Isaiah Crowell's shadow looms large in the SEC next season. (Jason Getz/AJC)
Possible unrealistic expectations notwithstanding, we’ve noted several times that incoming Georgia freshman running back Isaiah Crowell could have the greatest impact of any player on the Bulldogs next season. ESPN’s Chris Low echoed that sentiment when he told me on Wednesday, “If Crowell can have three-quarters of the impact that Marcus Lattimore had at South Carolina, it wouldn’t surprise me to see Georgia playing in Atlanta for the SEC championship.”
But here’s what Low didn’t do: Name Crowell one of the 10 best running backs in the SEC.
ESPN’s SEC blogger just came out with his list of the 10 best backs in the conference, and Crowell, the jewel of the Dogs’ incoming class, didn’t make the cut.
When I asked Low about it, he laughed.
“I have him at 10A,” he said.
He said he struggled with the rankings because of the SEC’s depth of talent at running back and considered five players for the last three spots: Auburn’s Onterio McCalebb, Florida’s Chris Rainey, Tennessee’s Tauren Poole, Florida’s Jeffery Demps and Crowell. Demps also was left off.
For what it’s worth, Low recently came out with his list of the SEC’s 10 best quarterbacks and Georgia’s Aaron Murray led the way.
So what are you thoughts on the Crowell being left off? Should we expect greatness right away? Following is Low’s projected top 10:
1. Trent Richardson, Alabama, Jr.: Now we get to see Richardson as Alabama’s go-to back, and it should be something to see. He’s a freak physically and runs through defenders and around them in equally stunning fashion.
2. Marcus Lattimore, South Carolina, So.: I’m sure we’ll hear it from South Carolina fans for not having Lattimore in the No. 1 spot. The truth is that it could go either way. Lattimore has bulked up to 230 pounds, which should help his durability.
3. Knile Davis, Arkansas, Jr.: To have a guy coming off a 1,322-yard season No. 3 on this list tells you how good the running backs are in this league. What separates Davis is that he can get the tough yards and also has the speed to break the long ones.
4. Mike Dyer, Auburn, So.: The Offensive MVP of the BCS National Championship Game a year ago, Dyer will be even better as a sophomore. He’s hard to tackle, runs low to the ground and will be the centerpiece of Auburn’s offense in 2011.
5. Brandon Bolden, Ole Miss, Sr.: In just about any other league, Bolden would be right there at the top. He averaged 6 yards per carry last season and scored 17 touchdowns. He’s also one of the best pass-catching backs in the SEC.
6. Spencer Ware, LSU, So.: The LSU coaches can’t wait to turn Ware loose this coming season. The 5-foot-11, 225-pound sophomore showed off his electrifying moves in the Cotton Bowl last season and will show off even more of them in 2011.
7. Vick Ballard, Mississippi State, Sr.: Nobody knew much about Ballard this time a year ago. They do now after he rushed for 968 yards and 19 touchdowns in his debut season in Starkville after coming over from junior college.
8. Onterio McCalebb, Auburn, Jr.: One of the premier home-run threats in college football, McCalebb is a quick-strike touchdown waiting to happen. Just ask LSU from a year ago. McCalebb has also bulked up and is more durable than he was when he arrived on the Plains.
9. Chris Rainey, Florida, Sr.: When he returned from his suspension last season, Rainey was the Gators’ top playmaker. Charlie Weis will see to it that Rainey gets touches as both a runner and receiver, and when he gets a step, look out.
10. Tauren Poole, Tennessee, Sr.: He’s not a burner, and he’s not exceptionally big, but Poole runs with his heart on his sleeve. He rushed for 1,034 yards last season and tied for the SEC lead with six 100-yard games.
Looking forward to the debate on this.

Of course he should be left out … can’t be one of the top 10 backs in the SEC if he has yet to play in the SEC. Not a slight from Low, just a fact.

You can’t have a great runningback until you have a decent O-Line. If our O-Line is consistent and can protect the rusher, then yes…..Crowell should make the list.
Running game depends on the O-LINE. THAT is the BIGGEST question!

It’s worth noting that Low went out of his way in the blog (which you can click on the link) that freshmen and incoming players are being considered in all of these rankings. I can see the arguments on both sides.

It’s all subjective now. The most important ‘rating’ will be at the end of the season after the games have been played.

He is essentially right where every incoming Freshman running back in the SEC should be. The SEC should have an abundance of talent at the postions when you figure the schools within the conference. Also I like the low ranking for him for a motivating tool aswell.

