Falcons punch out Lions, then rip Suh for taunting Ryan

DETROIT – It was less than an hour before the game when the Falcons emerged from a tunnel at Ford Field and found the entire Detroit Lions team standing there in the corner of the end zone. Mike Peterson, self-appointed drill sergeant in matters such as these, announced his team’s arrival.

“We had somewhere to go and they were in our way,” the Falcons linebacker said.  “I said, ‘We’re not going around them — we’re going this way [straight ahead].’ I said, ‘Get the bleepity bleep out of the way.’”

Some pre-rumble-like jawing ensued. There were no punches but it got uncomfortable enough that pipsqueak  game officials were forced to step in and separate a thousand pounds of humanity.

This was a good sign for the Falcons.

There hasn’t been a game this season when they didn’t slip a gear at some point. Sunday’s game was no exception. But what they gave us after the pregame stare down was easily their most impressive victory of the season and one of their edgiest.

They beat a 5-1 Detroit team, 23-16. They won on the road, where they hadn’t been impressive. They saw Matt Ryan leave the game with what appeared to be a serious knee injury, only to see him return and immediately fire a 49-yard completion to Harry Douglas. They saw Michael Turner leave the game with a dislocated finger, only to have someone on the sideline pop it back into place, after which Turner came back and broke off a 50-yarder.

They were smack-talked, taunted and treated to cheap shots by the Lions, and they won anyway. Ryan threw two interceptions but he made plays to win the game. The defense, maligned for much of this season, held the Lions without a third-down conversion until late in the third quarter. Calvin Johnson was relatively held in check (one touchdown).

After a loss to Green Bay had them reeling at 2-3, the Falcons have responded with consecutive wins over Carolina and Detroit, and have reason to feel good about things going into the bye week.

“This changes a lot,” said center Todd McClure. “We knew the type of team we had, we just hadn’t put it together. We weren’t perfect today. I know we had some penalties, but we overcame them. This win I think could catapult us for the rest of the season.”

The game started with some ill feelings. It ended that way, too.

When Ryan tripped over tackle Will Svitek with 10:13 left in the third quarter, he fell awkwardly and immediately grabbed his left knee. Tight end Tony Gonzalez said later, “I thought it was something bad. Anytime they come get you off the field, you think it’s something serious, especially when you have to go back to the locker room.”

As it turned out, Ryan missed only the first two plays of the Falcons’ ensuing possession, returning to throw a 49-yarder to Douglas on third-and-8 to set up a field goal that increased the lead to 20-9. (Coach Mike Smith on Ryan: “It just shows you the resolve and resiliency of this guy.”)

But when Ryan was down, writhing in pain, Lions defensive linemen Ndamukong Suh and Cliff Avril taunted him, according to the Falcons.

“I had respect for Suh before the game,” McClure said. “But when Matt was on the ground, the things he was saying and the trash he was talking was definitely uncalled for. There are certain things you don’t do. [He said], ‘Get the cart’ and several other things that I can’t repeat.”

Roddy White said, “I lost a whole lot of respect for 90 [Suh] today, and also 92 [Cliff Avril], the [bleep] they were doing when Matt got hurt. That was unacceptable. … Like 92 was kicking [Ryan’s] feet, saying, ‘Get him off the field.’ We don’t do stuff like that. We don’t rally over guys when they get hurt. It was just inappropriate behavior. I mean, ‘Get the cart’? Are you serious? Come on. When you compete, you never want to see a guy get hurt.”

Suh and Avril were not around to respond to the comments afterward. But it doesn’t seem like the kind of thing somebody would make up after a win.

Detroit has lost two straight since a 5-0 start. The Falcons have won two straight since 2-3. This could be a market correction. Certainly, the Falcons feel like it is for them.

“They were 5-1 and they were absolutely drinking the Kool-Aid over here,” White said. “We just wanted to get a win. We didn’t want to fuss and fight and argue with those guys, like, ‘Who’s the better team?’ We got the W. That’s all that matters.”

The sad part is that Jim Schwartz is probably thrilled with behavior like Ndamukong Suh and Cliff Avril exhibited. It’s been a while since I’ve seen so many personal fouls and cheap shots.

Lots of dirty plays by the Cubs today. How many personal fouls did they have?

On one was when they jumped off-sides (or were drawn, I don’t recall) and one of them flattened Ryan on a dead play. The TV guys seemed to think the PF was for one of the Cubs throwing the ball at Ryan, but I think it was the hit on a dead play.

Anyway a win is a win but the Falcons should have beaten them by a wide margin. Too many mistakes.

Good win.

But.

This team is going nowhere until Mike Mularkey is relieved of play-calling duties and they’re given to Ryan, who it is proven in every verifiable stat over the last two years to be a FAR better play-caller than he.

