even is tight spots. We are holding our breath hoping he doesn’t throw that direction and he was listening I guess.

Watch the lower right hand corner of the screen. At about 22 seconds, you can see #92 making kicking motions with his leg. He is behind Eric Weems and Garrett Reynolds. It is very brief, but can be seen if you look closely.
When I first read that Roddy made the accusations, I was a bit skeptical, but when I read that Todd McClure backed up what he said, I believed it. McClure is not one to “run his mouth” or get over-emotional.
I find it really idiotic of Suh to talk about karma when it’s HIS QB that came out of the game with an actual injury, while #2 seems to be fine. BTW, any Falcon fan who still dogs out Ryan after the toughness he has shown this season is insane and not a real fan. You may criticize his play, but never doubt his character and desire to win. He is no “choke” artist. I for one am proud he is our QB.

Show a little fire and stick up for your teammates, especially if an opposing player is KICKING your teammate when he is on the ground. Waiting until after the game to complain to the media is pretty gutless.

I dont care what ANYBODY says about Roderick “Roddy” “Rotten Apple” White’s performance this past sunday against the Lions. The catch that roddy made in the corner of the endzone was one of the 10 greatest catches in NFL history. I dont see how he was able to grip the ball and still maintain posession while keeping his feet in bounds. The only problem with roddy that bothers me is that his work ethic is poor and he is NOT A CONSISTENT PERFORMER. Roddy has the tools and the makings of a hall-of-fame calibre player. Roddy doesnt care and wants to be looked at as an ameteur and not a professional. That is the only thing that bothers me about White. How can in some games you look like such a polished professional (against the Lions) and in the games against Tampa and Green Bay, Roddy looked like he was didnt know what was going on. When roddy becomes a more consistent professional, hopefully sooner rather than later, Roddy will be on the way to becoming enshrined in Canton, Ohio as a hall-of-fame wide receiver.

IF Suh was standing there talking all this trash as he is reported to have been doing, then it is good to know that the OL has Ryan’s back. I didn’t see a single Falcon OL in Suh’s face telling him to shut his trap. Definitely not Roddy White or anybody else. You would think that they would stand up for their QB if the D was running smack. I can tell you this, if that had been Stafford on the ground and the D line was taunting him, Dominic Raiola would have been body slamming somebody.

MrCharlie, the QB you stated that could not pronounce the plays, took that sorry excuse of a team in Atlanta to an NFC Championship game, and was the first opposing QB in NFL history to win a playoff game in Lambeau field. And did it against Brett Favre. He did this with NO running game and their best WR was not even a WR, it was a TE. He also had his current team up 31-21 when he left the game this year with an injury playing your overrated QB in Atlanta.
The WR core, Running game, offensive line, TE and defense that Cryin Ryan CURRENTLY has in Atlanta is head and shoulders above what that former QB you talked about had when he was there. With all that, Ryan has NO playoff wins and threw a perfect pass to……TRAMON WILLIAMS before the half giving the Packers 7 “free” points in last years playoffs. The same Matt Ryan that got embarrassed AGAIN by the Packers on their home turf this year. Matt “Cryin” Ryan has done nothing for Atlanta thus far. Have him win a playoff game before you insult the only QB in the last 7 years to actually win a playoff game for the sorry a$$ Falcons.

So Weems #14, Snelling #44, Clabo #77, & Reynolds #75 all were the closest to Suh and Avril. Let’s get them on record saying this is true. Because McClure barely glances over toward their direction when Matt Ryan is down and Roddy White comes running in from the opposite side of the field. Why doesn’t this reporter ask the four closest Falcons to Suh and Avril if this is true. Obviously for McClure and White to hear this they would have needed to say it pretty loud. And so far we have Matt Ryan saying he didn’t hear anything. Suh and Avril denying it. Also Stephen Tulloch who is standing right near Avril and Suh denies it (detroitlions.com). Roddy White changing his quote from kicking to making a kicking motion and not identifying Cliff Avril. Merely saying he was not sure if it was #93 (on the sidelines) or #92. Todd McClure is the only witness for the prosecution. Even the two Lions (Jackson and Williams) you can see in the frame look pretty concerned about Matt Ryan. It is only a he said/she said story because some reporters are not doing their do diligence. Please let’s interview those four Falcons at least and put in a request to the NFL to get the audio from McClure’s mic. And please don’t tell me they do not want to go on record with saying it.

Why don’t you go up there and put on your butler’s outfit and serve him tea since you are so loyal? Only a clown deserts his team because one player SCREWED HIMSELF and COST HIMSELF his freedom. The rest of the NFL is laughing at old Falcons fans who still root for Vick no matter where he goes. They’re questioning your intelligence. Think about it: If the Eagles miss the playoff, Reid could be the THIRD coach he gotten fired in 10 years! Ryan may not be as talented, but you’ll never see him in handcuffs or embarrassing the franchise for doing something that dumb off the field. As far as I’m concerned, this situation involves a bunch of players on both sides who don’t have clean reputations. Suh, White, Avril, Falcons O-Lineman… all have been called out before for being dirty. The only person with a clean track record is Ryan and he hasn’t said anything, so this is really a non-story. Grow up Falcons, you won the game, but your team is a bunch of losers. Did Aaron Rodgers whine last year after the playoff game where he could have said “I think it was awful that Atlanta’s defense was so mean to us. We were hoping to score 62 and they let us only get 48.” No, he was content with 48-points. Football’s a rough sport played by tough people…grow a pair!!! You know what really grinds Heath Evans‘ gears? Whining! And the “sissification” of football.
The Falcons’ claims that the Lions’ Ndamukong Suh and Cliff Avril crossed the line in taunting Atlanta QB Matt Ryan while injured and grounded is an infraction on both counts. And on Tuesday’s edition of “Around the League,” Evans, who played fullback for 10 years in the NFL, let it be known exactly how he feels about the war of words between the teams.
“Who cares? This is the NFL,” Evans said. “It’s supposed to be dirty and nasty and aggressive. And it’s really supposed to be like Vegas on that football field. What happens in between those white lines stays in those white lines.
“Listen, my mom has been called names, my sister, my dog, anybody’s been called names on that field. Our league has become so ‘sissified’ and so weak at times, it really makes me disgusted.”
Basically, if there’s no crying in baseball, you’d better believe Evans won’t stand for whining in football. Which means the Falcons currently are on Evans’ list.
“As soon as I start to praise the Falcons for getting a good win on the road versus a tough team … they come out after the game and whine about this stuff,” said Evans, who spent his final two seasons with the NFC South rival Saints. “Matt Ryan was fine. Words are exchanged all the time on the football field. Why are you whining about this? You just got a huge win for a struggling football team … I don’t get it. I can’t stand the Falcons.”
