Paul Johnson slams NCAA for Georgia Tech’s probation

Paul Johnson questions the NCAA's actions during its investigation at Georgia Tech. (Johnny Crawford/AJC)

Paul Johnson wasn't happy during Tech's probation news conference. He's still fuming. (Johnny Crawford/AJC)

Paul Johnson doesn’t cheat. Doesn’t like cheaters. Calls the suggestion that he would cheat “almost insulting.”

“I’m sure I cheated in board games,” the Georgia Tech coach said. “And when I played, yeah, you’d do stuff. Move the ball forward. Move it back. Kick it. Maybe grab a guy where you’re not supposed to. But heck, everybody does that.”

But not as a coach. It’s why Johnson took a verbal 2-by-4 to the NCAA’s Committee on Infractions. He says he did nothing wrong. He says the punishment slapped on Georgia Tech’s football program, including the forfeiture of the 2009 ACC championship, is wrong. He wants the school to appeal. That decision hasn’t been made yet, but the trophy has been removed from a case in the Edge Athletics Center and is sitting in an office closet.

At the very least, Johnson wants it known that the Yellow Jackets gained no competitive advantage before the conference title win over Clemson. Also, he’s not giving his ring back.

“I’m proud of what those guys did on the field — they won it on the field,” Johnson said. “The NCAA can’t take away the memories or what happened on the field. Let’s say somebody took something illegal. I’m still not convinced that happened, but let’s say it did. Well, you’re punishing 115 guys who didn’t do anything but work their butt off.”

Johnson said he’s still “stunned” by the NCAA’s actions. He never expected anything of significance would come of the investigation until, “They started ripping [former compliance director] Paul Parker in the hearing.”

He understood why the NCAA might be upset that athletic director Dan Radakovich informed him of the impending investigation after he been told not to, but said, “I knew there was no coverup. If we were trying to cover the thing up, we would’ve just said that Dan never told me anything. Their perception of what happened and my perception of what happened wasn’t close.”

Johnson’s perception: “That they came in here and talked to seven or eight kids and they didn’t find what they were looking for.

“I’ve been in this business a long time. You see all the things that are going on in college sports today, and you get slammed for this? I mean, come on now. I feel for Dan and [Tech president G.P. "Bud"] Peterson. I’ve known Dan since I got here. Dan Radakovich isn’t going to cheat or cover up anything. Did you get bad information or maybe make a bad decision? You can debate that. But I certainly wasn’t privy to any information we had.”

The Tech case will go down as one of the strangest in NCAA history. Investigators never found proof or established a paper trail indicating former players, specifically Demaryius Thomas and Morgan Burnett, received improper benefits from agents. But there was the suspicious matter of $312 worth of clothing given to Thomas. Radakovich also went against the NCAA’s mandate by forewarning Johnson (and indirectly players) of the investigation.

Any potential violations might’ve been secondary, but the NCAA didn’t like the way Tech acted during the investigation, perceiving administrators tried to hinder the process.

Johnson said, “We thought we were cooperating,” then pointed to a black book on his desk and added, “I guess if they say that book right there is red and you don’t agree, then you’re not cooperating.”

He named at least five Tech players who were interviewed during the bye week before the Georgia game — Thomas, Burnett, Derrick Morgan, Jonathan Dwyer and Cord Howard (as well as Morgan’s roommates) — and said they shuttled off and on the field during practice. Peterson, who was relying primarily on the advice of since-retired school counsel Randy Nordin, ultimately cleared Burnett and Thomas to play.

Johnson said an investigator also interviewed one of his assistant coaches.

“They tried to say that he [the assistant coach] was directing players to agents,” Johnson said. “He even asked me if I was directing players to agents. I told him, ‘Dude, I don’t even know what you’re talking about.’ ”

The assumption here is that the NCAA was not expecting a warm embrace. Maybe they’ve just got a thing about bluntness.

“If you went out and you did something to gain a competitive advantage, if  you knew you cheated or you paid somebody, it might be easier to swallow,” Johnson said. “But when you don’t feel like you’ve done anything wrong, it’s tough to take.”

The one saving grace for Tech is that the NCAA didn’t take away scholarships or issue a postseason ban. Also, this whole ugly process and resulting anger might help Johnson’s cause in at least one area with his players.

“Motivation won’t be a problem,” he said.

Johnson is on the edge delusional. He should not be representing a D-1 school as head coach if he acts like he talks.
His words make it seem that he will cheat without caring as long as he feels he did not cheat.
There are written rules, coach, abide by them.

As a UGA alumnus, I hate Tech. BUT, I hate the NCAA more. They have lost all credibility and all instituions should leave that organization and form another — and start all over. Things have gotten out of hand. The cases the NCAA makes against schools only to allow Cam Newton to play the system is a travesty. NAAA — you suck.

The bottom line is that the players in question were coached up in how to talk to the inspector prior to their meetings. Paul Johnson knows as well as I do that interviews with players over minor infractions can often lead to bigger fish and tech intentionally acted to obfuscate the process with an aim to protect the talent. Of course, I think the NCAA is overbearing and the punishments are often capricious and inconsistently applied but how can you not know that it’s not ok manipulate or even give the appearance of manipulating your athletes’ testimony? They bear a lot of responsibility for turning this molehill into a mountain.

Good Lord Techies…..

If this EXACT same situation had taken place at a school up the road (who has beaten you 9 of the last 10 meetings), you would all be screaming for the death penalty. And if the coach of that team up the road was vocal about his disdain for getting caught CHEATING, you would say he is way out of line, and demand he shut up and take his punishment like a man.

The vast, vast majority of you techies have spent the majority of your lives being made fun of, and outcasted because of your weirdness and nerdiness. Now that you convene with others just like you at a geek school in Atlanta, and have a football coach who enjoys speaking his mind, you feel like you can vicariously adopt his attitude and crassness. But the truth is, you are still as odd, weird, nerdy, and outcasted as you were before the manboobs coach of yours decided to open his mouth in an outright manor.

So YOU, techies, quit being hypocritical…. take a second and imagine these headlines being about UGA and Richt, and then realize that you are far from immune to bad press.

The NCAA is an arbitrary, capricious, and heavily politicized organization that would not stand up to public nor congressional scrutiny. They convicted Tech without a paper trail and basically with no proof except maybe one player got some clothes? Seriously? I believe the NCAA is also accused of fabricating evidence in this case- just like in numerous and I mean numerous other cases.

Birdawg – I’m not saying they were coached up. I’m saying that when DRad was specifically told not to tell anyone about the investigation with the exception of tech’s president and then goes on to tell coach Johnson who then talks about it with his players, from the perspective of the investigator, that looks lack of cooperation and that you’re potentially trying to proactively cover something up. Investigators are going to be suspicious of inconsistencies and tech athletic department knows that. If they’re confident that there’s nothing to hide, they should’ve kept the info high level as intended.

Cheating and breaking rules calls for penalties. Ticking off the NCAA by not giving a “perception of cooperation” is not against a rule, and there is also no rule that says that Tech AD had to abide by the NCAA’s order to not alert Johnson to the fact that his team was being investigated.

