Georgia Tech’s winning shouldn’t be a surprise by now

Paul Johnson, with Roddy Jones, has led Tech to a 5-0 start in his fourth season. (Johnny Crawford/AJC)

Georgia Tech, led by Paul Johnson and Roddy Jones, is off to a 5-0 start. (Johnny Crawford/AJC)

Georgia Tech is 5-0 and ranked No. 13 in the nation. We can’t really know what that means yet, other than the obvious, as stated so eloquently by coach Paul Johnson: “We’re better than the five teams we’ve played.”

Western Carolina, Middle Tennessee State, Kansas, North Carolina, North Carolina State.

We’re not talking about the right side of the menu. None were ranked in the AP poll at the time Georgia Tech defeated them. None are ranked now. None can even cling to hope in the “others receiving votes” category.

But to focus on any of that is missing the point about what is going on at Tech. This is Johnson’s fourth season. While it’s true most of his first freshman class in 2008 were recruited by Chan Gailey, the vast majority of the players on this team were brought in by Johnson. These are his guys, brought here for his scheme, schooled in his mindset.

If you’re looking for a reason to feel good about Tech’s future, it makes as much sense — if not more — to look at this year’s team than even Johnson’s first two seasons, when the Jackets were 20-7 and won an ACC championship (later to be stripped) with Gailey’s players. The foundation, the structure, the direction — that’s all Johnson.

Johnson is not the projecting type. He’s not going to speculate how good this team is or can be, other than to say: “I told people I thought we’d be better than everybody said we would be. But I didn’t know how much better, and we still have half a year to go. Trying to pick games is like trying to pick in recruiting. Nobody knows until three or four years how good classes are. So we’ll see how we finish this out.”

Tech wasn’t supposed to be very good this year. But now we look at the schedule and conclude it should beat Maryland on Saturday and Virginia next week. That would bring the Jackets to 7-0. Then come the three games that will decide their fate in the ACC and level of bowl game: at Miami (winnable); Clemson and Virginia Tech (both difficult, but at home). Then comes Duke, then Georgia.

Regardless of how the remaining games fall, the win total should exceed what most projected.

Things like this don’t happen by luck, not in a coach’s fourth season. This isn’t a star-laden group. They’re talented, but young. There’s chemistry. They like each other. But most of all, they’re following Johnson. He has a track record at Tech now for players and recruits to see.

“Most of them know what they signed up for when they came in,” he said. “So now it’s not about trying to transition. I’m not trying to talk them into everything when everybody was telling them it won’t work. That’s the biggest thing we fight here: [Perceptions that] it won’t work, you can’t do this, you can’t go to the NFL. Like I said when I got here, once you’re here, everything will take care of itself.

“The other thing about the fourth year is, they know, this is the way it is. It’s no big deal when you have to run at 6 a.m. for not going to class. It’s no big deal when you have to practice in pads twice a week. Nothing’s a surprise.”

Johnson wasn’t in a good mood this week. He didn’t like the way the team played at North Carolina State, he’s bothered by a cold and, well, he can just be a moody guy. When the rankings came out and the Jackets jumped from 21st to 13th, he hardly blinked, and he made certain his players didn’t blink.

“They know every day from the way I coach them that they haven’t arrived,” he said. “I’m on their butt all the time.”

By Year 4, it’s not a surprise. Maybe the winning shouldn’t be, either.

Same thing since PJ has been there. Beat up on mediocre teams, give up a ton of points (25+ to bottom feeders), lose to good ACC competition, lose to UGA, then get absolutely smoked in their bowl game.

Six straight bowl losses and counting.

What are you talking about? Two division titles and a championship (that should be restored) in four years is more than the pups and Saint Richt can claim. Sure, we got smoked by LSU in the Chick-fil-A Bowl, but close losses in the next two bowls (one of which was a BCS game) show improvement in the post season.

Let’s see if thUGA can even make a bowl game this year.

Once again the true test of Tech’s team will be whether they defeat UGA or not. Until they start playing at least other BCS eligeable non-conference teams during the year, it is hard to tell whether they are even decent or not due to the fact that the ACC is so traditionally soft.

Not to bash, but UGA should follow this formula as well. It is the low road to guarantee a great end of season record. Richt’s job wold be VERY secure if UGA played Tech’s patsy laden schedule.

