Punishment severe, but Georgia Tech made its own mess

There are a number of disturbing words that can be found in an NCAA news release. Booster. Agent.  Academic fraud. The dreaded string: Lack of institutional control.

But this one ranks as one of the most troublesome: Manipulate.

If you believe the NCAA, Georgia Tech officials not only failed to cooperate with an investigation into possible impermissible benefits, they impeded, obstructed and tossed up road blocks.

The public infractions report reads like it was crafted by a performance-enhanced novelist. Claims that Tech attempted to “manipulate the information surrounding potential violations.” Claims that the school “hindered efforts to get to the truth.” Claims that former general counsel Randy Nordin, “adopted an obstructionist approach” to the investigation and referred to an NCAA staff member as “demonstratively untruthful.”

Maybe some of that is blather. But too much of it is truth.

Tech and its athletic department were slapped Thursday. They deserved to be.

While a case certainly can be made that the punishment is excessive – the Yellow Jackets effectively were stripped of their only ACC football championship in 2009 because one player received $312 worth of merchandise more than 20 months ago – a better case can be made that they had it coming.

Sorry. But a school whose title includes the words “Institute of Technology” should know how to read a manual.

Jackets coach Paul Johnson just lost his 2009 ACC title. (Johnny Crawford/AJC)

Jackets coach Paul Johnson lost his ACC title. (Johnny Crawford/AJC)

In 2005, Tech went on two years’ probation because it used 17 athletes in four sports (11 in football) that it should have ruled academically ineligible. It lost scholarships and was forced to vacate rules. Now it has been hit with four years’ probation in football and basketball, fined $100,000 and must vacate records from the last three games of the 2009 football season (including the ACC title-game win over Clemson) because it acted stupidly when confronted with charges of using an ineligible player (Demaryius Thomas) and having a former basketball grad assistant involved with an on-campus AAU tournament.

Tech president G.P. “Bud” Peterson and athletic director Dan Radakovich both largely disputed the findings of the NCAA. (Tech had an official 53-page response to a 26-page infractions report.) But they were remorseful and Radakovich even apologized to the football team for the lost ACC title.

Paul Parker, the Jackets’ compliance officer at the time of the infractions, left the school in April to take a job at (ironically) Auburn. Radakovich did not publicly place any blame on Parker. But neither he nor Peterson were as kind to the school’s former counsel, Nordin, who has since retired.

“Perhaps we should’ve done some things differently,” Peterson said. “He didn’t have a great deal of experience in issues like this, and I believe if we had to do this all over again we would’ve hired an outside consultant to advise us and serve as legal counsel.”

He also cited the NCAA report saying that Nordin failed to inform the players of the consequences for lying. “Someone who had the experience working with the NCAA would know that’s their expectation,” Peterson said.

Actually, that seems more like common sense.

So is this: When the NCAA told Peterson and Radakovich not to inform anybody in the football program that an investigation was coming, that wasn’t merely a suggestion. But Radakovich told coach Paul Johnson. It trickled down from there. Radakovich said he never intended to influence the investigation, but he admitted it was a mistake.

Tech’s hearing took place at the worst possible time: the off week before the Georgia game, two weeks before the ACC championship. Thomas, a wide receiver, and safety Morgan Burnett both were the focus of the investigation into the football team. The Jackets rolled the dice. That was a mistake. (Georgia, in a similar situation last year, held out A.J. Green in the season opener before the NCAA suspended him four games for “Jerseygate.”)

Peterson was led to believe the players were innocent. He now says the school should have at least declared Thomas ineligible and then appeal for his immediate reinstatement. (Thomas denied the clothes were given to him by former Tech player Calvin Booker, whom the NCAA considers a runner for an agent. There were no findings with Burnett, but the NCAA blames Tech for letting the players know that investigators were going to ask them questions.)

It all may seem way too convoluted and the punishment too severe for what the NCAA admits ultimately could be a secondary infraction. But the mess is Tech’s doing.

“We could’ve done better,” Peterson said.

A tough lesson to learn.

You, sir, have no idea what you’re talking about and I’d suggest you get all the facts before you pass judgement. For example, would it matter to you if the facts showed that as soon as the players discovered the items were provided by a friend of an agent, they were immediately returned?

It seems that the NCAA is busy destroying its own brand and integrity. How many champions are being “stripped” of their title? How many programs have had some sanction or broken some rule in the past decade? Most, likely. The state of the NCAA is rotten. And, it starts from within.

They either have rules that are not enforceable, members that view compliance as a barrier or players who don’t care. Either way it is out of control. And the NCAA is determined to maintain control. Even if they continue to erode the integrity of the games.

From ESPN:

“A source told ESPN’s Joe Schad that as part of the case, the NCAA investigated the relationship between former Georgia Tech quarterback Calvin Booker, who is alleged to have worked for a sports agent, and wide receiver Demaryius Thomas, now of the Denver Broncos.

“The source said Thomas received $312 worth of clothing from the friend of a sports agency employee. Thomas was used in the final three games of that season, including the ACC title game and the Orange Bowl.”

I’m about to cancel my subscription to the AJC after Bradley’s and Schultz’s commentaries. There is a huge difference between deciding to sit out a player for the first game and having to decide whether to sit out players during the three biggest games of the season. The NCAA is ridiculous.

The clothes being returned or not is not the point of the NCAA punishment. The point is Tech obstructed the investigation.

