Over/unders on wins: Falcons (10.5), Dogs (8), Jackets (6)

According to one oddsmaker, neither Mark Richt (eight wins) nor Paul Johnson (six) will have great regular seasons. (Brant Sanderlin/AJC)

Will Mark Richt and Paul Johnson do better than oddsmakers project? (Brant Sanderlin/AJC)

Matt Ryan has struggled to let go of two defeats in his career. Not surprisingly, both of those were playoff losses.

“The problem is you can’t go out and play the next week,” he said. “But you can’t let it leave you with a hangover forever.”

Not forever. Just until opening week the following season. Football season is nearing and it has been a while since all three major teams in the area were coming off such downers.

The Falcons, following a 13-3 regular season and a bye week, were hammered at home by Green Bay 48-21. Georgia, after the stench of a 6-6 regular season, did something even Bubba Joe Bulldog Boxer Shorts never could’ve envisioned, losing to Central Florida in the Liberty Bowl. Georgia Tech, in the year after an ACC championship, also tumbled to six wins and lost to Air Force in the Independence.

Caution tends to follow humiliation. While the Falcons may have put themselves in the Super Bowl hunt with the signing of Ray Edwards, their projected regular season win total this season is down, partly because of a tougher schedule but also because 13-win regular seasons generally are reserved for teams that don’t lose home playoff games by 27 points.

The over/unders are out for this season. According to the online sportsbook Bodog.com, whose lines generally equate to most in Las Vegas, the over/under on Falcons’ wins this season is 10.5. Georgia is at 8. Georgia Tech: at only 6.

These totals do not include playoff, bowl or conference championship games. So the projections basically have the Falcons going somewhere between 10-6 and 11-5, Georgia going 8-4 and Tech going on 6-6.

Personal view: The total for the Falcons is on target. Georgia and Tech both are slightly understated. The breakdown:

Over or under 6 wins for Georgia Tech?

Loading ... Loading ...

FALCONS (10.5): Go over (or under?): We’re going to find out pretty early about this team. In the first five weeks, the Falcons travel to Chicago, play host to Philadelphia, travel to Tampa Bay, travel to Seattle, then must come back home to play defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay on a Sunday night. If they can come out of that 4-1, most people would be ecstatic.

Here’s how I break it down. The Falcons will go 4-2 within the division (sweeping Carolina, splitting with New Orleans and Tampa). I’m giving them home wins over Tennessee and Jacksonville and road wins at Seattle, Detroit and Houston. That’s 9-2, leaving five difficult games: home against Philadelphia, Green Bay and Minnesota, and road at Chicago and at Indianapolis.  With three of those games in the Georgia Dome, they’ll certainly go no worse than 2-3, which would leave them 11-5.

GEORGIA (8): Go over ( I think). Once the Bulldogs get past Boise State and South Carolina, they fall into one of their easiest schedules in years. They avoid Alabama, LSU and Arkansas from the West. The rest of the schedule is stacked with easily winnable games (save maybe that one in Jacksonville): Coastal Carolina, at Mississippi, Mississippi State, at Tennessee, at Vanderbilt, Florida, New Mexico State, Auburn, Kentucky, at Georgia Tech.

I know. Last season, nobody would’ve expected such a complete program unraveling, an early season-smothering, four-game losing streak, and defeats to Mississippi State, Colorado and Central Florida. But where are the losses here? One or two early. Maybe Florida. Maybe Georgia Tech for rivalry sake. Auburn and Tennessee aren’t any good. Mississippi State is decent but it’s hard to imagine Georgia losing to them two years in a row (this time in Athens). I’m going 9-3. (My complete game-by-game Georgia breakdown will be coming in the AJC’s football section on Aug. 28.)

GEORGIA TECH (6): Go over (I’m sure. I think). For every Georgia fan who wonders, “How do you lose to Colorado?” there’s a Tech fan asking, “How do you lose to Kansas?” The Jackets should — should — mow through the first three games (Western Carolina, at Middle Tennessee State, Kansas ). Florida State is not on the schedule but there’s a difficult stretch in the middle: at Miami, Clemson, Virginia Tech. But the rest of the ACC really isn’t that good. The Jackets also have 16 days between the Virginia Tech and Georgia games, with only Duke in the middle.