I don’t know if it’s because he has a better feel for the game, he knows what the offense needs, he can “feel” the rhythm, or what, but when Ryan is calling the plays, the Falcons move, they score touchdowns, the offense is more BALANCED, Turner’s YPC is exponentially better (maybe because opposing DC’s find Mularkey so utterly predictable, as do we fans?), the WRs YPC is better (maybe because Ryan doesn’t call nothing but stop routes (outs & curls) as Mularkey does (more slants), and most importantly, Ryan is NOT sacked nearly as much (maybe, again, because Ryan calls for more 3-step drops to quick slants and hot receivers, and he’s not as predictable).

Ryan has proven, in unassailable FACT, over the last two years, that he SHOULD be trusted to run the offense as Kelly once did, and as Manning and Brady do now, and when he does, the Falcons move, they score TDs, and they WIN.

It’s time to say goodbye to Mularkey and his refusal to throw screens, his refusal to create routes for the receivers that are designed to gain YPC (no more outs & curls!), his banal predictability, and his complete lack of feel for the offensive rhythm of this football team.

Mike Silver of Yahoo! Sports sees it. Pat Yasinskas of ESPN, who covers only the NFC South, sees it. Don Banks of SI sees it. Pete Prisco of CBSSports.com sees it.

Basically, any and all national writers who’ve watched the Falcons for the last two years KNOWS Ryan should be running the show, NOT Mularkey. Hell, even most Falcons players see it, in DOL’s piece, they said the Falcons NEED to run the no-huddle more. And no-huddle doesn’t mean hurry up. It means Ryan runs the show.

The Falcons can go far with Ryan running the show. They will go NOWHERE with Mularkey continuing to do so.

Does Mike Smith have it in him to do what’s right, to do what’s best for the team? Or will his Marty Schottenheimer philosophies get in the way?

That should be YAC. Mularkey refuses to use or create routes for receivers that gain YAC (yards after catch)… he calls for outs and curls almost exclusively, and you CANNOT have explosive plays like that.

Also, Mularkey is badly mismanaging the talents of Harry Douglas. Any competent OC would use Douglas as the Patriots use Welker. Match him up in the slot on the slowest LB, then call for a 3-step drop and quick slant pass, and let the WR do his athletic thang after the catch, gaining large yards off of short passes.

But Mularkey REFUSES to do this. He MUST go. It’s time. The Falcons are on the cusp of being great, and Mularkey continually pulls them back to average.

Wow, the Lions are vastly over rated and were exposed today.

No Running Game – Check
No effective play fake I formation – Check
No established number 2 WR – Check (and please don’t even try and mention Pettigrew here, show me more!)
No ability to stop ground and pound over 4 quarters – Last week San Fran, this week Falcons, even Dallas ran the ball on them.
A QB who is exhibiting the same flaws he had while QB at UGA (and yes I’m a big Dawgs fan but I’m objective). – Stafford, lacking touch, rushing decisions and still gunning inaccurate throws.

I’m proud of the way the Falcons refused to take the Lions crap (defensively) and came away with the win. It was an ugly game, but you can learn and correct mistakes, etc while having won a lot better than while having lost.

Lions – Frauds. Falcons – Just getting started!

PS…Where are all the Tampa Bay fans…talk about an enigma of a team….the Bucs got owned by the Bears today.

UGABugKiller – Back in the very late ’50s and through the ’60s there were often public discussions by some of the starting QBs at the time of whether they would be allowed to call their own plays. Tarkenton and Jurgenson are two that I recall. Many of today’s QB have the intelligence and experience to handle that job. For guys like Peyton Manning, the coaches in the boxes upstairs should be making suggestions, seeing tendencies that the QB could use to gain advantages.

O line was much tougher today against a supposed beast of a defensive line. Detroit is not handling the spotlight very well. I agree we have a hidden and under used weapon in Harry Douglas. Looked like he pulled up lame on the 49 yard reception. I think Mr Ryan showed what he`s made of today….but that won`t stop the detractors. He is getting hit because the offense sends EVERYBODY with a number other than the 50`s or 60`s out on a pattern to overwhelm the D. Go with it but we better learn to use ALL the targets available. Turner is looking better these days. We`ll see how he goes throught the year because the running game is imperative with this offense. Good win guys. Suh and his boys look awfully cheap now. Grumble Jeff. The Falcons won. I am okay with that. Roddy White made a TD catch worthy of a Pro Bowl receiver. I am okay with that. Future NFL Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez became the number two pass catcher all time in NFL history. I am really okay with that. The Falcon defense allowed 16 points to the Lions of Matt Stafford. I am okay with that. I am okay with the Falcon field goal kicker. What I am not okay with is failing to pick up a first down on a third and an inch then letting the Lions off the hook with a fourth down FG, the Falcon punter who could not earn a spot on a decent high school outfit, an offensive lineman that almost ends career of Matthew Ryan, Michael Turner runs for no or minus yards, idiot penalties well away from play which negate big yardage and Falcon defenders who drop easy as pie interceptions. Congratulations Mr Gonzalez. Way to return to action Matthew Ryan. It is obvious if MR goes out the losses will mount up quickly. Other than all that I am just plain okay. Have a nice one. :)

I ask you, Falcons fans, have you ever seen such terrible, predictable, weird, self-destructive play calling? The Lions, and esp. I had kinda been rooting for the Lions the last year or so, but not anymore… I hope they lose every game they play (sorry, Matt Stafford). I can respect anybody who plays the game the right way and respectfully, even if they are an arch-rival and I DESPISE the uniform (i.e., Tim Tebow at Florida, Drew Brees at New Orleans, Derek Dooley at Tennessee, Warrick Dunn when he was with the Buccaneers, etc.). But when you start acting thug, I immediately hate you, no matter if the rest of the world thinks you are cool — if you are a despicable human being (Roethlisberger, Kobe, LeBron, Clay Matthews, and now Suh), then I hope you shatter your leg in 100 places and can never play sports again. There is NO place for taunting an injured player in ANY sports league or ANY game situation…. PERIOD!!!

