Andrew Bynum has some baggage but he would give Hawks a legitimate center. (AP photo)
The other day I wrote that it might be time for the Hawks to part ways with Josh Smith– not just because he’s the most likely trade candidate in their core, but because it’s becoming clear that he’s getting tired of being blamed for everything when something goes wrong.
The Smith-bashers in town favored the column. The Smith fans hated it, some taking it as another media assault on Smith. Fact is, as I wrote, I agree with Smith that he takes more blame for the team’s shortcoming than he deserves.
But that column sparked immediate trade rumors, including this one: Smith and Kirk Hinrich to Los Angeles Lakers for Andrew Bynum and Ron Artest. Barring other moves, that would leave the Hawks with a starting five of Bynum (center), Ron Artest (small forward), Al Horford (power forward), Joe Johnson (shooting guard) and Jeff Teague (point guard).
That trade is nowhere close to reality right now — it was concocted by media members for the sake of discussion, and because it seems plausible. The Lakers could be looking to move Bynum after his postseason meltdown, and they also may pursue a deal for Orlando’s Dwight Howard, which would make Bynum expendable. (One outlet, Hoopsworld, also is speculating whether the Clippers will pursue Smith.)
Bynum obviously has had his issues. But he would give the Hawks their first legitimate center in years and allow Horford to move to his more natural position of power forward. If the way Teague played against Chicago in the playoffs was not an aberration, suddenly the Hawks could be set at point guard and center, and when is the last time we could say that?
So I’m not saying this trade is going to happen. But since there seems to be so much interest in this topic, I figured I’d turn it over to you. What would you think about a Smith-Hinrich for Bynum-Artest deal? We’ll also put up a poll and see how the voting goes.

After Josh told Drew to F-Off, a few days later Smith was attempting to garner support for a Drew “Coup”
http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/04/09/might-hawks-josh-smith-cost-coach-larry-drew-his-job/
A real class act, a guy who pushes a coach, and tells another to F-off. This team has always lost the big game with Smith, and always will. He’s a disruptive headcase, and that’s why we failed to trade him last year.
ZaZa Vs. Smith
May 26th, 2011
3:12 pm
April 10, 2007 — THE NBA must be thrilled about the graceful 24 hours it experienced Sunday/Monday. Aside from Miami Beach police playing ring around (James) Posey in the early a.m., the Hawks suspended Josh Smith two games yesterday after Mike Woodson banished him to the locker room during Atlanta’s loss in Philly for calling him names he’d only heard from rappers.
My first thought? What took the coach and GM Billy Knight so long to crack down on this remarkably skilled, exceptionally infantile and exceedingly selfish 21-year-old?
For three seasons I’ve written about Smith’s vulgar disrespect for Woodson, his assistants and a teammate or two. Yet, for the most part, his boorish behavior has been unchecked. As far as I know, there has been no loss of significant minutes or money. At the very least, he’s been privately docked some insignificant dough.
Last year, Smith’s belligerence got so out of hand, I’m told, Zaza Pachulia pinned him to the Hawks’ locker room wall after a game.
“Talk to me like you just did on the court,” the 6-foot-11, 250-pound Georgian warned, in essence, “and you’ll miss the rest of your career.”
This season the league fined Smith 25G for saluting heckling fans with a finger on each hand up while walking off the court after being ejected from a Bobcats game.
His apology the next day maintained such conduct was uncharacteristic. I maintained it was completely characteristic.
I maintain he’s perfectly understood. From what I know, he’s trouble looking for trouble.
Two summers ago, a source swore he was in a club when the under-age Smith was asked to leave after acting up when a bartender refused to serve him. That’s when things almost got of hand.
“Josh kept threatening he was going home to get his gat and was coming back with his peeps,” the source asserted. “Thank goodness Josh Childress was there. He kept calming down Smith and telling him to chill. Finally, he got him out of there before anything physical or worse happened.”
Yup, if I’m the Hawks, Smith’s the guy I want to bankroll this summer as my franchise player. The predicament is, if they don’t, we all know there will be at least one team (and all it takes is one) who’ll be more than willing to take a five-year, $50 millions-$60 million guaranteed gamble the season after next (when he becomes free) on such a talented head case.
In the meantime, I’m left wondering why the Hawks finally decided to discipline Smith. Was his obscene outburst so public that Woodson and Knight had no other choice? Or was it his new vocabulary words that sent management over the edge?

Smoove is firing Drew
May 26th, 2011
4:44 pm
He started his campaign to have him fired shortly after Drew benched him. Going to the other players, poising the well, so to speak. The majority of the players really hate Josh, and went to Drew immediately, and told him to cover his back.
They can’t trade Smoove…they did try, and he was passed on because of his personal issues. Management is weak, and don’t understand the effect of letting a 25 year old kid run the team.
My guess is, Smith stays, Drew goes.

