The Braves will do more scoreboard watching tonight, and hope to have another banner to raise.
Amid all of the angst of the Braves’ collapse (10-18), the injured starters (Jair Jurrjens, Tommy Hanson), the slumping hitters (Martin Prado, Jason Heyward, Brian McCann) and the overused bullpen, guess what? The Braves can actually clinch the wild card tonight.
OK, for that to happen, the Braves need to hit a long-odds parlay: 1) The maligned starter, Derek Lowe, needs a strong outing to defeat the Phillies at Turner Field; 2) The St. Louis Cardinals need to lose for a second straight game in Houston. Those two developments would give the Braves the National League wild card spot for the second straight year, and render Wednesday’s regular-season finale against Philadelphia meaningless.
Few expected the Cards to lose to the Astros Monday night. It happened (5-4 in 10 innings). But the Braves’ postseason chances mostly hinge on Lowe. If he and the Braves win tonight, at worst the magic number is down to one, with Tim Hudson on the mound Wednesday against Joe Blanton (advantage: Braves).
What the Braves need is the Lowe of Sept. 2010, not 2011. Last season, he went 5-0 with a 1.17 ERA (29 strikeouts, three walks) in his final five regular season starts. But this has been the worst season of his career. He’s 9-16 with a 4.92 ERA. He’s 0-4 in his last four starts with an 8.24 ERA (though his last start at Florida was solid).
The other obvious issue for the Braves is a lack of offense. They lost 4-2 on Monday, have scored two or fewer runs in four of their last five games and three or fewer in six of their last 10. They’re also hitting only .239 in the month of September and .181 (32-for-177) with with runners in scoring position this month.
They’ll need to break out of that against the Phillies’ Roy Oswalt, who has been strong in two starts against the Braves this season (1-0, 2.08 in two starts) but in his career is only 1-3 with a 5.15 ERA.
As you prepare to scoreboard watch, your second favorite team, the Astros, will start Henry Sosa (3-5, 4.68) against the Cardinals’ Jake Westbrook (12-9, 4.48).
And with that, I turn it over to you. We wait to see what Lowe gives us.

Can this be an omen? There was a rainbow over Turner Field two hours before the Braves' game.

Derek Lowe was known, and rightly so, as a big game pitcher when at Boston.
Doubters will doubt, but if, if he could pitch a gem tonight, it could start a fire with the team.

Baseball is a game of odds, The odds presently favor the Braves, Two games left to play and Braves have one game lead, Win both games they are in, Win one of the two games and Cards lose one, The Braves are in, Lose both games and Cards win both games the Braves are out, Win one game lose the other and Cards win both games its a tie and one game play off. I think the Braves can split but can Houston win another one from Cards? (odds say no) The odds are in favor of one game play off. The way the Braves have played the odds in play off would probably be in favor of the Cards.

I think “Linus” from Charlie Brown said it best when he said “I’m doomed”!!!! The “I’m” being “the Braves”. It is the “Great Pumplin Charlie Brown” and the Braves are a bunch of “pumpkins”!!!
Lowe pitching is like Chipper Jones trying to run fast. Why is Lowe pitching and why is Chipper even playing tonight. He has had a very good year but he can’t run/move. In fact the ball hit to him last night by Vizciano (sic) would have been stopped by anyone who is “not injured”-yes it was hit hard but he “can’t move”!!!!!! This of course reuslted in a double and another RBI by Ibanez. Not that it really matters it just aggravates me to watch such poor decisions by FG.
Getting back to Lowe. They would be better off grabbing the first person who walks thru the gate to pitch. At least that would be fun to watch and that person might actually have a chance to win the game.

