Michael Adams turned to Frank Crumley after Damon Evans' resignation. (Phil Skinner/AJC)
(Updated at 12:30 with comments from Crumley)
Frank Crumley, who spent nearly two months trying to calm the seas at Georgia following the Damon Evans fiasco, may be on the list for a more permanent fix-it job in Tennessee.
While this hardly qualifies as official interest by Tennessee, the Knoxville News Sentinel has listed Crumley, Georgia’s executive associate athletic director, as a potential candidate for the Volunteers’ vacated A.D. job. Mike Hamilton not surprisingly resigned from the position on Tuesday, just days before Tennessee is scheduled to meet with the NCAA’s Committee on Infractions to face potential violations in football and basketball.
The newspaper listed seven candidates within the SEC while acknowledging that “the search will extend nationwide.” Crumley has been Georgia’s associated AD for finance and business since 2007. He was the interim replacement for Evans from July 5 to Aug. 31 in 2010 and was praised for the job he did following Evans’ resignation for a DUI arrest in Buckhead.
Whoever gets the Tennessee job will be stepping into an inferno and possibly inheriting probation in the two major revenue-producing sports. But Tennessee also has one of the larger athletic budgets in the country, top facilities and competes in the SEC, so it’s viewed as one of the premier jobs.
UPDATE:
Crumley said he was not aware that he was named as a potential candidate, and it follows that he hasn’t been contacted. But he affirmed that anybody in his position would be interested in a job like that.
“Any job in the SEC would be a great job to have, but I have a great job right now,” he said. “They’re going to get some great candidates. Tennessee is probably at around $100 million [with their athletic budget], and we’re at $89 million. Part of that is because their stadium is so big. Texas, Ohio State and Tennessee are at the top.”
Crumley said he was not a candidate for the Georgia job before Greg McGarity was hired as Evans’ replacement.
“Dr. Adams told me up front that his goal was to look outside first and if he didn’t find somebody, then he would include internal candidates,” he said.

Doubtful. Considering the revolving door at the Athens-CC jail for UGA players in recent years, why would Tennessee want to chance more of the same? Better to look elsewhere for less negative history.

SSIgator,
I am tired of Gator fans making arrest comments about georgia. have you checked the blotter in the last seven years? It started with Zook and got worse under Meyer. Be thankful that Muschamp had the guts to get rid of Jenkins for you. You know he was good for another 2 or 3 trips to Alachua Co. pokey. Oh, and I almost forgot about Will Hill last week. Don’t throw stones @ glass houses there buddy. Urban isn’t too far away from Tressell. Let’s suspend a player for meaningless games, and reinstate him for the good ones. I seem to remember a player making death threats, and miraculously being reinstated in time for the Cocktail party. Let’s suspend my star LB for a quarter for trying to blind another player. I don’t think I need to go on. But let’s just for fun. let me steal a credit card from a dead person, gun charges, coach fights with fraternity. player breaks in to a tow yard. Numerous drug possessions. Coach threatens a newspaper reporter. your only saving grace was that Tebow was there for four years. he helped divert a lot of that negativity, because of the strong character and faith he had. What happened when he left, your coach checked out. coincidence I think not. And with that I will say “good day to you sir!” No need for reply “I say good day to your sir”

I agree with UGA Insider. Why don’t you write about how these, in your opinion, poor athletes can afford their tattos and bail money to get out of jail. Techie Fans,
Why don’t you all comment more on your own blogs and articles about tech. when they are on the AJC? You spend more time spouting stupid crap on the UGA blog than you do on your own. You even complain about everything tech. on your own blogs, even when it should be good news for your team. It is sad when you are so obsessed by your hate of UGA that it controls your life.

It Ain’t Rocket Science, you hung over this morning or is this your more cheerful side. Not much to hate about UGA from a Tech point of view, now days. We are both living in the middle class. Looks to me like you have a little problem with Alabama. How did you pick them out when there are so many Georgia could hate in the SEC. You don’t even play Alabama every year.

GT,
The answer is quite simple GT, it is football, not my whole life. It would be nice to come and read these blogs and not see them become a a childish bunch of stupid comments against other teams though. You give respect where it is due, and Alabama has built quite a program up, whether anybody likes it or not. Doesn’t mean I like them, just that I recognize that they are pretty darn good and deserve the Kudos.
As for being hungover, I don’t drink. If there is not much to hate about UGA from a tech. point of view these days, I suggest you read the blogs on AJC, since enough of your loyal fans, seem to delight in coming onto AJC blogs and spewing a bunch of crap and childish comments.

Well, no matter what, UT is going to have the hammer drop down on them from NCAA. I think they should put Pat Summitt sp? in charge. She has had no issues, bleeds orange and white, and takes no crap. I couldnt see her trying to cover up for anybody at any time. If not her go completely out of the box and bring somebody in that knows how to control their staff, and deal with rule breakers swiftly and harsh. Any person coming to the school breaks an NCAA rule, your gone, no questions it just that easy. Hell bring in somebody from West Point.

IARS you took a shot at Bama, didn’t sound like much respect there to me, but then I do drink so perhaps my perception of reality is dim. As for a “bunch of crap” from Tech bloggers it is a bite like Spurrier and Fulmer. The old ball coach just can’t help himself, Fulmer, the pumpkin, just makes it to easy.

OK, I guess Crumley is a friend of yours or he asked you to get his name out there…Maybe just to get a raise from UGA. The fact is he has NO CHANCE of being the AD at Tennessee. None. Mike Hamilton would have a much better shot of getting the job back, than Crumley does. Anyway, nice try and I hope he gets a raise out of it. What a waste of time (including mine).

@legionaire,
Your phony assault stories are ridiculous.
Truth be told, we felt sorry for the UGA fans the last two times UGA played at Neyland.
It was no more competitive than UT Martin. We understand UGA’s problem well because we saw the same stubbornness and slow decay with Coach Fulmer.
There were many in denial in our own fan base just like the UGA deniers here.
Last year, Coach Dooley hired good assistants and you can see the improvement of the team from game one.
When it is all said and done, he will be remembered as a good fundamental coach who came in during a very tough time and got us back on the road to success.

GT,
I did not say I like them, I simply said they have a good team this year. If you know anything at all about football, you have got to like their defense and their runner. SC’s Lattimore may be a load but this kid Richardson is no slouch.
If we get a runner like that, we would be special on offense also. Maybe Crowell will be one in time, but he has a learning curve first to get down.
Don’t much care what you say or any GT fan says about the other coaches, because that is not my problem. Like I said, when GT can beat up on UGA a little more than 1 out of 10 times, then, they can talk the talk because they walk the walk. At least if they are going to talk crap, be intelligent about it instead of resorting to childish name calling and remarks.
