SEC punishes players, but why no reprimand for coaches?

Vanderbilt coach James Franklin stated his case to Mark Richt after the game.

Vanderbilt coach James Franklin stated his case to Mark Richt after the game.

(Updated with SEC statement on coaches.)

Georgia’s attempt to achieve a rare exacta — 1) beat Florida; 2) win the SEC East — just got a little more difficult.

The SEC, in an expected move, has suspended two Bulldogs defensive starters — safety Shawn Williams and nose tackle Kwame Geathers — for their actions in last week’s victory over Vanderbilt. Each must sit out the first half of the Florida game. Also suspended for a half was Vandy center Logan Stewart.

Meanwhile, the conference chose not to act on the actions of Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham or Vandy head coach James Franklin. That’s odd. It sends mixed messages.

This is not to suggest either Grantham or Franklin should have suspended, and a conference spokesman wasn’t even aware if there is precedent for a coach being fined for an on-field action. But the minimum of  a public reprimand certainly seemed in order.

I sent an email to SEC associate commissioner Charles Bloom asking why there was no publish discipline of any kind for Grantham and Franklin. This was his emailed response: “Matter handled internally between league office and schools.”

Coaches should be held to at least as high a standard as players. Actually, higher. They are the adults in this scenario, at least theoretically.

As for the impact of the suspensions: The Dogs’ defense has improved this season — notwithstanding a poor second half against Vanderbilt — so the loss of Williams and Geathers, even just for a half, hurts. Williams has been one of the defense’s best players, but was flagged for a flagrant personal foul in the third quarter. Geathers drew two personal fouls, one stemming from a punch at Stewart, who clipped him from behind.

Williams reportedly also was one of the initial sparks to the post-game scrum involving the two teams. Various videos from news sites have popped up, the most recent indicating that Williams was popping off after the game to Franklin, who then returned verbal fire, which brought Grantham into it. Then things exploded.

WSMV television in Nashville released raw video footage on Tuesday that showed a post-game conversation between Franklin and Georgia coach Mark Richt, who apologizes to the Vandy coach for the actions of Williams and Grantham (while also calling each a name).

Suffice to say, Richt did not intend for those comments to become public, even if he probably was right.

Here’s the transcript from the news video:

Franklin: “36 comes up, after a tough game, talking **** to me!

Richt: “Okay.”

Franklin: “Rubbing our face in it right after the game!”

Richt: “He’s a dumb***.”

Franklin: “And then your coach when I tell him about it, then he goes after me and the fight starts.”

Richt: “That’s what I thought happened, I apologize. It’s horse **** horse ****.”

Then coach Franklin finds another coach to express his feelings to.

Franklin: ” Hey, 36 after a tough game, come over and going to talk **** in my face after the game. That’s NOT how my guys do it!”

Here’s a link to the video.

This is two strikes for Grantham, including last year’s episode when he gave multiple choke signs to a Florida place kicker. But there has been no official statement from the school, and athletic director Greg McGarity has only referred to Richt’s post-game comments, in which the coach expressed regret for the way his team acted after the win.

On the field, the Dogs definitely will take a hit in the first half against Florida next week. But they take a hit off the field as well.

Yeah, it’s a hit off the field, again, too. Hit after hit this program has suffered for 11 seasons to-date, both off the field and after the game too, and on the field where in 11 seasons to-date Mark Richt has NEVER beat both Florida and the vols in the same season. In The SEC East, that is death knell.

So, there we have it – inaction on the part of The SEC except to send Jeff Schultz of the AJ-C a personal e-mail that the league office has handled this privately between the 2 institutions.

Jeff Schultz, I will accuse you of stealing my point.

Without these actions by these two (2) coaches, their players would not have been suspended today – so, where are the leaders’ the role models’ the adults’ the coaches’ suspensions ? Hello, SEC, tell me would you really have suspended any of the 3 players had not James Franklin, smartly as it turns out, confronted Todd Grantham, both of whom wear their hearts on their sleeves ? Go ahead, it’s ok, you can tell us.

