The next sound you hear will be snoring . . .

on-vacation

The workout is tomorrow. First, I nap.

Will Josh Smith be traded?

Will the NFL lockout be settled?

Will the Braves pass the Phillies for first place . . . or the Mets for third?

Will Dan Uggla hit above .200?

Will the Atlanta Spirit locate their conscience?

Will Gary Bettman locate his soul?

These are some of the questions that may be answered while I park this blog for a couple of weeks. Just taking a little down time. I trust some of the above issues will still be unresolved when I return. Anybody care to venture a guess?

Until next blog, be good.

Will the NFL lockout be settled? There will be NFL football by 9/11/11. They would NOT dare miss that opportunity.

Will the Braves pass the Phillies for first place . . . or the Mets for third? First place, no chance.

Will Dan Uggla hit above .200? Nope, but he will still have most innings played. ??!!

Will the Atlanta Spirit locate their conscience? What conscience? See above.

Will Gary Bettman locate his soul? That MF better hope he never has a layover in Atlanta.

The Atlanta Spirit, LLC, never had a conscience. I expect the NHL Board of Governors to approve the relocation today, when they vote. Draft Party, anyone?

By the way, the New Jersey Devils have FORFEITED their 3rd round pick this year, due to cap circumventing 1st attempt at his contract. Hope Jay Grossman is proud of himself, today, along with Lou Lamoriello.

Puck Like A Porn Star, one fine day … Gary Bettman will say he always had faith in this Atlanta market, but that THISSSS time, he’ll ensure that an ownership entity will take proper care of it. And if that happens, we’ll all suddenly think Bettman is a GREAT commissioner, because he brought the Coyotes, Islanders, Panthers, or Blue Jackets to Atlanta.

Honestly, the truth about the loss of hockey in this city … resides with an ownership that never wanted this team, tried to ditch it as early as 2005, and systematically alienated all the hockey going fans, by failing to do something as rudimentary as firing the GM, after 5-6 years outside of the playoffs. And bear in mind, who SEPARATED the Spirit assets? The NHL, Gary Bettman, or the Atlanta Spirit? Answer: The Spirit did. And had they proceeded, as planned, back in 2005, we’d have lost our hockey team then, too. For no one can afford to run a team without a percentage of the proceeds from the venue.

State of SC not doing much better. SCar gets humiliated, I mean humiliated, by ACC team in its bowl game. SC BB, well, what can you say about that. Now the baseball team has shown brightly the last two years. On the other hand, UNC won its bowl game against SEC Tennessee, went to final-8 in BB, and is currently among last 7 teams remaining in CWS. If facts speak for themselves, UNC has best sports program BY FAR.

Enjoy the down time Jeff. I wonder if your vacation will be as long as Jack McKeon’s stint as Florida’s manager. I don’t expect the NFL to have an agreement until late July or early August. The Braves will continue to trail the Phillies despite having a superior bullpen and not much of a lesser starting corps but the hitting will continue to disappoint I fear. I have a feeling that Uggla will get his BA up around .185 but will not make any big changes in his batting approach. The Atlanta Spirit will still be searching for their conscience and Josh Smith will still be a Hawk.

While trying to present the Stanly Cup, Bettman was booed so loud he couldn’t even hear himself talk.

Then the chant of “Bettman Sucks” rang through the buidiing over and over. As long as Bettman is in charge of the NHL they will always be number 4…what an idoit.

All he (Bettman) had to do was to come to Atlamnta tell the fans they have to buy 13,000 season tickets or the team would be moved.

The only reason he didn’t come to Atlanta, the only reason he didn’t make this offer…he knew he would have lost $60 million dollars. Why didn’t the NHL give Atlanta a chance to respond? You can’t sell a house in 6 months but you can sell an NHL franchise in 2 weeks? Really?

Bettman and the NHL ought to be ashamed of themselves. A Life sentence, for the Thrashers,… with no trial permitted..

The fans were never put on notice by the NHL…what a disgrace.

Thrasherdawg, and the proof of what you’re saying, perhaps, resounds best in this reality: “This move happened so fast, that the league didn’t have time to ponder realignment, and so … the Winnipeg franchise, located in CENTRAL CANADA, will continue to play in the Southeast division next year.”