I’m still little skeptical about Matt Ryan and those int’s/ and that horrible play calling. But they have enough to win the remaining games. Can someone tell them to use Rodgers more, Please!!! Suh is immature, hopefully one day he’ll grow as a man. I’m liking what I see in the defense minus the penalties. The last two games Corey Peters has stepped up. Brent Grimes and Witherspoon are playing at a high level. The defense carried this team today. Matty Ice did some good things, but he’s too up and down in the course of a game. His accuracy needs to improve as the Falcons go forward. There were some big plays left on the field. The offensive line is playing with improvement- hopefully they can develope into a respectable line. Right now Turner and Gonzales are the Falcons bread and butter. If Mike Smith can convince the players to play mistake free football, the Falcons could be onto something.

It looks like the Falcons are finally getting their sea legs under them. I think we were dealing with some post-lockout rustiness early on. Those games against the Bears and Seahawks were just not what we’ve seen from Mike Smith-coached teams. We’re still committing too many penalties, but things are coming together. I’m pretty optimistic about the rest of the season.

Great win by our guys today. To go into our bye week with a winning record is huge and could be a turning point to a otherwise disappointing season. post of the year, I couldnt have said it better myself stendek

“Grumble Jeff. ”

That basically sums it up for me, Roddy and Gonzo both had some nice, nice catches. Matty Ice threw those 2 terrible interceptions, one right to the safetys numbers and one overthrowing Gonzo, subpar game once again. Turner had some nice runs, sandwiched in between those no gainers and 1 yarders, Weems had some nice returns negated by penalties, including a 104 yard td….inexcusable. Lots of penalties, I think at least 10. Grimes dropped pick was lame as all. Bosher is just terrible, I cant stand to watch another SINGLE ONE of his weak, horrid abominations of a “punt” that wobbles of his foot and goes like 30 yards downfield, he is a garaunteed field positon killer and needs to be released IMMEDIATELY!!! However, despite the penalties mistakes Matt Bryant and the Defense get the job done and get the co- game balls for this game. Bryant, what can I say this guy is as money and Pro Bowl as they get…29 straight now I believe…WOW. Peters, Nicholas, and Edwards were balling on defense today. Abe was decent as well…

It says a whole LOT about how tough these Falcons are once you remember what happened today. Total unprofessionalism from the Lions, who maybe expected a coronation of sorts. Not today, fellas.

And the referees were just as bad. A personal foul committed at the goal line which the referee himself broke up and yet–no call against the Lions?

Clearly, the Falcons are a much better team than the Lions. I was appalled when I heard the fans boo Ryan’s return. Classless.

The real story? The Lions have been exposed BIG TIME. We all know this game wasn’t nearly as close as the score suggests. The actual score? My count says 33-16 AT LEAST.

meant to say Weatherspoon was balling, not Nicholas, although Nicholas had a decent game as well, not to many bad plays on the defensive side today, if this offense and Matt Ryan EVER GET GOING, we COULD be GREAT, but that is a BIG IF the way matty ryan is playing….

Matt Ryan now has 9 td’s and 8 interceptions for the year, he is not moving forward, and if his play continues at this pace WE WILL NOT MAKE THE PLAYOFFS….thats the sad truth. Luckily, we have some awesome momentum after winning 2 in a row going into the bye, we get a bye week to rest and heal our guys, then go to Indy to play a weak team without their leader, where we should feast and go to 5-3 and really start rolling…one week at a time

Seriously is there a better field goal kicker in the NFL right now than Matt Bryant? I mean there are only a few comparbles to the type of zone he is in right now, i think one more will be 30 straight for Bryant. He will get another pro bowl and he deserves it. He is only 36, which for a kicker means he could have 5 or 6 more great to good years left if he conditions himself well. My mouth is watering at the thought of having a solid, reliable, almost automatic kicker in the playoffs for years to come. It really helps, just think New England and Indy when they had Vinatierri and Vanderjagt…

There was a time when thugs like Suh weren’t allowed to play the game. But that was also when the game was the game. There were no long haired pretty boys with their dreds, platts or locks flying out from under and behind their helmets. The game was played on grass so there weren’t all these ridiculous knee and ankle injuries. If you got injured, you were hurt. The game had a flow to it. There was no strategizing when to use a penalty, or instant replay or challenges. Full backs may not have been fast but, they could carry 3 or 4 of these little stick legged defensive backs in the game now, all the way to the back of the end zone. Now, we have to watch some simian like dance in the end zone from some showboat who gets paid a s__t load of ducats to get to the end zone. Oh yeah…you’re bad!! What a way to KILL a once very respected sport. Friggin homos. I’ll NEVER watch (Pro) Football again.

