‘Explosive’ Falcons just opened season with a dud

What do they say about a picture telling a story? This one of Matt Ryan illustrates the Falcons' day.

What do they say about a picture telling a story? This one of Matt Ryan explains Falcons' day.

CHICAGO – When the Falcons said they wanted to get more explosive this season, did they mean like Wile E. Coyote explosive?

They said the intent was to open up the offense. Stretch defenses. They said they wanted to get more aggressive on defense. Pressure opposing quarterbacks. Let it fly, baby. Light the fuse. Problem is, when you don’t follow your own directions, it’s easy to inadvertently wire your big toe to the ACME dynamite kit. Then when you push the plunger on the season opener . . .

Boom!

The Falcons opened the season Sunday. Three hours later, all the remained was a pile of ashes.

Chicago Bears 30, Falcons 12. How’s that for your potential Super Bowl team? Instead of giving you a reason to forget their 48-21 playoff loss to Green Bay last January, the Falcons succeeded only in extending the hangover. They have been outscored in their last two games by 45 points.

And about that 0-4 record in the preseason. Maybe it’s not so meaningless after all.

“Stunned is an understatement,” linebacker Mike Peterson said.

“This isn’t what we planned on — it was awful,” Roddy White said.

It was worse than that. It was inexcusable.

Was all that talk about explosiveness just lip service? This was a season opener. This game followed months of hearing coaches, players and the front office talking about the need for wows and pyrotechnics on both sides of the ball. The Falcons traded a blur of draft picks so they could move up to draft wide receiver Julio Jones. They snagged defensive end Ray Edwards in free agency. They talked a big game.

But when the gates open, they pressed the trigger and a  flag saying, “Bang!” popped out. The Bears didn’t play dead.

Many Falcons players chose to credit Chicago’s defense for playing a strong game and taking away the deep threat. But quarterback Matt Ryan and offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey seldom left the impression they were in attack mode. Ryan never threw deep. Never. He says he thought about it several times but there was nothing there. Ryan also committed two horrific mistakes — an interception by Brian Urlacher, which led to a second-quarter touchdown when the game was still 3-3, and fumbling in the third quarter, leading to an Urlacher return for another score.

Ryan also was hoping to leave his Green Bay playoff performance behind him. This didn’t help. He has five turnovers and one touchdown pass in his last two games.

The Falcons didn’t just look bad. They self-destructed. They did things that good teams, let alone Super Bowl contenders, never should do. The defense missed tackles, took bad angles on plays and blew coverages. They turned Jay Cutler (312 yards, two touchdowns) into Sid Luckman. They introduced Roy Williams, who got drop-kicked out of Dallas, to relevancy.

They were beat physically. Chicago defense may be good but it’s hardly Monsters, redux. This isn’t 1941 or 1985.

Offensively, the Falcons looked and played timid. They lined up White on one side, Jones on the other,  and Tony Gonzalez and Harry Douglas between the two, as advertised. Then they cowered. Chicago often dropped eight players into coverage and taking away the deep ball. But don’t great players and great coaches adjust? They make plays. Instead, we were subjected to four quarters of check-downs.

Coach Mike Smith acknowledged the poor performance but he tried to temper concerns with, “Let’s not say the sky is falling.”

Gonzalez also sought to calm the masses.

“People outside the organization are going to push the panic button,” he said. “They’re going to think, ‘Oh my God. Overhyped. Over this. Over that. You know what? They’re full of it. If you want to think that, go ahead. Maybe it sells papers. Maybe it gives people something to talk about.  But it’s one game. We’ve got the players to do something special. We just have to go out next week and play better. And we will next week, I guarantee it.”

Nobody should doubt the Falcons can still be a great team. But opening performances like this tend to alter perspectives, especially with Michael Vick and Philadelphia coming to the Georgia Dome next week.

Overhyped? It’s probably too early for such proclamations. But it would at least be nice to see the Falcons attempt what they advertised.

After watching that Carolina game, it may not be that far-fetched to say Matt Ryan could be the division’s worst quarterback by the end of next season.

Look, people, including Atlanta fans, took the Bears lightly. Which is odd, since the Bears played the Packers far better last year than the Falcons did. The Bears are just a better team than Atlanta. There was no surprise in this game, just in the pointspread beforehand.

To say today was deflating is an understatement. They looked unprepared on defense and just plain inept on offense. There’s enough blame to go around to EVERYONE.

Our defensive coordinator needs to be re-evaluated. We didn’t cover, couldn’t tackle and got only sporadic pressure on the QB.

And I hope OUR Offensive Coordinator took note of how effective screen passes can be to offset the opposing defense’s pass rush.

Now on to MV7 and the Philly Dream Team. I REALLY hope our our pro team doesn’t start out 0-2 also.

I’m not panicking yet. But I would say Mike Mularkey and Brian Van Gorder have about two more games before the murmurs about firing them that began after the Green Bay debacle last year grow a heck of a lot louder. I’d say the Falcons were vanilla on both sides of the ball, but I actually like vanilla. If the Falcons D can’t do better than that against Jay Cutler and his lousy group of receivers, I hate to think what is going to happen against the likes of the Eagles, Packers and Saints.

You cannot blame Ryan for the loss; he did not play defense. Also, the O-Line could not keep the Bears off of him. Give him some credit. The Falcons got destroyed by Aaron Rogers in the playoffs bacause their secondary is horrible. Cutler exposed that glaring weakness again today. The Falcons did not need offensive help in the offseason, the needed defensive, especially secondary help. Going to be a long season…..

Also, DavidV is right. The O-line was horrible. Ryan wasn’t that bad. He still threw for over 300 yards despite spending all day with a pocket collapsing or running for his life. Urlacher made a good play on that INT. Receivers dropped balls all over the place. Defense didn’t tackle. Eric Weems doesn’t want to field punts. Our kickoff man can’t put the ball in for a touchdown. Lots and lots of problems.

But i bet all of you idiots moaning about that would be doin the same type of complaining if he took his shots down field into double coverage all day too right? Cant have it both ways guys. sorry to tell you. Its also not Matt Ryans jonb to call the plays, they come from upstairs, and Mularkey is a serious handicap to this offense, so please, blame Ryan for his happy feet and his lack of checks at the line of scrimmage, but not for making SMART choices to check the ball down or calling plays, HE CANT CONTROL THAT

Micheal Turner-yes did have 100 yards rushing, but I’d like to know why they put a Jaquez Rogers on their team. Running backs are getting smaller and smaller these days. Yes, Jaquez had a good preseason, but I would have overuled that decision and gotten some odd 253 pounder to push Micheal Turner. As for Ryan-you got what you got-no more, no less. He is who he is and nothing more. Teams can win with a Matt Ryan, but let’s not make him out to be a Rogers(who is clearly better) or even a Brees. At this point the Falcons fans and those who’ve been watching ever since Matt Ryan came to Atlanta-he’s a winner, but he has to have the pieces around him to showcase his skill set.

Piss Poor performance from a so-called Super bowl contender. The offensive game plan stunk, the defense was pathetic.I have seen better tackling at the middle school level of football.Fulton Co, Sheriffs should arrest D.Robinson and T.DeCoud, they are stealing money from the Falcons.M.Mularkey and BVG had terrible game plans. The whole team was outplayed, outcoached and out hustled. To come out and put on a performance like that after you wait all off season to avenge a horrible playoff loss last season was just pathetic.Mr.Blank,you should withhold all checks due to poor work performance.I can only guess what M.Vick and the Eagles are thinking now.Everyone was so ready to annoint this team as the “team” that would finally take it to the next level. Think again, this team is far from that. The pass defense is still weak,no consitant QB pressure. O-line is suspect. What happened to the explosive plays downfield? I was expecting a spirited, determined, fired up group of Falcons today. What we all saw was a group of unsure, non-passionate , undetermined players who got their butts kicked up and down soldier field.I only can imagine what the Vick led Eagles are going to do next week.

Same ole chuck and duck. Would New England or Pittsburg trade away their future for an unproved receiver? Not likely. Michael Jenkins was a perfectly good target but if your QB can only throw twenty yards then you are screwed. Teams play both safties forward because anything over twenty is a floater.
I’ve been watching this team play defense for thirty years through Bobby Butler and Deon. They have never fielded a team that’s stopped the big play

Speaking of D. How do you not pressure the QB but then not cover receivers? Bears were able to do both! But yet we get more excuses on how we can’t have both. I’ll settle for one of the 2.

Offense and Ryan are out of excuses. 4 yrs into it, Ryan should be much more along in the process. Is Ryan another Romo?