CPJ has turned the culture of Tech football around since the Gailey era. During the Giley era, the Tech fans knew that we would win 7-8 games a year and go to yet another subpar bowl game and every once in a decade possibly play for an ACC championship and lose 6-3 to a Wake Forest. CPJ has raised expectations on the Flats. We now expect to have a chance at the ACC championship game regularly. It’s not a guarantee, but it is possible. We no longer have to fear playing the upper tier teams. We expect to play them hard and well. Nobody knows how many wins this team will have, but with CPJ at the helm, the sky’s the limit. We are now one of the feared teams. People hate to play us and that is a very good thing. People had better take notice and really appreciate the job CPJ is doing. With him around, we can expect a very good product on the field for years to come… G

Tech’s defense has and will worry us sick. A team can contend for a National Championship with this offense. But the defense can cause us to lose to a North Carolina, let alone a game down IN Miami or at home against Clemson or UGA.

I Love my Jackets as much as any of you. But they have got to prove they can stop a real good team; one better than UNC and much better than N.C. State.

I’ll take our coach over yours any day. You know as well as I UGA recruits higher caliber players than we do, yet all of the games between our schools remain relatively close because of coaching. If Saban had your players you’d be undefeated. Johnson is 1-2 against uga, but that will even out this year because your players are not disciplined. They make a tackle and celebrate every time like they have really accomplished something. Duh, that’s what you’re suppose to do. Until Richt DEMANDS respect from his players, I’m afraid you will remain in the middle of the pack.

I thought GT would be better IF the passing game improved. It did. And the scary thing is there is a more room for improvement in the passing department. So much that when this offense is purring the other guys have to pick their choice of how to get shafted – on the ground or in the air.

If we had a passing game – I think the LSU game would have been somewhat different. LSU still had the size and quickness that we could no match.

This offense is just in 3rd gear now. We have 3 more to go.

Western Carolina = Coastal Carolina
MTSU = New Mexico State
Kansas = Ole Miss
NC State = Miss State
Maryland = Kentucky
Duke = Vandy
UNC = USC
Virginia = Tenn
Miami = Auburn
Clemson = Boise
VT = Florida

So yes, we haven’t played many good teams yet. But UGA has no room to talk about SOS because they have the easiest schedule in the “vaunted” SEC, and the SEC East is currently a joke.

We could have easily lost the UNC game, and if the refs had called pass interference on us in the 1st quarter (NC State’s first drive, if memory serves), who knows how the game would have turned out. There’s nothing more exciting than watching a good solid football team run up and down the field, break big plays, and hit the big pass when it’s called for. On top of that the defense is coming around, it seems a little more each week. They get a stop now and then, they get a sack now and then and the whole D seems to fly to the ball. This is a very fun team to watch. Yes, it’s been a very fun half season to be a Yellow Jacket. Here’s to seven more exciting games, and we’ve got a good chance in each of them.

NiquePhotog – every game you have matched up, the team UGA played would win. When NC played Tech, NC was 25, because they had beaten James Madison, Rutgers and Virginia. Tech was 24, because they had beaten Western Carolina, Middle Tennessee, and Kansas. Tech is 13, because they have an additional win over NC State. The next two weeks they play two powerhouses, Maryland and Virginia. Now that is something to brag about. What a joke! Most SEC teams, including UGA, would be undefeated with that schedule. None of the teams Tech has played so far could beat either Ole Miss or Miss State. Most couldn’t beat Coastal Carolina.

That’s not to say we haven’t made HUGE strides from last year (yes, I was even at the Indy Bowl!). This year our guys seem to have passion and a “fire”. But they have a long way to go. For tomorrow’s game, we need to start strong and stay strong and not lose one that we are expected to win. (Please don’t let off the gas like last week.)

I’m a UGA fan but the fact is that Johnson has been a good coach everywhere he’s been. What’s going on at Tech is not surprise. It may be a young team without stars by who want’s to play them? His offense rises and falls on whether or not they put the ball on the ground. When the play pretty much mistake free, they can beat anyone. The beauty of the offense is that they score quickly on poor teams and with time consuming drives on good teams. For a college football offense, it has all the bases covered. Playing mistake free is the key.

