Michael Vick’s new contract will benefit Falcons’ pockets

Michael Vick: Finally out of debt.

Michael Vick: He's finally out of debt.

Arthur Blank: He'll get back $7.5 million, maybe more.

Arthur Blank: He'll get $7.5 million, maybe more.

So if I read this correctly, Michael Vick just helped Arthur Blank move $7.5 million closer to getting a new stadium.

Vick’s new reported six-year, $100 million contract with the Philadelphia Eagles means he should be able to clear all of the creditors listed in his original bankruptcy, which totaled about $20 million.

Not surprisingly, the biggest creditor was the Falcons. They are owed $7.5 million from his signing bonus after he defaulted on his contract. Something about dog fighting and prison. It’s all a blur now.

Our D. Orlando Ledbetter reported back in April of 2009 that Vick and the Falcons had reached a settlement on the salary cap refund, so that part of the story is not news. But this could be: Via ProFootballTalk.com, the Falcons will seek and could receive salary cap credits, which would come as Vick returns the money.

Greg Aiello, the NFL’s vice president of public relations, told Pro Football Talk via email “that such matters are reviewed on a case-by-case basis, and that the question of whether the Falcons will receive cap credits is currently under review,” according to the website.

Theoretically, getting salary cap credits could give the Falcons’ a competitive advantage over other teams, albeit slight. At the very least, Blank can stash the $7.5 million in his building fund.

So does this mean even Falcons’ fans and Vick haters can acknowledge something good has come out of his comeback?

Still hard to imagine that we didn’t get any picks out of that. We let the guy go, but with all that talent still should’ve gotten something in return, except for our own peace of mind. Glad he’s gone and doing well and hope he makes the Hall ‘o Fame one day cause he certainly made that Hall ‘o Shame. As much as I hate Vick, he was a Falcon, like MeAngelo and Me-on Deon, My Time. Love them all. But this is a team we got here. Ryan is King. Our Hope.

Don’t use the term “Vick-haters”. Michael Vick disappointed the fans of Atlanta for sure. Many fans hated what he had done. Many people didn’t approve of Vick’s behavior. But before all that, Vick owned Atlanta. He was the superstar of all superstars to this City and people wanted nothing but his success.

Forward to today. I think the vast majority of people realize that everything has worked out for everyone for the most part. The Falcons have moved in a new direction with Smith, Dimitroff, and Ryan. Vick served his time and became a better man for it. Remember, he was literally just a kid when he was thrust into the limelight of Atlanta. Vick has grown up and is on the right path. The Eagles have heavily invested in Vick and helped him off the field in terms of guidance.

I think once Arthur Blank, to whom Vick owes a great deal, is made whole, the circle will be complete.

Any salary cap advantage will indeed by “slight,” at best. As a long-time Falcons fan, when the former #7 lied to Arthur Blank, the city of Atlanta and Falcons fans everywhere, then went to prison, I was no longer concerned with his actions. I honestly couldn’t care less who he plays for or how much money he’s making.

The really cool thing is that Vick will never ever be as great a Quarterback as Matt Ryan, no matter how you measure it. We ATL fans pinned our hopes and dreams on this guy, and how cool is it to have a QB that could be better than all of them. And if he had never had done wrong, we would have never known. Perhaps our guy would have been up North, or down South, or somewhere else. But no, he was brought to Falcon country, a land long tainted by mediocrity and talent-gone-wrong, now we got our precious jewel, Blank knows it and so does TD, that’s why they’re building around it and why Peter King says SuperBowl baby, something that was a pipe dream with the running man, the dog-killer-turned-pride-of-philly. Good luck to you boy. We got our joy.

Not so quick with the assessment this new contract will benefit the Falcons in terms of recouping actual cash on hand. I believe, earlier this year, the Falcons sold their claim in the bankruptcy court for an undisclosed amount to an investment firm. Generally, these investment firms pay a percentage of the debt to the debt holder in exchange for the right to collect the full debt. If that is correct, then the Falcons have already all the money to which they would have been entitled under the bankruptcy settlement. The actual money would be paid to the investment firm which bought the debt. So, as a Falcon fan, we can only hope there is some salary cap benefit derived in the future.