Tech has lost a lot of talent in the last two years  but coach Paul Johnson seems to enjoy being around this team more and expects better leadership. I’m going 8-4 on the Jackets with four losses coming among six opponents: North Carolina State, Virginia, Miami, Clemson, Virginia Tech, Georgia.

See. That was easy. What could possibly go wrong?

Falcons probably spot on. UGA comes down to ho they come out of the first 2 games. GT has an easy schedule early, but gets tough down the stretch. Hopefully this team will be hitting on all cylinders before that stretch of games. I’d say they get between 7-9 wins.

look i understand everyone’s expecting a drop off in auburn this year but in college football you don’t go from hero to zero that soon. I’ve never heard someone call the defending national champion as “aren’t that good”

By no means am I an auburn homer, i was cheering for oregon in the natty, but robochiz will have them motivated with a chip on their shoulder on the plains.

homefield advantage truly isn’t huge for uga anymore. How many times has an opponent after a game said that sanford stadium was too loud? Heck, GT almost won there last year if that kicker could make an extra point. Kentucky the year before, Vandy a little while ago. Arkansas, the bama trouncing, on and on and on……home games doesn’t mean it’s any easier for uga-the drunken fan base is on their backs on any slip.

The Tennessee game should worry everybody. I thought we had broken the curse of Knoxville when Richt first arrived but the last few year’s have shown me the curse is back.

Not to quibble but with the Falcons it would be somewhere between 10-6 and 11-5….I think that 8 may be dead on with UGA. I would be surprised if they beat AU, UT, and Miss State. There’s a loss in there somewhere. GT should win 7 games and the Falcons- well, I would be happy with 10-6….just make the playoffs. What’s your guess on the Braves, Jeff? I’m guessing over/under of 91. I’d would take the over.

The Falcons success will be determined on how well Michael Turner performs….regardless of the receiving weapons. I think the defensive backs will look a lot better now that the defensive line is getting some help, and won’t have Jamaal Anderson up there anymore. I surely hope the tackling will be solid……. I also don’t think 10 wins will get us in the playoffs.

Jeff,

I don’t see Auburn and Tennessee as “easily winnable games” as you say. Auburn will be better than many think and Georgia has not had much success in Knoxville lately. That said I do believe the Dawgs will be favored in both games.

Danny Sheridan’s over/under for UGA is 8.5.

I believe UGA goes 9-3.

I have a hard time believing that GT can’t get over 6 wins. Last season was a complete train wreck and they still got 6 wins. UGA I pick to win 8, but I would probably take the over as well. As for the Falcons, that is a tricky one. I would bet the over on that also though.

I really think Nawlins will stink and not win more than 6 games. They’re getting old, fast. Injuries are a bugaboo with them also. What ACC Championship are you talking about, Jeff? You mean the one Tech thought they won in 2009, until they had to give it back for being a bunch of stubborn fools? As far as I know, as it stands now there wasn’t an ACC Champion in 2009 so Tech’s fall from NOT winning the ACC Championship to a 6 win season the following year doesn’t look quite so bad.

Dawns win 10 behind great defense. In CMR’s first 5 years UGA was 46-1 in games in which it scored 18+ points. In his second 5 UGA has lost 11 games in which it scored 18+ and 4 of those came last year in transition. The DC responsible for 4 of the last 5 isnt here anymore, and the other DC was trying to install a new system without the right players. The dawgs get back to Junkyard D with improved locker room, additional experience in the 3-4, and the right personal. Can’t wait!

Last season all the pundits and fans had UGA as one of the top teams in the SEC then it all fell apart losing 4 in a row. There’s no telling how they’ll do this season. Its all a big ? The outlook is promising but figure in player departures, injuries and lingering player issues w/ncaa, etc, the upside takes a big hit and doubt creeps in again w/visions of last seasons unbelieveable outcome.

So, all this guessing as how they’ll do in W’s and L’s will just have to play out on the field before we know if this seasons team is any better than others before it.

