I think Coach Richt was just trying to calm the situation down. I also think he expects his players and coaches to act with class. About the most angry the man has been publicly is when the players were seemingly jumping on the Vanderbilt logo after winning a game a few years ago. I agree with Coach Richt that we have expectations that our players and coaches will represent the institution in a manner in which we all can be proud. I don’t think he was giving Coach Franklin a pass. I’m coming to the conclusion that Franklin needs to apologize as well. It’s not his job to address UGA players directly and that’s what likely had Coach Grantham stirred up…it’s an afront to do such a thing. Franklin has his own history concerning temperment.

This whole issue will be ‘done’ with after this weekend’s Fla.-Ga. game, and if Grantham ever learns to act like an adult. Until then, it isn’t finished, nor should it be – it’ll hang over Grantham’s name every time it’s mentioned for a while, at least. And if Georgia loses this game, and thereby their shot at the SEC East title, then this incident will hover all offseason.

Here we go again. AJC just won’t let it die. I can understand Nashville still talking about it. They have nothing to do anyway. This was the most excitement Vanderbilt had in years unless you talk about one of the nerds blowing up the chemistry lab. Now, let’s really talk. I have read so many reports about this incident. I just finished reading the response from Kwames dad. To me, I think this was more sensational journalism that brought forth these suspensions than anything. You guys on here are pathetic at times and in due time, your readers will have the last say. It seems to me, everyone wants to jump on GA. GA is the bully. GA is the wild and crazy bunch. It can’t be those guys in Nashville. NOOOOO! Please. What you have failed to mention in any of your blogs is the fact that Vandergirls coach went after a college player. I could care less what some video department in a country city has to offer. I mean, come on. In this day and age, video can be altered in any way to prove a point. People that were there have said numerous times that Vandergirls coach started it. So why all the hate for Grantham? Why? Why when Saban gets fired up its not a big deal? Muschamp is mad every game and they have video evidence to support it but yet you guys never talk about that. I had to find out on sports illustrated site that he was called out for his numerous outbursts. Coaches get fired up. It was a lot of things in that game that was wrong from both sides. Continuing to act like GA is the only reason this incident flared up is irresponisble journalism. Common sense tells you it was more to it that Grantham just going off. All game long they were taking illegal shots at GA players. So of course GA started doing the same and thats why tempers were heated. Then you add it was a long, close game and it made things worse. I laughed at Vandergirls Coach talking about what Williams said to him after the game sounding like a little woman. Man please. Thats a kid. Regardless of what was said, you don’t talk to kids. You talk to another adult. Don’t wait until you almost get that tail wooped to run and try to tell boss. Oh your player and coach hurt my feelings. Please please coach control your team!! Nah, playa. Tell him the truth. Tell him how you went after a player and when he responded you wanted to go rat him out. But you learned quick that you picked the wrong coach to tell. Im glad most of us can see through this garbage that you guys are writing about this incident. Im very disappointed in the coverage of this issue by OUR journalists. Just stick to the facts. Oh and I saw how you tried to play up the way Richt called out Williams and Grantham. That’s sad. Im sure Williams has been called worse than that. Stop making non issues relevant.

You’re a good guy, Jeff, but you’re overreacting. To suggest that Grantham should be punished for defending a player getting cursed out by an opposing coach is a bit much. Franklin acted like a child. Williams may have been out of line, but he should not address opposing players.

McGarity is going after the Florida AD and Adams is going to take out the UF president. That should get things started for Coach Grantham. I know all our fans are saying it’s just emotion but it looked a lot like Coach Grantham was going to get into somebody’s else’s doughnuts to me. I was a well behaved mascot but next week Coach Grantham is encouraging me to bite somebody. I can’t say for sure but some of our players may be packing heat in Jacksonville. This is the new image we are trying to project and it seems to be working. Most of our lawbreaking in the past has been off-field. I think some on-field offenses (felonies) will liven things up.

