Georgia shows signs of life (for those still paying attention)

Tavarres King's second touchdown catch made it 35-0 in second quarter, and rout was on.

Tavarres King's second touchdown catch made the score 35-0, and the rout was on. (Brant Sanderlin/AJC)

ATHENS – It’s best to not get lost in the blur of “what-ifs.”

What if the first opponent was 1-AA roadkill and not a ranked team? What if Georgia had a week to work out flaws before playing Boise State? Or an easy game to prep for South Carolina? Then would they be leading the SEC East today? What if Marcus Lattimore had suddenly declared before last week’s game, “On second thought, I’m going to save my legs for equestrian. Away with you, Mr. Spurrier”?

It’s just not worth it.

Georgia dug a deep hole, and it’s going to be a while before anybody will be able to see light again. The hole didn’t get any deeper Saturday. But otherwise, we saw what we already knew: The Bulldogs are physically superior to Coastal Carolina. They rule over all Chanticleers. Say it loud, say it proud. They led 21-0 after roughly 17 seconds and 38-0 one series into the second half, when all starters headed for Barcaloungers.

They won 59-0. If they can do this to Coastal Carolina, imagine what they could do to Liberty, and Presbyterian, and Stony Brook. Big South: You are the gum under the SEC’s shoe.

“All right. We got a victory,” coach Mark Richt said.

It was the first time Richt he could use those words in a postgame news conference in nine and a half months.

Georgia had not won a game since beating Georgia Tech on Nov. 27. Since then, Athens had witnessed various forms of suffering, anguish and humiliation: A lifeless defeat to Central Florida in the Liberty Bowl. A body slam by Boise State in the season opener. A woulda-coulda-shoulda loss to South Carolina.

“This probably won’t turn a lot of people’s heads,” quarterback Aaron Murray admitted.

But a win was needed for some kind of cleansing. Or exorcism. The Dogs just aren’t feeling the love these days, and they know it will take a long series of victories — or at least one in Florida — before they feel it again.

Even one of the team’s cheerleaders could be overheard as the final seconds ticked down, “Yay! We’re 1-2!” the words dripping with sarcasm.

The good? There is a pulse after an 0-2 start. A 59-0 win takes a certain level of effort and pride, even if the marquee reads: Godzilla vs. Bambi. It was the Dogs’ most lopsided victory since a 70-6 win over Northeast Louisiana in 1994. Richt can only hope it’s a greater launching pad than it was for Ray Goff 17 years ago.

But some of the negative vibes around the program also were reaffirmed. There were about 10,000 empty seats in Sanford Stadium at kickoff. Attendance (tickets distributed) was announced as 91,946, which is the first non-sellout (by 800) in the Mark Richt era. Georgia had sold out 64 straight. The last non-sellout came in Jim Donnan’s final game against Georgia Tech in 200.

We can quibble about how close the number was to listed capacity. But bottom line: When the most popular sports property in the state fails to sell out for the first time in 11 years, it’s significant.

So it was a little surprising when Richt said, “I don’t think it’s a big deal. It was just about taking care of business.”

For players, that last part is true. But externally, confidence will build again only if Georgia can string together wins over the next four weeks: at Mississippi, Mississippi State, at Tennessee and Vanderbilt. It would create some momentum going into the Florida game.

“Our goal is to go 10-0, and that started today,” Murray said.

“I’m sure most people just view this as as somebody we should have beaten,” cornerback Brandon Boykin said. “But a game like this, just getting the shutout, gives us confidence.”

OK: What if? What if Georgia had played Coastal Carolina first?

“I wouldn’t have wanted that,” Boykin said. “I wanted to play a tough team at the beginning of the year. That game showed us what we needed to do to get ready for South Carolina. We played better last week because we had a rough time with Boise.”

In other words, this is your team. The schedule wasn’t going to change that. Now it’s about making the headache go away. We’ll know more over the next few weeks.

Jeff:

Enjoyed your Live-Blog this afternoon.

And yes, it WAS nice to be reminded of what a win feels like!

Today was a good confidence-builder for UGA and gave our reserves some much-needed playing time.

Good job, Georgia; players and coaches.

If Pres. Adams and AD McGarity either one were President of the US back in 1941, they’d still be evaluating today whether we should retaliate for Pearl Harbor or not.

Thanks to their ostrich style of management, we missed the window of opportunity to get Muschamp as the next UGA HC. Anybody notice what a job his team is doing in his FIRST YEAR?

But no, we’d rather live in the state of denial, with McGarity as the governor, and continue to waste time waiting on hope and feel good to actually change things. News flash – HOPE has proven not to work for the Washington DC wingnuts, and it won’t work for the Red & Black either.

Sorry, but I don’t feel better because I just beat down a middle school. I expect a better class of football program from the State’s flagship university. Guess Adams does not agree.

What you apparent Richt-family members fail to understand with your, “We love you, CMR, no matter how lousy a job you do” mentality is that you are helping perpetuate our problems.

