Caleb King’s loss no big deal for Dogs — it’s Crowell’s show

Washaun Ealey (left) and Caleb King blew their opportunities at Georgia. (Brant Sanderlin/AJC)

(Last update: 4:50 p.m.)

We saw what Washaun Ealey brought to the table for Georgia. It wasn’t good enough.

We saw what Caleb King brought to the table for Georgia. It wasn’t good enough.

So sorry if I’m not all bent out of shape about the sudden news that King has been declared academically ineligible for the Bulldogs in the fall. Nothing against the young man personally, but in terms of how this impacts the fortunes of the football team, it’s close enough to zero. Fact is, the Dogs were going to rise or fall next season on the strength of freshman Isaiah Crowell, any way.

Coach Mark Richt has certainly let it be known on occasion that Crowell was the only running back he really cared about. How often does a college coach say on national letter of intent day something remotely close to this on a recruit: “ I wouldn’t be shocked to see him running that rock in the Dome against Boise State on the opening play if he does what he’s supposed to do”?

Richt was talking about Crowell. He had pretty much had it with Ealey, who a week later was suspended, eventually was granted his release and transferred to Jacksonville State.

Having King for depth purposes might’ve been nice. But what in the last three seasons — given injuries, a lack of production and his own off-field issues — would lead you to believe he could be counted on?

Scouting services had him as one of the top running backs in the nation and the first overall player in Georgia back in 2006. Either they were wrong or he figured he would just let the resume do the work for him in Athens. He had one great game in three years (166 yards against Georgia Tech in 2009). He was injured too often. He was arrested last year for failing to appear in court for a speeding ticket (which came to be something of an epidemic in Athens).

King is 23 years old and would have been a fifth-year senior. How can a fifth-year senior with everything to play for not stay academically eligible? This was not somebody whom Richt could count on.

Some Georgia fans will belabor the lack of experience behind Crowell. That’s a legitimate concern. But in three seasons over four years, King offered no guarantees.

Richt said in a statement, “We wish him the best in whatever he decides to do. However, we have to move forward and this will provide more opportunities for others to step up.”

Others won’t have to step up too much.

Success next season was always going to hinge on Crowell, and certainly the offensive line in front of him. Caleb King was just a name on the depth chart.

I hope you are right Jeff. IC will have some big shoes to fill and will get his fair share of the carries now for sure. Ken Malcome will be our best bet for blocking since he has a full year of the scheme and blocking assignments under his belt. Let’s hope the three (3) man team can stay healthy and carry us this year for a running game.

BTW – Why was King suspended from the bowl game this past year? Was he even eligible?

Everyone rips on CMR for letting go of players who don’t follow rules or attend class. Yet no one rips on coaches whose players enrolls in only one class, an independant study (Cadillac at Auburn) his entire senior year or a coach who enrolls a student who had been caught cheating twice and was caught stealing a PC.

Can’t agree Jeff. You hit on it with the depth. Relying solely on a freshman for an entire season is beyond risky. You need a third down back who can pick up a blitz and spell your starter, especially as the season wears on. To convince me that UGA won’t miss King, you’ve gotta provide some evidence that those behind Crowell are ready to step in as well.

techfan

In the long run yes, but UGA opens up with two tough games. They are going to have to rely on a true freshman who hasn’t even been on campus long to have any chance in those games. He will have to learn all of the plays, get in high level college football shape, learn to pass block well, and maintain his cool while all of the sudden being the most important person on the team. To pretend that this is not a big deal is just lying to yourself.

There’s something going on at UGA that I can’t remember ever seeing…I’m not sure if it’s a good thing or a bad thing. But, I think that we can all agree that this summer has been different than any in recent memory. However, I’m not ready to wave the surrender flag yet. Everyone has to just suck it up and move on. Schultz,

Wow, what a spin you are putting on this one. This is a ridiculous article.

Nothing is good about this for UGA. Will Crowell have taken over EVENTUALLY, most likely.

Now, Richt has no option but to make him run right out of the gate. Was King a all world back, no. But he was plenty serviceable. 5 yards per carry, good TD numbers, and most importantly he was the only with full season of experience. And please Carlton Thomas? All 170 pounds of him doens’t know anything about being an every down back in the SEC.

Hell, you don’t even know if Crowell can adequately pass block, I feel sorry for Murray this year. That’s the toughest part of the game for a true freshman running back, passing blocking, because they don’t have to do it much in high school.

Sorry Jeff, you are dead, dead wrong on this one. In the long run you may be right, but Richt doesn’t have a long time to get this thing going.

As far as the team it is bad news as well. We are so thin there is no way CMR is going to let this team scrimmage which will hurt us late in games. Couldn’t agree more with Schultz. Other than Georgia Tech game in 2009, when did Caleb ever show that he was anything close to an impact back?

It would have been interesting to see what kind of player he couldn’t be if he wasn’t riddled with injuries and didn’t play behind what’s been a very a soft offensive line, but it’s been obvious to me for quite some time that he was never going to be the running back we hoped he could be. He joins the likes of Jasper Sanks and Kregg Lumpkin – serviceable backs who just couldn’t live up to the enormous expectations, for various reasons.

I don’t say this often, but well said, Mr. Schultz!

King would’ve been nice to have around, if only to teach Crowell the intricacies of pass-blocking, but he wasn’t gonna be the man this year. We all knew that.

I also have a good feeling about the combo of Malcome and Crowell. Thomas can still work his way into the rotation as well, but only if Bobo uses him correctly (tosses, sweeps, and zone reads would all be good uses: NOT up-the-gut-running!).

Again, it sucks for King that he couldn’t keep his act together, but UGA’ll carry on. Go Dawgs!

And what if the kid takes a helmet to the knee, mild consussion, tweaks a hammy? Wouldn’t it be sort of nice to have another guy who’s played tailback at the college level before?

Hey 404 Caleb King chose poorly, you are aware that Tech, Auburn, Alabama, Tennessee, amongst many others were hot after Caleb King. I included those four since your a bandwagon fan.

It IS a big deal to lose King, Jeff. No 1st year RB makes an impact here. Even Knowshon got redshirted, then only began starting about mid-season in his second season. And he was only the #10 overall NFL pick after his junior season.

I wish Crowell the best, but I will be shocked if he makes a big splash this season.