Falcons put up 23 on one of the , if not the, toughest defense in the league. I will take it and I’m not worried about the overthrows, it will be corrected. They often look bad on tv, but more than a few were timing routes and the receiver just got checked or bumped and missed being in position by a hair. The one thing We never have to worry about with Matty ICE is him melting down over a few bad passes. Stafford has a great arm, but when he got flustered today you could see him, and Coach Billick even noted, he starts to force things too much..thinking arm strength will just make up for it..it doesn’t most times..exempli gratia, Brett Favre

LIKE I SAID AGAIN FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO STILL THINK MATT RYAN IS A GREAT QUARTERBACK THINK AGAIN!!! HE IS A ABOVE AVERAGE SUB-PAR QUARTERBACK, THAT WILL MANAGE THE GAME WITH A FEW GREAT PASSES, NOTHING COMPARED TO AARON RODGERS OR TOM BRADY!!!!

Love the win. Our defense came up BIG. Great D win on the road. But, it is clear that this offense has serious, serious problems that if not fixed, will simply not be able to put this team at the playoff calibur level. Mularkey playcalling is not as good as Ryan’s no huddle playcalling. O-line, particularly right guard is a joke, Reynolds, Hauley, Johnson, whoever, doesnt matter. they’re all not NFL ready. Baker appears to have lost the will to be a football player. Mclure cant stay healthy. Sviteck almost cracks our franchise QB’s ankle in half. Sad. we dont fix that? 9 and 7 at best and Ryan doesnt last week 10. Thanks Thomas….lot of holes unfilled in exchange for a rookie receiver who’s not playing.

@UGABugKiller and all those that are blaming MM for the stagnant offense you need to look at the 2nd offensive series when it was 3rd and inches. MM had a play called and Mike Smith called timeout because he wanted to pound the ball and it ended up in a fg. MM is calling the plays based on what Mike Smith wants. I bet if Coach Smith took the reigns off and let MM coach like he wanted to then we might see a lot of the different things everybody is demanding we need, but in defense of what we do. If it’s bringing wins then ride it as long as you can right?

The falcons will win alot of games as long as they stick to what they do best. Trying to change to that high powered offense set us back 3 losses. I believe we understand now what we must do in order to win football games. We went 13-3 last season playing our own style. We just had a major panic attack in the off season because of the Green Bay loss. We can win a super bowl playing our style of football. We have to play smart, execute and not turn the ball over. Julio Jones can play be effective playing in our run and play action style offense. We don’t have to chunk it 60 yds to him every time. I think when he comes back you will see us getting really better having Julio Jones playing our style of football that took us to 13-3 last season.

The Falcons needed a win today, no question, if they were going to convince anyone they had a decent chance of returning to the playoffs or even managing a winning season. They did, and the manner in which they did (a very physical and intense game on the road against a much-improved Lions team) bodes well for after the bye week. There are still certainly some consistency issues to address (by now I cannot see why the no-huddle is not standard operating procedure on ever drive), but hopefully the momentum gained so far will continue to build, along with the Falcons’ confidence.

As for Suh, no question he’s a great, very physical athlete, but his personality flaws may well end up becoming a serious liability for the Lions at some point (that’s assuming he doesn’t seriously hurt somebody along the way, too). He’s earned respect for his abilities on the field, but the opposite is true for his nasty and insensitive behavior.

So What!! The Falcons didn’t play the best of games today, they won people. Who cares how many calls we got, how bad the other team played, who dropped an INT. The Falcons went on the road and won in a very hostile place. Matt Ryan may not be an elite QB but he has put the city of Atlanta back on the map, and he is still only in his 4th yr. He doesn’t know what a losing season feels like unlike his predecessors. I am a season ticket holder and die hard fan, sometimes the Falcons can piss me all the way off but never would I turn my back on the Birds. You farewell fans really humor me and are bad as the Saints fans dogging out our team. Have some confidence in what you have, stop hoping ertain players get hurt (Owens, Baker) and be happy with the fact that the bad Falcons are a thing of the past. Every offensive play will not be money, every defensive play will not be a sack, but a win is always a win.