See my earlier post re the Nixon administration: the big crime there was not the break-in but obstruction of justice during the cover-up.

UGA did the correct thing with A J Green last year. Tech should have done the same with their player.

Colleges are today recruiting players who take “free stuff” without hesitation. See Green at UGA (sold jersey to agent type) Ohio State (free stuff) and now Tech (free stuff). Stop recruiting the players or suspend the players that break/bend the rules.

Someone allegedly received some clothes from perhaps his cousin or his cousin’s friend. The punishment will be reduced upon appeal, as the NCAA has little evidence to back up its own case. Then again, the same NCAA that got PO’ed at how Tech handled the investigation is the same NCAA that will ultimately decide the merit of any appeal. Must be nice to have your cake and eat it too.

Georgia sits A.J. Green and the NCAA, in effect, trashes its season. I’ve often wondered why Edward Tolley didn’t tell A.J. to plead the fifth when they asked for his bank records. I guess that would have landed the Dawgs in the NCAA doghouse. Tech rolls the dice with Thomas and Burnett and gets a lost trophy that everybody knows it won and a $100,000 fine. If the best the NCAA can do to solve this problem is to take it out on their constituent schools and their players, it is doomed to failure.

You would think with the punishment handed down that the NCAA believes Tech intentionally cheated. There is no evidence that is true, or even a suggestion of it. Tech was sloppy, just like they were 10 years ago. This is ridiculous. They should be punished, but it shouldn’t even approach this level. This is a football factory punishment, and Tech clearly isn’t a football factory.

Jeff – I can’t disagree with the basic premise of your post. GT took a situation with a minor problem and converted it into a disaster. It sounds like a bad case of “institutional arrogance” to me. Faced with NCAA questions, other schools (UNC for one) have hired people with experience in dealing with NCAA investigations. Did 1990 never happen?

There’s no denying that Tech screwed up but it’s pretty clear to me that the NCAA is using this case as an example so when they give Ohio St a comparative slap on the wrist (for much more egregious acts) they can point at it and say “this is what happens when you cooperate and this is what happens when you don’t cooperate”. It’s telling that the NCAA goes out of their way to say that the actual player-related violations were only secondary.

I’m upset that Tech doesn’t know how to handle these situations, but then we dont have as much practice as some other schools, and we probably don’t have an ex-NCAA lawyer on staff. If this went down the way it’s reported, Tech should take it’s punishment and figure out how to respond to the NCAA.
But there’s a part of me that’s more and more pissed about the direction of college football, and the actions of the NCAA. Void a championship? $100K? At a school like Tech that doesn’t have that many championships to its name and to whom $100K is a big deal? All over poor judgment and $318 in clothes? Give me an f%&*ing break. NCAA can afford to hammer Tech because it’s fans don’t pay the bills. Hammering Tech doesn’t damage the brand. No way this happens to half the SEC or Big10, or TX OU, USC… The NCAA is gutless and inconsistent. They have egg on their face for being slow to discipline Tenn, USC, OSU, so they butch up going after a school that doesn’t have attention of 99% of college football fans. The fans for the big schools pay the bills…the other 100 teams don’t matter
Way to go NCAA…you really handed it to the crooks this time.

Maybe Tech Alumni will wake up and realize that their push to hire Dan Radakovich was a mistake. Dan will use Tech as a stepping stone to a bigger job. He doesn’t really care about Tech. Much of this is his doing… he blabbed when he should have had the integrity and discipline to keep his mouth shut. The penalty is actually more bark than bite, but it is embarrassing for anybody who graduated for Tech. We stand for much more than this. Dan’s legacy will be the following:

- a plan to improve athletic facilities that called for the Athletic Department to borrow enough money to choke a donkey.
- poor treatment of Danny Hall (the only perennial winning coach at Tech) and Wes Durham (an institution in his profession).
- letting Paul Hewitt hang around too long.
- hiring Paul Johnson (the jury is still out on this one).

If you have poor judgment on the NCAA issue, you will have poor judgment on other things. Many of these poor decisions are starting to smell….

This is absolutely laughable. The only way it could be any better is if the NCAA gave the ACC title to UNC. The Oregon “Phil Knight” Ducks and Auburn “Cam’s our man (for 240K)” Tigers are still the 2010 pac-10 and national champions respectively, and their coaches were both intimately involved in the dissemination of improper benefits several orders of magnitude greater than someone receiving 300 dollars in clothes (and then returning them from whence they came, which you failed to mention). Butch Davis is still employed and UNC hasn’t received any penalties, and he essentially knowingly employed an agent in a coaching position.

Schultz, you are a buffoon. You’re mortgaging your journalistic integrity for stirring the pot and generating page views… all signs that the AJC has been relegated to the fishwrap category of print news. The fact that some nebulous governing body is making an attempt to charge a state institution 100 thousand dollars (!) with a paper tiger argument should anger real journalists, and not at some kid who received and gave back 300 bucks worth of clothes, but at the idiots in suits running this sham. If we did the wrong, we have to pay the price, no matter how painful or over-reaching it seems. Don’t know all the facts, but from here it looks like DRad screwed GT over on this one. (If they tell you not to tell anybody, follow their instructions!)

I’m not going to make any negative UGA comments or point at anyone else. The administration and coaches better get their act together or they are going to have a hard time re-gaining our trust.