Brian VanGorder we have got to play better pass defense a blitz here or there mix some coverages but get out of this basic zone defens that a middle school could shred!! Ryan looked bad, to be sure. But with the offensive line playing matador (which should have been no surprise to Mularkey after viewing the tape of Joe Hawley in the preseason which I assume he must have), WHERE WERE THE SCREENS? Snelling is an excellent pass catching back. Rodgers may have been designed by god as the perfect back to throw a screen to; I had assumed that’s why we drafted him. Chicago was eating our @$$es alive with the same screens we should have been running all game long, and we didn’t seem to notice. Instead, MM ran EXACTLY the same incredibly boring, predictable offense he’s run since he got here and looked astounded that it didn’t work again.

We keep hearing from media folk (even Jeff) that MM is an innovative OC. This is the fourth year, and I have yet to see him even make a basic adjustment much less be innovative. Utter nonsense.

BVG is starting to look more and more overmatched at the NFL level. Players were routinely out of position, taking bad angles, overpursuing and tackling poorly. Yeah, we get it that most of training camp didn’t happen. But why did that affect us and not Chicago, Green Bay or New Orleans?

By my estimation (and that of most folks coming into this game), Chicago is not nearly as talented a team as Atlanta. But just like with the Bulldogs, it doesn’t too much matter how much talent you have if the coaches can’t figure out how to use it.

I’ve revised my 10-6 prediction to 8-8 after this debacle. I just can’t see the Falcons keeping up with the Packers, Eagles, Saints, Lions, or Texans…and they will lose to either Indy or Jax. If Cam Newton stays hot, this could end up being 6-10 easily. Changes will be made in the coaching staff and Mike Smith’s seat will get much warmer by the end of this season. Also, Matt Ryan will come more into question as whether he is the QB that can actually take the Falcons to the promised land. It’s amazing how much you can tell after an 0-4 preseason and a loss in the first game of the season…but you really can.

Well stated, Mr. Schultz. If you’re bending over backward to say you’re intending to accomplish specific things as a team (namely pressure the opposing quarterback and stretch the field with the deep ball) and then come out in the inaugural game of the season and do exactly the opposite, there’s far more to be angry about as a fan than just the loss here. Whether it’s Matt Ryan or Mike Mularkey, somebody is seriously hamstringing the offense; it’s like a kid who’s afraid to pull the car out of the driveway once they get their license. You’ve got the weapons now guys; what you no longer have is an EXCUSE! Fail this season to deliver and heads should most definitely roll!

Who knew Todd McClure was that important? The O-line was a revolving door. The CBs were covering the waterboys. If you invite your opponent to sack your QB, and you give opposing receivers a 10-yard cushion, you wind up with a loss like today’s.

I don’t think the Falcons lack talent. There’s something else going on — or not going on.

it doesn’t matter if ryan isn’t a top tier QB. you can win Super Bowls without one. The o-line looked lost, and outside of Abraham and Biermann the defense looked just as bewildered.

Gotta shore this up immediately.

I don’t give 2 damns about “explosive plays”, you can win games running the football and playing good D. and we don’t have a very good D right now, by the looks of it. Spoon and Dunta MUST step up.

As ticked as I am, I’m inclined to hold off judgement on the Birds until I see this team play 4 games or so. I remember when the Pats lost to the Bills 31-0 in week 1 in 2003, and they won the Super Bowl that year. Also, we didn’t exactly light the world on fire in the opener last year and still won 13 games. The turnovers made the game look worse than it was, so let’s calm down.

I refuse to believe the Steelers, Falcons, AND the Giants are this bad. I also refuse to believe that the Rex Grossman led Redskins, Chan Gailey coached Bills, and the Cade McCown Jaguars are THIS good. Something weird was in the water today.

Back to the Birds: these guys have to be getting reamed out right now. This is a wake up call of the first order. The Falcons got the Eagles next week. They better get it together fast.

I’m so tired of the one game argument. Yeah, it’s one game, but pretty soon it could be one more, then another one and then another. Just like UGA, this second game has HUGE implications for the psyche of this team and it’s fans.

I’ve always been a Ryan fan, but he’s regressed terribly. Frankly, getting Tony Gonzalez was just about the “worst” thing to happen to Ryan and his development.

As for Mularkey, I think it’s plain to see, not just after today, but after the last two seasons that he’s not cutting it. There is no flow to the game, no playing to the strengths of the offense…nothing.

I’m depressed.

Why are we surprised? We didn’t lose to the packers because our number two WR wasn’t good enough? They made one move for the defense that couldn’t stop anybody last year and he didn’t show up at all on the stat sheet. They partially dismantled an offensive line that was dominate and this one couldn’t protect Ryan at all today. They hardly ever took a shot down field before jones arrived. I think it is time to remove Mularky from OC and time to begin thinking that Ryan isn’t going to be the one to stretch the field out at all. He didn’t do that at BC and he hasn’t done that here yet. Because so far, all we have from the offense the last two games is mularky. Pure crap.

I agree with some poor decisions by Ryan, but the O-line was terrible. Bears in his face and all over him all game. I hope it isnt another year of a poor secondary, but it sure looks like it right now. Dunta Robinson is a bust so far and Decoud better pull in some of those easy interceptions or put in the guys we picked up at the end of preseason. VanGorder what is with the dropping a D-lineman into coverage on 3rd and long, how about some pressure. Cutler is the kind of quaterback to fold under pressure.

On a positive note I thought the Defensive line played great and Roddy had some good catches. Turner had some yards, but I sure wish he could run faster!! The rookie RB showed some promise. True that the Bears secondary took away the long ball, but I still think that Ryan has to take some of those shots to keep them honest. Too cautious sometimes, but he needs some time, not 5min, but some time.

Tough game next week, but I will still be on the couch rooting for the Birds.

The Falcons are my team. I’m not going to jump off the bandwagon because of one game.

First, the good news. They’re still tied for first in the division. And our focus has been and will still be to win the division.

The bad. The defense played bad, the O-line was worse. (I don’t know how much blame you can place on Ryan or Turner when they’re not getting the blocking). I’m really surprised no one mentioned the one person that the Falcons really miss. Harvey Dahl. Reynolds looked lost, and everyone should know by now that Baker needs help (especially against Peppers).

Yes, we have a rough schedule, and yes, we played really bad. But we did lose Week 1 last year and still found a way to have the best record in the NFC (fwiw, I do not expect that to happen this year).

Hopefully everyone within the organization will take this whipping personally and turn things around next week.

Go Falcons!

We waited all summer for this. The Falcons might be the worst team in the NFC South. They can’t score they can’t block they can’t cover or tackle. So next week don’t expect much different until they get aggressive on defense. The Offense need to use screens and block somebody. You can’t blame the QB if he don’t have time to throw. They can lose next week and still make the playoffs, but they better make changes.

This course has run and this team with its vaunted QB will not be anything else but a one and done in any playoff scenario. Defense as a whole is inept. Offense is relegated to field goal attempts if lucky enough to get on that side of the field. Less-than-special teams play. Kicking and returning SUCKS. They got their hat handed to them by a good team today. Now lets see just how good they really are. Philly comes in here next week and if the Falcons consider themselves as Super Bowl contenders the will need to show it. Green Bay looked average most of last season (injury induced) but got it together and won the Super Bowl.

Is he better than Drew Brees, nope. Freeman is about a half a season and another “explosive” wideout from being very dangerous to go along with that huge upside that he has. Cam newton haters, that kid showed today what a coach that realizes he has weapons can do. They have a QB that stay on his feet long enough to get Steve Smith the ball. With our safeties, that should send shivers down all of your spines…

0-5 you have to be concerned! If we would have found a way to keep M. Jenkins with Jones, Roddy, Gonzalas, Douglas plus the beast Dalh on the OL then the Offense would have been explosive. The OL is not Super Bowl or All Pro caliber. The DL either, we did a POOR JOB tackling. TD and CMS had better take a look at that roster and see what is available and stop messing around. The competition is explosive, we just can’t afford to sit still and rest on last year, we are the hunted! It looks like we are so interested in making the FALCONS explosive instead of playing what got the Falcons on the throne last year, Turner and Snelling pounding.

“Najeh, you usually bring some relevant information and perspective to the conversation. That comment about Ryan being the worst QB in the division is straight out of the deranged, hate-driven playbooks of blog agitators like Falcons Sorry and “Choke”. You disappoint me, sir.”

I didn’t say he is the worst QB in the division. I said it is not that hard to envision a scenario where he could be the worst QB in the division by the end of next season. Freeman is statistically his equal and younger than him, and Newton looked every bit as poised today as Ryan did three years ago in his debut against Detroit.

“I know Cam had a great game. But its only 1 game, and it was against the Cardinals, a team not not exactly known for their offense.”

True, it was only one game. It was also, by yardage, the greatest debut game a rookie QB has ever had. It is of course possible that when Newton faces better defenses — like next week against Green Bay — that he will suck. But today I saw him face complicated blitz schemes and maintain his footwork, keep his eyes downfield, and consistently hit the open man. He looked every bit as poised as Matt Ryan did against Detroit (another horrible defense) in his debut, and considerably more poised than Vick did in his rookie year. For a guy coming out of a single-read system, to play that way in his first game against a non-traditional defensive scheme was phenomenal.