And, then there is this little ISSUE of Mark Richt. He recruited his 31 players and gave the 31 scholarships to play vs Florida in the 1st half a week from tomorrow in JAX. The 31 will not play in the 1st half. To each I was told Good Riddance. Ok. So, the coach was just wrong in recruiting them here for which you, by the way, heralded Mark Richt for bringing here to play vs Florida a week from tomorrow and now the 31 of them will not play in the 1st half. And, what has Mark Richt done to specify the behind the scenes truth about why so many are just GONE ? He called 1 of his players a DUMB*** now didn’t he ? And, what of his coaching staff, often taking it on the chin by yours truly for 11 seasons now in review, haven’t they ? And, so not strike 2 but strike 4. (1) Choke on field goal which by the way was true. (2) Nick Williams at the G-Day Game publically reprimanded for dirty hit to our Starting Tailback and these but 2 of the 31 not there at kick-off a week and a day from now this coaching staff assembled by Mark Richt and for whom then he only is responsible for their 2-8 record vs Florida when we thought we were upgrading ourselves from Jim Donnan – who it might be added NEVER put UGA through this daily bad press which this coaching staff of Mark Richt has put us through; yes he lost 19 games in his 5 years while Mark Richt amassed 21 losses the last 5 years by direct contrast, us # 2 in Fulmer Cup said 5 years too, and 2 more losses this season – one again, questionable opponent. 17 questionable opponents to-date in 11 years, none of the 17 of which end the season in the AP Poll Top 25 without their win over Mark Richt; and his deplorable # 35 rank all 11 years vs teams finishing in the Top 10 and again this season another of such. We lose to teams we should not lose to; South Carolina for example this season. We lose to the teams who finish the season in the Top 10 too. 3 wins in 11 years vs teams who finish in the Top 10 that season out of 13 games to-date. So, saintly Mark Richt says to this exacerbated James Franklin without so much as getting the facts that the coach he hired reluctantly I point out to replace Willie Martinez while I called for the heads of Mike Bobo and Willie Martinez (Remember ?), this coach he just hired Mark Richt calls his actions once again, Horse****. (3) Last week, Todd Grantham handled Mark Richt physically, he of the $ 750,000 annual total compensation handling physically he of the $ 3, 500, 000 annual total compensation. (4) HORSE**** actions on nationally TV Saturday night on ESPN new SEC Contract about to be renegotiated.

Mark Richt has maintained throughout from the outset to this very nanosecond that Shawn Williams is a DUMB*** and Todd Grantham’s actions, once again for the 4th Time in his short tenure, HORSE****. And, that Kwame Geathers cannot punch an opponent who has already been flagged for his transgression. We are an undisciplined football program, have been for 11 seasons under Mark Richt both on the field and after the game and off the field. Agree ? Disagree ?

Why no punishment for the coaches? Because it would give you idiot sportswriters something else to write about, since you care more for creating a soap opera than you do for the game.

Mark Richt, sir, I have NEVER seen an apology from you sir to your football Starting player # 36 Shawn Williams, sir. Twice, to-date, you have ONLY apologized for your profanity-laced discussion that BOTH your players and your coaching staff were BOTH WRONG. If you feel vindicated Mark Richt by the penalty to your PLAYER you called a DUMB***, you nonetheless must : (1) not feel vindicated that you are LEFT with FIRING Todd Grantham yourself for his 4 transgressions strikes I just detailed again for your benefit Mark Richt including this BULL**** and (2) not feel that you OWE your SCHOLARSHIP football Starting Player an APOLOGY for calling one of your Scholarship Recruits, your STARTING PLAYER, a DUMB***. You guys can say whatever you want about Spurrier, but he’s a class act Coach. Personally, I want GruntHead to keep his job as long as he can at UGA. It makes recruiting and taking quality athletes out of the state of GA to play at USC soooooooooo much easier! Personally, I have the utmost respect for Coach Richt, however to allow someone like GruntHead to represent your University, Coaching Staff, Team, Parents and Students, then you’ve got serious fundamental respect and accountability issues to ALL!

You’d think that Vandy would have mastered the art of losing gracefully by now, since losing is why they’re allowed to stay in the conference. All the media pandering in the world won’t be able to hide the epic fail of Vandy’s trip to Athens next year. Franklin better get his bogus talking points prepared well in advance.