OK I grant you that Grantham should have handled it better. But I’d rather we say nothing at all than call one of our own players a dumb***. Richt just took Franklin’s word for what happened! Where’s the family that Richt preaches about? And since when did CMR get a “potty mouth”? LOL! Isn’t that sort of thing what CMR calls an energy vampire? If Grantham was defending Williams after watching his noseguard get cut blocked, I think he had a right to be upset. Richt had sure better find a way to fire up the team between now and Florida and I think he has just made it harder on himself. If he can’t get at least 4 more wins this season, I think both he and Grantham will be gone next season.

Coaches Screaming at each other embarassing SEC: “Matter handled internally between league office and schools.”

Vandy player dirty hit way after the play followed by Geathers’ retaliatory shove: 1/2 game suspension for both (with one team playing with a trip to the dome in the balance and the other playing against a Service Academy.) SEC should have said ““Matter handled between players during play and penalized during game.”

Slive should now look for an extra dirty game between Vandy and UGA next year. Just like the one he guaranteed at Auburn this year, by letting Nick Fairley get away with the dirtiest play I have ever seen.

I completely agree with the Williams suspension. Was he retaliating? Of course. He should be penalized.

What Slive should have learned from this is that if the Refs don’t call a tight game both ways–it will get out of control. All of this was brought on by poor officiating.

This story is so overblown. If you want to see how Franklin’s guys do it, try watching the center take a cheap shot at Kwame’s knee and then give a thumbs up to his players and coaches. Sure, Franklin is trying to change Vandy’s image, but I don’t their alumni base is going much enjoy the new image.

If Williams was indeed the first to start things with Franklin, then he was probably wrong to do that. But the officials lost control of this game long before that happened.

I get it, though Jeff, the Braves flopped out of the playoffs, NBA is non-existent, Tech doesn’t even have a basketball stadium right now, and the Falcons are .500 and underperforming. There is jack to write about in the sports world right now.

Franklin refuses to talk about Saturday – our coaches have come out and issued at least some sort of apology. Franklin is a douche. Vandy won’t be getting out of the doghouse anytime soon.

Let’s move on and do our best to get ready for a hungry Florida team. And please AJC, let’s try analyzing the game, impact, and personal history/rivalry of the game instead of harping about suspensions and off-field issues.

I love how Schultz assumes from the video clip that Williams was the instigator. No one will ever know. WIth that logic, I can say, from the video clip, a grown adult and head coach at a major university was the instigator and went after a student athlete. However, one opinion does more to rile up the readers than the other, so go with that one.

To call the SEC office whining about why coaches didn’t get fined or suspended is ridiculous. Are you sad that you have to throw away the article you wrote about how Granthan deserved to be suspended and fined , and how you were right? Waaah.

I wish this never happened, but it did. What the player did to Kwame was dangerous and deserved more than 1/2 game. Kwame was just retaliating. (And to be fair, Ben Jones deserved more than a 1/2 when he did it a few years back) I guess its ok to gouge at someones eyes (*cough* brandon spikes *cough*), but retaliating after someone tries to ruin your knee is a no-no. Ridiculous.

And for the record, neither Grantham or Franklin deserved to be suspended. Public reprimand, sure. Grantham was sticking up for his players, and I for one commend him for that.

From NCAA rulebook Rule 9-2:
b. Other prohibited acts include:
1. During the game, coaches, substitutes and authorized attendants in
the team area shall not be on the field of play or outside the 25-yard
lines without permission from the referee unless legally entering or
leaving the field.
PENALTY—Dead-ball foul. 15 yards [S7 and S27] from the succeeding
spot. Flagrant offenders, if players or substitutes, shall be
disqualified [S47].

The SEC definitely should have at least reprimanded both coaches… no doubt… and emphasis on BOTH. Most media have been giving Franklin and Vandy a pass on this. In reality they were in the trash can with us. The little thumbs up the OL gives his sideline after the incident with Geathers and Franklin pumping his boys up (as seen in the video) shows that.