Your photos make me ask, again: what sort of “look” were the architects of this stadium going for? Oriole Park, (the renovated) US Cellular Field, Comerica Park, PNC Park, New Busch Stadium, Minute Maid Park, AT&T Park – I get it; retro, lots of brick and exposed steel/iron. Progressive Field (Indians), Yankee Stadium, Citi Field, new Marlins Park, Chase Field, Petco Park, too, I understand – unique but modern. Turner Field – sorry, I don’t get it. It’s an over-sized (by 10,000 seats I’d say) hodge-podge of nothing distinct, other than it’s centerfield scoreboard on ‘roids (ironic, given that Andruw Jones patrolled CF for so many years in the stadium’s earliest seasons).
People can bellyache about Braves fans’ apathy at the gate, but the ballpark doesn’t help; going isn’t the ‘experience” it is a Fenway or Wrigley (because it’s not old and an homage to the past), nor is it distinct (like PNC and AT&T Parks are with their bridges and bays “keep it simple” outfield advertising). Supply & demand dictates that the stadium’s too big, outside of the occasional sellout weekend series (and even then, you point to the Mets, Cubs, Yankees, Red Sox fan-bases nudging us over the top).
The Braves got a free ballpark back in 1997; when will they (or the stadium board) start realizing their revenue problem has a lot to do with a flawed, sterile ballpark that doesn’t evoke any passion FROM fans of the team that occupies it?

I’m not joking when I say this, but as another blogger has just asked, “Do the Braves have a hitting coach”?
Lowe tonight: Put that in the “L” column; the Cards win tonight and it’s tied.
Tomorrow night, the final night: Poor Braves lose ’cause the Cardinals just want it a bit more and they have guys that can hit in the clutch.
The ignominious record will have been rightly established and will live with this band of players throughout the rest of their lives. Of course, they COULD win, but, are you ready to place bets on that?

Playing ball comes easy for a Clusters. We was never so happy as when we was playing ball. One time, we was at bat and our Mama came driving by and asked us if we wanted to go to the Dairy Queen. We didn’t hesitate. We dug in and concentrated really hard and when the pitcher turned it loose, we turned on it and drove it out to the deepest part of the park. Then, we jumped in the car and before long we was enjoying a delicious Dairy Queen treat. We think it was a Oreo Cookie Blizzard but it may have been a Pecan Mudslide. We can’t remember. We was hoping that somehow, some way, Derek Lowe can keep us in the game long enough for someone to hit a 3-run homer which is the only way this team wins.

We aren’t sure but it looked like Chipper may have pulled something in his fanny last night and we was wondering if all that fanny patting had anything to do with it. RR- if you cannot determine the architecture (brick, modern Georgian) then you have never been.
I love the Ted – GREAT sightlines (closest seats to home plate in NL), LARGE portals and decks (unlike some of the chopped-up versions in other parks, and 52,000 seat capacity – so when it is packed – and check the record it almost always is on non-school nights and in the playoffs – it can be very LOUD. 10,000 seats more than any other MLB park may look bad on some nights, but when it is full the place ROCKS.
I just wish it were located on the site of the old Ponce de Leon Park or in south Buckhead. How the city has not managed to develop the intersection of Capitol/Georgia (Aaron/Abernathy) into a great neighborhood that borders the stadium and Grant Park is beyond me.

Playing the statue of Henry Grady at third base may be a better idea than some think. We would not want to see anybody get hurt worse over there tonight. A bonus of having the HG statue in the lineup is they can ask him for his post game comments rather than uh, Chipper. If a deer could talk . . .

Constanza will not be in the lineup tonight so the Braves must think they can score their run without him. Once they get that run, we’ll see if Lowe can make it stand up. We all know Lowe is outta here but do they need to keep making that point by letting him get a guaranteed loss each outing? Looks like the Braves have bad pitching and bad management. To those who question the capability of the hitting coach, if the entire team had a career year, it would not make the Braves offense one of the weaker run scoring outfits in the league. In fact, under those conditions, the biggest question mark relative to the team’s success, would be whether you get Chipper Jones for 67% or 100% of the season.