George Stein – I’m not saying the punishment fits the crime which it doesn’t and I’m not saying that I’m comfortable with punishing appearances, which I’m not. The point is though that you hinder or give the appearance of hindering an NCAA investigator by not complying with their requests at your own peril. What they got is not fair but it is predictable. Maybe not to this extent but surely they would have to know there would be some blowback for ignoring their instructions. If they didn’t know, then the question become why didn’t they know which raises the point on whether or not tech has competent people in place to deal with compliance.
From personal experience, I’ve been working in the pharma industry for the last twelve years dealing with the FDA and if my company just blatantly ignored instructions given by an inspector trying to conduct an audit, boy-howdy, you better believe there’d be some hell to pay.

ROFL, I hate to inform you of the truth, but the former Georgia Southern coach you are thinking of made a pitstop between his Auburn days and his Georgia Southern days at none other than Georgia. He was the DC during the championship run.

I think we all know that if they want to put Tech on probation for this, they might as well put all teams in Division I-A (or whatever the hell we’re supposed to call it now) on probation. It is happening at every school. If he HONESTLY believed his players were telling the truth, what kind of a person would you have thought him to be if he had denied them the opportunity to play in some of the biggest games of their lives just to cover his own butt? I

The NCAA can TELL Auburn how to cheat, can let Ohio State players play in a bowl game while under investigation for worse, can’t keep an eye on John Blake at UNC who has a 25 year reputation as a cheater… and they bring the hammer down over THIS? What a joke. No wonder they are ineffective, incompetent and can’t figure out how to implement an 8-game playoff system.

George Stein – From their perspective though, they still have the smoking gun of the $312 worth of merchandise which they know exists but can’t tie to explicitly to anyone because their interview process is going nowhere. When they examine why their interview process became a dead-end, they see that the head coach and players were notified of their interest against their instructions. Not as applicable as with a government regulatory agency, but I believe the NCAA does expect member schools to be cooperative and non-confrontational simply because they lack any other warrant power to compel people to testify. As such, all they have to ensure the integrity of the investigation is the honesty and cooperation of those targeted for inquiries. Maybe more than any other reason, the penalty was so harsh because they want to make an example of tech to show what happens when you don’t comply.

My question with the NCAA is:

How do you expect to take out all 8 of GT’s most prominent players 3 days before the UGA game and not expect this to be communicated to the coach? It just doesn’t add up and it sounds like the NCAA was asking DRAD to either go ahead a tell him against them, or break trust with his head football coach.

The NCAA put DRAD in a lose-lose situation and, I for one, am glad to see the GT AD put trust above taking orders from the bully.

OK, here’s a refresher course put all this in PROPER perspective.

Here’s what ESPN wrote on Friday, December 3, 2010, the day before the SEC Championship:

“Auburn quarterback Cam Newton is eligible to play in the SEC title game this weekend,
though the NCAA says his father broke rules by shopping his son to another school.”

The NCAA released its finding in a statement on Wednesday, December 1, 2010. The college sports governing body had concluded on Monday, November 29, 2010 that a violation of Newton’s amateur status had occurred. Auburn declared Newton ineligible Tuesday and requested his eligibility be reinstated.”

“Newton has been cleared by the NCAA to compete without conditions.”

“Based on the information available to the reinstatement staff at this time, we do not have sufficient evidence that Cam Newton or anyone from Auburn was aware of this activity, which led to his reinstatement,” said Kevin Lennon, NCAA vice president for academic and membership affairs. “From a student-athlete reinstatement perspective, Auburn University met its obligation. … Under this threshold, the student-athlete has not participated while ineligible.”

OK. Here it is:

NCAA made it CLEAR they had CONFIRMED AND DOCUMENTED PROOF that a
MAJOR MAJOR……….MAJOR violation had occurred involving an estimated $180,000 in a
BLATANT pay-for-play set-up.

The NCAA was ABSOLUTELY CLEAR that Cam Newton had violated his Amateur status
and was not an eligibe NCAA player. Auburn declared Newton ineligible.

And yet……….the NCAA cleared Cam Newton……….in less than 24 hours…..

to play in the SEC Championship Game and a likely future BCS Bowl game.

So now the NCAA has seen fit to slap probation on GT, for a “supposed offense”
without ANY DOCUMENTED PROOF and much circumstantial evidence
over WHO gave WHAT.

And yet, the NCAA is angered by GT lack of coopoeration??

So again, the NCAA…..HAD CONFIRMED PROOF OF A MAJOR MAJOR MAJOR violation,
and yet because the Auburn staff appeared “cooperative” by declaring Newton ineligible, the NCAA
was kind enough to turn around and in LESS THAN 24 HOURS, and reinstates Newton.

And here, we have a $312 “issue”…..for which the NCAA has produced…..NO DOCUMENTED PROOF WHATSOEVER, and yet supposedly because the NCAA didnt think GT was (ahem) “cooperative” (aka kissifn the NCAA’s azz) the NCAA slaps on 4 yeas of probabtion, $100,000 fine, and strips the ACC title.

So, one hgas to ask: So if the NCAA had DOCUMENTED PROOF that Newton was ineligible,
then wouldnt that have meant that Newton had been ineligible….ALL SEASON ??

This simple comparison between the cases of Cam Newton and GT prove beyond a
shadow of a doubt the DUPLICITY, STUPIDITY, and DISCIMINATORY PRACTICE and ENFORCEMENT by the NCAA.

And yet, the AJC, ESPN, CBS Sports, etc. have all wantonly ripped GT
without ANY consideration, comparison or review of the RECENT AND INCONSISTENT
actions by the NCAA.

Look, it doesn’t matter what the NCAA found or didn’t find or thought it was going to find. What matters is that the NCAA strongly urged Tech not to play Thomas and it chose to play him anyway. And, unless I’m mistaken, didn’t he score on a 70-yard reception in a game Tech won by five points? So I’d hardly say Tech didn’t gain some advantage by having him on the field that day. Perhaps the lesson Johnson should learn here is this one: Right or wrong, when the NCAA tells you to do something, put your ego aside and do as you’re told.

I read his explanation George and I can understand his perspective on the issue but obviously, he still made a bad call. I think he also probably got some bad advice. If I’m not mistaken, he relied on a general practice attorney for the Institute and not a compliance specialist for consultation, correct? I think he underestimate the potential fallout and didn’t give the inquiry the serious focus it deserved. Coming from LSU, I’m surprised his experience didn’t transfer in that regard but I think he mishandled this from the moment he didn’t go into information lockdown at the start. The lesson here is that every interaction with the NCAA needs to be handled with care bordering on paranoia.

SOFT. You all would love to have a coach like Paul Johnson, Les Miles, or any coach that tells it like it is or how he really feels. No coachspeak.

It’s not wonder UGA is in such a decline. That team has taken the personaility of Mark Richt and mark my words, Mark Richt is too soft to ever win a National Championship and I think most of you really know that.

Not many coaches like Paul Johnson, Erk Russell, ect. anymore. I am not even a GT fan, but I’d love for him to coach my team. I like the way he doesn’t back down and does not pander to the media.