Like I said, maybe better defenses will bring him back to Earth, but the way he put up those numbers today told me that this game was not a fluke.

What bothers me is that when you look at other teams in this league, they lose games but not like this. I blame the entire organization, a few beat writers and fans for drinking the kool-aid. If I hear about this 13-3 season one more time, I swear I’m going to lose it. PEOPLE that was last year. Get over it. The fact of the matter is that we were never as good as out record indicated, and any TRUE falcon fan would know that. This loss doesn’t surprise me, the way we loss does. Coming into the season with all of this “explosive play” talk and to come out and lose like this angers me. I feel like I’ve been lied to all off season. Though there were a few positives from this game (very few) the horrible plays/play calling greatly outweighed them. The one positive that I can take away from this game is that we have the most high character guys on this team than any other in the league. Too bad that doesn’t win games…

Najeh, if you indeed watched the Panthers game today, you would have seen that first long touchdown to Smith was quite underthrown and Smith was about 10-15 yards wide open behind the defenders. If you can’t make that throw, you don’t play in the NFL. I also saw Cam throw a “checkdown” pass at the end of the game, short of the 1st down, when he needed to get it in the endzone. Next.

Yes, I watched the entire game. I did not say Cam Newton was perfect. But he did put up the highest yardage total for a rookie QB EVER. More than Matt Ryan, more than Peyton Manning (the previous record holder), more than Dan Marino… more than EVERYONE. And he didn’t do it by throwing 80 check down passes either — he had 11.4 yards per attempt today, and he was taking shots down the field in the face of constant blitzing. If you are going to take two throws in a quarterback’s debut and dismiss him because of that, I wonder what your reaction was when Matt Ryan followed up his terrific debut by going 0 for 12 to start Week 2 against the Bucs that year.

Why can’t the owner?
Cam newton of the panthers threw for over 400 yards today in his 1st NFL game..First time a rookie EVER threw for that yardage in his 1st game..why can’t we trade M.R. and the offensive line for C.N.?…I don’t see these Falcons advancing their pedigree..If anything there digressing!!

Pocket management-I agree with Who Me?. Matt Ryan needs to stop being scared and step up into the pocket and fire the @#nm ball to his “explosive” receivers. The good news is that it was the first game and not the seventh game. Adjustments can and will be made. A game like this can set the tone for the rest of the season: good or bad. John Madden once said that you cannot evaluate a team until the seventh or eighth game into the regular season. A word of caution to the Falcons: a game two loss would deepen the hole of a culture of losing, which this team can easily slip into very quick-if nothing is done at ALL LEVELS-to stop the bleeding. Blank-step up and get into the face of your subordinates and let the @$%t roll downhill.

The most alarming thing to me is how there were no apparent adjustments made at halftime to attack the Bears defense. Sure the wheels kind of came off for various reasons, but the offensive attack showed zero imagination. I mean *none*.

And that Ryan pick to Urlacher was not a good omen. He had a CB he could’ve/should’ve easily shed and then found a receiver or run. Instead he freaked out and served up the INT. That wasn’t exactly Julius Peppers on him—he panicked for no reason. This is not what you need from a guy with 50+ NFL starts under his belt, to say the least.

The Bears had 1 LEGIT scoring drive all day(even that was a 56 yard run by Forte). 3 turnovers will sink any team when the defense is as strong as the Bears, so spare everyone with the sky is falling talk.

As far as Ryan, he made great throws all game(even the pick wasn’t a bad throw). Combine the drops with the prevent defense in the 2nd half and it made for a vanilla offense. Mularkey does need to open it up(before they’re down by 15 points).

There’s no excuse for the secondary play tho, there was no need to play so much zone against the Bears WRs.

Talk facts with me… Tell me the 11 above .500 teams that the Falcons lost to, then you’ll line the sorry under coach line-up that Falcons rolled out there and you’ll understand why…

I honestly agree with Navenpoop, Ryan may be the worst QB in the division. He has regressed everyone of his 3 years after his rookie season and doesnt have a strong enough arw which is probably why he never attempts any deep balls. Additionally, the offensive scheme is horrendous and the defense is equally pitiful. Bring back Glanville, at least he had balls, something this coaching staff lacks.

Lovie Smith is so ingenious with his Tampa-2 that he can prevent his opponents from even trying to challenge his guys deep. And the defense not only prevents ATTEMPTS at deep passes, it also bottles up the short pass and prevents ATTEMPTS into the end zone. And yes, as an added bonus, there is enough left over to also stop the run.

Lovie Smith is a pure genius. (Why didn’t Blank hire him instead of Mora?)

I wonder, since the Tampa-2 can stop teams from even ATTEMPTING to challenge our guys, since it stops teams from even ATTEMPTING to throw into the end zone, why don’t we deploy it exclusively? It is obviously the perfect, fool-proof defense, impossible to score against.

What are we waiting for??? Let’s play Tampa-2 so that we can go 15-1 and not yield any down field ATTEMPTS the rest of the year!

I am too lazy to go back through Vick’s career and fact check that, but off the top of my head, Vick beat the 10-win Giants twice last year, so he most certainly wasn’t 0-2 against 10 win teams last year.

In any event, if you are going to compare Ryan to Vick, you are fighting a losing and fruitless battle. Ryan is not in Vick’s league until he wins playoff games. It’s simple really, I don’t care who the qb is, if there is no pass protection, they all look bad. I missed the Dahl trade reporting but I was concerned when I heard it. Dahl had a rep as a tought, intimidating, and dirty player. He may have been the spirit of the OL. I don’t know but I heard he was good. Is his non-presence the reason the OL played so poorly? I thought the GM was supposed to have a nose for talent. What happened here? Anyway, first game but this was not what you want to see anytime. They were beaten in every phase of the game and this always goes back to coaching. Forget criticism of Matt, ask what in the hell happened to the coaching? The team was not ready. Our players are simply average and our defensive schemes are average. Does anybody think if we had hired Ryan that our D would still suck? most of the guys couldn’t start on the Jets. This team has been lucky and is regressing.

ATL Defense certainly gets as much blame as Ryan. That “attempt” at tackling Forte early on was a joke of an effort by the team. To even let a Cutler-led team defeat you that thoroughly speaks volumes as to where a huge part of this team’s problems lie.

Plus, Ryan can’t (not won’t) throw downfield. Guy’s got a weak arm, sorry Falcon fans. Did he even attempt a bomb today?

Can someone tell me why we gave away 4 draft choice for Julio Jones? It’s nothing against julio but when your OC don’t know how to call plays it seems like we wasted these draft picks. Plain & simple we need a coaching staff that knows how to call plays on both sides of the ball. When will Mike Smith take it upon himself to tell his coaching staff to RISE UP or RAISE OUT. I’m tired of hearing we got out coached or out played. Please Mr. owner, Mr. GM, & Mr. Pres. find yourself a coaching staff that can coach this team because the one you have now they will never RISE UP when they have too!!!!

Having said my piece about Ryan, though, I think y’all are way overreacting to this loss.

Look at the splits last year for Ryan. QB rating indoors: 100.2. QB rating outdoors: 76.2. The Falcons were 9-2 indoors and 4-2 outdoors. Safe to say, they are a much, much better team when they are playing under a roof, and 12 of their final 15 games this season are in a dome. I am not that surprised that they underperformed today, but I wouldn’t be concerned unless they lay an egg next week.

What people don’t seem to realize is that Mike Smith never bought into the wide open offensive philosophy. The proverbial 3 yards and a cloud of dust is his style. As long as he’s coach don’t expect that to change. This will make the trade for Julio a huge failure cause he won’t get used the way TD wants. Look for a rising conflict between TD & Smith in the coming weeks. Smith is a very conservative coach and won’t change.

Just one game and everyone in the division lost today, so we are basically tied for 1st place.

However, we lost all the the preseason games, which is basically practice and no game planning. We lost to Green Bay last year, who ended up being the Super Bowl Champions, no shame there, but it was last year and has nothing to do with our record this year, which as stated we are tied for 1st place.

The problem we are all having is looking at our history, kinda like the Braves winning 14 division titles and only one World Series championship. Impressive yes, but the same scenario played out year after year.

Back to the Falcons, for years we have had a terrible defense, in that we can’t get off the field in 3rd down and long. We can’t tackle on a consistent basis, our secondary is not very good, we can’t get pressure on the quarterback…thus we see no improvement in game one of this year, which reminds us of years past.

Our team was 13 & 3 last year, so expectation is higher, but we wait to see if things are really different…our reality in game one is same as years past. We add new weapons on offense and talk about explosive plays and we get none of that. We don’t even get an offensive touchdown, we continue to get only field goals, which guess what seems just like last year.

