Georgia gets hammered and doubts about Richt grow

The looks on the faces of Georgia coach Mark Richt and defensive assistants Todd Grantham (center) and Rodney Garner (left) say it all Saturday night. (Brant Sanderlin/AJC)

(UPDATED: 12:10 a.m.)

This is when you start struggling to remember the good times. This is when a Georgia fan thinks back to an early seven-year span under Mark Richt when Georgia went 24-11 against ranked opponents and wonders, “Wait, did that really happen? Or was it those brownies I ate?”

If it wasn’t bad enough that the Bulldogs were underdogs (get used to that) in their season opener and a relative home game Saturday to a school from Idaho — something difficult for so many to swallow — the team’s response made all past criticism seem understated. With eight months to prepare since a humiliating effort against Central Florida in the Liberty Bowl, Georgia couldn’t give Boise State any tougher of a game than it usually receives from Wyoming.

Save some trickeration — an 80-yard touchdown run by Brandon Boykin that gave the Dogs an early 7-0 lead — it was Boise State’s night. It was Boise State’s celebration. It was Boise State that played smart and physical, the kind of performance that gets teams into BCS bowls. Remember BCS bowls?

Both teams made loud statements. Georgia just made the wrong one. Following that Boykin touchdown, the Bulldogs saw their opponents real off 28 straight points. Boise State went on to win 35-21, and it didn’t even feel that close.

Georgia’s defense looked as bad in its second season under Todd Grantham as it did in the first. The Boise State offensive line dominated. Quarterback Kellen Moore at times seemed to toy with defenders.

If only the Dogs had more than eight months to prepare.

If only they had completely revamped their strength and conditioning program.

Oh, wait a minute …

Since going 24-11 against ranked teams, Richt is 2-9. That’s more than a trend. The next ranked opponent also is the first SEC opponent: South Carolina, next week in Athens. The level of desperation just went up.

Richt must realize that. He just didn’t show it after the game. In fact, what he showed was somewhat alarming. After some standard introductory comments — “They were better than we were. We’ve got a lot of work to do before next week. But we know everybody is 0-0 in league play” — Richt actually laughed. Yes, laughed. He turned to Atlanta Journal-Constitution reporter Chip Towers, who had been pestering Richt all week about the status of safety Bacarri Rambo, laughed and said that Rambo would not be suspended for the South Carolina game. Richt had been playing coy with the media, but Rambo was held out Saturday as expected for an unspecified violation of team rules.

Laughter may be a defensive mechanism for Richt. But his team just got whacked with a 2 x 4 in the season opener. Is laughing in the post-game new conference really a good idea?

Richt has been getting a lot of heat. He should. Fact is, Georgia’s slide hasn’t been merely about the ascension of Alabama and Florida in the SEC. In the last two years alone, the Dogs have lost games to Oklahoma State, LSU, Tennessee, Kentucky, South Carolina, Arkansas, Mississippi State, Colorado, Auburn and Central Florida. How long ago was it when you could not have imagined Georgia losing to many of those teams?

The Dogs suffered borderline humiliation on their first possession. They had a false start penalty before the first snap. They had a false start three plays later. They were whistled for delay of game before punting. Before the first quarter was over, the Dogs also were called for an illegal formation for having five players in the backfield (the penalty was declined) and they burned a timeout before a Boise State punt for having only 10 players on the field.

This is why having the biggest, strongest and fastest players sometimes doesn’t matter.

Boykin’s touchdown would be the Dogs’ only score of the first half and it comprised more than half of the team’s yardage (151). The Dogs totaled 71 yards in the other 29 plays.

Georgia’s defense looked strong for the first few Boise State series. But the Broncos appeared to make some adjustments in pass protection and Moore starting find holes in the zone. He moved the offense well in three of BSU’s last four possessions in the half, two resulting in touchdowns (the other, an interception by Branden Smith).

Boise State’s offensive line took over in the second quarter. Moore wasn’t sacked all game and completed 28 of 34 passes, three for touchdowns. He could’ve had a Baracalounger in the backfield to recline before some of his throws. At the outset of the third quarter, Georgia looked lost and overmatched on defense. Moore went 7-for-7 for 69 yards on Boise State’s first possession of the half. Then on second down from the Dogs’ 7, running back Doug Martin faked Smith into oblivion and danced into the end zone for a 21-7 lead.