On the other side of the coin, let’s see what UGA has to be proud of last year…

1. A drunken, whoring athletic director with red panties in his lap. Very moist panties, to be exact.

2. Fourteen players arrested. And 41% of UGA football players were arrested while they were at UGA.

3. A player suspended for violating NCAA rules.

4. Winning the Fulmer Cup for the most players arrested.

5. Winning the title of #1 party school (i.e., the most drunken student body in the USA).

6. A sleazy assistant coach who razzes opposing players, unethical coaching conduct in violation of NCAA rules.

7. A super sleazy head coach who thinks he’s a saint, but recruits thug wannabes, gangbangers, and illiterate morons.

8. A 6-7 record despite having a team full of 4- and 5-star recruits.

That’s really something to be proud of!

Regardless of whether Tech administration should have handled this differently, the punishment does not fit the crime. How can the NCAA justify this punishment over $312 and some extra tickets and act like it is ok for a father to ask for $180000 as long as the player didn’t know about it? That is just so wrong. What is the disincentive for fathers, mothers, cousins, uncles, to demand money as long as the player doesn’t know it. This is going to be a huge problem. NCAA is a dictatorship and something needs to be done.

Last time I checked anyways is that GT has had a more recent BCS showing than UGA and a conference championship. Whether they keep it or not, they won it.

GT has beaten a top 4 teams (VT in 2009), UGA has not. Paul Johnson has had more wins than UGA in the last 3 years.

There are plently of arguments.

Paul Johnson with UGA’s talent would be ridiculous. He would win big at UGA.

Start with repealing Obamacare and the stymy plan. abandon subsidies for ethanol and big oil companies and quit using so much time and fuel campaigning on taxpayer’s money..Also keep his wife at home and off the govt jets with her socializing. Back to the NCAA. they need to burn their rule book and start from scratch with more practical rules. Coach Johnson is right and you all know it! There was no violation but Tech gets four years of probation for not living up to the bylaws of the NCAA? As a graduate and season ticket holder, please appeal this penalty and get it reduced or thrown out! I have read the report and they are basing everything on Tech being on probation at the time for the 2005 action. These sleazy bureaucrats and low-life academics are waiting for another minor violation to throw the book at Tech and that’s why they put forth 4 years probation without a shred of evidence of wrongdoing! They didn’t come up with anything after wasting everyones’ time and are thoroughly embarassed! Anyone been to the IRS lately and pointed out to them that they are wrong on something! Well these people are the worst form of bureaucracy, one without oversight! Thank you to the Dawg fans for their support in this matter as one writer put it so well “If they can do this to Tech without proof of wrongdoing, will they come for us next?” Think about it folks! Does it seem strange to anyone else that the NCAA admits that the actual infractions were secondary offenses, but are upset that Tech played the players. When have players ever been declared ineligible for secondary infractions???

Seems that the NCAA wanted Tech to sit the players until they were cleared, even though no evidence existed yet that they would be declared ineligible. In other words, guilty until proven innocent. Every other case recently (read Cam Newton, etc) have gone the other way (i.e. innocent until proven guilty).

Seem the NCAA has a grudge against Tech for some reason.

They are suppose to be super smart at Tech. Lets see…the NCAA said “Dan, we are investigating you guys, whatever you do,dont tell you coaches or players because we want to interview them and we dont want you coaching them on what to say.So what do they do, Dan runs and tells the coaches who tells the players. And in this article Coach Johnson, admits that he was informed by the AD.

And you think the NCAA is just going to say ” no problem, when we tell you to do something, we are just kidding. It does not matter if you listen to us. Dan, you do whatever you want..”

The reason they were harsh has nothing to do with the $312 worth of clothes. The AD was a dumb ass for not listen to directions. Harsh…yes. Justified…Yes.

But now Tech personnel cannot let it go. Their dumb asses keep it in the news by you guessed it, talking about what they did wrong. And how not listening is the right thing to do. Yeah you win a ton of appeals by urinating in the wind.

Until someone investigates the NCAA then I have to assume they are as bad or worse than the worst of college football. USC should have been given the death penalty but money will get you out of anything these days especially with the NCAA. How can you compare USC, Reggie Bush to GT and $312 of clothing that was given back? Same penalty of vacating wins? Really that seems balanced to these guys? Get a clue, the NCAA is a show for under the table money, Tech did not pay so they flexed there muscle much like the old school mafia.

Not a TECH fan for sure. But is does seem somewhat disparate from the NCAA investigation of Ohio State. They actually knew that the players had been compensated and allowed them to play in a bowl game with penalties to be meted out in the following season. Is this about money? Tech does not represent a powerful football school, but what is fair here? I do not compare a few alleged clothing gifts and potential agent recommendations to Reggie Bush’s parents home in SoCal or cars for Buckeye players or Cam Newton’s payoff whatsoever.

It seems the NCAA (or the collegiate Gestapo) should have punished the real criminals here, not the fringe infractions.

All appeals to the NCAA should be handled by an independent arbitrator outside the NCAA and be paid from a joint fund from the NCAA and the schools so no pressure could be put on the arbitrator from either side. The NCAA is now the investigator, prosecutor and judge. This is a conlict of interest and the schools should not stand for it. The NCAA needs the schools more than the schools need them. The NCAA needs to shape up or the major conference school should form another organization to rule them (one with some common sense).

Eagle, you are missing the point. right or wrong, until something replaces it, the NCAA is the governing body of college athletics. The school received a letter saying there was an issue with a couple of players and an investigation was going to take place. We advise you to not to play said players until we make our conclusions. No, it’s not right. I understand you were three days away from playing UGA and had your ranking and the ACC title on the line……….At the end of the day, Tech chose to ignore their letter. Thus, the results.

It’s no longer confusing but rather amusing at how many GA fans (and even some GT Fans) think PJ & GT cheated.
Per Schultz’s article:

“The Tech case will go down as one of the strangest in NCAA history.

(Bud) Peterson, who was relying primarily on the advice of since-retired school counsel Randy Nordin, ultimately cleared Burnett and Thomas to play.”

The NCAA is saying, because DRAD spilled on our “secret interviews” you lose the ACC Champ, get 4 yrs prob, and a $100,000.

It would be nice if media members, including the one who authored this piece, would follow Johnson’s lead.

The NCAA is a dictatorial, corrupt organization that benefits from the labor of unpaid athletes, but treats them only marginally better than it would indentured servants.

Unfortunately, guys like the AJC columnist who wrote this are mostly shills for the NCAA, offering up outrage when some coach/athlete bends the rules set down by people who profif from those they sit in judgment of.

This entire incident is a joke. It’s laughable to use the phrase “improper benefits” when just about every dime the NCAA makes off the efforts of the players constitute a real “improper benefit.”

In the NCAA’s eyes, players are guilty until proven innocent. And even if they are innocent, if they don’t cooperate as subserviantly as the NCAA demands, they can still be sanctioned.

Tech won the ACC Championship that year. Nothing the NCAA can do can take that away.