We bashers are not haters. Just the opposite, we are fans who happen to care enough TO OBJECT (!!!) when we see the program being systematically destroyed over the last several years.

Do we expect a perfect season every year? Of course not, we’re rational people. But when those running the program continue to act, talk, and walk like there is absolutely nothing wrong with the way we presently are, and that the biggest thing we have to worry about is whether or not we win the ESPN fashion show review, then it becomes obvious to anyone with enough intellect to tie their own shoes that this program is under the control of people who either don’t see it, or don’t care, and either is unforgivable.

If your child is seriously ill, do you just sit there and watch them deteriorate? If the Dr. says “I don’t see anything that needs to be worked on” while the child’s vital signs are plummeting, wouldn’t you take that as a hint that maybe your Dr. is incompetent?

How more clearer do we have to draw the picture to get your attention? Would it help if we drew it in crayon?

Ol’ Miss will be the last sure win we have this season. TN, FL, AU, Vandy, GT – losses all. NMS – I honestly have fears. If you think we can win the SEC East this year, you probably think Rosie O’Donnell is a super model also. And even if the rest of East teams just forfeited their seasons from here on out and we won on a last steam standing basis, any Western SEC team we faced in Atlanta would be as embarrassing as the Boise State game was.

You think we can take AU, AL, AR, LSU? Quit lying to yourself, you’re wasting your own life.

For all you so called UGA fans that want change, get a clue. You all were on here thinking a very good freshman class was going to step on the field and turn a 6-7 team into a SEC champion? Clueless. You really think another coach is going to be able to come in here and get better athletes then what Adam’s and his special admissions committee is going to let in here? Clueless. Adams is not going to let UGA go out and buy a team like Auburn did last year. They can not get the same athletes admitted like LSU and Alabama because Adams will not let them in school.

I bet you all are the same ones that went out 3 years ago and voted for “hope and change”? How is that working out for you right now. Like I said some of you are clueless and really need to stay in a book more and off the Internet running you mouths about things you have no understanding.

I have been a UGA fan probably longer then you have been alive. A great many of those NFL players are on the defensive side of the ball before 2006 (I think UGA did pretty well then) and a lot of those athletes could not get into UGA now. Go back and check out what has happened to our prep school kids since Adams and his special committee? How many players have we had to turn away? How many did we not even recruit and they went to SC, Auburn or Alabama?

You are the one that needs to get a clue and if you do not like what is going on then my friend then go and find another team to cheer for and stay off the blogs because you tend to make yourself look foolish.

@ Rotten in Denmark and Michael

Your brash verbal behavior openly reflects your insecure personalities and an apparent childhood whose parents most likely made the mistake of always giving you everything you wanted without teaching you that success in life is a culmination of setting goals, hard work and responding instead of reacting to adversity. Life isn’t easy. You can thank God above that those around you on a daily basis haven’t written you off when you failed to live up to their expectations of you. Then again, maybe they have & the rest of us are having to put up with your whining and temper tantrums.

Those of us whom have learned from our mistakes and failures will patiently wait on your personal development, although that won’t prevent us from admonishing you to make better choices when you choose to reveal your thoughts. It’s hard to imagine any mature person desiring that something devastating would happen to another decent person or to an institution. Sure, sometimes it’s necessary to replace personnel in any organization, but only the hateful, mean spirited or immature person openly express harm to another person.

1eye, you couldn’t be more wrong. Just like Obuma, Coach Complacency doesn’t have the qualifications for the job he has.

Your kind is the Hope & Change crowd, as it let’s do nothing, and just sit around hoping change will happen with no effort and no action.

Review the following and tell me where I have one fact wrong:

Coach Complacency: “Bobo, you’re doing a great job” – 2010
Mediocre Mark: “Play calling is overrated” – 2011
Dismal Failure’s first comments after the Boise debacle: “Tee hee hee” 2 weeks ago
Unfit for his office: “Yeah, I’m not sure why we called that play” – 2010

Lack of action: A team of thugs with combined rap sheet that make any mafioso proud – 2010, and no action until the heat got so hot he was forced to respond.

Lack of action: A DC on national television caught taunting and giving the choke sign to a opposing kicker. Still no action and no comment.

All of this is OK with you?

He either can’t see — or doesn’t care — that the wheels have come off. Do you see any evidence of an effort to improve?

I refuse to apologize for demanding accountability and some semblance of work ethic. This clown hasn’t earned his pay in over 3 years.

Official attendance was 91,946, below the capacity of 92,746. There were at least several thousand empty seats (fans who bought tickets, but did not bother to come – - most bad teams suffer that fate at the end of the season, not the third game)

td, you are hopeless.

It’s nothing personal with Richt. It’s strickly business.

If he were in ANY other profession or at ANY other SEC school making $3M, he would have been fired for poor performance.

If he hand picked and assembled a totally incompetent staff over a ten year period

If he said that he was the CEO, not the coach, that’s unacceptable.

If he sat on the sidelines with no passion year after year, that’s inexcusable.