It wasn’t over. But it was over. Once Boise State’s offense got going, Georgia couldn’t stop it.

The slide continues. It’s uncertain if Richt can stop that, either.

We gave RICHT the job because of his great success as offensive coordinator at Florida State and he practically gives the keys to his car away to Mike BoBo who is going to ultimately get him fired. Richt if your going to lose your job atleast go out calling the plays again.

And, the who cares attitude. They act just like Richt does on the sideline. He looks like is on sleeping pills. Mark Richt started by winning the coin toss. Boise State to have jitters on the road facing The Bulldog nation, out in style. We jammed MARTA and seemed to be a quarter million to their 250 fans. When we got off at the 5-Points and walked over to the Westbound to the Georgia Dome, it was hot. The tailgating seemed lackluster, but I saw some Boise State fans tailgating too. We left and went to CNN. Food Court. Didn’t find anything of interest, except for a T-Shirt I bought which I guess will never see the light of day, Bust Boise. The graphics were not that great on the front and the words on the back were poor. The graphics were good on the back, but it reads And the Smurf Turf Lovin’ Yahoos they brought with ‘em. Smack Talkin’ The Talk. $20 wasted.

Mismanagement of the coin toss, when we should have gone on Defense and should have gone directly after Kellen Moore. Trust me when I tell you that with TCU losing too, that every single Boise State opponent will do nothing but rush the quarterback all season long. Given that we saw that he was taking us apart, we still never mounted any sack, or anything close to one of him.

Brandon Boykin, how many times for how many years have I told you that he will play running back in the NFL ?

Media Guide. What good does it do to make copy of the media guide with the players’ numbers, only to see on every play you want to know who that guy was, that cannot tell any of the players ? Worthless.

Jarvis Jackson went after Kellen Moore once, and Branden Smith got the pick as a result. Did the coaching staff, figure that out either ? No. We are clueless.

2009 we beat what ended up # 13 Georgia tek.

Go ahead. Tell me who else we have beat ?

I’ll wait while you squirm in your seat on that one. Oh, the Boise State game doesn’t matter. Forget that the entire SEC is off and running, except for Ole Miss we all knew would struggle anyway.

We could have jumped off to such a great start. Boise State was doing absolutely nothing, jitters, strength, whatever, they were going nowhere. But, Georgia, we go out there and have 4 penalties on the 1st four snaps. This offense is abysmal. Please tell me again how great little Aaron Murray is. How many YARDS he threw for. His miserable little run there for all of what ? 2 yards, less than 2 yards. Dual threat. 6 sacks. Sitting back there without a care in the world. 28 unanswered consecutive points. Tell me again, how the Defense is to blame for that, as you tried to float past me in 2008 ?

Loss number 9 of the last 11 games Mark Richt’s “coaching staff” has put up, based upon rankings at game time vs Top 10 opponents.

Did we consider putting another quarterback in for 1 play ? No, they did. Several times. We did not. Again. As EVERY year.

Secondary. What secondary ?

WR. What WR ?

RB. What RB. Brandon Boykin ? I told you so. And, 4.43 is not fast folks.

OL ? What OL.

Uni. Oh, you mean the CLOWN SUITS Mark Richt said the players love ?

FB ? What fullback ?

7-28. You have got to be kidding me that that is not mismanagement of the talent here at UGA. 7-28.

Brandon Boykin tweet to Chris Petersen and Mark Richt tells him, that’s ok Brandon, just have to back it up, now. Oh, no. We were # 85 in kick-off returns last season and we are # 52 this morning, this season. And, this is what we do pre-game ? Have the head coach tell the player that he will have to back it up now.

Mismanagement of the talent around here.

# 72 in the nation at making 1st downs all last season.

You see any 1st Downs out there tonight ?

When did you leave the game ?