Heck even tennis is out of control with Venus and Serena Williams. But they are heavily fined when they misbehave. John McEnroe started the long display of bad manners and poor sportsmanship. If Florida can figure out how to field a punt it’s going to be closer next Saturday than you think. But if the game is dull maybe Muschamp and Todd The Blob can liven things up. UGA played two good teams and lost to both. Florida played 3 good teams and lost all 3. Next Saturday the mediocre collide. Whichever wins, South Carolina will be in the dome in December representing the SEC East. Spurrier has both talent and class.

Yes (also meaning we probably got lucky with half a game suspension on him). If all of us Dawg fans were to be realistic, I think we would agree that all of the players received consisent punishment or maybe even got out of it a little easy. Finally a coach shows emotion on our sideline and he’s attacked by the media. In an effort to look just, the SEC suspends our boys. CMR’s indifference has cost games and left his players at the mercy of poor officiating at best, and it’s put their careers and in some cases, their lives in danger at worst. It’s too late to make examples of anyone. The only take aways are that if you cry to the media, you might get what you want. And if you want to be a nasty human being on the field, you’d better play for a BCS contender, so you won’t get suspended as it would potentially cost the conference and the NCAA cash.

I have read several blogs today on the AJC Sports section and the reactions of fans from every team. The one big disappointment is the fact that some think the conference officials are out to get UGA. I personally know that the SEC staff personnel are professional and would love to avoid any disciplinary action against any team. However, when games are televised nationwide and someone ( coaches, players, officials) make a ill advised error in judgement the SEC office has to react. Sometimes the office has written rules to cover those actions, in other ares the staff has to work with the Universities involved and come to a mediation to determine a fair and balanced approach.

The issue of throwing or striking another player, official or spectator has written rules which are applied. Lets make this clear, during preseason practices the SEC has officials visit schools and go over basic rule changes and points of interest that will be strictly enforced during the season. Fighting and striking others is covered and each player understands that if they strike an opponent or anyone else the penalty will range from sitting quarters, games and full suspensions for the remaining of the season. No one can defend any player stirking another player under any circumstance. This is not street ball and being the premier conference in football requires stricter rules that must be enforced. Football is a controlled anger sport and one of the reasons the unsportsmanlike rule was put in place was due to massive amounts of taunting and trash talking from players. Argue all you want but you are not going to win the argument.

The SEC did the right thing with the coaches and more than likely gave some guidance on how School Presidents and School AD’s should address the coaches involved. Keeping the discipline in house was a great call.

All one can hope is a lesson was learned by all and these young men and coaches grow from it.

UGA is deep on defense and missing Geathers for one half is not going to make that big of a difference and he will fresh and ready to go in the second half when others will be worn down and physically beat up when he runs on the field for his first action.

Good luck to all the SEC teams and Good Luck.

Beast from the Forest: Just because you say something doesn’t make it true. The coach DID say that he had CALCULATED his response to the personal fouls. HE DID say that. Just because you say he didn’t doesn’t make it true. What it does is make you a bare faced LIAR.

As to the behavior of 36 I you can not find a single instance where I condoned, justified or took up for his behavior. We aren’t discussing his behavior. If you’d like to compare his idiotic bad sportsmanship with that of the behavior of the UF player who threatened to kill a woman, then we can do that. I THOUGHT we were discussing the behavior of an adult who IS NOT in charge of the “college student” as you define him. If it were YOUR college student you wouldn’t want that man screaming at him either. If you think it’s OK that he did, you’re a moron with no moral compass.

As for the reasonable part, I never thought I was talking to a reasonable person or even someone who is capable of reason when your premise is that the adults in a situation have no responsibility in the way they react to the behavior of the “college student.” And when you ad the fact that TWICE I told you my comments were directed toward the clip/punch incident being punished equally I have no alternative to conclude that I have been discussing this with not only a person with no moral compass but an illiterate one.

SEC FACT FINDER I agree completely with your analysis of the rules and punishment. And fully agree with the rule. What I DO NOT agree with is the logic that the punishment of the original act (cause) and reaction (effect) merit equal weight.

First obviously it was intentional. The thumbs up the kid gives the bench is proof that it was premeditated. In my mind the cause of the incident deserved much more punishment than an unpremeditated reaction.