If his team had the most penalties, most arrests, flaunted the rules and choked every time they tried a uniform gimmick, anyone else would be gone by now.

He uses his faith much like the Taliban or Al Qaeda. It’s really just a mafia wrapped in religious cloaks. Religion has nothing to do with his coaching. That’s his private business, or should be. He has chosen to flaunt it to detract from his abysmal record.

It’s unfortunate that a good univeristy such as UGA evidently has so many ignorant graduates who are so slow to see through this Marjoe-level scam at over three million a year. US News and World Report will probably lower UGA’s rating when they put 2+2 together.

I demand that my university stand for excellence, honor, winning, championships.

I am glad that Grantham gave the opposing kicker the choke sign. I’m really peeved that Richt muzzled him so that now he is just another Buddha on the sidlines. Bobo isn’t even on the sideline–he’s up at the club level with binoculars.

Snoop. I agree with you 100%. Murray runs up his stats against the teams he can, and just can’t get out of his own way against teams that are good. Richt and Bobo are inept and continue to be out-coached more times than not. This guy you are sparring with, td is either about 15 with a bad case of acne, or he’s mentally disturbed. I guess anyone who isn’t rah, rah UGA no matter what dreck we see on the filed is a troll, a fair weather fan, or humorously, an Obama supporter. McGarity is right. The evaluation of the coaching staff is one game at a time. The criticism of Richt and UGA on this blog is nothing more than venting but UGA did what they were supposed to do today. As for the attendance, it was off a few thousand, not exactly abandoning a sinking ship when 90,000 show up. If the majority of UGA fans had given up on Richt and this team, I doubt 90,000 would show up to watch Coastal Carolina. Fortunately, the group on this blog tonight is not representative of most UGA fans.

So funny to see comments from guys like td. Your insecurity with yourself is so painfully obvious in your posts and responses, that I just can’t help but laugh and shake my head. Your supposition that people who knock UGA are fair weather fans is way off base. You further go on to assume that anyone who doesn’t support Richt and UGA is an Obama supporter? That in and of itself is comical (and way off base,) but let me remind you this is a sports blog, not a place for you to shoe horn your misguided ideologies to folks who just want to vent on the Dawgs, or talk a little football. I’ve been a fan of UGA since ‘71, and I think I’ve seen plenty. While I don’t agree with everything Snoop Dawg says, most of it is spot on. Mark Richt and Company will never fix this program. They’ve had plenty of time to do it and it’s time for a change. That’s my opinion and I think I’m entitled to it since people like me pay Mark Richt’s bloated salary. Now fire away td, I’d expect nothing less.

Running back Jordan Hall and defensive backs Travis Howard and Corey Brown received impermissible benefits at a charity event they attended earlier in the year and were suspended for NCAA violations. Six other Buckeyes were already suspended for NCAA violations- including running back Dan Herron, wide receiver DeVier Posey, offensive tackle Mike Adams and defensive end Solomon Thomas, who all will miss five games as part of their involvement in an investigation that led to the departures of quarterback Terrelle Pryor and Jim Tressel, who is now replaced by Luke Fickell. Terrelle Pryor stand-in at QB Joe Bauserman connected on just 2-of-14 passes for 13 yards in defeat as Ohio State was 4 of 17 passing for -0- TD only 35 yards in the air, and threw an interception in a 6-24 blow-out loss to Miami of Florida, who just had lost giving up 32 points in a loss to lowly Maryland. Neither Maryland nor Miami of Florida, obviously are ranked. Neither is Ohio State, now. Bwaahhh Ohio State.

Do you think Thurmond, Davis or Blue would pass the mustard of this special committee and be on UGA now? I do not think so, just look at a few that the committee did not let on that went on to have good careers in the SEC. Why are we not recruiting the Davis and Blue types any longer. Do you really think CWM said these do not fit into my system so I am not going to recruit them? Do you not think CTG would love to have some some mean nasty attitude players on the D right now?

Just go back and look at what happened. Adams instituted his special committee and CBV left the next year and we have not had the type of D since. You can grip all you want about the O but the PPG have increased since Bobo took over the play calling. The D does not play with the nastiness any longer and that has to do with the type of players on the field. Auburn had them last year, Alabama the year before and LSU before that. This is the difference and you can not see it.

If Tech would have put these stats up against a Boise State or USC, then your point would be solid. SEC Fact Finder

September 18th, 2011
12:32 am

This has been an interesting day in the SEC. UGA gets their first win, UF beats Tennessee but looked very average in a couple of aspects of the game, but they slowed down a pretty good Vols offense.
Auburn showed what playing 42 underclassmen look like on the road. USC out to outlast a Navy team that took it to USC. But we got to see the leading Heisman Candidate in Lattimore, whoa what a hoss.
Going in to the season many thought that Vandy would once again be the worst team in the conference, well folks we all now know that Ole Miss and Kentucky may be the two worst teams as it sits third week into the season. Alabama and Arkansas got a tune up for next weeks big matchup. LSU flexed its defensive muscle against a Dan Mullen team that looked to quit with 5 minutes to go. We saw future SEC member Texas A&M stretch out and win a laugher.