The Dogs are better off without the baggage that Ealey and King brought to the team. Ealey couldn’t control himself and King ran like a wuss from the start.

I still remember R Samuel banging into and over Gamecocks a couple of years ago and he could still carry the rock if they need a brutal runner.

Crowell will be fine and that kid from SWD is a punishing type of back.

Carlton Thomas is 170 and has the speed to make a difference if he just gets 10- 15 carries a game.

Hope CMR does a better job at recruiting for character as well as ability henceforth. We don’t need any more Ealey’s and King’s. Bad apples can spoil the whole barrel.

King was Crowell when he first came to UGA. The fact of the matter it really doesn’t matter who totes the rock for the Dawgs because Richt and Bobo want to air it out and leave the power running game in the playbook too often. Sometimes I feel that if Herschel had played in Richt’s offense he would have been just another back.

Can’t blame Mark Richt for this. It’s not like he was off on mission trips all summer, instead of monitoring academic progress like he’s paid to do…oh, wait.

Not sure it’s good for Crowell to come in believing the position is his. Be better for him if he thought he had an older player ahead of him on the charts. (After all, Herschel Walker wasn’t the starter in his first college game…) Sorry to see Caleb wasn’t willing to put out the effort. He would have had a lot of playing time this year, I think.

” I wouldn’t be shocked to see him running that rock in the Dome against Boise State on the opening play if he does what he’s supposed to do.”

That may be the answer but it is also the problem. Samuel, 5 star RB recruit, King, 4 star RB recruit and Ealey, 4 star RB recruit were all guilty of not doing “what he’s supposed to do.”

And this is not unique to UGA. Can you say Ohio State Buckeyes with a now 0 – 12 record in 2010?

How do you get a youngster who has only one focus in life, the NFL, to focus on the Dawgs, or the Jackets, or the Buckeyes?

UGA should have a wondeful running game if they can keep the top 7 OL types healthy. If a team can block, it can run the football. Who the RB is becomes secondary. Just be sure it is someone who does not drop “that rock” on the ground.

IT’s called depth, Jeff, and now all the sudden we don’t have it at the RB position. Having King back there was an insurance policy in case Crowell struggles or is hurt. Now we are forced to rely on a true freshman and hope he doesn’t get hurt. Crowell better be good…

I think at this time you have got to bring richard samuel back over to running back. He was only 17 when he carried the rock last time. I believe its worth a shot and will not be surprised if he is taking reps at rb when practice starts. Richard Samuels had alot of potential to me, the main problem was he was so young at the time. If crowell wins the job then thats great and samuels can go back to linebacker. We have got to have a plan B though cause this season is too important to throw all your chips in on a true freshman who has not even had a practice with the team yet. I think Malcolm could be solid too if he can just stay healthy. But whatever happens I will stay behind my Dawgs. Once a dawg, always a dawg, how sweet it is

If you are not already aware of this then you do not know much about football. The now have the ability to run a one back set cause they have speed in the backfield. You will see Marlon Brown split out to one side, T-King on the other OC7 in one slot with Bennett/Wooten in the other. You will see a lot of different sets this year.

Don’t count out Samuel. He has experience which is more than 2 of the 3 alternatives do. UGA is going to have to pound the ball early in the season because you can’t expect inexperienced backs to pass block all that well. The O-line needs to man up and stay healthy.

Interesting that so many think nothing of this loss….yes, King is one of the biggest busts out there, but the loss of his experience will be meaningful. Crowell is no Lattimore…his attitude and propensity to put the ball on the ground will surprise some….on the downside.

With all these losses in players, I do not see how the Dogs get ranked as high as they are….will be a surprise to pull that one off.

kev I am not sure that would be fair to Samuel at this point. Our coaches have jerked a bunch of kids around like this. Remember our Fair Catch Specialist, Logan Gray? We hosed that kid. One of the two FB’s this year kind of got the shaft too. Seems like there is a lineman that gets moved from O to D and back over the last 3 years.

Sure we sign good classes…but the corkers of each class haven’t amounted to much lately. Sure we have been a pit stop on the way to the NFL for a few guys but by far my favorite player in the Richt Era was a 2 star FB recruit that moved to DE and worked his tail off.

Only an idiot would say addition by subtraction is good under these circumstances at UGa. You can’t win in the SEC without a solid running game. Now UGa has no choice but to be pass first and one dimensional, not that King was going to be a factor anyway. He’s a better pass blocker than runner in this offense. I bet the CMR/Bobo braintrust is saying: Fear not Bulldog Nation, our losses at RB this year will make us even better. We’ll find a replacement that will pass block even better. I thought King was overrated since he was a junior at Parkview. I never understood the high national recruiting rankings. Cameron Smith over at Brookwood was a much more impressive RB at the time (though academic issues reportedly cost him a chance to go to UGA or USC). It didn’t surprise me that King never became anything special at UGA.

Still, it will hurt UGA a little to lose his experience and have to push Crowell or Malcom into the starting role. One, or both, might be ready to handle the job, but it would have been better to hold them back a little until one of them stepped up and took the job away from King.

Even though I questioned King’s ability at RB, I hope he is able to finish his education somewhere else and find success away from the football field.

"CaneDawg": That's it, enough is enuff....

July 8th, 2011

Georgia was my favorite SEC team and I split time pulling for them and the “U”. The SEC is the top football conference and the ACC wishes it was as good so I went to the Dawgs, because the ‘Canes have an equally mutual hate for UF. But that’s it for me, enough is really enough. I’m hauling arse back to UM, where Al Golden is stressing and basing his offense on a devastating power running attack to take pressure off the QB. Golden will use the run to set up the pass. Sure UM knows how it feels to lose a highly recruited RB, when it lost Storm Davis, but Golden has forged ahead with a “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger mentality at UM”. And he will live or die with a power running game at Miami. UGa has been slowly dying on the pass first mentality of its head coach and will have no choice but to rely on what he believes in to save his job this year. No WE3, No CK, No O-linemen that can run block, No depth there and at RB …..No problem. The only thing todays news means is that true freshman has to step up and master in one month in college that he didn’t do in four years of high school: learn how to pass block. Good Luck to you Dawgs, looks like the plane is about to crash and I’m bailing out only to land in beautiful South Beach. Po’ Dawgs. Go ‘Canes !!