This article indicates the ruling said the Falcons could only recover 3.75 million of the bonus, and that was the cap figure to be returned when he paid. Was there other salary and cap issues outstanding?

Couple points:
1. Those who say if only Coach Smith or if Dan Reeves were still his coach instead of Jim Mora, MV was doing the dog thing either before he entered the NFL or immediately after. (jim mora didn’t help, but it wasn’t because of him)

2. I agree that everyone should get a second chance, Michael Vick included. He paid his time for the dog fighting wring… my problem as a Falcons fan with MV is what he did to the Atlanta Falcons franchise, Aurthur Blank and the entire organization. He put them in a position to fall to the depths of professional sports would never see before or after. It was only by the grace of god that the Falcons were able to draft Matt Ryan and rebound as fast as they did. It was NOTHING Michael Vick did or the league did to help that process.

Michael Vick didn’t give one rats behind about the organization or the fans for the affects his actions had. THAT is the biggest problem of all and what most people dismiss and why i will never root for that man again.

This team went to the SB without “your guy” running the team. Blank was in the process of trying to erase the “joke” label when “your guy” temporarily demolished all the franchise’s hard-fought gains, returning us to “joke status” again for awhile. Bull – Vick, after losing all his money and going to prison, has finally become the QB he was supposed to be when the Falcons drafted him.

And he had the nerve to come out and blame the Falcon’s coaching staff for this?

He finally is reviewing game film and listening to coaches – why? Because he has no choice.

He admitted that in Atlanta he was the last in the building before practice and first out the door after. His game film? He admitted he did nothing with it – he admitted that when he went home, he smoked dope with his buddies that were all living in his house, and plaid video games – oh yeah, and pursued his other passion.

But he didn’t spend any time learning the game or trying to better himself as a quarterback – and now he credits the Eagles for that change?

No Mike, you made that change because you were a penniless convict when the Eagles signed you – or rather, when Roger Goodell pushed you to Philadelphia.

Mike Vick still hasn’t accepted responsibility for his lack of development in Atlanta. He’s is still blaming Jim Mora.

This is a BIG beat by the Eagles. I do not see MV7 having close to the year he had last year. Teams now remember his weaknesses and are going to blitz the hell out of him from his left side. I doubt he will play a total of 10 games this year. At least all his bills will be paid off now, $20m. If he gets the whole $100m, $10m goes to his agent. 50% to taxes ($50m), $20m to creditors. That leaves him $20m. Not bad for a convicted felon.

Najeh, that is based on the 2 preseason games as their offensive line sux. Go back and watch the games. Go to philly.com and read what the Eagle fans are saying. They are scared that Vick will be running because he has too. Also, his last 3-4 games last year were not very good.

“And he had the nerve to come out and blame the Falcon’s coaching staff for this?”

Oh for the love of God. Let’s see how well Matt Ryan — or any other quarterback for that matter — does if he has to playfake a shotgun draw before every pass, long after the defense has stopped falling for it. Let’s see how well they do if they see seven rushers at the line with five people in to block and their coaches don’t let them audible to a different play. Let’s see how well they do if every other playcall asks for them to naked bootleg away from their protection. Posts like this make me feel sad that I have been preaching the truth about Jim Moron and company on these blogs for seven years and people still haven’t got the message.

Jim Moron, Greg Knapp and Ed Donatell are all out of football. Donatell’s last defensive coordinator job was with the University of Washington when they not so coincidentally went winless. Knapp’s last offensive coordinator job was with the Raiders when he oversaw the “development” of JaMarcus Russell; he left after that to be Matt Schaub’s QB coach and oversaw Schaub’s completion percentage fall 4 percentage points. Moron had one more coaching job in the NFL as the Seahawks’ coach, leading them to a 5-11 record in football’s worst division, and after he was replaced by a guy who hadn’t coached in the NFL in over 10 years the Seahawks made the playoffs and upset the defending champs.