All in ALL, UGA is not as bad as some folks have made out, UF is still a little puzzeling, Alabama IS good on defense, but their offense has a ton of questions, Arkansas can play offense with anyone, but their defense is still an Arkansas defense.

Congratulations to UGA, you guys had 2 weeks of literature beat downs and for a week you guys can drive around with your UGA gear on your cars and be proud, and the way it looks you will be able to keep it on for a few more weeks with Ole Miss on the horizon.

It’s not a “woulda-coulda-shoulda” when your defense doesn’t give up 28 of the points scored in the football game. That’s a what a crappy performance by especially your offense in giving up 21 of those 28 points. You don’t watch your defense not give up 28 of the points scored in a football game, and say it is a “woulda-coulda-shoulda” but instead call that game the body slam game.

As for Boise State, your comment should clearly be about coaching. Then, we have this game which we could have done anything we wanted to do against this cupcake (like all the remaining games), and the offense goes out there like a well-oiled machine, lines up at the line of scrimmage and runs the plays. What was that all about ? You guys come in here and don’t discuss what happened.

Here we go! Yakkita, yakkita, yakkita, yakkety yak. If you could be national champs by talking your way there, Georgia and the Puppie Nation would be defending two or three national titles in a row. I haven’t seen Boykin’s tweet yet calling out Miles/LSU in the championship game, but it’s probably just a matter of time. How about some perspective? The Puppies just tromped the Little Sisters of the Poor. Contrary to popular belief, such a cake walk is NOT a “confidence builder.” It is an ass-kicking of an far outclassed team, which actually does have “student-athletes” playing for it — no match for an NFL minor league team. So please pay attention you apologists for the myth of the studen athlete in big time college football. It is akin to the New York Yankees beating the snot out of this year’s Little League champs. So please, just shut up. Shut up. Shut up. Shut up. Just shut he hell up. Or this program will never change for the better as long as it is in the SEC. You have miles and miles and miles to go. And all the Puppie nation trash talk about SC mid game? Are you people delusional? Don’t answer that. SC beat one hell of a better team than Coastal Carolina. Just get down to business and get ready for Ol’ Miss. Just beating the Puppies could make their whole season as success. Underd ogs in the SEC live for games like this. Just shut up for a change and start getting ready now. Beating the Rebs won’t be a day at the beach.

1st 10 years of coaching career.

Richt= 96-34
Bear Bryant= 67-34-7
Joe Paterno= 94-18
Bobby Bowden= First 10 at FL ST= 83-32-2

Worst 3 consecutive yr record

Richt= 24-15
Bowden= 22-17
Bryant= 20-13-1
Paterno= 16-20

In case my point is not clear. Get off the man’s back. In addition to being a good man, and running a clean program, he is a VERY GOOD coach.

Good win Dawgs!

But what does it really mean? Does it mean we are a contender in the SEC? Probably not. Does it mean we can contend with second tier divison one teams? Probably. Is this where the Dawg Nation wants to be? Probably not. Should we expect more out of the Georgia football program? Yes. Why? 1- one of the top football facilities in the country, 2- great booster and fan contributions and support, 3- great recruiting classes …. just to name a few. The facts speak for themselves, we are trending down, we are not feared in the SEC, we are known as a team which cant finish. LOOK AT THE FACTS…… they cant be disputed….
1-GEORGIA is a combined 0-5 against Top 25 teams in 2010 and 2011
2- GEORGIA has lost 10 of its last 12 against ranked teams. (2-10 record)
3- GEORGIA is now 15-14 in his last 29 games
4-GEORGIA is 6-10 in the past 16 SEC games.
5- GEORGIA is 3-5 in their last 8 games going back to last season
6- GEORGIA has won 1 of it last 4. (and it wasnt a powerhouse we beat today)

One more thing genius. Your post at 2:50 which states, “You’ll notice ny posts are free of spelling errors and consist of complete sentences.” Please note the following:

1. The “No.” that is your second sentence is indeed not a complete sentence. A single word is not considered a sentence.

2. In your fourth sentence, the punctuation goes inside the quotation marks.

3. You misspelled “my.” That is a hard one, though.

September 18th, 2011

I’m a UGA grad and I love the DAWGS, not the coach. He doesn’t deserve my love. He deserted me, not the other way around.

Someone posted a very interesting set of statistics showing how Bowden, Paterno, etc. did in their first ten years. Their results were not very good.

Richt did great in his first five and has been on the slides ever since. And all those coaches won NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS. Richt has even got us to the finals but Adams, McGarity, et al. want to keep this guy at the helm.

Another statistic is more revealing. In the latest stats on Rivals.com, we are 21st in the nation in recruiting. More ominously, Florida is 4th, Alabama 5th, LSU is 8th, Auburn is 10th, South Carolina is 12th, Tennessee 16th and then us at 21. We’re in the third tier!!!! Not good.