Tech should send back the original trophy and replace it with a replica of the school’s own making. Let the NCAA do something about that.

One time, it would be nice if writers like Schultz used their finely honed outrage and sarcasm to go after the NCAA, rather than the players, coaches and administrators who have to deal with that organization’s self-appointed watchdogs.

Not holding my breath.

Look at AJ Green. $1,000 jersey sale, and he missed 4 games. However, he was honest and UGA cooperated. UGA wasn’t penalized (well, except for losing their best player for 4 games).

Also, everyone is talking about how harsh the penalties are. Are you kidding me? $100,000? Big deal. Losing the ACC Championship? It is symbolic and that is it. Everyone still recognizes USC as the champ in 2003 (or whatever the Reggie Bush year was). If the NCAA was really interested in harming GT, they would have taken scholarships away.

It doesn’t take a genius to realize that the NCAA was upset that DRAD “spilled” on its “secret interviews” after they asked him to stay mum, thus the punishment. Tech has always had a special place having grown up in Atlanta, and other than Florida my favorite school. However, PJohnson is wrong here, and should just shut up. The NCAA found dirt and if his hands were totally clean the two players in question would not have played. If there is a chance there is a problem, you don’t take that chance and you sit them. There seems to be a parallel with Johnson and Hewitt, with both doing well when they first came and then the program started down. Johnson has time to rectify that history, but something tells me he won’t. He runs an ancient offense that any big quick defense can stop and refuses to move the direction Florida did by incorporating a solid passing game to match an option run.

I think a good analogy would be this:
Auburn is driving down the highway going 50 mph over the speed limit in a stolen car.
u(sic)ga is parked on the side of the highway selling drugs with a dead hooker in the back.
And GT is going 10 over and gets pulled over. Then the cop comes and says, “Sir do you know how fast you were going?” And PJ says, “Probably 5-10 over officer, I don’t think it was a big deal.” And the officer says, “Look, I don’t have a radar gun so I can’t prove it, but I’m pretty sure you were going really fast so here’s a $100,000 fine, and we’re going to need the keys to your car.”

Yes, GT was breaking the law. Yes it is DRad and CPJ’s faults because they knowingly made a few small mistakes. But everybody goes 10 over the speed limit, so they assumed that it would be a good choice to make, so they could have the prize of getting home on time (winning the 2009 ACC title). So by saying ‘we don’t cheat,’ PJ means that under his lead, we haven’t done anything overtly wrong, we’ve merely bent the same rules everybody else does and the NCAA is being really harsh about it, which sucks balls.

Anybody who’s here merely to argue that u(sic)ga puts out all of the political leaders of this state, I hope you get elected and have to pander to a Tech student for campaign contributions some day. I expect very heartfelt and warm regards to the people who actually hold the reigns in GA.
Anybody who points out that GT folks are supposed to be smart will kindly see that none of the administration mentioned in the article graduated from GT. On the other hand, the CEO of the largest company in the world DID graduate from GT, so I wouldn’t question Tech’s ability to put out great leaders.
Anybody who claims there is a history of cheating should kindly look at what the current administration was doing separately from what past administrations did. PJ was saying that HE didn’t cheat, or gain a competitive advantage. That’s the truth.
Anybody who claims any comparison to Auburn or u(sic)ga’s level of cheating clearly has a different view of reality. Or, as Paul put it, if you claim a black book is red and we disagree, well…

Currently the NCAA has a nice plantation system working and the overseers and masters are making tons of money while the field hands get nothing. Heck, many if not most never graduate. If any group needs a union it is top flight football talent on the college level. For what its worth, most of these kids do not belong in college to begin with. Rambler, your comparison is absurd and just a bunch of hyperbole. Also, exactly how has UGA cheated? Name it. Please. AJ Green? He cheated. Not UGA. That’s why he missed games and UGA wasn’t punished. And was his infraction any different than the reported $312 deal that the Tech player received?

BTW, the difference with AJ Green and Tech issue was that while the investigation was ongoing, UGA DID NOT PLAY AJ. Tech knew and played the players anyway based upon a conversation between the AD, Coach, Legal, President of the University and compliance officer and decided instead of declaring the player(s) ineligible and then asking for immediate action or reinstatement, they went ahead and played them anyway. If they had not lost to UGA and Iowa, those games would have been forfieted too.

Paul Johnson doesn’t say something for political consumption like some coaches around here. I have no idea if the guy is religious or rightwing or leftwing all I know is he is an honest coach and if you don’t want an answer don’t ask him a question. You know when your coach is a cheater, you may not admit it but you know. You also know when your coach is honest, he is not trying to convenience you of his good character and most of these guys aren’t liked very much, because they don’t play the immuture games. Steve Spurrier is one of these guys. The press loves to stir it up with him. When you are honest you can say what you please you have no agenda. The shock here is Georgia Tech probably has one of the most clean programs in the country under Johnson. His coaching style doesn’t need the high school hot shot that come on campus and steals everybody’s stuff out of their lockers or dormrooms. He gets none or next to no support from this paper which suits all of us because we owe em nothing either. We like Johnson at Tech, we think his character is fine. He doesn’t sell out and he doesn’t call his wife on Ford commercials.

It’s nice to hear a lot of dawg fans out there who can agree to see this story for what it is… a case of the NCAA going over-board in attempt to set an example for the first target they find (it could have happened to any program, really). CPJ has attitude…I wouldn’t wanna be on his bad side, which is one of the many reasons I’m a fan!

As for the dawg fans (and others) who see this as a chance to compare programs, please shut up. UGA is SEC… GT is ACC… I grew up watching SEC football. The fact that GT holds our own w/ UGA every year is impressive enough, even if we don’t win. I can admit that historically UGA is a better football school. Simply put, if you wanna watch a bunch of skilled athletes play football, UGA does have that. If you want a well-rounded above average athletic program at a school with a top engineering program, GT wins that one. Ok, are we finished comparing now?

The NCAA was fishing for an opportunity to throw the book at someone… that is all.

Todd is just another Tech fan that doesn’t understand football. The NCAA didn’t ALLOW Ohio State players to play any more than they allowed Reggie Bush to play when he was at USC. UGA could have played AJ Green, but they would have faced disciplinary action if he was found to be ineligible. Ohio State played those players at their choice, which is why they have forfeited the Bowl win and are about to receive the death penalty (or something pretty close).

As a proud Tech fan I am pleased with his style! The best coaches I ever played for were NEVER worried about feelings…they just wanted the best out of their players. North Carolina? When Davis is fired …………….being a native son North Carolinian, CPJ might JUMP at the chance to coach the flagship North Carolina school as far as brand awareness is all over USA ……………..why not? He might then be able to win large. He now knows how tough it will be at GT to be successful on a consistent basis. He might also be fired, if they go 5-6 and 5-6 over next two years.

Until then, he has won nothing at GT. His w/l record vs a “‘down” UGA has been dreadful. It might be time for CPJ to move on if/when Butch Davis is blown away.