Our quarterback went to the Pro Bowl last year, most quarterbacks going into their fourth year make quantum leap. Our Pro Bowl quarterback is still making rookie mistakes…rolling to throw the ball to Urlacher and moving around in the pocket with no one touching him and fumbling the ball, again Urlacher recovers; both miscues leads to scores as a result of a short field. I should say these are mistakes he did not make his rookie season. Now contrast him to every quarterback in our division that played their game one of the season and he was the worst. Brees kept his team in the game to the end, Cam Newton threw for over 400 yards as a rookie, and Freeman also played a better game. We need for Ryan to play better, but his last few games as a starter he sucks…nothing to do with Mike Vick in comparison. We get to see that head to head matchup next week.

Speaking of that…fans will be confused next week, making this practically a home game for the Eagles dream team. Kyle Orten is no Michael Vick, but we speculate that it might not be pretty with a speedy running quarterback and improved pocket passing skill, which was never on display here as a Falcon. Now with the weapons he has at his disposal, our secondary will get worked over again. Our defensive ends will have to contain vs rushing the passer or Vick will run crazy. I say that because last year we got killed all season long with quarterbacks running right up the middle.

So yes it is just one game, but they look the same. Could it be Murlarkey & Van Gorder are still here with the same offensive & defensive schemes that just do not work…definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result!

Fans here have seen and heard it all before!

Perhaps we should have given Dahl more money and kept him instead off rookie WR? Don’t blame this on Ryan, who threw for over 300 yards, I’ll admit he did make a couple bad plays under duress. Vick had a less than stellar game, but the good news for him is that he and the offense as a whole got better as the game went along. They looked really out of sync in the first quarter but things got smoother for them as the game went along. The Rams have a good D-line, so it’s not like it was going to be a cakewalk for them anyway.

Next week’s game will be interesting for both teams. Interesting to see if the Eagles can come out of the gates clicking on offense (I am particularly interested to see the Brent Grimes-DeSean Jackson matchup) and to see if the Falcons’ O line can handle the Eagles’ pressure.

The defense made choker Cutler look like a hall of famer today.. LOL.. I really think the Falcons are not as good as the experts think they are..
If they come out like this next week, dont even watch the game, Philly blows them out like Green Bay did.. It feels like they need a miracle, and pre season is more important than you think.
If falcons lose next week, here are the rankings for the NFC South and probably end of season:

Saints X= Playoff team
Panther
Falcons
Tampa bay

Reasoning, if you are an contender and lost 4 games in the preseason. Get blown out on the road, Saints showed more heart.. I hope everyone sees Van Gorder is the weak link on the coaching staff… Her needs to get replaced with his Marion Campbell (bend dont break) defense.. Even the experts are second guessing the Falcons as we post, saying if we lose, the Falcons are not as good as they thought they were.

WHERE TO PLACE THE BLAME???

Matt Ryan is a good quarterback; not great, but a ‘good’ QB. I like to say he is a safe quarterback, cause for the most part he keeps cool and doesn’t make the big turnover (gotta love the timing of this right). But that is also what keeps im from taking the next step. Great quarterbacks take chances to make the big plays. Ryan doesn’t have a big arm, isn’t the most accurate and is one of the least mobile QB’s in the league, but (until today) has gotten it done. Maybe this is who he is or maybe he has gotten all that he can out of Mularkey’s offense.

Now this doesn’t nearly all fall on Ryan. There were plenty of missed tackles, dropped passes, special teams miscues and just crappy play in general. The secondary still sucks, the opposing QB’s stay very comfortably in the pocket and we can’t get off the field on 3rd down for anything. I don’t know if the defense got tired out quickly because the offense kept going 3 and out but whatever.

Definitely not ready to contend for a superbowl, but it is just the first game and hopefully we’ll learn (a lot) from this ass-whuppin. Still think we can do some positive things, but the journey doesn’t get any easier with Vick and co. coming to town.

Decoud — two picks make this a different ball game.

Dunta — see Ice above.

ijonathan – I watched most of the game. Ryan interception was outstanding diving interception by Uralocker and he was running for his life when he laid ball on ground and fumbled. He did not play great game but was not as terrible as it sounds. My take on game is bad tackling on D, not enough pressure on QB, bad coverage, safetys dropped several interceptions in their hands. Terrible punting(35 yd average), poor KO return decisions. O had a 100 yard runner, 300 yds passing, but was limited to short passes because of Bear coverage. Too many poor performances to single out 1 guy!

Why wasn’t Rodgers not put into the game until 2nd half? Needed him on screens and wide runs. Why did Weems not run up and fair catch short punts? Letting them roll put us in bad field position several times. Did we ever blitz Cutler? Can’t we play pressure defense like Jets and Bears, or are out guys and scheme not good enough? Looks like we stayed back in zone all day and their receivers just ran to the open areas. Mularkey ever hear of a play action on 1st down when we are in the Red Zone? Seems like we always run Turner on first down. Boring, Predictable offense.

I’ve been saying all along that the Falcons overachieved and lucked their way to that 13-3 record last year. That statement has consistently been met with resistance on this blog. I’ve said all along that this team would not win the division and might not make the playoffs this season. Again, my statements were ridiculed. And I predicted this team would finish between 7-9 and 9-7. That too did not go over well on this blog. I have maintained my position that this defense DID NOT get fixed in the offseason. I will stick to all of those predictions even though the Falcons are only 0-1.

Only one game for the Falcons but they better have a GREAT game plan because this week gets no easier thats for sure. Braves need their starting pitching to get healthy and stay healthy. UGA needs to get a couple of wins under their belt and then they will be fine. Rough weekend though. But hey, it will pass. No wonder the rest of the country looks down on Atlanta as one of the worst sports cities. It certainly doesn’t help that there’s only one newspaper in town and the writers must get a drama queen bonus each week for the most alarmist article.
Yes, it was bad, but it was just one game. No sane person would jump to conclusions based on that. Case in point, the Steelers got blown out worse than the Falcons. Are their postseason chances flushed down the toilet? Is anyone predicting that they will finish below .500?

There is a big difference between the Steelers and Falcons. Steelers have been there and done that and have credibility. The Falcons DO NOT have credibility!!! So do not compare the 2 teams. WOW…I’m amazed that everything is put on MR’s shoulders, he doesn’t make the gameplan, he threw for over 300 yds while running for his life. The problem is Mularkey does not have a creative offensive bone in his body. He has the talent, White/Jones/Gonzalez, etc., he simply doesn’t know how to design a game plan to take advantage of this talent. Also the O-line sucked today, against Chicago physical is the game and the Falcons’ line couldn’t handle it. As for the defense, our D Backs have to be the worst in the league, they can’t cover and/or tackle and their Zone Coverage just doesn’t work. Rumeal (sp) just isn’t worth the money given to him. The D-line played well, except for Mr. Edwards, who was no were to be found. As for Witherspoon it was a bad mistake on the one tackle, but I like what he brings to the table. I’m confident they will turn it around and be the team they were at least last year, but to do this it requires a better plan from the O & D Co-ordinators. My only concern is whether or not Mularkey and BVG have the imagination to make this happen?

Amazing how the Atlanta masses are still protecting Ryan, as if no one can criticize our “franchise” QB. Look, I want more than anything for him to turn out to be the real deal. Fact is, he doesn’t play to win…he plays not to lose (see the millions of check downs). Even if there’s tight coverage on the deep routes, throw it up & let your receivers try to make a play. Players that play to win don’t just “take what the defense gives” them. To do such a thing means you’re simply playing into their hands…falling into their gameplan…doing exactly what they want you to do. They are, in turn, the dictators. It would be nice to see our QB find a way to dictate, as the truly great QB’s do. Of all the “intangibles” folks claim Ryan has, I find it disturbing that none of those “intangibles” seem to mean anything against agressive, top tier defenses. And before you start with the “he threw for over 300 yards” mess, I say this: I’d rather have a QB throw for 200 yards with no INT’s & one TD than have one throw for over 300 yards with a fumble & an interception. Yes, Ryan has regressed. Let’s hope he can turn it around.

I’m not a bit surprised by this game, in fact, I picked Chicago to win. Alt is a terrible road team and nothing changed my mind about that in this debacle. I like Matt Ryan but I’m really starting to question his toughness, he just checked down all day. O-line looked bad, I knew we’d miss Harvey Dahl and McClure was out, too. Ohh and dare I say, Matty would’ve liked to have his 3rd down security blanket, Finn, there to block and move the chains. Also, he was fab on special teams. This team is a joke. We might be 0-3 with this schedule. At least we’re home next week, it might be a close game but I’m not overly confident about that either.