I have been a life long lions fan as well. Im sure I can speak for all of us that it has been a breath of fresh air to finally see a change in this organization for the best. After an impressive 5-0 start , and victories over great franchises such as Dallas and Minnisota it wouldnt be Detroit style if we didnt hang our heads in shame once again . Personally, I believe Suh is an awesome player that posseses toughness, determination, agility, and and a passion to win football games. But, what he displayed today was pure classless, tasteless, and un-professionalism. Its on thing to lose a game because at that given day, the other team simply out-played you. For the most part , most of the athletes display acceptable professionalism. They go back to the drawing board, determine where they need improvement , practice hard the next week , and do it all again on Sunday with the hopes of executing everything they worked hard on improving all week. But , its a whole different story when you lose a football game have the dispicable nerve to show absolutly no remorse for a fellow NFL player who maybe seriously injured on the field and to taunt him with childish ,back-yard sandlot trash talk. I was ill after watching this poor display professionalism by a team I have supported ever since I was old enough to throw a football. Come on Jim, this weeks lesson needs to be in class. I am personally apologizing to Matt Ryan on behalf of your organization because, I do not believe Suh will offer any kind of public apology. Detroit has some good things going on this year, so lets continue to do them. But for gods sake, have some class doing it.

Once is a mistake…but when someone has a youtube video compilation of them and their questionable/cheap shots, its a pattern or a personality. Suh and Fairley have had their reputation follow them everywhere they’ve been, whether it be at Nebraska or in the NFL. Suh saying “Get the Cart out” today after Ryan was injured…let’s be real, there’s something seriously wrong with that guy. Period.

4-3, holding playoff tiebreakers on Philly and Detroit . . .after the bye week and the game at Indy, 5 of the last 8 are at home, with only three really tough games left (the two Saints games and at Houston).

A couple of observations…

1. In the near future, assuming Baker returns from injury, Svitek=tackle, “gator arms” Baker = guard (or maybe right tackle, but I doubt it).
2. Bosher is no longer the sorriest excuse for a punter/kick-off man in the history of the league; he is now merely “bad”. Hopefully by the time the playoffs(?) come around, he will have advanced to the heights of “average” or “mediocre”.

I thought The Falcons coaching staff made a really great move on the 3rd down run by Rogers at the end of the game.. they took the big back out and inserted their 3rd down back, the Lions had to be looking pass, then they got Rogers on the edge (he is quick) and he split the Lions and got the 1st..good coaching, great effort on Rogers part, he did a lot of it on his own..

I’m so proud of the Falcons! I knew it would be close but I wasn’t too confident given we’re not always the best road team and Detroit is tough. Matt Ryan really is “one tough Irishman!” He made 2 mistakes but pulled himself together and rallied the team. Turner showed big toughness, too, ouch on that finger dislocation! Svitek played great, not one penalty called on him and I know he’s so happy Matt is OK! Big time congrats to Tony G, a true professional warrior! Liked getting Harry more involved, he’s a scrappy guy. Grimes is awesome, love love the way he plays. Defense was great, 3rd quarter made me nervous but we hung in there and toughed out a big time win. Enjoy the buy week, birds!!

Rogers looks NOTHING like Norwood. Norwood had speed, but no balance. Jizz is all about acrobatic balance, I don’t think he has break away speed.

Norwood always went down on first contact (if he did not drip over his own feet) but and he could get the edge, or pop through a hole and outrun people, but he was pretty straight ahead and usually fell down on his own when he tried to shake and bake.

Jizz is quick and juky, and above all else, he wiggles and worms for max yardage on every single carry. He ran a 4.6, so I don’t know if he will outrun anyone, but I sense he has football speed and will rarely be caught from behind. I am interested to see what he can do.

However, Turner has the 3rd most yards in the country. I see no reason to take carries away from a guy who gets production like that. When he gets 20+ carries we win, it is that simple, that is Mularkys system. It is not always pretty, but it has brought this franchise to uncharted waters. Turner does seem to be running with urgency ever since the Green Bay game.

I think 11-5 is very possible for this team, ho hum, another winning regular season. Playoffs? Just got to get there before worrying about anything else.

I will agree that Matt isn’t too accurate on the long ball, he constantly overthrew receivers today but we CAN win with him, just have to work with his strengths. He’s tough, smart and can run a fab no huddle offense. He can lead this team but I totally agree that MM needs to go!! I’ve said that for years….

I have a question. Do all you “MMs gotta go” geniuses realize he have pretty much the best winning percentage in the NFL since MM showed up, on the heels of a 4-12 season without a QB?

His big failing is losing in the playoffs, but you realize we lost to the Cards (who also knocked Green Bay out in 09), and Green Bay, who is a team playing on a legendary level.

Just be glad we did not end up with Tony Sparano.

Is Falcons’ Defense improving or Opponenrs Offense slipping ?

-Edwards finally shows up but while Rush not Play off-, Front Four look and playing much better – —-Linebackers maturing and play more physically
- Secondary still not Play off caliber
-Punter is better
-Kick off OK but punt/kickoff coverage not good
- FG Kicker is excellent and could put Falcons into Playoffs in late December
-.IF OFFENSIVE LINE gets settled and back to 2010 performance when Ryan did not have 2011 dancing feet to avoid getting murdered ever passing play…….

Rogers is a much harder runner that Turner. For every run over 5 yards, Turner has 3-4 that are for 0-1 yard – it’s the most frustrating thing to watch.

And it’s not like he’s not getting holes, he’s just too slow to hit them, and he goes down to the first guy to hit him WAY too often for a guy his size.

Rogers broke more tackles on that one first down run than Turner did the entire second half.

