Falcons, Jackets, Dogs win (Lies! Lies, says Spurrier!)

chalkboard

We will commence with this week’s blue chip indicators immediately following Steve Spurrier’s testimony to his superiors regarding the stolen strawberries aboard the U.S.S. Caine. Ssssh. I think he’s losing it …

“Lies! I tried to run the ship properly by the book but they fought me at every turn! They encouraged the crew to go around scoffing at me and spreading wild rumors about steaming in circles! And then old yellow stain! I was to blame for Lt. Merrick’s incompetence and poor seamanship. Lt. Merrick was the perfect officer but not Captain Queeg. Ah, but the strawberries! That’s where I had them! They laughed at me and made jokes, but I proved beyond the shadow of a doubt, and with geometric logic, that a duplicate key to the wardroom icebox did exist! I … I … I …”

I post this for no reason other than fact I stumbled upon a "50 dogs in Star Wars" costumes list at BestWeekEver.TV.

Darth Dawg! (I post this only because I stumbled on a "Dogs in Star Wars costumes" list at BWE.TV).

Come back to us, Steve.

I never really noticed the resemblance between Spurrier and Captain Queeg until this week, when he declined to speak at a news conference with a certain columnist in the room and later (after four years of Enabling 101) kicked Stephen Garcia off the team (and don’t think the distraction of one clown act didn’t have something to do with the other).

Spurrier needs to bow disgracefully, unless he desires another oversigned recruiting class, after which he’ll deny such a practice exists and just assume everybody’s out to get him.

Where was I? Ah, yes. The strawberries! (Back to that creep in a minute.)

In less riveting matters, Georgia plays Vanderbilt this week. Captain Vanilla’s Dogs have won four straight. The objective at Vandy is to make the Florida game mean something. Todd Grantham’s defense has been strong lately. Here’s a thank you gift: Vandy has scored three points in the last two weeks.

Dogs are favored by 11. Lies! Actually, the truth, and I’m not completely comfortable with that. Georgia wins but take Vandy plus 11.

Watch as Steve Spurrier takes out his Chinese therapy balls

“Captain Insano shows no mercy” (Bobby Boucher)

Tech at Virginia: Al Groh returns to Charlottesville. I’ll sum up his sentimental thoughts: “Phhhhttt.” So what’s a 12th ranked, 6-0 team doing on ESPNU (now seen in 12 homes) with the broadcast team of Pam Ward and Dan Hawkins? The Jackets will start to get more eyes in the next few weeks (Miami, Clemson, Virginia Tech). For now: The 7½ is covered.

South Carolina at Mississippi State: Nick Saban told the media he was limiting access to quarterback A.J. McCarron but added, “I’m not gonna pull a Steve Spurrier on you!” Even he’s mocking Queeg! Would love to pick an upset here. Can’t do it. Gamecocks cover 2½.

Thanks to alert reader Hal for sending this along from Cafe Press.

Alert reader Hal sent this along (via CafePress.com)

LSU at Tennessee: Les Miles says there’s no quarterback controversy between Jarrett Lee and Jordan Jefferson. But when you win three conference games by scores of 19-6, 35-7 and 41-11, who’s going to squawk? Vols crushed (16 is covered).

Florida at Auburn: The Gators won their first four games, then in consecutive weeks (Alabama, LSU) looked like a chipmunk yelling to the Winnebago, “Stop, or I’ll use my super powers!” Smack. But I sense a rise! Gators win and cover 2.

Clemson at Maryland: I’ve blown a couple of picks expecting this Dabo Swinney team to fold (like normal). I’ll stop now. (Here we go: Murphy’s Law about to hit me like a brick.) Tigers cover 8½

NFL Fridgepack

Just in case your forgot what Arthur Blank and Thomas Dimitroff looked like when they were happy.

In case your forgot what Arthur Blank, Thomas Dimitroff looked like when they were happy. (Curtis Compton)

Panthers at Falcons: The NCAA has cleared all potential legal obstacles, so Cam Newton can cross the state border. Newton (322 yards per game) is a threat, but so is everybody against the Birds. The offense goes comatose in the second half. Julio Jones has a bad hammy. Confident? No. But I’ll give the Falcons points for desperation. They’ll cover 4.