I’m glad Mike Brown got to coach the Lakers. Thats great because it means that there are still at least TWO GREAT COACHES on the market who would be good for the Hawks upcoming coaching vacancy. I’m sure Larry Drew will get fired, I just dont know when its going to happen. Meanwhile, I would recommend the Hawks to start interviewing RICK ADLEMAN and JERRY SLOAN. Either of those coaches would do wonders with the Hawks talent. However, the Hawks must move swiftly because those two future hall-of-fame coaches will not stay on the market unemployed much longer.

No ! if its any one we should trade its joe he getting paid more than lebron and wade (not put together) is his production any where near them.. no.. smith is a good player, only reason yall want him gne is because the jumpers he takes maybe if we get a coach that shows him how much he is better in the hole rather than taking jumpers.. I say trade jj and hinrich for a productive shooting guard, like a Roy blazers would like to get younger at the point and joe can run point and hinrich does.. and go get a free agent Center with the money you save by trade jj and kirk..
Heres my starting five 1.Jeff 2. Roy, 3. Josh, 4 Al 5. the free agent
NOw please dont tell me thats not a great lineup

Instead of attacking the messenger, maybe you could attack the message, prove SI isn’t a real source, prove he didn’t really push the coach, tell the coach to F-his mother, etc, etc???

Yes Josh Smith has been undermining my ability to bring out the very best in Jeff Teague its why we sat him for 56 games and started Bibby. All Smith’s fault for questioning that.
He is so big and intimidating. He is also keeping Joe Hinrich and Crawford from playing to their 30 year old potentials. He needs to be disciplined.
He is the reason Horford struggles against bench players and the reason Horford can’t guard Dwight or Bargnani or Dirk or Gasol. Smith just gets in the way. Bastard.
Come on down Bynum, we have all the knee braces and Fruit Loops you need. Atlanta is the happiest city in America, you WILL enjoy it.
Josh Smith's Weight
May 26th, 2011
6:56 pm
Josh Smith has experimented with different weights ever since they started playing him at center.
I can’t find an article on him being lazy but I can find an article where Josh Smith and lazy@ss veteran Kobe Bryant reached out to Olajuwon to work on their post games before it became shiek thing to do.
”
This doesn’t mean that they’re not learning, however, or that their time with Olajuwon had a negative impact on their post games. In fact, perhaps due to their summer workouts, both Bryant and Smith internalized Olajuwon’s advice and looked to be more active in the post last season. Bryant spent 19.4 percent of his time in the post, an unbelievably high number for a guard, which equaled the amount of time spent in the post by guards Dwyane Wade (6 percent), Brandon Roy (6.3 percent) and Vince Carter (7.1 percent) combined. Smith worked 18.7 percent of his offense in the post, which was significantly more than the aforementioned forwards James (6.3 percent), Odom (9.4 percent), Lewis (12 percent) and Deng (6.9 percent). Ultimately, it’s quite common for a player to experience a drop in efficiency with a large increase in attempts in a certain area, highlighting what tends to be a negative relationship between frequency and efficiency.”
and excerpts about him needing to maintain weight to bang inside with PFs and Centers who arent you know 6′8 230.
“I heard that Josh Smith has added some size, so I emailed him and he said he’s gained “maybe 10 pounds of muscle.” -Lang Whitaker, October,2008
:::::::
SLAM: In the last 20 postseasons, a 23-16-8-2 game has only happened nine times. You, Hakeem Olajuwon (2), Shaquille O’Neal (3), Pau Gasol and Brad Daugherty (2)were the players to accomplish it. What is it like to be able to have a game of that caliber?
JS: Just to be mentioned with the names that you just named are unbelievable. Those are Hall of Fame players and players that been effective in this league for a long time. I just have to keep pushing and keep being positive and just keep doing whatever I can in order to help this ball club win.
SLAM: Do you think people watching really understand what you’re bringing to the game, who you’re guarding on the floor–I saw you on Noah and Deng–and the mistakes that you clean up around the basket through defense?
JS: No, they don’t. But people that know basketball know it. But the people that just watch the game and don’t know what’s going on and don’t know the different coverages and things that we have to do, they’ll never understand it. So it’s kind of like a win/lose. You win because with the people that know basketball, they understand and see what you’re doing. The people that just watch the game just to watch it is just something you can’t fight.
# Did Shaq, Dream, Pau, and Daugherty also shoot 8/22 in their games as well??