I will respond. It is a shame that the flagship University in the state of Georgia does not have the same support from the major paper in the state as the other universities in the SEC. If this would have happened at UAT or UTK the paper would have wrote front page stories defend CTG and the players actions (Due to cheap shots) and demanding the SEC not take any action (See Farley last year). Our major news paper allows their sports reporters do several negative stories about the university and place all the blame on the university. How sad.

Is our media so out of control that it can’t report on facts! It is obvious that this game got out of control because the Ref’s closed there eyes to what was happening and it began to snowball. Anyone who has ever played competitive sports surely understands that after a while you cannot continue to turn your cheek because they soon will both hurt, so you fight back. Interesting concept to stand up for yourself and your players on both sides. Really are we just to accept Franklin’s report because his ranting and crying was not as in your face as Granthom’s. It would be like a youth baseball coach going after a kid on the field. Would society accept this! I don’t think so but the angelic coach from Vandy gets a free pass i guess. Let’s put it all on the Dawgs that’s the easy way out forget the fact that after taking out Kwame the shameless center for Vandy gave the thumbs up sign to the sidelines! Question we all should be asking is was he told to do this??? Hmmmmn!

Two things about that video:

1) Richt was obviously trying to diffuse the situation by “agreeing” with Coach Franklin. He knkew the right thing to do was to just let Franklin whine and say whatever it took for him to calm down.
2) Coach Franklin is the biggest freaking crybaby I’ve ever seen! “#36 came up to me and made me feel bad…WAAAA…WAAAAA…” Coach Richt was right in saying that was horse sh$#. Franklin getting all bent out of shape over that is what is horse sh$#. The game ended on the last play of the game and Shawn Williams was excited that we won and may have taunted the Vandy sideline a little bit (don’t really know…haven’t seen that video yet). C’mon, really? Coach Franklin is the one who overreacted here.

I think Grantham has a legit right to be made about the Vandy center going for Kwame knee….Could have been career ending for Kwame….Kwame could not defend himself—hit was from behind at 13:09 in 3rd Q….film clearly shows Kwame defenseless…….so in my view Kwame has to turn around and defend himself—-he has to let Vandy center know he is not going to take it and Vandy center may do it again…….If Grantham was upset about Vandy center and defending Kwame—even though it was the wrong place and time to do it….I can understand it….Going for Knees is inexcusable.

Schultz, why don’t you bother asking the SEC why Bostic of Florida wasn’t suspended for his punch several weeks ago. The AJC blew this whole non-story up and forced the SEC’s hand, that’s why! The media in Florida takes care of the Gators, that’s why we don’t hear about any of their arrests until weeks later (hence the underage drinking arrest revealed just today, 3 weeks after the incident).

Football is a mean, aggressive, violent game. We NEED a coach like Grantham. If you go back and look, Saban, Meyer, Spurrier all have had similar incidents.

Absolutely, Jeff! UGA is very poorly represented by the comments from fans on here. I doubt many ofhtem are fans at all. All of the sudden its “Richt must be fired now.” Why???? Because of this situation?? Coach Grantham is the exact emotional opposite of Richt and I would imagine that is much like a mouse trying to tame a lion. I do believe that Franklin said something to Grantham that escalated the situation. Both of these coaches are obviously very immature. Richt is the voice of reason. But, I will side firmly with Geathers. That Vandy player blatantly tried to end his career and yes indeed, after the hit he looks back at his coaches and gives a ‘thumbs-up’ sign. I believe that late hit to Geathers was intentional and ordered by the Vandy coaches. If Geathers knew he was going to be suspended, he should have really taken it out on the guy instead of a simple punch to the side. I would have twisted the guys helmet by the face mask. Grantham needs to take a valium or smoke a joint. Chill out, dude!