Using that same logic one would conclude that America was just as much at fault for being at war with Japan in World War II as Japan was. After all, the US did not have to react. I am not indicating that the seriousness of a football game is likened to war. What I am referring to is the logic that is used in handing out this punishment.

Concerning rulings on punishment that makes UGA fans believe as you mentioned that they do not get a fair shake in matters concerning the NCAA and SEC are they include the SEC’s decision to suspend the UF player for 1 quarter for trying to stick his fingers through the face mask and into the eyes of Knowshon Moreno unprovoked and then a reaction to what would be assault off the football field gets a half. Then Williams gets suspended for personal fouls that were at worst no worse than the spearing of Aaron Murray by the AU player in last years game receiving no suspension. Ad to that the suspension of AJ Green for 4 games last year as the Ohio State players were allowed to play in their bowl game for FAR more egregious rules violations. If in your fact finding you could come up with specifics why these incidents should be viewed as fair then I believe the fans of the UGA might begin to see things in a better light.

Is that really you responding to these posts. If it is, you are the most unprofessional “reporter” I’ve seen in a while. You are not a blogger. You are supposed to be a professional reporter. You know, report the news, not try to create it by advocating for some sort of reprimand for the coaches. That’s what an editorial page is for. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised though. You do work for the Urinal and Constipation. That being said, I won’t read your “articles” any more. Good bye.

It’s fairly dumb that this is in the news still, especially the words the coaches actually said to each other. It’s obvious some of those covering sports either didn’t play sports or had thin skins when they did. In an emotional situation, I’m sorry, coaches aren’t reaching into their bibles to find the correct words to say. This whole situation is silly.

“SEC’s decision to suspend the UF player for 1 quarter for trying to stick his fingers through the face mask and into the eyes of Knowshon Moreno”
_____________________________________

Brandon Spikes’ fourth-quarter interception for a touchdown punctuated a game in which Joe Cox threw three (3) interceptions against eventual # 3 ranked Florida propelling Florida to a 41-17 victory over the Georgia Bulldogs, leaving Georgia at 4-4 on the season and left out of the polls for 2009, 2010 and now 2011. What we have done here at UGA, is to stay in the Bad Press and play undisciplined football, and act undisciplined ourselves, for which we are – once again being punished. You can quit with the excuses because that player suspended himself for an entire game. You don’t get the facts correctly stated, and whine that what ? That Kwame Geathers alone in all this world can punch a player because you say it is OK ? Really ? # 36 Shawn Williams has been and Isaiah Crowell has been front and center on many of their plays for POOR SPORTSMANSHIP. It starts at the top. A team or a company presents itself as their CEO does, imitating their CEO. Get over it Phil. Quit your Whining REAL PHIL. The punishment The SEC left out was suspending “HORSE****” Todd Grantham. You won’t see Mark Richt do the same to himself, for calling one of his own players, a Starter of his, a “DUMB***.” A video from the broadcast – although no penalty was given on the play itself during the game – showed the senior, All-America linebacker who had a team-high 10 tackles against The Bulldogs, shoving his hand into the top of the facemask of Georgia running back Washaun Ealey – Knowshon Moreno.

DISNEYdawgs.com and your EXCUSES know no bounds.

??????? It is not his Bible where he apologizes for his correctness of his WORDS that is at ISSUE, ??????.

It is that the head football coach with annual total compensation of over $ 3, 500, 000 dollars representing The University of Georgia called his Starting Scholarship Recruit Bulldogs’ Football Player, an unprecedented “DUMB***.”

I still wonder exactly what Shawn Williams said to “rub it in the face” of Franklin. Ha ha we beat you?

Then, what did Franklin say to Grantham? Excuse me, Todd, if I may have a moment, one of your players hurt my feelings?

This is just a whole lot of crap.

“This is a whole lot of **** ” that Mark Richt called a Starting Bulldog, a “DUMB*** ” ? Spineless posters failing to call for Mark Richt to issue to his Scholarship Recruit, are once-again the real underlying reason why this football program spirals out of control with NO DISCIPLINE, when Mark Richt owes # 36 Shawn Williams – not for his wording – but for his intent, an APOLOGY.