If Crowell can’t cut it, our offense is gonna struggle (w/ no running game)…unless someone else steps up at TB (from “no where”…ala Robert Edwards).

BFS @ 5:09PM ET (7/8) – Very well stated. Too many fall into the “jock sniffin” zone. The drunken fans who rave over the thugs are usually castrated simpletons. If a player on “your/my” team is a thug/criminal, then we ought to not make excuses for him. SEC coaches need to crack down on thuggery & instill some old school discipline. If they scare of some “lauded” 5-star recruit, then so be it. The recruiting services grossly overrate many of the kids anyway. Remember how (bust) Marquis Elmore was a 5 star & David Pollack (3x All American) was a paltry 3 star. Rivals & Scout are bad on overhyping too many players.

Caleb King was recruited by a lot of SEC schools coming out of high school. You all should thank UGA for recruiting him, as your school would have just as likely had the same problems UGA did with him.
I hate to say it, but I think the boy is just lazy. And why would JUCO do him any good. Where does he go from there if he were even able to academically graduate from a JUCO. By the time he did, he will be almost 26 years old. The last I checked, he is no Rocky Blier, Roger Staubach, or Chad Jennings, so I don’t see a lot in his future at JUCO or even the next level. Maybe, he might want to look into a trade school, and specialize on a job, he is capable of doing. What future he had at a shot for the NFL, I would think is pretty much over at this point. It is sad though because everybody in the world tried to help him out. I guess that old saying, “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink it”, applies for sure here.

All the signs as to how we went 6-7 last year point to the Ealeys, Kings, Harmons of the world. Past time to move on. Georgias better off without King and Ealey. At Florida they only ask that thier athletes maintain a 1.8 GPA to stay eligible to play…at Georgia its a 2.0 GPA…not much of a difference you say….I guess not…but enough to count towards getting your degree ligitimately. Sure Georgia has had off field issues..mostly traffic violations and underage alcohol possession. Two problems 99% of every college has….but heres what Georgia doesn’t have…… Athletes playing who’ve been convicted of theft…players using the stolen credit cards of people who’ve died in auto accidents…convicted drug users…cheaters…girlfriend beaters…etc……UGA’s not perfect by any means but they also don’t look the other way for the sake of a win…my hat’s off to CMR for cleaning out the deadwood on the team….it will make the victories this season all the more sweeter!

Dawg Rule,

He is not eligible for the entire season. He failed to even meet the standards of a remedial class designed to keep him eligible. I think the best thing that can be done in this situation is to dismiss him from the team and the school. Why waste another year waiting on him to be mature enough to do his work. He will be 24 years old before he can even strap them on next year anyway, and it is time for UGA to move on. He has had a lot more chances than most people at UGA to succeed and he has chosen to not take advantage of a wonderful opportunity. The best chance I see for him is to find a trade school, and learn a job that he can do for his life. The NFL is not waiting for him to grow up and UGA should not either.

I don;t know if its accurate to say No first year RB has ever made an impact. Thomas Brown came in his first year and almost got 1000 yards. Another fist year guy Danny Ware tacked on 750 that year. Lumpkin had 500 his first year. Washaun had over 700 in only nine games his first year. None of the backs we have now have had to pick up a blitz in live action.

If I am Murray, I am more than a little concerned at this point.

Is Crowell super talented? Absolutely. I’ve seen his tape and seen him in live action. Do I feel supremely confident right now knowing he will most likey be our every down back this season….not even a little bit.

Hopefully Boo can step in and show us something, and CT can be the touchdown, big play threat we need. At least early in the season, we will have to be running back by committee, which, let’s face it, is not a great place to be in the SEC if you’re not named Cadillac, Ronnie Brown, Mark Ingram, or Trent Richardson, etc.

We may be fine, ultimately, but to suggest this is nothing (coupled with Ealy’s departure) is ridiculous.

GR8- As a long time educator in the state of Georgia, there is nothing wrong with the education system in Ga. Like everything else you have people like the Atlanta Superintendent that is put in a position that she was not qualified for. Also the people that approved a big bonus for higher test scores should be held accountable also. Why get a bonus for just doing your job? An education is there if you want it. Caleb King was allowed to transfer because of grades and the lax GHSA transfer rules allowed it. If I have one knock against Richt (and I am a Richt fan) he has brought in some kids with very questionable character. Finally we are weeding some of them out. No they weeded themselves out. But don’t judge the education in Georgia by King or that so called Superintendent of the APS.

I was also surprised that the Assistant Recruiting Coordinator’s job only pays 40K a year. Maybe Georgia needs to hire some difference makers to the staff and pay them! It’s all relevant to success.

St.RIcht. What came first the chicken or the egg? Is the glass half empty or half full at UGa these days ? While your kind is bashing the kids, why aren’t you at least questioning the integrity of the staff at UGa that is consistently failing in whatever they do. When these kids are failing to live up to expectations, doesn’t it in someway make the people that brought them to UGa look very bad considering all the money that was lost in commission of the failure. It is past time for total change to begin at UGa from its top post to the football program or this once great program will remain mired in mediocrity. And try to wake up and be smart because the problems at Georgia are bigger than kids washing out, transferring and quitting the program. With the current people in place at UGa these kids couldn’t have been that smart in the first place for signing with Georgia. You see Cam Newton, a GA. product, politely side-stepped the offer from CMR to be a TE at Georgia, to go on to college football greatness as a QB elsewhere. You got to give the kid credit for being smart enough to stick to his dream of being a celebrated championship QB, instead of being an unknown, little used TE at UGa. (People that take shots at Newton are haters that wish he played for their school and until Ncaa has creditable info than rumors you can’t sham Cam. He’s no Pryor until proven. Meanwhile, one way or another players, fans(and recruiter) are jumping off the sinking ship at UGa like fleas jumping off a sick dog.(pardon the pun) People are fed up and at their limit and saying enough is enough, gotta go, gotta go because how can anyone justify UGa paying $3 million per for mediocrity and commission of a continous series of failure within the program. There is a passive, humble, meek, mild-mannered demeanor at the head of the UGa football program and it transends into and beyond the field. Those are great qualities to have off the field, but UGA needs a more aggressive, fiery, emotionally impassioned, no-nonsense guy at the controls and you will see that junkyard Dawg mentality we crave coming from the players on the field and in the classroom. This guy doesn’t have to be as dictatorial as Saban, but the players need to be able to say to incoming recruits we have a good coach, but he doesn’t take any sh!t. Much like what Miami has found with its new coach Al Golden. Stop placing blame on the kids and holding the paid in full adults in charge accountable.