Even a fourth grader can figure out a succesful scheme against the falcons. Opponents know what Mularkey and Vangroder bring to the table. Someone tell VG that prevent defenses only prevent victories. If I had a brick handy I would’ve thrown it through my TV when I saw Abraham dropping back in coverege on an early 3rd down attempt by the Bears. Mularkey, last year’s hot name, unfortunately didn’t get a coaching gig that he desires which makes me terribly sad. After the Green Bay game though, who could blame anyone for not interviewing him anymore. We need a new offensive co-ordinator desperately and only these blowouts will help. I’m all for a 7-9 or 6-10 season for the Falcons to dump Mularkey.

Ryan hasn’t regressed, the offensive line was abysmal. Ovie was out so they had no help. Look at the INT’s Ryan was throwing off his back foot. He doesn’t have good arm strength with a good foundation it was only going to be terrible with him throwing off his back foot. Matt Ryan is going to be an above average NFL QB but I don’t see him ever rising to elite status (Brees, Rogers) or borderline elite (Vick). He’s a QB that needs protection & he may not get it this year. He’s a ‘by the book’ guy but a great QB has to improvise & find receivers down the field when he’s out of the pocket. He’s not bad but he’s not great & that could mean Falcons squeak in playoffs as wild card & lose in week one. Hope I’m wrong but that’s way I see it.

Remember the Falcons team that went 5-11 the year after going to the Super Bowl? I had visions of that season yesterday. There might be something to this idea of us still having a hangover from the Packers game. It also might have had something to do with the lockout. But, regardless of what the cause was, I’ve never seen the Falcons look so unprepared to play under Mike Smith. We didn’t just make mistakes – we made silly mistakes. It literally looked like the first day of training camp.

DC, son, you may be too young (or a transplant) to know about the Falcons of yesteryear. The team had the same problem when owned by the Smith family all those years. Money and talent was never a problem. Highly regarded players would come, play with the Falcons a while, and either fizzle out or move on to another team and win games. The Smiths were nearly equally on par with Blank in the unlikeable department, just in a different way. Look at the perennial winners in the NFL. Nearly all have great organizations, including great owners.

Hey folks, anybody watch the Cowboys & Jets last night?? Tony blew it at the last few minutes, ask yourselves what are those Cowboy fans saying today. My point is – “How do you want to loss”?? Last nights game was a very good game up till Tony’s il-fated pass attempt to Dez Bryant, “That was ugly”!

The Bears were ready, we were NOT ready. The coach says “We will fix it”!

Relax, set back and let’s see if this Coach or Coaches can work thier magic. This is a “Passing Point” for Mike Smith & his staff. Hey 33-16 is a very impressive record. Now we will see if he really knows how to back-up his words???

“I’m bettin’ on the Coach” he will back-up what he stated & more!!!!

Two things. First, watching Philip Rivers play is a thing of beauty. He KNOWS how to go downfield with the football. It isn’t always about what’s OPEN downfield, it is getting the defense to respect that you intend to go downfield no matter what. You have two fast physical wideouts in RW and JJ and you don’t even give them a chance to make a play!?? That’s criiminal. It’s like having a loaded gun and still let the burglar rob your house. If you are going automatically check down because nothing is OPEN, it is going to be a long season. Second, Van Gorder, teach your defenders how to tackle and put Decoud on a short leash and Cris Owens on an even shorter one and get Kelvin Hayden and James Sanders up to speed and into the starting lineup.

Game was squarely on Matt Ryan. His mistakes, interception on a called roll out not a scramble so don’t blame the OL for that one, and a fumble that he just laid an egg with because he is not very athletic led directly to 14 Bears points. Can’t have your star QB making rookie mistakes againt a good team. Ryan is more like Romo than Manning, Romo made the same two dumb mistakes Ryan made and cost his team the game too.

I think the Birds may have been reading their own press clippings too much and came back to earth yesterday.

By and large, I thought Atlanta could have been in complete control with their start, but the INT followed by the Weatherspoon OLE, really changed the game.

Preparation was lacking in every phase of the Falcons team. To pick out one point however, starting two rookies on the offensive line was the kiss of death. The Falcons have to dedicate themselves to giving 100% next week or get beaten just as badly. This is no home game for them either, as half the people attending will be cheering for Michael Vick, and the other half will be Falcon fans. Life is what it is and you have to deal with that.

I have two comments….(1) Sam Baker needs to go and soon. He was pathetic all day long against their defensive line and (2) Chris Owens needs to be a reserve when no one else is available…….

Why does the defense play so much zone? The CBs never bump the other teams receivers coming off the line of scrimmage to disrupt their pass routes. It just simply does not make sense to be paying Robinson all of that money and not expect him to be able to play tight man-to-man coverage. It’s obvious that Grimes can so why not Robinson? Does the offensive or defensive coordinators understand the meaning of many adjustments at half-time? Why try to run Rogers up the middle? Why not try screen passes to slow the pass rush?? Things that appear to be so-o-o-o-o obvious that make you go WTF!!!!!!!!

As a Falcon follower since game one of the first season I can honestly say it has not been much worse than this! I was so embarrassed after that debacle that I was forced to re-examine the entire season. It was that troublesome! The final score was 30-12 but it seemed more like 60-0. Matthew Ryan transformed into Chris Miller. Michael Turner morphed into Bubba Bean. The defenders could not stay upright long enough to make a tackle even though this gutless effort is far from just a defensive failure. Two dropped interceptions by an untalented bum in the first half who shall remain nameless set the tone for disaster. One of the most nauseating scenes in a day of nauseating scenes took place when Turner broke free but allowed a defender who he had a 15 yard head start on chase him down. Result was no TD. Falcon offense kept Bear EZ virgin. The offense was in the minus points area with two field goals but two Bear TDs. The defense was not that bad. Start with the 30. Subtract six for the defensive score for 24. Subtract 12 more points for the two Bear TDs courtesy of Falcon offense for 12. Should have been 12-12 overtimer. Ryan continues his regression from rookie campaign. Turner better lay off the fast food hamburgers. Defense needs How To Wrap Up When Tackling 101 Primer. OC started out with up tempo offense early. Strange that Falcons slowed things down tremendously offensively after falling behind! Do not think there was an urgency to accomplish anything offensively. Maybe Ryan and company just flat out gave up against the big bad Bear D which the Saints will probably riddle for half a hundred points! Chance to take early division lead wasted. If Falcons fall to 0-2 they will not win South! Best hope at that point will be wild card spot. No certainty there either! Yes. It was that bad!

Bad tackling and turnovers should be fixable, but some things….maybe not so easy.
The bad: Same poor (or maybe worse) pass coverage by the secondary
The disappointing: Same dink & dunk offense (but Matt claims he “thought about” throwing the long ball)
The good??: We should set records this year….Matt has already been sacked 5 times vs the 23 for 2010
C’mon guys……you are breaking our hearts. I followed the game on “NFL dot com” so I may have a different perspective. Good points: Ryan threw for over 300 years. Turner had 100 yds. First downs and time of poss both very respectable. Abe had a couple sacks. We absolutely STUFFED the run on defense. We have ourselves a punter. We had terrible field position in the first half, on the road … tough to get out of that hole. Bad points: no deep passes. Getting burned on big plays. Poor O-line play. Poor tackling. Really questionable play calling. Ryan looked shaky. We are not a good road team. Big picture: No good solid win since Thanksgiving 2010, vs Baltimore (we have lost 7 of our last 8). Look, the Steelers and Colts got blown out too. The entire NFC South is 0-1. We have a lot to work on but we have some serious deficits on defense, o-line and even with Ryan.

Matt Ryan simply has no qualities that people pay to see. His intangibles are good. He did a great job making a bad team a decent one. His tangibles aren’t good enough, and it’s obvious.

People still love Mike Vick because the Falcons haven’t won enough to make them stop harping on the past.

Taking what the defense gives you doesn’t work all the time in the NFL. Everyone is good, you have to make plays. The Cover 2 is designed to allow dink and dunk passes. The Bears got massive pressure with the Front 4. The Falcons have decided not to upgrade the massive hole at left tackle. That’s on them. If they want to go down field, they need to find a Left Tackle that can play because Matt Ryan doesn’t have the arm to make plays down field without a perfect foundation. It’s been 4 years. If he had some zip on the ball we could see it. He doesn’t. He can usually be trusted not to make the plays that lose games. In the last two games. Ryan has not put the Falcons in a position to win.

I don’t care if he recognizes every defense on the field. He had better start proving he can do something athletically or we’ll find a new QB.

And for all of you “fans” that say hey it’s only one game and look at Pittsburgh they lost two. First of all it’s HOW we lost people. A team as highly regarded as the Falcons supposedly are should not make the mistakes that they were making. Our secondary is pathetic, or offensive line is pathetic and we have a QB who could not throw it out of a wet paper sack. Also, the difference between the Steelers and the Falcons is the Steelers have PROVED to their fans over the years that they can still come back and WIN the Super Bowl many, many, many times and the Falcons have PROVED to their fans over the years that they CANNOT!