Oh, I didn’t understand that you were asking ME to do the comparing/contrasting.
So:
Situation 1) your ex-teammate offers you a handful of T-shirts. You may or may not have taken them. You claim not to take them. There is no proof you took them. Your coach mentions offhandedly that the NCAA is going to ask you if you took a few t-shirts. You tell them you didn’t. You get fined $100,000 and your championship ring on the assumption that you took the t-shirts that you claim not to have taken and don’t currently have, and the fact that your coach mentioned something offhandedly to you.
Situation 2) you decide on your own free will and accord to try and make money for being an athlete at your school by selling a keepsake jersey from a really memorable game for $1,000. It is very public and everybody knows you did it, so your coach sits you out for a game.

The situations aren’t particularly comparable, but you decide who was trying to make gains off of being a student athlete, and who wasn’t. Using that information, think about who you would sit out of a game and who you wouldn’t. Now think about whether the punishment fits the crime.

If you didn’t want to “punish 115 guys” for the actions of one or two, there’s an easy solution. Sit the one or two ahead of time. Then, if you win the game, you get to keep the trophy. It isn’t rocket science.

Truth of the matter is CPJ has more character than four or five of us. You will see it next year. It will translate to the players and they will be better men because of it. Another Dawg in Tech’s camp on this one. The NCAA is capricious and inept. They can’t even do their job without yahoo.com or someone doing all the homework for them. They’re just trying to bully Tech to make an example of what they want everyone to think the NCAA is capable of. Tech wasn’t trying to cheat. The people who are trying to cheat and get away with it will pull the wool over the NCAA’s eyes every time unless someone spills the beans. That’s why Auburn will get away with it. They’ve cheated and been caught too many times to leave a trail.

Johnson has put Tech in contention every year AND his offenses have been leading the nation in rushing ever since he landed in The Flats. Figure it out? Richt said it himself when facing one of PJ’s Ga. Southern teams: “The Option is the equalizer in football”. PJ will be here for years and UGA fans know it. This is an issue because the NCAA who “focuses” on promoting the term ’student-athlete’ is laying down a heavy-handed punishment for a pretty minor infraction that may not have actually happened on a very academically focused school that is has a program full of illiterate criminals to the east and a program that lies and cheats to the west, and neither of them have gotten busted.

I do and will always like Coach Johnson. I appreciate what he did at the Naval Academy and Ga. Southern and I hope he goes 11 and 1 at Tech every year. And I also dislike the NCAA and my feelings comes from Coach Ron Polk’s stance on the limited number of scholarships allowed in college baseball. It is definitely the most discriminated collegiate sport. But I do not believe the NCAA would have come down as hard if somebody in leadership would have shown some leadership. Somebody dropped the ball at Tech. Also I don’t care if 115 busted their tails it doesn’t take but one selfish individual to ruin it for everybody. If you broke rules you broke rules. But like I said the leadership was not there.

When your friends pull down what many Tech alum do, they don’t feel too bad about giving you $312. A certain executive (I won’t say who so as not to sound ‘insecure’) took myself, my girlfriend, my roommate, and some of our family to a dinner that probably cost well over $312 after a game just this past football season. One of my coworkers bought another about $200 of single barrel bourbon. I would say a handful of t-shirts wasn’t an issue.

And if you ever speak to PJ, you’ll understand what I mean about offhanded. He says everything how he sees it, with about the same emphasis. That’s actually probably what he said (in your comment dbldawg).

I am not a Tech fan, and certainly not a UGA fan, but reading this blog shows one thing. UGA fans (not all of them, but a large majority who post here) are the most delusional, immature, uneducated, spiteful blowhards in the history of the world. You make the ancient Romans look shy and bashful about conquering what was then the known world! You guys have not hardly won squat in almost thirty years, yet you act so high and mighty. I am a big fan of both Coach Richt and Coach Johnson. I admire both of them, though they are completely differnt type men. Even if you UGA guys are only high school graduates, you should still see that the NCAA is wrong in this situation. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a great college rivalry, but you guys take it to an incredibly vindictive level. Would you ever say these type things to a person’s face or are you just a bad a** behind your keyboard? Grow up!

By the way, I have complete admiration for CPJ standing up to the tyranny of the NCAA, for his players, his program, and his institution. Would you not have the same admiration if it was your coach?

[...] “I’m proud of what those guys did on the field — they won it on the field,” Johnson said. “The NCAA can’t take away the memories or what happened on the field. Let’s say somebody took something illegal. I’m still not convinced that happened, but let’s say it did. Well, you’re punishing 115 guys who didn’t do anything but work their butt off.” [...]

Instead, the man sticks up for his school and those players that layed it all out there in 2009. The NCAA has it’s priorities completely upside down on this. This is not even in the same universe as what happened at USC, Ohio State, Auburn, and soon to be discovered at Oregon.

Paul Johnson has sent a message to the NCAA that this is wrong on so many levels. Georgia Tech will not win the appeal, but by fighting back so vehemently will ensure that the NCAA thinks twice about such frivolous “investigations” in the future.

‘65 dawg, Tech went off that probation in ‘07.
The NCAA is absolutely petty. College football needs to dismantle the NCAA.
The SEC, ACC, Big 12, & Pac 12, & Big 10 or 12 need to drop out of the NCAA.
They are about 50% of Division 1 football teams. Presidents of colleges don’t have
the guts. Penalties should fit the “crime”. Even our society’s criminal system
has better balance/credibility. Penalties usually fit the crime and there are
guidelines that judges go by. Seemingly the NCAA can do whatever it wishes.
Crush student athletes, coaches, administrators, and college fans, for petty
reasons. That’s way too much power. The NCAA needs to be taken down
a notch or dismantled.
There are around(assuming 175 student athletes per BCS college)21,000 student athletes
under the jurisdiction of the NCAA. Add all of the smaller colleges and you get very large student
athlete population. Once an investigation starts, the student athletes in quesiton should be innocent
until proven guilty.
Also, I’ll bet the NCAA investigators all graduated charm school and never let their egos interfere
with their approach to advising a college of possible infractions. And, I’ll bet the NCAA investigators
don’t let the facts interfere with their opinions.
This vast number of athletes don’t have an ‘offset’ for the NCAA. They have no voice in these matters.
It’s all between the college administrators and the NCAA(a dictatorship). The student athletes need
representation of some kind. Sure, they get a scholarship of some kind–after that they have no say. Student athletes are a population that can easily be taken advantage of, by agents, colleges,
the NCAA, and others.
In the military it is an axiom that 10% ‘don’t get the word’. College coaches and administrators
are working diligently to get the word out to all student athletes about the rights & wrongs in
the eyes of the NCAA. Do they all get the word or do they all understand it? Probably not.
So, it’s a human nature thing that the the NCAA can penalize as they see fit. It’s kind of like
trying to legislate the weather. The NCAA must be so very proud to be the top pettifogger
in college sports.

After Rad told CPJ about the investigation who do you think rehearsed the accused for their upcoming meetings with the NCAA.(That is why the NCAA told Rad NOT to tell CPJ) Probably wasn’t CPJ but we really don’t know do we? Maybe he had someone do it for him. Maybe not.