Hey Jeff,

I totally disagree and think this will definitely have a negative impact on the Dawgs this year. You can’t loose all your experience at running back and it be a good thing. We are putting all our hopes and dreams on an 18 year old kid who got stuffed by measely Calhoun in the high school playoffs and proceeded to flick off all the fans who were there. He also has struggled in the summer workouts and has never played a down in SEC football so forgive me if I’m a little concerned. Personally, I am expecting more out of Ken Malcome than I am Crowell.

I agree Jeff, keep it clean but also the AJC shouldn’t be anointing UGA because of wins when their so called STUDENT/athletes are barely graduating from high school and then majoring in a made up football degree ( I can name over 25 now) just for the sake of winning. Most should be at a jr. college or a community college. There are way more deserving athletes. Cut out the stupid degrees so when they don’t end up a professional athlete ( and most will ) they’ll have something to fall back on. About time to come down on the ignorant athletes and write stories about what a true s/a is.

King was as overrated a running back as any in Georgia high school history. I have never coached football and stopped playing in 7th grade, so why is it I was right when I told EVERYONE who would listen after UGA signed him that he would be a bust? He became better than I thought from working very hard, but he did not have the academic smarts to succeed long term (left Parkview for Greater Atlanta Christian? Huh? Grade fixing?!) GREAT kid, as nice to be around as any. Signed everything. Just a shame because had he attended Ga Southern or Tenn-Chattanooga, he would have been a stud. Instead, Bobo the clown (great recruiter, terrible scout) thinks he is the real deal and brings him to Athens where he rarely made a difference. Mr. Richt continues to have problems from his poor hiring decisions and also needs to stop using these completely moronic, OVERRATED RECRUITING SERVICES like Scout and Rivals. These idiots know less than I do, they just want all the sheeple to pay the $100 per year to read all the nonsense they publish (sue me). The coach needs to hire a real scout to go out and find the REAL talent that Georgia continues to fail to sign (Jonathan Dwyer, Jamal Lewis come to mind). Only then will UGA ever reach it’s potential. For now, Richt has to hold his breath that Ken Malcome and Isaiah Crowell are as good in games as they are in practice. If not, we’ll be welcoming a new coach come January.

Should be fun watching a 165lb RB (Carlton) block DE and LB this Fall. Crowell is immature and it showed in the playoff game in Calhoun. He got two penalties for unsportsmanlike conduct after Calhoun took over in the game.

Answer to Murray County Mystic

And you know that Calhoun keyed heavily on Crowell all night. Crowell still broke a long TD run that ended up being called back. Even Calhoun fans said that Carver’s offense was more effective when they had Crowell on the sideline because they became balanced and the defense couldn’t key on anyone. But Carver’s staff didn’t capitalize on that. Can’t blame that on Crowell.

1980 was 31 years ago. Plus Herschel was a freak of nature, even if he was, “My God, only a Freshman” now ….. Div 1 football has gotten a WHOLE LOT tougher since then. \

You can’t put all your eggs in ONE tailback’s basket. He will be done by game 7 if MR & staff overuse this guy. He might be every bit as good, or better, than Lattimore, but SC even ended with 4 Ls if I’m correct and they had a better WR corpse in 2010 than UGA does in 2011.

Hope the kid doesn’t get hurt, and the coaching staff doesn’t think he’s their only option. This is a GREAT opportunity for someone on the team to make his mark.

Hey Jeff, while you’re laughing over the comment about Saban waiving a back, how long do you think Caleb King would have lasted playing for Saban at Alabama with academic problems, run-ins with the law, failing to live up to commitments he made to the coaches, etc.? My guess is that he would have been gone after one year. Saban gets rid of the cancers, Richt coddles them and lets them infect the rest of the team. How many arrests has Alabama had in the last 3 years compared to Georgia?

And this is a black eye on GAC. It was not exactly a well kept secret there that Caleb King was a lost cause academically. I don’t know how UGA managed to keep him eligible for as long as they did.

Don, thanks for confirming what I knew in 2007, that King was not only overrated, but that GAC took him in to save him academically so he could qualify to get in to a Division 1 school. Overrated as they say. Knew it all along.

Don,

I agree.

Neither King nor Ealey would have lasted at any other SEC program for more than one year.

Richt has been more interested in saving souls and the players took advantage of him.

Now he has a new AD, his job is on the line, and these decisions have been taken away from him.

The problem for Georgia is most of those decisions should have been made years ago and those scholarships would have already been given to players who are willing to put forth the required effort to win.

Now you see all the moves finally coming in the same year and there are no experienced players to step in on the offensive line, at running back, and at linebacker. Georgia will struggle this year because of it.

It’s too late for Richt to save his job this season. He’s gone. But long term, this house cleaning will help your program.

Good luck with reading defenses, picking up blitzes, and pass protection. Spin it however you want, but this is going to hurt the offense a lot. Defensive coordinators will be licking their chops. UGA coaches will have to limit their play calling for at least a few games if not the whole season.

I cannot believe I’m writing these words:

You are right, Jeff Schultz!

Caleb’s expected 2011 role at Georgia was to show Crowell how to block and, then, to slowly ride into the sunset.

If King did everything the coaching staff asked of him, CMR would give Caleb a few totes here and there as King’s last resort chances to impress an NFL scout or two. So long as Caleb maintained ball security and reliably picked up a few yards when called upon, Richt and Bobo were prepared to give King a few more carries while the younger backs figured out blocking schemes.

Now, though, with Caleb gone, our young backs will have fewer downs to transition into real SEC running back starters.

Fortunately for Isaiah and Boo, though, Georgia’s fortunes against Boise State and South Carolina have always hinged on Georgia’s defense, not on its running game. Losing Caleb makes that truism a tad more true, but only a tad.

Losing Caleb will not change Boise State’s defensive strategy one whit. They’ll send a highly-motivated Billy Winn et al. at us all night like they came at Tyrod Taylor and the Hokies last year. They were going to do that anyway.