If any of you would take the time to read Bud’s letter to the NCAA, you would see that we were perfectly right in playing Thomas. We based it on 1). An internal investigation. 2). Outside legal counsel that assured us there was no standing (the guy was his cousin!). 3). We passed the information along to the ACC and they assured us that there was little to no chance he could be declared ineligible. The allegation was basically recognized as being the BS it was, and we played him. Upon appeal this will definitely be overturned.

Drad contacted Johnson because the NCAA investigators arrival was immanent and Johnson needed to set up an appointment between the young men and the investigators. When Johnson set them up he told them they better tell the truth. How insidious!

But don’t let facts and that reading thing y’all have such a hard time with get in the way of a good time! The NCAA needed to make an example of somebody. Notice how quickly all of this happened. One of my best friends went to GT while Kenny Anderson was there and talked about how he only showed up on test days and would fill out the scantron answer sheet before the test was handed out…..face it…..a lot happens in big-time college athletics………for all we UGA fans know, we will be hit next month……the point is that it goes on EVERYWHERE….just keep that in mind next month when one of our young, college kids gets cited for that horrendous offense of minor in possession of alcohol.

This is both KARMA and “poetic justice” for the geeky-nerd-loser-douchebag segment of the GT fanbase.

When UNC Chapel lost multiple players for getting some “Food & Drinks” at a party, the smug GT Fanbase wanted Butch Davis FIRED and called the UNC program out of control, now that the GT players are the ones taking small gifts, NONE of those douchebag-weasely fans remember their comments levied at OTHER CFB Programs.

Many GT Fans love to claim how stupid the Mutt Program is, but they were “smart enough” to sit AJ Green for the first 4-games rather than try to get away with it, GT acted WORSE than both ug@ & UNC because they went against NCAA instructions and prepped the SA’s “testimony” in order to INTERRUPT the investigation.

DRad might be the one taking the fall, but I guarantee you that the “PE Major from W. Carolina” was the one that didn’t want to sit Star players going into the ACC-CG, like CMR did with AJ Green for the first 4 games last season.

CMR could have potentially LOST HIS JOB last season, yet he did the right thing and sat Green, while Coach Fish Fry had NOTHING TO LOSE yet he rolled the dice and played Bey-Bey Thomas anyway, that right there tells you a LOT about CPJ.

GT Fans need to ask themselves WHY Coach Kung Fu Panda handled this situation so POORLY?

All he had to do was sit the SAs for the ug@ Game, the ACC-CG and substitute his “Offensive Genius” and simply won BOTH GAMES, and there would have been no big deal.

DRad was grossly unprofessional for telling CPJ about his talks with the NCAA AFTER the NCAA told him not to prep the Athletes in question, but CPJ acted even WORSE than DRad by telling the SAs that they were going to be questioned, not to mention anything ELSE he might have said to OBSTRUCT & MANIPULATE an ongoing NCAA investigation.

CPJ is lucky he is at GT, at other schools HCs have been fired for similar conduct.

Once this case is appealed the only penalty left for the football team will be the 100k fine for hurting the NCAA’s feelings. The NCAA has no authority (either specified or implied) to rescind a conference championship.I suggest someone read the manual. That authority resides with the conference. You can vacate the win, but the championship remains, unless the ACC says different. If Swafford wasn’t such a pussy, this wouldn’t be an issue. If Swafford wants the trophy back, put it out on North Ave or better yet, I75/85 north median and tell him to come and get it. Meanwhile, AU has 4 felons commit armed robbery, rents a QB for a year, has at least 4 players go on cable tv and admit to being paid to play and nada, zip, zero out of the NCAA and yet they still keep their championship. Only in bizarro world.

Somebody ought to fine you, Bradley, Roberson and the rest of you losers and put you all on probation, seriously. None of you can do any reporting on your own, God forbid you ask anyone any questions or break a story yourself. If this went on in November 2009 why are you geniuses just now hearing about it today? Because you are a bunch of morons yourselves.

So let me get this straight? Bay Bay who grew up in numerous foster homes and homes of 3rd cousins and barely was able to play high school football because no one could drive him to and from the practices while his mother and grandmother serve time in federal prison for marijuana charges his entire childhood from age 10 and up..took 312 dollars worth of clothes…but CAm Newtons dad can solicit 6 figures for his son to play on a college team and the NCAA says thats ok. Are you kidding me?

I would certainly hope GT would tell the NCAA to go blank themselves. And that Parker who left for Auburn can go blank himself too.

Why does the NCAA have the right to blame the school without naming those involved with giving the player 312 dollars worth of clothes?

Someone says the agency CSE is involved, is that true? Now that company is ran by a uga grad. How bout finding out idiots.

None of you seem to get the point.

A multi billiion dollar entity–NCAA, sanctioned a muti million dollar member Tech because a poverty level student Thomas took $312 in clothes from his cousin’s friend, a middle class ex back up QB.

really now doesent it seem rather stupid ? just what is the NCAA worried about that this type of an event concerns them so much—-they think somebody is getting money that belongs to them ?

One more thing for you Dawg fans.

To compare this situation to AJ Green only to point out how wonderful UGA is would be to ignore that Green was suspended at the beginning of the season, two games of which were against way lesser opponets — what would UGA do if they were about to play Florida, Auburn, Tech and then a bowl game ? Diffirent situation all together–from a competetive stand point. and might I add a recruiting (ie business) standpoint. It’s also like bragging that you didn’t eat an apple— and failing to point out that it was rotten.

either way this is an issue Tech and UGA fans should be able to come together on—–a college student should not be subjected to this line of inqiury simply because they took clothing—of any amount. Like Green Thomas was already at Tech and the clothing was apprently something to do with the attempts of an agent to get a client —- a kid who was about to enter the NFL, NOT AN ATTEMPT to get the kid to come to the school.