How can you sit there and support Kwame’s suspension? Have you actually looked at what caused him to act the way he did? Have you actually looked? How do you think you would have reacted if that cheap, possibly season/career ending shot had been taken on you? I think Kwame showed great constraint not to have done anymore that what he did in that situation. As far as Grantham, who actually started that? It was Franklin!!!! Franklin started it and Grantham was ready to finish it. TG was taking up for his players. Tell me this, how in the hell can the SEC suspend Williams for a personal foul when Nick Fairly got away with all of his dirty playing last year?? SEC is a big crock of crap. Public reprimands (for both coaches) would’ve been sufficient.

But when is the league office ever consistent? Just like last year, they prefer making an example of one or two schools to issuing the same penalty consistently to every school.

The player suspensions are also in order. What’s ridiculous is the SEC doesn’t systematically tackle this stuff. It just makes an example of one game to put some fear out there. Do something dirty that’s caught on film and you MIGHT get suspended. See? SEE?! We took a stand! We suspended some players!

And chances are the only reason the SEC is handing out suspensions in this case is b/c of what happened AFTER the game that raised the profile of the incidents DURING the game.

Just be consistent. If you’re going to issue these suspensions, then review EVERY game played and apply the same penalty for EVERY infraction. The SEC’s enforcement is horse ****.

Each time you UGA fans post here, you just perpetuate the stereotype of being ill informed homers. Grantham should be held to a higher standard, as should Franklin. Real men can walk away from confrontation. These two did not. It was a mixed message to suspend the players and not take some action against the coaches. They are the leaders. Not going to jump on Schultz to much here, but the legitimate anger is well placed. Ever since Saturday this paper and the local sports media have been tearing up Coach Grantham and Coach Richt, but not once until the UGA fanbase started calling them on it yesterday did they start to actually look at Vandy Coach John Franklin and his actions during and after the game. While Grantham went a little overboard in defending his players, he was justifiably mad from all of the reports and video I have seen of Franklin going after Williams and yelling obscenities at him. I am sorry, but why did it take until yesterday for the local media here to start actually questioning the Vandy coach and his actions? That is my problem with this reporting is that it was so one sided for 3 days before a bunch of fans started calling you guys (to be fair not just Schultz) on it.

And the “intelligent” GA fans comment is a slap in the face of those who actually read your blogs and take the time to comment but who happen to disagree with you and legitimately feel a bias in your blogs. And they’re a lot more UGA blogs out there with more readers than this blog who are UGA fans who simply disagree with you and we are no less “intelligent” than those who agree with you. Comments like that and you wonder why people call you out?

I think the difference is between physical harm and words. I understand the stories tie nicely together but it’s not really fair to ask, “if the players were punished why weren’t the coaches”

But you are comparing apples to oranges. If you wonder why the SEC handles improper coaching behavior the way they do, that’s fine. Maybe they need to look at thier policies. I agree.

But that is completely unrelated to the suspension of these players for on field events. (except that the football infraction probably got more attention because of the coaches. Which might be a sort-of punishment in itself).

The “media” (general sense, but you included) have done a very poor job in reporting this story. From initially ignoring the blatant cut block to the back of Geathers’ knee, to suggesting that Geathers “punched” number #60, ignoring Franklin’s pettiness and immaturity of being baited by a 20 year old, ignoring the fact that Franklin was quoted by press members who were taking pictures on the field as telling Grantham “f— you” and now just quoting as gosphel that Richt called his own players names without confirmation. Ironically, the media who often tries people in the court of public opinion has thinnist skin off all, so you I am sure you can’t even fathom that any of the cited criticisms may be true.