What a stupid column to even mention Crowe’s name as your discussion point of your column when Low was ranking EXPERIENCED SEC players…not incoming freshman!!! Go back to Low and ask him to rank the Top 10 INCOMING backs in the SEC…then you’ll have a story. This is apples and oranges.
Just cuz Low “went out of his way to say freshmen and incoming were being considered” doesn’t mean he really meant it (and truly considered them) and therefore, if I was the journalist I wouldn’t have even jumped on the poll and tried to “make a story” out of Crowell not being in it. Crowell won’t put up big numbers at Georgia, no one does at running back except rare exceptions like Moreno & Musa & Herschel. Richt’s only had 2 backs go for 1000+ in 1 season. Richt uses an ineffective platoon system, 10th n SEC last year, gets 100 yards against teams with winning records, 11th in SEC there.
Richt rotates his best most productive back, with 4 non-productive players. Crowell will likely end up the #2 rusher in 2011, behind King, who’ll put up Ealey type of yards, 700-800 yards on 150 carries, getting most of the carries due to experience. Crowell will maybe go for 500 yards at best. They’re not enough carries to go around for Crowell to get 1000 yards, he’ll need to share carries with King, Malcome, Thomas, and Murray (murray got 2nd most carries last year).
So Low is right.

College football fans obsess over kids like Crowell … anointing each of them the “second coming” or “the chosen one” before they’ve even touched a ball in college play. Then, in too many cases, it goes to their head … they start their royal strut and think the rules don’t apply to them (exhibit ‘A’ = Terrell Pryor). Then they get busted for something stupid or they don’t perform to the sky-high standards laid before them … and they get chewed up and spit out by the media and the fan base.
Crowell is 17 or 18 years old and he hasn’t played a down yet. Everybody take a deep breath and just wait and see what develops.

The real story is that Caleb King didn’t make the Top 10. I can’t really argue that he deserves to be there, but Georgia should always have one of the 10 best RB’s in the SEC (not because UGA players deserve to be ranked just because they play for UGA, but because there are only 11 other schools in the SEC).

Crowell is like any other young kid that is highly rated by the college world. He has all the potential there to be a very good back, but he will need to prove it on the field first. There is no shame in not being picked in the top 10, if you haven’t played a down yet. I would bet nobody had David pollack as a top ten player either, and look how he produced. ESPN’s lows predictions really don’t mean a lot as far as incoming freshman go, because he bases them on what those guys did last year in college. If Crowell, is as good as advertised, he will show it on the field and next year the ESPN writer will rate him in his top ten list. The young man certainly contains the raw skills to be a very good RB. He just needs to work hard and translate those skills to performance. I hope he does and the rewards will come then, If being picked for any ESPN list can be considered a reward.

Face it Dawg, there will be no thousand yard rusher at UGa this year. Georgia will be a pass first, pass second, run third and punt team this year. Good for 12th in the SEC.
How the 31 carries breaks down:
Caleb will get 10
Murray 8
Crowell 6
Thomas 4

6 carries x 5 ypc = 30 yards a game for Crowell x 13 games = @400 yards

This is another UGa embarrasement. True to our tradition established by CVD Georgia should ALWAYS have a top SEC RB and All-American RB candidate. You can’t win the SEC without a good backs and solid core at RB. Even Spurrier scrapped the old UF Fun N’ Gun of the 90s and has developed a ground attack at USCar. Florida will struggle this year as they did last year because they lack a SEC calibre RB to take pressure off the QB. But running game or no, the Gators hold an 8-2 advantage over MR, don’t they. However Micro-backs won’t work in the SEC without a true work horse. Tennessee is currently down and very beatable, however UGa must wallop them this year to keep them down. The Vols former AD drank his own kool-aid and went out and totally disrupted the football program with a poor hire. I sympathize with the Vols and we need a ball coach at UGa that understands & accepts our rich tradition of running the ball to championships.Presently in the SEC East, hands down Spurrier and his Gamecocks are the best when it comes down to the running game and should be the favorite to win the division again. Meanwhile the pass first option remains intact at UGa and the Dawgs will be fighting for second or third place again in the East Division this year.

Crowell, for all the hype, will have virtually no impact at running back this year at UGa, because of the the pass first, run later mentality and culture that exists there presently. And based on careful research on IC, I don’t believe he can be a consistent week in & week out dominating running back in the SEC. Yes he was highly recruited and yes I’ve seen the highlight reels, but he doesn’t strike anyone as a up and coming epic prodigy at RB as Hershel, Bo Jackson, or Marquis Dupree. It will boil down to how well he is coached and performs. He has an opportunity to a least duplicate what Lattimore did in SCar last year, but with the current coaching regime at UGa in place, he won’t be legendary in his freshman year. I will be shocked if he breaks 500 yard rushing, because Caleb King will finish with about 650-700 rushing yards if he gets all the carries and is lucky enough to stay out of trouble.