All the weasely, boot-licking toadies that hang on every word that CPJ speaks, now realizes what a sham and what a PHONY Coach Fish Fry is.

In another 12 months or so CPJ won’t have any credibility left to Recruit any decent players for GT, he’s already burned bridges in Ga. & Fla. with his draconian rules about taking visits to other schools, this is why GT is Recruiting NC HS FB so heavily, pretty soon that’ll dry up and Tech will be Recruiting in the NE-USA.

in the end we all know that no matter what they say. no matter what they do….

there are no excuses that a fan base can use that excuse….

-an ad getting a dui with red panties around his neck
-a fan base that urinates on its own library carpet
- a fan base that dumps tons of trash on what is for the most part a beautiful campus
-a student body that is so out of control that a national tv broadcasting crew called the uga fans the most drunken unruly fans they have ever encountered in over 40 years of doing broadcasts
-a team that continually competes for the fulmer cup year in an year out

And a team and coaching staff that has accomplished nothing over a 10 year period where they admittedly were the 2nd best recruiting program in the country. hell have they even beat fla once during that time?

and lets not forget…. that at the end of the season. the dawgs will yet again have to try and salvage their season by trying to beat the jackets.

Have you read the allegations against UNC? Assistant Head Coach John Blake, a long time friend and associate of Butch Davis, was being paid by an agent (Gary Wichard). An employee of the athletic association (Jennifer Wiley), who also happened to be the tutor of Butch Davis’ son, paid over $1000 in parking fines for football players. And yet, in 2009, there were DOZENS OF ARTICLES from the AJC, ESPN, CBS Sports and others that REPORTED that the NCAA ANNOUNCED IT WAS HEADING to Athens to interview AJC Green EVEN BEFORE the NCAA arrived on campus

THIS IS A GLARING AND SHOCKING FACT that both the AJC and the NCAA

My only point is that GT fans that have ridiculed UGA for any and every event published by the AJC now want the comments section of this blog closed. Ironic hardly describes the true irony of this development. Coach Richt has been bathed in criticism by many Tech fans for not being tough enough or manipulative in ensuring that football players remain on the team. For many, it was probably just an excuse to blast a professing Christian.

Accept the reality that humans are falliable whether they practice their chosen profession at GT or UGA. In the future, you might want to consider looking within instead of scouring for opportunities to demean your rival. Tech fans have been prone to encourage UGA fans to seek excellence and accountibility from its athletic leadership. Tech fans can now focus on their own problems. BTW, I’m not a Tech hater. I hope you right your ship and develop a rivalry on the football field. That’s what constitues a rivalry to embrace not the mean spirited exchanges that clogs the majority of these sports blogs.

NCAA Thomas – “From the committee standpoint, there was enough evidence to warrant Georgia Tech to hold the student-athlete out of competition until the information could be complete and that the student-athlete’s eligibility could be verified or not.”

Based on what this guy says their “evidence” was completely opinionated. Did they explicitly say “the student is ineligible”. If in the rules it says that if under investigation a student is considered ineligible then, yes, Tech broke the rules. But based on how this Thomas guy put it, the NCAA THINKS that there should have been enough evidence, but Tech interpreted it a different way…too convoluted for such harsh punishments in my opinion…and I believe whole-heartedly that they did not intend to impede, just that they made a mistake…WAAAAAY different.

But since Tech basically MAY have had one player accept some clothes against NCAA rules on one occasion, and didn’t like the attitude of the school’s now departed attorney – THAT is clearly an NCAA violation worthy of giving up championships and serving years of probation. NCAA is showing (once again) itself to be a pompous organization obsessed with its own power, with no compass as to it true mission and purpose.

Do you think that DRad “prepped” Bey-Bey Thomas, or do you think that CPJ did the deed, for all your logic that you like to present on these blogs, who do you think was more likely to tell Bey-Bey what to say to NCAA Investigators, the AD or the “driven HC” that wanted to win a Conference Title and secure a $200K Bouns?

BTW, since CPJ was DIRECTLY INVOLVED in the shenanigans that led to the 4-yrs. PROBATION and the vacating of the ACC title, does he have to PAY BACK that $200K bonus?

Wow, do you see what happens when you let the NCAA “get in your business”, all sorts of unpleasant questions seem to pop up out of nowhere.

Well I say the word the same way, I understand when I read a sentence what the meaning is. I do not need some facist government telling me how to spell a word.

Also while we are on it who had the bright idea to ad the extra “O” on to? Really I needed a extra “O” to let me know it is substituted for also?

So, UGA-homer Tim Tucker of the UGA-biased AJC found out about a
HIGHLY CONFIDENTIAL NCAA investigation supposedly known ONLY
to 1-2 key officials in the UGA Athletic office.

And Tucker, all by himself and ahead of EVERY OTHER media outlet in college sports
uncovered that upcoming CONFIDENTIAL visit ??

ONLY 1-2 people within the UGA Athletic office were notified by the NCAA that they were coming.

So, if only 1-2 people in the UGA Athletic office knew, then who from the UGA office
informed Tim Tucker? Someone OBVIOUSLY told Tucker.