Jeff, I am a Dawg fan that devours tons of information on everything Dawg and college sports/football. Strangely this is one of the few times we are in agreement on most of the issues in this situation. BUT, for some time it has been my observation that you’re writing is decidedly negative towards the UGA football program compared to the other writers covering sports. Even when comparing your writing on UGA to your writing on other schools/subjects there is no doubt of your negative leaning. Seldom do we see in your writing a fair and balance view of both sides of situations. What I as a professional also find Sad is the fact that you are Unwilling to admit it.

Twice now, I agree with Jeff. Grantham should be reprimanded and given one more chance or he is fired. He went way over the line and his language was that more like a drunken Sailor (apologies to the Sailor) than a UGA football coach. Richt needs to remind him that he is an ASSISTANT COACH whose job it is to line up under the authority of the HEAD COACH and live under the rules of UGA. This is college man–not the Dallas Cowboys. Come on! One of the best defensive games GA has played in the past few years was against Tech 2 years ago–when Martinez was gone and Richt and some grad assistants called the defense. Perhaps Richt could take over offense and defense.

Time for Richt to go. That’s it. Got to stand up for your guys. You can call 36 a DA to his face in private, but you never say that to the other coach who may also be a DA. One thing is clear – our coach is a DA.

Stop beating this dead horse just to stir up more hits on your blog, Schultz. It’s over, done with, finished. Oh, and why didn’t the SEC investigate the incident the week before the UGA game where a Bama player kicked a Vandy lineman in the face? I’m sure the reason was the same. Vandy lineman attempts to take out a knee; Bama player reacts by kicking Vandy lineman.

I’m still waiting on your article about James Franklin’s lack of protocol and professionalism in his behavior last Saturday night, Jeff. I know you’re scheduled to be on the Maury Povich show this morning, and that you’ve got a tight deadline to meet for the National Enquirer, so how ’bout just admitting you’re a poor journalist and lucky to have a job. This way you’ll actually be teeling the truth for once, and I will stop expecting you to be objective in your middle school quality essays. Deal? Come on, buddy, let’s bury the hatchet?

Boy I tell you what Bear Bryant, Shug Jordan, Vince Dooley, Frank Kush, Woody Hayes, or Bo Schembechler couldn’t coach today. They wouldn’t last one season with these wuss sportswriters and wuss TV commentators. If this is worth all this attention then the coaches I stated above would be in jail. Not counting pro coaches Vince Lombardi, Tom Landry, Chuch Knoll, Hank Stram and Don Shula. Man I am glad I came along win I did. This kind of stuff was part of the game. I love how a Georgia fan accuses the AJC of not letting this die and then talks about how he has researched websites from Nashville as recent as Wednesday. Remember Auburn and the firehose. What would football be like without the colorful Georgia fans who see nothing but violations of jealous opponents on them. Don’t look now guys but you may be closer to Vandy than to Alabama yourselves and it is this out of control player you recruit not higher education that has handicapped you.

Hit A Single those guys couldn’t coach these kids today. That Clemson linebacker would have whipped Woody Haynes all over the field if he had put a hand on him. Controlling these players is the big thing in modern football and they are not afraid of authority and most of them are twice as stupid as the players in those days. The combination is not pretty.

1) Kwame should know that he cant throw a punch in a game regardless of justification. He has to pay the penalty.

2) AJC has really taken this incident to the max and bashing UGA repeatedly.

3) Franklin is as guilty as any in this incident however even our own (ajc) are focusing on UGA bashing.

4) I do not hear the words “dumb ass” comming out of Richt in the video. Shabby reporting Schultz. Really stretching it here. I could hear “shouldnt a done that”. Cant really understand what he says.

5)Richt failed misrably in showing support for his team and coaches. Jumpin to conclusions before getting the facts. He should show public suport for the sake of team morale and recruits are listening. I’d have liked to have heard…
“Hey, Kwame violated a rule and will suffer and penalty, but you cant blame the guy for retaliating after such a cheap shot”

Keep in mind, this is the same CMR who suggested the team rush the field in FLA. Wrong?…Yes… but worth the penalty if it motivates the team?…. YES