Richt and his staff arranged for the team’s offensive lineman, receivers, fullback and quarterback to gather during Crowell’s exit meeting in the indoor facility. The current players were dressed in gameday jerseys and looked up to Richt’s office, which overlooked the practice field.
At that point Richt, Crowell and his family left the office and went down to the field. By the time they arrived there, according to the letter, “the team was in an offensive alignment without a running back.” Crowell was then handed a jersey and stood in the vacant running back position.
“Coach Richt reported that the idea was to create a feeling for the PSA (prospective student athlete) that he was needed at the running back position that was left empty by the team,” the letter reads, adding that Richt was aware off the gameday simulation rule, but did not believe it applied in this case.
So, the coaching staff called the entire starting offense out to the practice field, with jerseys on, to effectively treat this kid like some sort of rock star and essentially promise a starting job? Wonder what King thinks of that? This might be one of the more pathetic and desperate recruiting stories I’ve heard.

It will matter a lot more if he is on the top ten list after the season is over. By chance, did Low list the top ten coaches in the SEC? Did Richt make the cut?

How in the world can you be rated at all as a running back in the SEC??????? He has not played 1 game yet. He is right where he should be, a potential prospect, and nothing more. It is no wonder these players have an inflated view of themselves and their abilities!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Do you believe IBM would make him a VP before he works 1 day for the company?

Non-starter. Crowell has not played a down of SEC football. He may be the most anticipated back to arrive in the SEC. You have to give credit to the backs that have been there, done that. This is really a non-story and a non-issue. We are really desperate for football aren’t we?

Real Dawgs Drink Power Aid,
You come onto a blog and start calling people idiots and other choice names. Are you a complete idiot? Hiding behind a computer and spouting crap like that. You are either a very poor example of an adult or a kid. Either way you need to grow up. These blogs do not give you the right to be ignorant and post comments about people you do not even know, and most likely if you said this stuff to their face, would be more than able and ready to show you the error of your ways. You are one sad human being if you think this is the way you converse in the real world. Do you even know what Marxist means?
I thought the AJC was suppose to monitor these blogs just a little bit, and yet remarks such as yours are allowed on here. Come on Jeff, comments like his, are way past the limit of spirited.

The Marxist kool-aiders and reprobates should be very happy with the fact that Georgia has no running back on this list of top SEC backs. They happily said UGa is better off without WE3. Then MR himself said because Caleb King has reformed the Dawgs are set at RB with the addition of a true freshman IC. Well reprobates MR has sat the kool-aid juice out again and you goons fought each other for the first cup until you guzzled it all up. Now MR will demand Bobo to resurrect the old, antiquated, FSU fastbreak offense of the 90s,which consisted of a dink & dump, short pass happy offense which played to the strength of the weak armed quarterback. Face it Dawg, there will be no thousand yard rusher at UGa this year. Georgia will be a pass first, pass second, run third and punt team this year. Crowell will end up splitting carries with 4 other guys, Murray, Thomas, Malcome, and King. There’s only @30 carries to split up, King & Murray will get over 50%, that leaves 15 carries between Crowell, Malcome, and Thomas. So look for Crowell to get 5 or 6 carries a game, until he learns how to passblock better than the other backs, which could be a while, like a season.

Nice article Jeff. Crowell is hyped and will end up splitting reps with 2 other feature backs plus Thomas mixing in. Unless he proves to be a grinder like Musa Smith, he won’t get more than 400 or 500 yards.

I don’t know if it is because the AJC has hyped him so much, but UGA fans are relying a little too much on Crowell saving the program. I am sure he is going to be a good player, but no recruiting services had him as a once in a generation type player that he is being made out to be. Granted, they are not always right, but I think the hype around this kid needs to go down a bit.

“npgator” – if you read most of the posts, most of the UGA fans don’t think he should be ranked in the top 10 yet. Jeff Schultz doesn’t think so either. It’s simply a way to get a lot of opposing fans riled up, making obnoxious comments to Dawg fans, and get corresponding foolishness from our supporters. Thereby, this gets lots of posts for Schultzie’s article and gets him in nice with his bosses even though it’s not much on the way of real journalism.

I am ok with the list besides Onterio McCalebb and Chris Rainey. Neither has produced at a high level consistently. Rainey and McCalebb are both fast, but they are not scary by any means like Lattimore or Trent Richardson. I guess that’s why they are behind those two, but they don’t deserve a Top 10 SEC backs billing. Neither does Crowell for that matter, cause he hasn’t even practiced in college or carried the ball in a live college situation. I’m a Georgia fan, and dang sure hope he holds up to his elite recruiting status, but he has to earn the distinction of a Top 10 SEC back, not just given to him based on his high school statistics.

I hope Crowell takes a humble attitude, works hard and forgets the all the hype that has been about him. This is the big leagues now compared to High School, and he will have to work his way for recognition. I hope he is a team player so that we can wipe the bad taste of our mouth, that we had with Ealey. Young Mr. Crowell has all of the the physical talent needed to play at this level. Now he has to show he can do it at this level mentally. If he can, and I believe he can, he will be special.