Good questions and straight talk from a player who does it all. People who know basketball appreciate what Josh brings every game. Good luck to Josh and the Hawks.
#
Ronald Posted: May.12 at 9:50 pm
@Rigo: The 8/22 stat was a bit misleading. He took a few shots at the end of the shotclock and missed a few bunnies which he got the rebound and placed it back in/got fouled on.

8/22 stat was misleading. I agree. I liked a rare glimpse into Smith. Great set of questions.
:::::::::
Josh Smith
Smith was 245 pounds of solid muscle early in the summer but has shed weight since then, mostly by accident, but his summer work was as much philosophical as it was physical.
“I wasn’t trying to lose it. I didn’t do it on purpose. But earlier in the summer I started working out twice a day and the weight just came off. I’m down to 230 now, and I really need to put five more pounds of muscle back on.
“I wanted to work more on my decision-making than anything. I handle the ball so much on the fast break and in transition that I wanted to make sure I’m thinking the game the way I need to be. I also worked on my handles and knocking down that mid-range jumper. I’m really not worried about the 3-point ball right now. We have so many guys on this team that can make that shot.
“I don’t have any business being out there this season with Joe Johnson, Mike Bibby, Jamal Crawford, Marvin, Mo and [Jeff] Teague all doing work out there. I have to focus on working in the cracks and making sure that people respect my mid-range game. And if they don’t, we have to make them pay for not respecting it.”

The Hawks are kinda like the Bulls without their defense, meaning they are predictable…If any change has to be made its the system on offense and defense…
…Our bigs were outside the paint way too many times giving up rebound after rebound
…We dribble our way to bad shots or forcing it as the shot clock ran out
…We hardly ever got any fast break points
…Players didn’t know what to do once JJ got swarmed including JJ
…Too much switching on defense which led to our bigs being left on an island
…Nobody except for Josh and Teague attacked to basket
…Effort Effort Effort
Until you address those things with new players and/or coaching staff nothing will change…I don’t know who needs to be traded and what we need in return, but management needs to figure out an identity before anything…We are not outstanding at anything, just ok and that will not get you anywhere in this league…JJ is the only player on this this team that commands a double team and in my eyes they need to focus on bringing in a player(s) that compliments him more than anything…Yes, he’s a high paid player, but what team in this league doesn’t have a player on their team making that kind of money…HIS contract of far from the problem, because as an NBA franchise every team has a high paid player, its the other contracts like Zaza, Marvin and so-on…As for this Smith/Bynum trade, I say NNNNNNOOOOOOO…I understand wanting to trade, but you don’t trade a knucklehead for 2 knuckleheads…GET A BONAFIED SYSTEM BEFORE TRYING TO RID YOUR PLAYERS!!!!!

New York Knicks power forward Amare Stoudemire is not the biggest fan of Atlanta Hawks center Al Horford.
According to ESPN.com, Stoudemire and Horford exchanged verbal shots this week.
“He don’t want to see me, man,” Stoudemire told ESPN. “I watched him play in Florida [in college], and I’ve seen him play a few years in Atlanta. We have two different games.”
Horford was not intimidated by Stoudemire’s remarks.
“I don’t understand what he means by that, ‘He don’t want to see me,’” Horford said to ESPN. “Like we’re supposed to be scared of Stoudemire. Ain’t nobody scared of him. We’re all grown men, so it’s all good.”
When the two battled it out on the court Wednesday night, though, Stoudemire and the Knicks walked away with a 102-90 win.

People just need to stop all this madness about trading Josh Smith. Some of you guys need to be thinking about moving Marvin,Etan,Collins,Josh P(give him back to the lakers),and Magnum Rolle.J-Smoove is a great player and Bynum and Arteset is not what this taem needs at this point there is way more prolems with those two then josh throwing up a couple of ill-advised shots. Those two you have to worry about injuries and cheap shots and you think this team lack mental toughness this is a whole different ball game with fragile minded people. One of them see a therapist not saying anthing is wrong with that but he might just spazut on us and he getting old.The other like to take ill-advised shots and not the one that involve the ball or a play and his knees older than him .That would be a real pasty move.So in other words NOOOOOOOOOOOO,NOPE,NAW,and NO THANKS to that deal and any other you can think of.

He Cuss out Drew? Who hasnt? Drew gets no respect from his player. Drew is a scrubb. Smith is Woodsons boy!.
Horford backs away from responsibility. Is extremely soft on the front line. Is selfish and his stats are average as best. He brings very little to the table except when josh or others play defense Horford waits around for a WELFARE rebound. Dude, plays some D.
TRADE AL “IM SCARED OF AMARE” HORFORD NOW!