I’m not sure how $300 worth of clothes(One cheap suit or tw dozen pair of underware was worth all the thousands spent on the investigation but rules are rules and they must be obeyed regardless of how stupid they might be and CPJ didn’t help GT’s situation for possible future run ins with the NCAA. Vince, I appreciate your count. My count looked a little more skewed against Tech, but the dawgs were a pretty even split for/against in what we see to be as a pretty obvious deal. Sure we’re biased, but the comments of Tech fans against uga were probably based on 1) more tech fans here (an article about our coach) 2) more tech fans here (the internet) 3) assuming that the unintelligible and downright retarded comments came from uga fans, which is often the case, and possibly 4) years of having to defend a football program that actually has student-athletes as we (in recent history) lose to a football team that has criminal-athletes.

A friend of mine played for Bobby Dodd, and he told of how Dodd would talk to the team at the start of every season — saying “if you ever do anything to disgrace the name of Georgia Tech, I will personally cut your (insert favorite body part here) off”. The veins on his neck would stick out, he was so passionate. Quit skirting the rules, and quit disgracing the name of Georgia Tech. Let’s start being like we’re supposed to be.

Enough about this garbage already!!!! File an appeal, then just let it go. The past is the past, we lost NO scholarships and haven’t in any way been banned from post-season, so who gives a rat’s rear what some NCAA punks want to rule. We have a new season coming up REAL soon, and the NCAA douchebags have been kind enough to provide us with enough motivational material for a decade. Trust me, the ACC is going to have to deal with one SERIOUSLY pissed off team of Yellow Jackets this year!!
As an aside though, why hasn’t more been made of the fact that GT contacted the ACC for guidance and Swofford/the ACC said that D. Thomas was eligible and to go ahead and play him! And according to the report, someone from the NCAA headquarters told them the same thing — go ahead and play him. Now they want to slam us for doing what they said to do?
Yep, lots of motivation to to put a hurtin’ on some people this season!!!!!!!!

What did I prove?

I was reacting to a challenge by a Tech fan. George Stein made a derogatory comment about UGA fans and how they were overwhelmingly on this blog enjoying Tech’s problems. I stated that most comments I read from UGA fans were in support of Tech….something I know would not happen if the situation was in reverse. That fan suggested I go back and read the entire blog…..so I did…and I took count.

I was right! Most UGA fans expressed comments that sided with Coach Johnson and Tech in this situation. What I didn’t expect (but should have) was the overwhelming number of vitriolic comments from Tech fans about UGA….so I started counting those too, after page two.

Sorry Paul, it doesn’t work that way. If you say the NCAA is punishing 115 guys for what one kid did, then you can just as easily say, if 20 cheated, that they’re punishing 95 guys who don’t deserve it. Where do you draw the line? 5 cheaters? 10? 20?

No, that fact is that everyone knows the rules and the potential consequences of failing to abide by them. As we can plainly see from what’s going on at Ohio State, UNC, Oregon, Auburn, etc., cheating is rampant in college football today. The only it’s ever going to stop is if the NCAA starts coming down like a load of bricks on programs that are caught breaking the rules.

While I have sympathy for the GT team and for Coach Johnson and his staff, who put together a great season in 2009, it is entirely right and proper that they be stripped of their ACC title and be required to return their championship trophy.

Both the ACC and somebody from the NCAA said that they were NOT ineligible, and that was back before the games in question were ever played. That has not changed. That being the case, EVERY player on the Tech team is being punished for what NOBODY did wrong. You call that justice???

Timing is everything in life and GT is very unlucky with this issue. The NCAA has the hammer and OSU,UT and soon to be Auburn will get the full dose. Auburn will be the last because that program will be the example to college football about what you can expect if you decide to take the auburn path. Just hold on GT fans and take a deep breath and allow the NCAA to complete their process. The you can appeal and get some relief but don’t start that process now if you’re smart. Need not think LSU is done with the NCAA either because this is just phase I for the Tigers. This street agent deal is going to explode. When this is all complete the SEC will be getting blasted by the rest of the country for all the cheating and Slive will get a lot of the blame for how it let it unfold last year even though the AU lawyers had both the NCAA and the SEC over a barrel….at that time. That time is over and it will soon be AU’s turn in that barrel and they will have a better understanding of what “ALL IN” really means. They deserve what they shall reap.

As stated earlier, I think the punishment is way over the line, but to say that no one did anything wrong is incorrect. Did you read the report?

The compliance officer was told not to speak to anyone about the investigation other than the university president and the athletics director. Instead, he told Coach Johnson. Johnson and a team then interviewed the athletes. This compromised the integrity of the investigation. Furthermore, the NCAA told Tech that the players COULD be ruled ineligible at a later date and that they might want to consider not playing them. They played them anyway.

Investigators also noticed a difference in their first and second interviews with the players and decided they could have been coached in giving their answers.

So, I side with Tech (as hard as it is to get that phrase out of my mouth), but tell me honestly: Would you do the same for Georgia?

Vince, I didn’t say NOBODY did anything wrong. I said none of the players did anything wrong. Obviously DRAD and his counsel didn’t do exactly what was right (read my post from 7:15PM though if you want to see how absurd the NCAA rules are). So I have no problem (other than the logic behind it) with the 100K penalty or maybe even the 4-year probation. But even though the NCAA said the players MIGHT YET be charged with some kind of violation, SOMEBODY in both the NCAA offices and the ACC offices, said they were NOT ineligible. Also, read the transcripts of the interviews and tell me you think they sounded coached in their responses. They sounded like typical kids not knowing what the hell was going on to me. If that was the result of being coached, then whoever coached them is either the best on earth or the worst. As far as the argument about Dooley going to Auburn in the 50s, you are exactly right, but by the same logic what possible connection could there be between CPJ having been at Auburn (which I don’t think is correct) and what’s going on at either Tech or Auburn now?

CPJ: Oh? Why is that? What happened?
DRAD: Paul, I can’t tell you. Just accept the fact that they can’t play.
CPJ: But are they sick, or has there been a death in their families?
DRAD: Paul, I can’t tell you. Just accept the fact that they can’t play.
CPJ: So they don’t even know about it yet, and I’m supposed to tell them.
DRAD: No, you can’t tell them. Just accept the fact that they can’t play.
CPJ: But what am I supposed to say to them?

Secondly, and I know you won’t agree with me on this, but Tech’s fans are so very…..over the top…with their hatred of UGA. They beat them in a game and suddenly they are national championship contenders and UGA stinks.

That tearing up the turf story is one that the Auburn folks have dreamed up and want you to believe. The hoses were actually turned on people in the stands who were celebrating a victory and the stadium staff wanted them to leave. The turf idea came up YEARS later.

Well, they turned on the sprinklers, as I remember, and that hit the ones on the field first. Then they turned them on the fans in the endzone, I assume with the logic of keeping them there. There was an older couple at my church who got soaked and were totally pissed. I can understand that, but the fact is that there were people on the field digging up the turf. Auburn did wrong by hosing the stands, but some of you fans did wrong by digging up the turf.