There is very little doubt Johnson is a good coach with a different system, but will not win a NC title with it, due to not enough athletes to shut down a great team with their defense. Imagine Tech’s D trying to stop Oklahoma. Paul will win 8-10 games a year in the ACC .If he had a D like Bama or LSU, he would be unbeatable.

Arguing about it is pointless, but the fact is in the first 2 games we said that we wouldn’t know about this team until Kansas. After Kansas we said, ok, next we have to be on par with the mid-level ACC teams. We’re seeing some early success there with UNC and NC State. We’re not out of that part yet. We have to beat Maryland, Virginia and Miami before we get through that mid-level portion of the slate. We STILL will not know anything until we play Clemson and VT. After those two games we’ll know if we can beat Georgia. Basically, going 8-0 wouldn’t mean anything more than we’ve achieved “good-by-ACC-standards” but going 9-0 would tell us we’ve achieved the status of “something special.” Only then will I expect greatness out of this Tech team.

The offense needs to get back on track, and the defense (without Drummond or Attaochu) needs to continue learning to tighten up against stiffer competition.

Omnipotent One, I wouldn’t dare speculate on a late-season out-of-conference game until we’ve beaten some quality opponents in our own conference. UNC might find the rankings again at some point, because that’s a decent football team. My goal is to see Tech do well at the end of the season, and right now I’m optimistic only with a great deal of caution. 5-0 is good. It means we have some firepower in the offense. But that’s really still all we can know for now. 13th in the country? I think that’s a whole lot of good faith put into us by the media. We can only earn it with big margins of victory over our mid-level conference opponents until we get the chance to host Clemson and VT. Style points are our friend against weak competition if respect is what we want.

Also, one or two big time games a year, what the ACC provides, may not be enough to stroke the ego Johnson has and is developing due to his short term success. AP, trust me, Tech fans (and the GTAA) are well aware of how disinterested Atlantans are to watch games against ACC competition not named FSU, Clemson, or VT. There’s just so little passion for the fans (and really no bragging rights to be gained if we win) in playing Wake, BC, Miami, NCSU, UVA, Maryland, etc. The fans want to see us play SEC games, but CPJ wants the schedule to be identical to this season’s. It is what it is. Tech’s only chance at drawing fans is not to rely on big rivalries (we left all of ours in the SEC) but to ourselves be an exciting team to watch (kinda like why people tune in to see Oregon.) We’re doing it so far. Early season indications are that our offense is highlight-reel fuel. The late-season slate against CU, VT, and Georgia will fill the stadium, though. Our fans do like those particular matchups.

bamaguy, GT fans (with some exceptions) try to stay realistic. IF Tech were to win out (notice my big IF there) it would probably not be enough to go to the big dance unless the margins of victory stayed impressive. And that means finding more defensive improvement to accompany offensive consistency. And we’d also have to be extremely well-prepared for Clemson, VT, Georgia, and whomever we’d play for the ACC-CG. And again, all with style points on top. It’s the only way an undefeated ACC team who started outside the rankings would make it past a one-loss LSU, Oklahoma, Texas, Oregon, etc. I trust these coaches to put us in position to win every game, but I don’t trust the young team to get it done. I will be there for all of it, though…

I have no idea how to take articles like this. Is it really a big deal to beat UNC minus a ton of NFL talent, NC St minus possibly the nation’s best QB, Kansas, and two FCS opponents? Johnson is correct. They havent arrived. These arent the games anyone expects Johnson to lose no matter who he lines up with. These teams do not have the defensive discipline to stand up to the option offense…period. Nor do they have the offensive firepower necessary to make up the difference.

As long as the ACC is playing Conference USA level football, Johnson will win more than his share of games and get to a bowl. The question is what happens then? What happens when a team has a month to prepare for his offense? What happens when the ACC decides to wake up and play football again? What happens if UGA’s defense is for real who already slowed Johnson down enough to win when it was average at best? That is where the option typically fails the test.

By the way, since you seem to dwell on the past so much, did you know that the two largest winning margins in the Tech – UGA series are held by Tech? No, I’m sure you didn’t know that, because that is a fact, and mutts like you ignore facts. Size of stadium matters, huh? Then why has USC(east) filled up that stadium in Columbia every game every year like forever, and they have had one good team in the past 25 years? This needs to be reposted frequently to remind dawggies what a grotesque embarrassment they are.