Oh, so Notre Dame lost. Auburn came back. LSU doubled up Oregon, even without their QB because they have a # 2 QB. Novel idea. None of any of that matters. It’s like watching Little League when your team gets knocked out of the tournament. Oh, tell me please how to be a great and supportive fan of this crappy football program ?

If not to say, here is our issue.

Mark Richt should never ever ever be allowed to ever hire or fire another coach in his lifetime. Curse at us again Mark Richt that you know what you are going and Mike Bobo is staying, just exactly as you told us about Willie Martinez. No different.

This week, now, where is Brandon Pledger, we put Mark Richt’s record vs The SEC East on the line. You remember ? The DOWN division called The SEC East. Over the next Saturday, last 6 seasons then that night, Mark Richt will not have a winning record vs the DOWN division that is The SEC East, if he cannot win against South Carolina, who should have lost to East Carolina.

We’re the # 7 team in The SEC. We have been. We are. We continue.

13 Losses the last 27 games. And, it’s not just the losses, it’s the yahoos who run the blogs, who post on the blogs, who say oh please do not say anything that is not supportive. Please don’t point out what mismanagement really is.

Aaron Murray threw for x yards. Mark Richt has won x games. We have the Dream Team. We will beat Florida. Just wait until next year.

That is the quarterback number 8 who had a better game, head-to-head than the “Best Quarterback in The SEC.” He is now 6-8.

Desperation time will come. Mark Richt has no answers. None. His coaching staff will cost him his job. On his next job, instead of college roommates and praying buddies, he will actually never be allowed to hire the 1st coach.

I am a Georgia Bulldogs’ Football Program, fan. I am not a Mark Richt fan. I love the guy. He is a great man. Head Coach in college football, he is not. His decisions, such as running off 26 players who should have played vs Boise State, who did not, continue.

Why not 1 sack of Kellen Moore ? Aaron Murray was sacked 6 times, again.

We can still Win The SEC Championship.

You are so full of it. You are a Bible Thumper who is only a Mark Richt fan. Nothing else. Just a Mark Richt fan. No matter how witless his decisions.

Dawg fans, be calm. It’s only one game and against a team – and QB – that is really, really good. Those Broncs will beat most everyone this year and could hold their own against many NFL teams. And I’m sincere about this – no heckling, no sarcasm.
Beat SC next week at home and most is forgotten about this.
I still want my Bees to clobber you in November, but keep your chin-straps tight and and your spirits up.
After the entire season, take stock and if house-cleaning is warranted, do it. My guess is UGA will be in contention for SEC East.

Boise States 18 Starters are 5th year Seniors now thats a tremendous advantage. Offensive Line- Seemed to me that they got manhandled by BS front 4 and #71 got 2 penalties that were severe.

Yeah, yeah so we got beat ! But so did alot of other schools that was suppose to beat those Div. 2A schools as well.

Everyone one of you have a right to bash the dawgs because i know you care and ofcourse there are others who arent fans.

Defense- I thought Georgia played better and knew their assignments compared to last years 1st game but they got very tired with BS no huddle and ofcourse BS Q.B. is or should be in the Heisman race.

Im mean lets look at this…… BS returning 18 Seniors w/15 of those 5th Year Seniors, then they were ranked #2 in Defense and #2 in Offense last year with a possible Heisman.

Georgia played with heart and character and its really hard to say how they will turn out this year because everyones alittle rusty and they have got to get their timing down, i mean look around at all the other games and this proves my point.

Boise State could have beat any NCAA team yesterday. There are alot of adjustments to be made before next weeks game against S. Carolina and no doubt they are a better team than last years Conference Champs.

Eventhough Richt is on the bubble both Offense and Defense have alot more work to do and as painful as it may seem, we’re gonna get better and i saw alot of good things from certain players that gives me hope that we can compete.

Im not down on anyone thats bashing Georgia and now were gonna face another team that does alot of running than passing with a great running back Lattimore. We wont really know how Georgia is gonna fair this season til after the 4th game.

Though i really dont like Bobo i thought he called a fair game opposed to other games and i’d give him a C- but in reality not many teams could have pushed Boise State down the field and i think their defense
only allowed 9 pts a game last year.

