Mike Mularkey is getting heat for regression of Matt Ryan and the offense. (Curtis Compton/AJC)
FLOWERY BRANCH – Let’s start with the two biggest mistakes of the Falcons’ offseason.
One was not adequately replacing punter Michael Koenen after he fled for free-agent riches in Tampa. The Falcons drafted Matt Bosher and for some reason have kept him, as if holding out hopes that on one glorious Sunday, the bingo card will hit. The other was letting guard Harvey Dahl leave in free agency. It robbed the offensive line of its toughest, nastiest, limb-ripping creature, which is a problem when management is still waiting for left tackle Sam Baker to evolve into a species more intimidating than a Peep.
But that doesn’t explain everything.
The Falcons are 2-3. Even their most impressive win suddenly isn’t looking so impressive (Philadelphia is 1-4). There is no shortage of problems on defense, but that wasn’t the primary issue in Sunday night’s meltdown against Green Bay. The offense produced two touchdowns and 140 yards in the first two drives, then seemed to be vaporized. The rest of the game produced five punts, four three-and-outs, two interceptions and zero points.
There was a similar fizzle the week before in Seattle. The Falcons led 24-7 at halftime, then produced two field goals in the second half.
Bottom-line numbers: The Falcons, who promised us pyrotechnics, haven’t even provided improvement. They rank 19th in total offense (338.4 yards), 23rd in rushing (98.8), 22nd in pass-efficiency rating (79.9) and 20th in scoring (20.8) — all drops from a year ago. Some of the struggles can be attributed to the wailing wall up front. Quarterback Matt Ryan has been sacked 14 times in five games. He was dropped 23 times all of last season. He also has been less accurate and consistent in his decision-making.
But production or lack thereof generally starts with the guy pulling the strings. In this case, that’s Mike Mularkey.
It’s an offensive coordinator’s job to put players in the best position to win games. Whether the Falcons have become too predictable in play-calling, or players aren’t executing, or for whatever reason can’t stay focused for four quarters, it’s still about coaching and getting players to perform.
Here’s the most remarkable stat that has come out of the Falcons’ slow start: They’ve been outscored 61-13 in the third quarter. When presented those numbers Tuesday, Mularkey’s response was, “We try to score every time we get the ball, so that’s irrelevant to me.”
Should it be?
Coaches make halftime adjustments. The logical conclusion is defensive coaches are adjusting to Falcons’ play-calling and the offense then sputters. In the second halves of five games this season, the offensive has produced 0, 2, 1, 0 and 0 touchdowns. Is that just a coincidence?
Mularkey dismissed the adjustments theory, saying, “That’s the outside sources who would say that.” (I would be the outside source here.) He then pointed to penalties and breakdowns, not play-calling, as reasons for the scoring drop.
“The general public and yourself would not know that unless you studied film, knew what the game plan was and knew what was happening in the first half and not the second half,” he said.
He’s right. I don’t study game film. I also can’t rebuild a transmission, but I’m pretty sure I can tell when one blows up.
Mularkey doesn’t completely absolve himself of culpability (”We have to clean things up, and it starts with me.”) But he doesn’t look at tape on Mondays and declare, “Wow, did I blow that call,” at least not that he admits.
“We’re not doing it consistently now because something has happened in one place or another that has made that drive stall,” he said. “It’s not just penalties or a mistake. It’s a drop, a sack or something else. The same plays are being called.
“You ask if I second-guess myself? No, I don’t. Not like you guys do.”
He’s not too sensitive.
Mularkey actually managed a smile when asked if he was feeling heat.
“This is heat?” he cracked.
That was to be expected from someone who was a head coach in Buffalo (he resigned after two years). But until the turnaround comes, the questions won’t stop, and it’s only going to get hotter.

Long time Falcon fan here…………The Truth on the 2011 Season is it got off to a bad start and its been an uphill climb since training camp started ! Hate to say this but the club is jinxed this year and nowhere near competitive enough to win many ballgames ! If they even get it all sorted out and start winning a string of games I doubt that they will be enough games left to do much considering they had tougher schedule this year !
As for all these trolls and the junk that gets posted by them its just their way of trying to aggivate us Falcon Fans and they are full of it anyway !
I hope for best this year but expect the worst to happen so let the Season play out !