Georgia Tech had the nation’s best average SAT score for football players, 1028 of a possible 1600, and best average high school GPA, 3.39 of a possible 4.0. But because its student body is apparently very smart, Tech’s football players still scored 315 SAT points lower than their classmates.

Many schools routinely used a special admissions process to admit athletes who did not meet the normal entrance requirements. More than half of scholarship athletes at the University of Georgia, the University of Wisconsin, Clemson University, UCLA, Rutgers University, Texas A&M University and Louisiana State University were special admits. . . At Georgia, for instance, 73.5 percent of athletes were special admits compared with 6.6 percent of the student body as a whole.

Why doesn’t the AJC ever ask McGarity or Richt about those “special admits”??

These SEC fans absolutely kill me. You guys always praise your conference. I know all about the championships. There are other good teams out there fellas – i.e. Boise State.

Just remember, conferences cycle every so often. Teams that have been on top (Florida, Tennessee and Auburn for that matter) are not what they used to be. If you use any kind of logic and look at the game for what it is, teams like Tech and Clemson, should be extremely concerning for any team facing them as we reach the midpoint and home stretch of the season. Coach Johnson is the real deal AND he’s getting his recruits into his system. Get better on D and they are tough to beat.

heeldawg

I don’t disagree that CPJ is a good coach–and his system works great for Tech. But Mark Richt is, in your estimation, “on the hot seat,” and I could nevertheless almost guarantee that Georgia would also be 7-0 against Tech’s first seven opponents–and that Tech would be either 5-2 or, at best, 6-1 against Georgia’s first seven opponents (I don’t see them beating Boise under any circumstance). So is the CPJ genius designation truly earned here, or just a function of the soft ACC schedule? If Richt had played the same schedule and gone 7-0 to start the season, would you be proclaiming that the Dawgs were back?

Personally, I think either proclamation is premature.

It’s no surprise that Tech is winning. I’ll agree with that. But it’s no surprise simply because they have played a lineup filled with creampuffs. I’ll rest my judgement until after they have played against Virginia Tech, Clemson and Georgia. Win those games and we can talk. Making this sort of pronouncement now is like George W. Bush’s “mission accomplished” statement of a few years back–just a wee bit early.

So is the CPJ genius designation truly earned here, or just a function of the soft ACC schedule?

Most of the so called experts picked GT to finish in the bottom half of the ACC. We lost 5 of our last 6 games last year. We recruit mostly 2 and 3 star players. We lost our starting QB. Yet we are 5-0, ranked, and putting up monster numbers. If a coach’s team performs at a higher level then most expect then the coach is going to get credit. Sorry but that is how it is.

In reference to @heeldawg. This is what I absolutely HATE about football right now. I’ve got to look at who my team has played and then “wonder” or “guess” what their record would be if they played your opponents. And to add to this goofiness, then we have to say – “well if your team played in my conference you would only be 6-1 or 5-2 or 4-3″. Soooooo stupid and a waste of time.

When Paul Johnson coached the Eagles down in the ‘boro, he just focused on winning football games. When he got to the PLAYOFFS, his Southern teams took care of business there too. When the dust had cleared, Ga. Southern was the last team standing – end of story – undisputed National Champions. I know, I know, this is a whole other argument. My point is that what Tech’s record would be if they played in your conference is irrelevant. Let’s settle it on the field!

Supersize, having been to four Georgia games this year (and having suffered through the ignominy of the past two seasons), here’s my take: Georgia actually is better this season, especially on defense. They are horribly inconsistent on offense, but the team overall is improved. Had it not been for a ridiculous turnover-fest against USCe, Georgia would be 4-1 right now with that one loss to a team that is a legitimate top ten team (and a team which would beat either of our respective squads 9 out of 10 times). That being said, the mental errors have to cease, and the team needs to move the ball consistently on offense to beat a good team. The Georgia team of 2011 is not anywhere near the Georgia teams of the 2002-2005 era, but it is getting there. Like Tech, they are very young, and make many of the mistakes that young teams make. Richt has done a good job of rooting out the thug elementthat should never have been there in the first place–note that Cornelius Washington’s arrest last weekend was the first one this season (as opposed to 14 last year).