The easiest bet is GT, OVER.
IF UGA starts 2-0 then theirs is easy too (too bad you can’t bet after 9/10). But since bowls games are not included it makes UGA a tougher call … I’m seeing 8-4 for the Dawgs, if they start 1-1. 9+ Ws if they start 2-0. And 8 Ws, at best, if they start 0-2.
11-5, 12-4, or better is easy to see for the Falcons knowing the personel they have. But going out and doing it week-to-week in the NFL is the wildcard. If I HAD to bet I’d go with the OVER.

AltamahaDawg, I think he should of hired a OC after the 2003 season because the playcalling was exceptionally bad. We have had the talent to win at least 2 NC but in my opinion the offense just don’t do enough against good teams.

From 2002 to 2011 Ga is rank #2 in recruiting behind USC Trojans. Mr.Richt and Pete Carroll were hired the same year(2001). Pete won 2 NC and 6 Conference Championships but Mark Richt only won 2 Conference Championships. Remember, these 2 coaches have been the #1 and #2 best recruiting programs from 2002-11.

Wow. Huge news came out of Baton Rouge today, as Steve Kragthorpe has given up his role of offensive coordinator after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

The school released a quote from Kragthorpe where the coach says he hopes to remain quarterbacks coach for “the next 8 to 12 years,” but he will no longer be the play caller. Offensive line coach Greg Studrawa, who was offensive coordinator at Bowling Green after Urban Meyer left from 2003-06, will take over as coordinator and play caller. He has been LSU’s offensive line coach since the 2007 national championship season.

Obviously this is a big shock to the system of a team expected to contend for the West title and be among the nation’s five best teams. It’s far too early to say how this might affect the team, but obviously thoughts and prayers go out to Kragthorpe and his family as they begin dealing with this awful disease.

No sooner do we get really pumped about football season, and real life rears its ugly head. My thoughts and best wishes go out to all LSU fans. Some things are just more important than football.

UGA has major offensive line problems. No depth at all. If they avoid any injuries (doubtful), they may be OK. But a true freshman or two is going to have to step up and help or the offense could be in big trouble.

tony, the standard for the National Championship this decade has been the crystal football, Pete has one of those. Richt has been close a couple of times in that same time period. I know that close doesn’t cut but it’s not like Richt has been out in left field either. Besides, why did Petey leave USC? Because Seattle offered him a spot? No. It was because the hammer was on its way down.

Tech’s QB will be Tevin Washington.
I am going to leave the decision-making to the coaches.
With Tech’s system, it is great to have depth 3 or 4 deep.
Tevin played pretty good last year and the job is his.
If he plays better, he can really nail it down.
Nesbit was injured at times all three years, though 2009 he only lost a quarter in the Georgia game.
The backups will probably get a chance to prove they are better.

Falcons 11-5 or 12-4. Depends on how fast Jones is a serious WR threat defenses have to cover and how soon a 3rd receiver steps up. With addition of Edwards the Falcons could go 14-2 but again it all depends on how fast the offense gets clicking. It took GB until late in the season last year so we will see.

Georgia. With SC at home UGA will be 9-3 at worst and VERY possibly 11-1. With their 2 MOST difficult games on paper at home 12-0 is also not out of the question but even if they win the 1st two, it will be hard for the young QB and running back to not have a good game or a turnover in a close game down the road so while not likely, this could be another 1980 and you know what, it’s about time! and there are several similiarities between 1979/1980 and 2010/2011.

Tech? Who knows. I say at least 7 games but the question is has other teams defenses adjusted to Tech’s option offense and if so what is Tech going to do to counter? Do they have the players to hang in there against the tougher opponents? I think Clemson is about to pull away the next few years in the ACC so Tech better be VERY good on D and at running the option. 7-9 wins is my thinking.

West guy. you mean UGA 38 MSU 14 right? Son you are not at home this year and the crowd will play a huge role. UGA is going to be much better at NOT turning the ball over and has a home run hitting RB who can also catch. They have a year of experience under the belt with the new pro defensive scheme. UGA is going to be better in every area, will control the clock more and be at home.