In that scenario, Bruce Figgins and Zander Olgletree were and are going to be more important in the first half than Crowell and Malcolme anyway.

If Grantham’s defense holds as we all pray that it does, Bobo should be able to work Isaiah and Boo into the game more and more as it progresses and we aren’t losing badly. If the D doesn’t hold, it’s simply not going to matter that we don’t have Caleb King anymore anyway.

Look for a reprise of Boise State in the South Carolina game, where we’ll face more talented, but maybe, maybe, a team of less motivated players led by Lattimore and Alshon Jeffrey.

Don’t expect Isaiah and Boo really to start showing their stuff until Coastal Carolina and thereafter. By the Mississippi State game October 1, we’ll know whether we really have an SEC running game in 2011.

Thanks, Caleb, for all you have contributed to Georgia football, especially your and Washuan’s wrecking the NATS Thanksgiving weekend 2009. Best wishes and Godspeed.

But your untimely departure from the Classic City is not “the end of the world as we know it.”

That allowed Coach Richt to release fumble artist and bad attitude Ealey. Then he able to trumps up charges and stick King with bad grades to free scholly and give Crowell more toting of the rock.

Crowell is finally real deal for Dawgs at RB and goning break Herschel records. That put Dawgs to dominants East and just got to beat Bammers to play in BCS title. Glad we cut stinkys loose in Ealey and King to gives us more schollies to bring in talent and lets Crowell explode onto sceen as freshman. Tough luck for Ealey and King but Ealey deserving for bad attitude and both got to be casted out for not exposing talents and SEC speed.

MobileDawg: I respect your opinion about Newton, but we really don’t have all the proven facts and he may have been a hired gun though no paper trail has surfaced. All we seem to hear is scandal after scandal in college football today. But AU will pay if Newton is dirty. I really don’t care about them anyway, but the stuff that is going on at UGa is ludicrous. Now there’s rumors leaking out that before long Crowell, will make CK & WE3 look like choir boys is absolutely mad and more bad news to come if true. Mobile Dawg, where and why are bad seeds deliberately being recruited to UGa ? Does their character and academic background mean anything ? Is the staff conducting any research on these kids or are they so desperate to keep their jobs they are throwing caution into the wind and grasping at straws in their recruitment ? Last week the news was a severely injured O-lineman was brought to UGa, despite the fact he has sustained career threatening damage to his knee. UGa spent thousands and thousands of dollars on the kids’ rehab before a mutual decision was made that he would be better off resuming football elsewhere. We were barely over that debacle and today the CK academic debacle and before those two left, Ealey, Harmon, and Gray abandoned the program. All these kids where in the program for years and when they leave huge amounts of money have been thrown away and wasted with the exception of Gray who graduated before his transfer. Now comes incoming freshman, young and immature IC. I may be wrong for saying this but I’m going to say it anyway. I got a bad feeling when I saw Crowells’ appearance on pictures, some with gold encased teeth. I said to myself is this what it has come down to at UGA. Is Richt bringing in wanna-be rasta men to UGA ? He appears to be heavily influenced by Little Wayne and the only thing missing are the tattoes, which I’m sure he will have soon before long during his stay in Athens. It doesn’t matter about him being the top RB recruit in the nation. What matters is will he go to class and seek an useful education along with being a responsible representative of the University of Georgia. How can he be capable of doing the right things and staying out of trouble when he has the appearance of a saggy panted, entitled, tatted, troublemaker with dreads & gold teeth. It make sound prejudiced, but it is what what it is a question that needs to be asked while there’s a revolving door for players spinning at UGA. At Miami a kid can get away with that image if he keeps his nose clean, but this is Georgia and Bulldogs were traditionally held to a higher standard. This paradox maybe the final chapter in the book of MR that could ultimately cost him his job at UGA if Crowell goes the way of CK or WE3.

For the most part thye are all recruiting the same type student. RedandBlackDAWG

July 9th, 2011

I see two glaring comments that are complete misrepresentations of the facts, and in fact ignore the facts all together. 1. Only get athletes from Atlanta area. Let’s see, King finally landed at ATLANTA Christian Academy, so that worked out well. Two of the four robbers in the Auburn jail right now, are Atlanta city products. That worked out well. 2. UGA has got to stop allowing people like King to enter college. Just how many other schools in the SEC, or for that fact in the country, also tried to get King out of high school?
How about we try to get the NCAA to raise the standards up a little bit on admission standards in the first place. Would the average athlete, if he was just trying to get into school based on academics alone, have the 3.2 GPA, that is suppose to be the nation wide minimum, for other students that are not athletes? I think we know the answer there. The problem with folks like King, starts long before they ever get to college.
Where are the parent(s)? Did the high school coaches and teachers decide that he could slide through school as long as he could tote the rock? Would we even know who C. King is, if not for his athletic ability? If we could have a positive solution to just these few things, maybe we would not have so many C. Kings now. What will become of him now. He is not literate enough to function at an acceptable level to get a decent paying job and he is only 23 years old. How do you motivate him, to take the time to want to learn? Who’s job is it to teach him responsibility? If society gets the answers to that, we will all be better off in society. Quit filling these kids heads up with notions that they will all be in the NFL in a couple of years. Make them do real college level work in order to play sports at that level. Push these rich bunch of NFL owners to form a real minor league where kids can go, if they are not academically qualified but have special gifts as athletes. UGA is by far the only school guilty of offering a scholarship to kids that have no place in college. If the standards for admission got tougher, maybe our athletes might be better students. No dumb down courses for athletes. might help also.

How many running backs is this now that Richt has destroyed and UGA fans just write off and say, “well the kid didn’t have it” No! Your coach doesn’t have it. In 10 years he has produced two 1,000 yard rushers (Smith and Moreno) and ended the careers of over a dozen solid prospects. Your schedule is easy so you will still go bowling and win 8 games, but stick a fork in Richt. He is done. You will lose one to either Boise or SC, TENN, FL, AUBURN or Miss State, and maybe GT. I don’t want to hear about the defense and the added nose guard Jenkins. This team has no chemistry and face it, if Richt was going to win it all, he would have done it by now. Is Crowell really as good say as a Marcus Lattimore? I hope he has that kind of impact, we are really depending on a 18 year old to make or break our season which is very scary. I still say we win the SEC this year and make a run at the NC like AU did last year…our schedule sets up perfect…

Jeff I think the point is not how a football team will do but rather what is happening to our youth and our schools – athletes are courted, idolized, protected – just because they can play a game. They are only as valuable as their last play and if they can’t play anymore they are not needed. The sad thing is what happens now to an uneducated former football player.