Eagles at Redskins: The Eagles have a league-high 15 turnovers. Their offense is like watching a blender with the the top off. Philly covers 1½.

Tim Tebow: He makes his first start of the season next week. Until then, he’s available for exorcisms and resurrections.

Texans at Ravens: With Indy walking the green mile, Houston has a chance to win the AFC Central. But the last two losses should  stop any premature canonization of Matt Schaub. Baltimore covers 7½.

49ers at Lions: Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson already have hooked up for nine touchdowns. Imagine the bowl possibilities if they had gone to the same school. Detroit covers 4.

Spread of the week: Green Bay really hates the Falcons for some reason, so much so that I wouldn’t be stunned at a letdown. Besides, I’m a sucker for 15 points in an NFL game. Packers win but give me the Rams and 15.

Don't blame me. I Googled betting and this picture showed up.

Last week (Solid. Of course): 9-2 straight up, 7-4 against the line.

Overall (only awesome): 51-21 straight up; 47-24-1 against the line.

“Sack Schultz” contest: Last week’s winners, Diane Feeney of Roswell and Bruce Jones of Mount Aukum, Calif., both went 15-0 and won the LSU tiebreaker. But they cheat. We’ve got two leaders at 80-10 overall for the Hawaii trip and Georgia-Georgia Tech tickets.

Jeff….

No bigger fan or supporter of the Gators than I…..but I have a hard time having any faith that a freshman QB (Driskell or Brissett) can lead the Gators to victory over Auburn. I hope I am wrong….as it will make the Georgia game a lot more interesting with Brantley supposedly returning for that game.

Two weeks ago (against NCState) I said that the Jackets wouldn’t cover the 10 (actually 9 1/2 on some spreads). That was a push. Last week, I said that the Jackets wouldn’t cover against MD. That was a “win.” This week I’m saying it first. UVa straight up over Jackets.

Take the Dawgs and lay the points. Vandy is a joke.

Garcia’s the biggest pinhead to ever take a snap in the SEC. His dad all but admitted that he went on a bender and got caught in a random whiz quiz.Spurrier may just be trying to keep his team together by saying “It’s us against The State” (The State being the unreadable rag that is “sold” on Columbia S.C.) .

Spurrier, to me , has earned the benefit of the doubt. Garcia and The State have not.

On rare occasions it is safe to say the Dawgs will cover. This is one of them. It will be at least 3 scores. (Jeff, you admit Vandy’s offense is terrible and the Dawgs D is good, yet you say take Vandy and the points? Hmmm….)

Secondly, LSU’s strength is their D, not their offense. Even though they scored 41 (in Baton Rouge) on UF, they only managed 19 points in Starkville. knoxville isn’t any easier than Starkvegas, Jeff. UT keeps it respectable. 24-10.

Me thinks Jeff is speaking from both sides of his anus too. Bad offense on one team, good defense on the other more often than not equates to few points for the bad offense side. Georgia scores some points in this one, Vandy, not so much. Take Georgia to beat the spread 34-6

When Spurrier tires of Garcia, he gets him kicked out of school. I have no love for Garcia, the kid is an obvious idiot. So much talent to go to waste but, The Old Bawl Sack hanging on to him despite his “problems” tosses him away like yesterday’s refuse when he discovers Connor Shaw can do as bad as Garcia. I wonder what happen to Spurrier’s sympathy for “the good kid” that Garcia was. What a hypocrite

Intangibles of LSU vs UT :

1. UT knows they are playing for nothing but pride, and they are never short of that in Knoxville.
2. Dooley must be starting to think the seat warmer is on, albeit on the low setting
3. LSU has no rivalry with UT and very easily could be surprised by a quick uppercut to start the game
4. Matt Simms is no Tyler Bray but he’s got to be thinking this is his last opportunity to show he can play

@Joey, 45 may be a bit of a stretch. I will say 38-0 instead. Vandy is ranked 117th in total offense. I would be surprised if they even score in the game. UGA is due for a decent offense performance and they will probably want to win decisively since they really haven’t all year. I don’t think Alabama is ever a good judge of point spreads. They almost always score less then they could. As for who might beat GT. I am about 70% confident against Miami, 50% against VT, and about 30% against Clemson. I agree with Octoman. Put Mark Richt in that pile too. Georgia practically writes the copy for these guys at AJC. They take 11 supermen or dream team whatever they call themselves and then look very normal. They beat a subpar Tenn. team and they are now back in the pink. 3rd and 53 yards to go, got to be a record, not a negative word on that subject written in this paper and now they play Vanderbilt. Does any team in the SEC have an easier schedule than Georgia, how do they do it. There are so many good teams yet they play a ACC type strength schedule and get SEC credits.