I am counting on Arthur Blank sending out a letter at the end of the season like John Schuerholz did to apologize to all the Falcons Season ticket holders for the product they put on the field and letting his coaches talk with arrogance to the press. Fire all of em now. First it was Mike Smith…saying we just have to figure it out. You should have done that in the preseason Coach….now its the OC saying its irrelevant that we are outscored in the 3rd quarter 61-13. What a pompous prick? They wouldn’t know what coaching looks like if it nipped them in the butt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In THREE of our 5 games, we’ve only 14 pts or less. And in those 5 games, only 2 did we score an offensive td in the second half. This SCREAMS an inability to make offensive halftime adjustments. Unless this is fixed NOW, we’ll be up S–T Creek without a paddle…………….

Unfortunately, Mike Smith does not have the heart of a championship coach. He’s a good and solid head coach, but the Falcons WILL NOT WIN a championship with him. He suffers from the same disease that most NFL head coachs suffer from – Not coaching to win, but rather coaching to ensure employability!!! With Mike Smith, the Falcons will be a consistent contender for a playoff spot maybe win a Division title every few years, but no NFL championships.
Great coaches, coach to win which means seeking to destroy their opponents or at the very least not taking their foot off the throats. Go for the Kill!!
Again, UGA faces the same fate because CMR is a mirror image of Mike Smith – nice guy, solid coach, but not a killer!
Georgia Tech will be the first of the three to win a championship even with inferior talent because Paul Johnson has been a part of 5 National Championships as an OC and/or HC. He possessions the Killer Instinct. His offense is probably a year ago and the defense as well.
Mark it down, you heard it here first!!!

There needs to be some serious questions asked of Matt Ryan as well. He is 21st in passer rating, and 24th in yds. per attempt. His longest completion is 49 yds. which places him 28th, and (as noted) he is 16th in completion percentage, with Mike Vick ahead of him. He is also tied for second with 6 int’s. Ryan needs to step it up and lead–with his play and his attitude.

Sometimes an offensive coordinator’s philosophy simply isn’t a good match for the set of skills out on the field. History has shown many times where not only quarterbacks but entire offenses suddenly found a new gear under a new voice, and I believe when all is said and done it will have to happen for the Falcons. Get someone who’s truly willing to use the skill sets out there to stretch the field and who actually has a “Plan B” when opponents make adjustments and things should change in a big and positive way.
For now though, this Falcons team reminds me way too much of the 2011 Braves to inspire confidence. Too much excuses-making and refusal to adapt to changing conditions or needs.

Another poor stat for Ryan (as reported by ESPN’s Pat Yasinskas): “ESPN Stats & Information points out that Matt Ryan is just 2-of-14 (14.3 percent) of passes of 21 yards or more. Only Kerry Collins (0-of-7) has been less accurate on long passes.
What’s really perplexing about this is that the Falcons traded up in the draft to get Julio Jones to help stretch the defense. The plan was to take coverage away from Roddy White and allow Harry Douglas to line up in the slot, where he’s at his best.
But here’s the real kicker on this. Ryan wasn’t all that bad on throws of 21 yards or more last season. He completed 46.2 percent of those passes, which was above the league average (41.2 percent).”

there’s nothing wrong with the falcons offense. the main thing to address is the inconsistent officiating that the team gets when they play certain teams.the only minor problem i see is michael turner should learn from an old fundamental sound coach and run north and south and stop trying to take everything lateral. his strengtyh is his power, straight ahead running. sometimes he falls in love with trying to outrun people from sideline to sideline.your positive yards are upfield instead of sideline.

Matt mentioned a problem with the headset for one play where he couldn’t get a play in from the sidelines. So instead of burning a timeout he called his own play. And what did he call? Why a play down the field to JJ which although incomplete was pretty much on target. Point is, that Smitty has handcuffed this explosive offense and won’t allow a down field aggressive passing game. The winners of the last 5 or 6 SB’s have all been aggressive, down the field passing teams.
Smitty’s days are numbered. It’s not the OC – he would be more aggressive if Smitty would let him.