Totally classless taunting of Ryan by Lions players, and classlessness galore from Lions fans for booing Ryan’s return (read that in the AJC but didn’t see it myself), but let’s not forget one classy exhibit when Mughelli went down and the Lion who tackled him took a knee and said a little prayer. Maybe he needs to give some lessons in sportsmanship to his team mates.

Hello Atlanta Falcons fans, Lions fan here and first of all I want to congratulate the Atlanta Falcons and their fan base for a well-deserved win yesterday. I would also like to send my best wishes to Matt Ryan, and hope that he has no lingering issues with his ankle from yesterdays game. Unfortunately it doesn’t look like Matt Stanford came away as fortunate as it appeared Matt Ryan did, but those are the breaks for an NFL player and team.

Mr. Jeff Schultz, I’ve read your article and most of the comments pertaining to your reporting of the extracurricular activities that took place in yesterdays game. Sir I find your article to be offensive, inaccurate, slanderous, and with absolutely no merit. It’s irresponsible journalist like you sir whom fan the flames of hatred, and biased opinions from sports fans that are too lazy, or ignorant to check the facts before they make comments which the NFL tape of the incident verifies the untruthfulness of at least one troubled and melodramatic Atlanta Falcons player (Roddy White). I have read all kinds of ugly and completely inaccurate comments about Lions players, head coach, and the Lions organization in general. For those of you who claim that Jim Schwartz somehow condones Detroit Lions players committing personal foul, or unnecessary roughness penalties. Yeah right is that why Gosder Cherilus was benched for week two after committing a personal foul, unnecessary roughness penalty at the end of the game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. If anyone claims anything of the kind regarding Jim Schwartz I would suggest they have there water source tested for the contents of LSD, or some other form of hallucinogenic!!! Now even Nick Fairley is being accused of being a dirty player… are you kidding me? Nick Fairley has only played in three games so far this year because he was coming off of a broken foot that he suffered in the first, or second day of training camp. He hasn’t even been on the field for two dozen plays as of yet, because one, they don’t want him to have a relapse, and two, he hasn’t had enough NFL experience to know what all of his assignment are. This is exactly how misconceptions and false assessments of players like Ndamukong Suh cause people to get the impression that Ndamukong is a dirty player, or is trying to cause injury. It gets escalated to other players on the Detroit Lions team such as Cliff Averill whom until yesterday has never been accused of dirty play, or intentionally trying to injure other players. In all reality I can understand Georgia Bulldog fans dislike of Nate Fairley, because he played his football at Auburn. But in all fairness shouldn’t he at least draw one penalty in his career before he is unfairly labeled as yet another dirty Lions player?

If you look at the film from yesterdays game you will see that (I believe it was) Corey Williams that jumped offsides and made contact with Matt Ryan’s helmet, which he was appropriately flagged for, but there was absolutely no intent to injure Matt Ryan, nor was he flattened as someone on this post inaccurately claimed. Also if you look at the film of Matt Ryan’s injury when he was down on the field there are several things I can bring to your attention that directly contradicts what two Atlanta Falcons claimed. One thing I would like to point out is that Lawrence Jackson could have pounced on Matt Ryan, while he was down on the field and injured. Consciously he did not throw his weight on top of Matt Ryan even though it appeared he lost control momentarily of the football. The second thing I would like to bring to your attention is the complete absence of Cliff Averill anywhere near Matt Ryan while he was down on the field and in obvious discomfort. How pray tell did Cliff Averill kick Matt Ryan’s feet when he wasn’t within 6 or 7 feet of him while he was on the turf? Number three, can anyone realistically see anything in the video that would suggest that any Detroit Lion said anything about Matt Ryan while he was laying on the turf? Seriously people do you believe that if someone made any remarks such as what were alleged by only two Atlanta Falcons players one of whom was well down the field at the time (Roddy White) that no one would have responded in defense of Matt Ryan? Come on people… if the tide had turned and it was Matt Stafford laying on the turf and one of your Atlanta Falcons made some comment such as has been alleged I know that the Lions would be jawing with whomever made such a stupid comment. That isn’t to say they are dirty, it’s just a matter of teammates whom would naturally get into the face of an opposing player to retaliate verbally and put him in his place for being so disrespectful. I can’t imagine that the Atlanta Falcons wouldn’t have been in either Ndamukong, or Cliff’s face in that case which as an ex-athlete I would expect from my fellow teammates. I’m not saying that no Detroit Lions player did not make a comment pertaining to the cart, but if anything about the cart was set by a Lion player I would strongly suspect that it was of concern because of the way Matt Ryan’s ankle lock when he was stepped on by his own offensive lineman. You must understand one thing about professional football players… nobody, and I mean nobody who plays football wants to see another player get carted off the field. Number four, how is it that only Todd McClure and Roddy White (whom was downfield at the time) were the only two people that heard what allegedly was deemed to be taunting? There are at least six Atlanta Falcons in the video including Matt Ryan whom is on record stating that he heard no such taunting from the Detroit Lions, has anyone asked themselves why only two people heard any taunting? Why if taunting was actually taking place, didn’t any other Atlanta Falcons offensive lineman report that they also heard the Lions taunting Matt Ryan? Lastly I have one more thing I find awfully fishy with regard to this story… why was it that Jeff Schultz couldn’t find Ndamukong, or Cliff after the game so he could at least ask them for their side of the story?