Last year, Dogs rushing went 800, 400, 300, 200. In other words, 4 guys split carries, 3 backs with Murray getting about 200. Ealey got 800, King 400, Thomas 300, Murray 200.
So this year, King gets 800, Crowell 400, Thomas 300, Murray 200.
No, Crowell will not make an impact, you can’t with Richt’s offensive pass oriented, rb rotation scheme.
Crowell might move up to #1 in the rotation in 2012 and get 700-800 yards, best he can hope for with pass happy Richt.

Crowell will get @5 carries a game, kid can’t passblock, teams will know Georgia’s running when Crowell’s in, so will shift to run defense, testing Crowell’s passblocking skills. Murray could get injured, so Richt won’t risk the season ending injury to his QB to get Crowell more reps. It takes away offensive potential when Crowell’s there, and makes Georgia easier to defend because likely it’s a run play.

I’d look for Caleb King to put up big numbers. King’s a great passblocker, and has a high per carry average. King is a Sr, knows the playbook inside & out, and gives offense max potential when he’s on the field. Just has to learn how to not fumble, and how to score more td’s.

Shoeless,
What good is Caleb King if he needs to learn how not to fumble and score more touchdowns as a Senior? Doesn’t matter if he runs it 99 yards on one carry if he can’t hold on to the ball. Shouldn’t take a guy 5 years to learn how to hold on to the ball and find the end zone. I’m not holding my breath on him, but he will allow Crowell to have a little more time to learn it all and get used to college game speed. Crowell will start from Game 1, and will be full time by Game 4.

I am counting on the UGA backs to play and do well in this order:
1.) Caleb King will respond as a senior and run hard and gain crucial yards. It is his last hooray. He can be decent.
2.) Kenny Boo Malcomb will come on strong and churn his legs and drop his shoulders and lunge forward time after time after time and he will look like a very, very good back with power. Once in the secondary, he will get his gravy yardage.
3.) The no name kid that is Carlton Thomas’ cousin will pick up some quick yds on unexpected bursts. He can help UGA this year, although he is diminuitive.
4.) So will Carlton Thomas.
5.) Crowell by mid October, if he works really hard and exhibits his wares, will be gravy. he could be far more useful late in the year. Time will tell.
I am more concerned about our QB and those Batman gloves worn in the awful UCF game. THEY must go. Can he win a big game is my major issue???

There is a reason why ..........
June 16th, 2011
10:52 am
The reasoning behind the rankings is UGA’s sad O line. Richt has not gone after BEEF every year, year in and out and when he does sign some big kid, he is called a project or he will be fine once his blown out knees mend or his back surgery is successful. We are always a patch work quilt of no names and bum knees and bad backs, bad shpoulders on the O line.
Folks ……………….. SEC ball is O line and D line STELLAR play. Period. We have been very deficient here and AU was much improved because ther BRAND NEW HC goes out and gets some O line and D line beef. UF and LSU, Alabama, and even sad old MSU got some BEEF. BEEF is why sad Colorado pushed UGA around in Boulder.
CMR has this year to refute all of these criticisms ……………. or it will be NEXT !!
Go Dogs.

I Crowell must earn a top 10 standing. This is a non story, you might as well have noted that Ken Malcome is not listed either. Both guys have the exact number of carries and yards.
It sucks that UGA will face 7 of the top 10 Rbs though.

No problem with Crowell being left out at this point. He’s a freshmen yet to even touch the ball.
Further, UGA has a track record in recent years of (a) not committing to the running game and (b) recruiting backs that just don’t work out.

Schultzie. Your top 10 running back is already there, and the Bobo/Richt brain trust moved him to back up linebacker!! I’m talking about 6′2″ 230lb. blaster, Richard “Duece” Samuel. They could use him like the Dolphins use Ronnie Brown, and Arkansas used Darrin McFadden. In a straight up “Wilddawg” direct snap formation. OR let him dot the “I” behind Figgins/Ogeltree, and Bean Anderson, Kenarious Gates, and Cordy Glenn (aka The Georgia Power Company), The kid’s a North/South bruiser, but explosive too (80 yd. TD vs. Arkansas as a Freshman!), Come on Coach Richt, move him back. This kid Amarlos Herrera is a Ray Lewis clone, so depth at linebacker will not be affected. The kid’s a running back. Either you realize that, or your just wasting a 6′2″ 230 lb. stud.

@Gip: You have to add it together. That’s 1700 yds. rushing, and that’s a down year. (Not bad for pass happy Richt). Keep in mind that Bama only had 500 more in 2010 with Ingram and Richardson in the backfield. If one guy had 1200 and the rest added another 500, we’d be talking about UGA having a great run attack. I agree that the running game needs improvement, but let’s keep it in perspective.
Expect about 2000 dispersed yards per season.
2010 – 1854
2009 – 2093
2008 – 1928

My concern with Isaiah. In the recruiting videos I watched, he was running through huge holes created by his offensive line. Probably not going to get that kind of room in the SEC. Hope and pray I’m wrong.