When recruiting is going great there is cause for optimism because by some indicia the rankings are the rankings and everything else being equal, we should do well in future years when we’re in the first tier.

So to be 21st, third tier, is a warning that we’re not doing something right (not winning is an obvious something).

I’ve told all who will listen that recruiting is an indicator of what high school coaches think of our program. They guide their athletes to programs that they think are going to win in determining where that kid will go to college.

Obviously, they don’t think very well of us, or not like they used to. At least that’s my take on it.

I read these comments too often because it saddens me that there are so many delusional people who support Richt for the wrong reasons: he’s a fine man and a good Christian. Nothing wrong with those traits, by the way, but in the market place, his first attribute should be that he’s a damn good coach. He isn’t.

Consistently winning makes a good coach. We don’t know what that is because we haven’t been consistent winners going on six years now. On the contrary, we play like a third tier team.

If you got an OC whose background is Jacksonville State, why would you expect him to be a good coach without intense seasoning? And a S&C coach who is the video co-ordinator? Oh, he was S&C some 15 years ago.

Answer this question: would Saban or Meyer have those two on their staff. My bet is they would laugh and say “you got to be kidding.” We’re trying to win on the cheap and have a head coach who wants all to beholden to him in his running the same offense year-after-year because he wants to do the same thing over and over again.

Off with his head!

Over and out.

Frankly, I’m amazed that anyone would believe that God, Jesus, whoever would favor us over others. Afterall, if we are all God’s children, then we’re all alike, like it or not. So, please, cut the crap about praying to Jesus for the DAWGS and asserting that He loves Georgia better than South Carolina. Astounding.

Some of you may be right that Richt will be UGA’s coach for many years. I doubt that but we will see. I’ve tried to figure what happened that has caused us to be in such ill repair. My son laughed and said “dad, we’re on the downs because CMR is not a good coach.” Saban, Miles, Meyer and Chizik(?) weren’t coaching in the SEC then. Therein lies the difference.

I wish Richt no ill, I just wish he were gone. He has worn me out to where I have lost interest, no, my passion for Georgia football. I long for that passion to return. The BullDAWG nation, so-called, is badly split.

More than 4 games a season losses, is not great sir. Not close. And, this is not over 3 seasons, but over now 6 seasons. The only remaining opponent he has who is ranked this morning is # 16 Florida. Are you going to make excuses for him and his staff losing that game, again ?

I believe quite honestly, that yes, sir, this is exactly where the RICHT-0-FILES want to be. Able to beat some of the second tier division one teams, but not all of them; able to beat none of the top tier division one teams. If they wanted to be anywhere else, say actually in 11 seasons having been considered that season ourselves a top tier division one team who beat a top tier division one team – any of the 11 seasons to-date, then we would have done that – only Mark Richt never has done that.

Yet, according to the Richt Apologists, Mark Richt is the greatest coach in the history of football.

(1) He understands NOTHING about motivation
(2) He never has shown the 1st clue about hiring an assistant coach
(3) He never has shown the 1st clue about firing an assistant coach, either
(4) He cannot beat his 1 rival
(5) He is content with all this
(6) Not 1 year when he is supposed to have had great year, did he beat any team finishing in the AP Poll Top 10.
(7) He has never understood discipline
(8) Beating Coastal Carolina by 59 to nothing means NOTHING

Georgia played good, not great. We made some mistakes that still need cleaning up. Schultz’s “WHAT IF” column could really be turned around in many ways. What if Tech had actually played a real football team in their first three games? What if Florida had in It’s first two? What if SC had lost at home to NAVY? What if Lattimore had only run for 195 yards last night? What if, what if, what if.

Honestly, who gives a damn about “what if”? We should only care about WHAT IS. Richt and Company have a chance to put a nice little run together here. On the road in Oxford, doesn’t look as daunting at the moment, but for a program with youth and struggles, any SEC road contest is a test.

The Coastal Carolina win in its own right is a building block. How you may ask? Any team that is trying to get back to prominence starts by beating the teams they should beat and doing it well. Georgia many times in the past had struggled to just drop the hammer. They did it Saturday and began on another building block, which was developing depth. Many kids that played yesterday were playing high school ball just 1 year ago.

Don’t blow the win out of proportion. But, don’t diminish the importance for a team trying to find Itself. Georgia could have won the game or lost the game. They chose to win. If you’re a complaining fan about that, then you don’t need to be a fan.

bBuckeye and ohio state,

At least if UGA were to lose to Vanderbilt, which isn’t likely, they would not have lost out of conference to an ACC team. I am sure you showed your disdain to Miamai this week, or in the osu blog, if they have one. At least Vanderbilt is in the SEC. Does it really make you clowns feel proud that you can get onto a blog about UGA, and spout garbage after your team was shown for what it really is? You have an anemic offense, at best, and your conference is not yours to win this year. You might even lose about 3 more games, with the new members and Michigan whipping your butts. If you want sympathy or an audience for your worthless rants about UGA, try your own teams blog, as I am sure they will supply you with an audience. I don’t care if you are from Georgia or not, you will get no sympathy here from UGA fans. Only the other rat turds from other schools that come onto these blogs to insult another team. You were lucky to beat Akron, so you would be best served by keeping quiet and hoping somehow, your team starts playing.