How is it that NCAA did not go ballistic over PUBLIC disclosure
of an UNDISCLOSED AND HIGHLY CONFIDENTIAL investigation meeting in Athens ??

And what the hell is this about not cooperating with their investigation. Some how all this warrants a $100,000, losing our ACC Championship, and 4 years of probation.

While AJ Greene sold his jersey for $1,000 and all he got was a four game suspension. By the NCAA’s math UGA should have had a $300,000 fine and 10 years of probation.

This is a disappointing result. The NCAA rules are written in English and apparently are not Rocket Science. The Athletic Director at Tech as a requirement of his continued employment should be able to understand these rules, understand direct instructions from the NCAA and the limitations of disclosure. There are thousands of dedicated alumni who are interested in the reputation and tradition of the institution as much as whether or not we are “ranked” in some sport or have a highly regarded recruiting class. I hope that Dr. Peterson creates a system for “institutional control” that has no organizational responsibility to the Athletic Department and reports directly to him. Additionally, it is clear that the Athletic staff needs a review course in NCAA regulations and perhaps new blood in administrative positions.

As a graduate and supporter for nearly 65 years, I am disappointed in the lack of institutional control and the lack of regard for the reputation of the institution by those in positions of responsibility who should know better.

Regarding the fine, $100,000 seems excessive for $312 worth of whatever. If that stands, then our friends at UT and Ohio State had best get out their checkbooks.

Academic Fraud.

What I would like to know, in view of the open records law of this state, is how Georgia institute of technology was able to keep the AJ-C from following this story, until as the Georgia tek recruits today said, that they were

SURPRISED

by it all ?

How does this happen that

NOT 1 WORD is said ever in the AJ-C about this until it is announced that the Georgia institute of technology is hit with

MAJOR INFRACTIONS

PROBATION

How is this possible AJ-C ?

Did you cover this up AJ-C ?

Well, did you ?

You would have given The University of Georgia Front Page Headlines on this 3 years ago and every day since, following the story.

Georgia tek, on the other hand, you coddle throughout this entire sordid mess.

Overprotecting Georgia tek is what the AJ-C has done here on this NCAA PROBATION, the 3rd in the history of the Georgia institute of technology, and back-to-back in football – no sooner is the last NCAA PROBATION in FOOTBALL over for Georgia tek than once again another NCAA PROBATION in FOOTBALL for Georgia tek.

LACK OF INSTITUTIONAL CONTROL

AJ-C pampers Georgia tek in every possible fashion, and always has. If you live in the city of 6 million, you hear it daily that obviously you should be a fan of Georgia tek FOOTBALL.

Really ?

Why ?

They aren’t any good.

COVER-UP by AJ-C on this entire disgusting cover-up.

This is what OPEN RECORDS LAW is all about AJ-C.

Just so that I have the story straight from the mouths of AJ-C, we all read finally today only and never not 1 word prior about any of this NCAA PROBATION,

Thomas Brown

July 15th, 2011
1:58 am

Athletic director Dan Radakovich and president G.P.”Bud” Peterson

were BOTH told by the NCAA not to say 1 word to anyone that the Georgia institute of technology was under NCAA investigation for MAJOR INFRACTIONS of the NCAA including

PAYMENTS

ILLEGAL BENEFITS to football player at Georgia tek

DON’T SAY A WORD ABOUT IT, NCAA TOLD athletic director Dan Radakovich and president G.P.”Bud” Peterson.

Dan Radakovich then told Paul Johnson. And, the AJ-C goes on and the trickle-down from there.

AJ-C ?

Where in the blazes was there ever any mention of this ever in the newspaper I have thrown down in the street in front of my home ?

Answer. There never was.

If this were UGA, AJ-C you would have followed the whole entire story, citing OPEN RECORDS LAW of this state.

CALVIN BOOKER

Calvin Booker was Quarterback at Georgia tek 2007 and 2008 throwing 35 passes and completing only 15 for 2 interception and 2 touchdown passes, only.

Calvin Booker also rushed 33 times for 27 yards, total in his career at Georgia tek. Less than a yard per carry and 0 touchdowns rushing.

Calvin Booker attended

MAYS HIGH SCHOOL in Atlanta

Calvin Booker signed with Auburn and played at Auburn for his 1st two seasons, then TRANSFERRED to Georgia tek.

Calvin Booker thought that Auburn wasn’t giving him enough of a chance there.

It was quite the scandal at the time, when he transferred to Georgia tek May 8, 2006, as a sophomore.

Demaryius Thomas

Demaryius Thomas, who had 22 catches with Denver Broncos last season for 283 yards and 2 touchdown catches, also rushed twice for 1 yard total with no touchdowns last season. Demaryius Thomas had 2 lost fumbles.

DEMARYIUS THOMAS of

MONTROSE, GEORGIA

was the only receiver on Georgia tek’s “team.”

All the other WR quit the “team” and now stripped of ACC Championship, leaving tek with none ever.

Thomas Brown

July 15th, 2011
1:59 am

So, Demaryius Thomas figures Calvin Booker can just buy him clothes and whatever he wants to have purchased for him by Calvin Booker, former QB at Georgia tek.

Nice.

LIES.

Then, as only Georgia tek is best known for before the Ohio State scandal,

EVERYONE INVOLVED LIED TO THE NCAA.