That being said, I don’t to take away from what CPJ has done at Tech. This is not smoke and mirrors; Tech is actually better than the sum of its parts, which is more than I can say for my alma mater. If we could combine your team’s offense with Georgia’s defense, that would be a team worthy of challenging Alabama or LSU. Sorry it doesn’t work that way sometimes….

@RipK46: It doesn’t take an engineer to calculate that Georgia would probably sit at 7-0 with Tech’s schedule. My major point is that Tech hasn’t really played anyone good–and won’t until they hit that VT/Clemson/Georgia stretch. If they win those games (and they might), then CPJ’s done a truly great job. I’m merely getting onto Jeff for writing a fluff article which is largely based on exactly what Coach Johnson said is true–Tech’s better than the teams they have played. He’s stating the obvious and calling it insight. This is NOT an indictment of Tech or of CPJ, who has clearly done a good job of getting the most out of his players.

And GT Bob, as I said, CPJ deserves the credit for what he’s done. But there is a double standard at work here. That’s all I’m saying.

The reason why our defense gives up more points is simple and it’s amazing some of you don’t realize it.
The opposing team in many cases gets the ball 3-4 times as many times as they would in a normal game because we score so quickly. When you average 55 points, the opposing team is going to score some. And about 35 points we’ve given up this year were on fluke plays. If you were scoring 55 a game you would be scored on a lot too… Like a drunk ho at johnnys hideaway.

Schultz; “But now we look at the schedule and conclude it should beat Maryland on Saturday and Virginia next week”. There is no risk for you to conclude. CPJ and Tech can’t afford to conclude. The only thing for GT to do is continue to win and get better week by week. Like it or not, this offense gives Tech a chance. It’s an equalizer when you have 2 and 3 stars and the other guy has 4’s an 5’s. Besides that it is dang fun to watch, especially when the passing game is clicking and opening up the run.

I’ve said this to friends and I’ll say it in public – Johnson reminds me of Bear Bryant. He’s got the same gruff demeanor, the same no BS attitude, and the same leadership skill with youngsters. He gets the most out of a TEAM. If they execute that offense, no one can stop them. Just like the Bear.

Fans continue to compare GT with UGA which is ridiculous. UGA has 4 & 5 star athletes and is expected to win against similar or lesser teams. GT has 2 & 3 star athletes and should never beat UGA. But they do.

What always gets me about reporters and stories is the reaction they have off the reaction a coach has when the press is telling him he won’t win. We pay CPJ a lot of money and he takes his responsibity seriously. I don’t find the man cocky like some of the press, I find him not feeling guilty or defensive about want he is doing at Tech for all that money. When a reporter insults him by saying he can’t win he gets upset, hell I get upset. The man has done nothing but win, yet he barely got a press clipping coming here. When there is no support and even resistance it makes his job coaching young men to believe in him twice as hard. He didn’t deserve that treatment, especially when the man in Athens could do no wrong, yet was taking the players he wanted and not producing anything special. Richt was getting a pass because he said all the right things and entertain the press while Johnson was the weird one. The press did Georgia no favors as they are stuck with a big hat no cattle coach, and they did Johnson no favors yet wonder why he is the way he is.

You didn’t understand Johnson when he got here, so don’t screw stuff up now by a slow light turning on that this may be the real thing and Georgia may have the problems. Mad hell yes Johnson stays mad, it would be like telling you that what you writes sucks when I didn’t even read it.

I surely hope this is the year, after the debacle last year. Washington runs the offense differently, running only when that is the best option. This will protect his shoulder from being hit so often it affects his passing. Really, if Washington could hit his open receiver regularly, this would make blow outs a regular thing. I like how the defense is playing, but sometimes they don’t have the strength up front or the speed in the secondary. PJohnson needs to learn what Barry Switzer learned at Oklahoma, flashy offense gets the head lines, but his big fast defenses won championship

GT

Johnson is doing very well and really doesn’t need to learn anything from Barry Switzer. I don’t compare Bear to Johnson, I doubt Bear could do near as well with the talent Johnson is using. Though I bet Johnson could have done just as well if not better with Bear’s.