Here is what is also sad about the King saga.

“Somethings u cant control, and what seems bad right now might turn out good. Too all of my homeboyz hold UGA down don’t let them brake u….”

If you can read what he says here, he is actually blaming UGA for his problem. I am afraid I can’t find it in me, to see how he expects to go through life, blaming others for his own actions. UGA did not break (Brake) him down and cause his failure, he did that himself. He threw away a terrific opportunity that other young folks would sacrifice a lot to have had.
Maybe he can brake in with Midis Muffler shop as I am sure they need clean up folks, to go behind their technicians. He will need to grow up and take responsibility for his life.

What I find sad about this whole story is that yet another young man has totally wasted an opportunity for a free college education at a fine university with a chance to alter the entire course of his future life and actually have a chance to be a productive member of society, but instead will probably never graduate from college, flame out at a chance at pro football and be just another burden to society, his family and possibly many illegitimate childern when he never is able to get a job and do anything with his life. Very Sad indeed. Hopefully I am wrong and he will learn from this, but from his tweets, it looks like he thinks it is out of his control

We (UF) own UGA

11:01 am

Let’s look at a few common issues when comparing King to Crowell shall we….

-They both came to UGA with all the hype in the world.
-Both are not the brightest kids when it comes to academics.

With that said, how is Crowell going to be the “savior” for CMR? Intelligence on the field goes a LONG way towards a successful career. Crowell will NOT have the season Marcus Lattimore had for South Carolina last year, and the loss of King hurts more than CMR lover nerd Schultz or any UGA fan wants to admit.

King may have fumbled in key moments the past couple of seasons, but he also had very productive games. BUT the biggest asset he brings to the field….He is a very solid blocker and knew the system and blocking schemes. Crowell doesn’t.

I guess when the next 2 academic casualties are announced, Schultz and UGA fans will again spin it as a positive.

Enjoy 7-5!

JEFF SHULTZ- How can you say its anyones show? He hasnt ran 1 down in college and youre already claiming him as a saviour to the team. Sure i’d love him to break out and rush like Herschel Walker did in his debut against Tennessee but thats foolish talk.
What indications have come to your attention that Crowell is a god-send RB? Players are better, quicker and stronger in college lest you forgot that. In a perfect world it would be a huge i mean huge blessing if Crowell was just that type back.
It has been many many moons since Georgia had a RB thats NFL Quality and i guess Edwards was the last one to come to mind and besides Georgia’s Offense is set up more for the passing game than running game.
We just hope and pray no injuries, grades, team violations, and committing of a crime befalls this guy. Talent will keep you at Georgia but Bad Character will land you in jail.
Theres still weeks left before the season opener and lots can happen. To be honest i just want Georgia to show up on both sides of the football against Boise St. and keep it close and show us flashes of how good their gonna be and i’ll keep the barf bag next to my recliner when i see Bobo calling the plays.
But the one aspect that i agree with JEFF SHULTZ on is maybe just maybe i could see Richt use Crowell some to see what he’s capable of doing.

For all you name-sayers from Florida and Tech you’ve got alot more to worry about than you ever did. Floridas program is in the tank, they got a new coach and the personnel they have is geared up to only pass with a miniscue running game.
They have no game breakers like they used to, the coach is gone, i think this will be the worst team Florida has had in 50 years. It’ll take 3-5 years for them to just become a respectable team again. Look to lose 2-3 games at “The Swamp” and 2-3 on the road and 1 game this year to Georgia.
As for Tech nothing ever changes. They will always i mean always wish they had any talent to put on the field. If they were in the SEC this year i’d say the only game they would win could be against a Div. 11 team other than that i really dont know if they’ll win 3 games this year.
Georgia has the best opportunity of those 3 teams to have a very good season and the other 2 teams needs to just pray for a .500 year.
I dont say this out of hatred because those are the facts. Florida St. and Miami got most of the Florida Recruits leaving Florida with the crumbs. You were very lucky to have maybe one of the greatest QB and Coach in college football, basking in the sun having a great time seeing your beloved gators crush schools but now its on the downward cycle and you’ll have to learn how to sit there and watch them lose with clinched fists, cursing, and gritting your teeth.
I would say to make alot of appointments to your orthdonists, drink very heavily and buy yourself a punching bag.
As for Tech…….. wont be atleast another decade before you may win the ACC well atleast in football. Up n down coaching, over achievers i would just give away your season tickets.
Go take up a hobbie like scrabble and listen to the games on the radio. We just dont want alot of people having heart problems this season and maybe they should give free heart exams before games.
You know those things that are in the trailors.
Or if you just miss being downtown then i would suggest that you hang out at the Varsity and devour on those dogs n burgers with lots of grease and fat and calories.
Honestly dont consume yourself with Tech, watch them in the fall in basketball.

You may be correct ASSUMING:

1. Crowell will be as good against SEC defenses as he was against high school defenses.

2. Crowell can read, cipher, and write to the level required by UGA academic minimums for athletes.

3. Malcome (who has never had a meaningful rush in college football) and Thomas (who is a physically frail back relative to college football athletes) can provide adequate backup for Crowell

4. Crowell does not get hurt.

That’s quite a list of assumptions for your premise that UGA will not miss nor need two running backs that have proven experience against SEC defenses (and have performed at least to the level of being adequate).