Look for UGA to finish #7-#11 in rushing in the SEC against winning teams. Last year got about 100 a game, almost last. Better than only Vanderbilt. The rushing game, offensive line, run audibles, and run production of secondary backs, is near the bottom of the SEC. Need a new RB coach. New o-line coach. New offensive coordinator with a better run scheme.

“So what are you thoughts on the Crowell being left off? Should we expect greatness right away?”
Well, according to Christian Robinson: “We’re not just lifting weights. We’re lifting weights to win a game on Saturday.”
???
So, by that logic, if Crowell is lifting weights (and lifting weights to win a game) greatness must be on the horizon.
Good grief. If the traditional methods (good coaching, sound tackling techniques, properly executing offensive plays from the playbook, etc.) do not work, then try something else.
This comes from chapter #4 of Richt’s “How to Become a Cutting Edge Football Coach” guide book. Better pick up the pace coach. The book has eighteen chapters.

Better watch out for Eddie Lacey and Dee Hart. Eddie Lacey outrushed everyone in shredding Michigan State last year and is ready for a breakout year now that he won’t be 3rd team behind Mark Ingram and Trent “the beast” Richardson. Dee Hart was our 5 star running back- he set the state of Florida high school record for tds in a season with 50 and was the MVP of the Army high school All American game after becoming the only back to ever rush for over 100 yards in the game. I believe the more heralded Crowell had something like 20 yards in the same all star game.

Crowell is #7 rb in SEC according to my projections. That’s based on what kind of competition he’s gone up against, also how many recruting services (rivlas, scout, espn) had him as a top rb, and so on. On my projections, he actually ranks a little higher than Marcus Lattimore did last season, so if that says anything, looks like a Championship season for Georgia. I project him to get 200 carries and break 1000 yards just barely.

HEY, ROCKET SCIENTIST, after reading other opinions on this blog it appears more Dawgs out there agree with me. Shut up the wimpy wining, throw away the kool-aid and wise up. People are allowed to critically analyze what they see in the UGa program , its not illegal yet. Right now a lot a of people are not as satisfied with the direction Georgia is going as you are and the AJC graciously provides an unbias forum of communication for those happy about 6-7 seasons like yourself and those who are unhappy like me. Since you probably never studied history I will help you out. Marxism is a theory and practice of Communism, which is the political and economical practice of Socialism including the labor theory of value , dialectical materialism, the class struggle, and dictatorship of the proletariat (elites) until the establishment of a classless society. I realize my explanation probably has confused you even more, but I will speak in historical football analogy to further help you. Before MR took the UGa job he was an OC at FSU for years, under Bobby Bowden. From 1987 to 2000 the Seminoles finished ranked in the top five. But during those 14 years of unprecedented success success the ‘Noles only won a measly two national titles. In fact, they could not beat the Miami Hurricanes when national championship implications were on the line and when they did, the “Noles lost more national championships than they won going 2-3 in such contests. The last national championship game Bobby Bowden or MR would coach in resulted in a highly disappointing 13-2 loss to Bob Stoops Oklahoma Sooners in 2000. The “Noles fans were livid and highly upset with MR’s playcalling in that game which featured only a short passing game by QB Chris Weinke to WRs and backs and virtually no attempt to to run the ball. Oklahoma had 14 years of film on the Noles offensive attack under Richt to study and knew they could shut it down and exposed the fact that Richt’s FSU attack had no consistent running game . After the game Bowden was hounded by questions of why FSU failed to try to run and why couldn’t the Noles offensive line run block as well as they pass blocked ? As Bowden struggled for answers, MR was packing his bags and fast break short passing offense for Athens and the Nole fans rejoiced and were glad to see Richt go until Bowden committed nepotism with OC position by installing his son Jeff (with no prior OC experience). This would be a bad decision by UGa to bring a pass first coach to a traditional run first school. Jim Donnan had UGa set up as a run first offensive attack and Richt had no choice but to win with the players he inherited from Donnan, thus from 2001 to 2005 UGa was deceptively and moderately successful. Then in 2006 a confident MR turned over the short pass offense to his protege Mike Bobo(with no prior OC experience) as expectations of a national championship soared in 2007 and evaporated that fateful night in Athens versus Saban and the Tide in 2008. It’s been all downhill ever since. So I call the kool-aid drinking lovers and followers of an underachieiving, can’t win the big game coaching regime Marxists, as in the first name of their leader. Get it ? You probably don’t, obviously you got to be blind, crazy or delusional to continue to follow a staff that is 2-8 vs.UF. This coaching regime has defiled our traditions and made UGa a national embarrasement instead of a national power. You Rocket Scientist may be happy about the losing situation at UGa, but excuse me for being defiantly critical of the mediocrity. Look don’t single me out, I’m not the only one calling it as I see it, currently MR is number ONE on the HotSeat on CoachWatch. And with the tradition, resources, and following at UGa, it’s safe to say he has rightfully earned that distinction. So instead of getting mad at people on the blogs, just relax and enjoy the last season of the PASS FIRST offense at UGa.