I don’t know Jeff Schultz personally, but this story seems so irresponsible of what I am assuming is a professional journalist. The facts are that the Detroit Lions have not caused any injuries to any players on any of the teams they have played this year, nor last year. The Kansas City Chiefs running back (Jamaal Charles) did have a season ending injury while playing the Detroit Lions, but he was not touched by a Detroit Lions player when he went out of bounds and slipped on the down marker which caused his season ending knee injury. I admit that Ndamukong draws more personal foul penalties than he, Jim Schwartz, any other Lions teammate, or fan would like to see, but they aren’t for intent to injure another player. But if you look at his penalties for personal fouls you will see that every one of them are for contacting a quarterbacks face mask or helmet, while he is trying to pressure, or stack a quarterback and most often while fighting through a double team. The coaching staff is actively working on him getting his hands lower so he contacts opposing quarterbacks chest high, rather than anywhere above the shoulders because of the ramifications those penalties bring. He, nor any other Lions player hit people below the knees, blindside defenseless players, or anything else that could cause severe injuries. Ndamukong Suh has also drawn flags from officials for perfectly legal tackles which is ridiculous when you consider the ramifications they bring with them. Last year when we were playing the Dallas Cowboys Suh tackled Marian Barber by his dreadlocks, which is considered part of the uniform and therefore is a perfectly legal tackle, yet he was flagged for a horse collar tackle. Replay shows that he tackled Marian Barber with one hand and his hand never came in contact with anything except Marian Barber’s hair. Then he drew another personal foul penalty for pushing Jay Cutler down to the ground face first while he was carrying the football past the line of scrimmage trying to scramble for a first down. That had to be the most disheartening penalty of the season because as Jay Cutler fell to the ground he fumbled the football, which the Detroit Lions recovered and while leading on the scoreboard. The referee who threw that flag motioned with his elbow that Suh used his elbow like a weapon to deliberately injure the back of Jay Cutler’s neck, but as the replay confirms the referee was entirely wrong with his first impression and Ndamukong pushed Jay Cutler with the palms of both hand’s just below Jay’s shoulders and completely on Jay’s back to push him down to the ground. Mike Pereira chimed in during that game after looking at the replay and said that the referee obviously got that call wrong, that Ndamukong Suh didn’t do anything illegal during that play, yet the commissioner still find him for drawing a flag. Even Jay Cutler didn’t consider anything Suh did during that play illegal, and he was on the receiving end of the tackle. Ironically Suh nor any other Detroit Lions player were objects of the media week in and week out until Cris Carter left Calvin Johnson off of his list of top five receivers in the NFL. One or two weeks later we played the Dallas Cowboys and Rob Ryan said that Calvin Johnson would be the third-best receiver on their team. The Lions played off Rob Ryan’s remarks and let Calvin Johnson’s play on the field speak for itself. After the Detroit Lions won that game Rob Ryan said they haven’t played the NFC East, implying that the Lions would have no chance of defeating any of those teams. Then we played the 49ers and Jim Schwartz didn’t handle Jim Harbaugh’s enthusiastic response and handshake after defeating the Detroit Lions, which I didn’t condone Jim Schwartz’s response. But something that went completely unmentioned during that whole fiasco was that Jim Harbaugh more than likely felt even more satisfied with that victory due to his previous experience with a Detroit Lions nobody seems to remember that near Jim Harbaugh’s end of his career (in 2001) he signed as a backup quarterback behind Charlie Batch. On the eve of the season opener the Detroit Lions made a trade for Ty Detmer, and Jim Harbaugh was cut. Jim Harbaugh was understandably hurt by the Lions choice, so I’m sure that with his 49ers defeating the Detroit Lions he more than likely felt a little extra satisfaction out of that victory.. Karma is a funny thing and Detroit Lions do not want any bad karma coming back and haunting them. In fact most of the players in the NFL believe in karma good and bad, and by nature they try to do what ever they can to avoid the bad karma. When you look at Matthew Stafford’s career thus far twice he has had season ending injuries and twice in one season he had an injury that cost him several games during one season. Of Matt’s three injuries in two seasons only one of them was actually penalize even though everyone thinks Julius pepper should have been penalized and fined for piledriving Matt into the turf. We’re used to not getting calls here in Detroit because of the NFL clearly has a double standard for teams that don’t have winning records, so we’re kind of used to it here in Detroit.