Also the coaches should stay tough on him to have him physically and mentally ready not give him the super star treatment. It’s amazing as I read some of these blogs, that some of you grown men(with family’s) are so childish in your assessment of this young man. Yes he failed, yes he’s had academic problems, yes he didn’t pay some speeding tickets. Now lets look at this from your side of wrong doing. Caleb King came to UGA with academic struggles (Georgia knew this), but with the pressure to win(from people like you) the Coaches, President, and Alumni, as well as boosters, Georgia, Ohio State, Alabama, and any other big time program lets these kids in. Many of them African American without any other chance of ever getting in school.Charlies Hayes for example says these kids are GIVEN SCHOLARSHIPS. Not so fast my friend! How many stairs did you run, how many weights did you lift, what meals did you sacrifice to eat what was healthy? You guys who has never played this game beyond high school(if you even played at that level) think you know these young men. You don’t ! Isiah Crowell a year from now may be subjected to this same treatment, let’s see what Jeff Schultz article will say then. I wish the kid(King) nothing but the best, and hope that he grows from this. There’s also a lesson that you adults must learn, that these are young men, most from tough backgrounds, most giving everything they have to stay ahead. The “Average” student couldn’t and wouldn’t have the heart to do what these kids do, and most of you negative critics who drink, drug, cheat on your spouses, and lie your way into jobs, or wouldn’t have nothing if your trust fund, or mom and dads check book didn’t get you into school need to shut the f#@k up with your whining.Good luck Caleb, good luck Isiah, because wherever you go both of you will as long as you are on a college campus be nothing more than a part of the cash cow machine, Just ask the players at Ohio State.

When you realize Ealey was in deep trouble last winter, CMR’s ESPN comments about Crowell on signing day last winter make a lot more sense: “I wouldn’t be shocked to see him running that rock in the Dome against Boise State on the opening play if he does what he’s supposed to do.”

Thankfully, he will be a multi-millionaire soon, and close to 100% are happy for him. I hope Caleb tries out and makes the pros, and most real fans wish him well. Don’t fall for the trolls pretending to be Dawgs. Apparently King made some very bad decisions, too. No surprises here, King was academically challenged before he arrived at UGA, which proves that UGA will drop their acacdemic standards for their football factory. There are too many issues surrounding the UGA program, and King is just the tip of the iceberg.

The King issue, the 2 UGA fans in Jax beating up on the disabled man at the Publix in Jax, CMR on the bubble, and the Ealey issue. Athens continues to fan the hate flames for this program, and these are the reasons that this program receives no respect, and the the laugh of D-1 football.

The arrogrant and overrated fan base is more concerned about getting drunk, and being as obnoxious as they can on game day, as opposed to being respectful and students of the game.

GT, be honest. You don’t know what you really have when you recruit, now do you? That is why 5 stars wind up being average and 3 stars sometimes win the Heisman. It is also why sometimes kids that underperform academically wind up doing well in college, and some drop out. Yes, if you limit your recruiting pool to kids that scored 1400 on the SAT you won’t have a lot of academic problems. Again be honest, GT: you are the head coach, and you see a 5 star recruit who has weak scores and grades. Are you going to try to recruit him and tutor him up to speed, or just give up on him? I suspect you would sign him if you thought there was a remote chance of him making the grades. We all love stories like “Blindside,” but you wouldn’t have signed Michael because he didn’t test out high enough, assuming your answer was no. These things happen in life, and the best thing to do is for everyone to learn a lesson. Make no mistake, loosing King hurts our offense. Caleb is dumber than a box a rocks, but he could be counted on to not only teach Crowell the ropes; being a former starter, but he could also provide valuable relief. Asking a true freshman to carry the load is a fools game.

Something is going on in Athens that nobody is getting the scoop on. I’ve never seen so many pre-season defections in 30+ years of following the Dawgs. There was no logical reason for Brent Benedict to leave the program, when he was so close to being a starter. Same holds true for A.J. Harmon.

At least he thought he was going to have to compete with King to start the year. Now, what does Crowell fear? Nothing. This kid had a ego already because he reads his own press, but now what kind of Beast will be created? Murray better keep this kid grounded and focused this off season.

It is probably just talk, just something to say to sound cool and deal with his emotions, but it just seems odd that his perception would be that the system is trying to break him. I feel for the guy. It sucks what he’s going through, and I wish him all the best. There is something about that text, though, that may be indicative of some of the disciplinary problems at UGA.

I see that Hairy Dawg takes comfort in the numerology that if we give Crowell Herschel Walker’s number 34 that he can replace both Ealey and King (3 and 4). I think this is intriguing. Maybe Preacha Man Markt Wrecked can put Louis Farrakhan on the payroll to synergize the season. After all, Louis is a proven subject matter expert in numerology.
Personally, think Crowell should wear number 11, to remind everyone that we will have paid Knucklehead Richt $3M millions for 11 years now assuming he survives till the end of the season. Do you think that we have gotten good value? A payout to Preacha Man Richt to terminate his contract immediately would be the best investment UGA could make right now. Our program is a national joke at this point. It is an embarassment to every alumnus of the UGA, dead or living. It also reflects poorly on the State of Georgia and perpetuates all the regional stereotypes others think about us.

I couldn’t agree more schultz, the only bad part about this is the lack of depth it creates; however, that’s a major hit from depth. Although he wasn’t a good runningback, lets be honest, and was a major distraction to the team he was the only back with real game experience. Yes carlton thomas has played, but it has been in a limited role at best. The good part about this, no one really knows a thing about malcome and crowell other then uga coaches, no one truly knows their strengths and weaknesses on the field which is a positive.

I think Georgia will be just fine. Bring Samuel back into the mix. Give Malcome an opportunity to showcase what he can do. I think Crowell will find his groove and be a force. I also would like to see what Hartman and Van Dyke can do on occasions. It would not hurt using Smith or Boykins on offense in a running back role.

The talent at wide receiver and tight end will be a cause for concern for Georgia’s opponents and with the in-coming freshmen hopefully this area will shine.

I wish King the best and hopefully he can get his academic problems corrected at some other school.

If there is a running back that was thinking of going to Georgia, this might be a good time to ask if there is something available?

If it were me, I would be asking the grades of my QB, RB, WR, and other top players at every staff meeting. Ealey and king came in with same hype as Crowell and you realy think that freshman running back is going to be answer. I thought you knew better than that. If two of the offense lineman get hurt the season will go south in a hurry. UGA is betting a lot on a kid from the junior college to be answer at nose guard. I guess right they say that hope spring in th e heart of every bulldawg.

Regarding the number of Academic All Americans it sure would be interesting to see what their majors were. How many were in community recreation or such and how many were real degrees?

Two words of warning on Crowell……..Bryce(?) Brown UT disappearee

Jeff:

So why didn’t you add that the line is depleted in your summary statement? Why didn’t you note that there is NO INSURANCE if Crowell gets hurt (or teams key on him)? Also, I hear he’s not a pound it up the middle back like Lattimore, so what makes you think he can take 20-25 carries per game? I guess because your primary focus is in staying in good graces with the UGa admin and the portion of the fan base that like to say UGa is a top 10 program but get offended when you point out the school’s ftball mediocrity.