Mike Bobo, where are the Georgia running backs, all so highly-rated in recruiting rankings for which we gave Mark Richt credit for recruiting them, when you told us Mike Bobo and Mark Richt that you insist on a “Balanced Number of Plays – both passing and Running” ? I read a guy, Brandon Pledger on Bleacher Report say that – just give Mark Richt 2 more years on his blog there yesterday. Not this up-coming 2011-2012 season, but 2012-2013. Wait until 2012-2103, Brandon Pledger begs. I’ve heard a lot of really silly stupid statements from Richt-O-Files, but seriously before the season, even starts, and he is begging for us all to wait until not this season but the season AFTER this up-coming season. Takes the cake, Brandon Pledger – no wonder you don’t want a post about that quote in your blog responses – no wonder- Brandon Pledger.

Excuse me ? Kellen Moore is still the QB at Boise State, isn’t he ? We still have no one in the Secondary, do we ? We still have no one who has sacked a single QB on the entire roster, do we ? As bad as Boise State is on Special Teams, we still were # 85 in the nation in kick-off returns last year, weren’t we ? Boise State still has a lot better pass defense than we have, don’t they ? And, we have no wide receiver, still, don’t we ?
Given all that, Crowell, who hasn’t proved he can block at all, is going to run the football for our pass-happy Mike Bobo who red-shirted the # 12 overall pick of the 1st Round best running back here at The University of Ground Attack in over 2 dozen years so we only got to see Knowshon Moreno for only 2 years, behind an OL that has 5 OL on the entire roster who ever played 1 down and not 1 down well none of them, with no Fullback, and oh yeah, that sets up pretty for Crowell – when what we have instead is a QB who stole 8 runs a game every game last year from the tailbacks averaging less than 2 yards a carry.
Man, we are going to win the National Championship now, now that we have Crowell. This is our year. No doubt of that.

Crowell comes in at a good time, much like Walker, after a 6-7 season. Richt has been, hopefully, ripped of his arrogance, and humbled. You would think Richt now is aware that if he doesn’t get @200 rush per game, against winning teams, instead of @100 yards a game, then he’s not going to win 7 games. Crowell is the best back Richt has ever recruited. If Richt wastes this kind of talent, he needs to be fired.

I. Crowell, RB, was the #1 must have in the recuriting class. Now, you have to take advantag and wear him out. If Richt trusts Crowell, and Crowell doesn’t fumble, if Crowell gets 15 carries a game, he goes for 1000 yards. It’s not really an option, it has to happen, you have to let this guy get a shot, and trust him to carry the offense. He’s done it before against the best competition in high school.

It doesn’t matter because he hasn’t proven anything. The kid is a true freshman and I am confident that he is going to be a really good player for us, but he shouldn’t be listed with the SEC’s best until he can prove it on the field. I hope he comes out this season and runs for over 1,000 yards. Also, I think Jeff Demps is a better RB than Chris Rainey.

tOSSuP, sir, Isaiah Crowell is ranked the # 1 RB in nation for 2011 by Scout.com and the # 2 overall best football player in the nation by Scout.com, but it is NOT because of his speed and he is nowhere near as fast as 4.25 at 6′ 1″ and 225 lbs by Herschel Walker who is now 50 and still runs 4.35.
4.43 Nike time by Isaiah Crowell 2011 in 40-yard dash, just for the 2011 recruiting class alone makes him the
# 142 in the nation just in 2011 recruiting class in terms of speed
# 53 in the nation just in 2011 recruiting class in terms of speed just counting those recruited as RB
There are 7 pages of 20 players per page just in the 2011 recruiting class who are faster than Isaiah Crowell, and over one-third of those were recruited as a Running Back, as was he, sir.
At 210 lbs and 5′ 11″ tall, he is not the load Herschel Walker still is, either.
He is no Herschel Walker, who ran over people and then ran away from them.
Isaiah Crowell does neither. It is not possible, sir.
There are 5 recruiting classes which make up the 2011 season. Each of the other classes already on campus and already have practiced and proved they can block and understand a playbook.
There are therefore 710 college football players 2011 who are faster than Isaiah Crowell and 210 players recruited as running backs, as he, who are faster 2011 than Isaiah Crowell.
Jeffrey Demps is not 1 of them, nor is he anywhere near as big as Isaiah Crowell. Demps is a itty-bitty 5′ 9″ and 162 lbs. which explains why Jeffrey Demps has averaged 634 yards of rushing every year at Florida. Jeff Demps has 90 carries per season and these are 13 game seasons which isn’t even 7 carries a game, average over his entire career; and, now this season is Jeff Demps True Senior Season.
I don’t think either one are a proper comparison, if you don’t mind me pointing out the truth. And, if you do.
15 carries average per game for Isaiah Crowell 2011 for Mike Bobo and Mark Richt ?
If Isaiah Crowell only gets 15 carries against Boise State, South Caroilina and Florida, Georgia will have Lost the only 3 football games they play this entire season. But, it is not because of his speed. If you are expecting Isaiah Crowell to average 7 yards a carry, every carry all season long starting with let’s say South Carolina, you are out of your mind.
Give the gentleman half a chance, if you would be so kind sir. Let him come in here and try to learn the play book, figure out how to block, and somehow figure out to get on the football field using those specific skills. If you think he is the fastest RB in the nation, or that he is going to run away from 710 football players who are faster than he; he has no hope of meeting your expectations and I will be back in here to remind you that you are a DISNEYdawgs.com
That is wholly presposterous to expect 15 carries at 7 yards a carry net. What is he playing in a void ? No one needed around him ? No defense ? Great Scott. Please post more about National Championships (which would be our 7th, not 6th which we already achieved in 1980 – over 3 decades ago.)
1300 yards is not unreasonable but not on 15 carries; he does only average 15 carries and we are sunk. And, if our fan base expects Isaiah Crowell to speed his way past every team in America except for 1 guy at 1 school, then you can just sign up at DISNEYdawgs.com