Bloggers don’t sell Vandy short. Their run defense is ranked 4th in the SEC and leads the conference with 14 interceptions. The Dawgs better be ready or they may find themself in a dogfight.

gtne80

NCState figured it out and Maryland copied it. The key to stopping the option is to make the QB keep the ball. After enough carries, if he’s not out of the game, he’s no threat to throw the ball accurately, so you can cheat the safeties up to stop the run. It’s not rocket science. UVa, Clemson, VT, Miami and UGa have the defensive athletes to pull it off. The over/under on when Washington is out with an injury is 2 games.

Of course Tech fans should be pleased that the Virginia is televised on ESPNU (if the cable provider carries it). For first time ESPN3 users, you can watch several ESPN3 games simultaneously in windows on the monitor. If Auburn is fast enough on defense to tamp down the production of Demps and Rainey, then they’ll be powerful enough running against Florida. Great column this week. Love the Caine Mutiny references and the GT Tee.
In games this week:
UGA covers – Vandy won’t score more than 14 and Bobo hands the ball to Crowell 25 times
GT wins but doesn’t cover – late Q4 defensive lapse makes it close
So Carolina covers
LSU gives a beat down to UT – covers easily
The Gators get their mojo back – they are better than they showed in the last 2 weeks – LSU and ALA will make you look bad

Don’t send my boy to MIT
The dying mother said,
Don’t send my boy to Emory
I’d rather see him dead,
But send my boy to Georgia Tech
‘Tis better than Cornell.
And as for the University of Georgia
I’d rather see him in hell!

chorus
To Hell, to Hell, to Hell with Georgia,
To Hell, to Hell, to Hell with Georgia,
To Hell, to Hell, to Hell with Georgia,
The cesspool of the South!

Mine eyes have seen the glory
Of the stomping of the Dogs
We will teach the poor dumb farmboys
They should stick to sloppin’ hogs
When the Jackets are triumphant
There will be a mighty cheer
We’ll do the same next year!

On the Field between the hedges
There arose a mighty stench,
In the Dogs’ machine the engineers
Had thrown a monkey wrench.
When the Jackets are triumphant
We will raise a mighty yell,
Them Dogs can GO TO HELL!!

Mine eyes have seen the glory
Of the N.C. Double-A
They’re investigating GA players
To see how much they’re paid
After counting all the cars
And the loans Alumni made,
They out pay FSU

Jeff, you are oh so predictable. Jump to defend a weasel like Ron Morris and bash Coach Spurrier because he said what we’ve all wished a coach would say to a weak, cowardly reporter who does nothing but write negative content about the local university. Of course you would defend him. Have you actually read the crap Morris has written over the years? He trys to tear down Gamecock coaches and players with every column…and finally Spurrier had enough, and god bless him for saying it. You think just because you’re a “journalist” you should get a free pass? Write anything you want, be as hateful as you want, and no one is allowed to respond to you?

No my friend. If you have read Morris’ BS over the years and have any backbone you would have applauded what Spurrier did. Morris prints lies and slander and is a cowardly little man…but heavens forbid a coach push back on a precious media guy right? Maybe you and other Morris defenders should find your manhood and quit acting like poor victims of the mean ball coach.

And a quick thought since you’ve ripped Garcia many, many times…for getting suspended over drinking beer! Not a DUI or assault like UGA or Clemson or LSU players (Jordan Jefferson). He got drunk…that’s it! That makes him a terrible person?? He’s also a college graduate…how many SEC football players actually achieve that status? Yeah Jeff, Garcia is a real menace to society…what a thug!

If you’re gonna dish it out, you better be able to take it. Based on your blog today, doesn’t sound like you and Morris can do that?