Oh, no I didn’t get any ILLEGAL BENEFITS from Calvin Booker.

Now, he smears the good name of the Denver Broncos in this filthy twisted set of lies to cover it all up, going all the way up to

Dan Radakovich and president G.P.”Bud” Peterson.

Oh, we were stupid Bud Peterson says. We should have hired an outside counsel to tell us not to lie to the NCAA.

Not to

COVER-UP.

Cover-up is all the AJ-C does regarding the Georgia institute of technology.

Tell me again, AJ-C how none of this was shown the light of day until it surprises your # 1 QB recruit for 2012 today, him and none of us ever having heard one bloody word of any this ?

Dan Radakovich tells Paul Johnson and it trickles down from there, and you would have me to believe that the AJ-C did not cover-up this entire nauseating revolting cover-up by the AJ-C.

Don’t insult my intelligence AJ-C with a reply to me.

I don’t think the punishment would have been so severe if not for the fact, the violations come so close to the previous punishment. Whether there was an actual attempt to hide the facts or try to hinder the investigastion is almost secondary probably. People criticize the NCAA for not doing enough and then when it happens to them, it is suddenly too harsh. In light of the many suspicious and illegal things that have taken place with some football programs in the last few year, maybe it is time, to put the foot down a little harder. Look how the OSU fiasco turned out. I will bet you, Techs. punishment will pale in comparsion to what the NCAA gives them.

Maybe, if enough warnings and penalties are given out, situations like this and the others now in trouble, will be cut down some. Blaming everybody else, for the problems your coach and administration caused doesn’t help resolve it. Trying to point at another school, doesn’t help either. Man up and make sure it doesn’t happen again.

Can the NCAA please stop investigating student athletes for petty crap like this. If a kid gets a free pizza the NCAA wants to come down on him and his school. Since when isn’t the kids stuff his own? He can’t sell it or give it away without an investigation? Well there is going to be a big story break out of the mid west where a linebacker for a mid western team had an accident in his pants…school is to lose their championship….real stinky situation. Lets see….the country is Trillions in debt, our political leaders are spending every penny we have along with our children and grand children and we are worried about a kid getting a free shirt or pizza. What really needs to happen is that college students should be investigated by congress for the dastardly actions. Go away NCAA. Why not investigate what your doing with all the billions your making off of college athletes who play sports. Lets look into what your eating, looking at…any dirty pictures…any prostitutes???? yikes.
Next they will come out and say student athletes can’t have sex because it has a monetary value!!!! Can you imagine a football coach today..worrying about where one of his players got a pair of socks or upon making a visit to his dorm room and low and behold they find a filthy empty pizza box…investigation…call the NCAA . Can student athletes have yard sales?? NOOO…that would break all NCAA rules I bet. Who does all these petty investigations? Its got to cost everybody a fortune…over a shirt or a pair of pants….at first glance it seems very stupid. What we could and should do is appoint the NCAA to investigate our congressional leaders for their spending habits. Now that could be really meaningful. Lets put NCAA spending restrictions on congress!!

Thomas brown,

Has anybody on the AJC said they knew about it before hand? Not to my knowledge. Maybe they didn’t know enough to insure what they heard was factual.
Public disclosure laws, do not apply to a news story about a university being reported by a private company. They apply to public and federal govt. institutions. The last I heard, AJC was not one of those.
I would ask you, why Tech. did not even bother to at least make public, that they were under investigation. I think they are a public institution aren’t they?
The AJC has no obligation to break a story at any time. They do because they are in the business of reporting news, but they have no legal obligation to do so. They were not the ones under investigation.

You get that SIR?

Tech will appeal this. In law there are sentencing guide lines because the judges have a tenancy to be too lenient. I think it is based on the weighted average of the sentences that have been handed out before on this subject. If this is the case here this decision is an elephant compared to the crime. Ohio State and any other school under investigation would have to get the death sentence to equal justice. You cannot operate with this kind of scale. What are you trying to stop? Is Tech a rogue program out of control? Isolated in this one story it may look that way but compared to the rest of the NCAA, like the program itself it barely makes a splash. The alumni don’t really expect too much here, that is why we took seats out of the stadium. There needs to be an appeal, even if Tech is guilty. There needs to be a public airing out of this. When schools like Tech who have no real overblown ambitions are the subject to this there needs to be a better explanation. This will rock the entire NCAA, which is on thin ground now. I don’t think there is any real hate for Tech, like there might have been for a U of Miami. We are not good enough and basically most people realize we sacrifice winning to education. I think the NCAA has picked the wrong battle; this one will come back and bite them. I think Tech is one of the few schools that can gather public support in these kinds of matters.

OPEN RECORDS LAW for this state says that they HAVE THE FACTS on this and have had. Yet, not 1 word until it catches the recruits who have committed to Georgia tek by “surprise.”

Well speaking of messes, our economy cannot function evidently without the government running one trillion dollar deficits. Both Reagan and Clinton averaged a trillion dollars in deficit spending per 4 year term. Then W topped them all, nearly doubled the debt run up by all the other presidents, by adding $5,365,000,000,000.
Is that enough zeros?
What will the penalty be for our nation’s lack of discipline?
The dollar will no longer be the world’s reserve currency as some predict?
And our inflation will jump the next day.
Enjoy paying off the debt, not Obama, but decades of irresponsibility have given us.