Sorry, but this entire situation has been blown out of proportion. Vanderbilt has always marked Georgia as the game to beat. They really want to beat Georgia. They came in pumped up and ready, and smack talking was everywhere. Why would Georgia players talk smack to Vandy? I mean, it’s VANDY! Secondly, if you look at the video, it’s obvious Franklin started the accusations on our players to Grantham. Coach G was simply defending his player, and I honor that. Schultz, You don’t know football the same way I can’t explain what child birth feel like. It has to be experienced and not just from observation. I don’t think that you are a bad guy (not that you care), but how can you expect to be credible on the subject? It doesn’t matter, you’ve answered my question. I don’t expect you to out yourself, especially in an emotionally charged forum like this. My point about knowing the game is this: You have to experience the game to know what it’s like to be beat up physically and mentally. This particular game had a lot of elements to it, a young, very emotional Vandy coach trying to find an edge for his team. A game that went down to the wire, decided on the last play where both teams are still on edge when they cross the field to shake hands. Franklin was clearly upset about the loss and said some things to a player that instigated the whole ruckus. Only, your reporting started with what happened after Franklin’s actions and I think that’s where you made your error.

I don’t believe, as t3 says, that McGarity isn’t a big supporter of Richt. Don’t know where that’s coming from cause I haven’t heard anything from him that would jeopardize Richt’s position. As for Richt having had enough of this crap, then I tend to agree, but not to quit, to deal with it. If Georgia’s DBs had been carpin’ all night at the Vandy bench, as was reported by Georgia-based recruits on the Vandy sidelines,,,if Williams was shootin’ his mouth off at the Vandy bench and head coach at the end of the game…and if Todd Grantham can’t act like ‘an adult’, and further, if he, Grantham, condones that kind of behavior from his players,..then that’s what Richt needs to fix. If after he rights the ship and wins the East, and beats Bama or LSU, he decides to quit, I certainly wouldn’t blame him. Who the hell needs to put up with the lizard-brained, peckerwoods that masquerade as Bulldog fans around here and regularly take shots at him that are not deserved?

Some of people commenting on this need to remember that Jeff Schultz, Mark Bradley, Bill King, and others are not supposed to propaganda mouthpieces for the University of Georgia or any of the teams and universities (Georgia Tech, Braves, etc.) within this state. Just because they write for a Georgia newspaper does NOT mean they are honor-bound to stick up for Georgia teams all the time. They are supposed to provide facts, and opinions based on facts, not the other way around. It’s not about what UGA and Vanderbilt did or didn’t do; it’s about principles, morals, and ethics. In this case, they are not so much as saying that UGA started the incident, but that UGA should have exercised self-restraint and sportsmanship, which would have been the respectful and honorable thing to do. Yes, football is an intensely emotional sport. However, as I’m sure most of us have been taught, two wrongs don’t make a right. Geathers should not have thrown that punch. Coach Franklin should not have been popping off at our players. Coach Grantham should not have gotten into Coach Franklin’s face. Whatever issues Coach Franklin had with our team should have been sorted out between him and Coach Richt after tempers had cooled down. For all of those who complain that Richt isn’t emotional, I’m pretty sure he got emotional in the locker room after that fracas. It was a good thing he kept calm on the field and was actually trying to cool the situation down by helping to separate players and coaches. But what if Richt himself lost his composure at that moment, and the situation escalated? We’d probably be talking about how Richt would be serving a suspension and paying a fine. But imagine if we did not react the way we did at all. Then we could accuse Vandy of being whiners, classless, and thuggish, while we could claim to rise above such nonsense. I have more respect for the man who exercises self-restraint in the face of adversity and ugliness than the man who loses composure and makes a bad situation worse. Having said that, the SEC should have given Vandy’s Logan Stewart a full game suspension since he started the situation with Geathers. That would have been more fair since Geathers’ punch was a reaction to a willful act which could have ended his career. Of course, it’s only fair that the suspensions ought to be charged to the next games of both teams, no matter who the opponent is. To have UGA’s suspension take effect after the Florida game would have been totally unethical if the same had not been done for Vandy. UGA should not emulate Ohio State, which was able to have their player’s suspensions charged to this seasons games, and not the Sugar Bowl back in January, only to have their wins vacated for the season, including the bowl victory. Treating the rules like a doormat and being ignorant of the facts will only get you so far in the short-run. Hopefully, the players and coaches can learn from this experience and move on. I do not like the outcome of this, either. I understand Mr. Geather’s and other people’s frustrations. But the simple fact is that we should not be condoning this behavior at UGA. Many of us take pains to teach children morals and ethics. Perhaps the “adults” should stand before a mirror and tell themselves that. But now, I’m ready to move on and beat Florida. GO DAWGS!!!