You nailed two of the biggest off-season mistakes, but left out the third. I admire you to sticking to your guns on the Julio Jones trade debacle, but it is becoming more and more head-scratching by the minute. We had way too many other holes to fill, yet we still mortgaged two drafts to pick up a wr that we don’t even use consistently. @CDOG- IM SORRY BRO YOU NEED TO “OPEN YOUR EYES”. EVERYBODY KNOW THAT IN THE 2ND HALF OF THE GAME THE FALCONS OFFENSE CAME TO A SCREECHING HALT!!!!! TO BLAME THIS GAME ON THE OFFICIALS IS SOO ABSURD!!!!! THE OFFICIALS CALLED A BAD GAME FOR BOTH TEAMS, YET DID YOU SEE THE GREEN BAY PACKER FOLD????? NOOOO, YOU KNOW WHY??? BECAUSE THEY KNOW HOW TO ADJUST THEIR GAMEPLAN AND EXECUTE CLUTCH PLAYS WHEN NEEDED TO. WHY CAN’T THE FALCONS DO THAT CDOG??? BECAUSE MIKE SMITH AND MIKE MULARKEY DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO WHEN PLAN “A” IS BLOWN UP. THEY DON’T HAVE A PLAN “B”, LIKE THE PACKERS DID!!!!!
LET ME FRESHEN UP YOUR MIND:
1ST HALF- FALCONS WERE RUNNING SCREEN PASSES, REVERSES, EFFICIENT PLAY-ACTIONS, SHUFFLE SCREENS, SLANTS. THEREFORE OUR RUNNING GAME WAS VERY EFFICIENT!!!!!
2ND HALF- ALL THEY DID WAS RUN IT UP THE MIDDLE!!!!!!! 3 AND OUTS THE REST OF THE GAME AND IT WAS HISTORY!!!! ITS NOT THAT HARD TO FATHOM, JUST DO WHAT YOU DID SUCCESSFUL IN THE 1ST HALF LIKE SCREEN PLAYS, SLANTS, ANYTHING!!!!
IF YOU CAN’T SEE THAT OUR OFFENSE LET US DOWN YESTERDAY YOU ARE NOT WATCHING THE GAME CORRECTLY!!!!! TO SAY IT WAS THE OFFICIALS IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST EXCUSES I HAVE HEARD!!! THERE ARE NO EXCUSES FOR HOW THE ATLANTA FALCONS PERFORMED ON SUNDAY AND EVERYBODY KNOWS IT!!!
CDOG FROM A FAN TO ANOTHER WE HAVE TO EXPECT TO THE FALCONS TO PLAY THEIR VERY BEST FOR 60 MINUTES!!! WE ALL DESERVE THAT!!! THE PACKERS HAD LOTS OF PENALTIES AND THEY OVERCAME THEM, WE HAVE TO DO THE SAME!!!

I won’t be renewing my tickets if Mike Mularkey is still with the Falcons next year. The play calling is terrible. No screen passes or quick slants to slow down the pass rush. Too many 25 yard pass attempts on 3rd down and 3 yards to go for the first down. Bunch formations, then trying to run thru the middle of it all with Michael Turner who runs like he’s dragging a piano behind him.
Dahl should still be with the team. Bosher has shown me that he is not good enough to be punting in the NFL. Why Dimitroff wasted a draft pick on him is very puzzling to me. Dunta Robinson’s cover skills are extremely poor. He is never in postion to make a play on the ball. The soft zone is yielding way to many yards. Way too many drives. And way too many TD’s. It would not surprise me to see Carolina take us to the woodshed this Sunday. Everybody likes to brag about us being 13-3 last year…….but you have to remember how many of those games were way close and won in the last minute of the game.

The Falcons could salvage some pride in this season if they played with spirit. To do that they would have to be more aggressive on the defensive pass rush, in an attempt to help a bad secondary, and they would have to give up on the run and start doing wildcat stuff, in addition to doing onside kicks when ahead, faking punts when 4th and less than 5, etc. However, Mike “Stick in the Mud” Smith cannot stand that much excitement. That is why Koenon said there was nothing but tension in the clubhouse. To salvage the Falcon’s season they would have to fire Mike Smith and go with an interim head coach, like Mularky, to prove he has the ability to win without any restraints crimping his style.

The stuff about Dahl doesn’t hold water. Look at Green Bay. They have had major changes to their offensive line and they still can pass and run draws. This is the year of the injury because of the lockout. If Dahl had stayed, think of him blowing out a knee and now the O-line has to suck it up without him. With J. Jones gimpy, maybe the offense can look at more screens, draws, slants, and quick stuff to keep Ryan injury free?

