Ndamukong Suh fires back at ‘Rodney’ White, Falcons (UPDATED)

Here's Ndamukong Suh grabbing Matt Ryan's facemask, not that there's anything wrong with that.

Here's Ndamukong Suh grabbing Matt Ryan's facemask, not that there's anything wrong with that.

(UPDATED: 10:40 p.m. with White comments.)

Please excuse Ndamukong Suh if he is not well-versed in what’s considered acceptable behavior for an NFL player. Turns out, he may not even know the names of many NFL players.

Suh, the Detroit Lions’ defensive tackle who reportedly taunted injured Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan Sunday, fired back Monday, telling Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press: “Do I need Rodney White’s respect? No. Leave it at that.”

In fairness to Suh, he’s right. He doesn’t need Rodney White’s respect, whoever Rodney White is. The assumption is he doesn’t care about earning Roddy White’s respect, either.

This all started Sunday when White,Todd McClure and other Falcons said they heard Suh, Cliff Avril and possibly other Detroit linemen taunting Ryan when he was lying on the field. One of White’s comments: “Like 92 [Avril] was kicking [Ryan’s] feet, saying, ‘Get him off the field.’ We don’t do stuff like that. We don’t rally over guys when they get hurt. It was just inappropriate behavior. I mean, [Suh said] ‘Get the cart’? Are you serious? Come on. When you compete, you never want to see a guy get hurt.”

Neither Avril nor Suh were available for comment after the game. Avril took to Twitter Sunday night to deny the accusations: “Come on. I’m not in the business of hurting not one guy on the field… I would never taunt anyone on an injury.”

Suh’s comments Monday came from Burkett’s Twitter site. He reaffirmed what most know — that he doesn’t seem to care what anybody thinks about him — and he also took a shot at Falcons’ offensive linemen. The comments:

Referring to the fact Ryan tripped over Falcons tackle Will Svitek:  “To me it’s karma. For all the bad stuff they’ve done in the past, their offensive lineman hurt their own QB. So I’ll leave it at that”

His quasi-denial: “I’m not even near their quarterback so how am I going to trash talk somebody that has a medical staff that’s all around him?”

The slap: “Do I need Rodney White’s respect? No. Leave it at that.”

He also called it, “He said/she said.” As Burkett noted, Suh never identified the “she.”

UPDATE: Here are some comments from White to the NFL Network, via ProFootballTalk.com:

“I mean I don’t really have much to say about what [Ndamukong Suh] said. I just know he’s going to say whatever he wants to say, but we know what they said. We were standing right there in the huddle, we saw when he went down and that’s before the medical staff got there that they said was in front of the play. . . .

“I know Suh said what he said. He said, ‘Go get the cart for him, get him out of here.’ He knows he said that and we’re not going to go back and forth about what he said-she said.  And then he’s going to say it was karma for what we’ve done in the past when their quarterback gets hurt on the last play of the game and they have an MRI today.”

OK, this is a he said/he said. But Suh had been gaining a negative reputation in the league even before Sunday. So if this is a credibility contest, he’s probably going to lose.

“The bad stuff they’ve done in the past”? What sort of bad stuff has the O-Line done in the past? Ridiculous.

Has any of you actually watched the video? It shows that the ‘kicking on the ground’ claim was an outright lie. So that puts all of their other claims under suspicion as well.

That really sucks because the Falcons and Lions are my 2 favorite teams for this season. I said years ago that the Falcons should of traded half their draft to acquire Calvin Johnson.. who is the best reciever in the league. Love watching Stafford and CJ work together.

Ndamukong Suh is full of it, and the Detroit Free Press protects the Lions players like crazy. One writer said maybe Matt Ryan didn’t hear the taunts from Suh and Cliff Avril “because he was moaning.” The same writer said no one was around Ryan but Falcons training staff.

His own paper contradicts that with a photo in their game gallery of Ryan on the ground and no one but Lions players standing around him.

Wonder why Suh wasn’t available to the media after the game when you and other Atlanta folks were in town? Funny how he has something to say about it now that it’s just local media.

Who is Suh anyway? He surely isn’t Merlin Olsen or Rosie Greer or Deacon Jones. For that matter he is NO Reggie White or even Warren Sapp. He is living in his own glorified dream world.

Whatever, they lost but thats what i expected, in my eyes they’re still the 0-16 lions, the 4-0 start to the season means nothing, good start but still “the lions”, come on!. Until the Lions get to the playoffs and get a win or just get to the playoffs even, maybe the win would be a little bit more neaningful. This win means nothing to me. Beat the Patriots, Packers and the Saints convincingly and then I’ll be impressed. And by the way, Im a die hard Falcons fan.

Rodney White — I’m not verifying or denying kicking claim. But I don’t think there’s been a video of the entire three to five minutes (estimating) that Ryan was down. All of the ones I’ve seen had cut-aways.

Falcon fan but I have to agree; these guys weren’t around Ryan when he went down with the injury or was being tended to by the medical staff. Unless they said something in the larger group withing earshot of these guys, I’m having a hard time with this whole thing.

If Suh can remember a name like Ndamukong, you would think that Roddy would be no problem for him to remember. Then again, we’re not exactly dealing with the sharpest tool in the shed, but probably the biggest tool, no doubt.

Nobody kicked Ryan’s feet…but are you calling Todd McClure a liar? He backed up the comments heard by Roddy White. Todd McClure has more credibility in his little finger than that dirty cheap shot Suh has in his entire body!

Karma is a biatch Suh…the cart maybe coming for you one day then you’ll see who’ll get the last laugh.

Lastly..who is RODDY WHITE? An ALL PRO WR who led the league in catches last year…talk about getting your darn facts straight.

^^^^^^^ THIS RIGHT THERE is what’s up.

The blowhards on ESPN didn’t mention Todd McClure’s comments but he’s a widely respected VETERAN player and well known among O-Lineman in the league…RESPECT that.

Now that was some cheap shots up there on the Lions behalf……but thats okay you know…………….cause The Birds got the Big ” W” and handed you guys up there in Detroit another loss and the Win puts the birds back up on that ladder to the top………………so with that said I officially hand out the Detroit Lions crying Towels who are now known as the Detroit ‘ PussyCats “….now stick that in your Pipe and smoke it !

If Harvey Dahl was still a Falcon in yesterday’s game he would have been thrown out or had some 15 yard penalties at some point, he didn’t take crap from anyone, much less some media anointed “Baddest man in the NFL” 2nd year player. BTW…Ray Lewis wants to challenge that, he’s at least “killed a man”…what’s Suh ever done?

Not defending Suh, Jeff, but if White’s claims were true, the NFL would have video evidence regardless of cutaways or not. Just because cameras cut away from athletes doesn’t mean that they’re still not trained on them.

And ESPN would’ve ran it a hundred five times already, knowing their love of a good controversy.

I don’t doubt there was trash talking, but the “kicking at Ryan’s injured leg” stuff is false.

As for Suh, the dirtiest play was jumping off sides and nailing Ryan on a play that was clearly dead.