Schultz, can you explain why the AJC never reported on the Georgia Tech offensive lineman that was ejected from the 2007 UGA-Tech game for a dirty block? Multiple blogs and stories have been devoted to Kwame’s supposed punch, but a Georgia Tech player getting ejected from a game was never even mentioned. You said you comment on the news. How was that not news? Can you explain why it took almost 2 years for the AJC to uncover an NCAA investigation of the saintly Yellow Jackets? Why did it take so long for the AJC to get wind of this?

I’m no conspiracy theorist. This isn’t a conspiracy. Its actually quite obvious. The AJC has a funny idea of what is “news” and what isn’t “news.”

The penalties for these players were reasonable. (What didn’t happen to Nick Fairly doesn’t bear going into. Dude has bad karma–the universe will take care of its business with him.)

I think what has people angry is the seemingly arbitrary way the SEC imposes these penalties. Clip a player or throw a punch and you’ll automatically be suspended is just not widely enforced. And they should be. Selective enforcement is just not fair.

Maybe the SEC is starting THIS WEEK to apply the same rules consistently to everyone. But I’ll believe it when I see it.

The majority of the comments about this latest Shultz article summarize the current ineptness of the UGA football program. Bottom line: We have an undisciplined team (offense, defense and special teams) which is a result of poor coaching. If fans believe this team is worthy of going to the SEC Championship, they are wearing blinders. The five consecutive wins are a result of playing five horrible teams that cannot get out of their own way. We have played 2 good teams and lost both games. I have watched every play of every game this year and we continue to gift wrap scoring opportunities for our opponents. I want to believe, but visual images on the ol’ flat screen do not lie.
It will be a long day for the Dawgs in the Gator Bowl.

All of this excitement will definitely seep into UGA’s preparations for Florida. I think people should expect a VERY focused team next Saturday that is going to handle their business. These things have a way of tightening up a program. UGA will be sharp against the Gators….and this hoopla will be the catalyst. Mark Richt is 11-10 since the beginning of the 09 season up to now in SEC play, with no wins over a ranked team during the same time period. His schedule, which he does NOT control, is his best friend right now. Replace the 2 Mississippi schools this year with say LSU and Arknsas and this team would probably be 3-4. Yes, we have seen a few bright spots. Could he get this program turned around. Sure. But in big boy college football, mediocre for 3 years is 9 lives to a cat. I assume how he ends up the year will tell us if he gets an extension or is replaced. Just like this country, the Dawg nation is split on that.

This stuff goes on with all teams. It’s football. Other teams just don’t get the publicity. Someone above mentioned the Fullmer Cup from last year. Who won it this year? No reporting on that probably Florida. Our players get arrested for drinking and everyone says Richt should cut them. Florida player gets arrested for same thing you never hear about it. Georgia player pushes a player in the head after that player hits him first but you only hear about the GA punch. Florida player punches AL player but he is right back the next game.

Jeff, what is your end goal here? why are we still on this subject when it is Oct. 19th? Is it becuase it is a bye week for the Dawgs and there is nothing else to write about on the subject of football? I mean you journalists are sitting here crying for justice to be done esp. against Georgia players (even though a player almost got his knee blown out by a cheap shot, so I have to agree with Mr. Geathers on his stance) but yet those actions that happened in the game (cheap shots, cut blocks, punches thrown, etc.) happen at every level of every college football game. And shockingly enough it happens at the High School level and just to let you know it probably happens at Pee Wee level as well.
So now justice is served and two starters on Georgia’s team are suspended. That’s great and you got what you wanted.
Now the next tragic step that is going to happen is that Georgia looses to Florida and you and the rest of the journalist posse are going to be screaming to fire Richt. Even though you (but not only you obviously, there are other journalists as well) probably have had some sort of fraction of responsibility for that hypothetical chain of events (Georgia loosing to Fla. because two key players are suspended) to happen because this is the only “sensational” thing to keep reporting on. So basically back to my original question, what is your goal here? Please don’t hide behind the “I am just reporting the news” shield. That left town quite a while ago.