This is just a game and we’re all Americans here who love the sport and its fun to voice our opinions and i would ask people to not get down on individuals who get on here and bash the Dawgs because to me they care as much as we do.

I watched the replay of the Miss St, SC and Ark games 4 times each. Had Ga ran the ball more in those games the outcome would of been different. The defense played better than what the record indicate.
If Crowell gets 20 to 25 carries a game, I believe we will go undefeated. If Murray pass on 1st and 2nd downs like he did last season, I think they will lose 2 games. The SEC won 5 straight NC because those teams had a good running game and a dominate defense.

How did that undeated prediction work out for you tony?
___________________________________________________________________________

#1 I can assure you, I’m no redneck. #2 Crowell did not get 20-25 carries……..that means they will not go undefeated. #3 In this game Murray passed on 1st and 2nd down like last season so therefore I believe they will lose 2 games this season.

LSU smashed the Ducks because they ran the football down their throats. LSU had 47 rushing attempts to the dawg’s 23 attempts.

Like I stated in my Aug 27th post, the sec won 5 straight NC because those teams had a good run offense.

Great comment Mike, I hope its true. I’ve supported CMR…….That was embarrassing loss. UGA was not prepared for that game. They were out coached. I’ve never seen UGA look this bad. A. Murray seemed to regress last night. He took some really bad sacks. Poor play calling on 1st and 2nd downs contributed to some of the six sacks. Other times he failed to recognize the blitz, and often he simply held on too long. I hope Mike is right, but i’m thinking like Thomas Brown.

Thank you, Rmikl. I am truly embarrassed by some of the Tech posts here. A lack of class shows most when one thinks his adversary is down.
I’m betting the team isn’t that ‘down’ – they know they played one of the best teams in the land – and lost.
Hopefully, these guys calling themselves ‘Buzz’-this and ‘Tech’-that didn’t go to Tech and are just Monday-Friday losers who must feel big at the expense of others’ being small.

I could care less if you don’t want the RICHT-0-FILES to say that The entire Bulldog Nation are not fans of Mark Richt’s “coaching staff.”

Further, RMikeI58, sir, the defense had the wrong game plan. And, made no adjustment. We should have gone after sacks of Kellen Moore after we won the coin toss. Not put this miserable offense on the field, and then never make the adjustment that what we were doing, giving up 28 consecutive, unanswered, points, was not working – and, that, we must sack Kellen Moore. We had success doing that.

As for your stats vs all 12 teams Boise State plays this entire season, none are ranked and none will end up ranked. Are you seriously sitting there trying to tell me of all people that # 2 Alabama and # 3 LSU would not have sacked Kellen Moore, and run the football outside – especially after we put our 1 running back in and saw his speed outside ?

I really enjoy reading the postings on here but rarely post any myself. After last nights game i have to say that I was really impressed with Boise St. If they can stay healthy I think they can go real far. Striking differences between these two teams. Boise St. methodically execute their plays. They block well. They tackle well. They are disciplined. Unfortunatelly i saw few if any bright spots for the Dawgs. The offensive line look like under-acheivers again. The defense look like they are lost….again. The receivers dropping passes like they are on crack…again. One bone-headed mistake snowballing into a series of bone-headed mistakes…again.

Mark Richt should try to learn a few things from Boise St. Its not all about size and speed.

Well, all my questions were answered…..

Report Card:

Defense: F+…….I think we had an interception…..
Offense: F………Yes, it was offensive to have to watch that crap
Coaching:F………Maybe this is not Richt’s true calling
Uniforms: F-……..I don’t think anymore needs to be said about the “Power Rangers” garb.
Execution: A……..Yes, I’m in favor of that
Intangibles: A+….Providing Greg McGarity has Kirby Smart on speed dial, and makes the call.

Overview: We would have been a winner @ Dragon-Con with our uniforms. We maybe could have won the game, had we been playing someone other than BSU (maybe the Charlotte Women’s Nursing and Midwives Academy), but I hear they have a hellava kicking game. We could have won, if we had a different coaching philosophy, say that of Elmer Fudd (his couldn’t be any worse than ours is). UGA was a “dream team”, as they were asleep all night.