Blazerdawg, that’s the EXTERIOR of the park (brick, modern Georgian). I’m speaking of the interior of the stadium, man.
Keep in mind “announced attendance” and actual attendance are two different numbers, too. Trust me, if The Ted only seated 40,000-44,000 or so, the tickets would be more in demand and actually used when purchased.
The sight-lines and concourse are nice (most modern ballparks do have ‘em), but it’s not really necessary to be able to amble around the entire thing, in most places, because they want you to be into the GAME and not Tooner Field or the arcade tucked underneath a section of seats where you can’t see the game or the massive cow and Coke bottle in left field.
I’d have LOVED to have seen the brick exterior brought into the stadium, circling the playing surface, too, honestly. And what’s with the various blues and sometimes green walls behind the outfield wall? The batter’s eye – is there some MLB edict that it HAS to be that shade of green, and not, I don’t know, BLUE (like the rest of the stadium)? It’s out of place.
The outfield wall, speaking of, lacks any uniqueness in it’s dimensions; the advertisements are just full-color ads covering the wall, instead of at least being artistic (logos overlaying the wall’s color, a la PNC Park or Nationals’ Park).
Aesthetically, there is no defining theme or character to this park’s interior. It’s just a piecemeal, hodge-podge of sponsor logos and gimmicks. There’s no attempt, really, at creating a “look” and making advertisements theme into said look.
Hell, anybody advertising on the Green Monster in Fenway had better be happy with nothing more than their logo (in white) and lettering (in white) on the green background.

What a waste of time rooting for this team. Terrible pitching. No hitting. Can’t believe this dude makes $15 million a year. What a joke. This country is ridiculous. Guys as mediocre as this making bank, while almost all of us work blood, sweat and tear, to make ends meet, paycheck to paycheck. And we are cheering for them. Ridiculous.

Lowe’s sinker is looking pretty flat along with his slider. His change-up is about a 5 mph difference from his cutter. He is just old and worn out. Enough said. Lowe is not to blame, this Braves team cannot hit. Plan and simple.

Hey Jeff, I’ve got a question for you. Today on MLB Radio, they talked about the White Sox clubhouse quitting on Ozzie G. So do you think this team has quit on Fredi, or just quit? Or perhaps it’s the whole headlights thing. Most of these batters don’t act like they know WHAT a strike zone is, let alone WHERE it is. Thanks. I’ll take your answer off the air. Never understood what that means, but I hear it all the time on the radio. Go Braves.

When the Braves blow this, will you support the retention of a manager with such an epic failure given this talent, pre season expectations, and robust wild card lead to start this month?
If the Braves keep this goof the stadium will be a ghost town next season as no one will believe in a manager this poor and ineffective.

I want to have faith, but, my gut tells me the Braves arent going to make it. Either they will get swept by Philly, and the Cards will win two, and it will be over tomorrow, or it will go to a one game playoff, that the Braves will lose.
I hope I’m wrong, but I cant think anything positive with the way this team is playing now.

This is a different feeling than all those years with Bobby Cox. Fredi did some good things. He batted Chipper somewhere other than 3rd (Bobby would never do that). Fredi put Constanza in and let Heyward sit and the team ran and scored for a short while. We was wondering if Fredi is really the manager of this team or if he is being told who to play and when and where. If not, then surely he is stupid. Every Atlanta baseball fan knew how another Lowe start would go.

And why would we want them playing in post season anyway? To further embarrass the organization?

The Braves were better when Prado played second. I would put Uggla out in left and move Prado back to second. Uggla would not have to think so much in the field…..and Prado would stay in the game more. Both would probably hit better. Chipper is still a good major league 3B…..and he deserves to play the postion for the Braves for as long as he desires. He would retire before being a backup at any postion. The key next year…..and we should be thinking next year….if for Heyward to go back to extended training and learn a new hitting approach from someone other than Parrish. Pendleton could help him if he would listen to him. He simply needs to focus on becoming an all-field hitter and not try to pull everything. But he is currently unable to cover both sides of the plate….and that is about his approach to hitting the ball….which needs altering big time.

Fredi Gonzalez HAS to be fired for this. This collapse has been so appalling, so devastating and so complete that there’s no away he’ll ever be able to remove the stain of it in the mind of Braves fans. It will be the thing that defines Fredi’s career. At least when we blew the World Series in 1996, Bobby Cox had a World Series title to fall back on. Gonzalez does not have anything close to that kind of capitol built up.
This year will hurt and linger for a long time. You just can’t keep Fredi around if you want to keep fans coming to the gates. I am so distraught over this team that I can’t imagine I’ll be able to build up any enthusiasm for next season. And I imagine a lot of other fans feel the same way. Unless wholesale changes – meaning a turnover of the entire coaching staff as well as significant personnel moves – are made, attendance is going to be even worse in 2012 and fan morale will be at an all-time low.
Maybe it’s not fair, but what we’re seeing is too egregious. Heads have to roll.