As you can now see, there are plenty of both negative people and UGA fans that must care about the UGA and how they do. It is a shame you can’t write a more meaningful article, but it appears you can’t. Ban me if you wish, because quite frankly, your articles aren’t worth reading, only responding to. Maybe you can just write articles for an AJC Blog, called, “I hate UGA and like irritating their fans with worthless articles designed to disparge UGA and gather negative comments”.

well, good folks. last time i checked there were about 120 teams in the running for the ‘mythical national championship.’ and it is mythical. now, we dawg fans bitch, carp, and moan about wins, apparently, as well as losses. wonder if even fans of the winner of the mnc bitch, carp, and moan. i’ll bet some of them do. margin of victory not big enough? too many mistakes? play calling could have been better? why did we kick a field goal rather than throw for the end zone on 4th down? and on and on and on and on. all spoiled brats; yes, even, and maybe especially, dawg fans, like i am. we have a team and coach which have averaged almost 10 wins a season over the last ten years; and still we moan. and complain. not to mention that 9 of those wins have been over gt. what do any of us want? the mnc? well, about 119 fine schools will just have to wait ’til next year, too, as they say. there are many, many ways to calculate winning.

Tech rules this State,

Surely you are joking right? Less than 2000 empty seats which means there were still 40K more than saw you beat up on Kansas. When UGA plays you in your stadium, there will still be half as many fans at full capacity as will be at almost any UGA game at home. Get used to it, my friend, the only place you might rule is Atlanta. UGA is still the flag ship university and rules the state of Georgia. Until you can beat them consistently on the scoreboard, (and that is what counts, the score), you will always be a second fiddle in this state. Try harder next time with your painfully stupid and your completely fabricated status of your institute.

If Fl. had of played Boise and Carolina the first 2 weeks they would be 1-2 now also. All the lovefest for Fl. is a joke. They beat a .500 team Tenn.by 10 points, which was the line. Tenn, is 3 or 4 years away, with a marginal coach, and Fl. had the benefit of ironing out all of their flaws against 2 junior high teams. If UGA had the same schedule Florida had, it would be 3-0 now also. Fl. will get their asses handed to them when they play Bama in the swamp, and LSU, and S.C. on the road. Florida has one playmaker on offense,a 175 lb. speedster, and their Q.B. is in the same category as Murray, he has beaten Tenn. So what? Neither Q/B. has ever won a big game by bringing his team from behind in the 4th qtr. So, why all the love for an average Fl. team that beat a below average Tenn. team by 10 points. There isn’t a dominant team in the East, and UGA has as good a chance as Fl.or S.C. to win the east. As i said earlier, Fl, will lose possibly 3 SEC games, and S.C. has only one of the top 3 teams from the West to play,So, i still think it is S.C’s eastern title to lose. They will beat Fl. in Columbia, just like they dominated them last year in the swamp. So, the only hope for UGA fans is for someone other than an SECW team to beat them. Don’t see that happening. UGA blew their biggest chance by gift wrapping a game to S.C. What if they didn’t do that? If a frog had wings he wouldn’t bump his ass. What if Richt and bobo were gone? That is a better question.

Red & Black Dawg – I just think its funny that UGA fans give Tech hell for not filling up their stadium, but when you don’t fill up yours – its strangely quiet. Tech will never have the fan base that Georgia does, but that does not stop the Yellow Jackets from fielding competetive teams and being a worthy opponent to UGa every year. Do we win every year – no. But the way UGa looks down their noses at Tech is ridiculous, but probably won’t stop until we do win about 6 or 7 in a row. I think Florida now considers Auburn or Tennessee a bigger rival than Georgia cause you cannot seem to beat them ever. And then when you do…..you do something really stupid like dance in their end zone…..they will never forget that classless show of nonsportsmanship and they will be putting a beat down on you every year for the forseeable future until Mark Richt is gone and maybe you attract a better coach

There’s alotta detractors because the Dogs are not a very good team in a conference that requires goodness or even greatness to win. All the same reasons that have been noted for sometime.

South Carolina was not bad yesterday, they just faced a very underrated team that plays togh for 4 quarters. Do you expect anything less from academy players? Keep Navy off your schedule, Army too while you are at it. They are not SEC teams, but they are much improved over the past decade.

I love the way some UGA fans refer to the truth as “negative comments” and “UGA bashing.” We have all endured down times, no team is always on top. What amazes me, from the outside looking in, is that the men in charge seem to have accepted mediocrity. Any other top tier SEC school would have fired Richt at the end of last season, and you have Vince Dooley defending him. But if this is what you want . . . . . .

Alabama fired a good coach for a better one, Auburn fired a good coach for a better, Mississippi State fired a good coach for a better one, Tennessee fired a good coach for a better one (ok, one that bolted after one season, but at least they tried).

