Teams like the aggressive Hunter Pence (sliding) but Phillies may have an edge on Braves.
Good morning. No trades yet.
The pursuit of Houston outfielder Hunter Pence by several teams, including the Braves and Philadelphia, is what’s creating a logjam in the trade market, according to ESPN’s Buster Olney. From his latest blog (which requires an Insider subscription).
… It is clear that right now, [Pence] has the greatest market value of any available player. The Astros’ initial instinct seemed to be to play conservative and hang onto him, but they probably will never again get the kind of offers they’re getting for Pence — the Phillies’ package of pitcher Jarred Cosart and first baseman Jonathan Singleton, or Atlanta’s offer, which presumably includes young pitchers they would not consider trading for Carlos Beltran. For the Braves, the stakes are high, because they already are faced with a postseason in which they may have to face Beltran, and now their most prominent division rival appears to be the front-runner to get Pence.
… [Pence] does not fit the profile of an elite offensive player, with his unorthodox swing and playing style. But he’s a good player greatly respected for how hard he plays, and unlike Beltran — a pure rental — the team that acquires Pence could have him for the next two years and beyond. He’s the type of player the Phillies could use now; he’s the type of player the Braves could use now.
… At some point, the rest of the dominoes behind Pence will fall: Ryan Ludwick, perhaps to Cleveland or Atlanta; Coco Crisp, maybe to the Braves; Carlos Quentin, perhaps if somebody will pay to pry him away from the White Sox, although Kenny Williams wakes up today just three games out in a very, very winnable division.
You know where I stand: general manager Frank Wren would be playing a dangerous game if he did nothing of significance.
I spoke to Braves catcher David Ross after Thursday’s 5-2 loss to the Pirates and he did nothing to hide his belief that the Braves need help. The team’s run totals in the last six games are 2-3-1-4-2-2.
From Ross: “I think we all know we need a piece. I don’t think we’re desperate for a piece. But another presence in the lineup would be nice. Especially being as left-handed heavy as we are, a right handed bat [is needed]. [We hear] the rumors. Wren hasn’t actually talked to me. He’s not really blowing up my phone, asking my opinion.”
Chipper Jones acknowledged the team could use another bat but he cautioned against players being distracted by the trade talk.
“I’m confident that we’ll do something,” he said. “What it is? I don’t know. To what magnitude? I don’t know. I’m pretty confident we’ll better our ballclub in the next couple of days. But the guys in here need to worry about the Florida Marlins [the next opponent]. And we’re confident we can win games with what we’ve got. So everybody’s kind of been instructed to stay tunneled in on what our goal is every day and not worry about Frank Wren’s job.”
When asked if he believed the team needs to make a trade, Jones responded, “I’m not going to alienate my current teammates. All teams can probably benefit from an injection of new blood when it’s a quality player. But we don’t have 60-plus wins for nothing. We’re a pretty good ballclub. We do it our way. As long as we pitch, we’re going to win. If we don’t pitch, we’re going to struggle.”
David O’Brien weighed in on the benefits of the Braves dealing for Quentin, but some remain skeptical that Chicago is serious about dealing him.
That’s it for now. We’ll let you know if anything serious develops.
Who would be your first choice for the Braves? Pence, Quentin or somebody else?

Give me Michael Bourn and BJ Upton. If not Bourn, Coco Crisp and BJ Upton. There’s a huge price for Hunter Pence although he has only 11 home runs. I like the speed of the threesome listed above with Upton having not only speed but 16 home runs on top of that. I know his average is only .230 but he’s a talent for sure.

Sounds like the Phils won’t be giving up Brown for Pence, plus the Astros want pitching prospects anyway. I don’t know if the Phils can get this done…

Everyone in Houston loves Pence. He’s under contract through 2013. He better than anyone in our outfield. We aren’t scoring runs. Chipper can’t stay healthy. We can’t win in the playoffs without some help. I can come up with 10 more reasons why we should make this move. Jeff whats the holdup really? Teheran is the only one of the “Big 4″ that is really untouchable…

I don’t think the lefty/righty thing is a good enough reason to rule out Michael Bourn. To me he addresses more of the Braves’ needs than anyone else. Pence and Quentin would be good acquisitions too, but Bourn is the guy for me.

Braves need make two moves here. Plain and simple. Cant score runs if no one gets on base. Leadoff hitter is not Prado. Sorry, he is best as a #2. Bourn needs to be gotten, give away Mclouth and high prospect(s) for bourn(just not any of “BIG 4″), sign him up long term and there we go. Leadoff hitter & speed threat we been missing since Furcal left has now been filled.
Next, go after a right handed power hitter, I dont care how its done, trade one of big 4.
Seriously Jurrgens is here, Hanson is here, Beachy is here, wheres the other 4 gonna fit? Get rid of atleast one top pitching prospect, if not two, depending on what comes back to make this happen.
All Braves really need is 2 prospects to come up after Lowe and Hudson leave, and Hudson might be around after 2012 contract expires so as long as they keep the BIG 3 (Jurrgens, Hanson, Beachy) could even argue Medlen then really why do we need 4 top prospects? To keep in AAA? to take whos place? to trade? duh! trade atleast 1 if not 2 and lets try to win this year!

I never thought I would say this but I completely agree with Chipper’s entire quote. If everything does as it did in the first half, plus uggla hits like he should and freeman continues his tear, then I stand behind the team that got us here all the way through october.
Jeff, you having the opinion of “we need to make a move” is comedic. Considering every columnist in the country is of that opinion for their team. Because it gives you all something to talk about and prognosticate on.

Well Mclouth on DL now. Think its time Atlanta gives up on him. Need new CF and new corner outfielder! Trade some prospects!

Trade for Pence eminent… pretty sure it’s gonna be the Phils but I guess we’re still a possibility based on previous rumors.

#Braves want “athletic corner bat” to control beyond this year. That describes Pence. Quentin less athletic. Ludwick, Willingham FAs. Rosenthal reports.

Wren is eating sh!t again! He saw Beltran going to the giants for nothing. The Braves has better prospects than that guy Wheeler. Now he is going to see Pence going to the Phillies a guy that remind me a lot of Matt Halliday cause in his yeras in Colorado nobody heard about him and he was putting the Rockies in his shoulders. Three years in the Majors and Pence is being close to .300 plus more than 20 HR’s. So Why not? If not you have players like BJ Upton, Ludwick and Quentin who have playoff experience. I see Quentin the most to make an impact right away. BJ Upton is hot and cold but can get in base and steal some bases. Ludwick is not being the same since he leaves St. Louis. Maybe a change can help him. HJosh Willinghan is being also a very consistent middle of the order hitter. But wren I don’t know what he is expecting to move one of his youn players, he has a bunch of them!

Frank Wren who doesn’t want to win. This team desperately needs a big right handed bat and hes doing nothing.