I guess I really am blind as it just now occurred to me that the bug-eyed temper tantrum just elevated Grantham past St. Richt’s sainthood to deity? I must have missed the meeting. The majority of the perspectives apparent of us blind homers is that God Grantham was sacrificing his dignity, such that it is, in protection of his poor little defenseless motormouth and enforcer. Of course perspective is a narrow thing with us blind homers. We don’t see the just to the brink of flag dropping celebrations and exuberant dances after tackling a guy downfield as either offensive or ignorant. We also don’t see the jaws working and all of the other after whistle shenanigans as anything other than God Grantham’s inspiration. Of course, if a ref finally gets enough of the cumulative effect and finally drops his hankie it is only because Richt has always had a discipline problem.

Then in the end God Grantham gets to increase his legend with the blind homers by justly dispensing his wrath upon a vicious attacker to his flock. Never mind that the receiver of the attack had kicked sand into the eyes of the Great Satan Franklin. Never mind that he had coached and turned a blind eye himself to his own defensive player’s post-whistle handiwork, actually even blessed it by not even pulling the player for receiving the wrath of the referee. All can see that this is all the pretender St. Richt’s fault for not excusing these sinners and the newly deified Grantham’s star is on the rise.

Head Coach Grantham, Georgia’s Grantham, the True Dawg Fan’s champion and defender of the faith (albeit via taunts and tantrums), these are all being whispered and bandied about. A fine representative of a fine institution.

When I was just a little puppy I met a fan who called himself Dawgarithm and I found out he was once head of the math department. He would get down on his knees and bark and slobber and lift up his leg like he was going to wet fans from the other team but – this is important – he never wet anybody. This was acceptable behavior then and remains so now. I don’t see the big deal with Coach Grantham since he never got his hands on anybody and no charges can be brought. It’s the new game day experience and now it’s just a little more Miami-like than we’re accustomed to.

The coaches shouldn’t be reprimanded and if the SEC is going to punish Geathers they should suspend all that punch. (See the Florida player against Bama) If they are going to suspended Williams which 99% of people would say is stupid then they should have suspended Fairley for his hit on Murray last year. They are picking and choosing and don’t have a standard for what they are doing. Auburn (Could be any school in the SEC in the hunt for a NC) gets preferential treatment on all accounts last year to make the SEC $$ while UGA and VAndy are not in the hunt so suspensions. So this is the easy button crowd. The real story…a HC from Vandy complains about a thug player from UGA. Then a Coach from UGA talks up for the Thug player to the HC. There was a time when the HC from Vandy would have picked up the phone on Monday and called the HC at UGA to discuss what happened and those two would have either agreed on a resolution or agreeded not to agree!!! Thugs have taken the game and no class can be found and that my college football fans is the real problem but then again just look at this country. Hell…everybody wants to play two innings regardless to whether they’re worth a sheet or not.

A agree with alot of what you had to say. But, I think what alot of the Dawg fans are upset with is the disparity in which the NCAA and the SEC hand out punishment. Takio Spikes intentionally tries to gouge out one of our players eyes and the SEC does nothing. Nick Fairley spears our QB in the back after Murray has already thrown the ball and is unpunished. He also crashes into his leg after a pass in which could have easily taken out a knee. The NCAA suspends AJ Green for 4 games for selling a jersey but does nothing when Cam Newton’s dad is trying to sell his son for a 100,000. And it’s not just UGA getting a raw deal. While Auburn will apparently keep their championship, Tech will not, and it wasn’t that Tech did anything all that serious, just that the mighty NCAA did not like their cooperation, or lack of. Honestly, both of the UGA suspensions are the result of retaliations and were not premeditated.