Truth you are right on. Fredi has to go. Next year could be like the 70’s and average 5-6 thousand a game. Every team in our division will be better next year. We need wholesale changes. We need two corner outfielders bad and some pitchers that can go 7-8 innings at least one out of every 3 starts.

Someone in the front office must have told Gonzalez to play Heyward and sit the player that brought a spark to the team. They lost that spark when Heyward started to play every day. Also…..Gonzalez had nothing to do with the injuries to Tommy and Jar. He has pitched our three great relievers too much…..they are obviously worn down.

Really folks…is Gonzalez really a major league manager? Does he stand up for his players? I can only remember him getting thrown out once this year. And these guys wouldn’t know a clutch hit from a can of potted meat. And what’s up with Fredi Gonzalez? The guy’s dumber than a sack of hammers. We were sold a bill of goods with Fredi. Bobby Cox handed down to Frank “hitting?” Wren the sacred tablets that gave the hiring of Fredi his gold seal of approval. As if were from the lips of God himself. And Frank saw that it was good and went back to sleep in his desk chair comforted in knowing that the team had all the hitting they needed by adding Michael Bourn. Frank Wren has never won ANYTHING since coming to the Braves, but his standing was well and safe in the Braves front office. Never a hitting coach shall be fired from Atlanta nor a GM be questioned by the local paper. And the good people of Atlanta stayed away from The Ted again and longed for college football Saturdays knowing that next season the Braves will once again put all their eggs into the pitching basket forgetting that a balanced attack wins ballgames and the rest of MLB laugh in jest at how Wren was kidding all along about their vaunted young pitchers. Wren didn’t even know which one to trade for a bat.

The thing that makes this performance (or stink out) even worse is that these guys (Braves) are still getting paid for this BS (at the fan’s expense). This team is already the butt of so many jokes around the league and well deserved. I hope we just continue to stink because nobody wants to see this team in the playoffs especially the die-hard Braves’ fans. Frank Wren needs to just start from scratch. This just didn’t work!

lol this is great (Cards still playing for a 1 game playoff, that i’m sure!). Cards/Braves lose again tonight, Braves send Hudson to the mound tomorrow in a possible clinching game but watch …. they’ll lose simply because they stink / can’t play with determination / they’re stuck in a losing frame of mind.
Cards giving the Braves chances, they’re not taking it. Braves giving Cards chances they’re not taking it UNTIL! the last game of the season where I’m thinking they’ll blow the Astros out, force the playoff and go on to beat the Braves (and eventually make the Phillies regret not helping the Braves get in)

Fredi G. has been a lousy manager, but he’ll be back. Derek Lowe is a washed up, a worthless, bottom-feeder of a pitcher. He should retire, but Frank Wren, gave hime 4 years @ $15 million, so he’ll be back to piss down his leg again next year. The offense is simply pathetic. No clutch hitters on this team. Not one. Not even close. Not even Mr. three Hole Hitter. Prado has been giving away at bats for more than a month. His 15 minutes of fame was last year. He’s a minor league caliber utility player. Nothhing more. McCann has been a huge choke in the last quarter of the season. He’s a below average defensive player as well. His “third, third, third” call cost a run tonight.. He had a passed ball, when it hit him in the glove. What a disappointment. Uggla, in September, hits only when no one is on base. He had a good two months, and was a disaster the rest of the season. Pitchers were hurt, but the offesive guys led the collapse.
When this thing ends tomorrow, and the Braves can wipe the puke off their shoes, and go home. I hope they realize they have been a part of one of the biggest collapses in MLB history. They did it because they are a no chrome bunch of bottom feeders, with no bats or balls.
They make more money than God, so they get the last laugh. In the end through, I hope they realize, in their profession, they will be looked at as failures. It’s what they are. It’s how they responded, when the season was on the line.
They’ll give quotes about “How hard they worked…” and that nobody quit”…”and they hit a rough patch”, and they “just couldn;t get it done.” They won’t say the truth…That they spit it out, puked it up, and choked for over the last month of the season.