UGA 28 MSU 20. If fortunate enough to score that many on this D. The D played great last year in most games, it was the offense who had suspensions, turnovers and untimely penalties and could not run the ball. The special teams and turnovers led to many scores that were not the fault of the D. I expect the defense to be MUCH stingier this year so you might be scoring 10 or less. No team might score 20 except Boise. South Carolina will NOT score 20.

BAMA Dude

Columbus, you don’t have the offensive line to run the table in the SEC. Hell, for that matter, you don’t have the running backs or receivers either. UGA won’t be awful, but that 11-1 deal is a pipe dream. I honestly believe USCe is gonna have their way with you early and another couple will drop along the way.

8-4 sounds about right to me. Injuries will happen. Thin offensive line. Bobo still calling the plays. Boise State might be better then a lot of UGA fans give them credit for. Spurrier or Richt….who would you rather have as your coach? UGA could easily lose two from Ms. State,UT,FL (Richt vs. FL:2-8),Auburn who might not be as bad as Schultzie thinks. Yeh, 8-4 is about right. McGarity who has no more backbone or whatever then the Black dude he replaced will still keep Richt on if he goes 8-4. So the Richt fans need not worry. The rest of the UGA fans who yearn for a top-tier program will get screwed again. They should be used to it by now. Thus it is at UGA.

“*If UGA somehow starts 2-0, I reserve the right to amend this prediction to 10-3.”

If UGA wins the 2 hardest games on the schedule you will predict 10-3? Who will they lose to since they just beat the defending SEC East champs and a top 10 team in the nation? Maybe UF, UT or MSU? I know for a fact that UGA will not lose all 3 of these games. I dont think they will lose 2 of them. So that would be 11-1. Your thinking seems very illogical so what is it based on?

UGA 1999

I am confident that GT Offense will be 1 TD better in 2011 than 2010.
I am also confident GT Defense will be 1 TD better in 2011 than 2010.

GT O will score 1 more TD per game.
GT D will allow 1 less TD per game.

In 2010, that alone would have added wins over Kansas, Clemson, VT and UGA.

Just Nesbitt staying healthy in 2010 would have added wins over VT and UGA.

2010 could be summed up with 2 keys: Turnovers and Special Teams.

Those 2 areas were the DECIDING factors in 5 of 7 GT losses in 2010.

Those 2 areas were the key factors in losses to: NCST, Clemson, Miami, VT, UGA.

However, Miami would still have been a very tough out,
even without 2 second-half TOs in the red zone.

Turnovers and Special Teams wont be problems in 2011.

Boise in ATL

August 4th, 2011

As a causal observer – and huge college football fan:

UGA has so many changes going on and questions:
– RB situation
– O-Line situation
– WR’s transitions
Defense – new LB corp.
– second year in 3/4 when they STILL struggled toward end of season – how much improvement will UGA see?
– How will new DL perform?
– will new S&C program yield results?
– team psyche?

Just a HUGE amount going on – and opening with two tough opponents when UGA needs some time to jell into a team.

So – How does it break down?
WINS: Coastal Carolina, Ole Miss, Vandy, New Mexico State, GT
Losses: Boise, USCe, Florida
Swing games: Mississippi State, Tennessee and Auburn

This sure looks like 8-4 to me – could be 7-5 or 9-3.

UGA will need a few games for the offense to get it going and jell – will have to depend heavily on the defense early in the season.

Loss to Boise – too many changes and moving parts against a strong Boise team returning 14 starters. Boise will be in mid season form and will jump out early – UGA will make a game of it – but if the game is close in the 4Q – Boise will win this game. I could easily see Boise up 10- 0 or 14-0 very early in this game – similar to the VT game when Boise came out smoking hot – and pulled out the victory at the end of the game.