The problem was statistics, is you can always manipulate them. Based on statistical logic that some posters are using on CMR, should be applied to VD’s record from 1977-79, which was 20-13-1. 1977 he was 5-6, bounced back 9-2-1 the following year, then 6-5 in 1979. During that 3 year run, we went to only the Blue Bonnet Bowl, thats it. Of course the rest is history, as VD recruited Herschel who came to Georgia on a coin flip over Clemson. VD went 12-0, 10-2, and 11-1 the next 3 years. What if we would have fired Dooley in 1979? No national championship or championships run during the 80’s. You can manipulate the statistics and records anyway you want to make someone look good or bad. Come on, CMR is a great coach, and a great recruiter. Lets see what he can do with the Dream Team. Don’t be fair weather fan.

It would be nice if everyone could let up on the animosity. Just admit the fact that UGA is having a rough season start but can turn it around and Tech has an offense that is working. (See Navy against SC) It’s not a “high school offense” it’s CPJ’s offense and it has proven itself over the years. Whatever happens during the year, the bragging rights depend on the game in November each year, so quit obsessing on the other teams and support yours.

3. During that period, UGA did not win the SEC championship.

4. During that period, UGA did not even win its SEC division.

Week Three:

Congratulations on posting a W Georgia.

Congratulations to GIT for going 3-0 to start this season.

Vandy looks impressive after injecting new life and energy into their football program with a coaching staff change.

Houston Nutt is a dead man walking. He didn’t realize the recruiting advantage that he had at Arky. Maybe he should do some mission work if he wants to save his job.

MSU looked impressive against Memphis. If only all of their games could be against Memphis. They played their best game of the season this week and came up short. Dan Mullen might be a great HC. MSU will likely never be a great football school.

Auburn’s luck was bound to run out eventually. Too many critical members of last year’s dream team played their last CFB game in Phoenix. Lots of young talent on this team, and they play with heart and adrenaline. They will continue to improve, but will probably drop a few more games in the process.

Congratulations to Dabo Swinney for posting his first signature win at Clemson. His seat just got a little cooler.

Florida appears to be back on track, but who knows the true value of a win over the Vols at this stage of the rebuilding process?

South Carolina retains their position as the defending SEC East Champs. When will their inevitable mid-season collapse occur? Enquiring minds want to know.

OSU falters in the IneligiBowl. How the mighty have fallen…
BTW: Is “Buckeye” the same poster who said that he would not show his face here again if the Magnificent Five didn’t honor their contract with Coach Tressel to come back and play this year?

Notre Dame wins a meaningful game! Is anyone on this blog old enough to remember when Notre Dame was relevant in CFB?

Is FSU really on their way back to their winning ways, or is Oklahoma somewhat over-rated? Time will tell.

Oregon looks invincible once again. Helps when the Ducks don’t have to compete with top-tier SEC teams. Good thing they’re in the Pacific Time Zone because they aren’t ready for Prime Time.

The Longhorn football program appears to be on the mend. Too bad they destroyed their conference.

Next week should be interesting. Stay thirsty, my friends!

JEFF SCHULTZ YOU ARE SUCH A BIG JERK TO WRITE THIS!!!! I am VERY proud to be a Dawg Fan and Darn PROUD of their efforts against Boise State and South Carolina – coached by the “Evil One”!!! We went up against a #5 ranked team when we were ranked #19, Boise State had a previous year Heisman QuarterBack Candidate plus several returning experienced players to their advantage and yet we rallied from a 3 touchdown difference to lose by only 2 at the end, I repeat a #5 team, not some no name team like every one else in the SEC who were playing as their opener, exception LSU!!!!!! As far as South Carolina, yes we should have beat them, but due to 2 or 3 mistakes we lost to them otherwise we would have won! Again, I repeat they were ranked and we were not!!! Still some other teams in the SEC were still playing easy wins at this point like FLORIDA!!!! IF you are really a DAWG Fan I challenge you to support them! Because that is what a true Fan does it is the definition of it, no matter if the chips are down-You support the Coach, the Team and the Program!!! Coach Richt is a great recruiter and coach? I can give you a personal statement about this comment. As an ass’t football coach I personally watched the head coach bench a quarter back because he was hitting on the opposing cheerleaders after we lost a tought, close game. He could have cared less as he already had a scholarship to UGA. His attitude from 6th grade thru high school was all about him. He never displayed any team ideals and so he sat out the last 8 games of his high school career. I personally contacted his recruiter and informed him and the attitude was that they did not care and they could fix him. He has been there 4 years and it appears that his attitude has either rubbed off on others or allows him to fit right in at UGA. Character traits are of no concern to UGA and it is now coming back to haunt them. How does this make the head coach so great? This group lacks character and from the many comments on here it appears that many others also see this. Nothing will improve until UGA fields a team and stops putting 11 individuals out there.

Yes, a very bad joke. And an embarrassment to everyone in the State of Georgia with their illiterate, low class players, not to mention their multimillionaire phony saint of a coach.