Could see this coming all year. Mediocre hitting team, all year long, that relied on very good pitching and pretty good defense. The pitching, or most of it, heads to Dr Andrews office, and the rest of it, other than Hudson, ages right before our eyes (Lowe). So now we’re forced to try to win games with Hudson and the kids, with Lowe being totally, unquestionably and undeniably washed up.
Injuries happen, arms wear out, those are unavoidable. Our approach at the plate has been
puzzling all year. The offseason would be interesting except for Wren is hamstrung by Lowe’s contract and the ownership of Liberty media. I’d like to see what kind of team Frank could put together if he had a competitive budget.

Also, Wren needs to start the off-season by eating Lowe’s and McLouth’s contracts, sending Hayward to Arizona or the Caribbean to work on his swing, put Sherrill out to pasture, limit Venters and Kimbrel to 65 games each, and ease Chipper into no more than 80 to 90 starts and seven innings (just like the Braves did with Aaron back in the 70’s).

When the he’ll is Wren going to get us some big hitters? Not guys who just get up there and swing. We could have had Pence for two young pitchers. What the hell good is this pitching wealth that Wren values so much doing us now?

It is good that the Cardinals are going to come back and win. The Hawks had to sell half price playoff tickets on Sweetjack.com so it would be pretty embarrassing if the Braves had to do it too. Incredibly embarrassing – this team has quit and they still have the wild-card lead – how can they show their faces in town – never seen a team so obviously terrified of success. This team is bringing shame to the city of Atlanta and all the fans that have infested their time, money & support. And they wonder why fans can be lukewarm in their support of the team. Players should at least pretend like they really care.

I don’t want the Cards to put me out of my misery, but at the same time watching this team over the last month has been like being beaten in the face by Mike Tyson in his prime on a daily basis.
Part of me wants to this to just end. The nonchalant attitude by this team is absurd. Players are clearly injured and are still playing. While I admire the guts, don’t you think it’d be better if 168 hitting McCann and half a leg Chipper should be subbed for people who are healthy?
Chip’s been killing it, but he can’t swing the bat when he’s just on one leg.
Mac has been horrid for a couple of months now and is completely out of shape.
This team looks defeated, doesn’t produce and is the most unclutch team I’ve seen down this stretch.
We looked so good a month ago.
I’m ready for next year. I got out of school tonight around 8 and turned on the radio and heard it was 3-0 on the way home and I’m not even bothering to turn on the game because I know we won’t score any runs. This’ll be the first time I don’t even wanna watch the Braves.
I hope the Cards kind of put us out of our misery. I hate to say that. I really do. But the way this team has conducted itself over the last month is unacceptable.
Then again I want us to get back to the post season. I want this team to succeed. But it’s like if this is what we’re gonna see night in and night out then…. Good lord.
Management has sucked, players have sucked, this month has sucked. This whole team needs a complete look over.
I think the future is bright for this team and organization once we get everyone healthy, but right now, things are hopeless.
I predict a one game playoff with STL, and that they beat us 4-0.
Only reason I even see us going that far is that Huddy is pitching tomorrow.
Just gotta hope the Astros can hold on here.
God I can’t even think straight. I wanna vomit watching this team. It really breaks my heart seeing a group of extremely talented players fall apart.

9:41 pm
DEREK LOWE (to the tune of “The Ballad of Curtis Loew”)
Well, I used to wake the mornin’
Before the roster growed
Searchin’ last night’s box scores
For names of those he mowed
Threw ‘em strikes to the corner
Down with the sinker backdoor
Ring ‘em up, and give more money
To a man named Derek Lowe
(short music break)
Old Derek was a rich man
With long, sweaty hair
When he had a fifth of wine
He should have called a cab
He used to own a live fastball
Used to throw it ‘cross the knee
I’d give old Derek mo money
If he’d play like that for me
chorus:
Play me for a fool
Derek Lowe, Derek Lowe
Well, you spent your drinkin’ money
‘Stead of warming up some mo
People now say he’s useless
Them people ain’t no fools
‘Cause Derek Lowe is the worst darn pitcher
To ever make the news
He looked to throw sixty
And his ERA was ten
Batters used to whoop him
But he’d throw the same again
I’d pull my hair, stomp my feet
Try to say, “Next time”
He’d give up a homer or two
Then go out drinkin’ wine
chorus
Yes, sir
(long music break)
On the day of old Derek’s last game
Nobody came to play
Ol’ Chipper said some words
And grounded into a double play
Well, Lowe lived a lifetime
Pitchin’ without no clues
And on the day he lost his 17th
That’s all he had to lose
Please move along
Derek Lowe, Derek Lowe
I wish that you weren’t here so
Our playoff hopes would grow
People say you are useless
Them people ain’t no fools
‘Cause D Lowe you’re the poorest pitcher
Ever paid to lose