I am not here to explode or rant at all. It is true it is week one and we could still see the Steelers and Falcons in the Super Bowl at the end of the season so I refuse to say anything rash or that I hope I regret later. So I’ll just say that I am very disappointed in the effort that I saw on the field yesterday, but even more than that isn’t it best to just keep your collective mouths closed and play the game? Didn’t the Falcons know who they were playing week one? Were they surprised that they were playing a Tampa 2 (cover 2) defense? Honestly how many times did I hear the word explosive this off season. Did anyone honestly think that you were going to go into Chicago on opening day a run out the same vanilla offense, and slap an explosive sticker on the side of the box and make it the “greatest show on turf?” Trading all of the picks to get JJ was the right move, because it is what you wanted to do. The next move should have been to keep your mouth closed and execute. It was obvious what was broken last year, and drafting Jones began addressing some of the offensive issues. Do you need to tell the entire league you are going to be explosive on offense? Seriously doesn’t the OC know that a Tampa 2 defense is supposed to keep plays in front of you? So what is point of willingly showing your cards and then choosing not to play those cards? Matt Ryan said he thought about throwing deep a few times but it wasn’t there. What in the world does that mean? Did anyone really believe that Roddy, Harry and Julio were ever going to be wide open by 20 yards behind the safeties? I didn’t because the last time I checked we still have the same OC who has run the same offense for 4 years in Atlanta and hasn’t changed one bit. If there is a huge playbook I haven’t seen it. A good DC, and I consider Lovie to a much better DC than HC, will prepare for what he has seen not what we tell him we are going to do but haven’t ever shown. If the Bears would have prepared for the hype we would have killed them with all the check downs to Snelling and Turner. That was a pathetic excuse… Defensive back boast when they break up a play or the ball isn’t completed but they also know inside that they almost got beat but if you never stretch the field all they do is keep creeping up, because how in the heck is a DC or a defensive back supposed to know that the opposing QB is thinking about throwing it deep??? They game plan for what you do and what you’ve done not what you think about. The run and shoot wasn’t explosive here in Atlanta it just put 4 and 5 WR on the field. My point is that it doesn’t matter your personnel as much as your execution with that personnel. Come on Mike M. do we even know if Harry can get open in the seam of a cover 2 with JJ to his right running a deep route? You have to challenge a team to see if they have weaknesses. You can’t just hope that all 11 defensive players are going to fall down on a 2 yard check down to Snelling and hope he can gain 60 yards and score a TD. You have to make things happen and not hope the defense falls down. Thinking is for the meeting room and half time… execution is for the field. Enough with the offense let’s move to the other side of the field….
I’m going to go out on a limb and say that if the Falcons continue to play zone they will continue to get killed. I never played DB in HS or college but I know enough football to say that if there is someone lined up in front of you and they run past you it is easier to stay with them until they reach the safety than to pretend you are covering him and then let him stand five yards behind you and have no clue where he is and just pray that Thomas or William will cover them. How many times on every down but especially 3rd down did the Falcons defense just stand and watch the Bears just get in the dead part of the zone and make plays. They made Cutler look like a HOF QB yesterday. Good thing we didn’t play Green Bay or the Saints because the Falcons could have lost by 50 points. Look man up unless you are bringing a blitz and if you choose to play zone at least play bump n run for the first 5 yards to throw off the timing between the QB and the receiver. That was awful. Grimes will make plays so I will give him a pass on the two potential INT’s he dropped, because playmakers can’t catch everything but Thomas and Dunta can’t afford to give up plays because they usually don’t make them. It was shameful the way the defense played, because the Bears offense wasn’t potent or even really that good it was just consistent and didn’t turn the ball over. There is something wrong with a defense that almost always gives up a 3rd and long plays. Something is inherently wrong with the core of who you are as a defense when you can’t get off the field on 3rd and 10 and 3rd and 8 because those are obvious passing downs. If the front 4 can’t get pressure then bring a linebacker and actually have him try and sack the QB, and stop sending DB that can’t tackle. Zones can only slow you down or help you against an inaccurate QB or a QB that is hurried because if you play zone you are technically covering no one and that means everyone is open. This is the deal… the Falcons could go on a 15 game win streak, finish the season 15-1 get a first round bye in the playoffs with home field and punch their Super Bowl ticket for INDY. It is possible, but highly unlikely. Before the season started I would have been happy with 10+ wins against this very difficult schedule, but those 10 wins included a win against the Bears… Where are they going to make up that game now? I had them beating the Bears, Tampa Bay (2x), Seattle, Carolina (2x), Detroit, Indy, New Orleans (at home), Tenn., Minn, Houston, and Jacksonville. With losses to Philly, Green Bay and New Orleans (away). 13-3 is still possible, but getting less likely. It must start by shutting down the Eagles at home. This is the Falcons home opener and not the return of Michael Vick to Atlanta. If the Falcons are a Super Bowl contender it is time to start punching teams in the mouth with play and not with words. That is still possible but not like this. Yesterday could have been a fluke and it still can be if you throw the ball down the field and stop expecting other teams to make mistakes before you choose to try and be aggressive. A good boxers punches waiting for the right opening they don’t hold their hands up looking for a shot at the chin because it rarely ever comes until you throw a punch. In the words of the OLD MIKE TYSON PUNCH OUT… “I want to see less Glass Jaw Joe and more Mike Tyson!!!”

Yeah, that was a dud. The Falcons are NOT an “elite” team, they are going to have to claw and scrape their way into the playoffs.

I have never bought into the notion that Matt Ryan will not become an elite QB, or that the Falcons won’t win a Super Bowl with a Mularkey offense, until yesterday. Matt Ryan and the Falcons did the best imitiation of Joey Harrington I’ve seen since . . . Joey Harrington. I truly do not believe Ryan has the arm to throw deep, unless he’s injured and it’s not being disclosed. You get no points in this league for being yellow or wimpy. And, when Ryan did throw to Jones, even though he was well-covered, HE CAUGHT THE BALL! You HAVE to give Jones a chance to make plays. Watch some Michigan-Notre Dame film, Matt.

The offense needs a back with open field elusiveness who can catch a pass. Dumping off to Turner is like throwing to a lamppost.

Please get rid of Owens now and start playing Hayden…seriously…it couldn’t be worse. Also please buy DeCoud some stickem or some new hands.

Overall Defense – Do our defenders ever try to strip the ball from the opposing team. We had some good individual efforts out there Sunday, but I don’t see m(any) of our defensive players trying to punch at a ball to knock it out. If someone is already holding a player up…HIT AT THE BALL!!! Tackling all over the league ain’t what it used to be, but…wow…extend two arms and wrap a guy up will you?!

Kickoffs / Punting – when the punter shows up more and more on the coverage unit as the one making the tackles some chewouts are in order. Are there any veteran punters still available for cheap? Bosher ain’t impressing anyone.

Offense – Granted we had two new linemen in the game versus a VERY stout Chicago defense, but Ryan has to be able to stand up to throw the ball.

Matty (N)ice…, the greatest 6 yard passer in the entire N.F.L. 1st it was get him some weapons that can get deep, 2nd it was the offensive play calling, 3rd it was a weak offensive line. It all adds up to more excuses for a player that many of you trumpet as 1) maybe the best QB in the league, 2) the best player the falcons have ever had. It is now year 4 and the masses are still making excuses for the fair headed wunderkin that couldn’t throw deep if his life depended on it!

“why don’t you give me something worth telling that Vick has actually acomplished for you to call yourself a falcons fan and plan on wearing a vick jersey to the game? ”

He won playoff games and single-handedly kept an otherwise atrocious team respectable while he was here. In 2003 and 2007 we all got to see what that team was without Vick. That’s good enough for me, especially in light of the otherwise abysmal history of the Falcons franchise.

0-5 so far in 2011. Everyone knows the first 8 games of the regular season are just a tune-up for the stretch run. By game 13 (including preseason tune-ups) the Falcon offense and defense will have their “game plan” faces on, and watch out for those “deep balls”!

11 out of 89 teams that went winless in preseason have made it to the playoffs, with none having won a super bowl. Don’t practice winning, don’t win. Swami see 4-12 this year. Even if the offense turns it up a notch, that defense can tackle, can’t cover, the secondary can’t intercept passes (can’t catch), and they back up an extra 20 yards on 3rd and 8, allowing 10-yard slants be an all-day availability.

Explosive? I have made a bigger explosion passing gas. Someone please teach M. Turner some moves. This is the NFL, he can’t run over everybody. Matty Ice maybe a nice guy but he would not be my fantasy QB. Is it the secondary or the defensive schemes because the personnel changes but the results are the same. Hire Deon to teach this guys how to defend the pass and how to intercept passes.

