LIVE: Another win keeps Georgia in SEC East hunt

Another "partial sellout" flows through the gates at Vanderbilt Stadium.

NASHVILLE — If I’m a little slow getting this live blog started, it’s because I just ate about 27 pounds of barbecue — the combo plate of ribs, pulled pork and brisket — at the Wildhorse Saloon. Seriously, it’s some of the best Q I’ve ever had — and I’m sure I’ll be sweating it out in the middle of the night.

PETA did not endorse my lunch. But I will.

Most of you probably have been to Nashville at some point. For those who haven’t, I highly recommend it. Watching Steve Spurrier and South Carolina almost blow a game at Mississippi State is about the only thing that prevented this from being a perfect day. That is to say, they didn’t blow it. The Gamcocks got a touchdown pass from Connor Shaw to Alshon Jeffery with 3:50 left and escaped Starkville with a 14-12 win. A South Carolina loss and the door to a division title would’ve blown open today

Elvis, Elvis, everywhere. (How much BBQ could he put away?)

for the Bulldogs.

South Carolina already has endured turnover at the quarterback position (Stephen Garcia was kicked off the team) and Saturday saw running back Marcus Lattimore suffer a sprained knee in the fourth quarter. After the game, Spurrier told the media Lattimore’s injury “could be serious. He could be out a while.”  The Gamecocks are off next week before resuming Oct. 29 with consecutive SEC games against Tennessee (road), Arkansas (road) and Florida (home).

The Opryland grotto. The river is completely natural.

The Opryland grotto. The river is completely natural.

So going into tonight’s game against Vanderbilt, the Dogs (3-1) trail South Carolina by (4-1) by a half-game in the SEC Eastern Division, with the Gamecocks still holding the tiebreaker edge. Florida (2-2, 4-2) kicks off against Auburn tonight at the same time as the Georgia game.

For Georgia, this game against Vandy really is about making the Florida game mean something. Losing the first two games of the season to Boise State and South Carolina basically left the Dogs with little to no room for error.

That's my wife on the left, posing with Steve Spurrier, I think.

It’s understandable if you’re still not sure what to think of this team. Since starting 0-2, the Dogs have won four straight over Coastal Carolina, Mississippi, Mississippi State and Tennessee by a composite score of 130-35 The three SEC wins have come over schools that entered the weekend with a combined conference record of 0-7.

If Georgia struggles tonight, something is wrong. The Commodores have lost their last two SEC games (Alabama, South Carolina) by a combined 55-3. Their offense is awful, their defense decent. It shouldn’t take a lot of points to win this.

For what it’s worth, Georgia is 51-18-2 all-time in the series and has won 15 of the last 16 meetings. The Dogs’ have won nine straight in Nashville since their last loss in 1991 (27-25 under Ray Goff).

OK, that’s it for now. I’m going to do some laps. I’ll be back shortly for the duration.

You Dawg fans are all the same. All you do is bring up the fact that GT is Georgia’s yellow haired step child. I’m trying to validate my stupid comments and you guys have to bring up that “little” detail all the time. Ya’ll just shut up or I’m going to Call PJ.

Unfortunately, Butler and the other guy( can’t remember his name right now)on the UGA after show didn’t see that and didn’t correct the caller. As soon as Grantham realized what was happening and he was storming up to the Vandy coach the camera shot changed. Just when it was getting good. Ha!

its amazing listening to people calling in to the radio show who saw the same end of the game and somehow missed the Vandy Coach instigating that issue

Why is it that UGA has so many rivals yet only one continues to throw the 2011 UGA schedule in Dawgnation’s face? I don’t see Gators, Tigers, Vols, Cocks, or anyone else bashing UGA’s schedule. Hmmm, maybe because those are all SEC teams and the one rival who is in the weakest BCS football conference is the jealous fanbase who is mad because they lost to a crappy ACC team. Funny, UGA’s two loses came against a Top 5 team and the division leader. Yeah, that’s weak…

Omg this is so frustrating listening to the radio show. Some guy just called in saying it was all Granthams fault. NO IT WASN’T . He did not start the dust up.

Jeff. Please tell me what in the wide world of sports was Bacardirum Rambo doing taking a knee on that INT? Guy had 50 yards of clear sailing ahead of him. Never ASSUME anything! As evidenced by final 15 seconds. Sheesh! :(

There is absolutely no valid excuse for a coach to assault another one on the field.

Let us know when anyone was assaulted. Idiot comment.

Uh, notice I said assault NOT battery. Please look up the definition on Wiki if not the legal definition. You have just declared your idiocy and this is not rasslin’. I’m glad the trailer park gets the internet now but you really should refrain from displaying your ignorance in a public forum.

Can any of the rest of you imagine this type of behavior being tolerated by Dooley? Dodd? Even the Bear?

Coach Grantham got upset at the end of the game because he had a defensive player down on the field and the Vandy players were swarming all around him, showing no respect for his injury until the team trainers and physicians could make an assessment and get him up and off the field.

Apparantly no chass for them doing that, and Grantham had every right to point that out to the Vandy head coach. Just my opinion of what I think happened, and unless I’m told otherwise, I think he was right to do what he did.

Go Dawgs!

Thank you CTG for standing up for you players. Franklin is no different than Chizik – helicopters, limos, … tools who can’t bring in players without some type of bogus bs

You are just a classless Tech fan who is trying to take out your frustration out of UGA because we won, and you lost.

Your despise UGA; you Urininate of A Dawg posting handle says it all.

Remember you use to post as 5150 POAD until the AJC make your change the Pi$$ On A Dawg moniker.

IMO, you are a classless, demeaning loser. ..

Go Dawgs! and see in November!

Cheap shot par excellence showing Vandy Stadium way before the game with just a few beginning to straggle in. You know there was a full stadium at game time.

BTW, if the Vandy player had been able to scoop up the blocked punt successfully, you Dawgs would’ve gotten your butts beat tonight. And the next to last play, that pass in the end zone, should’ve been caught… and that would’ve also beat your butts. That was a good game to watch… back’n'forth!!

Yeah and if UGA wouldn’t have had 4 TOs and a missed FG against SC they’d be undefeated in the SEC.

This just in……Georgia Tech, ranked no. 84, is the leading school in Georgia, ahead of Emory at 114 and the University of Georgia at 385, according to the rankings compiled by U.S. News and World Report.