USCe – problem here is South Carolina NOW knows it can beat UGA. Confidence in close games used to be USCe downfall – now they know they can beat UGA, Spurrier knows he can beat UGA win – and that is huge. Confidence and will to win is HUGE in the 4Q – and Carolina NOW knows they can win the physcial games against the UGA’s and the Tennessee’s of the SEC.
Kind of a reversal – used to see how USCe would find ways to lose games – and now UGA is like to old South Carolina. This will be a very physcal game – and UGA had better hope the new found S&C will work for the defense in the 4Q and the O-Line will be able to run block – as last year – it was pretty pathetic.

Florida- Wow – what can you say – Florida was a mediocre team last year – and still was better than UGA. Problem here is Florida is more talented than UGA – and has more speed. Even though a new staff is in play – this game is late enough in the year that Florida will have it rolling by then.
Muschamp on Defense is huge. Weiss on offense – is huge (no jokes please). Say what you will about Weiss as HC at ND – but as an OC – the man is excellent.
Weiss vs Bobo?
Muschamp vs Grantham?

This will be a great game – but ALWAYS go with Florida in this game until UGA actually wins a few of these. Richt has a losing record against 3 Florida coaches – Spurrier, Zook and Meyer. Florida somehow wills themselves to win this game – even if UGA has a better team – they find ways to keep Florida in it.

Other concerns:
Auburn will fall off greatly – but the staff is good and they have excellent young talent – a dangerous team that should be playing bvery good football end of the year. If UGA struggles this year – this game is ripe for the upset. Which is the history of this game.

Tennessee – UGA should win – but again – strange things can happen in Knoxville. UGA should have won last visit to Knoxville – but got blown out by Kiffen and Company. Tennessee will be improved over last year – so will UGA. UGA seems to have one or two let down games a year that are hard to explain – and Tennessee could win this game.

Mississippi State – let’s face it – MSU out played, out fought, out coached UGA last year. As improved as MSU was last year – they were still the 5th place SEC West team last year. UGA should NEVER lose to the #5 SEC West team. This just shows how poor UGA was (along with losses to Colorado and UCF). UGA should win this game – but if the offense has not found itself by this game – look out for the upset. The defense better be ready.

That’s it – best of luck to UGA – and hope Georgia considers a trip to the SMURF TURF one year!

CPJ beat Dabo when in his first year and twice in his second year.
A new coach for both Miami and UNC makes both of those teams difficult to predict.

UGA 1999: Another key GT stat from 2010:

GT had MORE total yards and more rush yards against UGA
than against EVERY OTHER TEAM GT played in 2010, except UVA.

GT vs UVA:

GT-33 UVA-21
Rush Yds: 477
Total Yds: 536

GT vs UGA

GT-34 UGA-42
Rush Yds: 411
Total Yds: 512
(UGA’s last TD was a CPJ “gimme” that almost cost UGA the game)

So, if the 2010 GT-UGA game was 35-34 very near the end, then if in 2011 GT’s Offense & Defense are 1 TD better, then GT has another 500+ Yds Offense vs UGA and wins by at least 14.

GT doesnt have a problem on Offense. Its primarily had a problem on Defense.

So, if GT Offense & Defense are both 1 TD better in 2011, than 2010,
then GT could go 10-2, with a convincing win over UGA.

Dawgman – so let me get this strait – because Georgia beat up on Boise in 2005 – that is totally relevent to the Kick-off classic in the Dome in 2011?

Well – you might be right!!!

Let’s expand on your Logic:
– If UGA opened against West Virginia – WV would win because they beat UGA in 2005!
– If UGA opened against UCF – UH OH – UCF wins again in back to back games – because historically speaking – UCF is the better program in most recent times.
– IF UGA opened against the NAVAL ACADEMY – the NAVY would win – becasue UGA has NEVER beaten the Naval Academy in their two attempts.
– IF UGA opened against MARYLAND – bet the house on MARYLAND as UGA has only beaten Maryland twice in 6 attempts (2-3-1)

Need me to go on?

OK – last one!!!!
IF UGA opened up against Miami of OHIO – from an historic perspective – better bet on Miami of Ohio!!!! Know why???? Because the only time they met – in the 1974 Tangerine bowl – MIAMI of OHIO spanked UGA 21 -10!!!!! I am sure this victory would give the 2011 MIAMI of OHIO team the confidence to spank UGA again – after all my friend – HISTORY is on their side!!!!