Folks,
Granted that Richt was successful in signing Crowell, but isn’t he jus this year’s version of the “number one back in the country” that has signed with UGA? Just in recent memory, I remember the same bs about Richard Samuels, Caleb King, Waushaun Ealey, and probably others. Without exception, they completely failed to live up to the hype. Why do you think that is? Could it just possibly be that Mark Richt cannot coach? That is what an objective person would conclude.
What is obvious is that UGA does not have one of ESPN’s top ten backs. How many of those backs are from UGA? Several. Why didn’t they sign with UGA? Maybe it was because they were not pursued agressively because the UGA scouts did not see the talent. Kinda like Cam Newton having “potential as a tight end.” It might be that high school coaches know that Richt is not a coach and are influencing their stars to sign at schools that have real foot ball coaches.
Everybody has been conditioned now to “give another year” to Richt at about $3M. I hope we have a good season, but the facts point another disappointing years.
UGA fans will continue to be disappointed until someone like McCavity or Adams or the Regents get the kahunas to fire Richt and his clowns. Until this happens, we just dig the hole deeper.
I wish the best for Isaiah Crowell, but the facts show that he will just be another flop unless a real coach can actually coach him up to the level he deserves to be coached up to. We are letting these recurits down.

Considering the struggles of UGA running backs recently, I think its fair to leave Crowell out of the mix until he hits the field and officially impresses. Frankly, I think he won’t be as reliant on the O-line as he’ll be reliant on the Dawgs’ defense being more dominant this year and creating a need for a more running balanced offense.

That and good Christian coaching makes Dawgs best with winning SEC that causes BCS win. All we got to do is put Isaiah on field to be next Herschel and replacing that fumblin bum Ealey. Now with Ealey and bad attitude casted out we can display Dream Team talents and winning SEC.

1000 yards in these days of 14-game seasons for the top teams, which we certainly have not been, is passé. It is like asking for a 10-win season. 10-win seasons in 14-game seasons for the top teams, is not even Top 25.
2008 we did the same.
Less than 15 carries a game vs Alabama, Florida and Georgia tek. We played 3 teams all of 2008 who finished in the Top 25 of the AP Poll. We lost to all 3. We ran the football to Knowshon Moreno 14 carries a game those 3 games. Why were we a total flop in 2008 ? Because Mike Bobo does not run the football to a guy like Knowshon Moreno 27, 28 carries a game. You can make up all the excuses you want to about 2008, but the biggest problem we had in 2008 was that Mike Bobo refused to even attempt to run the football.
# 56 Rushing Offense 2008 for Mike Bobo, handed Knowshon Moreno

@Thomas Brown, I’d argue that Willie Martinez was the biggest problem we had in 2008 (God, I still miss BVG), not that I want to defend Bobo. Your point is not best made by citing games in which the opposing team jumps to a commanding lead with a lot of time left. You have a point that we don’t run it enough when we have talented backs. And when we do, we like to give all of our backs about equal carries so we don’t risk any of them getting into a rhythm.