Put my vote in for the trade Soft Al now. Yes, he a press favorite but come on, we are talking a career 12 pt 8 rebound guy… How in the Hell is that worth keeping? Hes not the talent that josh is and Al is extremely selfish in demanding to play power forward when we already have a very good one in Josh. He sacrifices the team chemistry with his selfish demands rather than embrace his role as center. the hawks are no better this year than last. Get rid of Al now!

I know everyone says JJ cannot be traded. But did you see the Bulls game last night. How badly do they need a 2 that can score. D-Rose cannot do it on his own offensively. I know Da Bulls have coveted JJ in the past. We could even pay some of his salary next year. Here is the plan: trade JJ to Bulls and ask very little in return(the main reason to trade him is to dump that albatross of a salary). Maybe we could get that big foreign center for JJ or an aging Carlos Boozer(did you see he was on the bench during a lot of crunch time). Just a thought cuz I see the Bulls needing to upgrade from D-Rose and the Defenders.

Trading Josh Smith for Andrew Bynum is trading a lazy@ss unprofessional punk (JSMOOVE) for a tall no-talent coward bum who is allways injured and contributes almost nothing (BYNUM). Bynum wouldnt help the Hawks to anything except we would now have a punk (Bynum) who tries to act like a tough-guy because of his size. Did you see the cheap shot he gave to JJBerrea’s neck in the Lakers loss to the Mavs. Berrea could have gotten injured or could have been paralyzed for life or may have even ended up in a wheelchair and Bynum tries to apologize to patch things up with Berrea. Berrea and the Dallas Mavericks should have filed assault charges against Bynum and Bynum should have been siting in the Los Angeles county jail until he serves time for that assault. THAT IS WHAT SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED. These Laker thugs:BYNUM, ARTEST AND ODUM should pay for their crimes. They think they are tough guys just slapping people around but they will get beat up if they continue their COWARDLY ACTS on the wrong person. BYNUM, ARTEST AND ODUM SHOULD ALL BE IN JAIL. Those three idiots should save their apologies and serve their time for their cowardly acts.

The Hawks should STAND PAT and not trade away their great talent. Look folks, you may not realize it right now, but the Hawks have four guys on their roster who have a great chance of making the hall-of-fame: Jamal Crawford, Josh Smith, Al Horford and Joe Johnson. Keep this core group in tact. They will all develop and become great over time. Joe will get much better; Al Horford will soon remind us of Wilt Chamberlain, Josh Smith will IMPROVE DRAMATICALL and will soon be better than LaBron James, and Jamal Crawford even now can shoot the basketball like “Pistol” Pete Maravich. DONT TRADE AWAY THE CORE HAWKS.

I’d LOVE to get Andrew Bynum in here, I really don’t care if he german suplexed and then briefly butt-raped J J Barea, HE’D BE GREAT for the Hawks!!! Listen, the last injuries he had were freak injuries where someone fell into his legs. Not him being goofy, just freak injuries. He’s not really injury prone, and he’s fairly healthy right now. That being said, I DON’T WANT TO GET RID OF THE FEW SCORERS THAT WE HAVE!!! We don’t score very easily, we need to look for more scoring options. We can’t give up Josh Smith, and we should keep Kirk because AS OF NOW, we only have 2 real PGs unless we put Jamal at the point full time, and have Damien behind Joe.
BYNUM WOULD BE GREAT, GIVING UP JOSH and KIRK for BYNUM AND ARTEST would NOT be great. Artest CAN’T SCORE we’ll have the same problems with him that we do with Josh, and he’s not athletic as Josh so he only brings defense, but Josh brings a lot more to the table. DO NOT do this trade. There are other teams out there, BAD TEAMS, BAD TEAMS WITH GOOD PLAYERS, BAD TEAMS WITH GOOD PLAYERS THAT ARE WILLING TO TAKE RISKS AND MAKE TRADES. We have a million players we don’t use, trade them AND MARVIN for a good center. Hey LET’S TAKE MAGGETTE from the Bucks and BOGUT. I’d trade 5 of our players we don’t use for them, imagine….
Teague/Kirk
Joe/Jamal/Sy
Josh/Maggette/Damien/
Horford/Magnum Rolle
Bogut/Zaza/Collins
We could trade Hilton, Powell, Etan Thomas, MARVIN, and maybe Sy for Bogut and Maggette. LISTEN, WE ARE A CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM IF WE PULL THIS OFF!!! Or something like this trade! We are a good C and a scoring SF away from a championship!! GO HAWKS!!!
Hmm, what about Iguodala, what would that take? He looks tradeable. Maybe get him, and a center from another team. So many options, the Celtics got 2 great players from 2 random teams and got a championship. We need 2 players and we’re on our way….I mean, we could’ve beaten the Bulls THIS YEAR and been to the Conference finals. If we had a SF and a Center that series was OURS ALL THE WAY.