If UGA beats Boise – it’s becasue UGA has improved greatly as a team.

Again – best of luck to your season.

Boise

I watched the Boise/VT game over again. to listen to you and all the ESPN droolers, that was a 40 point win. Reality is you came from behind in the 4th quarter.

i know we lost our bowl game to UCF

So what

Look at the actual matchups and quit spewing hype filled tirades that someone else has said or written.

We are bigger(By a lot) on both lines of scrimmage. That is where games are won, especially early on as teams feel each other out.

This is a home game for Georgia. 64,000 of the 71,000 in attendance.

Boise lost Pettus and Young-they won the VT game.
We lost Aj Green

I say bigger loss for Boise because you had them all year. We had AJ for 8 games and we were looking over our shoulder for him in the other 4.

Your DL is very good even though they are undersized. They will provide a challenge for our OL

Biggest points to me:

2 new coordinators for Boise
2nd year of our 3-4
New disciplned approach for us(yet to be proven)

Anyone predicting a blowout on either side is an idiot.

1 team that knows how to win and plays hard
1 team out to erase 2010 and fighting for its coach’s life

I say 21-17 UGA

DawginLex, you make the most reasonable assertions I’ve seen yet about UGAvBSU from a dawg fan. I’m forever White and Gold, but I think you’re right. Take Georgia over Boise but don’t expect a blowout. VT really seemed to be playing right there with them last season, and it’s probably not the same Boise team. That’s my head, but where’s my heart? Well, as always I’ll want my calf fattened for the slaughter as they say…I likes my November opponents ranked in the Top 5.

Tech is the best bet for over if only because the win total is the lowest of the three.

I expect the Falcons to also be over.

UGA is the toughest call. My gut says over because I expect the defense to improve. But how many games was the defense responsible for losing last year? If we analyze their losses, it the offense that lost several of the games. Turnovers, particularly fumbles, are largely random. I expect some of those issues not to happen again this year. Go over, but it’s close.

Referencing the history logic, I agree. But you are attempting then the same history logic in your references to Boise ST’s game last year and there is no relevance. You had to come from behind to beat VT. Who lost the Div II school James Madison the next week. Claim that victory solid and stellar if you wish but VT was a very bad team last year. Not even resembling them of years past. The ACC has been the weakest of the BCS conferences for a number of years now. There’s just not much there to hook your wagon to.

14 starters from last year? That’s not a lot when you think about it and your guys lost some good talent. It could be argued, “the” talent other than Moore. I like your smug confidence but, I think you are in for a lesson on history but, more so tradition, strength, speed and depth.

I say it’s a fairly close in the 1st half but in the 3rd, perhaps late the Dawgs get firm control on to a clear victory

My assessment of Tech (why take the OVER without a doubt): experience at D-line, talent and experience at LB, and young talent (knock is experience) at DB; schedule with built-in ramp up to ACC games with rivals at home; projected improvement in pass efficiency (I have myriad reasons to be convinced of this, but suffice it to say WR development is the most sure-fire bet.) I see 5 “gimme” wins on the schedule if we field the 2010 team. With improvement at these listed position groups, I expect 2-3 more W’s than the 5 gimmes.

That’s my 2 cents.

Boise in ATL

DawginLex – I hear what you are saying – and the VT game was a nailbiter. Boise could have easily lost that game after VT woke up. Boise jumped out early. It looked as if VT was going to win – but Boise is relentless and will find a way if the game is close at the end. We won – that’s all that matters.

I do not recall making predictions of a Boise blow out over UGA. However, I am predicting Boise to win the game based on UGA of 2010 and the fact that UGA has so many areas of the game to address – your OL, RB’s and WR’s – new DL and LB’s.

Yes, I think UGA will be much improved and will get even better as the season progresses. However, starting off against Boise and UCSe – when UGA is trying to develop offensive consistency with your oLine issues, RB issues, and new WR’s – is a huge challenge. Your Defense will have to be stellar in order for UGA to win the first two games because I am not buying that your offense will be totally clicking early.