@Vince: The real reason GT fan doesn’t play nice with UGA fan

It’s real simple Vince – why GT fans sooooo despise Joe Blow Bullpup fan. Growing up in the ATL and ever since I can remember at school, at church, hanging out with friends, one is easily inundated with all things Georgia. Since you have proven to be very good at counting, take this survey – look at how many stories there are on UGA in the AJC vs. that for Tech. This stems from UGA pumping out a bunch of Journalism majorsly whom invariably find themselves working for the newspaper. Continue the test and count the number of Georgia “G” license plates you see. There has always been a natural bias for Georgia and it is foolish to say otherwise. So when you wonder why GT fan has a hard time with UGA fan, just look how this is a story about Tech, yet there are a large number of UGA fans chiming in and giving their two cents. Gotta love this rivalry.

I like the fact that I don’t follow the herd. It’s easy to root for UGA – it’s the status quo for sure. I like the fact that I’m a Tech fan and I always will be. So when Tech wins Vince, GT fans can revel in the fact that they might just get Mr. Dawg fan to shut up – if only for a brief moment. Hope that clears it up for you.

No good reason to support a loser program other than TRYING to be “different” . Like junkie looking piercings and tramp stamp tatoos … they don’t end up being “different” because their is a HUGE crowd of losers who think( and look) JUST LIKE THEM .

That would be all well and good IF the people who decide to identify with mediocrity didn’t then turn around and get p*ssed off that the program they “love” is primarily one built by losers , run by losers and cheered on by ….. losers .

Be glad that all the GT got was a slap on the wrist fine and was asked to return some trophy for “winning” a conference that isn’t worth bragging about being in to begin with .

Your ideological brethren at AsteriskU have bought themselves a mountain of trouble for a once in six decade shot for their loser fanbase to see what it feels like to win an NC … even temporarily … It won’t be long before you are looking back at what happened to GT and saying … “At least we didn’t get donkey punched like Auburn” ;-)

Next to Erk he’s the best Coach I have ever played for. So for all you people insulting him when you have no clue what your talking about. Dear Eagle :

Paul – punch UGA fans in the face – Johnson, with the 1 horse pony offense best-suited for a division other than 1-A whose only weapon on offense is the illegal chop block in his high school offense, should have told Dan Radakovich that Dan cannot tell Paul about The NCAA investigation. Paul Johnson knows this. Therefore that is prima facia – cheating. He purposely told his players, then, in an attempt to cover-up. If Georgia tek appeals, the Committee on Infractions will absolutely put a show cause on Paul Johnson, and part of that will because he said today that The NCAA is punishing 115 players for what he, Paul, did. He and Dan Radakovich.

Georgia tek has always been sanctimonious in their comments about their wrong-doings and so as a direct result now, they are serving back-to-back repeat offender NCAA PROBATIONS in football.

Did you get that Mr. Eagle ?

But after the first security person was down and bleeding from the head, your crowd got EXACTLY what it deserved after it was told repeatedly to (1) leave the field and (2) exit the stadium

When your people act out of control, they deservedly get hosed down. DEAL WITH IT.

Some of you really need to learn reading comprehension skills. CPJ talked to Burnett, who was exonerated, not Thomas. Thomas was interviewed first so there is no way you can say anybody on the GT staff tainted that interview. By the way it is the worst interview I have ever seen. GT checked with the NCAA and was told they were cleared to play and to date there is zero concrete evidence to say anybody on that team took anything from an agent. I will agree that the water is dirty, but if the NCAA rules players eneligible for that then Cam Newton never should have taken the field. GT should be punished for what general counsel and DRad did, it is just to harsh a punishment as it stands now. Even if the title is still vacated the probation should be reduced. Time will tell what the NCAA will do to all the other programs out there, but in my humble opinion they have just further proven that they have no control and no checks and balance system.

It’s obvious that virtually nobody in here has a clue what a chop block is. Erk’s Eagles came close; Schmeckdawg got it. CPJ doesn’t use chop blocks, although Beamer at VT would disagree, and has. CPJ uses CUT blocks, which are 100% LEGAL. For clarity, in the simplest terms possible…..A cut block (legal) is a below-the-waist block on the line. A chop block (illegal) is a below-the-waist block on the line while being blocked by someone else. The difference in the blocks are whether you are taking on someone at the same time. If you are being blocked and are cut by someone else, that’s a chop block.

SamJ,
That is one of my favorite parts about this. If I am reading it all correctly the NCAA comes in and interviews Thomas then says do not tell anybody. They return and interview up to eight more people, pulling players from practice to do so and in some way thought that the coach did not need to know and I assume that they believed the players would not talk amongst each other. What you gonna do the NCAA is ruining collge football and the owners/players are ruining the NFL. Here’s an example of both from (academically ineligible) U(sic)GA senior football player Caleb King:

DRAD: Paul, you can’t tell them anything. They and you just need to accept the fact that they can’t play

First of all the NCAA investigator requested that D Rad not tell anybody besides the President, he (D Rad) never said he would or he wouldn’t. I love watching Tech’s arrogance get in the way of their own success and they are too prideful to make the necessary adjustments to become more successful.

Tech has made a history our of acting like they are better than everyone else when it is apparent to everyone but them that they are not as good.

Tech reminds me of today’s teenages who feel entitled what the world has to offer although they certainly have done nothing to earn it on the field in the last 60 years. I know – 1990 – an orange bowl victory over nebraska who was playing a second string qb due to injury. And colorado still got a share of that crown.

However the ACC championship was clinched using the services of an ineligible player. What’s more, Johnson, Radakovich & Peterson warned players in advance of an ongoing investigation in advance — in clear disregard of the instructions of the NCAA.

As for his comment about “they came in and talked to 7 or 8 kids and didn’t find what they were looking for” — so what? That’s not how most violations are uncovered. Most violations are uncovered by looking for one thing and finding something else.

Forget D. Thomas.

Ted Striker, unless CPJ “coached” the players on what to say during the interviews (and if you read the transcript of the interview with Thomas, it’s pretty clear he wasn’t “coached”) then he is not guilty of anything, nor did he mess up. If Thomas, Morgan, or whoever, were held out of games, what the hell were they supposed to be given as a reason? Was DRad simply supposed to say, “Paul, you can’t play them; don’t ask questions”? There may be some stupid bylaw that says that DRad wasn’t supposed to tell anybody, but what else could he do? IMHO, this all just defies logic.

@vince (July 20th, 2011, 10:21 am) been a season ticket holder since 1985. Was at the 1986 game and the 2010 game (and all in-between).

1986 – You stink and you got wet because you and your sorry fellow fans were destroying Auburn property and throwing objects at security personnel on the field. PERIOD. FACT. END OF STORY. When asked to leave an area by those enforcement personnel in charge of that area, my recommendation to you in the future? LEAVE. If you want to stay, sing songs, throw whiskey bottles and cups, and destroy property, then you damn well get what you deserve.