I guess there is something to this week armed Matt Ryan complaining. From the combine report on Ryan before he became an NFL player:
http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/matt-ryan?id=310#tabs:tab-analysis
Negatives: Lacks the arm strength to challenge the deep secondary, as his long throws tend to flutter or hang up long enough for defenders to attack the ball in flight (see 2006 Brigham Young and Wake Forest contests and 2007 Massachusetts and Virginia Tech games)…Needs to do a better job of planting his feet to get more zip behind his long throws…Has inconsistent and adequate velocity when firing the ball deep…Weakest area of his game is exposed when he attempts to fire the deep ball, as the pass tends to lack accuracy…Runs too hot and cold when trying to air the ball out, as his long throws lack trajectory…Needs to improve timing on his deep throws, as he is very inconsistent hitting those targets coming out of cuts…

“The poster who stated:
Matt Ryan == Chad Pennington
was apparently right. I have to believe though that Ryan would be a better QB with better coaching which brings us to the problems with Mularky. Until Ryan gets better in the vertical passing game, Falcons aren’t going to be Superbowl threat.”

It hurts me to say this but the problem with the team is Matt Ryan. I’ve watched every game of his since he came in the league and the fact is he can’t throw past 15- 20 yards with any accuracy. As much as I have defended him to all his critics, deep down I have known this to be fact and this year just proves the point. Every deep ball is over thrown, floats like a punt in the air for day (Julio‘s catch in Tampa) or he just throw out of bounds. People should stop with the Manning comparisons Matt is closer to Chad Pennington.
We spent half the draft on a Wr but we got a QB that can’t get him the ball, this is like Calvin at GT all over again,
Stop complaining about Turner, backs are only good for 3-4 years, especially over used ones
If Matt can’t make the deep throw and we know he can’t run a F@#$$ WEST COAST OFF.

MR has NO ARM STRENGHTH. It’s clear the coaches do not trust his arm past 12 yards. And the 5 yard, quick slant thing…….I’ve wondered to my self why we don’t do that more often? A complete waste of Harry Douglas. And soon to be Julio Jones. I now have come to the conclusion……Matt Ryan can not get us there.

Mediocre QB + Mediocre Offense + Mediocre Defense + Mediocre coaching = Mediocre Team!!
Carolina will set record breaking numbers against this team come Sunday! Carolina is a vastly improved since the arrival of Cam Newton and new head coach Ron Riveria..You could not have paid me to watch them as long as John Fox was the Coach..Now, I Look foward to catching their games every week whether on radio or tv!! J.Fox and his crew were just too predictable from week to week..they did NOT know how to coach to win..Nor did they know how to best utilize their players! They are a very agressive team now and they EXPECT to win every game..
The point i’m trying to make here is this: As long as M.S. is head coach, his teams will be very predictable and beatable. Why you ask?? Because he is too dam hard headed to change the direction this team is heading..he is going to stick to what got him here for the past 3 years!
He is loyal to a fault with his assistant coaches and his players..
Mike Shula would be a 1,000 percent improvement over M.M..think that’s gonna happen? Hell no!
At this stage of the year since M.R. is DIGRESSING..Why not insert #2 QB it would be an INSTANT improvement! From where I stand M.R. does NOT give us the best chance to win and he’s proven that since December 2010..
Oh well, I could go on but its futile..Go Carolina!

Matt won the games in the final quarter last year because the line could pass block long enough for him to get the ball out. His reads do seem slower this year. I’m not sure if that’s accurate but if it is then you have to wonder about plays called, receivers running good routes, or Matt looking for the next hit because of piss poor blocking. And the Falcons are getting predictable. With the speed at wideout, I don’t know why we can’t hit these guys in full stride every other play. With Gonzales, Matt has so many targets I can’t believe everyone is well covered. It’s gotta be the line play.

Again…(1) let Matt go to the no huddle and stay in it. WE move the ball when he does. We don’t when he doesn’t. (2) Let Mularkey script the whole game. When we ran the first few possesions scripted it was nice. I was like who replaced our OC with one that will run screens, reverses, and multiple sets. He may can script but he can’t adjust / play call worth a flip. (3) Fire Mularkey and get someone that is open to change and using his personnel correctly.
O Line…Baker continues to totally whiff on rushers even when they are called out to him before the play. Like when Matt called 55 and no one blocked him.
How many times do we pass on first down. Bet you it’s less than 10% after scripted plays run out. The other team knows it. How about playing to win instead of not to loose when we have the lead. That’d be nice.