Pregnant pause. What if they win the division? Seriously. The Winnipeg team would be SOUTHEAST Division champions, and have a banner hanging from the rafters, in C-A-N-A-D-A. That’s how fed up Gary Bettman was with this particular ownership group. And no one can tell me any differently. He watched this ownership turn what OUGHT TO BE a revenue-producing market, if properly-run, into a $17 million-a-year revenue DRAIN on his league. And yet, he won’t, even now, denounce the ownership as the MAIN CULPRIT behind the relocation.

And what did this ownership do, precisely, to wind up where they are??

1. League miminum budget.
2. Be litigation happy, clogging dockets for 7 years
3. Retaining a GM whose track record is equal to any blogger’s. Stop and mull that one over. Imagine the Thrashers named MEEEEE, the GM. And let’s just say … that I squandered lottery draft picks, eventually giving them away for a song, or in salvage deals that didn’t advance the club any, and made the playoffs just once in 11 seasons, and didn’t win a playoff game, while DRIVING AWAY all the hockey fans in the region … because, well … I’m ‘just an idiot blogger.’ Well, Don Waddell’s results are the very same as the ‘idiot blogger’s.’

4. Retaining the same head of scouting that led to the Stefan, Lehtonen, Bourret failures, and failure to develop Braydon Coburn, in concert with the coaching selections.

5. Why continue a list that can go on for 12 more items?

Bottom line, Gary Bettman was pissed at this group. And none too pleased with the fans in this market for not throwing ‘blind support’ behind the ‘idiot blogger,’ demanding more from him? Interesting view, that Bettman has. “You fans should subsidize incompetence, and come back for second helpings!”

Enough already. The team is gone. The city was wronged. Our elected officials did nothing to put up any obstacles. In the end, the burden of successful operations falls on ownership, that never wanted the burden.

Brenden, Right as ALWAYS !!!!! Both times we have now lost teams, it has NOT been because of the Fan Base, it is because of owners who did NOT want to really own the team.

The ONLY winner out of this MESS is David McDavid, he proved in court, the entire sale to Atlanta STUPID Group was a scam and it was UPHELD. Underhanded and Low Down !

Will Atlanta “Really” get the NHL back ? Brenden what do you think ?

Just think of a NEW arena on the North side on 285 at 400, a NEW team with solid serious owners
who want to WIN, gee Whiz a sellout EVERY GAME !!! I bet on it.

Braves will win the wild card this year again. They are clearly the second best team in the NL behind the Philllies, even with all of the injuries the Braves have had and the lack of hitting.

Brendan

June 26th, 2011
3:34 pm

LAC, yes I believe the NHL will return to Atlanta one day. But we shouldn’t be concerned about a ‘time table’ so much as we should be concerned about ‘who’ will own/run the team. If, for example, the Ilitches of Detroit, could be cloned, and own an NHL team in Atlanta, of course it would be successful. No brainer. But “Ilitches don’t grow on trees.” It MATTERS, to the Nth degree, who owns the team.

Another thing to be concerned about, LAC, is the venue, who owns it, and how much of the proceeds derived from operating rights the NHL franchise gets. That’s huuuugely important. Without it, the NHL franchise, in Atlanta or any market, is unviable. It’s a non-starter, in terms of the NHL returning to Atlanta. Or, as we just saw, REMAINING in Atlanta. It can’t be done with proceeds from the venue. That’s ESSENTIAL. That’s CRITICAL. We could sellout Philips Arena, paying $90 for nose bleed seats, and it’s still NOT viable, without the proceeds derived from operating rights to the venue.

Now, to be clear, we’re never going to sell one (1) seat, at $90, in the nose bleed section. We’re not Toronto. We’re not Boston. We’re not Detroit. We’re not NYC. We’re Atlanta. And in Atlanta, what’s needed … is reasonable prices and accountability over results. That’s about it, really. Show the hockey fans that you’re TRYING … and they’ll turn out. Keep Waddell in charge through the Lockout, and the four years after the playoff sweep, and Atlanta hockey fans will flip you the bird, and stay home. Duh. Ownership’s not trying. It’s not a case of winning or losing that depends on the hockey fan support, it’s strictly a matter of TRYING on the part of ownership.