That three-headed monster not only wrecked the start of Vick’s career; they also held Roddy White’s development back by White’s own admission. In fact, name one player who got better under their watch. I bet you can’t. They are not only the worst coaching staff the Falcons have had in my lifetime; they might be the worst coaches Atlanta has had, period. Vick without them is an MVP candidate. They, without Vick, are NOTHING.

Never forget who or WHAT Michael Vick is….. He willfully participated in the torture and killing of dogs by hanging them and drowning them. THIS IS WHAT SERIAL KILLERS DO. There is no “cultural” justification for those actions. Not even the strongest supporters of dog fighting would say those actions are part of their “culture.”

“that is based on the 2 preseason games as their offensive line sux. Go back and watch the games. ”

Been watching all their preseason games, and while the right side of their offensive line does suck, missing their two best possession receivers has hurt more. I’ll be concerned if they are still sputtering after Maclin and Smith get healthy. Their line wasn’t that great last year either, especially on Vick’s blind side.

“Go to philly.com and read what the Eagle fans are saying. ”

I’ve been checking what Eagles fans have been saying since Vick got there, and one thing that consistently shows up is that they are insanely paranoid. I don’t put any stock in what they say.

“Also, his last 3-4 games last year were not very good.”

The Vikings game was awful. Other than that, he wasn’t “bad” in any of them. Not living up to the insane standard he set over the first seven games last year doesn’t constitute “bad”. They scored 26, 30, 34, and 38 points in each of the last four games before that Minnesota game, and they were a couple of shanked gimme field goals by Akers away from beating the Packers.

Right now the eagles are paper champions; too bad that means nothing on the real gridiron. I don’t see them as a title favorite, but they aren’t near as bad as that preseason game. They have so many new members on their team and a new O-line coach. Vick didn’t have his weapons in Desean Jackson and Vernon Macklin. Plus Jackson hasn’t been himself because of his contract situation. But they will get better as the season goes. And if that offensive line can keep Vick upright, I see them winning 11 games.

FACT – Falcons were a joke before Mike Vick came to town and gave us a reason to watch. Despite that he was young and DUMB when he was in Atlanta. He was given everything on a silver platter and even had the owner in his corner. He didn’t work for anything and didn’t do what he needed to keep getting better. He thought he was untouchable and when his dirt caught up with him the world came crashing down on him. Now he has payed restitution and made efforts to better himself as a player and a man. He statistically had the best season of his career; including one of the greatest individual performances (which he won’t come near again) of all time. I’m happy for him being able to turn his life around. And when the Falcons beat them down I’ll still be happy!!

I just don’t see how a fan base can be so mad at someone who brought a laughing stock of a franchise some excitement. The Falcons are 298-402-6 as a franchise. Unlike so many others in sports, this man lost EVERYTHING. Spent time in prison – roughly two years and literally had to start over.

He has done virtually everything right since walking out of prison and with a ’spot light’ shown on him from the very beginning.

He has worked hard and is living what he is preaching everyday. He has earned and deserves this contract.

For the haters… You need to move on…

I remember the first game Ryan ever came in during the preseason. He came out with the winding down in the half, and dinked and dunked it to the correct receiver, as any good QB should. You could just tell, he “got it”. Now I want Cam, and he had NO clue as to who the correct receiver was. Looks like Carolina is in for a long year.

Ryan is a work in progress, in 3 seasons he has shown a lot. Will he plateau here? It is anyone’s guess, but my thoughts are he will probably play 10-12 more years, get to the playoffs 7-8 more times, and eventually win a game there too.

For the haters, let me throw some salt in your game: Vick 6th year of his contract is voided if he completes 35% of the snaps in the 5th year, however most top tier players always get a renewal of contract before the last year of their previous contract. Which makes Vick (31 years old) most likely to sign a contract renewal in 4 years. If he’s still playing at a Pro Bowl level in 4 years he’s more likely to sign for another $100 contract before retirement….not including the millions from the new Nike endorsement.