Coach Grantham has all the support in the world from me. As a strong Bulldog supporter for years, I was one of those many fans who have argued that we need an emotional coach with some fire. Hopefully those bashing CTG are not the same ones who argue for Coach Richt to be more emotional. To be quite honest, as much as I support CMR and want to win with him at the helm, I am extremely disappointed in the comments he made and his failure to support his players or staff. Maybe that has been the unseen fall of the red and black over the years. Then again, those statements are being reported to us by Jeff Schultz with the AJC who obviously doesn’t know his butt from apple butter.

CMR was right. #36 was a dumb*** and Grantham’s actions were horse****. The only positive I got from the Vandy game was CMR’s demeaner in the locker room after the game. He was not happy. 1st time I’ve heard him give anything but banal responses after a game. And no suspensions! All game long the hate has been building. It’s just natural that people need a way to get the anger out. We can have first-aid stations and all that to make sure nobody gets killed.

Seriously, enough of this drama queen crap. It’s football people…………….FOOTBALL!!! Stuff happens every game. Players talk crap, coaches talk crap also. Players take cheap shots and the other players react. Sometimes pushing and shoving breaks out. Happens every game, high school, college, the pros. It happens! Is it right? No. You want good sportsmanship and a good clean game. But it is football. Stuff will happen.

Mayor Nancy Denson had requested that a committee of the Athens-Clarke County Commission consider capping the number of bars in the downtown area, according to the Athens Banner-Herald.

The committee considered a number of data, including crime and revenues, and voted unanimously Tuesday against a cap, the Banner-Herald reported.

Commissioner George Maxwell noted that the nightspots have made downtown Athens a thriving tourist destination.

Schultz, I hope you are sued for libel for putting this “transcript” out there. Anyone who watches it objectively cannot say that Richt definitively called Shawn Williams a derogratory term, and certainly not without being able to see Richt’s mouth. I think it would more appropriately be considered unintelligible, and to me it sounds more like “he shouldn’t have done that.” But good job Schultz of trying to not have any liability by just passing along what the Nashville news said. I hope they find a way to sue you and them. At worst it is libelous, at best it is inappropriate and unprofessional journalism…just what I have come to expect from you and the AJC. You have had it out for Richt ever since he made you look like the child you are in that press conference years ago, and you hardly even make an attempt to mask your disdain for our coach and program.

If an Alabama player punched a guy, regardless of the reason, and it was clear on film I would not complain about a half-game suspension. But Alabama’s defense is so deep, a half-game suspension would not make a difference. When your defense is so thin that a small suspension might cost a game, now that is the real problem.

Do these guys run into each other at SEC functions later on. This stuff never seems to carry over. I remember my dad in the 30s playing for Tech. There had been some bad blood in the Georgia game between two players. That spring the Tech guy, at a track meet with Georgia, in Athens, walks right up to the Georgia guy while he is throwing a shot put and coldcocks him. No warning no nothing and apparently back then the meet goes on like nothing had happen. The Georgia guy picks himself back up and keeps throwing the shot. My mother told me the story like it was the right thing to do and they enjoyed watching it a lot. Doubt that happens now days too premeditated, would put you in prison.

Jeff, while you’re asking the league’s officials questions, have you considered asking them about their inconsistent enforcement of these ‘rules’? It’s a serious question. You’d get a ton of views for taking them to task. Two examples from this year. Jon Bostik of Florida takes a swing at a Bama defender, no suspension. The rulebook clearly reads that a swing (even if no contact is made) constitutes fighting. Second, Courtney Upshaw kicking a Vandy player after being chopped, almost in an identical manner to Geathers. No suspension.

Seems the SEC felt compelled to do some suspending here due to the visibility you guys gave the story – congrats on that! But selective enforcement by the big, bad SEC should be frowned upon, should it not? Take them to task!