I don’t rightly know, LAC, what our city ever, ever did … to deserve the likes of the Gearons, Pescowitz, Levenson, Seydell, or Turner as owners. But clearly, it was “something” we did. I tell you, it was great to watch the Draft, and not see a trace of Don Waddell’s presence there. Winnipeg’s selection of Scheifele, or D-man Dougie Hamilton or Center Sean Couturier, was a “headscratcher” and “Waddell-like.” Truthfully, I wasn’t too impressed with any of Chevaldayoff’s moves at the Draft. Let’s see what the guy comes up with in free agency. He’ll allegedly have a lot of money to back whatever it is that he’s trying to do.

Well, I guess I’ll have to post this over here on Schultz’s website, because
UGA-homer Chip Tower doesnt like ANYONE writing “unflattering” things
about anything UGA-related.

So, we have the former City of Columbus Parks & Recreation Director Tony Adams and at least 2 others that have been ARRESTED, for using MUNICIPAL funds to pay for the personal travel expenses of a UGA-bound recruit, Jarvis Jones.

It’s noteworthy that Mr. Adams did not use PERSONAL funds.
He used MUNICIPAL funds.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Very Very Bad.

On November 18, 2010, the same Columbus newspaper wrote that Mr. Adams
and Herman Porter were dimissed after it was discovered that Mr. Adams
had “mis-appropriated” $200,000.

Folks, this isnt about $800 airfare and $200 cell-phone bill.

It’s about a $200,000+ “slush fund” operated by former employees of the
City of Columbus Parks & Recreation Department.

So, where did $200,000 go ??

The better better question is: To WHOM did $200,000 get paid to ??

So, whats the REALLY INTERESTING link in all this ??

Here it is: Money was used to pay airfare for UGA-bound recruit, Jarvis Jones.

Anyone want to guess WHERE Jarvis Jones played high school football ??

Thats right: Jarvis Jones played for Dell McGee at Carver-Columbus High School.

Yes, that UGA-designated hot-bed of un-eductated football talent, Carver-Columbus.

Folks, this story has been building for the past 12 months.

The R-E-A-L-L-Y dangerous question that will be asked is this:

Have there been ANY OTHER UGA-bound recruits from Carver-Columbus
that have ALSO received illegal benefits from this “slush fund” ??

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Folks, this Columbus-Slush Fund story has M-A-S-S-I-V-E implications
for UGA as it unfolds.

Stay tuned.

Brenden, I agree. Twice we have been STUCK with owners who have NO business in owning a professional sports franchise. These last group of idiots take the cake when it comes to how to ruin a team and PO the fan base… Not to mention their LYING all the time !

Would… Would taxpayers of Dekald/Gwinnett ever vote to build a sports arena big enough to support an NHL team out along 285. Could include Cobb voters too, But a New arena at 285/400 for example would increase attendence ten fold. Plus, like you say, a SOLID owner, one who knows the sport and how to run a team and HIRE THE RIGHT PEOPLE !!! It would work like a Charm !!!

Just look what the Winnipeg people did, ALL Atlanta management etc… OUT ! That most likely got them 10-15 extra points this season !!!!

Remember there IS a preseason game in Charlotte,N.C. at Time-Warner Arena in Uptown
Charlotte in September where The “Thrashers” play Carolina.

Let’s keep hoping, still own my house in town, we will see, But these night time storms in
Kansas City… GEE WHIZ, lost three trees already !

Lastly Brenden, What do think the chance of Phoenix coming to town ? Glavine and friends could muster enough up with Anson Carter Right ??? But would the ClusterF, even let them play downtown ?

Take Care !

I do think that the good folks of North Fulton County, GA would see the benefits of having a facility there. I think it’s central to all the hockey fans who live above I-20. The key, again, would be who would own it, and what their MOTIVES are for owning it. For example, do they ‘really want to win’ … or … are they like Beau Turner, just happy to say their own a part of a pro sports team?

If they truly care about hockey, then the sport would likely succeed here. And when it does become a raging success, they can erect a statue of Don Waddell that reads, “We remember. And we corrected what you did.”