Sorry that M&M signed off. I still want to ask how many of those playoff games did Ryan lose all by himself? How many games has he won all by himself? It’s all rhetorical, of course, since the answer is ZERO. The same number of games Vick has won/lost all by himself. The difference is that Ryan came into the league and embraced the “TEAM” concept whereas Vick is just discovering it after being beaten over the head with it for a decade or so now….

waynester you are right wow! But here is the difference Some fans began to hate vick because of his 120 million contract which was not 120 million in real dollars AJC throw him under the bus. Ryan has a lot better team than vick every had in ATLANTA LINE, COACH, RECEIVERS AND DEFENCE. NOBODY WAS IN THE STANDS IN ATLANTA UNTIL VICK. Ryan IS A GOOD KID BUT HE IS MIDDLE OF THE ROAD QB WITH ALL THOSE WEAPONS. VICK HAD 20 TD’S AND OVER1000 YARD RUSHING AND 8 TD RUSHING IN THE SAME YEAR AS A QB IN THE HISTORY OF THE NFL IN ATLANTA WITH A RAG TAG TEAM. YOU KEEP TALKING ABOUT NOT A TEAM PLAYER VICK WAS A TEAM PLAYER HE HAD NO COACH NO OFFENCE LINE NO PRO BOWL LINE EVER WHILE HE PLAYED IN ATLANTA. HE WANTED TO BE A TEAM PLAYER CUT BLOCKING LINE MAN THAT COULD NOT EAT COULD NOT PASS BLOCK AND WHAT ABOUT THE OTHER SIDE OF THE Ball DEFENCE WERE THEY TEAM PLAYERS? REEVES KNEW HOW TO WORK WITH VICK MORA, GREG KNAPP WHAT A REAL JOKE HE WOULD MESS UP RYAN TOO. THEY FAIL EVERY WHERE THEY WENT THAT IS A FACT!!

Falcons hologram…you are right, Vick had no offensive line, Roddy White & Jenkins dropped more passes in one year than any team of record (google it, they broke records by dropping the ball) Crumpler was the only reliable receiver. DID YOU KNOW:

Mike Vick was a ripe 22 years old when he brought the Falcons a playoff win, ending Brett Favres DOMINANCE of the NFL in the playoffs at home.

CHOKE is a DECLINING 26 Years old and Z-E-R-O Playoff wins.

You do the math :)

Mr Charlie

Waynster, Ryan lost as many of the playoff games by himself as he won 33 by himself in past 3 years. He is what his record says. However, he has a relatively new coach, and he is very young. Personally, I know they will have their ups and downs, but I think the long term trend is he and Smitty will grow together rather than they regress. I do think Matty as a QB has to learn how to bring it in the playoffs, as well as Smitty needs to prepare the team. And the eagles? When has a team ever won anything without and offensive line? However, Andy Reid does know how to coach them up, so it should be interesting.

——————————————

He’s going to be called “very young” until he is 50 :)

He is the same age as Aaron Rodgers and only 5 years younger than Vick, but still Z E R O Playoff wins, but getting the 1st round bye is a playoff win :)

Mr Charlie

August 31st, 2011
10:00 pm

Ok, Vick is 5 years older than Rogers and ryan had a ring, and the great MV7 has 3 playoff wins in 9 seasons.

So, we can agree both Vick and Ryan both pale on comparison to Rogers.

Now what we cleared that up, if Ryan manages 3 playoff wins in the next 5 years, he will have equaled the great MV7. What a lofty goal. Think about that, if he misses the playoffs in 2011, 12, 13, and wins a wild card in 14, and two playoff games in 2015, he will have equaled the great MV7. Now that would be an accomplishment that only you would be proud of.