Bonnie Blue Skies, Richt does have a thing for the bad boys, doesn’t he? Sort of reminds me of some of the girls I went to high school with.

Richt has become the anti-Bear Bryant: he can take his and lose to yours, and he can take yours and lose to his.

I was advocating hard for Richt’s firing at the end of last season because it was obvious he was done. Now we’ll have a season-long farewell tour. A wasted season in other words. Predictable.

“I would suspect that St. Mary’s Home for Unwed Mothers might be a challenge.”

Especially since the UGA players are the babydaddies. :-)

Yeah, Jeff, go ahead and pay attention to GT putting over 600 yards of rushing on Kansas. UGA will still beat the Jackets, again and again. The Dogs will be in it in the end. And nobody will want to play them. Count on it.

Great song – “White Shoes & Silver Britches”, an ode to Athens & UGA gamedays by Mac Leaphart from Charleston, SC.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OcQHPVJT_C8

Mac’s a Georgia fan and is playing in Oxford, MS this weekend at a bar on the Square called The Levee Friday night and then at a place just outside of town called Foxfire Ranch on Sunday. Who’s making the trip to Oxford?

Georgia won. Woohoo. Who gives a **** when they were playing a crappy team, and over the a win is a win statement. Play some real teams and then we’ll talk. Good for FSU last night, they played hard, and if they played Georgia, they would have shot a seminole arrow up some bulldawg butt.

For those of you paying attention, Jeff Shultz and the fine editors at the AJC made a mistake:

“The last non-sellout came in Jim Donnan’s final game against Georgia Tech in 200.”

You should be on the hotseat for this kind of mistake.

Generally when Ga get’s a win like this, they will brag for about 8 or 9 months. Don’t worry about them staying down for long. In fact, they will trash Coastal for a long time. They will question why they even have a team. They will call them all sorts of names. They will talk about them like they are white trash.
Keep it classy ga.

Whiskey Breath, Coastal Carolina is already forgotten in the minds of Bulldog fans — trust me. Also, don’t give us crap about playing easy competition — UGA is one of the least offenders in this category. Who do you pull for? These schools need these match-ups for the pay day to build their programs. Ask any GA Southern fan what they think about UGA. They will tell you they respect the program because we started playing them back when they needed the revenue and the big boys wouldn’t play them because they were a powerhouse in the Southern Conference (remember Michigan vs. Appalachain State?). How many times as GA Tech played in-state GA Southern so far — none.

JS, You sportswriters need to get over yourself. 800 students not picking up theri tickets is hardly a “NO SELL OUT” headline. My son (a first year freshman) only got a partial season ticket package (due to the lottery system) would ahve loved to have had a student ticket to the game, I had to buy him a $45.00 ticket to get into the game. The AD needs to fix the student ticket problem — the current system is broken. I know this going to be hard for you to believe but not all of the student body at UGA gets an opportunity to even go to the games. The last I heard they were begging students to come to the games at Grant Field.

That quote from the “coach” really says it all. He once AGAIN reaffirms his completely lackadaisical attitude: “it’s not a big deal.” Same way he feels about losses, same way he feels about his players doing something stupid on or off the field. He has no fire about ANYTHING – how can we expect/demand better when the headcoach himself only pulls his head out of the sand long enough to remind everybody that our mediocrity is “no big deal.”

I was driving thru Mississippi – listening to the local sports talk radio stations, because I cannot take the country music. Fans of the Ole Miss football program said they need a new coach to bring back the glory days to Ole Miss and have the confederate flag flying again. Wow, being from Chicago, I never heard such open hatred outside of political talkshow host. What talented football or basketball player would want to attend Ole Miss. I guess they thought their history would not catch up to them and how the rest of the country outside of the SEC views Ole Miss. I guess that’s college football as a whole, your greed will be your downfall. Schools & coaches can chase money but not expect the players (sorry, fieldhands) not do the same thing. Students attend schools in the SEC because of pride and tradition; athletes attend the same universities to get the NFL or (NBA – Kentucky basketball). Realize that athletes don’t love your school like you. Because there was not tradition for them before integration, that’s keeping it 100%

You are either an insular idiot who has led an extremely sheltered life OR a liar .

I will admit that it is indeed possible that you are some left wing weinie who has only frequented yuppie bars and parties in Shicago to avoid getting your ass beat when you pop off stupidity like you did above .

However , IF you want to hear some of the most vocal people in America use truly STRONG language … BACK IN CHICAGO … go to some of the bars where the REAL WORKING CLASS people actually hang out . You won’t hear discussions about simply flying a piece of history there . What you WILL hear if one of s dozen different subject scomes up are people more than willing to slam all varieties of minorities with epithets that will burn the hair of your tender little unexposed McNuggets .

Go back to Chicago , run that mouth like I suggested , and save us your sanctimonious B*llsh*t . At least there when you get your azz kicked … it will be by someone from what you seem to think is the land of the holier than thou ….