The Boise offense is in better position to click from the get go. Yes, you are correct we lost 2 very good WR’s – but our next guys are ready and very talented as well. Probably better than Marlon Brown – your #2 WR.

If this game opens up – you have to question if the UGA offense can keep pace and not make mistakes.

Addressing your remarks on UGA’s superior size and speed. Yep – no doubt.
Oklahoma, Oregon (twice) and VT boasted the same thing and I think all of these teams would have handled UGA over the last two years.

Having this game early – works very much in Boise’s favor. Give Caoch Peterson time to prepare – we will have an offensive game plan against your 3/4. Our defense will keep pace as well. But the big thing in Boise’s favor is that we are very disciplined and play as a team – something that has not been seen coming out of Athens the last few years. If this game was later on in the season – I would be more nervous about this game than I am now as that would really favor UGA.

If UGA wins – it will be because of Richt and staff have done an unbelievable job in correcting a lot of issues in the program – and the team has come together quickly. If UGA is not mid season ready – then Boise will win.

AR Dawg – VT won the ACC – beat FSU -which totally destroyed Florida and South Carolina.

However – and to your point – this was all LAST year – and in college football – teams can improve or implode pretty quickly based on who they lost and what they have to replace.

To your point – 14 starters returning means we lost 7 starters total – the key is that we do have very good depth and we have our QB returning. Kellen Moore returning is key for us. If we lost Kellen Moore – then UGA would be favored- no doubt.

Also key – this is the first game of the season – and UGA has a lot to address on offense. I am not buying that Bobo will have the offense in mid-season form the first game of the season. OLine issues, RB issues (although I like the fact that R. Samuel is an incredible team player), new WR’s to replace Green and Durham. I think it will take several games for the offense to come into their own – this is big for Boise and to our advantage. We are catching UGA at the best time of the season – at least from our perspective.

If this game was midseason – and Boise could not approach this game like a bowl game with all the time in the world to prepare – yes, I would concerned. I think UGA will mprove as the season progresses.

Am I concerned now??? you bet – but we have opened against Oregon and VT in back to back years and won both. Oregon went to the Rose Bowl – and VT won the ACC and went to a BCS bowl. I think both of these teams would have beaten UGA the last two years – and probably have beaten Colorado and UCF as well. Neither of these games were easy – but we won both.

If we were opening against Alabama or LSU – I would think Boise would be in too deep – however, we are opening against the reigning #8/#9 SEC team . and catching them early when they need some games to under their belts to get it going.

Again – If UGA is not mid season ready – the Boise will win.

Boise in ATL,

You have noticed that the line opened-up in early summer at BSU -4.5, but now the game is only BSU -1, right?

The bulk of your comments are validated; however, there was obviously a lot of early money placed on UGA for vegas to make such a huge swing in the line……before even fall camp begins.

This game and surrounding climate are truly resembling the classic early season upset of 2 nationally respected/ranked teams.

P_The_Ricker – Yes the odds are evening up. What is the saying – give the home team 3 points?

Believe, we are extremely grateful to be playing UGA in the Kick-off classic. Boise’s program has come a long way – but finding games against the tradional elites is hard – so thanks to UGA athletic director and Coach Richt for playing Boise.

This is ALMOST a No win situation for UGA – you beat us – it’s because you are supposed to and someone put Boise in their proper place. If UGA loses – then it’s embarrasing to the program and the UGA fans out there. I say ALMOST because I read that Coach Richt said that UGA needs this game to get back to national relevence.

Programs cycle – UGA has bottomed out – and will be much improved – and I think that as the season progresses – UGA could possibly develop into a monster – much like 2008 season when they lost early – then was probably the best team by seasons end and spanked Hawaii.

I really like the fact that Richt has changed up the defense staff – changed S&C – and have shown players the door. Losing your to RB’s from last year is no loss for the UGA program with the exception of an immediate depth problem experience wise. But that will fix itself as the season progresses.

Hey – living in Atlanta – I follow the SEC and ACC very closely – and root for UGA to win the SEC. The SEC is king – just incredible depth of Big time football schools. For some reason – I can not find myself rooting for Clemson or South Carolina. The rest of the SEC is great to watch.