Najeh: Don’t even get into that with him/her. He/she thinks his/her tired & not-very-creative monicker for Vick makes him & his high powered offense coming to town less imposing. Vick has a rocket arm, turns busted plays into big gains, & has Desean Jackson at his disposal. Trust, I’m a Falcons fan for life, but our secondary is indeed looking down the barrel of a loaded gun with Vick & the Eagles offense coming to town. I’m hoping for the best, but I won’t deny the obvious. Their being angry with Vick for what he’s done & already paid for won’t help our secondary on Sunday. The game won’t be played in a courthouse or in the court of public opinion, but on the field. No matter what they think of Vick, it’s what he does on the field that’ll determine whether or not we get what would be a big win. I don’t know, maybe they think a loss at the hand of “CON-Vick” won’t count. Ridiculousness.

Not too hard to see them beating Panthers once, Seahawks, Colts, Titans, Vikings, Jaguars, and either Bucs once or Lions for a 7-9 season. The stupidity of this organization w/ giving away draft picks and not drafting definsively, because they think that they are a Julio Jones away from winning it all,,,, is top notch. Did the GB game not teach the braintrust in this organization anything? Instead of recognizing the glaring weaknesses on D ,, they looked at how Rodgers used a cadre of receivers to pick their secondary apart, and said “that’s what we can do if we get another receiver to complement Roddy” ,,, instead of look at how exposed our secondary is. I think this is also the year that the Matty Ice melts into mediocrity …giving him the new moniker MattyMelt … with just as much cheese as a patty melt.

There’s not going to be any SB with Ryan as QB, nor one with the defense the Falcons have either. To get to the SB, you have to beat either 2 or 3 playoff teams to do it. realitycheck–that’s the unfortunate fact, I believe. For the most part, it takes Super Bowl quality QBs to win the SB & I just don’t see it here. They are going to have to make some BIG adjustments this week or they will lose handily to the Eagles. The “new” Vick is full of confidence. Matt is an old-style, drop back QB and the game these days calls for more of an athlete. Just sayin.
I have hope, however, since I am NOLA-born and a Saints Fan IN ADDITION to a Falcons Fan (my Saints fan friends tell me I can’t be that way but oh well). And when the two teams play? Yes we live in America and you have all the rights that go along with living in this country, but how can you call yourself a fan of these Falcons and root for MV on this upcoming Sunday. Do you not understand that his goal is to beat our team or is that concept lost on you? My wife has Mike on her fantasy team and against the Rams I wanted him to do well because it was her QB, but normally any top NFC team I want to lose because if all the NFC teams lose and the Falcons win it means that the Falcons have a better chance of winning their division and the conference. Does this make sense or is your overpriced jersey clouding your comprehension of this concept. Too often people don’t care about division and conference games until about Thanksgiving, but they all count. So from a fantasy perspective I get you cheering for Mike Vick, and I can even understand you wanting him to have an MVP season, but you still haven’t explained how and why you can be a Falcons fan and cheer for MV this Sunday? Listen, the Bears designed themselves to matchup with the Packers as best they could, they were ready for the Atlanta spread attack, the defense needed to step up their game (Abe and Bierman can’t do it by themselves) DeCoud SHOULD have had 2 interceptions that he just flat out dropped. The offense line wasn’t good, particularly the B-Gap on the right side of the line (between Center and Right Guard for those keeping score at home). When McClure comes back, we should be better on the o-line, seeing as how he makes most of the line calls, and hawley was not ready for that quite yet. Falcon fans, this team will get better, remember, we said a lot of the same things early on last year about the season going down the tube after the Pittsburgh game. Keep the faith my friends, and be at the dome next week to make Vick REALLY feel like it’s an away game.

Matt Ryan lost the game. after his interception it was over. matt ryan was never the same after that. on the first drive, it was like 3rd and 4 yards, he threw first pass to julius jones that was for two yards. almost all his passes were short yards passes, i think i could have thrown. in fact in the middle of the third quarter they noted matt only threw pass over 20 yards. the defense was on the field so much the first half i sure they felt like that had played a whole game at that point. matty ice is more like melty ice. we need a new quarterback.

First and foremost. Dunta Robinson: BUST. I saw him miss several key tackles, particularly on a screen pass when he had outside contain and dove at Forte’s feet and let him get outside for 40 plus yards. 2. Spoon: BUST. Did you see that ridiculous shove on Forte in the 1st quarter? How in the hell could you miss it. Piss poor effort. Piss poor player. 3. Mularky is malarky. Horse hooey. Dooosh bag. Explosive as in wet gunpowder is exposive. How in the @@#R to you call a three yard
pass when you need 10 yards time and time again. Oh, right, 4th and 4 is better than 4th and 10. 4. Can Matt Ryan throw it over 10 yards down field? Well, maybe but apparently they won’t let him. 5. What the F did you draft Julio for? 6. Let’s see. Lost to Greenbay. O and 4 in preseason. Hammered by Bears. Doing my gazintas and cyphering and taking everything else into consideration I can draw the following conclusions A. The Falcons suck big time. B. I delighted that Mr. Blank did not get my season ticket money this year for the first time since ‘85. Much easier drinking in my living room to drown my sorry than at the dome and driving home. Just try, I mean just try a pass over 4 yards. And Michael Turner — the burner — not so much. Jason Snelling. Man, he was, I said was, my boy but he sucked, too. Loved the dropped pass in the second half. Sharrrrp.

As a whole unit we didn’t play up to par. Ryan didn’t have a good game, but the offensive line was being man handled and any quaterback would have been rattled. Poor tacking by the defense and it seemed we had a bunch of confusion in the secondary. That combined with turnovers was just a embarrassment on the day. On the positive side we did move the ball at times and looked good on defense. It’s just one game and we have time to get it together. Everyone in the division lost so it’s time to hang the season up!

This loss had NOTHING to do with the players, and EVERYTHING to do with the PLAY CALLING. Until the falcons decide to move on to page 2 of the playbook, they are going to keep getting beat by avg ( at best ) teams. Not one time did they go to a 4 wide-out set, not 1 time did they go to 5 wide-outs, they went with the ” not so fast Hurry up ” when they did not need to, and when they needed to hurry up, they did’nt, that is NOT THE PLAYERS FAULT, that’s bad coaching. with the offensive talent this team has, it should be in 4 or 5 reciver sets @ least 50% of the time if not more, FORCE the defenses to HAVE to cover EVERYBODY. Look at the last two SUPER BOWL winners, the falcons have just as much talent on offense ( IMO ) as both of those teams, the only differance is how they call plays. The guy from Green Bay might be the best play caller EVER, he calls plays like I call plays, when I’m playing madden, and that A-Hole in N-O is a close 2nd. I live in Phoenix now, if you get a chance, check out how ” Wiz ” calls plays, he’s ( IMO ) in the top 5 of play callers in the NFL. It’s time for Mike Smith and the rest of his staff to move into THIS DECADE with the rest of the NFL. 1 more thing, at what point are the falcons going to understand that whatever they are doing on the defense side of the ball is NOT working? they have had 3 years to fix the defensive back’s situation and they have not even come close. same with the offense, the defense needs to take some steps to join the rest of us here in 2011, this is not the 1980’s, this is not my father’s NFL.

For those who might actually be wishing for the Falcons to fall into Draft lottery territory, think again because:

A) Cleveland owns next year’s Falcons first pick, and
B) seriously, it is VERY unlikely that a single player can make the difference between, say, a 4-12 record and a 12-4 playoff-bound record the next season. In other words, the Falcons’ window of opportunity, like any other NFL franchise, is THIS YEAR. And if such a disaster happened we’d be looking at possibly years of rebuilding and basic misery.

I’m as frustrated as anyone by that awful excuse for a showing yesterday, but I wouldn’t count on anyone at the top, be it Blank, Smith, or Dimitroff, to let it slide and stand pat. They will most definitely be addressing some things in some form or fashion. My chief concern isn’t merely the loss or how lopsided it was; it’s the fact the falcons clearly made NO attempt to make good on their preseason declarations regarding downfield passing for long-yardage gains, and that the defense just flat got carved up by a good but by no means elite QB.

The offensive playcalling falls on Mike Mularkey and/or Matt Ryan, and it’s up to the O-line to give Ryan the time to make good passes. None did anything they were supposed to yesterday. And by now I’m thoroughly convinced that Van Gorder is simply not a capable defensive playcaller; he’s been clearly outclassed against the Bears and during last year’s Green Bay and Philadelphia games to the point of embarrassment. If the rest of the season (or even the next few GAMES) follow yesterday’s pattern, then heads should be rolling, PERIOD, be it coaches and/or bringing players in who WILL get the job done.

Wait…the defense was horrible?

The offense basically gave up 17 of the 30 points scored in the game. They held the Bears to some field goals and a couple of scores(one of which off of Ryans turnover).

Defenses are going to give up plays every once and a while, but our defense ALSO got a handful of sacks, a defesive touchdown and would have forced 2 more turnovers had Thomas D. held on to two gimmies.