Honestly, it sounds as if you got the pitch notes from the Athletic Dept and just threw up a column. Thanks for doing all you could to faciliatate Georgia Football’s damage control effort in this time of need.

Why do we assume that after missing the mark with Ealey and King, the Dawgs are right this new back?? He could be just as big a bust, particularly with Richt already calling him the starter over the older guys. Another big let down coming, I suspect!

College is hard work mentally if you are a 4-watt nite lite of intelligence. If I was the recruiter in charge for UGA, no student would be considered unless the student had a minimum gpa of 2.75 in high school. 40 times are worthless if you cannot get on the field. I would rather rise or fall with some one who actually competes in the classroom. Ealey and King were “hanger queens”.

We are done before the season starts. I am going to miss Richt. He was a great coach and another team will be lucky to have him if he continues to coach.

Who really cares if King was there or not-he obviously didn’t care. Lets see what the “new kid” has-won’t be a disappointing if he doesn’t produce-he is a “true freshman”. Our QB has a strong arm and is probably the “smartest” QB in the SEC. We have some decent receivers. Will be a much better season than last. Maybe itis time to start to recruit some “backs/players” that have ability, sense and some “smarts” to play the game. Looks like a lot of the players CMR goes after can hardly read and write. I had rather have “average ability” with intellelect than a “great ability” player with few brains!!! Some of the greatest football players ever to walk “Between the Hedges” did not initially have the best ability-but they could learn and turned into great players-I could give you a list that goes on and on!!!!!

Look at what happened to Bama’s Demetrius Hart, a true freshman RB that some services (Rivals) had ranked higher than Crowell. He is for the year with a non-contact knee injury. It is foolish to say that losing a contributing fifth year senior at a paper thin position will not have an impact on UGA’s season. What if Crowell gets hurt like Hart? UGA does not have the depth that Bama has to make up for it. This could be a long season for UGA. It is scary for UGA that they are relying on a guy to carry there team when Bama has a guy ranked higher than him who was going to be third or fourth string because of the talent ahead of him. This shows how far UGA has to catch up.

CMR and his prayers won’t help UGA. They’ll be off to an 0-2 start and “Fire Mark Richt” billboards will start popping up.

Don’t things like this make just your job harder, Jeff? Easley, King and dozens of others just like them were never college material in the first place and having their illiterate, immature asses around provides you and your ilk free material about which to write. You should ask for a raise.

Just remember, Herschel Walker stepped into the first game of his freshman season against Tennessee and Bill Bates will never forget it! Oh and he admits that he got hit harder than he ever had in his life during summer practice. He manned up though! Marcus Lattimore didn’t do such a bad job last year at South Carolina, either. If Crowell has the stones, he can be the man!

King BLEW IT on his own. I know too many friends struggling to stay in UGA by working part time jobs and studying hard to make it WITHOUT s scholoarship. This guy needs to be the poster child for “What Me Worry”

Another fine product of that esteemed high school academic institution, Greater Atlanta Christian. Schools like GAC and Wesleyan are populated with the rich kids too stupid to get into good private schools, along with the athletic recruits like Caleb King brought in to win meaningless championships against overmatched and underfunded tiny public schools which makes the parents feel better about themselves for spending the $$$ on crap educations.

RMike158: Oh man how on earth can you even TRY to put down the Florida program. TWO recent freaking National Championships. Another year and 1 win away from a Third shot at a National Title (the Bama loss in SECCG). A Heisman Trophy winner and two-time finalist. Two National Championships in basketball no so long ago. In just about ANY year now, Florida can potentially pick up most of the state’s best recruits and in just a short matter of time be right back in the National Title picture.

And you want to say Florida is in trouble? What? Where? When?

While no school can coast on past achievements for too long, they yet can still coast on them for a while.

What the Heck has UGA won in football and basketball lately?

NOTHING!

Another fine student athlete from one of the sports factory suburban private schools. Schools like GAC and Wesleyan are for the rich kids too dumb to go to good private schools. The schools recruit and pay for the Caleb King types to come in and win meaningless sports championships against tiny overmatched and underfunded A and AA public schools, so the parents feel better about forking over the $$$ for substandard education. Seriously, graduated from a proviate high school and flunked out of UGA, with all of the tutoring and counseling available? Must have been dumb as a rock, but manged to gradulate from GAC.

They should have seen this coming by his high school experience. Left a 5-A Parkview program, spent a summer in Houston doing remedial work, got hurt in 2-A with GAC. It’s a head thing, IMHO.

I hate that UGA has to depend so much on Crowell, and put pressure on him so early, however, everyone was a freshman once, so who can say how good he will be. A great deal more depends on who will block for him, than whether or not he can step right in. Everybody has to pull together, and grow up a little quicker than we might want them to, but stranger things have happened. They could fool us all, since none of us knows what is really going on at a college when it comes to a group of 85 young men, most of which will give their best to be successful.

If we need to sacrifice a series of downs and put a walk-on in to spell Crowell or Malcome, we will do that.

We were going to be inexperienced at RB this year anyway because King is and always has been, unreliable.

As for you NATS, Gators, Aubies and Pea Fowl… degrading our team while trying to disguise yourselves as fans by using words like WE and US…our team will be in there leaving cleat marks on the front of your teams’ jerseys every time we run into your endzone…which will be early and often.

As long as we have 22 kids willing to sweat and bleed for this team for a full sixty minutes, we can play with anybody that steps on the field.

Put it on your board if you think it will help.

It won’t.

Dang right that Crowell is real deal. He goning break Herschel records and expose dominants for Dawgs. We gots enough to win all this year and flying under radar with talents and Christian for winning. Traitor Muschamps and Flabby Weis is falling apart by 3dr game and returning to Fire Zooker Days.

Ha ha ha! Schultz, you have gone off the deep end. What is going to be funny is when the back peddling starts after an 0-2 start, and getting run off the field in those two contests. Dont worry UGA we got something for that ass. Another loss to poor ole South Carolina, this time at home. How much are you gonna hate me after another beating? Richt and his religious nonsense will not win you any games. Who will be your next coach dawgies?