There is not one, NOT ONE, person in the organization worth a Tinkers’ Damn. No one from the president to the water boy has any value. The only hope is for some idiot to buy the franchise and fire every one. Gonzales is the worst manager ever. The coaches have not one clue. The players disintegrate as soon as the “coaches” get hold of them. They are pitiful, putrid, and pathetic. As porky pig would say…that’s all folks.

It comes down to the last game of the season. I never should have gotten so confident back in July/August think the Braves were a sure lock for the playoffs. The Braves need to spend some money to get ummp in the line up. I would see the Braves go young fully at the corners. I hate to say it, but I’d put Chipper to the side get someone like Ryan Zimmerman or David Wright to play third. I wish that the NL would embrace the designated hitter so the AL wouldn’t have such a big advantage offensively. I’m tired of the Braves having a “player’s manager.” The need a mean cusp who wouldn’t put up with the failure to manufacture runs or swinging at dumb pitches and striking out.

Buncha freakin’ losers. WTF is wrong with Bourn?? At least Prado finally woke up….. of course it was meaningless as we were down by 7 in the bottom of the 9th. I’ve never seen such a pathetic team of supposedly professional players. Anyone who says losing JJ and Tommy is what caused this is crazy. This team hasn’t hit all freakin year outside of the month that Uggla was going ape$**t and Freeman was thinking about ROY.

I’ve been watching the Brave’s since they came to Atlanta…even before that because the Crackers were a Braves farm team. The performance of the hitters, a few of the pitchers and the coaching staff on this team down the stretch is plainly abysmal. When we get behind as we so often have this past month, the team just seems to quit. Please tell me why this genius manager of ours, Senor Gonzalez, continues to run Lowe back out on the mound when he has fresh young arms sitting in the bullpen. Am I also the only one who knows that C. Martinez is a homer machine and S. Linebrink, worse still. And why did it take them 2/3 of the season to figure out that Proctor’s fast ball had no movement and hence was so easily to hit. Gonzalez overused Venters & Kimbrel, wore them out. Then on a couple of occasions when he needed them out there, he refused to call their number resulting in Atlanta losses. This team gave away at least a half dozen victories since he All Star break with bad managing. Even one lost victory would have made the difference this year. Not sure about the rest of the fans, but I’ve had enough of Gonzalez inane remarks after losses. Larry Parrish might as well be a fan for all the good he’’s done. It is time for a change in the leadership of this team. We have the nucleus of a great winning machine and the future is bright, but we will never realize our potential with Gonzalez at the helm. Just saying…. A very frustrated fan!

Even if Houston helps us tonight, we really need Hudson to win tomorrow. I dont like the idea of a one game playoff in St Louis on Thursday. Either Houston wins tonight, and we need to do it tomorrow, or I think we are going home, either tomorrow, or Thursday.
I dont want to be negative, but how can anyone be positive with the way the Braves have collapsed?

Larry Parrish philosophy of hitting: Swing like a cave man at every pitch thrown. You might get lucky and hit a home run. So what if you strike out over 100 times. I always did and look where I am now: A major league batting coach.

if the braves are dumb enough to pitch derek lowe over and over and over then they really don’t deserve to make playoffs. i feel bad for the young players who have to deal with such bad management. they will forever be scarred by this mess. derek lowe should have been moved into the pen in june (when we really needed help). instead, we left scott proctor blow late inning games and derek lowe blow starts. just bad time to be a fan.