The offense gave up more points than it scored. Special teams put the D in bad postitions where it was no way they weren’t going to give up at least a field goal on 2 occasions. ‘Spoon missed a big tackle, sure, jump on that all you want but Matt Ryan was HORRID yesterday and if he had played a mediocre game, the Falcons still could have won.

I am not trying to start anything here, but I am a Packer fan for 50 years, and know the Bears well. You didn’t lose to the Bears offense, you lost to the Bears defense. Cutler is not anywhere near the quarterback Ryan is, but no quarterback plays well with defenders in his face immediately, and the Bears were in your backfield immediately after the snap on almost every play. Everybody else in the league double teams Peppers, but you guys didn’t, at least that I saw. The Bears also took advantage of your defense, which played an exceptionally bad game on the worse field in the league. Say what you want about the Bears, but they always give you their best effort. You pretty much got “out efforted” all day. BTW, if you had tried to plug away at the Bears on the ground, you would have gotten beaten worse than you did. They play way better run defense than they do pass defense, and you have to hold onto the ball, they are masters of knocking the ball out.

Time to fire a shot across the bow of the players. Time for accountability. Bench players that played a bad game. Yes you Hawley, Owens, DeCoud, and Reynolds. Oh, and it may not be a bad idea for Dimitroff to call that secondary coach into the office and give him his walking papers. I think that would give Van Gorder’s ego a little wake up call. Time to show some leadership from the front office, time to hold folks accountable.

Atlanta was jinxed when they built the city in a forests. Forests are good for sleeping and wood. Not for playing football. So they played the game in Chicago. Same thing. The Falcons were looking for the woods and saw they were on a lake. It confused them.

If all of that makes sense, then you’ll understand the Falcons don’t have a change in hell of playing in the Super Bowl this season. Playoffs? Back to the woods boys.

I’ve always questioned the philosophy of putting no emphasis on winning in pre-season games. With the talent so evenly divided in the NFL, developing a winning attitude has to be very important, even in practice games. Technically that is 6 straight loses including pre-season. We need a new offensive coordinator. The birds are too obvious! We need a new defensive coordinator! I wont through Coach Smith under the bus yet, but his days should be numbered also. I think this team went as far as it could, with this staff. It is similar to the Hawks….we wanted Woody gone and Mike has done no more than Woodson. Matt Ryan has stalled in this offense…

The Falcons are very boring to watch. Matt Ryan dumps off short passes and never goes deep, we have a very slow backfield, we seem to think we can run over the other team when we can’t. I understand why the owner, the coaches and players want to stay positive but the team has lost 5 games in a row playing very, very conservatively. Why! Go out play without being afraid. If you can’t score 30+ points in the league you will probably get beat! A great coach once said “fear makes cowards of us all.” Maybe that slogan should be in the Falcon’s locker room….what a preformance….open up the offense and PLAY football.

Now, I did a little research, and this is Vicks 10 year. Lets examine his incredible, big game winning record.

2002 9-7 Won the WC game in Green Bay, lost division playoff to Eagles.
2003 Broken Leg
2004 11-5-1, Bounced division playoff to Seattle
2005 8-8
2006 7-9
2007-08 out of Football
2009 Backup
2010 10-6, Bounced in 1st round of Division Series

Now, am I mistaken, but was Vicks largest accomplishment a WC victory in 2001. Seem like a loser to me.

Stat Man

September 12th, 2011
8:24 pm

Bottom line, in 10 years, Vick has been one an done twice, and won a measly WC game before getting bounced by the Eagles, he has never even sniffed a league championship game.

Why are we even talking about Ryans failures in the playoffs as though Vick has accomplished something? They both have been playoff failures, but since Vick has been in the leagure 3x as long, well, his is 3x the failure…..stats don’t lie, but some people can’t handle the truth.

Correction, Eagles were bounced in the 1st round of the WC round in 2010. So, he and Matty Ice have played in the exact same number of division playoff rounds, 1. Why all the hype? Where is the fire in these guys? Too often they’ve looked like this. Even through their success last year in 4 or 5 of the wins they looked lack luster, but still came out with a win some how. Did Harvey Dahl take the heart and soul of this squad with him.

And when ever players are asked about leaders on the team, they are quick to point to Matt Ryan. That is good, a quarterback should be. What about the other pro bowlers..? Roddy White, John Abraham, Tyson Clabo, Tony Gonzalez, Michael Turner, Brent Grimes… What are these guys doing when the team is mucking it up like they were. Yeah Right! You are an idiot. It is Matt Ryan’s fault since he is running scared. He does not step up in the pocket. He is not decisive. He runs backwards right into the hands of defensive ends. I feel sorry for our offensive tackles. He never threw once to the end zone although the Falcons were in the red zone twice. There is no explosiveness and if I was Arthur Blank and the owner I will tell Mike Smith that TD provided you with the players……….put the team in the posiiton to win and be agressive on both sides of the ball. If not you and the two coordinators are gone. Fit the players to their strengths and don’t fit the players to convservative chicken sh*t offensive and defensive schemes. We have two studs for wide receivers and we don’t throw deep to them and let them fight for the ball. Unvelievable. I am too young to remember them, but thinking more recently, Chad Pennington is not a bad comparison. Pennington was deadly accurate (the most accurate passer of all time as a matter of fact) and made the right reads nearly all the time, but he couldn’t make plays when the play broke down and couldn’t make plays down the field, which kept him from ever being elite.

Of course, he did manage to win two playoff games in his first three seasons as a starter…

FAlcons24

September 13th, 2011
6:24 am

It is really too early to do a fair assessment of any team. All we know is that they looked awful in every phase of the game. Matt Ryan had 2 crucial turnovers, along with Michael Turner that were drive stoppers (self-induced). Michael Turner is probably the only RB in the NFL that break for a 53 yard gainer in the open field and cannot score. The receiver are not running past people as of the first week. Give Ryan a good window. Weems refused to field any punts as if he is still in preseason. Matt Boshers 38 yard punt average will not cut it in the NFL.Bad angles and tackling was a big problem. Work on the basics sometimes and we are not a zone defense. The LB’s are not dropping back deep enough in coverage, but it looks like the secondary is not doing their job. All of the passes were underneath or in the flats were the LB should have been. Decoud and Moore need to hit harder and set a tone for the secondary. They are coming up and arm tackling. I thought a nickel back locate the receiver in a zone and get there. Chris Owens went to the flats and the receiver turned inside. I believe once we get some new blood(Hayden at nickel and Sanders) on defense we will be okay. When you stay onthe field that long you are not going to beat anyone. It is hard to blame the defense when your offense give up 3 turnover and all three led to scores. They did not give up explosive plays with the exception of Matt Forte screen pass. BVG and MM need to be more game driven rather than being very methodical in their approach. Play to the strengths of how the game is flowing. We will be fine, because we have 15 regular season games left.

This is Falcons owner Art Blank here and I’m telling you that if you think I’m spending my billions on a bunch of choir boys, I’ve got some beachfront property in Montana that I want to sell you. I won’t be putting up with this Sugar, Honey, Ice, and Tea for long, so fret not . . . I’m gonna give Matt Ryan (notice I didn’t say Matty Ice) one more year (this year) and then I’m gonna put DJ Shockley on speed dial. Oh yea, and BTW, don’t think I don’t have my eyes on Michigan’s Dennard Robinson because I do . . . I know that we can’t draft high enough to get Stanford’s Andrew Luck, but that’s ok because Robinson is MV7 with dreadlocks . . . thank you, good day, and keep shopping at Home Depot so I can continue to receive dividends . . . Shalom . . .

Six straight losses is enough data to evaluate this squad of pretenders along with the coaching staff..

Contrary to popular belief(or at least its the bull their selling you and your eating it) the four preseason games do count…The same mistakes your making as a player and coach will continue to manifest itself as it did in Chicago…Yep they count..Greenbay loss + 5= 0-6!!! Soon to be 0-7 on Sunday night..It will be a disaster……….

Mr Blank, I suggest you just may want to huddle up in your palace, because if you come down to the Dome you will probably get sick to your stomach!

Good luck genius!

“Of course, he did manage to win two playoff games in his first three seasons as a starter…”

And that is why I did not include him in my comparisons… Now, if he continues to regress in some areas (turnovers in key situations), I’ll add the names Greg Landry (early 70’s Lions QB) and Jim Hart (early 70’s Cardinals QB). If he ever wins a playoff game, then he gets into the class with John Brodie, Milt Plum, and Norm Snead.

the saints will easily win the division and beat green bay for the nfc title—bet the house. Atlanta may not even make the playoffs without big changes.

I love the title “Explosive Falcons just opened the season with a dud”. The Explosive Falcons are a pathetic team of “wanna-bes” (Ryan), “prima-donnas” (white, jenkins, julio jones), and no-talent bums. THE FALSONS OPENED THE SEASON WITH A DUD AND WILL FINISH THE SEASON AT 1-15. Erase them from your memory banks.