DawginTX,
Yes. That is so obvious to point to Willie Martinez. But, it absolutely does not explain the Offensive, Special Teams and off-the-field disappointments of 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 nor 2010.
We haven’t beat the teams who finished in the Top 10 of the AP Poll, not with 3 wins the years we lost 4 games 2001, 3 games 2005, and 4 games of 2006. The other 9 games against teams finishing in the Top 10, we lost every game.
Kool-Aid to drink that now that Willie Martinez is gone (when I was here saying every day of every post, that it had to be Willie Martinez AND MIKE BOBO who had to go.), that Georgia will be great, or at least the # 11 team in Wins all-time with 6 national championships in 1-A football as we most assuredly are. Richt said he was standing by BOTH Willie and Bobo. He then fired his college roommate, reluctantly; and, now we have to go back all the way to 1953 to find a season in which we lost more games than the 7 games we lost WITHOUT Willie Martinez.
Our running backs are not taught how to hold the football. They don’t know how to block and they don’t know when and how to flare out in the flats and catch a pass. In addition, they don’t know how to stay out of trouble, nor run the football.
Our recruiting leaves us with big huge gaping holes at some positions (fullback, secondary) while stockpiling at others (tight end, linebackers.)
Our wide receivers haven’t done anything in years. They are not winners. They don’t make the big catch against a great team, taking them down. We have no one at these positions.
Our secondary is the worst secondary this football program has ever put on the field and tried to pass off as a secondary. We watch as the top secondary players are plucked from this state to the Top 6 teams in The SEC neighboring us, who then beat us with them.
We yank players around willy-nilly and move them to positions they have zero experience at, and then back the next year.
We announce Joe Tereshinski III is the Starter at QB and put Joe Cox # 2 and have Matthew Stafford worse on the Depth Chart than both. In 2005, we have 1 hand tied behind our backs vs Florida with Joe Tereshinski III trying to play QB, and still nearly won the game.
2002 we go 0-11 on 3rd down conversions against a team who absolutely sucked and fired their coach for sucking for years, but Ron Zook beat Mark Richt because he had a better offense. Florida would end up not even ranked in the Coaches’ Poll Top 25.
2007 we lost to a 6-6 South Carolina team and were drubbed by the vols, yet neither were any good and South Carolina didn’t even play in a bowl game 2007, but they beat us.
We try a field goal on the opening drive last game against a hapless team who 3 nobody teams beat, on a 4th and inches at the goal line.
2008, we hand the football to 1st Round NFL Draft Pick Knowshon Moreno an average of 14 carries and threw him the ball an average of less than twice a game in the only 3 games against the only 3 teams we faced 2008 Alabama, Florida and Georgia tek and we lost all 3 of those games.
We redshirted Knowshon Moreno so we saw the best UGA RB in over 2 Dozen Years here, only 2 years and then gone as the 12th best player in America.
Excuse me, the world.
We try for years on end to kick-off to the corner. Still pulling my hair out on all those.
We are # 85 in the nation in kick-off returns last season with arguably one of the best kick-off return men in the history of the game. We had such a horrid season again last year after not being ranked the previous year (RELOAD the DISNEYdawgs.com said in here this time last year), that even our Punter was in a funk. What does that tell you ?
We have an attitude problem. And, it starts with playing favorites with the likes of Caleb Darnell King on offense. For lesser transgressions, better football players have been kicked off this football team at running back, than Caleb King has.
We play Favorites, especially on offense.
For 11 years now, we have put together clearly the worst “coaching staff” in America.
Now, our head coach says football is too violent.
No, it’s not Willie Martinez. He was just part of it. Obviously. We have a whole host of it remaining. Our players are not conditioned and don’t give a hoot. Our fans fill their heads with how great they are, and they don’t even try to get anything done on the field and play around off the field not preparing themselves. We announce we fixed that by promoting a guy who has been in the weight room every day since the 1st day of the 2001 season. What was he doing then ? Motivating the players ? If so, why did that take 10 years to promote him, finally ?
No sir. The problem is not Willie Martinez, have not been Willie Martinez and still aren’t Willie Martinez.

I have heard this again and again and again about the 2008 season that allowing 31, 42 and 29 consecutive points is somehow just the fault of Willie Martinez, like our offense was not 3 and out every single series.
31, 42 and 29 consecutive points allowed is a problem of the defense AND OFFENSE.

Stop trying to stick blame on Coach Richt. The blaming deserves to being in two places of the Adams and the stinky players. Every one konws that Adams choking recruiting and we got to fix that so Coach Richt can recruit without restrictions like Bammers. The we got to be able to cut loose stinky players that not playing up to deserving level of Dawgs. That frees schollies for talent that appreciates opportunity to expose for NFL and ladies in Athens while running campus. When we get stuck with bad attitude that fumbles like Ealey we got to cut thems loose. Not being able to recruit ahainst Bammers and cast out those that not playing using talents are to be blaming on Adams. Saban able to recruit with no limits and then cut loose stinkys that don’t play to talents. Coach Richt is being hancuffed by Adams and we got to gets McG to stands up Adams. Then Dawgs have more talent and play by same rules as Bammers to get us winning repeat SECs and BCS champs.