Absolutely no one on earth is surprised when somebody beats Western Carolina, Middle Tennessee St., Kansas, North Carolina, NC St., and now Maryland.

This is a dumb column, but not nearly as dumb as Mark Bradley’s column the other day where he claimed that Paul Johnson actually LIKES having a crappy defense. Somebody call a surgeon because the AJC needs its lips removed from CPJ’s butt cheeks STAT!!!

Tech was unimpressive. Remember, this is the Maryland team that was destroyed by Temple! We were lucky to win this game. Typical crummy defense. QB’s passing gets worse every week. Penalties and turnovers.. Nothing to be proud of. I guess we won, so that’s good, but I cannot believe that we can beat a good team. We have 4 of them coming up.

TechRon

October 8th, 2011

And, to JClay’s comment above, I say: The reason they do not sell out is that no one really believes this is a real good team. If they beat a decent team and look good in all phases, I will believe. I don’t see that happening. They have looked great on offense in a few games, but this was against low level competition. Plus, in those games, the defense still looked bad. I think Buford could get 20 points on our defense.

No disrespect to Tech or CPJ, but the reason the winning isn’t a surprise is that the schedule is one cream puff after another. Jeff, many years ago you wrote that the Falcons were beating teams that stink… which means they don’t stink.

And Tech doesn’t stink. But are they the 13th best team in the country? They’ve done nothing to substantiate that. I dare say there are at least 13 teams that would be undefeated playing these 6 tomato cans. But they did at least beat them all, which counts for something.

Beat Clemson and the rest and then we’ll talk.

After the last two weeks I’m beginning to feel like Tech could finish 6 wins and 6 loses. That way they might not even get to go bowling with 6 straight loses, which might be a blessing. They would not lose a bowl game again. CPJ has finally reached the point where people make a joke out of the offense he uses unless he is playing teams like Western Carolina.

Congratulations, Yellow Jackets on a great start to your season! Like us, you can only play who is on your schedule and you have to beat them regardless of where they are ranked. I must admit that your showing on offense has been very impressive, and your QB is very impressive. All of these detractors (and it works both ways) that posit these hypothetical “if you played so and so” means nothing, and neither do these comparitive scores! Play hard and I hope you are undefeated when we beat you this year!!

Defense does look to be the soft point, but I see improvement, hopefully it will continue. As always we will be our worst enemy. We need to stay focused and not stub our toes against Va and UM. I expect a great battle against Clemson. Both teams will be “UP” for that one.

GT overated once again. No true competition until Clempson (which could be very ugly with porous and 4th quarter stuggling defense. My guess is 9-2 best case with VT being tough offensively, Clempson likely definite loss, UGA definite loss. No true offensive competition that is fast and multi-dimenson…..Perhaps they will at least fill the stands a couple times….

Gatorman

I may be wrong, but much of the 4th quarter was Washington left, right and up the middle. Was PJohnson afraid that Washington was too rattled to pitch or was the offensive line play that bad? After hitting his receivers in the first four games, he’s having difficulties actually hitting them with a catchable ball. In the next three weeks, he needs to get his game going again or there could be three losses, wiping out a terrific start.

Maryland is a great team….probably should be in top 25…same with Virginia…and MTSu and West Car would probably give a lot of teams in the SEC a run for their money…why can’t everyone just admit that Tech is good…why aren’t we in the top 10? I mean 12 is okay, but we are 6-0 against some pretty good teams…why is Clemson ahead of us? Why Oregon? I feel confident that we could beat LSU or Bama the way we are playing right now.

October 9th, 2011

One more thing…the lack of respect from UGA fans is starting to annoy me…all they ever bring up is our head to head record over the last 10 years…like that means anything…how about this year…we are 6-0, they are 4-2…we’re better…they never want to admit that…head to head matchups and results aren’t even that accurate…just because one team wins, does that mean they are really “better” than the other team…I say a teams record matters more….but not head to head record… just regular season record. Take 2009, yeah we lost to UGA, but we had a better record = we had a better team…head to head shouldn’t even come into play. So suck it dawg fans.

GT has had one of the easiest schedules in the country. They have not played a team in the top 25 and only UNC is arguably in the top 50 of 1A teams.

Barely beating a team that lost 38-7 to Temple is not impressive.