Hopefully I have helped to open the eyes of at least some of the Atlanta Falcons fan base with the facts pertaining to the allocation’s made by only two Atlanta Falcons players. And maybe, just maybe some of you will look at Ndamukong Suh and the rest of the Detroit Lions players with a more objective eye. A few people visit the Detroit Lions website and listened to the Detroit Lions players I would almost guarantee that your opinion of anyone on this team being a thug would most likely be surprised of them all. Many people listen to the players on their home football teams and believe the nonsense a few individual players claim the Detroit Lions said about them personally. No one on the Lions make any claim as to how they’re going to do against any opposing player, none of the guys on this team have that type of personality. Ndamukong Suh has always and will always say that his job is to get into the backfield, hit, sack, or just disrupt and wreak havoc in the backfield. Now you tell me is there any defensive player in the entire NFL that doesn’t have those goals, not only to be a problem for the other team had to deal with, but ultimately so they can win that game. Is there a crime in that? The media even tried to bait Suh along with Kyle Vanden Bosch and Cliff Averill into saying that they were going to target Tony Romo’s ribs leading up to the game between those two teams. Ndamukong Suh said straight up that he wasn’t the type of player (i.e. Dante Hall I believe was the Washington Redskins one week earlier that openly said he would try to hurt Tony Romo’s ribs and Felix Jones shoulder) who targets another player’s weakness. Then he added besides if I am fortunate enough to sack Tony Romo needs feel his weight (300 pounds specifically) and know he was there (or something to that effect) which I respect much more than I do Dante Hall’s comments. Yet Ndamukong get called out as being a dirty player and described as a player that intends to injure fellow NFL football players, which is a hilarious compared to other NFL professionals like Dante Hall, whom admittedly have that intention in mind. In fact Dante Hall said he was going to bag his coat to let him blitz Tony Romo on the Cowboys first possession.

Okay sports fans I hope all of you have an enjoyable rest of your NFL season, and good luck to the Atlanta Falcons (except if and when they meet up in the playoffs with my Lions LOL). I’m sorry that this got so lengthy, but I’m tired of hearing false accusations aimed at the Lions, for the simple reason that it’s “FASHIONABLE” this season, or at least that’s what it seems.

Jeff L. Do you think next time you can summerize instead of writing a whole article. Lol, but then again maybe the AJC will publish your article.

If anyone is gullible enough to believe the lies fabricated by the too neurotic, melodramatic, drama queens (Todd McClure and Roddy White) then I suspect your mammy’s dipped your pacifiers in the moonshine much too long. All you need to do is look at the film from yesterdays game, read the body language of the rest of the Atlanta Falcons football players, and arriving training staff (whom were all very close to Matt Ryan) and it should be clear that none of the accusations by those two sissified girly boys even happened. For these two drama craving lowlifes to create such ridiculous and obviously untruthful statements, (especially with the amount of distance between the two players when they claim these things were said) suggest only one thing… psychological intervention is of dire need in their pitiful little imaginary lives.

And for Jeff Schultz to run with this story and publish it in this hack of a media outlet without first verifying any truth to it shows his lack of journalistic professionalism. If the editor of this newspaper (or whatever form of media outlet that is) doesn’t fire Jeff Schultz after viewing the actions of the players involved in yesterdays game, then he has absolutely no credibility either. I have included the link to an interesting article and the actual video from yesterdays game if anyone without tunnel vision is interested in the actual truth. I don’t know about you people, but most of the rest of the world actually verifies something before they take a chance on slandering another persons character and potential livelihood.

I’m a die-hard Falcons fan, I’m not calling anyone a dirty player but I will say this, whatever happened Sunday may not have happened to the extent that it’s been made out to be but when you have guys on the field who can see everything making accusations, something happened. I just find it hard to believe that everything being said is false. Maybe if Avril wasn’t kicking at Ryan’s feet, he was kicking the air, and making his comments and emotional team mates didn’t like that.

Stop the D**m whinning it is part of the game today’s players cry too much if you want to do something about kick his A** on the field but I forgot the Falcons do not have anybody to do it on the offensive line because he was a man amongst boys. Roddy is so use to those soft A** players he play with everyweek I wished we had the same type nasty and physical players we would not get our A** kicked so much up an down the field.

Jeff L,

Todd McClure is a 10+ year veteran center who never says more than 5 words at the time. Your claim that he is one of two “neurotic, melodramatic, drama queenS” is so unfounded and self-serving that it makes you look stupid. Now personally I think that McClure heard EXACTLY what he said he heard, as he had no reason whatsoever to say that after a victory unless it was categorically true. I also think Roddy needs to keep his mouth shut and regain his form from last year and help the team into the playoffs. If anyone is being a drama queen here, it’s YOU. Read your post again. Statements like “I suspect your mammy’s dipped your pacifiers in the moonshine much too long” and “those two sissified girly boys” and “psychological intervention is of dire need in their pitiful little imaginary lives” and “this hack of a media outlet” speaks more towards your using a public forum to spew vitriol and embarass yourself FAR more than anything Schultz or White or McCure could have said to “slander another persons character and potential livelihood”. Get a grip man.

Jeff L,

Man, you are slandering yourself with your comments, as follows:

“He, nor any other Lions player hit people below the knees, blindside defenseless players, or anything else that could cause severe injuries”.

Did you not see the “tackle” put on our fullback Ovie Mughelli by Louis Delmas? Went for the knee from the start.