And yes, a 1st round by is the same as winning a wild card game. It gets you the exact same thing. …Did Vick ever win 13 games in a season? Not that I recall.

Mr Charlie

Bottom line, Eagles are getting all the hype. When has a team who got all the hype due to free agent signings ever won anything in football? Also, when has a team that has a crap offensive line ever won anything? I get the feeling ole MV7 is gonna be running for his life up there in Philly….I am glad they are gonna pay the man, because he is gonna earn it.

Mr Charlie

August 31st, 2011
10:11 pm

Really, is going 9-7 and beating some crappy 8-8 team in the WC, then getting bounced in the 2nd round any more of an accomplishment than going 13-3 and getting bounced in the 2nd round? To me, it is the exact same thing. But, somehow to choke one is far more an accomplishment than the other. it ain’t how many playoff games you win, it is how far you get.

Mr Charlie

August 31st, 2011
10:21 pm

So, under choke logic, if a WC team gets to a Superbowl, it is more of an accomplishment than a bye team getting there, because a WC team must win 3 playoff games, and a bye team only needs to win 2 Some logic. I think this argument is over, I won. Thank you, no thank you . Feel free to play again. Don’t forget to tip the bartenders and waitresses. You’ve been schooled.

Vick screwed ATL, Vick sent to prison for a hideous crime. As I recall, 99.9% of every “expert” on things NFL predicted Vick would never, ever, again be a viable candidate for a STARTING NFL qb job.

I give Vick credit for being the greatest comeback story in NFL history.

Having said that, I hope he fails miserably when playing ATL. I hope he plays superbly when playing the other NFC South teams. All the other games I could give a rat’s azzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Falcons have lost all 4 preseason games and the best you can do is write about Vick. Between you and channel 2 reporting on the friend of Vick kennel owner just can’t seem to let it go. He has done his time and has moved on with his life. Say what you want but Vick generated more money for Blank, the team and this city than any other person. Lets try concentrating on the present team since they are suppose to be one of the best in the NFL. Maybe the next dumb article you write will be about the fans clapping for Vick when he plays here. Remember this is a free country so they can show their admiration anyway they want.

Good for MV7. I moved to ATL just before the Vicks debacle from Chi. What’s so unbelievable is how ATL has some Vick’s fans 1st then Falcons. They keep on comparing Vick to Ryan 2 diffrent QB’s with diffrent personalities & play styles. I Say to all Atlantans wish Vick well and move on he ain’t coming back, some make it seem like the Falcons wronged Vick or it was Ryans fault.MJ went to the Wizzards from the Bulls, did we still love Jordan? yes we did, did we want him to beat up on the helpless Bulls then? No we didn’t we always want the home team to come out on top NO matter how awful we were. Look at Detroit no matter how bad the Lions have been in the last decade the Lions fans always showed up cheering on their team, will Atlantans fair weather fans and Vicks fans ever see one common goal the Falcons to successed? i wonder why Saints fans always write in your blogs bacause they know Atlanta has no really fans.

we all know how capable and awesome the guys athleticism is; we , unfortunately , presumed
that the onfield savvy he displayed -which requires lightning mental reflexes as well- meant that
he was conducting his life in a professional manner back then. He was not.
It will always be another lame twist & a historical blurb but it truly was a crap taken on the city of Atlanta football fans due to their own negligence. I cannot recall a single news article or tv / sports news piece on any good Samaritan , local feel-good related to his helping the community – about Michael or his off gridiron life. He was running with thugs and psychophants with millions to burn and got into a jam for a cultural ( dog
fighting continues , btw) oversight and no one ‘where it counted ‘ looking out for such a youngster
who had millions of his own and others money. Atlanta , when you hold your stars near , make sure that it is a complete endearment and that you know who ya chose to adore. It wasn’t so much a betrayal as it was a race thing – there are neighborhoods w/in 50 miles of the capital of Atlanta where huge dogfighting rings have fresh blood in them as I type this. think of the dogs and you’ll no longer pine for Michael.