QUESTION TO SEC FANS:
If the SEC picks up TEXAS A&M for the WEST.
Who would you prefer to pick up in the SEC EAST?

Clemson seems like a great fit for USCe and UGA/TN, etc.
GT seems like a great fit – heart of SEC country – and how cool would it be to see Auburn/Florida/LSU/TN/ALABAMA/USCe playing at GT.
VT seems to have an SEC mentality about them
FSU seems like a great choice as well

Who would be the best team to expand the SEC East?

Say what? Falcons 9-7 at best. 4-1 the first five games….yeah right. Possible 3-2 with a little luck. Also, your definitely over looking Seattle, Houston and especially Detroit. Remember, the Falcons have done nothing to upgrade their secondary, the weakest area last year. Also, they have no depth at running back, yet again. Splitting against the Saints and Bucs? No sir. I know everybody hates the Saints but man look at the depth they have at the running back position and now defensive line. The Buc’s didn’t do much in free agency with money to spend, but we’ve seen how young and competitive they were last year. they didn’t upgrade because they don’t need to. Keep it real folks….Last year was the Falcons best opportunity. Now, they’ll just end up in the middle of the pack.

Tech: 8-4

They’ll lose to Georgia (again) but it won’t matter (it never does) because there will be bigger fish to fry or they will claim a moral victory. When FL. won a championship w/ Chris Leak at QB…people acted as if Tebow would just step right in & nobody would be able to beat them, but they went on to lose about 4 or 5 games that yr. AU could turn out to be better than people think. Just bc they won a championship last yr. doesn’t gaurantee anything for this yr. though. Look for the heat to finally get to Mike (sideline route) Mularky and he will be gone at seasons’ end. I am just NOT sold on Turner. Snelling needs more carries, maybe even Ovie should get more touches. Yeah, Yeah Yeah, I know we got ourselves a new WR, but he is a rookie. The play-calling last year was way way way too predictable, 3rd and 5 we throw to Roddy on a 8 yard out route to the sideline. 2nd and whatever, TG over the middle. First and 10 or first and goal, Turner up the gut for a loss……we’ll see, special teams, Koenen is gone…why? Defense needs to learn that getting a sack means you have to play contain first.

I personally don’t think Tech should have lost the past 2. At the most 1. It seems to me that they were only a couple of crazy plays away from winning both games (#1 receiver in the draft overall drops a pass on 4th down, then in 2010 a fumble inside the 10 and UGA recovers a different fumble while semi-out-of-bounds). However the same can be said the other way, UGA had some bad plays that could have cost them the game too. Either way, you’re looking at two extremely close games in which neither team dominated, just got unlucky at different times… To be honest, no team since 2008 (in my opinion) has separated itself from the other as being significantly “better”.

I’ll give Georgia 8 wins. I think they could get 9, but I doubt it without AJ Green. I’ll lean towards the over but it’s close.

Tech, I’m sad to say should be thrilled with 7 wins. I think the talent is there but they are all freshmen. No defense either, and it doesn’t help that Georgia is competing (not much of a competition sadly) for the 3-4 style players. I think with the weak ACC, 6 wins is a solid push.

For the Falcons, I think they’ll win 11. The schedule is pretty rough this year. I’ll agree with Jeff on the division, and the easy games. I’ll go a step farther and say we will drop Philly (always do) and Green Bay (defense won’t contain Rodgers). I think Chicago and Minnesota should be wins. That puts us at 11-4, leaving us with Indy. That game will be a shootout, because the Falcons are too overpowering on offense and Peyton will pick apart our defense. Could go wither way.

I think GT will score enough to win most games. Clemson, VT and Georgia will test the offense especially the running game. I know every play is a running play. My concern is again our defense. Surely it has to be better than last year. However, if we can’t put pressure on the quarterback we will get picked apart because our corners and safetys are just not fast enough.

Dawgs will not lose to a turncoat led Gator team.

Right. And nobody would have predicted witting AJ down to tour games. Best player in the country. Wow. That had no effect.