GT has not been really decent in football on a CONSISTANT basis since the mid 1950s. Decent to me and most college football fans means MAJOR BOWLS like the Cotton, the Sugar or the Fiesta ( on in the last 20 yrs) or the Urange, Rose or Capital One and possibly the Outback Bowl. The Gator and Chic Fil A and Music City and Boise Blue Carpet Bow, the Shoney’s Weedeater Bowl, or that wierd Micron Bowl in SF do not count.

The lone exception is their 1990 NC shared that year by 3 or was it 5 other schools? That LONE 1990 year dating all the way back to the mid 1950s proves that GT has not been a factor since President Eisenhauer’s era and BBBB…………..meaning Before Barrack Being Born.

GT has nothing to show for being a major program over like 55-60 years beyond 1990. The ACC title in 09 is non existent now ……………….so, as I was saying before I ………………..

To me, the thing that bothers me, is the fact, that tech. violations are rather minor in comparison to some other institutions and the fines, although, heavier because of the repeat violations clause, are a little steep for the penalty. Other schools that have already admitted they did a lot of worse things, are still waiting for the NCAA’s hammer to fall. I would suspect that the NCAA after learning the items were returned was not satisfied. They wanted to keep looking until they found a violation and that’s why all you have is a failure to cooperate with the NCAA because Tech told them to take a hike. What schools are always being investigated, what schools recieve the most punishment, yea the southern schools

Yet the pious northern schools never get investigated and your going to tell me there has been no corruption going on up there for the past 50+ yrs come on. Chicago is a corrupt city, Detroit is loaded with corruption, most of the north is still Union run business that have always been known for corruption,

but amazingly these same people who you know attend these games do no wrong and take no bribes

Just watch and see the slap on the wrist Ohio state gets just like ND with their little TV timeout deal

Im a UGA fan but I know whats going on, the South has won something like 22 national championships in the last 30 yrs and they cannot stand it, and neither can the Northern run biased media aka ESPN. Just look at the lineup on ESPN and where each commentator graduated or coached at

There is no evidence at all that the coach hindered anything. From all sources it appears the NCAA just wanted to prove a point. The investigator got his little feelings hurt. If you cant inform a coach that there might be a problem how is he or she supposed to watch out for these things. CPJ and CMR appear to have enough integrity to do what is right. The players involved have not been ruled to have been ineligible, that I can see. The NCAA simply states that Tech SHOULD have held them out to determine further to what degree they were eligible. However, I believe the ACC cleared the players in question to play.

The NCAA cannot prove D Thomas or M Burnett received anything from an agent or agent runner, or that Tech coached or advised players to do anything that would mislead NCAA investigators. Just supposition and conjecture.

All of this is based on the NCAA being ticked off that Tech did not bow down at the NCAA altar. This is why this makes me sick, be it Tech or otherwise…the NCAA has basically put a team on probation b/c they did not play nicely with the investigators and they had their feelings hurt.

That should scare anyone who is a fan or alum of a college team.

I would hope that some of the “journalists” at the AJC would feel the same way, but they seem to be more interested in talking about a Tech “scandal” or “cover up”.

I find several things interesting here:

1. The AJC finally has to report on this story that has been out there and completely ignored until now. Is that because the AJC was trying to cover it up as much as they possibly could or are their reporters just completely incompetent?

2. The NATS fans sure seem willing to be “understanding” in these instances and they want to minimalize the violations committed. Oddly they had no problem with AJ’s suspension last year even though he told the school and gave the money he had made off selling an item to charity.

Here’s the difference bumblebee fans, at UGA we respect the NCAA. The UGA athletic program is not perfect and players make mistakes. They however don’t try to cover it up when it happens nor do they try to impede the investigation. Schools with integrity are like that. Schools without integrity and those who have superiority complexes think they can get away with not reporting violations and trying to impede investigations into wrong-doing. This is why Tech got hammered. They have no integrity in their program. It sucks when reality slaps you in the face, even when cheating Tech had a 2nd rate athletic program & now they have the NCAA probation to keep them down.

As a GT fan, the punishment seems about right to me. It was certainly not major enough to take away scholarships or bowl eligibility, so I think they got it right. Whether it was $300 worth or $30,000 worth of stuff doesn’t matter….they shouldn’t have tried to manipulate the investigation.

They like picking on the small schools like Tech, cuz it won’t cost them anything.

On the flip side…
USC got a relative slap on the wrist after giving Reggie Bush and OJ Mayo hundreds of thousands in benefits.

Auburn continued to play Cam Newton when in the midst of an investigation concerning at least $100,000 in benefits, and nothing.

Perhaps most egregious is the ruling that Ohio State players are FOUND GUILTY in a scandal, yet allowed to play in the bowl game?!?!?!?!?!

BankerDawg – Definitely agree that the NCAA is broken. However, when you cooperate with the investigation, your punishment is less than what it will be if you refuse to cooperate. If you refuse to cooperate with an investigation, your punishment is still going to be less than if you actively attempt to manipulate and impede an investigation.

That’s what I’m trying to say. The punishment fit the crime in terms of what the NCAA has doled out to other schools. If Tech would have assisted with the investigation, rather than impede it, you would have seen little to no punishment by the NCAA on this.

Nobody hates tech as much as I do, but losing an ACC title for $300 worth of clothes that “might” constitute as an infraction? Ridiculous. The NCAA is an absolute joke. AJ Green has to sit out 4 games but Terrell Pryor (and others) are allowed to play all games AND a bowl game! Now tech has to vacate a conference title because of a sack-ful of t-shirts. Random and inconsistent punishment does not a worthy organization make.