2010 – Nick Fairley speared Aaron Murray in the back. That was cheap.. That was wrong. That was PENALIZED ON THE FIELD. What you have a problem with is, like present day UGA fans, you have a coaching staff and team full of wusses. They couldn’t handle Nick Fairley. They couldn’t block him. And that’s why Saint Mark ordered the Code Red on Nick Fairley. Because he couldn’t handle him either. And if you’ve got a problem with some scraping, grabbing, squeezing, and jabbing while on the field from one player to another, I guess you are too young to have watched ol’ Erks Junkyard Dawg defenses back in the 1970’s and 1980’s who left opposing players laying on the field bleeding. They weren’t accomplishing those things through tender loving care, brother.

hornblowemg, maybe you had better read the following —– A crack block or crack back block is when an offensive player starts out wide and comes in to block a defender who is unaware of his presence. The crack is normally preformed by a wide receiver or slot. A crack block is normally executed when a team wants to run to the edge. If a team wants to toss to the outside the wide receiver will run at the outside shoulder of the outside linebacker. As long as contact is made above the waist and to the player’s front it is legal. Defensive backs are taught to alert the interior defenders by yelling crack. This block can be a de-cleater if your wideout is tough enough. Many teams put the crack blocker in motion towards the formation prior to the snap also.

Nothing illlegal at all about that nor the way Tech executes it. If Gamble got hurt as a result of a crack-back block, then that’s just tough. Getting hit on a LEGAL hit or block is part of the game, and getting hurt is one of the possible consequences.

You said, however, that the mutts have figured out Tech’s offense, as evidenced by 9 out of 10 wins, when, in fact, Tech has only run this offense for 3 years. And in all 3 games since CPJ arrived, the mutts have yet to “figure out” Tech’s offense or contain it, and win or lose, I GUARANTEE you that you won’t this year either. And you also said that EVERYBODY has it figured out now and will stop it. On what do you base that opinion (again certainly not a fact)? Name me one team who has figured out CPJ’s offense in the 25 years in which he has been running it. Just because one of his teams loses a game or more does not mean that the offense was “figured out.” It simply means that the other team was better, at least on that given day. But YOU stated that the mutts have “figured out” CPJ’s offense, as evidenced by 9 out of the past 10 games. CPJ has only been at Tech for 3 years, and Tech has only been running his offense for those 3 years. The 7 losses prior to that have absolutely nothing to do with the mutts’ figuring out anything regarding CPJ’s offense. In those past 3 games, however, the mutts have yet to show any ability whatsoever to stop Tech on offense, regardless of the outcome of the games. And you also said that everybody has now figured out Tech’s offense and it will no longer work. Do you realize that CPJ has been using this same offense for 25 years, and nobody has yet “figured it out.” That doesn’t mean, and shouldn’t mean, that CPJ has won every game he has coached in that time. And none of those losses meant that the other team had “figured out” his offense. Anything can happen in a given game, and the winner is always the better team on the field on that day. And yes, I realize that means that I think that the mutts were the better team on the field in both 2009 and 20010, although not really the better team either year. Similarly, in 2008, I believe that the Jackets were the better team on the field that day, although not actually the better team overall. The fact is that in none of those 3 games were the mutts able consistently to stop Tech’s offense. They haven’t “figured out” anything, nor has anybody else, and win or lose, the mutts won’t be able to stop the offense this year either. You can bet the house on that.

@Supersize that order: Those 7 years prior to CPJ coming to GT were spent preparing for CPJ’s Middle School offense since we anticipated his hiring by GT. Notice how much it has paid off?

@Supersize that order: You are wrong as usual. The reason UGA won 2 out of 3 is we scored more points than GT. That is why they keep score because in the end a win is really all that matters.

Your Coach “Cheesenick” has really stepped in it now because he smart-mouthed the NCAA rep. Not that they don’t already have enough to give your cow college the DEATH PENALTY.

Brainiac, of course you won two out of three because you scored more points. DUHHH, that’s a nobrainer. I never said you didn’t score more points or that you didn’t win. I said that in all 3 of the years CPJ had been at Tech, the mutts still haven’t stopped. And remember, Tech won in 2008 because we scored more points too. And, as I said before, this year, the mutts STILL won’t be able to stop Tech’s offense. The deciding point of the game, as it was in 2009 and 2010, will be whether Tech’s defense can prevent the mutts from scoring more points. That, as I am sure you realize, remains to be seen. But, since the Tech defense cannot be any worse than it has been, and I truly believe we have the personnel now to do it, I predict that Tech will win…..that is, score more points than the mutts.

Brainiac, if the mutts spent 7 years preparing for CPJ’s offense, then pray tell, why have you not yet stopped it? Just because you won 2 out of 3 (i.e., scored more points) doesn’t mean you stopped the offense. That preparation doesn’t seem to have paid off in that sense of the word. And “Choke” doesn’t have a clue; never has and never will.

Haven’t read AJC sports comments in a couple years; good to know that UGA posters are as obnoxious as ever. Calling people nerds just reveal that you are forever stuck your glory days back in high school. At least there are some UGA fans that can be objective enough to agree that the NCAA is being a pompous institution with regards to Tech’s “violations.” Tell it like it is PJ!

Coach Moobs is just mad that they got caught cheating. This guy is equally the scumbag as the institute of crime that is Ga. Yech. Both need to be banned from college sports forever. So shameless and embarrassing, but that is Yech for you. No honor, anything-to-win mentality yet they never do. Karma is hilarious sometimes.

I guess the NCAA figures Tech is so pathetic they will never land any real talent or ever make it back to a real bowl anyway. At best they will be back at the Smurf Bowl where they belong so they can be used as a punching bag by the mighty WAC.

CPJ is protecting his ID or his brand of cleanliness as HC at a so called mid-lower school and conference. He has to do that ……………. he knows that HE COULD BE DAMAGED by this all when or if another school like North Carolina comes calling after they DUMP Butch Davis and his ilk.

I am sure that CPJ’s attorney suggested to “get out fron on this” and “publically slam the NCAA, as you could get pulled under by all of the swirling noise and smoke.”

No, CPJ has no choice, otherwise his resume will be as dirty as his predecessor’s, O’Leary the resume liar. No, lately with phony HC credentials on resumes and now with this LATEST NCAAA scandal at GT, he has to project independently from it all.

No, CPJ is just now trying to survie until another lower level program comes calling, like S Mississippi or Memphis U or maybe College of Charleston or Elon or maybe Davidson.

Afterall, CPJ”s record has no accomplishments after 3 full years and THAT IS WHAT has him worried from a careeer standpoint. GT has torpedoed him with this NCAA scandal, through no fault of his own. He is a troubled man.

Coach is absolutely right. If anyone other than 2 or 3 NCAA dimwits think that Tech is not the 2009 ACC champ, please stand up. Some have said that Tech needs a better PR team. No. The NCAA is the institution that needs a better PR program. It has lost much of its clout to the BCS organization and if not careful will become insignificant.

Coach Moobs is just angry that it is loud and clear he is the most overrated coach in America and his high school offense cannot work with the big boys, well, the ACC. Not only that, but his cheating tactics have been caught, finally, and even more armor has fallen off this deadbeat of a coach. Yech will yet again fire another coach and start anew only to end up with the same exact fate as they always do, that being LOSERS and CHEATS.