The only thing that will keep Cam Newton from 600 yards passing in one NFL game is the 60 minute time limit this Sunday. Question is, “Does 48 points beat the Falcon offense?”

I say, “Yes. Easily.” After this Sunday, I don’t expect the Falcons will be favored again this year.

This may well have already been mentioned (I didn’t have time to read through all the posts) but Peter King is picking the Panthers over the Falcons this weekend. Considering how closely the Panthers have played some very good teams, I agree that it bodes ill for a wobbly-looking Falcons team. If the Falcons do lose Sunday they may not only fall into last place in the NFC South; they could begin a death-spiral that would land them in the ranks of the lottery teams.

Oops, then again they already traded next year’s number one (and a LOT more) in the Julio Jones deal. In other words, win now or don’t expect to turn things around for a good while. Fasten your seatbelts and assume the position, Falcons fans…we may be about to crash hard (again).

Have been to Doak-Campbell once. That was when the Jackets beat the Noles in the thunderstorm delayed game. Had to walk about a mile to the stadium and by the time I got to Will Call my tongue was dragging the pavement……….. Not from the walk, but from the scores of FSU chics working that trashy cowgirl look. Enough to give an old married dude hairy palms. Interesting how each school’s women have their own discernible micro-style. Being a GT fan, I admit a deficiency in that dept. Not too many engineering hotties, but there are a few. But then again, the Cheetah is sitting right there by The Flats. Can’t get much better than that if you’re in the mood for some assorted eye candy. Sure beats a grease bomb from The Varsity. What do ya have…what do ya have… what do ya have !

Hope to see the Jackets dominate the Cavs. Unfortunately, something tells me it will be another struggle. Jackets better get clicking on all cylinders, because the schedule is about to get kicked up a few notches for the rest of the season.

So Jeff, I want to be sure that I understand you position on the Spurrier issue: apparently is it perfectly acceptable for a “journalist” to publish whatever they choose, truthful or not, but it is a problem for the coach to exclude that “journalist” from the conversation or he will be crucified in the press by other “journalists”. I watched the meeting and Spurrier specifically said that he did not have an issue with this “journalist” being negative to him or criticzing the program, but he had a problem with the journalist lying about what happened and publishing it. Not sure how this is fair. Or why you have any issue with it.

There can be no question that Spurrier is a great college football coach. An offensive genius. Review the man’s record. He won at Duke for goodness sake, with no defense.

I can only surmise that he is catching flack at the ajc because isn’t a hollow, carbon copy, yes man (repeating the same old tired lines/cliches at press conferences) and because he doesn’t suck up to big city reporters like Bradley and Schultz.

Vanderbilt wins a close one, bringing hope to decent people everywhere that goodness and intelligence can occasionally triumph over sleaze and stupidity.

“There can be no question that Spurrier is a great college football coach.”

I agree. Thank goodness he’s a real coach, not a hypocritical overpaid phony like Mark Richt.

“Tim Tebow: He makes his first start of the season next week. Until then, he’s available for exorcisms and resurrections.”

That statement is beyond contempt.

You would never dare say that about another religion other than Christianity.

I don’t get it. Spurrier should have sacked Garcia long ago. He’s still one of the best college coaches in the game.. God I wish the Dawgs had him

Akil Hawkins, the outstanding 6′3″ 270 lbs OL for Fayette County is being recruited by Auburn and GT, but of course not by UGA. Hopefully, he will stay in state, but again UGA selects paper tigers rather than the real ones!

Vanderbilt upsets UGA, giving the world hope and joy that intelligence and ethical behavior will sometimes win out over a low class football f-a-c-t-o-r-y.

Haven’t you heard? It’s not that Georgia can’t score – they’re just playing conservative.

All Saints in Glory

Attention, everyone. We will now observe a moment of silence in memory of Saint Jan Kemp, the courageous lady who exposed the shameful practices at UGA that were initiated and carried out by slimeball Vince Dooley. Dooley’s image as a coach and a nice guy were forever shattered during the trial, not to mention the one million dollars that UGA had to pay Saint Jan. These practices of recruiting dummies and coddling them for four years, them tossing them out like garbage, are still going on, but at least the world knows what’s happening in Athens now.

And now, the moment of silence…