The NCAA should make players ineligible on the spot or not have the ability to retroactively make them ineligible. It puts teams in situations where they have to guess on the NCAA’s findings which is a horrible process.

NCAA: Hey guys, we think one of your players got some shirts and shoes. We don’t really know who they came from though. Maybe you should make him ineligible for your most important games.
GT: Well, we checked with everyone we can think of and we determined you are wrong.
A year and a half passes.
NCAA: Yeah, we finally decided we were right. Give us 100k and your ACC trophy.

It’s just stupid how this process works.

As for GT fans who think the punishment is too harsh….Thomas caught a 70 yard TD pass on a 1 play drive in a game decided by five points in which he should’ve been sitting down pending the outcome of his investigation. Even UGA had the good sense to sit A.J. Green while the NCAA was investigating….

If you want to blame someone, blame the ACC for telling you it was ok to play a player that the NCAA recommended you sit till they were thru looking into the allegations.

The NCAA is on it’s own personal agenda now, after how poorly they handle THE OSU and Auburn matters last year. It is painfully obvious, that if it involves a big money situation, that they will bend their rules to keep the big bucks floating and make so many exception that only a member of the NCAA enforcement committee would believe they are on the level.
With all the darn rules they have, I do not see how any school can avoid some sort of violation or another. The problem comes, when they ignore or delay investigation into the big violations and act like they did the right thing. They are now trying to insert themselves into the pictures as the end all to all and saying, if you lie too us or hinder our investigation, we will chomp on you. That is all fine and dandy if they use an equal and just approach to this and apply it evenly to all schools. I would think with the investigations they have now going on, they would not have been that concerned about a relatively small matter like Tech. was involved in. I think they are trying to send some type of message, that they are not allowed to be mislead, lied to or thwarted in their investigations. Seems a little late in the game for them to now try and recover their reputation.

techfan – I can show you a lot of examples of reduced penalties when schools cooperated with NCAA investigations and performed some level of self-imposed punishment. Very few schools have been either stupid enough, or arrogant enough to try and impede an NCAA investigation. What started off as a very minor infraction became exponentially worse as GT made attempts to cover it up.

Here is a major point that the AJC has thus far glossed over:

The report also alleges that staff members violated NCAA rules by giving the athlete details of the investigation before NCAA investigators interviewed him. According to the report, Radakovich told the head football coach, Paul Johnson, about the investigation — itself a violation of NCAA rules — and they had a closed-door meeting with the player to tell him about the investigation, which constituted another violation.

Violation after violation to cover up the initial violation results in a harsher punishment than if GT had just cooperated.

BankerDawg

It is my understanding that DRad telling CPJ about the investigation is in no way a violation of NCAA rules. Rather, it is something that was asked of DRad by the investigator regarding him telling anyone of the impending visit.

DRad chose to tell CPJ based on his need to know around scheduling, etc.

Again, this, to my knowledge, is not an NCAA violation. It seemed to be, though, what ticked the NCAA investigator off.

I guess ultimately my problem is that nothing was proven…not the dealing with an agent, not the ineligibility of the player(s), not the manipulation of witnesses…nothing.

So I would argue the punishment is absolutely disproportionate based on the fact that Tech wasn’t found guilty of comitting any infractions. A rather BIG point, I think.

Zac, watch what happens to Oregon & Ohio St. If it’s a slap on the wrist, then you have a complaint about the punishment GT received.

What do you want examples of, teams getting less punishment if the cooperate? Look at Tennessee a few years ago for an example.

I don’t recall the outcry by GT fans last year when AJ Green received a 4 game suspension for selling a jersey to a guy claiming to be a “memorabilia collector”. UGA self-reported & cooperated, HELD AJ OUT OF A GAME BEFORE THE NCAA RULED (unlike what GT did with Thomas), and he gave the money he received to charity, yet the NCAA stuck with the harsher punishment. But in the eyes of many Tech fans, AJ should have received an even harsher punishment. So spare me. GT didn’t lose a scholarship. All they have to do is pay a fine (not that large really when you look at the size of their budget), and erase a win or two from the record books. Boo Hoo.

Don’t confuse civil misdemeanors with NCAA by laws. The NCAA will allow schools to handle their own civil matters if it does not involve a case of breaking an NCAA rule.
A. J. Green was self reported by UGA and he was suspended, by the university, even before the NCAA had ruled on the punishment he would receive. There is the difference. There was no attempt at any time to hamper or misguide the investigation. The NCAA says that is what Tech. administrators did. Tech. did not suspend the player involved prior to a decision being made by them on punishment.
Tech. can appeal the ruling but who knows how long that will take or whether they will get a favorable ruling. Also, against Techs. favor, is the fact that two years ealier they had just been on probation so the repeat offenders ruling must have applied. It doesn’t do any good to try and point the finger at other schools. If the Tech. administration had handled the problem right in the first place, the punishment might not have been so harsh.

I thought the AJ Green punishment did not fit the crime. The investigation committee was head hunting and the suspension should not have happened. Tech did not talk to the investigators so they were punished.

It blows my mind that Tech fans still think this is an issue about clothes. The NCAA specifically told Radakovich not to tell ANYONE that there was an investigation, and he does the exact opposite of what he was told by the NCAA.