Perhaps Georgia needs to consider a two-qb system like SC…Christian LeMay may have been the kind of running threat that Boise wasn’t prepared but, then again, I can’t think of Bobo and CMR doing anything that requires imagination. CMR is clearly out of this league; Richt was boosted in the early years by little more than luck and good assistant coaches (Van Gorder). He is finished as far as I’m concerned. I don’t care if he runs the table the rest of the way (any bets on that happening) I’m done with the stinking team this year and would love to see a “void out” where no one shows up between the hedges when they meet SC.

Fellow Tech fans: keep in mind that the lone win against a ranked opponent the last two years was against Tech year before last.

Let’s see the Jackets actually beat them before we start giving them a hard time.

Besides, giving them a hard time about this just reminds then that they have beaten Tech the last two years and that there is something to feel good about.

Let’s just sit back and watch. If, at the end of the season, Tech has beaten them, then we can brag. In the mean time, let’s just silently enjoy their pain.

Trending downware. Do you think? CMR and his whole staff need to go. After last season and a loss to Central Florida in a bowl game this is what we got after an offseason of changes. The only thing that was different was the uniforms which I did not like either. Every bit of this is on CMR. Your players remain undisciplined. Why? Your offensive line is massive but cannot run block or pass block. Why? Your defense is supppose to be much improved in their second year in the 3-4 scheme but the DC much like Matrinez seems unable to make adjustments to take away what your opponent is doing to you over and over again or generate a fierce pass rush to help your secondary. Kellen Moore hardly broke a sweat. On offense your receivers dropping passes. Murray overthrowing wide open receivers, holding the ball too long, and time and again forcing the ball into tight spots. No imagination at all on offense short of one run by your starting cornerback on a reverse that was more athletic talent than any scheme. What did this coaching staff do since we last saw them last season? Forget about returning to national relevance because UGA is not even relevant in the south. No one respects UGA. No one fears UGA. CMR is responsible. He hired this coaching staff and the efforts of UGA for years now has been substandard. The AD should have bit the bullet and made the change last year but hope is eternal and this is like a bad episode ot the Twilight Zone where we keep waking up to the same bad results game after game and year after year.

Time for a reality check from a non Bulldog fan:

1. Boise State returned 25 seniors from an excellent 2010 team! I do not care how many 5 star recruits you sign….good players with experience trump great players with no experience.

2. One of Georgia’s weak spots in the last couple of years has been offensive line. The biggest Georgia homer on talk radio, Buck Belue, has been saying for months that the offensive line is a major area of concern. Georgia demonstrated last night what Belue has been saying for months…size does not always matter…talent and depth matter.

3. Another area of concern for Georgia as stated during last nights telecast….Georgia is very thin at the inside linebacker spots. Anyone with half a football brain knows that THE key to a 3 – 4 scheme is linebacker play. The big boys up front keep the linebackers “clean” to allow them to make plays. Ogletree went down early and….I believe….another inside linebacker was in and out of the game with injuries.

4. Georgia lost a ton of experience last year…both offensively and defensively…..this was most apparent at running back. Crowell will be a great back if he continues to work hard and keeps his nose clean. Presently, he is a freshman football player with NO experience and a ton of talent! In Georgia’s offensive scheme, your tailback has to know who…and how to block in the passing game. That is why he will split duty for the next couple of weeks.

5. Most experts have been predicting Georgia to be a 9-3 to 10-2 team this year…I thought that 10-2 was unrealistic for the reasons stated above….9-3 is a realistic goal…EMPHASIZE realistic!…10-2 or the ridiculous notion of National Champion has always been for the delusional!!! Georgia will have to keep key position mentioned above healthy to have a chance at 9-3. I believe 8-4 is a better bet. Based on the first weeks results I think that you will be favored to beat everyone on the schedule with the exception of South Carolina, Mississippi State, possibly Florida and Tennessee. I believe that you will win at least 1 of the 4 games. The rest of the schedule you should handle…I include in that list my beloved Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets….you see….I am an objective Yellow Jacket fan!

And now you know the rest of the story…. :-)
